As someone who doesn’t knit or crochet much with normal-weight yarn (I do a lot of lace crochet with thread), I find it really interesting how there are two prominent and completely different views on what the best yarn type is.
There’s the people who love wool. You gotta love wool. It’s waterproof, it’s wonderful, it’s from a sheep (usually? I think? Is it called something else if it’s from other animals? Alpaca wool is a thing, right?). You can also easily spin and dye wool yourself, making it all the more wonderful and sustainable. Why have plastic yarn if you can make it from sheep hair? Sheep will always have hair to give.
And then, there’s the people who love synthetics. Why not? They make wonderful socks, and they’re decently sturdy. They can even be stretchy, too! With synthetics, you can get so many different vibrant colours, and the yarn can be uncannily uniform. Also, who has the time to hand wash everything nowadays? You can just toss it in the washing machine, if it’s synthetic. Why would you want expensive and potentially scratchy wool?
Alas, this is just what I’ve heard, for I sit in the middle with my piles of mercerized cotton thread.
(A little disclaimer on synthetics: they’re all different. This is not a care guide, please don’t destroy your socks)

I have a lot of brown yarn around because I always think it’ll work well in something or I’ll use it in colorwork (I almost never do colorwork), but it’s actually kind of nice here.

I ran out of yarn for the shawl I was knitting, went to the store to see that the price for that particular yarn had gone up, came back home and now I'm trying to DIY stretch the shawl
by which I mean I wet the fabric in warm water, hanged it on both ends and placed dumbells in the middle. will report on the progress

i dont know if i ever mentioned on here that ive been learning how to loom knit. very slowly, as with all things, bc i tend to put things down and leave them unfinished for months and years
but tonight i finally finished my very first scarf!!!! it took over a year of real time, but around 21 cumulative hours. heres some progress pics:

i didnt really have a plan for how long i wanted it to be, i just kept going until i reached the end of the skeins. it ended up being 42 inches long- but its also very stretchy!
since starting this thing, i have found more looms like this at the thrift store and accumulated a nice little pile of yarn for myself, but i havent begun a second project yet bc im deciding what i want to learn next. probably how to switch up colors and patterns in the middle of a project. so ill see u in 2026 for the results of that 😆

Not just when you're done with it.
As the word "microplastics" seeps further into our lexicon, more studies are being conducted about it. This [paper] from Nature shows how washing your clothes contributes to the contamination. I wanted to include a recent study about how general wear of a garment throughout the day also sheds microplastics, but was unable to locate it again, but here's an [article] that references that result. It is reasonable to conclude, though, that if the simple agitation of a washing machine wears at the plastic synthetic fibers, the same thing is also happening throughout the day as you wear it.
From the article, "Microplastic pollution caused by washing processes of synthetic textiles was discovered to be one of the main sources of primary microplastics"

well i still have to take a break bc the knitting machine started screaming while going in one direction. oiled it. still screaming. so it probably is static? i dont know. but i got like 200 rows of the new half-size version of the blanket which is still way more than the ribber was letting me do, i was only getting like 30 carriage passes (15 rows) before the ribber would lock up.
again my machine is fairly fuzz-free and well oiled. sponge bar is fine. its gotta be static. somehow.
