Okay.

I think I'm too tired to keep spamming Starset.

I need sleep.

But it's been awhile since I hyperfixated on a thing that hard and felt that much sheer JOY about it.

I will say that Brave New World was a hyperspecific instance of hyperfixation that started it tonight... ;P

But I'm going to be reading the novel(s) this weekend.

'S' in parenthesis because I don't know if I'll have time to FINISH both... but I do HAVE both! I'll only be reading them at home because as SOON as ABHotF came out, they stopped selling The Prox Transmissions on their website? So uhh. I may have gotten a collector's item. Thank you, ebay!

Anyways, I'm not carrying them in my bag because they're both paperback because that was The Only Option and also the second novel is SIGNED. So. Nope. Not letting THAT guy get beat up in my day bag.

(Kinda tempted to find a .pdf pirated copy to read for the same reason I burned my Fully Legally Obtained CDs. Just so I wear out the COPY instead of the original in use.... but alas. My eyes get sore reading white-background black-text files anyways and I really strongly do prefer a physical book. And I don't have any kind of kindle-y thing.)

yeah it had grammar and spelling mistakes and had the same issues as prox; where they introduced a ton of characters right when the main plot was getting good. as well as the way some woman were written but idgaf i have been waiting for this book forever so .

A CANON STARSET LESBIAN CHARACTER I NEARLY THREW UP /pos it feels so nice to see a canon lesbian in the lore, and not for sexual fetish purposes but just having a lesbian there with a huge role to the rebellion. did still follow the bury your gay trope but baby steps atp. just seeing her made me feel so warm and happy inside.

yeah aston wise is the architect yeah thats like a huge plot point for his character and i wish i was shocked abt it but that was spoiled to me, not by reddit or tumblr or by people reading the book. no. that part of the book was spoiled by dustin bates himself from the divisions 2019 tour in nyc in 2019 where the intermission video during a rebel show were of rebels saying destroy the architecture destroy the architect aston wise is the architect or smth like that. 5 years ago. that whole thing stuck with me for 5 whole years.

other than that i am addicted to this book i am so heartbroken that we are moving on to prox now and never touching this arc again it breaks my heart but alas.................................

Tag Nine People You Want To Get To Know Better

I was tagged by the lovely @sealriously-sealrious (love the new pic/header! Threw me for a loop first though because... no leaf lol)!

Last song: My Demons by Starset and Bottom of the Pit by The Living Tombstone are in a 2-song playlist... on loop. For about 3 hours now. I easily get stuck on a song or two for days.

Currently watching: "Island" (which doesn't even look like a word to me anymore...?) A horror/fantasy Korean drama with a hot priest and evil trying to destroy the world. My Korean is terrible though so I have to find time to sit and watch.

Currently reading: Just finished reading Cold as Hell by Rhett C. Bruno (a supernatural western that hit ALL the spots - an undead-ish vigilante being used by a higher authority to fix paranormal problems. Think Dresden Files but amazing.) Tonight I moved on to The Luminous Dead by Caitlin Starling because I've heard nothing but rave reviews.

Current obsession: The Magnus Archives. Definitely late to this one but devoured the first 2 seasons in a week. Martin <3 This world needs more horror audio dramas... what do you mean there's a sequel in the works? My prayers are answered!

I think you would really like the Devolution song by Starset. Maybe even Infected. But your blog gives that you'd like Symbiotic. Scratch that you'd probably like the whole album, it's called "Horizons".

I could swear I've heard some of these in the back of video game trailers, and I think they make me type faster, which is wild, because I cannot type fast so it just leads to a lot of spelling mistakes. Anyway, here is my review of the songs you suggested and a few others

Devolution: The music is good but the lyrics are too far back in the mix for me to sing it easily, which is how I usually listen to music. It's also a bit nihilistic, lyrically.

Infected: I like it pretty well, except for the callouts that ground it too much for my liking. It basically has to be about climate change, and I prefer songs that are more broadly applicable. I also can't sing it because I can't do that not-quite screaming style. The rhythm on this one is really good, the lyrics flow very well though, so its a shame it got disqualified by my pet peeves.

Symbiotic: AstarionxTadpole lol Unsurprising you'd figure I'd like this one. I do, though it's not my favourite.

Annihilated Love: I really like this one, thanks for the recommend!

Earthrise: Another close cut, the first verse had me, then it became a series of dubiously executed romantic metaphors... unfortunate.

Otherworldly: The instrumentation is very complex relative to the melody of the lyrics, but it fits really well as a character song for Eric to sing to Elise at the climax of their arc in the first book, so it's a win right there. The voice part itself is very nice, I will very much enjoy singing it. The tie-in to the next song tacked on to the end is going to be annoying tho.

All in all it's much more heavily instrumented music than I usually go for, and some of the lyrics are less rhythmically clean than they could be for the sake of the meaning. My favourite song is "I don't mind" by Particle House, featuring Le June, for context, so a bit different...

REVIEWING A BOOK MADE BY MY FAVORITE ROCK BAND “the prox transmissions”

So i finished this recently, its a hell of a good book, the travel tends to drag out and its a bit jumpy but its a solid 8/10

Now let me tell you why this is the BEST 8/10 IVE EVER READ

The characters are incredible and unique, you can bet your ass im doing fanart of aston wise!

The villains are incredible in their processes and it feels as if they are truly competent.

It does a great job of blending modern times with sci-fi themes.

If you like modern sci-fi and space esque rock music i recommend reading this book and listening to starset

It’s time to absolutely roast review my stats for this year, compare them to last year, and see what Spotify cooked up. Slight warning, this shit is very long and I didn’t realize it until the end so get ready to read lmao.

Genre Sammich

Starting off, we got genres. I listened to 49 different ones this year! While it is a lot, compared to last year, I listened to 57 different genres. I do wonder if that has to do with Spotify swapping different genres around, like what is “pov: indie” lmao. Anyways, my top genres are as follows, presented in a delightful music sandwich.

All of it is not surprising. What is surprising is there’s no “emo”, “rock”, or “punk” anywhere. Because those genres certainly pop up on my best artists.

My Wrapped VS The World

Up next, we have locations…? Haven’t really seen this before, but apparently spotify matches your music tastes with locations with similar tastes. I got Colorado Springs, CO, to which Spotify says “people there are far more likely to be fans of Fall Out Boy, Set It Off, and STARSET”. Interesting to say the least, but can anyone there actually confirm lmao.

No One Is Surprised (Least Of All Me)

Next on the list is song stats, specifically how many songs you’ve listened to this year, AND the one at the top. I listened to 2,606 songs in total, and as Spotify put it “and there was one that *really* connected”. No one is surprised, So Much (For) Stardust stole the title of top song in a landslide victory. With 940 plays in total, that is about 75.7 hours straight. For reference, My Demons, my top song last year, was a measly 112 plays.

No One Is Surprised (Part 2 Electric Boogaloo)

Following Stardust, my Top 5…. Are also all selections from SM(F)S. We got Love From The Other Side, Heartbreak Feels So Good, Hold Me Like A Grudge, and finally, Flu Game to round out the list. I still find it a little funny that FOB took over my heart so much this year. Last year, yeah I was obsessed with STARSET, but I still had a healthy mix of other artists like Caravan Palace and Set It Off. Yet this year it’s a certified Fall Out Boy SWEEEEEP.

WDYM It’s December? 2023 Just Started!

Time goes so fast bruh I swear I just blinked and it’s already over. Speaking of, how much time did I actually spend on Spotify as a whole? Well, according to the stats, I listened for 64,800 minutes this year. Which, is actually pretty much the same as last year, give or take a few thousand minutes. Not going to lie, I thought it would’ve been much higher, breaking into 70,000 or even 80,000. Knowing that number though, doing some quick math, I spent a whole 7% of that time just on ONE song. Just on mfing STARDUST. I’m not ashamed I’m just in awe lmao.

Everyone’s A 0.5% Fan

1,289 Artists this year, and anyone want to guess who’s on top? The joke is getting old, but still, surprising no one, Fall Out Boy, with 17,914 minutes, steals the throne from STARSET (6,521 mins in 2022) in a landslide victory. Putting me in the top 0.005% of fans.

Royal Artist Court

Top 5 Artists are lookin’ real similar to last years ngl. Yet we got more crumbs of info this year compared to others!

Fall Out Boy was pretty low in the charts, up until a sharp spike in March (I wonder why). Staying high all the way through the year.

STARSET coming in at number 2, started the year off really strong before suddenly dropping in March. Then coasting through the year with short waves and spikes every other month or so, but never really regaining ground.

Caravan Palace in number 3, pretty much the same as STARSET in terms of stats, but it really lost ground in August and hasn’t recovered (I’m sorry Caravan Palace I still love you lmao).

Set It Off in number 4, started January really strong, lost traction in February, and stayed dormant until May. Then, sudden spike in June, and coasted throughout the rest of the year reasonably moderately.

Finally, Toby Fox, with the most erratic set of data. Instead of being a steady wave throughout the year, there’s sharp peaks of activity some months, and virtually nothing other months. Notably, peaking around April, sharp spike in May, dead until a huge spike August- September, and another hill in October.

Spotify Watched One (1) Episode Of Yu-Gi-Oh

We’re almost done I swear. We have been presented with a card that represents our listening style. Last year, for example, it was a “Listening Personality” which deduced I was an “Adventurer”. This year, I’ve been presented with a card called “Time Traveler”, which is described as “travel back in time and listen to songs on repeat”. I wonder who the culprit is, cough (sm(f)s with 940 plays), cough. The design is pretty cool ngl, I’d get this as an actual trading card print if available.

Starset puts on one HELLUVA show.

It was an outdoor show, so I could sit down on the grass. I told myself I'd only stand up and dance if they played Brave New World. (Albeit a STRICTLY modified dance because my back/hips can handle swaying side to side, but not my usual bouncing back and forth on my feet and slamming my whole upper body forward with the beat. I experimented yesterday to see what I could do, and leaning forward was a HUGE nope.)

Well, they played Brave New World! And Halo. And DEGENERATE. And My Demons, and TokSik! I stood up for ALL of those. (I saw the effects at the last Immersion show I went to in April, so I didn't mind not being able to see because everyone else around us was standing while I remained seated. I was there this time to take notes after having read the novels and learned the lore, because I only had the very vaguest broadest strokes of knowledge about the Transmissions story in April. And gods, am I glad I came back! So much made SENSE in context of the novels!)

But now I'm sore and holy heck I am gonna be feeling that tomorrow. (I am Officially Old now.)

I took a LOT of notes, I'll share a summary and review once I have a chance!

(Though I forgot to take a sound recording because Dustin's voice, specifically as it sounds live, is EXACTLY what I've always imagined Srentha's singing voice sounds like! Whoops. Too busy crying at Die For You and madly taking notes on the video scenes I guess. Ah well. There will be other demonstrations!)

recently I realised that no-one in She-Ra has a surname. and I know that this is almost definitely because it’s a reboot of an 80s show for marketing toys which only needed one recognisable name, but thinking about it it also can be explained from a worldbuilding standpoint.

consider that everyone has a unique name, often multisyllabic. this implies that for each person, a new name is invented- usually created from descriptors.

as an extension to this, a lot of the princess-side names are descriptive of who the character is now, which could not have been known at birth (like how there’s an archer called Bow). this means that either nominative determinism is in full force, or (more likely) the people choose their names. on the other hand, some Horde names are descriptors which can apply form birth, like Scorpia and Catra. then you have the names which are just names, like Kyle and Rogelio (Roger). not sure what those are, maybe they’re just random noises which stuck.

basically, She-Ra accidentally created an interesting naming convention system wildly different from our own, which I think is quite cool

This can't possibly be in reference to my dinner cause I know I didn't tag about it on Tumblr, but this evening I went into the kitchen - I, a beginner with cooking - and with the unfounded, unearned confidence of a white boy I totally winged sausage gravy after merely glancing at a recipe and thinking I had the vibes down, and I didn't. It was bad. Where did this confidence come from? What white boy possessed me, whispered in my ear that I could do whatever and find immediate success? "Released on September 13th, 2019, DIVISIONS is the third studio album by STARSET. Fronted by Dustin Bates, STARSET is known for their elaborate shows and their detailed, cinematic rock albums. To watch STARSET live is to watch a spectacle of light and sound that leaves you in awe. There is an augmented reality app, aptly titled STARSET, that was first meant to be used during the live concert. This has since been updated to have some functions outside of the concert setting. During the “Immersion: Part One” tour, Bates and his bandmates wore spacesuits. Bates, in fact, has a significant tie to space: he was a teacher at the International Space University Space Study Program at one point, and has solidified his image of being both an extremely imaginative and talented musician and an accomplished scientist..."
