Reason to visit:

I have been to Hatfield Forest several times now, sometimes with family and a couple of times on my own. Today I was looking for somewhere quite close by where I could have a good walk, and spend a bit of time with my camera. I was limited on time, but I knew I could have a walk around the lake and have time to eat my packed lunch and get back to the car within an hour.

Hatfield Forest is beautiful and has a real sense of history. The National Trust own the land and they say: “ Hatfield Forest is the best surviving example in Britain of an almost complete Royal Hunting Forest. It has seen many owners, from Kings to commoners. No other Forest on earth evokes the atmosphere of a medieval hunting Forest so completely. “

The forest is very popular with families. Some of my favourite visits have been with my parents and their campervan. There is plenty of space in and around the car parks to park a van and set out chairs and tables for a good old-fashioned picnic and perhaps a game of frisbee etc. The central shop, toilet and cafe facilities are very good but usually very busy. I’m not a big fan of queues so I prefer to take my own food.

From the footpath past the shop, you can walk down to the lake, and walk round, past the shell house (see my photos) and into the woods. From here, you can follow the woodland trails, get closer to see ducks and swans, hire a boat, pop into a bird hide or just explore the woods. Some of the trees are ancient, and the National Trust asks you to give these massive trees a wide berth so they can continue to grow without the roots being damaged.

A great place to visit with the family. I would have liked to have spent a bit longer there, but today I just enjoyed getting out into the woods, taking a few photos and sitting down by the lake to eat my sandwich and talk to the ducks :)
