Canon Has New Lens Patents, But Are They Worth The Wait?
Telephoto lenses are loved by various genres of photographers as they allow you to see distant objects in close proximity. Whether you are a wildlife photographer, a photojournalist, or even an event photographer, everyone has some use of these lenses in their day-to-day tasks. There are also super telephoto lenses, which encompass a much larger focal range and are great options for amateur and…

Zoom In: Why You Should Consider a Telephoto Lens?
Let's talk about telephoto lenses, those unsung heroes of photography that often don't get the spotlight they deserve. They might not have the glamour of wide-angle lenses or the charm of macro lenses, but trust us, they have some superpowers that can seriously up your photography game. In this laid-back guide, we're going to chill with telephoto lenses, check out what they can do, and why you might want to make them your new photography BFF.
What's the Deal with Telephoto Lenses?
Before we get into all the "whys" and "hows," let's kick it off with the basics. What exactly is a telephoto lens?
Well, it's like a magnifying glass for your camera. Imagine you want to get up close and personal with something far away—like capturing a bird in the sky, a soccer player on the field, or even the moon on a clear night. A telephoto lens lets you do that without having to physically get closer. It's like your camera's way of saying, "I got this!"
What you’ll love About Telephoto Lenses?
So, why should you consider cozying up to a telephoto lens? Here are some solid reasons:
1. Zoom and Get Closer
The most obvious perk is that telephoto lenses let you zoom in on distant subjects. You can make faraway things look like they're right in front of you. That bird in the sky? Bam! It's like it's perched on your windowsill.
2. Blurry Backgrounds, Sharp Subjects
You know that dreamy background blur everyone loves? Telephoto lenses can make that happen. With a wide aperture, like f/2.8 or f/4, you can create a buttery-smooth background while keeping your subject super sharp.
3. Versatility Galore
These lenses are like the chameleons of photography. They're not just for zooming. You can use them for portraits, street snaps, and even landscape shots. No need to swap lenses every two seconds; telephoto lenses adapt on the fly.
4. Steady as She Goes
Shaky hands? No worries! Many telephoto lenses come with image stabilization. That means you can get crisp shots even if your hands aren't as steady as a tripod.
Tips for Rocking Your Telephoto Lens
Now that you're excited about telephoto lenses, here are some tips to help you make the most of them:
1. Stay Steady
Longer lenses magnify the camera shake, so use a tripod or find a solid surface to steady your shot.
2. Mind Your Speed
For handheld shots, remember the "focal length equals shutter speed" rule. If you're shooting at 200mm, use a shutter speed of at least 1/200th of a second.
3. Play with Aperture
Experiment with different aperture settings to control background blur and depth of field. It's like painting with light.
4. Focus Like a Boss
Telephoto lenses have shallow depth of field, so nail that focus. Use autofocus for speed or go manual for precision.
5. Watch the Atmosphere
When shooting far-off subjects, keep an eye out for things like heat waves or air pollution, which can mess with your image quality.
Why You Should Get in on the Telephoto Action
In a world where we're often obsessed with the big picture, telephoto lenses encourage you to zoom in and pay attention to the small stuff. They let you capture moments and details that might have gone unnoticed.
So, if you've ever wished you could get closer to your subjects, or you've been intrigued by the idea of magnifying the world around you, a telephoto lens might be your next photography adventure. It's like having a secret weapon that unveils the beauty in everyday moments, whether they're near or far. Skyvik, a brand I trust, helps me capture moments that touch my heart. A telephoto lens reminds you that the world is full of incredible stories, and sometimes, you just need to zoom in to see them.

Mandy and Lara Sirdah of Gaza City are birders. Those twin sisters, now in their late forties, started photographing birds in their backyard almost a decade ago. They began posting their pictures on social media, eventually visiting marshlands and other sites of vibrant bird activity in the Gaza Strip. They’re not trained biologists, but their work documenting the birds of Gaza was crucial to the publication of that territory’s first bird checklist in 2023. If it weren’t for the Israeli occupation — and now the full-scale war that has killed more than 34,000 people, 72 percent of them women and children, and damaged or destroyed 62 percent of all housing — Gaza would be ideal for birding. Like much of the Middle East, the territory lies under one of the world’s great flyways for millions of migrating birds. Its Mediterranean coast attracts shorebirds. Wadi Gaza, a river-fed ravine and floodplain that snakes its way across the middle of Gaza, is home to more than 100 bird species, as well as rare amphibians and other riparian creatures. In other words, that strip of land is a birder’s paradise. Or it would be a paradise, except that, as the Daily Beast reported a year ago (long before the current war began): “Being a bird-watcher in Gaza means facing endless restrictions. Israel controls Gaza’s territorial waters, airspace, and the movement of people and goods, except at the border with Egypt. Most Palestinians who grew up in Gaza since the closure imposed in 2007, when Hamas seized control from the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority, have never left the 25-by-7-mile strip.” Gazan birders encounter other barriers, as well. Even if they can afford to buy binoculars or cameras with telephoto lenses, the Israeli government views such equipment as having “dual use” potential (that is, possibly serving military as well as civilian purposes) and so makes those items very difficult to acquire. It took the Sirdahs, for example, five months of wrangling and various permission documents simply to get their birding equipment into Gaza. Getting equipment in was hard enough, but getting out of Gaza, for any reason, has become nearly impossible for its Palestinian residents. Along with most of its 2.3 million inhabitants, the sisters simply couldn’t leave the territory, even before the present nightmare, to attend birding conferences, visit exhibitions of their photography, or receive awards for their work. They were imprisoned on a strip of land that’s about the size of the island in Massachusetts where I’ve been watching birds lately. When I try to imagine life in Gaza today, I sometimes think about what it would be like to shove a couple of million people into this tiny place, chase them with bombs and missiles from one end of it to the other, and then start all over again, as Israel seems to be about to do in the southern Gazan city of Rafah with its million-plus refugees.

Need a Telephoto Lens? These Are Great Ones!
I mean, this is one of the reasons why you get an interchangeable lens camera anyway, right?
Why did you buy a camera? If you’re new to photography, it’s probably because you wanted better pictures than what your phone gives you. Lots of folks do it because they want a telephoto lens that lets them zoom in on a scene. This is far better than using the digital zoom or other lenses on your smartphone. And so if you’re buying your first lens, we’ve got a few fantastic options to recommend.…

this is a slight detour from your usual subject matter but i'm very curious about your experience renting a high-quality camera lens? how did you go about doing that and have you been pleased with how it worked out? (the changing of hands i mean, it's clear you're happy with the lens!)
i didn't know this was a Thing before and now i'm wondering if i might be able to try that myself!
Oh yeah, it's absolutely the best thing if you can't afford fancy lenses / want to try out new gear / just need something for a special occasion.
There are places you can rent online that will ship you gear, and depending on where you live you can often also rent from local camera stores. I've done both!
Right now my main practice is renting lenses from LensRentals, which is an online company that ships out of Tennessee. They've got pretty reasonable rental prices, and they don't charge a deposit - but you do sign a thing saying if you damage or lose it, they can charge you. You can also pay for insurance on the rentals against damage or loss which would mitigate a lot of that cost if something went wrong. I've heard a range of opinions about them, but I've pretty much always had a good experience with them and gotten stuff on time that worked correctly, and their customer service has been really responsive for me when we had some snafus with shipping stuff back lately. One thing they do that I really like is their system is set up with an option to ship directly to FedEx stores for you to pick up, which means I don't have to worry about a package containing pricey gear getting stolen or rained on.
LensRentals also is willing to let you buy their rental gear, which is what I'm hoping to do before I send the really nice huge telephoto lens I've been using back tomorrow. They'll take some of the price of your rental off the purchase cost - it isn't a ton, but it generally covers sales tax and maybe a little more. I like it as a way to purchase used gear because I can see the condition before I commit, and I've had it in my hands and gotten to use it a bunch. That's how I bought my first real digital camera like a decade ago, and where I got my current camera and starter lenses.
If you've got a local rental store, I absolutely encourage going through them! I've done that when traveling - there have been some times I wanted a specific piece of gear to test on a habitat - and it's worked out really well. Plus, supporting local businesses is always the right choice. They'll often all operate a little differently, but it's nice to know people IRL who can help you decide what gear to use or just nerd out with you. Sometimes local places will ask for some type of deposit to make sure you bring the gear back, and TBH if that's within your budget it's perfectly reasonable.
Unfortunately, the local rental place in my area charges a deposit to your credit card for the entire worth your rental until you bring it home, and my credit limit isn't high enough that I can float a hold for that (e.g. upwards of four thousand dollars for the two lenses I'm using lately) and still be able to, y'know, use my card, so I go with online rentals. It drives me up a wall! I'd really like to support local businesses and minimize shipping costs / carbon emissions.
If you think you'd like to rent some gear to try out, I recommend it! Just make sure you know what's compatible with your camera, you've got a safe way to transport and store the rental when you're not using it, and that you know the terms up front. It's been such a fun way to play around and see what I like and what works well for me.

"A DISGUSTING INVASION OF PRIVACY" PALACE CRIES FOWL OVER ANYA AND GUS PHOTO LEAKS
Our favourite newlyweds are currently on their secret honeymoon, but it looks like it's not so secret, after all!
Last night multiple paparazzi photos showing Anya and Gus on a beach were posted by a Champs Les Sims tabloid on their website and social media accounts. The photos also predominantly feature on the gossip rag's latest issue, out today.
The photos were released with the headline:
"SEE ANYA AND GUS' TROPICAL LOVE FEST!"
Snippets of the article are reproduced and translated below:
"Brindleton's future Queen should reconsider and ditch her dowdy long dresses and stuffy coats, especially since the whole world now knows what she's hiding underneath her grandma outfits. Maybe flash some more cleavage! She should throw a palace pool party and wear that tiny red bikini again so her royal subjects can get a better look!"
"Brindleton need not wonder why Anya waited so long to marry so she could track down Gus - look at him! Wonder what he's hiding under his flashy green shorts?!"
A total of five different photographs were published by the tabloid. The grainy snaps, clearly taken using a long-range lens, show the couple enjoying what should have been their private vacation. Included in the released photos are intimate pictures of Anya and Gus kissing and hugging.
The article claims that the photos were taken on a private island, off the coast of Enamorada. The tabloid also admits to using high-power telephoto lenses from a yacht to capture the photos.
The Palace is reportedly outraged, and a well-placed source claims:
"There are now serious talks about what legal remedies the Prince and the Crown Princess may seek against the magazine. They have spoken to The Queen and their legal team.
Their Royal Highnesses feel betrayed and disappointed at this disgusting invasion of their privacy. After a very public wedding, they were hoping they could finally privately enjoy their new life together, even for just a little while."
Several women's groups have also shown their dismay and called out the rag for being "demeaning and utterly misogynistic."
Side note - look, we know that Gus has tattoos but we didn't know he had this many! Is that a massive pair of wings on his back!?
Okay, back to the important matter - we're hoping TRHs sue the crap out of this tabloid because this is so abhorrent and incredibly upsetting! Leave these two be! They're on their honeymoon, for crying out loud! They already gave us a very public engagement and wedding - let them enjoy each other's company in peace!

Dream is famous; Hob is decidedly not. And really the press intrusion into their relationship has not died down at all.
Every time Hob tell Dream they have to talk, Dream is worried that this time the telephoto lense spying in while Hob is teaching, or the paparazzi following as Hob goes grocery shopping, or the drone that keeps trying to photograph their backyard, will be the last straw -- that Hob is breaking up with him.
They just recently had to hire more security for Hob as Dream's more aggressive "fans" have been making threats. It's so disruptive.
Dream hopes Hob school continues to support him through all the chaos, but maybe this is too much finally. So when Hob said they needed to talk this time, Dream was sure this was the end.
Aww, poor Dream! It's not his fault that all this stuff is happening! He doesn't realise that Hob honestly doesn't really mind. As long as he gets to be Dream’s boyfriend, he's happy with his life!!
And he actually wants to talk to Dream about something completely different! See, he's been teaching for a long time, and as much as he loves it he's kind of hankering to do something else. He'd really like to go back to school himself and finally get his phd! He always wanted to do it after his masters but it kinda got pushed to the side by needing to work, needing money. Now he's stable enough in life to finally do the research he's passionate about! It'll give the gossip columns something new to talk about, hah.
And there's something else that Hob wants to talk about too. With a new chapter opening in his life, he'd really like to talk to Dream about the next step in their relationship. He wouldn't want to just spring a proposal on Dream without discussing it first! So he'd like to now if Dream would consider marriage? Maybe moving in together? Hob knows that he's not exciting and doesn't have much to offer, but he's really hoping that his love will be enough.
Of course, Dream was expecting a breakup, so a preliminary proposal is definitely a BIG improvement. He's quick to say YES and also insist on the two of them moving in together, asap. He can't wait to support Hob as he starts his phd, it's so exciting!!
The press are of course like "DREAM'S GOLD DIGGER BOYFRIEND PURSUES USELESS DEGREE" and Hob has the articles framed for their hallway. He can't wait to propose to Dream properly. Maybe at his useless graduation???
