#ok but fr marking undergrad essays is such a rollercoaster#i gave two very high marks today and was genuinely impressed and then the next three i marked were practically incoherent#one just copy and pasted their intro instead of writing a conclusion. like it's verbatim the same paragraph#i dont mark down for minor grammar and syntax errors because there's a high rate of ESL students...#... but some of the papers from native english speakers have me more concerned about functional illiteracy than I've ever been#these are 19-20yos in a humanities field at a top university! even the highest scoring essay had basic basic grammar errors and vocab misuse#at least i could tell what the student was trying to say there but some of the others...#if your punctuation and spelling and syntax are all so bad that i literally cant tell what you're trying to say there is a serious problem#even setting aside how many errors like these there were there's the flip side of the issue: actually writing an essay#the last one i marked yesterday had no structure or thesis or secondary sources#everything between the intro and conclusion was the same claim phrased in different ways with some irrelevant non sequitur quotes thrown in#no analysis other than the words 'analysis of this shows' which is *gasp* not a substitute for analysis#OH AND OMG#one made a direct claim about a figure's political stance and attached a footnote. i went to see what the student's source was.#the footnote literally said something like 'i know i should have a source here but it's only context and i don't want to waste my word count#like what???? do you think claims about relevant context don't need evidence??? and the audacity to not give a citation...#... and claim it's because it would take too many words away from your main argument??#just providing the actual citation for the claim would have been 3-5 words max but the footnote about not having room was 30 words#kid do you think i can't tell that you dont have that citation? do you think anyone's buying that you didn't include it to save space?#it's the very first footnote and most of the others are full-length bibliography entries jammed into the footnotes (which we don't require)#so either you were 'worried about space' at the first footnote then changed your mind as you wasted 250 words on unnecessary formatting#or you were over the word limit and were like 'gotta cut something!' and the only footnote you 'simplified for space' was a short basic one#^assuming i believed you. which i dont. because why would you think that would fool anyone.#i still have half the essays left. im tired and so disappointed in how little we're told we should expect from them

one of my fave things about teaching is that I’m NOT a counselor and I don’t have to get into the weeds with a student but also I’m part of their life every day and i see when they’re struggling and I can ask how them how they’re doing and make sure that they know I see them on a steady, daily basis and it will be healing for both of us
#I teach a student who hit a wall a few weeks ago and just refused to go to school and was just all around struggling with his mental health#and this is not a kid who wants to talk to me about it or would even know how and I also know he has people where he can#But I’ve just tried to make sure that There’s a little extra contact and a few more questions and just a little bit more#and obviously I am not the cause of his doing better but overall I know that it helps#while still being such a subtle and ordinary human exchange that doesn’t force either of us to go to extreme lengths#like man I really LOVE that space and living in it#and just being a (hopefully) stable place for the kids to be seen in a small but consistent way#teaching tag#something about holding them in the safety of manners while also modeling what that looks like for them#it’s so gratifying to me and it helps me too!#like yes we should greet each other! We should ask how we’re doing! we should exchange pleasantries#and it’s important to me that that happens without getting personal sometimes or overly involved#pleasantries don’t have to be cold things and you can be seen and validated by a momentary kind glance as much as by someone digging#into your soul#it can be light and life-giving at the same time#it can be fun!#I’m sorry I’m rambling and over-saying this but it’s Saturday#!!!!!!

why do you work with teenagers if you don’t like them?
Because it's not like that at all! I LOVE my students regardless of how they act or whatever shitty opinions they might have. These kids mean so much to me, even the ones that are barely 18 and think they have the world figured out so they test my patience every other day. It's great to watch them figure out who they are and slowly get out of that self-centered mindset that all teenagers have. It's just basic developmental psychology. When you're a teenager you're in your own head figuring out who you are and so you have this narrow view of everything around you. And so it's awesome watching them go out into the world and figure that out too. Teenagers, awful as they are sometimes, are amazing. Am I frustrated with them today? Absolutely. But the days where they aren't awful are fantastic.

So I’m still in my old IGCSE English classroom despite the fact that another teacher’s taken over
The class with students who were just. Kind of a nightmare, I was struggling to get them to work, but we had started to improve towards the end of the year and the beginning of this school year
I felt a bit good about that, like okay they clearly didn’t want to be there and didn’t want to do the work but I finally got through to them a little to get them to do a bit of homework, and to pay attention in class more
Anyway, the first week of the new teacher doing it by herself, it seems she has managed to get them both to submit full essays on time in the classroom
…. And I am left wondering if I’m just. Really incompetent as a teacher.

i don't think i'll ever get over how people treat kids that aren't good in school as worthless no matter what. "oh it can't be that bad" my guy idk how to tell you this but the last time i went to a normal high school the principal called me into his office to brag about how he failed me in all of my classes before the semester was even finished & i should quit while i'm ahead cuz i'm too stupid ("officially" diagnosed as such by a school counselor & a psychiatrist!!) to succeed. & this is considered normal

my therapy is failing
#this is a joke#i told them that other people are intimidated the way mortals are intimidated to angels as a hyperbole#they knew it was a hyperbole but it did make for some funny jokes#they also said that its weird that a student is doing a theraphy thing#that usually when its a theraphy they get into this own world of theirs and the therapist feels like this sub human person#you pour your heart into#but not really a friend#or even a person#they used the world subhuman and above society type of people and i feel thats interesting#and i know that thats a feeling a lot of my other friends have to their therapist#that half the job is trying to get them to listen to you like youre a person#and theyre more of an obstacle they try and over come for support rather then a person they feel comforted and secure with#and i do acknowledge that good therapist probably treat their clients like people and not traumatized characters#but i can see how after like 4 people in a row you start seeing them as just sadness oozing blobs you need to help somehow#its an interesting thing about theraphy that i didnt think about till now tho so im glad they pointed out how this was weird for them#because i was weirded out when my teacher came to me and ripped out my worries and it was funny to me because he was right#and now i kinda see why#because a therapist isnt a person to the clients either sometimes#they help you with your problems that you sometimes forget theyre human and have issues too#interesting interesting#will keep this in mind when i get into my profession#definitely will avoid therapist

#I've spent the past week organizing in the play's wake - sorting and laundering huge numbers of costumes#some to return to those they belong to and some to come home to my costume storage room which had become chaotic over the last few#months#so a complete spring cleaning for the storage room became part of my task list too. Now the play's been over for a week#and the emails are starting to come in from admin about next year. As some of you know I did a lot of discernment this semester#about what next year should look like and I have decided a mix of continuity is best. I won't be working for my 'main' schoolboard anymore#but I will continue to teach and direct for the one program in the city (the one I did the play for) and possibly with a new home school#enrichment program that may go ahead this year if there are sufficient numbers. Otherwise I am going to spend a semester#tutoring and running workshops f I can get it off the ground. Then we'll see.#Anyway - admin wants me to get new syllabi in to them within a month's time so my thoughts are all in that direction!#I get to teach 19th/20th century Canadian history to the middle schoolers and Late Antique/Medieval Church History to the high schoolers!#Also direct another play and do a humanities course centred around an epic in the spring (the last couple of years we've done Iliad and#Odyssey - they want Aeneid this year but I am trying to talk them into another option. The Aeneid is valuable but I am not sure it's the#time or place with this group of students. The result of all this is that I am spending far too much time doing Internet research for ideas#and then taking breaks on tumblr - which isn't good for my eyes or mental health. What with the play and end of term#I fear I've been out of the reading habit. I'm still hyperfixating on the Book of Romans so there's that at least#but I lost the novel I was in the middle of and am not feeling so motivating with out books. It's a proper reading slump! I need a kickstar#of sorts. Feel free to yell at me that I should pick up a book!

i just think that as a chemistry major i shouldn't be forced to take biology classes that expect me to memorize the everything to pass. i need some kind of "biology for chemistry majors" where they emphasize the techniques a living thing has at its disposal to remain at homeostasis and then look at how all these parts come together to form a complex living organism undergoing constant holistic processes to remain at equilibrium. i don't need to know what a golgi apparatus is called i just need to know how it serves its function in the complex process of transforming A into B
#had to google golgi apparatus just now to know what it does (process lipids n protiens apparently) i haven't been in a bio class since 2016#my classmates in o chem would usually conplain to me abt the bio classes forcing them to memorize a bunch of#species that fall under certain taxonomic classifications bc their specificities Would show up on the exam#n i'm just like. that is a horror show. why do i need to be able to id 36 types of mollusks.#i'm probably Also like this bc i haven't taken a bio class since 2016 unless you count high school physiology then 2018#the worm speaks#my thoughts on academia are pretty much always 'this sucks please let me test into the very specific credentials i want'#bc academia tends to assume that the things i wanna research are the things i wanna teach but that is actually untrue#mostly bc my fave parts of chemistry are the very foundational things n what i like abt teaching it is that you have to balance#accuracy with generality so that new students don't get totally lost in the details of it all or spend too much time focused on a niche#my interest in discussing w/experts mostly extends out to 'okay tell me the new findings. ooo cool i'll incorporate that'#'good luck with your problem tho' no interest in helping out with specifics. only interested in being able to communicate knowledge#the stuff i'd have more interest in discussing and researching lie more in the arts. i do love discussing a good symbolism#probably bc i can also accept that there's never really one exact answer! like what if i do a stem research and then im just Wrong.#art and the human condition on the other hand!! let's go let us gather the Contexts and then Discuss!!!

#i am. in utter disbelief at some of the teachers' view on ai at my art school#just accepting it as if nothing. One of them showed us a#video of how ai was changing the world and stuff like “it just helps people who cant draw to express their ideas”. But where is the humanity#in that???? Art is one of the most beautiful way humans can express themselves and you're just letting a machine do it?? The other day we#had a collage assignment were we had to create a scene for a newspaper article#and there was a student who instead of manually searching#for pictures and modifying them#simply used the generative ai thingy in photoshop.
