Masumi: I’ll say it countless times. At least 100 more times.

Izumi: Ummm… Where are the other three?

Tsuzuru: In the changing room. Itaru-san still hasn’t prepared his heart yet.

Izumi: Yeah, I understand how he feels. I never thought that it would actually turn out like this…

*flashback starts*

Izumi: I’m fine with going to an amusement park, but even without uniforms…

Masumi: You can’t, I want to go on a uniform date with Director.

Itaru: Alright, so only Director-san.

Izumi: Hey, that’s not fair..! If I’m doing this, then I’m taking everyone with me!

Tsuzuru: I wore a school uniform in our performance the other day, so I don’t really mind.

Izumi: That’d be rough for me too…

Sakuya: I understand! Though that’s kind of too bad.

Masumi: Let’s go already. My date time with Director is decreasing.

Tsuzuru: For now, what should we ride first?

Masumi: The Ferris wheel.

Sakuya: It seems fun if we ride it together, right!

Izumi: If it’s the Ferris wheel here, then it looks like we can all fit inside.

Masumi: Even though I wanted the two of us to ride it together, why did it turn out everyone’s joining…

Tsuzuru: Alright, alright, you can do that next time. Sakuya said he wants everyone to ride it together.

Masumi: …I got it. But I’m the one who will sit next to Director.

Izumi:  The haunted house was pretty scary and intense…!

Sakuya: Right? At first, it was scary and intense. But Citron-san taught me all the names of the ghosts so then rather than being scared, I started to feel a bond with them.

Tsuzuru: The names of the ghosts…

Sakuya: Mii-chan, Takkun, he knew everyone’s names!

Citron: The other day on TV, they said when you think you’re scared, if you give them names then you can be content** over your fear!

Itaru: You mean you can conquer your fear.

Citron: That’s it!

Izumi: (That sounds like a lesson from a children’s education program…)

Chikage: It’s about lunch time, right?

Izumi: Fufufu, I’ve been waiting to hear those words! Tah daaah! Actually, I made lunch boxes!

Masumi: Director’s handmade lunch box…! I’ll eat them all.

Izumi: Tsuzuru-kun and I made them together for everyone.

Masumi: ��Then I’ll only eat the parts that were made by Director.

Tsuzuru: You get nothing.

Sakuya: Ah! It’s napolitan!

Richie Tozier didn’t know what he wanted to do with his life.

That wasn’t a very unique statement but Richie wasn’t a very unique person. An average guy who was as blind as a bat, born in bumblefuck nowhere and eventually making it out of there and into the big wild city, making a living working at a big-name magazine.

Okay, the last part was pretty impressive, but he didn’t actually work very hard for that job.

He used to dream of writing comedy. Of telling jokes or writing for amazing shows like Saturday Night Life or something on Comedy Central. He wanted to be a comedian. To make people laugh. Sure, he is seen as the funny guy around the watering tank, but thats just because the rest of the people he worked with were a bunch of yuppies with impressive college degrees and no real personalities. They’re no better than the robots who work for Buzzfeed.

They had paperback covers and an app for people who didn’t want to go to the store to buy an actual copy. They had their own YouTube channel that hit millions of hits thanks to interviews and other shit that Richie took part in.

When Bill decided he wanted to make this into a real thing, he wanted it to make some sense. It wasn’t some balls to the ball insanity mag that people read for juicy gossip. It was real. The people who subscribed were real and the people featured in it were real.

Richie’s writing, not so much.

He mostly did puff pieces. Little things that didn’t take a lot of effort but were mostly filler in between the larger stories. It was something Bill had done for them after the magazine got big. You see, he and Bill had been buddies in college. Both young and naive about the world. Neither really knew what they wanted, but they had dreams and that was all that mattered back then.

It was Bill that had the real talent with writing and despite publishers being interested, he never took into account just how much time, effort, and money went into getting a book published. Richie, always believing in his best friend, decided to give him all the cash he had saved up for spring break so he would make the first move on getting his novel out.

He didn’t mind much as he found that he could eat, sleep, and drink on the couch the same way he could out on the beach.  

That novel ended up being a best seller and skyrocketed Bill’s career. Bill always remembered that, so when his second and third books became such a thrill, he decided to take the chance and create a magazine and brought Richie along for the ride.

It was easy work and he made good money for doing very little, but he found that was the main cause of his quarter-life crisis. He wanted so much more than he had been given that Richie was actually feeling guilty for wanting more.

He had done stand up in the city and even took an improv class, but nothing seemed to stick to him. Now he was over thirty and found himself in a rut. He lived alone in a small apartment filled with things he didn’t need but purchased because he thought they would bring out a sense of excitement.

He was single, though that was a whole nother issue as it took Richie an embarrassingly long time to come to terms with his own sexuality. Growing up in a small town where people were cruel and the world didn’t understand left marks on an impressionable kid. It wasn’t until he was halfway through college that he did anything with a guy and well-passed gradation that he realized that it was more than okay to be gay, it was normal.

So yeah, he was open and fine with it, but still lonely as hell. He had been with people in the past, but he found that he mostly just shut himself off from the world. He wasn’t happy about anything anymore and it seemed the only thing that got him by was that ending it all would have proved his teenage bullies right; that he was better off dead.

And if there was anything Richie wanted to live for, it was spite.

And also music.

Despite not being musically inclined at all, Richie loved music with all his heart. He spent a good portion of his time listening to records as a kid. He used to go around carrying a walkman and CD player and Zune throughout his life. He paid for the mom's gigs on his phone because he needed to have all his favorite songs ready to blast at the tap of a finger.

While they already had a guy that wrote specifically about music for the magazine, he had always been able to sweet talk Bill into allowing him to have a few moments to shine and write something about some artist. Those were the pieces that really mattered to him. The ones that gave Richie the chance to dive deep into the thing he loved.

Sure, he had written a whole expose on Street Fighter and perhaps he did make a big deal out of the Star Wars franchise, but it was the moments when Richie could reel back and listen before writing that got him going.

They rarely did full-length articles on performers as the magazine was something of a clusterfuck of topics. Bill Denbrough never wanted to settle on just one thing. Paper Boat was more than just one specific topic. It was everything and they would be damned if they ever settled on its something.

But of course, now and then something would come along and the whole team would be scrambling to put together a magazine dedicated to that one specific person. It wasn’t always a celebrity. Bill meant what he said when he wanted to keep the magazine aimed at the everyday people.

Their biggest seller to date had been when they put out issues all about Ben Hanscom the architect. Richie had no idea why anybody would want to read about the guy other than to enjoy the pictures that were taken of him, but low and behold, the world wanted to know.

As it turned out, Ben was a decent human being who just wanted to make the world a better place and he also happened to be extremely hot while doing it. Who knew that was possible!

The physical copies sold out everywhere and the website crashed thanks to all the promotions they did on it. Like, what the actual fuck?

Bill was that good at what he did and it also helped that he was writing his books on the side. He had people from all over coming through wanting to see what they could do and it only proved to be more impressive as time went on.

Now the magazine needed something new, something fresh and it seemed Bill had it all planned out.

“Here at Paper Boat, we don’t choose a good looking celebrity because we want to make money. You know, I’m not going to call up Jennifer Aniston and ask her to do me a favor -- I could, but I won’t -- because that isn’t what we do here.” Bill explained as they went over the board meeting for the next issue. “The people featured on our cover are interesting. People who want to bring the world together and make a change. Or maybe they’re just batshit insane and look good while doing it. Who knows.”

A small array of laughter came over the place. Richie leaned back in his chair, half paying attention. He knew how these things went. Bill made a big, exciting speech before revealing who or what they’d be focusing on. The assignments would be passed around and Richie would be given something soft and fun.

He got the dumb shit that got the people who didn’t want to read involved. Sometimes he’d do interviews while vlogging. They’d try food they never tried before or do something stupid. One of the most interesting had been when he got assigned to interview Kristen Wiig while bobbing for apples. Certainly interesting and the flow to the website was wonderful.

Richie was the writer they went to when they wanted it to seem kitsch and gimmicky. Enough for it to garner actual attention, but nothing worth anybody's time.

He tossed his stress ball up in the air, catching it as it followed the natural path and came back down. He got bored easily as meetings like this and he waited for Bill to just get on with it and assign everybody their respected jobs.

Bill hit a button on his computer, revealing a picture that Richie was all too familiar with. It was of a punk rock band that he had followed since he graduated from college. Trashmouth was one of the greatest bands that had ever come into Richie’s life. They were like if Queen and the Ramones were put together, had a baby, and then that baby had a baby with Green Day: that weirdly insane combination would be Trashmouth.

There were five members, but the main focus was and always had been the lead singer and guitarist Dr. K. Nobody knew why he went by that nor did he ever give an answer. Richie had googled him a couple of times, wanting to find out more, but the guy was a fucking mystery. It was like he just appeared on the scene, completely out of his mind with cut off sleeves and steller vocals.

It was safe to say Richie had a big gay crush on Dr. K.

And that was fine because Dr. K was just as gay.

He had never been seen with anybody, always choosing to keep his personal life private, but his songs were obvious enough even if most of them seemed pretty genderless. He had done one interview where the person asking the questions kept using the term ‘she’ or ‘her’ until finally, the guy replied that he writes songs about guys.

That took the world by fucking storm and Richie Tozier had never been the same.

“Some of you may be familiar with Trashmouth. Multiple Grammy noms and wins. Always in the top 40 listings despite repeatedly being told that punk rock was dead.”

“Please tell me we’re going to be featuring the band,” Mike, the music specialist for the magazine, piped up eagerly.

“I can’t because we won’t,” Bill replied. “Our focus is on him.” Bill hit another button and a solo picture of Dr. K popped up.

Richie’s mouth was watering and he sat up straight. He had the same picture in a small poster in his apartment. It was set up alongside some other pictures in what he called his “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Wall” because he was just that big of a fan. He looked at it often, always finding himself thankful for all the music that had been created and got him through some pretty dark days as a kid.

Did it also help that Dr. K was incredibly attractive and gave Richie a little bit of encouragement just by looking so good? Yes, yes it did.

“It seems Dr. K will be going off on his own. My sources tell me he’ll be putting out a solo album by the end of the year and I want to know everything about it. Mikey, that’s your job. Speak to whoever you have to to find out what is going to be on that album. Audra, speak to the rest of the band, find out how they feel about the ending of an era. Georgie, get your camera ready because we’re doing a photo shoot with him in three days.”

“Who is doing the main exposé?” Greta asked, popping her gum as she spoke.

Bill smirked, turning back to his computer. “I’ll pick someone later. For now, you’re all dismissed.”

The group got up from their chairs and left Bill’s office. All except for Richie, who was too fucking flabbergasted to do a damn thing. As Bill began to head out, he finally scrambled to his feet to follow him. His long legs led him there quickly, though he mostly sidestepped around his coworkers to finally reach their boss.

“Bill! Big Bill! Wait up.” He called, following him to the elevator.

“What's up, Rich? I’m about to head out for lunch.” Bill said, turning to face him. “You hungry? We could check out that new sandwich place that opened across the way.

“Oh, no. I’m time. Stuffed.” Richie patted his stomach lamely, offering a large smile to his friend and boss. “Hey! So, just checking in to see about that latest pitch.”

“Oh right,” Bill paused, hitting the elevator button. “You were a fan of that band, right? Oof. Sorry about the breakup buddy. Haven’t you seen them like six times?”

“It’s sixteen, but that’s not important right now.” Richie corrected. “Bill. Buddy. You have to listen to me.”

“You got it, Rich.”

“I know you only trust me with the puff pieces because I’m not as talented as Mike or even Greta, but I need you to trust me on this.”

“You can do the exposé, Rich.”

“I have gotten better over time and I swear, if you just give me the chance, I promise. I won’t do a single embarrassing voice or anything to get Paper Boat blacklisted.”

“I’m sure you’ll embarrass yourself in one way or another, but that’s your issue. You have two days.”

“Until what?”

“Until your interview with Dr. K,” Bill said, stepping into the elevator as the doors opened. “If you’d stopped rambling you would have heard me tell you that you’re going to be the one doing the expose. You’ll be meeting him in two days, so you better come up with some good questions.”

“Holy shit,” Richie muttered.

“Holy shit, indeed Tozier,” Bill smirked. “I know you’ve been in some sort of funk lately, so I hope that this will shake you up a bit. Better keep your fanboy boner under control.” Bill warned, smiling as the elevator doors closed between them.

Whether Richie realized it or not, Bill believed in him and his writing ability. He may not have the raw talent like himself, but he knew what Richie was capable of. He has a way with people that allowed them to loosen up and relax and nothing was better for a good interview than someone comfortable with the person asking the questions.

Bill couldn’t think of a single person who would be better for this specific project and having Richie be an uber-fan of the artist was just a bonus. If Richie made an ass of himself, that would be his problem, not the magazines.

Richie stood there, not knowing what to do next. He looked to his watch, realizing he had less than 72 hours to come up with a buttload of questions for his idol. He ran back to his cubby to brainstorm.

This is set in the Red Dead Redemption universe, however there’s no spoilers for either game, and you don’t need to have prior knowledge of the games to understand the fic. I’m just using RDR for the setting and the time period (1899). Hope you enjoy!

III. The Heirophant

Annie arose in the large, plush bed convinced she had dreamt the night before, but her hair was still wet. Her skin still smelled of the rosewater she bathed in the night before. It was the first bit of luxury she ever had in her life. The dream sat in her mind, bouncing like an echo or an old memory trying to stay relevant. The figure was faceless, nameless, unknown, but the blonde patch and her mind said otherwise. It felt improper. It felt wrong. She wouldn’t deny that it made her blush.

She brushed her hair out and placed it in braids before leaving her room. Ezra was waiting for her in the sitting area by the front desk. As she descended the stairs, she noticed a small look on Ezra’s face, one she couldn’t read. His eyes widened, the corners of his mouth turned up ever so slightly. He was so involved in his own thoughts that he scrambled to stand up as Annie reached the bottom of the stairs.

“You look, um. You look good. I am assuming the rest served you a world of purpose.” He was bouncing from foot to foot, clearly eager about something. “Are we ready? I have a bit of a revelation for you waiting a little away.” 

Ezra rode the two of them about a mile outside of Strawberry before slowing down near a clearing by the Owanjila Dam. Hitched onto a tree was a beautiful Appaloosa with a grey-spotted coat. The mare was nibbling at a small branch as they approached. The horse was already saddled, its mane and tail clean and shining. Something about her felt off. 

“You stole her.”

Ezra didn’t even hesitate as he walked over to the mare. “I did steal her.” 

“I am trying to start my life anew. I don’t get there by stealing a horse.”

“Well, in the eyes of the law, I am the one that stole the horse, so please consider this new chapter of your life further untainted.” 

Annie remained by Ezra’s horse. The more she thought about the situation, the further her blood began to boil. They were both wanted, both on the run, and he chose to steal a horse? When did he steal it? Where did he steal it from? Did he make a trip back to Valentine while she slept? His bounty might be full of petty crimes that he could serve time for a leave, for her getting caught guaranteed a rope. It felt like a betrayal.

“Where did you get that horse?” Annie stormed up to him in a fit of confidence the likes of which she had never felt. She stared him in the eye, daring him to tell her Valentine so that she could ride off with his horse, leave his roundabout way of speaking, his smirk, his stupid blonde patch in the mud that caked their shoes. 

“That is not of import.”

“It is to me.” 

“Is that roses I smell on you? I find it befitting-”

“Do not change the subject.”

Ezra sighed. The horse was stolen, but he didn’t take it from the Valentine stables, and he wasn’t the one to steal it. He explained to her that his purpose in Strawberry was selling information on stagecoach itineraries to postal workers, who would sell the information to outlaws interested, and then give Ezra a cut of whatever they took. According to one of the outlaws, his partner had taken a liking to one of the horses on the coach, and Ezra chose to take the outlaw’s old horse in lieu of cash. Her name was Lucille. 

“Look little - little lady. Next time I would greatly appreciate a ‘thank you’ before you try and rip out my throat over a kind and honest gesture.” 

“I will thank you when we reach Armadillo.”

Ezra scoffed. “This is an exciting side of you I have not seen before. Perhaps staying at the hotel was a bad idea.”

This time Annie did smack the hat off of Ezra’s head. Before he had time to respond, she hopped on Lucille, and began to ride back in the direction of Strawberry. She rode slowly to allow him to catch up. His hat was still off and hung on the horn of his saddle when he pulled up beside her, hair sticking out in various places, some pieces waving over his forehead. Annie couldn’t help but think the look was kind of charming. He had shaved during their stay in Strawberry, the stubble gone from his cheeks, leaving only his mustache. It made the symmetrical bald patches on either side of his chin less noticeable. 

Ezra had them follow a path along the Upper Montana River instead of riding on the main roads. He felt it would be too risky, saying that the stagecoach robbery he helped organize was executed a little too close to Strawberry for his liking. The sun warmed her face as they journeyed on. When the land necessitated it, they crossed the river and settled on the roads the rest of the way to Blackwater. The surrounding area resembled what Annie saw in her dream all that time ago: a mixture of desert and wheat fields, so different from what she was used to in Valentine. 

Blackwater was the most advanced town Annie had seen yet. Most of the roads were worn down dirt paths like Valentine and Strawberry, except for the one that ran through the middle of town, which was cobbled with light stones and lined with poles with wires Annie had never seen before. Ezra directed them to the saloon on the corner of Main Street. 

“I might be a minute. If you hear screaming or hollering or otherwise concerning noises, pay it no mind.” Ezra tipped his hat at Annie and sauntered into the saloon.

The clientele clashed with the decor of Blackwater’s only saloon. While the decor suggested something along for a higher class, everyone from the local drunk to the actual high class businessman filled the place, surrounding the bar and card tables. Annie sat on a couch opposite the bar, opting to fold her hands in her lap and simply wait for Ezra to finish his business. She wasn’t even sure if she would be able to hear any “concerning noises,” as customers slowly began to file in as the afternoon went on, and a man began to play the piano. 

An hour since they first entered the saloon, and Ezra was nowhere to be seen. She knew he had disappeared up the stairs, but hadn’t heard anything since. No one had paid her any mind as she continued to sit patiently on the couch, not ordering anything or acknowledging anyone. Her goal was to keep her head down in any way she could. 

Annie’s head shot up and over to the stairs when she heard a thud echo through the saloon. At the bottom was a well dressed man, badly bruised and crawling towards the exit. At the top was Ezra; a small smirk of amusement etched on his face, similar to the one he was wearing when he and Annie first met. His pistol was out and in his hand, but at his side and remained there as he slowly waltzed down the steps. The entire saloon had silenced over the spectacle, the creaking stairs the only sound to be heard. Annie felt stuck on the couch. It was like she was a slave to the sight of a form of Ezra she had never seen before. 

“Mr. Martin, I was under the humble impression that we had a deal. And I intend to honor it.” 

Mr. Martin continued to crawl backwards to the door to no avail as Ezra reached him in an instant. Annie could almost see the sweat beading on his forehead. Even his mother wouldn’t have been able to recognize him: both eyes were nearly swollen shut, his nose broken, an ugly bruise grew above a large welt across his jaw. Annie glanced over to Ezra and saw that his right hand was in no better shape than Martin’s face. No one moved a muscle as Ezra crouched over him. 

“The next time our paths cross, you will pay what you owe me or I will put a bullet in your head and sell your corpse to the first buyer to clear your debt, are we at yet another agreement, Mr. Martin?”

“I-I-I gave you all I have.” 

“And it is not enough,” Ezra cooed. He cocked his arm back and Mr. Martin flinched. “You have reached the end of my patience. I am giving you another month before you learn that, unlike you, I am a man that makes good on my word.” 

Ezra stood up and holstered his pistol, leaving Martin on the floor, his eyes never leaving Ezra’s back. Annie didn’t realize that she hadn’t broken eye contact with Martin until Ezra cleared his throat beside her.

“Birdie,” he said, holding out his hand. Annie didn’t take it. Instead, she stormed out of the Blackwater Saloon and rode off in a general direction that she hoped led out of the town. Blackwater’s one cobbled road sounded off in her ears as the sound of Ezra coming up behind her grew closer. By the time she decided to slow down and give him the chance to fully catch up, the sun had started to slip under the horizon.

“There is a clearing a few more miles from here, by the lake. If you slowed up, I’ll be more than happy to lead us to it.” 

Annie relented, slowing Lucille to a trot so that Ezra could pass her. The anger inside her continued to boil as he guided them to the clearing and began to set up camp.

“You could have killed him!”

“If I wanted him dead, he would already be in the ground, I can assure you that.”

“There was no need to make a scene. Someone could have gotten the law. They could be coming after us right now.”

“The people of Blackwater know better than to come between a man and his debts.”

It infuriated Annie how Ezra kept his cool. Never raising his voice, never so much as a sign that he was as angry with her as she was with him. If he was, it was the one thing he kept to himself. Not that she couldn’t have secrets of her own. She still wasn’t sure if Ezra actually believed her about her husband, even with the bounty poster in his hands. And still had the… dream from Strawberry. An inkling she kept held to her heart, one she had mulled on over and over as the time passed. She knew it was getting to her, dwelling. Annie could feel it in how her eyes lingered on Ezra too long, how when she wasn’t thinking about Armadillo or her husband, or merely surviving, her thoughts were on him.

How her heart annoyingly skipped whenever he called her ‘little bird.’ 

These thoughts, this way of thinking, emerged after Strawberry and took hold of her in ways she couldn’t help but cling to. What kind of man was he, outside of this life? Had he helped someone like he was helping her before? How did he like his coffee? What would he be like as a father? Thoughts that never crossed her mind with her husband.

Maybe, at some point, Annie did love her husband. Some time when he was still courting her, making sure he went a little overboard. Too many flowers, staying out a little too late. Overly grand gestures that weren’t red flags then, and even now Annie struggled to see them. To properly recall just when the levee broke. By comparison Ezra’s gestures, if they were such, were subtle, quiet, the direct opposite of the boisterous personality he put on. Never rushing her, never raising his voice, holding out his hand to help her stand up or get off her horse, a hand she never took but he always offered. Even with what he did in Blackwater, she sought to find the spark of cruelty she saw in her husband and came home empty. It plagued her: were these the gestures of a man who had interest in her the way she might have interest in him? Or just the gestures of a man with a soul. 

Annie emerged from her tent to prepare dinner when something in the lake caught her eye. A figure with their back turned, far enough out that the water reached their waist. It was Ezra, bathing. On first instinct, Annie wanted to turn her eyes, or run back to her tent. Instead, she kept watching, too caught up in what she was seeing to give in. 

He was beautiful. 

The moonlight bounced off of his tan skin in a way Annie was sure would be blinding had she been closer. Even from the distance, she could see some of the scars that laced his back from prior exploits. She watched as the muscles in his back danced as he stretched to massage an ache, or rub the water through his hair. He turned around and she ducked back inside, hoping he didn’t catch her. Annie paused before peeking again. Ezra’s front was facing her, droplets of water running down from his hair to his neck, his collarbone, down the trail of his sternum and over the small crest of his belly until it came to rest at the small patch of hair under his navel that she could tell continued under the water. She could barely make out how his face grimaced when his hurt hand made contact with the water. Her cheeks flared so warm she was convinced they would actually catch aflame. 

Ezra grew closer to the shore and Annie scrambled to get the stew started. It wasn’t much, but she figured it might be a little more filling than eating what little was left of the venison Ezra caught. He made his way over to the fire, white linen shirt hanging loosely and unbuttoned on his shoulders. He dug around in his satchel and pulled out clean gauze. Annie watched as he struggled to wrap it around his hand on his own.  

His deep eyes shone with concentration, illuminated by the fire light, and she caught herself taking too-long glances every other minute as she tended to their meal. When he finished, he cleared his throat, a move Annie found out of character for him.

“Might I request your help in buttoning my shirt, little bird?” He held up his bandaged hand as though she may have forgotten. “I myself am not much of a fan of this manner of dress. It feels… far too vulnerable for a man of my persuasion.” The look on his face told Annie that it was the truth. There was a certain discomfort in the way his lips tightened in a straight line, a tenseness in his shoulders over the knowledge of his exposure. 

“I told you not to call me that,” Annie said, standing up, trying to hide the smirk that betrayed her statement. Ezra rose to greet her. He held his arms out about a foot away from his torso, as if to say ‘I’m not going to touch you.’ 

“You’re right. My apologies.” She started to work her way up his shirt. The way they were standing allowed the fire to wrap around his skin, giving it the appearance of an indelible warmth. It took everything in Annie not to look down and watch as his belly rose out and in with each steady breath, or remark on how she couldn’t see his hip bones make delicate peaks below his skin in the lake. She found it hard to deny herself a peek at the same dusting of hair that disappeared under the waistband of his pants. Who was this woman she had become?

“Why do you call me that?” Her knuckle accidentally brushed against his skin as she fastened a button in the middle of his torso, and a string of electricity shot through her hand. The feeling was equal parts guilt and relief. When she looked up at him to gauge a reaction at the contact, she saw that he was looking straight ahead, focused on the horizon behind them. 

“What? ‘Little bird?’” Annie nodded and Ezra opened his mouth as though to answer, then paused. He didn’t respond until she had finished buttoning his shirt.

“It’s because you call to mind a hummingbird, always flitting around, always moving. But why would that matter if you do not want me calling you such?”

“Just a curiosity.” The fact that the first time he called her ‘little bird’ was when she was frozen in place in Valentine was not lost to her. “We’re running low on meat as well.” 

Ezra settled back onto his bedroll with a small grunt. “Then it is good fortune for us that the only thing Mr. Martin could provide was a map with prime hunting locations. You need to learn how to shoot, anyway. I don’t doubt the MacFarlanes would find it suspicious if a woman who is interested in falling under their employ did not know her way around a gun. And not just pointing a shotgun.” He winked at her. 

Annie’s sleep was plagued by dreams and nightmares that choked her. In the beginning, she found herself in Ezra’s embrace, forehead pressed against hers and rocking them slowly back and forth to a song that wasn’t playing. A feeling of weightlessness washed over her, and her chest swelled to the point where she thought it might burst. It was calm, serene, like her mind was telling her that it was her destiny to be in his arms, that they were made for her, when her husband appeared, angrier than she had ever seen him. Redder with rage than he had ever been. He pulled her down from the sky by her ankle and sent her crashing down to the soil beneath them. He didn’t lay a hand on her except for that, but he screamed and screamed until his voice was hoarse, and Annie couldn’t find a way to wake up. 

The sun had barely risen when Ezra decided to wake her by poking his hand into her tent and waving around a bowl of the leftover stew. There hadn’t even been enough time for sleep to have crusted over her eyes, or for her mind to shake the feeling that her husband had broken through her dreams and was waiting for her on the other side of the canvas tent. She chose to eat her leftovers in silence, away from Ezra, hoping to quell the floating feeling in her chest and the ghost of her husband’s ire. Ezra had already packed up the rest of the camp and urged her to hurry before the sun rose.

“Deer like to feed in the early morning. If we find them before the sun is risen, they will be less likely to see us.” 

Annie followed Ezra on horseback as he pored over the map, trying to decide which marked area would give them the best opportunity. He settled on a spot in the middle of the Great Plains, near a small settlement called Manzanita Post. Half of Annie’s sight was filled with rolling fields, the flaxen grains already reflecting the dawn to the point of blindness, the other with dense forest that filtered out what little sun was to be had. 

“Before we get started, we should teach you just how to shoot. If you had pulled the trigger back in Valentine, you would have positively obliterated your right arm.” 

Ezra pulled the rifle from the horse’s saddle and modeled at Annie on how to hold it. “You want the butt to rest in this part here,” he motioned underneath his own shoulder, “so that you don’t hurt yourself from the recoil.” When he passed the rifle off to her, she simply held it in her hands, not confused, but hesitant. 

“Everything all right?” To Annie, holding the gun felt wrong. Thinking about settling it into the meat of her shoulder and pulling the trigger with no threat sat awkwardly inside her. A deer wasn’t her husband, or a lawman, or the only thing that stood between her and freedom. This felt more cold, more calculating than what happened back at her home. She shook off the question.

“I would do it, but as we both well know my trigger finger is somewhat out of commission for the time being.” Annie nodded and hiked the rifle into what she believed was the correct position. She looked over to Ezra for approval. He eyed her stance over once, twice, before approaching her and asking permission to touch her. She nodded once more. 

Ezra pushed himself flush against Annie, his chest to her back, arms against arms, as he molded his body to hers to better assist her. It was the most physical contact Annie had in months. Her heart was beating so fast she was sure there was no way Ezra couldn’t feel it through her back. Ezra placed his right hand on her right arm to help adjust the positioning. The gauze did nothing to alleviate the sheer heat that came off of his skin. A burning sensation that overcame every inch of her flesh as the fingers of his left hand danced around her wrist to straighten it. His instruction fell upon an unfocused mind as the blood in her veins pulsed so loudly it was all she could hear. The sturdiness of his body all she could think about. If she turned her head slightly, she could kiss him, was the first thought she had once the shock wore off. He could bury his curved nose into the crook of her neck and inhale her scent, nibble her earlobe, tease her until she begged.

Annie yelped as Ezra tapped his foot between her ankles, shocking both of them to the point of separation. Her daydream had sent her whirling, mind too hazy at that point to even want to hunt,  to do anything more than to take him in the middle of the forest. It was a miracle she hadn’t dropped the rifle. Ezra looked at her, concern flashing across his face.

“I’m sorry, birdie, was it me? If you aren’t ready I am sure I can figure something out.” 

“No, no, I just… lost focus.”

Ezra had her reposition the rifle, this time keeping his distance as he adjusted her stance and the way she held the gun. If he felt that touching her was a necessity, he would ask, and touch her like she was a porcelain doll one wrong move from cracking. By the time Ezra was finished, the gun felt comfortable in her hands, like it was an extension of herself. He suggested first firing into a tree, to test her aim. 

“You need to keep your breath steady. When you go to fire, hold your breath, and exhale when you pull the trigger.” 

Annie did as he said, and the bullet swiftly pierced through the thin tree’s trunk. She turned to him and saw his hands raised in the air in celebration. He insisted on her taking a few more shots “to turn her misplaced pride into assured confidence.” When Ezra thought she was ready, he hitched Lucille onto a tree, opting to take his horse with them instead. 

They ventured into the wooded area, Ezra’s eyes scanning the ground for tracks or other hints of recent activity among the forest floor. He kept his arm outstretched in front of Annie to encourage her to tread slowly and quietly. Annie couldn’t hear a sound, no twigs snapping or birds singing, as though the forest’s density stole all signs of life in its wake. Ezra gasped quietly.

“It’s shit.” He pointed out the dung on the ground and continued to move in the direction he thought best. His feet moved more quickly as he found more signs more frequently: a tuft of fur on a tree, a group of broken twigs, actual hoof prints. Almost by instinct, Ezra grabbed on Annie’s shoulder to stop her as he caught sight of a deer  grazing about a hundred yards away. It was a buck, and far larger than Annie could have ever imagined. Its antlers were magnificent, large and complex, almost hypnotizing as she continued to stare. Ezra coaxed her to crouch. It made them smaller and reduced the risk of the buck potentially seeing them and running off. 

“You need to make sure your aim is perfect, do you understand, little bird?” Annie nodded, too deep in concentration to correct him, focusing too hard on making sure her heart rate didn’t spike too hard from the name. She adjusted herself once, twice, three times until the rifle practically melted into her. The buck paused from grazing and looked up, and Annie took her shot. The recoil ricocheted through her body and almost blew her clean off her feet. When she gathered her bearings, the buck was on the ground. This time she raised her hands in celebration, an ecstasy coursing through her that she couldn’t compare. Ezra wrapped his arms around Annie’s waist and spun her.

“That was phenomenal, birdie! Annie Oakley only wishes she were as skilled with a rifle as my bird.”

Ezra, stunned at what he let slip, immediately placed Annie down and made his way over to the buck. Annie joined him and eyed her work. The shot was clean, right through its head. She felt a surge of relief at the thought. Ezra began to talk about breaking it down, keeping the meat, selling what they couldn’t use themselves. He told her he would teach her how to do it all when they returned to their camp. His cheeks, when he looked back up at her, were red. Annie helped him tie the buck onto his horse and they rode back to camp. 

His silence worried her. It grew louder the closer they got. He didn’t look back at her, didn’t say a word as she watched the carcass wade with the rhythm of the horse. Ezra seemed to perk up when they made it back. It gave him a reason to talk, something he’d never needed before. Cutting the antlers was gruesome, skinning the buck even more so. By the end of the ordeal, Ezra was back to himself, and Annie had to help him in and out of his shirt, which was covered in blood.

Ezra looked over the map, tracing their path to the nearest settlement “We can sell the pelt and antlers at the butcher in, uh. Oh.” 

“What’s wrong?”

“Not a thing. The closest butcher is technically Armadillo, unless you would like to sojourn back to Blackwater.” 

“I can sell them in Blackwater as long as you stay put.”

Ezra laughed, his smile widening at the sentence. It was infectious and Annie felt the corners of her mouth tick upward. She had never felt this before. A smile to pair with a smile, a want deep in her belly. 

“Fair deal, birdie,” he answered. Ezra looked at her with the anticipation that she would chastise him once more for using the pet name, but it never came, and he smiled again.

It was resolved, she thought. In the morning, before she made her way back to Blackwater, she would let Ezra know how she felt. If he didn’t feel the same, he had the time to leave to keep whatever bond she might break somewhat intact. If he did? The thought scared and thrilled her at the same time. It would be a first. To feel something as intensely as what smoldered inside her be matched and mirrored. The subliminal kind of fear that comes with being known and loved. She craved it, let the thought of it fill her with joy and mix with the confidence she felt as she ate the venison she hunted herself. She wished Ezra a good night, hoping that he heard something in her voice that would tell him that tomorrow would be different. 

Annie wasn’t even able to fully settle into her slumber before she awoke with a gun pointed in her face. A man she didn’t recognize stood behind it, hair cropped short and slicked back with pomade, beard well trimmed, his smile gleaming in the low light. In another life, in a different situation, he would be handsome. 

“Mrs. Annie Grey, if you come with me quietly, I won’t kill you.”

She couldn’t find it within herself to cry, or even react. The shock, the resolution, an ember that had gone untended for so long she was sure it had been extinguished. As she exited her tent, she looked over to where Ezra slept, anticipating that she would find him with a bullet in his head. Instead he lay there, still asleep, though a second bounty hunter had a gun pointed at him as collateral, to ensure her silence. The one who had intruded in her tent saved her the humiliation of hogtying her. He waited until she had mounted his horse before tying her hands behind her back, and securing the other end of the rope to his horse’s saddle. 

Even as the three of them rode off, Ezra didn’t wake, and Annie didn’t scream.

1. Do you have any pets? if not, do your OCs?

Yes! I have three dogs and a cat. They’re babies, all of them. 

2. What was the last song/album/artist you played so much you got sick of it?

Real Friends or The Front Bottoms. Like OK, I love pop punk as much as the next low key emo, but there comes a point where I get tired of listening to songs about guys in their late twenties whining about their ex-girlfriends who cheated on them the summer after high school. Like no shade, I still love them, but I have to be in a specific mood to listen to their stuff again.

3. Do you write poetry?

I used to do, and I want to get back into it again. I literally have no idea how to get back into it though. 

4. Last book you DNF’d 

Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan. Loved the world, hated the MC. Besides that there is nothing really wrong with the story. It’s a good entry level fantasy story. Just was not for me. 

5. Last book you couldn’t get out of your head.

The House of Impossible Beauties by Joseph Cassara and The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. Both incredibly powerful stories that will stick with me forever. I don’t think the last page of Impossible Beauties will ever leave me. Please read both of these books if you have not, beware of triggers though. 

6. Do you have a pre-writing routine? like lighting a candle or a yoga stretch.

Brewing coffee. 

7. What’s your favorite time period to write in?

The past. Literally any time period. I’m in love with fantasy based off historical time periods. Right now, specifically Ancient Greece, Egypt and Rome. All super interesting. 

8. Writing tension filled scenes is difficult. What’s a scene from your WIP that had you anxious or cringing while you were writing it?

The prologue honestly. Like, the beginning still feels rocky asf and I’m not really sure it flows well, and I feel like the dialogue is off. Its a super high-tensioned scene with necessary plot relevance, so I can’t cut it out. 

9. What’s your favorite to read/write: Dialogue or description?

DESCRIPTION. I don’t know how in the world, what sacrifices y’all had to make to whatever deity, or rituals you’re doing for all this good ass description but please dm me so I can find out. 

10. You have to have dinner with the characters in your WIP. On a scale from 1 to 10, how much of a disaster is it?

Like ALL of them? Omigod, it’s Desperate Housewives level of brawling. Ecaeris (she’s an Aries) and Alessa  (she’s a bonafide Leo) are ready to fight (), Vesuvia is being petty (she’s an air sign, OK?). No one has chill. Someone just threw a plate. The only calm one is Esi, Ecaeris’ older sister, but she isn’t doing shit to stop anyone. Its chaos. 

11. If characters from your WIP met characters from another WIP, would they get along? Or start a war against each other?

Let’s see. I have an OC named Aden from a fanfic I wrote a couple years ago (which I will not touch on, we don’t talk about her). If Ecaeris and Aden got together, and talked about their issues, I have a strong feeling that they would be besties. Like ride or die, ‘let’s go get our revenge and then get some therapy’ besties.

Heimat - Turtleneck Review

The German word Heimat is one of those words that loses it's real meaning once translated. Even in German it is difficult to put its meaning into words. Heimat evokes the feeling of a homeland, a familiar place, a feeling of belonging or well-being in short comforting elements. Why does one chose to wear a brand of clothing rather than another? I frequently ask myself that question. I think that one element of the answer would be to first consider the garment intrinsically, its functionality and its design.

Then comes the history of the brand in question. When I wrote about the feeling of Einfuhlung in my Valstar piece, it was clear that my quest for my sense of clothing was taking root.

The German brand Heimat manages to transpose this feeling into its sailor inspired knitwear. Hats, Scarfs but especially Sweaters, here is our take on their now legendary "U Boat" Turtleneck in Forest Green.

A story about threads

Sometimes words are better than a well-drawn picture. This is why we interviewed Christian Hofmann, the founder of Heimat.

How and when did Heimat come to exist?

Heimat was started in 2016 after an 11-year career at Ralph Lauren where my last position held was Director of Merchandising Europe for Polo and RRL.

My whole life I wanted to start my own fashion brand. Do things the way I want them to be done and put my stamp on a creative project.

The Word Heimat is a German phrase with no translation. Heimat is a place where you feel the most comfortable, a place that evokes a sense of belonging or security. Sometimes Heimat can be just the feeling that's triggered by a smell or moment of calm you get whilst you do what you love doing. For example, the feeling a surfer has when he in the ocean or a mountaineer when he reaches the peak. The aim of our clothes is to trigger that same Heimat feeling. We want people to feel safe and secure in our garments and feel at home wherever they might be going.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

Our clothes are universal but we are proud of the German heritage and craftmanship. Germany is known for high-level engineering and great quality all over the world and that’s what Heimat products are about.

I love things that are simple and made for a purpose and are stripped of any unnecessary design features. Hence why a lot of inspirations come from traditional workwear or military garments.

My main inspirations are the outdoors and lifestyle sports like surfing, hiking, or just riding your motorbike but in the end anything

What do you find in a knitwear garment you don't find elsewhere?

We use the best wool which pays back in the quality of our products. You can wear our sweaters or hats for years and the wool will not pill or rip, which is an advantage against other traditionally used materials.

The fit is tailored to the heavy knitting. It will fit tight to the body when you first put it on but after a couple of wear's it softens up and perfectly adjusts to your body shape, similar to a fresh pair of jeans.

Have a look at the perfect finishing details of our garments, the cuffs, hem, or the crown of our hats, which ensures it does not stick up on your head.

Due to our supply chain we are a very sustainable business. The little carbon footprint we create is off set with CO2 projects in Brazil and Africa. We are a small team and our suppliers and B2B clients are partners/friends not just customers, if they do well we do well. We want to have fun and feel positive about what we are doing.

What is the next step for Heimat ?

A turtleneck to cope with cold weather and remain stylish

Every winter, I go in search of the perfect sweater. Every winter, I come to the same conclusion: there is a perfect sweater only for a given situation. I discovered Heimat a year ago, through an Instagram post by Beige Habilleur. I had never really seen or touched a turtleneck knitted this intricate way*, tight and rugged.

The turtleneck – or rollneck for our fellow English readers – is not for everyone. Or rather, there's a turtleneck for every neck. Take Heimat's: it is hand finished, rolls up and unrolls efficiently to the desired height. If it is too cold: unroll it. If it is warmer: roll it up. Same goes for the cuffs. I was conquered by this versatility right away.

The sweater is made in Germany. The sleeves and collar are attached by hand. Made of 100% virgin wool, the sweater is heavy. Nevertheless, it is advisable for you to choose your usual size, knowing the knitting will loosen a bit and make for a perfect fit along wears. A sweater that lives!

A turtleneck that makes me – fittingly – think of the submariners worn by American GIs. Heimat's strength is to offer a classic men's wardrobe while adapting the fit and offering different colors. This model is available in blue, yellow, ecru, black or orange.

4.HIJIKITA TOSHIZOU

#blamegintama. I’ve always had a soft spot for any reincarnation of this man. So when fate did it, I was SOOOOOOOO fucking stoked. I couldn’t have asked for anything more. I believe they did him justice. The design, his NP and his personality are so perfect for him. His interactions with women are fucking hilarious too. The contrast between his obsessive behavior towards the shinsengumi and his urges to hit on woman is gr8 to see.

3. EMIYA/Archer

he’s my ‘if i had to do a guy’. Yo? He’s like? So kick-ass? I may not have liked Shirou upon my first viewing of the Fate series but Archer came it with the goddamn save. His dynamic with himself Shirou was so fun to see. Him being a smug, sarcastic dick bag but also being best mom(TM) is one hell of a ride. And I would play the EMIYA and the UBW chant at my funeral. Goddamn is it sick.

2. Cu Chulainn

Sorry Aaaachaaaaa, best doge wins this round. I always seem to be drawn to characters in anime who animate so goddamn well. And Cu does exactly does in the UBW anime. From there, he becomes an interesting character in his own right. Reading through F/HA and seeing him talk about his past, his training with Scathach and even showing off his little fishing hobby. I found it all endearing. Cu Chulainn is a character that embodies that ‘wishes don’t come true’. And I feel that SO bad. So I just naturally latched on to him. And can we talk about his appearance in the GO anime? He 1v1′d everything and WON. As much as I love the Lancer class, stick to being a Caster, bud.

1. Sakata Kintoki

My son. My boy. THE GOLDEN BOOOOOOOOOOOIIIIIII. He hasn’t made an anime appearance yet or anything but I love him. His lore isn’t as in-depth as say, someone like Arjuna or Karna. He comes from a children’s short story, along with his escapades in his adult life. Frankly, there isn’t much about him but what I feel Fate did with him was awesome. Kintoki is the mascot for children’s day, formerly having been the mascot for boy’s day in Japan. And what he represents is all these shouned tropes that I loved seeing as I grew up. Berserker Kintoki is your typical shounen action hero while Rider Kintoki is obviously a Kamen Rider, as well as a Super Sentai reference. It’s just great seeing that... but TM also inserted a more guilt-ridden and loving side to him. Plus goddamn look at his abs man? Bara af. Get out of here with your shitty otome twink twunk bishies. Get a man who can lift you and your entire extended family.

5. Brynhildr 

blame @nordiixa for this one smh. Guess who loves TRAGEDY? This guuuuuyyyy. As much as I love happy endings, Bryhildr pretty much did not get that. Her obsession with love its relationship with Sigurd is so interesting to see. The struggle between her urge to love and her urge to kill the one she loves is fascinating... because she’ll never be able to overcome it. It’s literally written on her. And that tragedy of not being able to get a happy ending HURTS me. Plus she’s so purdy. Flowing, snowy hair gets me man. Being a Lancer is also a plus. love me some lancers.

4. Okita Souji

#blameGintama2.0. She’s a meme, guys. Straight up. I love her energetic personality. It’s so cute. Thanks to @cerasisbellator and @shinsensaber for their amazing presentations of this character. I just love seeing them meme around. I’m naturally drawn to comedy-orientated characters so this is pretty much why she’s here. Again, Shinsengumi. See Hijikata for deets. Also can someone get this girl some medicine?

3. Nitocris

I would physically beat all of you up to see her smile. She’s so?????? cute???? what the fuck?????????????? Her design may be a little revealing but she’s such a dork? She fucking attacks the main cast the moment she sees them just because they came outta nowhere??? and when she realises she fucked up she gets all flustered and shit. Plus her little medjebs are also adorable. Don’t make her cry or I’ll crawl out from under your bed and leave a medjedb on top of your face. You really don’t want to see what’s under those sheets of theirs.

2. Scathach

As I said, I love Cu. So when I heard his teacher was coming straight into GO. I jumped on that shit faster than Salter would jump on a burger. She also is one of the main reasons I got into GO, and then into RP so she’s special in that regard to me. @motherfuckingqueenoflances never fails to make me laugh with our stupid threads as well so props to mandrew! Also thanks to @rialoir‘s extensive knowledge about Celtic mythology made me love her even more. You can’t find a lot of shit on her on the interenet so my boi cent fucking saved me. Thank u.  Anyway, design-wise: perfect. She can kick my ass and I’d thank her for it. Personality? Honestly she’s so done with everything that she rarely displays strong emotion. Those rare moments where she does decide to let go and smile or go crazy in battle is just so fun to see. I just wish the writers were a bit more consistent on what they want for her. Nasu pls writer her good i love her so much. In short. Shishou pls train me.

Rob: Ali <3 I’m still annoyed that Bodhi was originally planning to flip on you. I knew you were going to be loyal to our alliance and the fact that our hard work did not pay off because of an idol play  and for it to end the way that it did was so depressing. It was an iconic first boot though.

Amir: 

Dustin:  oh Nehe, bud you were just a bundle of energy and I wish i would have been able to contain you. I truly did want to vote with you, however i was the one that lead the charge for you to be voted for the challenge. I just couldnt trust you fully, and i obviously made the right decision sticking my neck out for Amir & Zack. Sorry bud that this wasn’t the season for you because I know how excited you were to play.

Rob: We haven’t talked since Arendelle and then I ended up hosting you in Bouvet. That was an experience but rip I might share the same fate as you. You were taken out because of the mysterious vote which sucks.

Rob: I think that at this point of the game you were in the middle of moving if I remember correctly with Chips. I like you, but i’m glad I didn’t have to play with you because I would have been terrified from the last time we played together.

Dustin:  Ohh Jaiden i fought so hard to not go to that tribal that got you out. Maybe if I would have given up you wouldn’t have gotten out. Life works in mysterious way I guess, and survivor is a game of what if’s. I know how much you love this game, this community ,and yourself. You truly are a one of a kind and its a pleasure to know I finally got a play a game with the infamous Jaiden Hantz.

Rob: I liked you, personally. The confessional you wrote in Bahamas made me cry, it was a rough time for me and I couldn’t handle a lot of things. Coming into this game, I could not trust you at all. I know you were excited, but at this point, I played with you a lot and the plans you come up with would screw me over in the end. I feel bad about the whole ordeal with the joint tribal, but you wanting me to be your goat and pretending you were leaving when Liana left was not nice.

Zack: Crackt king pt 2! Honestly every time I play with you, I never know what to expect. But that’s what I love about you. You’re a legend.

Dustin:  I never trusted you from Day 1, which is so funny to think about. You were so shady when you won that challenge and voted out Zack on Magyi with Nehe. I wish we could have had a battle of the century, but alas it was not meant to be.

Rob: You being removed was bittersweet. On one hand, the reason you were removed was dumb and I was infuriated for you as a player and as a friend. On another hand, you were dangerous and such a snake. If you made the merge you would have been a force to be reckoned with. It’s been so long since I first met you and you were one of my first friends in the community. So thank you.

Amir: I genuinely care about you so much and you know that and I don't know what else to say, I had to do what I did and I 100% own up to it, but yeah ily 

Dustin:  Luke i have heard alot about you, but I never got to hear anything from you. Our games never crossed paths, and i never got to know you. I wish we could have spoke more, and thats one of my regrets from premerge is not being social enough to the other tribes because my favorite part of these games is truly meeting people from all over this planet that all have one thing in common. A love for this game.

Rob: I love you, I really do. First, I want to apologize for the things that happened OUTSIDE the game. I took it way too far and I know you’re upset about it. About the game, I don’t think we clicked. We didn’t talk nor were we really allied. I couldn’t trust you, and I wanted you gone early. I just don’t think you were in the right mindset for this game.

Zack: Another one who tried me!! I honestly would have LOVED if me you and Abel had a lowkey alliance but you just weren’t feeling it! You know I love you though and don’t take any of this personal and hope you do the same!

Amir: ILYSM and im upsetti that you didn't make merge, i was so excited to play with you and tbh you're too good for us 

Dustin:  Cole, your boot was one of the hardest ones for me, and changed my path on this game. I truly did want you to be ride or die. However you were being shady right before tribal and Mearl got me to throw my vote onto Sherry which put the nail in your coffin. I wish I could have stuck with you, but you were just too unpredictable to be a ride or die. I am glad we squashed our beef from BBHell cause you truly are one funny guy.

Rob: I had no problem with you. I was the ONLY person to vote with you and yet you remove me as a contact while we were in another game together. You added me back, and I would not have been mad if you won at all. You played a good game with what was given and I’m hurt that you don’t feel the same way. I did want to be friends with you after both of our games but if you don’t then that’s fine I guess.

Amir: 

Dustin:  Oh Sherry, you added some much needed energy and fun to this game. I will never forget you quizzing Cole at tribal council. It sucks that we got put against each other, but we never got to truly get over it and become allies. You are for sure someone I will never forget, and i wont forget your idol either ;)

Rob: We did not connect with each other and I think it’s really my fault. For that I apologize, you work hard to help young people which I really respect. You wanted to work with me but you are such a good player and I was worried about your relationship with Sid as well. You didn’t talk much, which I understand, you had the class and work. Even then, you still managed to turn things around for yourself. I panicked when you threw my name when we merged but I think we managed to clear the air. Whether you would have worked with me or not is a mystery, to me at least, but it’s sad you were taken out by a medevac. 

Amir: Hello Steven aka pharmacy daddy i wish we got to talk more throughout the game and im sorry for how things worked out 

Dustin: Stevie, you had such bad luck at this merge. I wish we had a closer connection so that I could have fought for you to stay. However after voting in the minority I didn’t have enough wiggle room to get a vote going. You’re a rad guy and the main chat was always a little bit quieter without you there.

Rob: I think you had a certain level of trust in me, but it wasn’t reciprocated from my part. I was weary of whether you would try to cut me at some point in the game after the Arctic Circle vote. I was sad because I really wanted to work with you and Sam in that game and you two were the main reason I voted Roxy which screwed me over big time. Admittedly, when you joined Akyab I wanted Seamus instead but you voted with the majority and kept me safe from my blunder so thank you. You were someone that I was worried about coming into merge but there had already been such a huge target on your back that almost everyone wanted you gone.

Zack: Bring me to bears week next year please.

Amir: Im scared to compliment literally anyone cuz I was voted biggest ass kisser FEWJBHBF but i promise i'm being genuine when I say you’re one of the strongest players I’ve come to play with in a game and in just the way you spoke and how you played the game I could tell how much of a fucking threat you were, I hope you 4give me. 

Dustin:  Now you for one caused alot of chaos in this game. I wanted to trust you so desperately. I was told by all my friends that you were loyal to your alliance in other games, and so desperately wanted to be the Becky to your Yul. However you were just Chaos Kass. You threw me into a loop making so many alliances, and excluding me from some. I wish we could have just talked things through and had no more messy votes like you said.

Rob: I was really hurt by you on a game level. When we swapped together you were someone that I wanted to work with and I did trust you. During the Cole vote, you were playing everyone and I do believe that it hurt your game. It exposed you as an unreliable person and lost the trust you had with a lot of people. And then the night you leave you wanted me, Tommy, and Dustin to vote in the minority against Zack when you voted Abel? Grr. You were such a huge threat and I hoped that you at least had fun at Florida not worrying about this game. Andreas told me he met you hehe.

Zack: I honestly wish we talked more! But I heard you were against me and you also started to start an alliance with like over half the cast. But I sure do love crackt antics so I stan!

Amir: Despite you making it your mission in this game to destroy me, I actually do have a lot of respect for you as a player, and I know you targeting me wasn’t personal but still I had no choice but to try and destroy your game back. You're a nice guy 

Dustin:  Tommy you are such a pure soul. I felt like I could talk to you about anything, and I hope you felt the same way. You truly made this game feel like survivor with the constant talking and getting to know people. You kept energy alive around camp, and once you left it seemed as if people didn’t talk as much as they used too. I wish we could have stuck together longer as the minority alliance. However the cards just weren’t there. I wish i could have told you the truth about it, but idolmania makes us all paranoid. No hard feelings Tommy, you are an amazing social player.

Rob: You have all the reason in the world to hate me. You trusted me so much and I ended up backstabbing you. Because of the crocodile bite, if I had voted with you, you would not have gone home. I didn’t. I voted against you, told the people you were targeting about your plans with Crow and Dom, and made you look like Booboo the fool. It was entirely a game decision. I love you. You were someone I really liked and trusted but I don’t think I would have made it where I am right now if I flipped with you. I hope that after this game is all said and done we can be friends again. You can berate me and say I’m the worst when you finally get the opportunity, but I hope you can forgive me. I’m sad that you unfollowed me on tumblr : (

Zack: It was great getting to know you! You tried getting me out several times so I just had to turn on you. No hard feelings and I hope the same from you <3

Dustin:  God Dom, you caused me so much stress in this game without you doing anything. We never did get to forgive and forget what happened in BBHell last year, and I think because of that we just were always meant to be on opposite sides of the coin. One day I know we will cross paths again and I think then we will bury the hatchet, but until then, ill keep the hatchet firmly in my hand.

Rob: Personally, I don’t see what other people were talking about. I think you’re a nice guy, but I must not see what others are seeing. I’m sad we weren’t close in this game, you were someone I was looking forward to working with. I think you fell into a bad spot and I knew I couldn’t work with you if I wanted to make it further into this game. It disappointed me that it seemed like you gave up and would have liked to see some fight left in you. We still have our streak though!

Zack: Honestly robbed legend.

Amir: You are a charming guy and I really really wanted to work closely with you, but I felt like you didn't make much of an effort to reply to me and on top of that the direction I took my game in didn't involve you so it was my fault too but I still consider you my showmance, also you were so fucked over by that instant  

Dustin:  The next OG Magyi voted off after Nehe, I never could tell where you stood in this game, whether with me or against me. I think because of that I always assumed the worst. It sucks you got screwed over because of one move you made. But I guess that’s just how the game works. Who knows maybe if it wasn’t an instant tribal and there was a immunity challenge, who knows what the game would be like right now. But i guess that is just how the game goes.

Rob: You were screwed over by the freaking instant tribal. You had no chance of possibly winning immunity which was the only way I saw that you could have saved yourself. I think that the reason you were put into such a terrible spot in the first place was because I had exposed you as trying to flip the game. I couldn’t vote with you when Tommy left, people saw you as such a huge threat, you were smart, you had the double vote, you were a likable person to the jury. If pulled off the Zack vote then you would have made a huge game move and you were going to win this thing.

Zack: CROWWWWWW!!! I’ll never forget round 1 when you stuck your neck out for me. I know you turned on me but I had to pay you back for saving me round 1 that’s why I voted Sid out the round you left with you (sorry Sid, oops) but your vote got cancelled anyway so it didn’t really matter :/ Love you tho.

Amir: I don't even know what to say, Sid im so so so so sorry, I don't wanna sound like im not owning my move, I own it and im proud of it but I hope you know how important you are to me and yeah you’ve made the past month so fun for me and I wouldnt be saying that if i didnt mean it, 

Dustin:  God Sid I wish i was as smart as you. I was always so afraid you didn’t like me because of the cole vote off when i voted Sherry. But i just wanted to say I am so glad i faced my fears and made up with you. Going on calls with you and just comparing notes are some of my favorite moments because i never thought that would happen just a few weeks ago. I so badly wanted to work with you, however you are just too good of a player on all fronts. I hope you take it as a compliment we took you out, no hard feelings, and i’ll tell Torsa you say hello.

Rob: I find it funny. In Bangladesh, I was obsessed with getting out the Maldives people, and in this game, it was sort of the same story. We didn’t play together but I heard MANY stories about you. You were super smart and dangerous which was why I was against you and Sherry. I didn’t talk to you after that because there’s no reason being fake and talking to you every single day. When we did eventually talk the day of the instant tribal, it solidified for me that you had to go. I didn’t have a good relationship with you, but that one conversation made me think otherwise which showed you could flip things around for you. You controlled a lot of what happened this game and had a damn good shot at winning. You didn’t get a multiple of seven this time too so congrats.

Zack: Okay, Hi, LEGEND. I love you and I had to vote you out because of your challenge advantage thing but I really hope we talk outside of this game and I really hope I can consider you a friend because I’d love to talk to you some more.

Amir: Hey cunt u know how i feel about you and i’m so lucky i was able to meet you through this game and i consider you a close friend after this game and your ass is the only ass id kiss mwah (heart)

Dustin: Abel, you getting Cirie’d truly broke my heart. Some tears were shed for sure, but you know me I cry during everything. You were one of my best friends in this game and we were on hours of calls together just gossiping about the game like school girls, and you helped me out of a really rough breakup through every step of it, and every crazy text and phone call. You are someone you don’t just meet everyday and I truly mean that. You are an amazing person, player, and overall, friend. If i was going to lose to anyone I wanted it to be you, but just know I am going to try my hardest to win for you Abel. If one good thing came out of this game, it was truly our friendship. Abel I truly do love you, and don’t let you get cirie’d get you down, you’re a winner in my book.

Rob: Abel, I am sorry. I thought you were going to make the end and win this thing because you were such a huge threat. I never heard of fake idols being planted by the hosts before so I was shocked when it turned out to be fake. I really do want to thank you, so much, for telling me about everyone’s plan to and you should be proud of the game you played. Like you offered to me, after this game if you want to talk, I’m available because under the circumstances, it was either going to be you or me. I need to apologize for the things I said that night because I did go overboard, but the thoughts, they were genuine. Like we had talked about before, I do have problems that I’m trying to handle and I am trying my best. I enjoyed our calls, you were an easy person to talk to and I felt that you were sincere in wanting to know everyone.

Zack: Honestly… The HARDEST round for me. To watch you go :( You know how much you mean to me already.. I love you.

Saigon

The 13 hour bus ride was actually 16 hours long, leaving on time at 11 pm, and crossing Cambodia in the night. Probably safer in the dark as headlights showed the oncoming traffic, and the day time fleets of motorcycles all went home. The “flat” seats were reclined to 30 degrees, padded, and made for people 5 feet tall. My feet slid under the seat in front everytime the bus braked, and I would weasel my way back up the incline, drop off to sleep again, and awake with the next slide. And it was not a through bus, but stopped in Phnom Pen to change to a day bus, and load a bunch more people. Both buses were spacious, double seats on one side, single the other, with the night bus double decked by bunk beds. Little blankets, bottle of water, a tasteless bun.. luxury! 3 hour layover in PP, totally boring like all bus stations, trying to stay awake to guard bags, despite having taken a “U Dream herbal pill”. More flat land, more overcrowding, one hell of a lot of rice. We did cross the mighty Mekong river, as wide as the Fraser  but slower and muddier. The Vietnam border was better organized, only 1 hour to process all the passengers.  And so into Saigon (aka Ho Chi MInh city) at 5 pm. Endless urban sprawl, but we left behind the drifts and mounds of plastic, all kept clean here. I even recognized some of the places from last trip, but soon swept past them to a new area closer to the river where the bus stopped curbside and dumped us all on the sidewalk. Yes Saigon has sidewalks, not all filled with pushcarts and vendors. Indeed some walkways were 20 feet wide and posed an impossible temptation to the motorcyclists, who simply jumped the curb and barreled  along the cement. Bit brain dead, but I changed some money at a dealer, and found the bus office had a travel agent. Now most travel agents are hacks who sell packages and tours. This fellow actually knew how to book buses and planes, spoke good English, and spent an hour getting my ongoing tickets. Absolutely no train seats, and all the buses were full, no tickets at all. Against my principles I had to buy a plane ticket to Quoy Nhon. Got my cheap red eye flight to Manila in February, and a train sleeper ticket from Hue to Saigon at the end of this run26 hours but lower berth with a window. So I do get a train ride after all. My own efforts to buy tickets were stymied by having no printer to produce a pass, and no phone to show the ticket on. I am the last person in Asia to not have a phone, and for tickets and pictures it would have been a good choice.

Saigon is safe but the sex trade is hot. Next to the agents stand five scantily clad women had blocked the sidewalk and were literally grabbing passing men. No takers while I was there, it was early, but the travel agent assured me that sitting there long enough he saw everything possible happen on the street. I did find a cart on the street selling Pho, that delicious chicken soup, noodles sprouts and cilantro slurped on a tiny stool right on the sidewalk. The couple selling the Pho did a terrific business with office workers lining up for take out,  motocyclists driving up to get soup in a bag, and what I thought were dozens of flashily uniformed security guards, who actually were the guys who park the motorcycles in 3 deep packed rows outside the businesses, for a parking fee of course. I wanted a hait trim but the shop across the alley from my hotel was permanently busy and the “barber shop” was selling more than a trim.  After a lunch baguette I found a legitimate salon and got my split ends nipped off. I bought some takeaway for the next days travel, wandered the side streets, overarched with big leafy trees, and got lost in a maze of alleys. My internal compass works and I found the Main drag in a bit. Seemed a short day, still sleep deprived, so early night.

Mr. Nicholas Sparks, considered as one of the world’s best storytellers. He was born on the 31st Day of December 1965 in Omaha, Nebraska. He was a writer of the best-selling novels in the world, to name a few are the novels, “The Notebook”, “The Choice”, “A Walk to Remember”’, “The Rescue”, “Safe Haven” and many more. Truly, Mr. Sparks is one of this generation’s renowned author.

DESCRIPTION OF THE BOOK

“How far would you go to keep the hope of love?”

           The majestic question that the novels sought to answer. The Choice, a 2007 award-winning novel written by one of the world’s greatest storyteller, Nicholas Sparks. The said novels tackles about the choices we make each day, the choices we face in life. The main characters, Gabby and Travis, a perfect representation of a couple, the one who is firm his decisions and the one who may be challenged each day but stayed to be strong. Moreover, this novel elucidates some of the most important aspects in life; friends, love and family.

Q U E S T I O N S:

3. Based on what the characters say or do, what can you infer about their attributes/personalities?

           The characters of the book were formulated to carry out specific attributes; Travis Shaw and Gabby Holland.

           Travis Shaw, a veterinarian by profession, is a static character, since his character does not change for the whole story. He is always concrete about his thoughts, just like in the story, he never regrets any of his decisions and even if turbulence along the way occurs, he finds way to be firm in whatever he takes. Moreover, the book elucidates how Travis’ feelings for Gabby never changed. Though he knew that Gabby has a fiancé, he still pursued her despite of the occurrence of the unyielding times. In addition, the story also showed how he proved his loyalty to Gabby, because even if she suffered a coma for a non-specific time, his love never changed.

           Gabby Holland, an in tern medical student at the time she meet Travis, is a dynamic character, at the beginning of the novel she was defined as a young, strong headed, independent and a non-sociable woman but towards the end everything changed. In addition, Mr. Sparks also described her as an attractive redheaded. In the story, Gabby was the fiancé of Kevin, the son of the owner of the hospital where she was taking her internship. Then she meet a newly transferred neighbor, Travis. Her actions directly reflects how she was unsure of things. The story provided multitude of challenges for her, she was challenged through continually making choices in life, a choice for whom he would love and a choice for lifetime. Though a lot of unyielding times challenged her, she still stick to her made choices and never regretted of doing so.

           All in all, both characters developed attributes that are suitable for the said novel, the Choice.

         Sir, I am writing this letter to express my views upon your works. To tell you honestly sir I am not a wide rider nor a book worm, and was only forced to read for academic purposes. Even if I will force myself to be driven with will to read but the fire won’t even lit nor just spark. Once I though reading is something that does not really belong to my vocabulary and even concluded that reading novels and books isn’t really for me.

           Your book “The Choice” was endorsed by my classmate but I was unsure and was hesitant if the story line won’t amaze me. Believe me sir, I only said yes because I was stuck and had no choice. The moment I started to read your piece I was really in awe and was left astounded.

           Sir, I really wondered on how were you able to establish this kinds of plots that your stories never really failed to amaze your readers. The morale your stories provide really pinches one’s heart. If given a chance to meet you personally, I will really be honored because I would really love to know your own story, your colorful story.

           Mr. Sparks, I am very much looking forward for more interactions with you through your other novels. A Day at Perry’s

Dukey and Davey arrive at Perry's house. The smell of salt in the air. Perry opens the door. He is dressed in some sort of uniform but Dukey and Davey can’t tell what kind.

Perry: Hey guys. Welcome to mi casa. Please excuse the smell. We have a west wind today and it's blowing the smell of the ship channel over here.

Davey: Reminds me of when I was working at the Pier where I met Dukey.

Perry: Won't you come in?

Dukey: Thank you for having us over!

They go in and see a nice middle class house before them. It's a fairly large size, probably built in 2011. There are high celings, an open floor plan with bedrooms on the left and an office on the right. Straight ahead is the living room/kitchen. A nice 55 inch 4K UHD TV is on the wall along with a nice sofa and leather chair. The kitchen has stainless steel appliances and an island in the middle. Several windows look out on an acre of wooded land.

Perry: Yeah, it's nice but that's not why we're here. To the media room!

Dukey and Davey follow Perry to a wall with two levers on it.

Perry: Pull the lever, Davey!

Davey pulls the lever on the left, opening a trap door below Perry.

The coaster starts down the track with a long drop, passing through several colorful tunnels. It suddenly stops at a ticket booth and a hand reaches out.

Perry: Oh. Where'd I put the ticket? Where is that ticket?

Dukey: Did you try the glove compartment?

Perry opens it and finds the ticket.

Perry: Why do I always forget to look there?

Perry hands the ticket to the teller and the coaster continues down the track. After the coaster ride all land on the carpeted floor of a theater. Dukey and Davey give each other a high five.

Dukey: That was the best roller coaster ever!

They all run over to a table with a bunch of items on it.

Perry: Now let's see, where did I put that movie? Aha! Here it is! I'll put this on, pop some popcorn and enjoy. Brilliant!

Dukey and Davey sat together. Soon Perry returns with some fresh popcorn.

Perry: The movie will begin in a moment.

They all settle down and enjoy one of Disney’s best films. After the movie ends Perry stands up.

Perry: How about we head upstairs and enjoy the night sky?

Dukey: Sure! I could go for a bit of stargazing.

Perry: Perfect! To the living room!

Everyone gets back in the coaster and begins the ride back up. As the coaster rounds a loop it suddenly stops.

Voice: Your ride has temporarily stopped moving and will resume in a moment. Please remain seated.

Dukey: So what's the point of this coaster?

Perry: Eh, it's just for fun.

After a 10 second wait the coaster returns everyone to the main floor.

Perry: Step outside onto the porch and I'll be back with some drinks and music. Any orders?

Dukey: Diet cola!

Davey: Mountain Dew.

Perry: Out in a sec.

Perry returns with the drinks as well as an iPad.

Perry: Now, what kind of music would you like?

Dukey: Maybe play some light mood music

Perry: Let's see, Justin Beaver, Capital Kings, Meagan Trainer... Ah! This should do.

Perry put on some soft piano music from Jim Brickman. Time marched on and it got later.

Perry: Ok. It's been a while. Want to do something else?

Dukey: Okay, what do you wanna do?

Perry: You're the guest. I'll let you decide.

Davey: I saw a pool table. Maybe we could shoot a few rounds?

Dukey: Oh yes! You'll love it. Davey's the best pool player I've ever seen.

Perry: I'm not too shabby myself. Let's go in.

They head in and straight to the pool table.

Perry: Grab a stick from the stand while I go find the balls.

Dukey is bent over wheezing.

Dukey: I'm gonna need a few minutes.

After an “eventful dance” Perry is panting.

Perry inserts the disc and gets the game loaded. They play a couple of rounds of Wheel. After the final round Perry looks at the clock.

Perry leads them down the main hall to a side one with a guest room. It has a full size bed and a few small pieces of furnature. A bathroom is right outside the door.
