In which motorsport did Tai Woffinden become the first British rider to win 3 individual World Championships?

Tai Woffinden (born 1990) is a British speedway rider. In 2018, he became the first British rider to win three individual speedway World Championships. He has also won four speedway Grand Prix. Until 2014, Woffinden rode for Wolverhampton Wolves in the British Elite League, but now (2021) rides for the WTS Wrocław in the Polish Speedway Ekstraliga.

Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four to six riders competing to complete four anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. Woffinden began his career in junior speedway in Perth, Australia, where he had lived since 1994. He started his British career in 2006 with the Scunthorpe Scorpions in the Conference League.

Woffinden has since competed for several speedway teams, including Sheffield Tigers, Wolverhampton Wolves, Rye House Rockets and Poole Pirates. In 2007, he became the youngest ever rider to appear in the British Championship Final. He was also the first rider to hold both the British Under-18 and British Under-21 title during the same season (2007-2008).

As well as becoming the Individual World Champion in 2013, 2015 and 2018, Woffinden won the 'Rob Woffinden Classic' in 2012. The race is named after Woffinden's father who passed away from cancer in 2010. It is one of the biggest events for speedway bikes in Western Australia.

Books Read in 2020 #2- “Raw Speed” by Tai Woffinden (w Peter Oakes). The autobiography of the three-time Speedway world champion is like the man himself; forthright, outspoken, and in occasional need of better editing. Not for the casual reader as it assumes a pretty deep knowledge of the sport over the last couple of decades to get all the references, but “Woffy” doesn’t hold back (just like on track) about his past mistakes and the self-belief and focus that’s taken him to world titles.

So far has British speedway fallen from public awareness that few might appreciate the sport’s successes. This month the British rider Tai Woffinden was awarded the Torrens Trophy, the Royal Automobile Club’s recognition of outstanding contribution to motorcycling. He deserves it. Last October Woffinden became the first British rider to clinch the world speedway championship for a third time, following titles in 2013 and 2015. His intention is to reach Ivan Mauger and Tony Rickardsson’s mark of six.

Born in Scunthorpe, the 28-year-old grew up in Perth, Australia, where he first rode a speedway bike as a 12-year-old. He was hooked from the off. “When I get on the bike and am riding it, there is no difference from when I was 12 to now,” he says. “When I sit on the bike, holding it wide open through the corners and I know it is going fast, there is no better feeling than that. I will keep doing it until I am either paralysed or I don’t enjoy it any more, they are the only two things that will stop me. The day I stop enjoying it is the day I stop riding.”
