here, we get tom telling greg, “you have to stick to cyd like a limpet, okay?”

a limpet is a marine mollusk that attaches itself firmly to rocks, eating algae and other things off the surface. so, expectedly, you’re like, “oh. just another leech/parasite metaphor for greg in the bag.” tom’s telling greg to latch on to cyd, since he won’t be his protector anymore. he can’t be. he lost his “in” aka logan.

BUT what’s interesting about limpets is this. limpets move around over multiple rocks when the tide comes in, but always return to their “favorite spot” on one particular rock when the tide goes out, following the trail they left behind.

what’s more is that this spot on the rock has actually been worn by the edges of the shell of the limpet until a “scar” in the rock is formed. the scarred spot on the rock where the limpet returns to fits the shape of their shell exactly. it is this “home scar” (real terminology btw), this patch of familiarity on the same rock, that keeps the limpet alive, letting in oxygen while trapping seawater to keep the limpet from dying out when the tide goes out.

so, yes, tom is using a figure of speech here. but, in the circumstance in which greg is deemed a limpet, it’s impossible not to consider the obvious. tom is greg’s rock, on the surface of which greg has crafted a “home scar,” a familiar spot worn over time where he knows he can return. where he has to return in order to live, because while the other rocks might often him sustenance, they cannot protect him when the tide goes out like tom can. tom is his home.
