jon: woah, damian you draw? can i see?
damian: no, a simple-minded fool such as yourself could never grasp the nuanced vision of my artistic endeavors.
jon: pleaseeeeee? i'm sure whatever it is it's great!
damian: ... fine.
jon holding a sketchbook with damian's warrior cat fursona: oh! wow... nerdy - i mean, so cool dami!
damian, proud of himself: his name is shadowfang!

*Some self enlightenment cultists broadcasting themselves all over Gotham*: You're free now! Free to express yourself!
*Wonder!reader shaking Jon*: Oh, no. The last thing we want is Damian expressing himself. WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING!!

Reapproaching Supersonic Air Travel
Tumblr media
Before the Concorde even began regular flights, protests over its sound levels caused the U.S. and many other countries to ban overland commercial supersonic flight. Those restrictions have stood for fifty years. (Image credit: NASA; via Physics Today) Read the full article

I can't stop thinking about how does between even work in Dragonriders of Pern. Like, it's a completely empty void, with no air, no light, no sound, and extremely cold. But how cold? Is it at absolute zero? Luckily the absence of air would protect you from freezing immediately, but still. Also, if there is no air, shouldn't the atmospheric pressure between be drastically different from that on Pern? The human body can survive in vacuum for minutes and remain conscious for about 10 seconds, but riders should suffer some effects, no? And how does going between even work, is it like a portal or do you get moved atom by atom Star Trek style? How does it affect the world around you, do you leave empty space where you left? (@ranticore went that route in their fic I think). Shouldn't going between cause noise?
Just. How does that thing work

I recently learned about this company called Boom Supersonic that's aiming to design a new commercial aircraft that will enter service in 2029. Think of the Concorde, except more modern, running on sustainable jet fuel, and American instead of a joint French-British venture.
I'm cautiously optimistic that there will be some technological breakthrough for commercial flight within my lifetime to cut down on flight durations, but when I talked about this project with my buddy he just deadpanned, "'Boom' is a horrible name for a plane manufacturer." I couldn't really dispute that.

The One-Inch Model Airplane
flickr
The One-Inch Model Airplane by NASA on The Commons Via Flickr: A one-inch scale model of a typical supersonic airplane design is examined before being installed for sonic boom studies in the four foot supersonic tunnel at Langley Research Center of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Purpose of the research is to study pressure fields at large distances from airplanes. Pressure measurements are made in the tunnel up to 50 inches away from the model, simulating altitudes up to 40,000 feet. Through such research, NASA is providing a better general understanding of the sonic boom problems particulary in evaluating the phenomonon as it affects the design of supersonic transports of the future. Just learnt about the Concorde more. I knew a bit and I knew they were cool, BUT HOLY FUCKING FUCK GUYS they were UTTERLY INCREDIBLE! HOLY SHIT!
I didn't know that they were doing test flights after the Air France crash but apparently one of their London to NYC test flights arrived in NYC minutes before the planes hit the Twin Towers in 2001. What a death knell...
To compound even more irony upon it, the source I looked at published 4 years ago, and they made mention of how 2001 basically destroyed the industry overnight, but there is a new supersonic program on the way... well... I can think of another industry-destroying event that took that out... :(

Supersonic Headcanons
Ace never feels clean.
The mental and emotionally abuse left from Trek clings onto him like a bad odor. Constantly trying to clean himself, to rid himself of the sheer disgust and self-loathing Ace has for himself, The gaslighting, the abuse the Trek put him through.
He breaks down in the showers more often than he'd like to admit. Gent is the only who knows.
Who helps Ace back up.
Who holds Ace in his sleep.
If Gent had it his way. He would have killed Trek if he had gotten the chance.

Weekly output: Google Voice vs. RCS, net neutrality and higher education, Russian disinformation, Boom Supersonic, Rivian, This Week In Tech
This weekend featured an event that was last on my calendar when my schedule existed primarily in analog form: the HFStival, revived Saturday at Nats Park. I knew upfront that the venue would represent an immense upgrade over RFK, but I didn’t realize how much I would appreciate seeing the Postal Service play “The District Sleeps Alone Tonight” for what they say is the last time–in the city that…
