TRUTH | This stat is kinda horrifying. To know that only 15% of consumers recycle their clothing boggles my mind. Growing up, my mom would literally sort through the garbage to make sure we were recycling properly and we would go to the @salvationarmyvancouver on the reg to donate clothing, small electronics, home wares and accessories that we were no longer using. So, to know that other people don’t do that is just astonishing. We don’t realize that our “stuff” eventually just becomes waste and there’s only so much waste we can create. It’s time to inform ourselves, learn about where our waste goes and what happens to it so we can start thinking twice about putting that shirt in the garbage. Places that take donations will even take ripped or stained garments as they have the streams to deal with it such as downcyclers who turn material into insulation or stuffing for chair etc. So when in doubt, donate. We also need to be a lot more conscious when we are purchasing items so we don’t end up with so much waste. That s%!& never breaks down...it’s plastic! Do yourself a favour and check the label on the inside of your clothing (just like you do with your food) and take note of what your clothes are made out of and where they’re made. Then, educate yourself. There’s a reason why that shirt cost $15. It’s the people making your clothes and the planet that are paying the true cost.
