Thoughts on the Stray Kids ATE Album

Wanted to just randomly put my thoughts and feelings regarding each song in the album because this is my first comeback with SKZ

Chk Chk Boom - Holy shit. This was the song I was looking forward to the most, and it did not fucking disappoint. As a Mexican Stay, just hearing them sing a little Spanish was everything to me. But what I loved most was Changbin’s flow. Idk it’s different from what I am used to hearing from him, but I enjoyed his parts the most. And the MV? I knew that Ryan Reynolds is a huge fan of SKZ, with Hugh Jackman being a fellow Aussie. I loved their cameo in the MV, and I bet they had fun filming it as well (Changbin could not keep it together and broke out in a smile when Ryan was speaking towards the end). As of now, have probably replayed the song more than 10 times due to it being so fucking good.

Mountains - This one I feel is going to take the longest for me to have it be up there as one of my favs. Not saying that it’s bad, but I don’t see myself going back to that song specifically (no hate please). I don’t have as much to talk about this one, but let’s see if my opinion changes in the future once I continue listening to it a few more times.

JJAM - I was moving to this one specifically. Well, I was moving to the whole song. The “peanut butter jelly time” line goes hard ngl (bonus mention of the “I know, you know, Lee Know). I love whenever Changbin and Han go back and forth with their raps. Idk what else to say except that this is definitely a no-skip for me.

I Like It - This song is right after Chk Chk Boom for me. Seungmin’s intro?? Hooked me right away. But damn once you read the lyrics? Damn. But that really is the reality of love for some people. The falsetto of Seungmin, I.N, Lee Know, and Chan’s voices before the chorus? Fuck yes. This is another song that is on repeat for me.

Runners - Chan and Hyunjin are just ugh. Their vocal delivery? Yes. And Seungmin killed it in this song. This is not to say that I am ignoring Felix, because damn. I thought I would get used to his deep voice, but there are still times I would get caught off guard. I.N’s voice continues to be absolutely heavenly to listen to.

Twilight - The song sounds rich, if that makes any sense. I can easily imagine this song playing at an expensive restaurant. I wasn’t sure if the album was going to have a slow song, so I was surprised to hear this one. My music taste is all over the place, but I immediately loved the slowness of this one.

Stray Kids - This one made me emotional. I know I haven’t been a Stay for long (like 2 months now) but it makes me feel happy to see how much they accomplished as a group, and I feel the fans that have been there since the beginning, that feeling is a lot more stronger. After hearing that they still want to continue doing music together (with them renewing their contracts for more years) is something that I am looking forward to in the future. With the callbacks to their older song titles, I’m just happy that they still want to be together. Older fans must be feeling something else right now.

Chk Chk Boom (Festival Version) - I will say, regarding Rockstar, I didn’t quite enjoy the rock version of LaLaLaLa, as I preferred the original much more. But this version of Chk Chk Boom? Both the og and this version are tied. I don’t know which one I prefer tbh. I might prefer the og, but this version is so fucking good I can imagine myself not caring which version gets played.

Hi ~ while watching straykids mvs recently, I noticed Chan always has a role in whatever is going on in it (reaching out to a member being by himself, leading them...) I related this to his leader position in the group, and I wanted to know if you have an opinion about it ? Your analysis are always so good, I'd like to hear you on this, if you're willing to of course :3 I wish you a lovely day ~

hello lovely anon from literal months ago, i’m so sorry it took me so long to respond to you. yes, i have noticed that as well. to be honest, i don’t keep up with the mv storylines and plots, i just enjoy each as they come. however, i do agree with you: the parallelism is striking. so here are my thoughts on chan and his boys:

before chan became the leader of stray kids, he was the maknae of what was to be got7. the math is a little blurry, but chan was probably with them for four or five years. he trained with them, slept with them, ate with them, learned at their sides. as the baby, he must have been doted on relentlessly. they must have adored him. all groups adore their maknae, but i’m sure they really loved chan because he’s just a shy, humble kid who craves approval at his core. 

and then they debuted without him.

who knows why. maybe he wasn’t ready. maybe he was too young. maybe something else happened. regardless, got7 debuted and chan got left behind. he had to watch from the sidelines as the people he thought were going to be his family rose to fame and basked in the limelight. all the meanwhile, he was trapped at the dorm in the relentless cycle of training and training and training. that has got to sting. i think chan probably carried those wounds with him for a very long time. how could he not? that’s the kind of shit that gets right under your skin and festers for years. i imagine it gave him one hell of an inferiority complex, facing a life of being the perpetual trainee. ashamed, betrayed, hurt, angry, alone, chan could have so easily turned bitter. warped, grown twisted and dark and sharp. if he’d fallen down that path, i doubt he’d ever have debuted. he would’ve left or been kicked out eventually, disappeared into the regular world.

instead, he found jisung. changbin. seungmin, hyunjin, jeongin, minho, yongbok. he found these kids with their scraped knees and dirty clothes, big eyes and soft hearts. and that’s the thing about taking care of something smaller than you. it makes you better. it challenges you, changes you, forces you to grow out of yourself. learning to put something else before you makes you a better person. it just does. it’s why people in recovery are encouraged to have plants or dogs. because holding a life in your hands makes you realize how important love and kindness and selflessness really are. 

chan has said this before, but stray kids saved his life. they saved him from stumbling down a very dark and very lonely road. they tumbled into his life, all seven of them, so young and fragile and talented and loving, and chan took them under his wing. raised them as his own. loved them, cherished them, found peace and security in their chaos and passion. they are his life now, his entire reason for existence. same as they owe him everything they have, so chan owes them everything he has. they found him when he needed a family more than anything. when he needed something to hang onto, something to love, something to nourish, something to bind himself to, blood and bone and soul. 

i don’t know if you’ve noticed, but i use two distinct tags whenever i reblog content with chan in it. the first is for chan himself. this is not your destruction bang chan. because once upon a time, chan was poised on the edge of oblivion. and instead, seven scrappy kids fell into his life and bound themselves to him and asked him to raise hell on the edge of some insane prayer of an idea. that’s all stray kids is--a dream. a crazy thought, an idea, an experiment that they’ve forced into being. one they’re making work. this was no accident, remember, because they chose this. they built this with their hands. on purpose, an act of choosing love over destruction.

the other is i will carry you home in my teeth. a reference to a mountain goats song yes, but also chan’s promise to his boys. i will walk through fire for you, i will climb mountains for you, i will cross deserts and oceans and tundras for you. i will bleed for you, die for you, i will give you everything inside me. you are my family and i am yours and there is nothing that can come between us, no force on earth, no god and no king.

so it’s no wonder that he’s always standing at the back. why it’s so imperative to him that no one gets left behind. why he trips over himself to put his kids first, to show them off to the world. look, look at these people. these incredible, wonderful, amazing people who i love more than anything else in the world. and they’re mine, i’m theirs, i will protect them with my life. because they saved him. stray kids saved chan, gave him a life, a reason for living. so all he can do, the only thing he can do, is to give them everything inside him.

Want to go and see SKZ on tour so bad but from what I’ve been seeing on TikTok about the Australia and Singapore ticket sales is that it’s gonna be a bloodbath regarding getting tickets for when they come to the US

Also, am I the only one that thinks the M/V teaser is giving Goosebumps vibes? One thing for sure, is that I am looking forward to the choreography the most
