Hey there,

While I am surprised that you didn't read Dracula, it got me curious about what vampire media you watch (like for example Castlevania or Hellsing) and where do you get the idea of dhampir being the birth of a hunter clan?

Honestly, I'm just a bit of a lore junkie. I'll look up little tidbits of things or just come across them all the time & when I find something especially interesting to me, it'll basically be superglued into my brain for eternity.

I actually learned about dhampyrs from Albanian lore. My understanding is that dhampyrs are specifically the children of Lugats, which are a type of Albanian vampire that need not be bitten by another. Rather, they are able to essentially resurrect themselves from the dead via their own desires to pursue something that they'd wanted in life. Wanted it to such a degree that they basically say "no" to death.

And I do mean actual resurrection as they are legitimately able to father children.

Anyway, the lore that I read was that these Albanian dhampyrs are specifically able to sense supernatural entities & are said to be destined to kill their Lugat parent. They are also known for increased physicality (strength, speed, ect) & for having dark, wild hair.

So, I just figured that it's an easy way for a hunter family to start.

As for the vampire media I watched.

I'm ashamed to say that one of the first was Twilight, but after that, I also watched Vampire Diaries, the first 3 Books of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (my favorites were Phantom Blood & Battle Tendency, Hamon was just such a cool concept; though, I also liked Stardust Crusade & how Joseph's Stand was more low-key than the others as it complemented his Hamon & allowed it to shine), Supernatural...

I've seen a bit of the Castlevania show & played a bit of a Castlevania game where you can play as Alucard, can't remember which...

I'm trying to remember what else, but it's not really coming to me...

Today: Doctor Who (1963 - )

Happy early 60th anniversary to my favourite TV show! <3

Doctor Who is a British science fiction series that has achieved global cult status. Having started in 1963, it is the longest still-running science fiction show ever: November 2023 marks its 60th anniversary. It is also textually queer, and given the format of it, said queerness can be applied retroactively to episodes that aired decades before it was actually confirmed in canon.

Doctor Who is about an alien time traveller called the Doctor, who left their home planet for mysterious reasons, and is now wandering through time and space in a barely functioning spaceship called the TARDIS. They are accompanied on their adventures by one to three friends at a time, and have a certain tendency to end up in modern day England. The Doctor, as well as their whole species, is canonically genderfluid, and has been played by both male and female actors. They have had canon relationships with people of both the same and different gender than they are, and some of their friends are very queer, too.

Doctor Who has, besides the TV show, a big extended universe that includes, among other interesting queer characters and storylines, the spin-off series Torchwood, which is a more ‘adult’ show about a team of bisexuals fighting aliens.

A lot can, and has been, said about Doctor Who. The three things I am going to leave you with are: The book Queers Dig Time Lords, which is a collection of short essays written by queer fans about their experience with the show. Worth noting, this book is ten years old and missing some of the newer developments. YouTuber Astral Armadillo’s The Queer History of Doctor Who video, where she goes over the history of the show and when the different queer elements turned up. Obviously not all-inclusive, but as an overview very informative. And YouTuber Verilybitchie’s video Commodifying Bi Validation: Loki vs Russell T Davies, about the queer representation in Disney (like their show Loki) versus queer representation by stories made by Russel T. Davies (like Doctor Who and Torchwood). It really did change the way I see RTD’s work.

Queer Media Monday is an action I started to talk about some important and/or interesting parts of our queer heritage, that people, especially young people who are only just beginning to discover the wealth of stories out there, should be aware of. —The choices behind their name.

When doing the current redesign for Daithí I wanted him to fit in with the overall supernatural and fantasy elements of the story, so I knew I was aiming for a non-human route with him.

Aer already had a bunny/hare theme, so I looked for mythological creatures that would align with this and found the Púca; "the Irish Púca (spirit or ghost in Irish language) is a mythological creature capable of shape-shifting into different forms. They often take the appearance of numerous animals, such as horses, goats, cats, dogs, and hares. In some cases, it can also appear in a human form with animal features like ears or a tail." This was perfect as I like giving my non-human characters, mostly human forms, as well as their more monstorous/animal/creature like forms!

So after deciding on that, I scoured through Irish names and their meanings until I found Daithí. "Dáithí or Daithí (Irish pronunciation: [ˈd��ˠaːhiː]; Old Irish: Dathí) is an Irish male given name which means swiftness or nimbleness," and this fit his character well. Aer last name Barlowe has the meanings, "bare hillside," or "barley hill," which fit with his original universe and how aer is the protector of this ancient willow ontol of a giant hill.

So that's how Daithí Barlowe came about, I also enjoy the contrast between having a pretty, airy name compared to his firey and prickly personality!

#so in case someone didn't know: when shows lease the rights to music they sometimes only have them for so long (like ten years etc.) #WHICH MEANS that if a show gets put into syndication/has reruns airing years later #they will SOMETIMES go in and CHANGE THE MUSIC so as not to get sued #so if you watch the early seasons of SPN on Netflix/TV #the original songs will be gone and there will be copyright-free stuff in their place #it's REALLY fucking weird/disorienting because you'll REMEMBER there being a famous song in that scene! but NOPE. IT'S GONE. #and there's some bland weird unknown song in its place #anyway all of this is to say i'm glad i have the first two seasons on this on DVD for when the nostalgic bug bites and i rewatch 'em ( @zombeesknees )

Maru

Is a registered nurse, but is working to become a medicinal and environmental researcher like her father (Professor Demetrius).

Robotics, Electrical engineering and Astronomy are just a few of her hobbies and passions. 

Afraid of getting real piercings, so Sebastian gifted her clip-ons.

Doesn’t trust newer computers, unlike her brother.

She is nearsighted and has astigmatism.

She goes stargazing in hopes of finding signs of extraterrestrial life. Or just to see if she can spot a certain flying robot.

Used to follow her brother Sebastian around a lot when she was very young, but his troublemaking behavior made Maru distance herself. She still cares about him.

Loves helping the farmer with building farming machines.

Loves spending time with her best friend Penny and talking about books and trivia together.

Other than tinkering with gadgets, she also enjoys doing puzzles.

Penny

Could not afford finishing her teaching course in college due to financial troubles.

Saving up money in her tutoring job to become an elementary school teacher.

Her father abandoned them due to feeling ‘trapped’. It happened around fall—so she feels melancholic during that season.

Likes cooking but is a novice at it.

She and Emily do arts and crafts together in the library and or the (fixed) community center. (For the kids and for event decorations.)

She has a slight southern accent.

Elliott and her like to swap book recommendations.

Loves listening to Maru infodumping about her trivia and interests. She teaches them to Jas and Vincent in return.

She likes to do crossword puzzles under the tree near the graveyard.

Abigail

Lost a sports scholarship in university due to injury, so he dropped out. (He took a course in multimedia arts, hence his 7 ♡ event.)

Likes to collect funny printed boxers.

Wears old clothes until they tear apart.

Doesn't bother combing his hair much.

Takes care of the animals when Marnie's not around, and teaches Jas about the ranch while he’s at it. 

Most of his savings are for Jas and Marnie.

Has calloused hands from hard work.

Harvey

Used to be a surgical oncologist. Left this position due to emotional distress.

He used to be in a long term relationship but it ended due to LDR.

Keeps his pencils so sharp it might as well be a weapon.

Isn't very good at taking care of plants, but is learning how to. 

A little clumsy with housework and repairs, but tries to keep tidy.

His favorite pastime with his father was fishing. 

Likes to drink, but can’t hold his liquor at all.

 In his youth, he has gotten some recognition for his published short stories and poetry, but  has yet to make a full length novel.

Commissions and collaborates with Leah on art and ideas for his books.

His piano actually came from Robin's. Sebastian used to own it but preferred playing the synth now.

Sebastian

Is very skillfull at using a knife (for fish and seafood).

He is a lazy genius. 

His Korean name is Seojun. His biological father tried bringing him to his home country when he and Robin divorced, but Sebastian opted to stay with his mother.

He loves cats as much as frogs and bats.

Sleeps very messily. Ends up in weird positions on the bed, with pillows dropped onto the floor.

Loves exploring the mines and wants to join the Adventurer's guild in the future.

Does his (and his friends') piercings.

Has a long deep scar on his left leg due to a rock crab.

The town go-to mechanic, alongside Maru.

He’s jealous of Maru, but doesn’t hate her. Doesn’t know how to express himself, so they end up fighting. He thinks he’s not the best older brother to have.

Insomniac. Needs medication to help sleep, sometimes.

Likes to tease and scare people.

Also gets sunburnt easily—but in return doesn’t get affected by the cold weather as much.

Best billiards player in Stardew.

Alex

Has dyslexia, but is not aware of it (until the farmer points it out).

Likes to help cook with his grandma.

Makes and sells his own icecream.

Childhood friends with Haley, but pretended to be her boyfriend in HS to shield her from men (as per her wishes).

Not only was he a varsity quarterback for gridball, but he was also an ace baseball player.

One of his favorite pastimes is watching the gridball game every Sunday.

Thinking about saving money to go to a vocational college or getting a scholarship. 

Interested in becoming a physical fitness coach if his dreams to go to the league fall through.

Afraid of being vulnerable to people, because he wants to be seen as strong and reliable.

Sam

A popular boy in school. 

Was influenced into loving music due to Sebastian. 

Likes flowers but has severe hay fever.

Has a scar on his eyebrow from a skateboard accident.

Thinks being a submarine captain might be cool as a job (thanks to the night market), but would prefer being in the music industry.

Likes to DJ and compose his own music.

A little forgetful, so his wrists and hands are full of scribbles and rubber bands as reminders.

Likes cactuses and the flowers that bloom from it (and especially loves cactus fruit).

Him and Alex both like to collect branded sports shoes, and talk about it together sometimes.

Dc x Dp Prompt #3: Of Apples and Academic Frenemies

Au where Jason and Danny are attending the same college course on mythology and classical literature and they are always getting into debates about the depictions of the characters and the historical context of stories and stuff bc the both have a different exposure to the myths. Like Jason knows literal demigods and Amazons but Danny knows Pandora and the Greek myth related ghosts plus time travel from Clockwork and the infi-map. The debates can get heated at times but the respect each others intellectual takes.

This creates a peculiar situation where everyone in the class thinks they are academic rivals who hate each other (except for the few with their shipping goggles on and sense the homoerotic tension underlying their debates) and are deeply invested in watching them interact like their own personal drama even thought at this point in time they are at best friendly acquaintances and at worst annoying classmates.

Jason rants to his family about his debate partner/rival bc he’s happy to have some who will talk to him ad-nauseam abt this stuff but also bc he wants to complain about how Danny's a “smart but annoying little twink who’s got some real audacity”. And while the batfam is happy that Jason is experiencing some normal life things like an academic frenemy they’d love to stop hearing about this guy's “smug fucking smirk” and the “annoying gleam in his eyes". They are worried that Jason will snap and beat this guy up for being too annoying. Well, except Tim who thinks Jason would rather make out with this guy than debate with him.

One day the course decides to do a big themed party/fundraiser to save up for a class trip to an excavation site of some temple ruins or something. Both of them volunteer for the organizing committee bc of the offered extra credit. This encourages the two of them to start seeing each other more and to hang out outside of their classes so the can work on event planning. Over time they actually become pretty good friends (Danny's presence filters Jason's toxic ecto and cures pit rage due to increased exposure. It was happening anyways as classmates but the close proximity sped up the process) and Jason and Danny develop mutual crushes on each other.

For the event they do, like an Olympic games style format and have people sign up in teams for events a couple of weeks beforehand. Anyone in any sort of classical/mythology related course can join and they opened the event for public spectating. They have a few traditional events like a foot race, long jump and chariot race. But the also have some silly ones like Medusa's Snakes, where they shove their faces into bowls of whipped cream and fish out gummy worms, Pandora's Amphora, where they stick there hands into a box/jar of mystery contents (grapes, slime, a live animal like rats or kittens, a bunch of glitter, soda, etc.) and whoever keeps their hand in the longest wins, and Gladiator Fights, where they try to knock each other into a foam pit with those foam and rubber jousting sticks and the such.

Neither Danny, nor Jason want to participate for fear of their physical/supernatural abilities being discovered so the both get talked into doing the emceeing and commentary for the events. They make a really good duo, snarking and bantering with each other, playing off each other's energy and providing fun commentary to the events. Everyone, including the batfam who came to spectate, is a bit baffled by how well they are getting along bc last they checked these two were rivals of a sort, mildly annoying at best and actively antagonistic at worst. However, they really seem to be enjoying themselves.

The last event of the day is a trivia contest, which they both decide to take part in and let someone else take over the emceeing. The final winning trivia question is "what trope was falsely understood as a marriage proposal or declaration of love by misinformed media, that was actually closer to a ploy of seduction and indication of sexual desire according to Greek texts" and the both ring in at the same time to say "tossing an apple to someone" and an tie for the win. They both go up on stage to receive the prize (idk a gift card or smth) and shake hands before walking away in opposite directions.

Then suddenly Danny calls out to Jason just before he leaves the stage and chucks an apple he seemingly produced out of nowhere at him. The apple has a note with the time and date of a dinner reservation on it and when Jason looks back up at Danny he see the slightly flushed boy tentatively smiling at him.

" What do ya say Jase? Will you go out with me?"

And instead of replying Jason just straight up kisses him in front of everyone. Everyone else is gobsmacked by this whole turn of events except Tim who's cackling his head off, screaming "I FUCKING KNEW IT". When the two of them break apart they grin at each other widely and Jason drags Danny of the stage presumably to go make out somewhere.
