VIATT 2025 set to advance sustainability and digitalisation in Vietnam’s textile industry

In recent years, Vietnam has rapidly transformed into one of the world’s key textile producers, solidifying its position as the world’s third-ranked exporter behind China and Bangladesh. With a history rooted in silk textile craftsmanship and currently embracing wide ranging modern textile production, the country’s thriving sector offers tremendous growth prospects for both domestic and international businesses. In a bid to harness the potential in Vietnam and Southeast Asia, the Vietnam International Trade Fair for Apparel, Textiles and Textile Technologies (VIATT) will return from 26 – 28 February 2025, with a renewed focus on promoting sustainability and digital transformation.
Vietnam's textile and apparel sector comprises approximately 7,000 companies and employs over three million workers, with 80% of production capacity used for export and 20% for domestic consumption. Progress is aided by well-developed logistics networks, skilled labour and a stable political environment. As its textile industry evolves, several key trends are influencing its future direction, reflecting a growing emphasis on sustainability and technological advancement, and leading to new opportunities for exhibitors and buyers across the value chain at Vietnam’s comprehensive textile showcase.
Major trends shaping Vietnam's textile market reflected at VIATT
More Vietnamese enterprises are adopting eco-friendly materials, including organic cotton, recycled polyester, and Tencel, while numerous global brands manufacture in Vietnam, and have committed to the "Fashion Industry Charter on Climate Action", aiming to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
To further advance sustainable initiatives in the domestic and international textile industry, VIATT 2025 will introduce Econogy Hub, a dedicated platform for innovative, eco-friendly suppliers and service providers to connect with like-minded visitors. The show’s other new Texpertise Econogy features will include the Econogy Finder, an independent verification tool to help sustainable exhibitors effectively communicate their green credentials, and Econogy Talks, the overarching category for eco-focused seminars, forums, and product presentations.
Apart from sustainability, the Vietnamese textile industry is also embracing advanced technologies in design and manufacturing. The launch of the fair’s Innovation & Digital Solutions Zone will provide a centralised platform for exhibitors to showcase innovations such as 3D printing, AI-driven design, and digital printing, which enable manufacturers to boost efficiency and customise products to meet specific market demands.
As well as the introduction of two new product zones, the India Pavilion, organised by The Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council (TEXPROCIL), will also make its debut at VIATT 2025. Additionally, the Japan and Taiwan Pavilions have confirmed their return, with the Japan Pavilion recognised by VIATT’s visitors as a standout showcase within Southeast Asia's textile fair landscape. Overall, the fair will feature a diverse range of exhibitors across apparel, home textiles, and technical textiles, with many showcasing innovative and sustainable products. Expanding on its commitment to cultivating a responsible supply chain within the apparel industry, Lenzing announced during Climate Week NYC that in September it launched carbon-zero Tencel fibers. Climate Week NYC, which was held Sept. 21–27, was the perfect opportunity for the Austria-headquartered company to announce the latest advancement in its long line of renewable, wood-based fibers, which will see the calculation and offset of emissions from the processing of this product, according to the guidelines of The CarbonNeutral Protocol.
Following the announcement, Florian Heubrandner, vice president of global business management of textiles for Lenzing, shared how the year-and-a-half-long path to carbon-zero Tencel began.
“It all starts with the raw material, dissolved wood pulp, which we source from a low-carbon-footprint location,” he said. “Next, we only produce Tencel Carbon Zero in our Austrian production sites where we have the lowest carbon footprint in our entire group. We’ve made additional investments in energy efficiency and green energy to avoid carbon emissions wherever we can.”
While Heubrandner explains that the process begins with Lenzing’s wood-pulp sources, he reveals that the company cannot reach carbon zero alone. Due to the potential for environmental impacts along the supply chain from individual partners, Lenzing relies on partnerships with its suppliers and ecologically focused solutions providers.
“We’ve collaborated successfully with suppliers to make sure they reduce the carbon footprint of their products. All these measures result in a carbon footprint that is 65 percent to 80 percent lower than generic lyocell or modal fibers,” he said. “The [small] carbon footprint that is still left we compensate for with offsetting credits from Natural Capital Partners. There is a roadmap in place to make sure we become better every year and reduce the offsetting part step by step. Natural Capital Partners verifies our progress in that respect.”
On Sept. 22, the same day that Lenzing made its announcement, Heubrandner participated in a webinar called “Action Toward Climate Change.” The panel included an introduction by Annemarie Hou, executive director of the United Nations Office for Partnerships, and moderation by Kerry Bannigan, executive producer of the SDG Media Zone and founder of the Conscious Fashion Campaign. Heubrandner was joined by fellow panelists Lewis Perkins, executive director of the Apparel Impact Institute, and Jad Finck, vice president of innovation and sustainability at the San Francisco–headquartered Allbirds, which is a Lenzing partner.
“We try to use the lowest carbon materials possible and the lowest carbon processes possible,” Fink explained during the webinar. “That is a great area where we can work with an important partner of ours, Lenzing, to use a lot of Tencel Lyocell. It’s the fundamental product for our entire tree platform—a very low-carbon product, amazing environmental footprint. That is why we’re excited today to be talking about their new initiatives.”
The benefit of Lenzing’s partnerships with companies such as Allbirds who share its ideals and sustainable vision is also beneficial for the fiber producer in its quest to become carbon neutral. Working with like-minded brands affords greater visibility to Lenzing’s mission in addition to creating a responsible-apparel community.
“We need partners like Allbirds to help share the ‘burden’ that comes with these targets and commitments. Becoming carbon neutral involves heavy financial investments and time from our people,” Heubrandner said while noting the importance of his colleagues across different Lenzing departments. “By paying a [little] bit more for our most sustainable products, our partners help advance the industry. Of course, we know that cost competitiveness is particularly important these days, and that’s why we make sure that Tencel Carbon Zero is available at very reasonable prices.”
While Lenzing has long emphasized its commitment to sustainable fiber sourcing over the course of its 80 years in business, consumer awareness is continuing to shift toward examining the impact of the products they buy, including apparel. During its “Global Consumer Perception Survey on Sustainable Raw Materials in Fashion and Home Textiles” survey, which was conducted in early 2020, Lenzing discovered that respondents are engaging actively in furthering their education regarding a product’s sustainability prior to purchase, in addition to placing the most trust in brands whose ingredient lists and origins are transparent. This change toward a more-conscientious consumer has accelerated over the course of the year.
“What we are learning, particularly in the last six months, is that we see a real shift within the apparel-and-footwear industry as individuals are questioning their relationship to materials and products and questioning their values as it relates to the planet as a whole and also consumption and production,” Perkins said.
With a goal to reduce its specific greenhouse-gas emissions by 50 percent by 2030, Lenzing believes its introduction of a carbon-zero product will facilitate its arrival at this goal. While Lenzing notes that it is the first wood-based fiber manufacturer in the industry with approved Science Based Targets, Heubrandner sees this latest product as reaching beyond those guidelines.
“I think it will help us because Tencel Carbon Zero goes beyond the Science Based Targets,” he said. “Also, it makes our sustainability leadership and commitment even more prominent and will motivate us to offer more and more products in a carbon neutral way and turn our sites more sustainable faster.”
Adhering to an approach rooted in “progress, not perfection,” Heubrandner sees hope as brands that are committing to United Nations Sustainable Development Goals continue to receive increasing acknowledgment for their efforts. As a personal observation, he often recognizes these brands as sources for “cool” approaches to design and branding, sentiments he feels are shared by many consumers.
“I think the current crisis has shown us that we can all make a contribution. Every ton of CO2 that gets avoided counts,” Heubrandner said. “Also, consumers start paying more attention to these initiatives as they understand the environmental impact that the fashion industry has on our planet.”

adidas and Allbirds announce the first product from their collaboration, FUTURECRAFT.FOOTPRINT. At 2.94kg CO2e it represents a personal best for both brands as the result of a collective ambition to make a performance running shoe with no carbon footprint.  
Seeing the possibilities of accelerating a carbon neutral future for sports and style, the two companies teamed up to forge a unique partnership: opening up their materials, supply chains and innovations to each other.  
With each pair having a carbon footprint of just 2.94kg CO2e and created with 63% less emissions*, FUTURECRAFT.FOOTPRINT showcases a new approach to more sustainable design and an alternative method of manufacturing that drastically reduces carbon impact.
“Our partnership with Allbirds is a beacon of what can happen when competing brands from the same industry see the possibilities in coming together to design. By truly co-creating and providing each other with open access to knowledge and resources – such as Allbirds’ knowledge of carbon calculation and experience with natural materials, and adidas’ capabilities in manufacturing and performance footwear – this is a call-to-action for other brands, and a milestone in the sports industry achieving carbon neutrality,” said Brian Grevy, Executive Board Member Global Brands at adidas.
Embracing a lower-carbon development process, the teams collaborated digitally from development to delivery, working across multiple time zones on opposite sides of the world. Together, the Allbirds and adidas counterparts across product design, material innovation, sustainability and supply chain studied every component and all aspects of the process with an analytical methodology. In under 12 months, they reimagined materials, manufacturing techniques and even packaging to reach the lowest possible footprint – whilst chasing the vision for a low-carbon shoe without compromising on performance.

Representing another material collaboration, the newly developed upper material is made with 70% recycled polyester and 30% natural Tencel – a material made from wood pulp – for a smooth, lightweight upper that lives up to performance expectations with a highly reduced carbon impact.

Sustainability influences businesses to take a more active approach in improving the environment. Increasingly, companies have issued goals such as commitment to zero-waste packaging by a certain year, or to reduce overall emissions by a certain percentage.
The environmental impact of the fashion industry 
Although the fashion industry is striving toward a more sustainable future, the industry still has a disastrous impact on the environment. It is considered to be the second biggest polluter of the world, just after the oil industry; and the impact is only increasing environmental damages as the industry continues to grow.
Water pollution
In a lot of the countries that garments are typically produced; untreated toxic waste waters from these textile factories are dumped directly into the rivers.
Waste water contains toxic substances, such as lead, mercury and arsenic among many others. These have an extremely harmful impact on the aquatic life and the health of those living near these rivers.The contamination eventually reaches the sea and eventually spreads around the globe.
Another major source of water contamination is the extended use of fertilisers for cotton production, which heavily pollutes run off and evaporation waters.
To prevent this we should choose clothes made in countries that have stricter environmental regulations for factories ie Canada, the EU and Us.
We should also choose more organic and natural fibres that do not require chemicals to be produced.
Water Consumption
The fashion industry is a major water consumer.
Large quantities of fresh water are used for the dyeing and finishing process for all of our clothes. To put this into perspective; It can take up to 200 tonnes of fresh water per tonne of dyed fabric.
Cotton also needs large amounts of water to grow; Up to 20,000 litres of water are needed to produce 1kg of cotton. This causes many issues, one being that it generates tremendous pressure on this already scarce source and secondly, it has dramatic ecological consequences such as the decertification of the Aral Sea; where cotton production has completely drained out the water.

The fashion industry is accountable for 10% of global carbon emissions.
The industry is generating a lot of greenhouse gases due to the amount of energy that is used during its production and manufacturing process as well as the transportation of garments each year.
Synthetic fibres(Polyester, acrylic, nylon etc.) which are used in the majority of our clothes, are made from fossil fuel; making this a more energy-intensive   process than with natural fibres. Most of our clothing is produced in countries that are essentially powered by coal like China, Bangladesh and India to name few. It is because of this that we should be conscious of more soil friendly fibres.
Rainforest Destruction
Every year, thousands of hectares of endangered and ancient rainforests are cut down and replaced by plantation of trees used to make wood-based fabrics such as rayon, viscose and modal.
The loss of forests are a direct threat to the ecosystem and indigenous communities. Over the past decade Indonesia has suffered large- scale deforestation of its rainforests.

We can even see this type of thing with fast fashion retailers like ‘Boohoo’ who had been reported to only be paying their workers at their Leicester factory a meagre £3.50 an hour, when the minimum legal wage in the UK for those aged 25 and above stands at £8.72.Despite these claims BooHoo still managed to accumulate a surge in sales. It is also worth mentioning that Boohoo’s sister company ‘Pretty Little Thing’ received backlash after their Black Friday sale which reduced its products down to 99%. It was also discovered that during this current climate, the staff at the Leicester factory were not wearing protective face masks to help stop the spread of the coronavirus and so it comes as no surprise to find out the fashion workers are exploited and forced to work in health compromising working conditions in poorer climates. Garment workers are forced often forced to work 14-16 hours a day, 7 days a week in order to meet the brands deadlines. Because these workers have such a low income, a lot of them are unable to refuse overtime and in some cases, overtime is not even paid at all.
The collapse of the Rana Plaza, in 2013, killing 1134 garment workers in Dhaka, Bangladesh has given us a peek into the unacceptable labour conditions of these garment making factories within the fashion industry.

Workers are often left without ventilation; breathing in toxic substances. Accidents, fires, injuries and disease are very prevalent occurrences within these unethical textile production sites.
It is estimated that 168 billion children in the world are forced to work. Because the fashion industry requires low-skilled labour, children are often recruited and this is very prominent in the industry. In South India, 250,000 girls work under the sumangali scheme, in which girls are sent to work for 3-5 years in a textile factory in exchange for a basic wage and a lump sum at the end of their dowry. These children are often left overworked and are forced to live in appalling conditions.

The meaning of sustainable fashion is having the intention to reduce environmental impact and improve social conditions within the industry.

Circular Fashion as explained by A. Brismar 2017 is “defined as clothes, shoes or accessories that are designed, sourced, produced and provided with the intention to be used and circulated responsibly and effectively in society for as long as possible in their most valuable farmland hereafter return safely to the biosphere when no longer of human use.”
