I had done one for favorite characters not too long ago, but I changed it up a little to do for my favorite ships! I'm just curious as to which of my ships my mutuals (or anyone who comes across this) favors most.

I would've liked to add all of my ships, but Tumblr only allows a limited amount of options. So I just went with the ones I tend to share the most about. Here are gifs of the contenders below.

In my attempt to do a spoiler-free review...

If I'm being honest... If I could go back in time... I'd tell myself not to watch this anime, which looks crazy since I was freaking out through most of it

Now it ticked lots of boxes before I went into it, but for it to tick even more when the anime already seemed perfect was incredible. So it ticked an extra three boxes. One of the before I watched it moments being that, I literally had only just made a rant about BL and how that label should be removed from animes and like, y'know, let us be surprised if the main character ends up in a same-sex relationship. Don't spoil it with the BL tag. But I'd made the Banana Fish post a month before that rant. I'd listed the Banana Fish genres, already hyped at it being a shoujo, made by a woman, with the delinquent/crime/psychological genres.

1. And so therefore, I did not go into this knowing that... it would end up being a BL. And anyone that tries to deny it was a BL is actually insane. The author could try and tell me this gay as fuck anime wasn't a BL and I wouldn't believe it (whether she has or not idk). Fucking heart emojis coming outta these fuckers eyes whenever they're in the vicinity of each other. I didn't screenshot the majority of it bc I'd too many screenshots. So yeah, this anime basically... did the exact thing I wanted in my rant. It's honestly the weirdest and most perfect timing. Legit shocked at the gay that happened in an anime not labelled as BL. I'm still not over it

Takahiro Kagami was the key animator. The animation director most known for YGO's signature style. YGO at its most beautiful. The guy who created Joey's chin. The animator they called back to animate DSOD and gave Joey his most perfect look

So I learn just before watching this anime that made me think of Joey in the first place, that Joey's key animator was working on this show? Incredible.

Joey's S!0 VA comes in as our main dudes trainer/mentor, who taught him how to fight and shoot. Like, I been comparing him to Joey the whole time and Joey appears?? What sorcery is this??????

So with the boxes out of the way, I'll list the positives outside of that:

Voice acting was fine, but the MC has risen up the ranks for me and this is my second time hearing him as a main character. Before that he was a side character in animes I barely remember. Actually I just finished Starmyu again and I think he was one of the less memorable characters (ok just checked and yes, also he was a little gay in that, he's always gay that's crazy). But he was fantastic, a scene stealer.

The animation was stunning (as expected). And it being set in New York added so much to that appeal. The action scenes... yes.

And for 24 eps it had a decent pace, I had a few days off so just binged it but took a lot of breaks (even tho it may not look like it lmao).

I had some good ass laughs.

Onto the negatives...

Now... this anime is rated an 8.5 and its very popular.

I rated it a 7.

So I decided on the 8 rating about a third of the way into the anime. It had the potential to be higher but... the anime got sloppy and repetitive. Super repetitive. And it drags, quite a bit. But bc of all the positives, I was like "ah... its going downhill a little but I'll still give it an 8."

Then something happened. And I... just couldn't give it that 8 anymore. What happened infuriated me. There's animes that can do what happened well, and I'll be upset but like, get it. Not in this one. I had to pause and breathe for about 3 mins before pressing play again.

Others may rate this anime low due to how triggering it can get. It didn't trigger me in any way but I can see how it could. The MC goes through a lot. I just wanted to protect him.

But uh, yeah. Due to the thing that happened I'd honestly rather have not watched this show. It kinda erased all the joyous, positive things that happened throughout, in a way. Idk. I need more time to sit on it.

De vuelta al Idol Hell...

Siempre me ha gustado mucho la música, y por esa época dónde comenzaban a resaltar los animes de Idols me enganché bastante a un par de franquicias: Tsukiuta, Shounen Hollywood, ARP backstage pass, Ensemble Stars, B-Project, Idolmaster Side-M, Marginal#4. Donde solo las primeras 4 marcaron realmente un hito en mi vida. Aunque si hablamos de Anime serían solamente las 3 primeras, ya que el anime de Ensemble Stars no lo vi... ¡Me niego a aceptar a Maeno como Hokuto! Nada contra Maeno, amo su trabajo, pero Hosoya era perfecto como Hokuto, por él tomé interés en la franquicia (y con él se fue) ywy </3

Of horse(?) franquicias con grupos masculinos, porque los de niñas no me llaman la atención.

De uta-pri, vi algo pero nunca fui fan, era spam frecuente en mi inicio porque a una amiga le fascinan(hasta el día de hoy). Idolish...¿qué? De las canciones que escuché ninguna me gustó, y por mucho que ame a Kensho el prota se me hace insoportable... Dream Festival es puro cringe xDDD

Menciones honoríficas a Starmyu y A3, que si bien se centran mucho en la música, la historia está enfocada a obras "musicales", ya que en ambos casos los personajes son actores. El único problema con Starmyu es que te saltan con números musicales de la nada, bueno, con el tiempo uno se acostumbra... creo.

Comenzaron a aparecer en yt recomendaciones sobre esta serie, y lo primero que pensé fue: "Wow, amo el diseño de personajes~" y con ese impulso me dispuse a ver el trailer.

4 segundos me robaron la libertad xDD

4 segundos de un diálogo de Nojima fueron suficientes para venderle mi alma a esta historia...

De momento el anime tiene 2 capítulos y, honestamente... las canciones y los bailes de los modelos no terminan de gustarme, PERO NOJIMA OTL

Ok, ahora siendo serios. Si bien el "fuerte" principal de la serie(las canciones y los bailes) no me llama, la historia tiene cierto encanto. Es que... el mundo siendo devastado por el calentamiento global y una potencial revolución de los robots en contra de lo que queda de la raza humana es... yo lo veo completamente posible .w.

Pero a eso debemos sumarle que en lugar de buscar una solución al problema es MUCHO más esencial mantener entretenida a la población humana restante x'DDD También lo veo posible...

Me ha gustado mucho que el personaje por el que le vendí mi alma a esta franquicia tenga esa aura misteriosa, solo falta que al final sea el villano de todas formas y lo siga amando igualmente equis de (?)

(acabo de notar que nunca publiqué esto, pero aprovecho para agregar el otro anime que me llamó la atención)

Ayer comencé a ver UniteUp!, que es netamente una serie de idols, su enfoque es completamente dirigido a ello. Del cómo surgen, sus motivaciones, metas, preocupaciones, etc...

El protagonista, Akira, es un chico promedio, que en primera instancia no tiene mayor interés en el mundo de los idols, pero le gusta cantar. Como un chico cualquiera aspiraba a ser jugador de beisbol en el futuro, pero la trama dijo otra cosa.

Allí es donde entra Kacchan (sí, Kacchan...) su amigo de la infancia, quien al verlo deprimido por no poder perseguir su sueño, lo graba cantando cuando van al karaoke y luego sube videos a internet sin que Akira lo sepa. El mejor amigo del mundo, oh sí...

Kacchan es contactado por una agencia para firmar un contrato como uno de sus futuros talentos~ Sí, Akira se entera en ese momento.

Me gusta mucho la relación que tienen estos dos, es todo lo que debería ser la amistad en realidad. Aunque Kacchan hizo mal en ocultar sus acciones, que nunca fueron para aprovecharse del talento del otro, cuando le explica a Akira este comprende sus razones e incluso se conmueve por ello. Que si bien, el mundo de los idols no era algo que Akira deseara conocer le abre un camino de posibilidades que poco a poco comienzan a parecerle atractivas.

Luego están sus compañeros. Que adoro con todo mi ser (aunque solo he visto hasta el capítulo 2 xD)

Banri, el rubio, es el excéntrico con... trastornos raros de autoestima, pero es bastante adorable y muy honesto cuando habla. Un pequeño rayo de sol~

Chihiro me sorprendió mucho, al principio parece ser el típico chico estoico que prefiere hacer las cosas por su cuenta y no pretende congeniar con otros más de lo necesario, pero resulta que es un chico muy sensato y comprensivo. Aunque sus problemas familiares se notan a leguas... Estoy esperando su historia, donde posiblemente nos hable de un hermano mayor extremadamente exitoso que hace de su existencia un simple grano de polvo en el universo. No importa, yo lo amo <3

In all honesty here’s a lot of muses I want to try. My maybe list is pretty big but either there’s no demand for the character or I see other’s of the character around and don’t want to over step. There’s one or two even I have where it makes me nervous I will run into my toxic af ex. There’s a few where I am nervous I won’t do them the justice that they deserve. Heck adding the rest of the HypMic boys I am nervous about because I feel like I am overstepping a little. Looking at my maybe list a lot of it looks to be low demand. I watch some obscure anime’s sometimes and just fall in love. I have a lot more anime’s on my list too I need to watch.

HIRAGI TSUBASA'S CHARACTER ARC IN STARMYU IS JUST SO AMAZING.

In the first few episodes, we get a sense that this dude is super strict. It's after S1 E06 where we learn about his history with Otori Itsuki.

And, yes, I was balling in S1 E09. You can't tell me that their duet wasn't heartbreaking. YOU CAN'T.

What's interesting is the things you CAN'T find in the anime. For example, in SHOWTIME 9, Hiragi has a solo song titled "uncontrol". I realized it after reading the English translation of the lyrics that the song was about his feelings throughout S1 E09. The fact Otori was about to leave him again and he couldn't do anything to stop it, let alone go after him.

In the drama CDs set between S1 E14 and S2 E01, Otori and Hiragi have a conversation about their respective graduation parties held by their students. They, eventually, get to the topic about Hoshitani Yuta and his idol. Both of them know he's been idolizing Otori who is both a bit shy to admit it and he just doesn't want to strip Hoshitani of his dream.

THESE TWO, PLEASE

Hiragi gets the idea that sets the entirety of S2 into motion and, yes, I do mean that twist we get in the post credits scene of S2 E10.

This guy goes from up-tight and strict child of the school's owner to loving younger brother and senpai.

The way they portray this character arc, with or without the Drama CDs and songs, was just brilliant and I'm here for it.

I know I said this before but I don't know if I made it specifically clear

I think I'd personally prefer it if they did away with genres such as "shounen-ai", "yaoi", "shoujo-ai" and "yuri"

Ok maybe not yaoi and yuri since they're implied to be explicit, but the other two, defo. Or what they're more commonly known as, Boys Love (BL) or Girls Love (GL)

Now with me, personally, if I'm told by the show what to ship, there's a high chance I wont ship it. There's canon couples I do support don't get me wrong (Inuyasha/Kagome, Eren/Mikasa, Tomoe/Nanami, etc), but I wont go out of my way to look into them. Also, one of those pairings is not like the other. Inuyasha/Kagome and Tomoe/Nanami are implied from the start and they are both a part of an anime with the Romance genre attached, and so I know what those shows are leading up to. However, Eren/Mikasa would be an example of one that is not. Attack on Titan does not have a Romance genre. But not having a Romance genre doesn't mean there is no Romance. It's just not a central theme.

And tbh, that's my personal preference. To not be told from the start that this ship is endgame. I want to be surprised when I watch an anime and see a couple develop a relationship through chemistry, trust, understanding, etc. Meruem/Komugi came out of an anime where Romance is basically non-existent and defo not a genre, and its definitely implied Romance, they fell in love, 100%. In a non-Romance anime. That's my fave!!!

I rarely rarely go looking into the Romance genre. I'm more of an action-gal, and I'm happy to have Romance attached in some way.

Now in terms of BL...

Shounen-Ai/BL is also a Romance genre (basically just translated to "Gay Romance"). And I've seen a few BL's where absolutely nothing has happened between the male characters, despite the label. I haven't seen Togainu no Chi in well over 10 years but I'm almost positive no male characters even hugged. And there's more like that, despite the BL label.

But anyway. Bc you know it has that BL genre, the whole time you're basically waiting on at least a kiss. And when you don't get it, you're highly disappointed in the whole anime and feel like you were conned into believing there was a Romance when there wasn't. And its just confusing, bc you're wondering if that genre should even be there.

But that's the thing, your expectations are high because the genre is telling you "these two characters will be together by the end" or "at least be heavily implied", and like any het romance anime that tells you its a romance anime, and the main characters kiss by the end or are implied to be together or on the way to getting together, you are expecting the two males leads in a BL to kiss by the end or at least have something romantic between them. And when they don't, and you're like, "why is this even called shounen-ai??? all they did is hug! friends do that!" --- is why they should just do away with the label.

My preference, like I said, is to go into an anime not labelled with Romance but then find a Romance. Like HxH or Attack on Titan.

If we take Starmyu, as an example:

These aren't wrong. These are the central themes.

However, the plot is heavily based around this sentence:

The show is two things. Its based around attending a musical academy in hopes of becoming a singer, actor, stage performer, whatever. And its also based around the main character, in a way, "seeking out" a student from the academy that inspired him a few years beforehand. He doesn't exactly try his best to seek out that student, but talks about him a lot.

And that's fine. Nothing too gay there lmao

But... between that all happening, there's a lot implied, that I'll prob do in a different post, but then girls and girlfriends are brought up and its like "ah... so the 'gay' moments are just fanservice. these characters are all prob straight" and you dont feel too much about it because, duh-duh-duh-duuuuuun---

BL isn't a genre for this anime. Neither is romance. You're not expecting anything.

You. Have. No. Expectations.

But here's the thing!!!

You can go into HxH or Attack on Titan with no Romance expectations due to lack of label, and still find a Romance in there, like I said! And they're canon af, not just shipping fodder, actual canon!

There's actually quite a bit of romance in my fave anime, Durarara and yet here are the genres:

So its like, why do I have to know the genre is BL to think there's something between these characters? Why can't it just... happen? Like they do in the "straight" animes.

But this is another sucky part.

We'll stick with Stamyu.

If this did have BL as a genre, then what the show has been giving would be labelled as "not enough". Bc BL has to mean "at least a kiss", usually. People aren't happy if they dont get at least that if the BL genre is attached. And so Starmyu would be considered a "fine anime" without BL attached, but a "disappointing anime" if BL was attached.

Nobody is saying that about Ouran. The two leads (male and female) never kissed and its considered one of the best romance animes

And that's a romance anime, not an action series with romance in the background.

But if Starmyu was labelled as BL and all they did was hug, people would be hella disappointed. However, as a non-BL, people would be happy to see them just hug, that would be enough.

It sucks bc, Yuri on Ice came along and did it.

But we know that despite mostly being centred around sports, it 100% has an actual canon Gay Romance

In. A. Non. BL. Or. Romance. Labelled. Anime.

Which changed the fucking game for a brief moment, and I haven't seen anything like it since.

BL to me sometimes feels like a warning. Like "if you enter this anime, it is gay, be warned."

It didn't take any geniuses to know that Yuri on Ice wasn't a manly anime for manly mens, and was most likely catered to girls, but, dudes could still watch it and be shocked when the gay happened, and be like "Ok I knew this anime was a little sparkly and shit, but I still watched it for the sport regardless of it being ice-skating... But why they have to put this gay shit in here??? If it had said fucking BL or yaoi, I would have stayed away! Now I'm forced to see this with my own eyes!!!"

See. We should really just do away with that genre. Not only would it be progressive, but so much fun lmao
