Although extremely popular in America during the hippie movement, tie-dye was not a product of the USA.  It was popularized in the 1960's, but it gained momentum during the Great Depression because it was an affordable way to add color to fading clothing. This artistry is a form of resist-dying, which dates back to at least the sixth century.
The technique blossomed in regions such India, China, Japan, Mexico, Peru, Rome, Greece and Africa, and found its way around the globe as it evolved.  In some cultures, color wasn't simply a form of expression, but a signification of social status.  Speaking of social status...
More than 16 million children live with families with incomes below the federal poverty level.  According to statistics, that is 22%, but let's look at the numbers that comprise that standard.  For a family of four, $23,550 is below the federal poverty level, but in reality, a family needs twice as much as that to sustain, so it’s more like a whopping 45% of all children in the United States that are inflicted with poverty.  For a lot of people, clothes are not on the menu.
Many families depend on the compassion of strangers who choose to donate clothing, rather throw it away.  There are plenty of people who can not afford new clothes -- something that is often taken for granted.
Imagine the joy that a new, vibrant tie-dye shirt would bring to a child in need.  That's what we here at Steezyworks have been imagining, which is why we have some interesting plans for the Spring.  During the last weekend of March (3/27/15 and 3/28/15) we will be hosting a unique event called "Steezy for the Kids".
Come learn some sweet tie-dying techniques and give back to the community, all at the same time!  Our mission is to gather as many kind souls as we can to help us produce as many pieces of tie-dye clothing possible.  For only $20, the founder of Steezyworkz will teach you some tricks of the trade and not only will you be helping create beautiful clothing for children who need it, you will leave with a Steezyworks T-shirt.  Our goal is to create at least 200 pieces of clothing.
We will be donating our clothing to K.I.D.S. Fashion Delivers.  This foundation has been aiding families in need since 1985.  They help provide new products, such as apparel, accessories, shoes, home furnishings, toys, books, school supplies and much more to struggling families.
To help make a positive impact on a child who needs it the most, you can buy a ticket, or donate, at the Steezyworkz Shop.  Please join our event on Facebook and share it with your friends!  Even if you don't consider yourself an artist, tie-dye is a blast!  More importantly, you'd be brightening a child's day with your compassion, and a little love and compassion can brighten anyone's future!
