Searching for new swimwear and man. Being fat and gender non-conforming really fucking sucks sometimes.

It is deeply frustrating how no clothing is made with me in mind. Plus size clothing is already extremely difficult to shop for, and so much of it is so aggressively gendered, bc fat folks are expected to hyperperform gender to make up for their fatness if they want to be treated like human beings, and are degendered and depersoned otherwise. The double whammy of being fat + gnc makes me feel completely invisible. Nothing fucking fits me.

I’ve never had a pair of swim trunks that have enough room for my ass and thighs or are the right size for my hips and waist. I always have to compromise somewhere. Bc men’s clothing manufacturers don’t make clothes with bodies like mine in mind.

The last time I bought a swim top was two summers ago at a boardwalk shop when I forgot my bathing suit at home. I got the biggest size they had in the store and it was still too small. The cups didn’t have enough space for me, and the underwire wasn’t broad enough. And my choices were either that or not going swimming at all, and god damn it, I want to go swimming in the ocean with my friends. So I wore it and was uncomfortable the whole time.

I got so excited when I saw @giantffa’s recent post about plus size swimwear, but the only options they have for swim tops are string bikinis. They just rest along the fold between the models’ boobs and belly, and don’t actually provide any support. Granted, I haven’t tried this brand, but in my experience, string bikinis give you terrible back & shoulder pain if you tie them tight enough to not instantly fall off your body as soon as you get in the water.

I’m sorry, but I’m just not looking to wear fabric scraps only suitable for lounging by a pool, not even for getting in it. I want to swim in the ocean! With waves! And splash my friends and play chicken without having to worry about a wardrobe malfunction! I want to go surfing and boogie boarding! And I can’t!! Because nothing fits both my style and my body!!

Maybe that’s entitled and I should shut up and get the stupid black one piece with ruffles, but fuck, am I not entitled to wear clothes that I feel good in? I keep flirting w the idea of resin and going back to "I wanna make dice" but no. just. no no no. I do want to make dice but It's not happening. Every time I start to think about it again I see some humbling shit about microplastics and suddenly desperately want to repent my sins and never touch plastic again.

I will use the rest of the resin jugs I have now and then I Might sometimes use UV resin as an accent on other artwork, or occasionally cast specific pieces. but I'm retiring the whole idea of Being A Resin Artist. It's cool and fun and I can't fucking keep doing it.

anytime I have to throw away something that didn't turn out, any time I have to use the Dremel or sand down the edges of a new piece, it makes me absolutely sick to my soul what I'm doing. Like I actually honest to god cannot live with myself as a fucking plastics manufacturer. I can't do it. I live on the shores of Lake Michigan and every time I rinse off a sanded down piece of resin im literally dumping plastic directly into that lake. That's disgusting. That goes against everything I've ever fucking believed since I was a tiny little child.

I still can't bring myself to call art resin "evil" on par with industrial plastics manufacturers, but every day I look at how many things around me are already made of plastic and aren't broken down yet- packaging. the handles on brushes. the handles on drawers. phone cases. shoes, tires, clothing- and I think about how much microplastic is already in our fucking bodies, and in the bodies of newborn babies, and in the bodies of fish in the sea, and in the rain. and then I think about how much more is out there waiting to break down, and I wonder, is the plastic in the ecosystem now just the tip of the iceberg? Even if we stopped using plastic globally tomorrow, how much more is still out there, in storage, unused in the basements and closets of our homes-- or currently in use!!-- patiently waiting to turn into microplastics hundreds of years down the line?

and then I look at the shit I'm making with resin and sure it's cool. it's very nice stuff. but absolutely none of it was fucking worth contributing to that. None of it. Not for a moment.

Yes, there are certain types of art you can only make with resin. It has a really cool effect on anything you put into it. It's super useful as a sealant. And for some things, plastic is the ONLY substance we can use for that item. Some things NEED that kind of packaging- notably medical supplies- but there's plenty of certain artwork you couldn't make without plastic, too. I hate the idea of a world without sopopomo's resin sculptures. Like, this is some of the coolest shit known to man, LOOK AT IT??? Im also a fan of those big log-resin tables, and like, those surf boards like rusted indigo does. I wouldn't dream of asking artists like this to stop using this medium, especially when they've clearly mastered it.

But your choice of material does end up saying something in the end. Thinking about the source of your materials and inspiration is part of the artistic process, but I really don't see any other resin artists talking about this... (Probably bc they stopped being resin artists if they felt this way, ig?) I mean I've seen some talk about the health hazards for YOU, because resin is also a freaky scary substance to fuck up with and it can burn your skin and give you lung issues and shit, in addition to being THE most harshly unforgiving art medium I've ever encountered.

But it kinda makes me feel insane? To be the only one wondering about this? Like the art you can make with resin is so beautiful, but it comes at SUCH a steep and ugly cost- and not just to your own health but to the environment and people and animals directly around you (you really need to have proper ventilation and full PPE to work with resin. and even cured resin, though nontoxic, can hurt you. Ever gotten a paper cut from freshly-cast plastic? It fucking SUCKS).

And it's so contradictory to me?? bc so many resin artists market themselves as like these witchy, down to earth, inspired-by-nature type of people, who are selling art to the same crowd. Myself included! There is enormous irony in saying "I love nature :)" and then encasing it in a vacuum sealed toxic plastic tomb. This was not lost on me personally, but I seem to be the only one who wants to like. Talk about it. Or address it as part of my artists statement, even. I feel crazy for it!!!! :/ I'm literally not even saying we should stop using resin as an art medium. I am licherally about to go pour some lmfao. I'm just asking like. What does it say about you as an artist-- what statement are you making with your art-- if that contradiction itself is the very approach? I don't know. I don't have an answer to that question and personally that makes me wanna back off, that's all I'm saying.

Like it's not really a moral judgement on other resin artists. I'm not saying all resin artists should want to quit. I know that EVEN COMBINED, all the individual resin artists in the world couldnt produce more trash than Nestle if we tried. this is about me, not about you.

It's just, after my friends supported me SO much in opening my Etsy shop, there's understandably a lot of questions about why I stopped posting/listing shit. it was admittedly going very well.

Like nobody else has to consider that if they don't want to. But that stuff matters to me. And it's worth so much more to me than a bunch of plastic keychains and shit that won't even sell for enough to buy me a week's worth of groceries.

From corporate manufactures who didn't care about regulations? What about all the uncured liquid components that never got disposed of properly! It was cheeky, and more about my skill level with resin than anything else, but the more I thought about it, the more it was eerily on the nose.

But on that note, Ive actually super enjoyed making the journals and it's inspired me to get back into papermaking and bookbinding, so I think maybe I'll keep doing journals even after I put away the resin for good. We'll see. I dislike the idea of giving up resin tbh but the alternative seems much much worse.

So I watched this whole video (Amy Parris, Stranger Things costume designer breaking down the costuming of season 4. Which by the way, is so fascinating and you should give it a watch if you have time.)

And I’m sure this has all been pointed out by Bylers before, but it’s just SO TELLING, the very deliberate choices for El’s and Mike’s airport/rink-o-mania outfits.

Here’s what she had to say about El’s wardrobe:

“It felt important to make her feel mismatched, because she's trying to figure out who she is in this new space. You know, being in California, let alone being in a new high school, you're trying to fit in and so you definitely try different outfits, you try different friend groups, you try different things to see where you fit. And so it was important to show that she'd have pieces that might have been hand-me-downs from Joyce, might have been borrowed from Will, maybe even hand-me-downs from Jonathan, and she doesn't have Max there either so she may have some leftover pieces from the mall like the milkshake dress, but she doesn't know that it's weird to pair it with Will's old shirt, you know? So it was important that even in the frame with Will, she'd kind of look like she was wearing his clothes, but then also throw a dress on it that's like, “Well, this goes, right?””

Why was it so important to show that in the frame with Will (and Mike) that it looks like she’s wearing Will’s clothes? That Mike’s 1st love interest is literally wearing the clothing of his 2nd love interest, only with a dress thrown on top that completely clashes with it, as she’s unaware how the two pieces don’t fit together?

That El’s trying to figure out her place in the world, in school, in society, in friendships, in her new family...And a lot of the stuff is hand-me-downs that were worn/loved by someone else first, that don’t necessarily match with the person she started discovering at the mall in s3 (when she got to decide what SHE likes for the first time.)

Huh? Why is all of that so important for the audience to pick up on? What is it telegraphing to us about the individual character arcs and the love triangle?

And then, here’s what Amy Parris says about Mike’s wardrobe:

[clip of Argyle tag-checking Mike plays first] Argyle: “Oh, no, no, no. No, it's a shitty knock-off, yeah.” “So Mike Wheeler's outfit was written into the script that way, and it was written that Argyle would go, "Oh, hey, cool shirt." So we knew we wanted something that felt like an outfit maybe he would have bought at the airport before he got there. So it's kind of hokey, you know? It says "Surf" on the back and there's surfboards, and it's bright, it's not a color that Mike normally wears. And he would have accessorized it with a hat, and sunglasses with Croakies, knowing he was gonna be outside in the sun. He wears flip-flops. And the outfit was actually manufactured by Quiksilver. We had a collaboration with them, which was really helpful, because during pandemic we couldn't make clothes fast enough. We had made two colorways, we had made orange and teal, and he's worn teal before, so it felt like orange was the best color that was different from his closet, that felt like he was trying to make it work in California.”

We’ve beaten the “Mike dressing up in a shitty knock-off in California as he’s putting on an act of a picture perfect happy relationship with El” analysis into the ground by now, but it’s just that....it’s literally CONFIRMED by the costume designer that this was the intention.

And the line “he was trying to make it work in California” is so blatant it’s astounding. You don’t say “trying to make it work” about relationships that are going well.

But also, the fact that they showed pictures of Mike in his teal shirt on screen while she described this made me consider the contrast between the two outfits and situations. While he’s “trying to make it work” with El, he’s dressing unlike himself, whereas when El has gone to the NINA project and Mike is alone with Will again, he’s wearing a color that’s more like himself. He can be himself around Will instead of pretending to be something else.

(This is why I also believe that the pocket pointing to Will in most scenes was so intentional, because everything else about the costume design on this show is, and they don’t just add details like that and have it mean nothing. If you watch the full video, there are so many specifics in each character’s outfits that prove EVERYTHING you see is so meticulously designed and intentional.)
