New Rome Make-up πŸ™‹πŸ™‹πŸ™‹πŸ‘ΉπŸ™‹
So a question always considered about New Rome is if its a solely magical town. For the most part it is, but there are also a few mortals as well! Some of the more involved mortals handle the domestic affairs outside of New Rome, but others treat New Rome as a normal town. It begs the question: how many mortals live in New Rome?
tl;dr? New Rome is home to many! In the city's population, about 73% of citizens are a legacy, 19.7% are monsters, 7.3% are mortal, but only 2.4% of the population can't see through the mist!✨While one in every 5 people is a monster, roughly only one in 40 people can't see through the mist!
Here's the deep dive if you went below the Read More πŸ’•:
This is a (rough) make-up of the town:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Image Description: Two pie charts, both titled "New Rome Population". The first pie chart is made of three colors: purple, the biggest chunk labeled 73.0% representing Legacies; green, the next biggest chunk labeled 19.7% representing Monsters; and blue, the smallest chunk labeled 7.3% representing Humans. The second pie chart is the same, except the purple slice is now divided between a dark and bright purple. The dark purple represents "Legacies (First Gen) and is only 20% of the pie chart, while the bright purple is worth 53.0% of the pie chart. It is labeled as "Legacies (Non-First Gen)". END ID]
About 73% of those in New Rome are legacies of some sort because of generations of Romans living here, while only about 20% of the entire population are first-generation demigods (this number increases exponentially when Greeks begin to move in). There are more friendly monsters than mortals which makes sense- it's probably best to live under the surveillance of demigods rather than getting sliced and diced on the street. The term 'Monsters' is applied to most creatures, for instance, Argus, satyrs, talking animals, and pegasi fall into this category. However this means that over 91.7% of New Rome is filled with magical beings. What is the other 7.3%?
πŸ” Here is a closer look on that <10%:
There is no research on how many mortals can see through the Mist. It's assumed that all mortal parents to demigod children can see through the mist, but this isn't true! So we'll take our percentage based on the Seven: Sally, Emily, and Fredrick are definite yeses; Tristan is a confirmed no; Esperanza, Beryl, and Marie are questionable. We'll move Marie to yes, because it seems very likely with her Hecate connection, and we'll move Beryl to yes as well (she bragged about getting with Zeus twice so it's assumed she knows). Esperanza will be moved to the no's, for lack of evidence to sway her over.
So if the Seven is our sample, then 5/7 mortals would see through the mist. However, we have to remove Emily Zhang as she is the only one who also classified as a legacy- not a normal mortal. So that makes it 4/6 mortals.
Back to the 7.3%.... only 2/3 of those can see the mist, so 1/3 of the mortals living in New Rome can not see through the Mist! This is about 2.4% of all New Rome citizens are normal mortals living in a strange town with no clue!
Imagine living in a place where children disappear and run around in armor, statues seem to move, there's whispers of a ghost, and neighbors don't come out in the day. What a cute little town 😌
So we get these stats:
73% of citizens are a legacy
20% of legacies have a god as a parent
19.7% of citizens are monsters
7.3% of citizens are mortal
2.4% of citizens can't see through the mist (are not clear sighted)

Why live in New Rome if you're a mortal?
New Rome was created for a safe place for demigods, and mortals we're not kept in mind, but here are the most common reasons why a mortal lives there:
β†’ πŸ‘Ά born into a legacy family but genes got a little skimpy down the line
β†’ πŸ‘° married to a legacy
β†’ πŸ‘ͺ parent of a demigod child, clear sighted or not (Frederick vs Tristan)
β†’ πŸ™ˆ mixed family of clear sighted mortals and those who can't see through the mist (Sally vs Paul)
β†’ 😳 safety from evil monsters (Sally & Tristan's kidnapping)
β†’ πŸ‘€ curious clear sighted mortals (Rachel before becoming the Oracle)
It is safe to assume that the 2.4% who can not see through the mist stay in New Rome because of family and connections to the demigod world. It could be heartbreaking knowing your family lives in another world you will never understand, or to see that world and never be fully apart of it... for some mortals they could even be driven mad with the thought! New Rome does have an odd number of maniae floating around πŸ€”
... Regardless of the reason, New Rome is a happy community of legacies, monsters, and mortals! While it can be difficult for the latter to live here, surely they will find the place as comforting as their magical peers! πŸ₯°
