Steve Shehan - Arrows (Made to Measure Vol.26) - remastered reissue of 1990 album, a percussion-rich Fourth World affair

Born in the US (of a Native American father and a French mother), composer and musician Steve Shehan has travelled around the world, collecting instruments and sounds along the way, making extended stays in Asia, South America and Africa, and initiating long-term collaborations with artists such as the late Tuareg musician Baly Othmani. Steve is also a member of Hadouk Trio (alongside Didier Malherbe -of Gong fame- and Loy Ehrlich). A much-in-demand percussionist, he has collaborated with a host of artists (from Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel and Khaled to Salif Keita, Youssou N’Dour, Rokia Traoré, Carla Bruni, Nitin Sawhney and John McLaughlin). Steve has recorded many albums of his own music, and Arrows -which came out on Crammed's Made To Measure series in 1990- was his first solo record. A mesmerising ambient global journey with jazz overtones, laced with Steve’s own field recordings made in Bali, Turkey, Kenya, Morocco and India, Arrows has elicited comparisons with the work of Jon Hassell and other ‘fourth world’ explorers. Most of Arrows was recorded in Paris by Steve Shehan. The 7 compositions feature him performing on thirty-five instruments (including derbouka, caxixi, afuche, cymbals, glasses, ikembe, sanza, Malaysian, balinese and thai gongs, djembe, angklung, balafon, koto, gender, kendang, terompong, bells, Armenian tar, surdo, keyboards, congas, steel drums, vibes, sticks, cuica, sitar, kodo, udu & hadgini drums, octoban, Baschet structures, sampled sounds, bass, concert piano, electric guitar). Only a couple of guests appeared, including his friend Richard Horowitz on flutes (Steve had participated in the recording of Horowitz & Sussan Deyhim’s Desert Equations album, which is how he & Crammed Discs first met). In The Rock 7/7/1986: David Lee Roth releases his debut full-length solo album, ‘Eat ‘Em and Smile’, featuring Steve Vai on guitar, Billy Shehan on bass and Greg Bissionette on the drums. Time to land on our imaginary island and take a timebreak at the resort hotel ! The idea for this volume was to create a sort of soundtrack for an imaginary retro resort utopia with the opening track from exotica maestro Arthur Lyman being the title theme. It's a volume filled with nostalgia as it tends to be listened as a mental projection from old memories of vacation times, with its (definitely non-tropical) final track by The Caretaker mixed with field recordings being its memory lapse and return to present time...

HILARIO CAMACHO se SUICIDO [para abandonar este MUNDO DE ESTAFADORES como así lo sentia como que los SUEÑOS ERAN DESESPERANZADOS DE QUIEN PERCIBE QUE EL SOL SE ACOBARDA por un HORIZONTE PLANO] con 58 años en 2006 sólo 40 dias antes de publicar su RECOPILATORIO titulado UNA MIRADA DIFERENTE con 2 canciones nuevas :

Hilario Camacho ha decidido abandonar lo que sentía como “un mundo de estafadores”, 40 días antes de la fecha pautada para el lanzamiento de su nuevo disco: ‘Una mirada diferente’.

Sin su presencia parece que tenga otro sentido este trabajo cuidadoso y excelente que recoge 13 piezas relevantes de su prolífica carrera y 2 de nueva creación. Pero esa mirada diferente sobre sus canciones puede y debe dirigirse al sentido de las mismas, a la tristeza, si se quiere, que asoma a menudo en ellas; a los sueños desesperanzados de quien percibe que “el sol se acobarda” por un horizonte plano, aunque, desde un lecho vacío “te escribo mientras espero (…) te espero mientras te sueño”, para recordar, después, a ‘Las amantes perdidas’, “vencidas / que se fueron dolidas / por mi desamor”.

Musicalmente, el disco es una recreación de piezas fundamentales de su repertorio: ‘Madrid amanece’, ‘Los cuatro luceros’, ‘Cuerpo de ola’, ‘Ven aquí’, ‘Sol de invierno’, ‘Taxi’ o ‘La clave secreta’, gracias al atinado esfuerzo de Josep Mas ‘Kitflus’, con sus arreglos, al de músicos como David Palau, Salvador Niebla, Steve Shehan o Roger Blavia, y a la laboriosa producción de Alain Milhaud, quien, tras un período de retiro en los cuarteles de invierno de la edición, recuperaba su apasionada profesión de productor.

Queda aquí un disco póstumo cuyo protagonista se fue sin “Encontrar esa clave secreta que lleva hasta el alma”, tal vez porque prefirió “aceptar” a “dudar”, “creer” a “saber” y sintió la vida, “libertad y condena, amor, tristeza, misterio, belleza y dolor”, al final, como “el precio” de querer cambiar el mundo. Un precio que pagó, inútilmente, antes de tiempo.

Start The Week With Music ...

... from a world in which you are not judged by where you come from, what the color of your skin is or what God, if any, you believe in. There is no room here for hatred or racism, you will find in this world no fascists and no cowardly murderers. It celebrates diversity and asks only that your mind should seek beauty, your heart be caring, and your spirit wide awake.

Here, then, are three musicians who combine musical elements from different traditions to create an original, rich sound full of power and poetry. The influences range from Eastern Europe and the Caucasus Mountains via Western Europe and Northern Africa all the way to the Middle East and beyond.

The members of the Hadouk Trio are Didier Malherbe from France who plays wind instruments, most notably the Doudouk, an Armenian oboe made of apricot wood; French born Tunisian resident Loy Ehrlich on keyboards; and percussionist Steve Shehan, the American son of an Indian father and a French mother.

I am posting an entire album of theirs, called Now. It was originally released in 2002 (Melodie 670392) and is now available from Naïve/Naïve Jazz ND 68530.
