Patron Saints for World Mental Health Day
Today is reserved for, among many other things, World Mental Health Day. Raising mental health awareness is vital to helping to understand and accept the challenges we face internally.
Here are four patron saints I've picked to share that represent common mental health challenges that you can pursue intercession with!
✧ St. Dymphna, patron saint of mental health (nervous and mental afflictions), who experienced intense trauma herself in her lifetime
✧ St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, patron saint of stress relief
✧ St. Jude Thaddeus, patron saint of lost causes and desperate situations
✧ St. Christina the Astonishing, patron saint of mental illness who experienced a profound return from death after experiencing a seizure

Could you please pray for me? I am trying to get through college right now and I've already failed multiple classes and am struggling to not fail them again because of mental disorder issues. I am terrified of being a failure to my parents and I just want to get the certification to get a job in the field I'm looking at (aviation maintenance). I feel very stupid and alone and I just want to prove I can accomplish things and be independent, and be someone my parents can be proud of. Thank you so much if so. Also, I am not Catholic so I'm not familiar with many saints, but if you know of any saints I could look to for inspiration and motivation it would be really appreciated if you're okay with that. Thank youx7 and God bless you
Even if you fail your classes Anon, you can always take them again later. I struggled with a lot of anxiety during college trying to finish a degree but in the end, I decided the degree wasn’t worth it and I needed to prioritize my mental health. I felt bad spending the hard earned money, but I learned a valuable set of lessons from my mistakes and learned I am not a failure. My parents wanted only my happiness and I am sure most would say the same. Some parents place high expectations on us, but remember you will always have more chances pass. It might be a good idea to take a break from classes (even if it’s just one semester or two) or reduce the number of classes. Too much stress can wreck our health. I will keep you in my prayers!
Here are some saints you may find good to ask for help in praying for you. They have more than one patronage but I have listed ones related to your situation:
- St. Jude, patron saint of hope and impossible causes.
- Our Lady of Loreto, patron saint of patron saint of pilots, airmen and flight attendants.
- St. Joseph of Cupertino, patron saint of aviation, astronauts, mental handicaps, test taking, and students.
- St. Padre Pio, patron saint of stress relief.
- St. Joseph, patron saint of families, travelers, engineers and working people.
- St. Thomas Aquinas, patron saint of universities and scholars.
- St. Thérèse of Lisieux, patron saint of the sick.
- St. Raphael, patron saint of travelers.
- St. Dymphna, patron saint of those who suffer with mental and nervous disorders.
- St. Benedict Joseph Labre, patron saint of those suffering from mental illness.
- St. Juliana Falconieri, those suffering from bodily ills
- St. Christina the Astonishing, patron saint of the mentally ill.
- Our Lady of Lourdes, patron saint of healing.

Research...
Epilepsy is caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain (discovery made by Hans Berger 1924). Epilepsy is a chronic noncommunicable disease of the brain that affects people of all ages. Around 50 million people worldwide have epilepsy, making it one of the most common neurological diseases globally. People with epilepsy often have problems with unemployment, healthcare and social ostracism which can lead to mental health problems.
In the past people with epilepsy have been killed, victims to exorcisms, locked in mental institutions, unallowed to marry, encouraged to be sterilised, and denyed service from public facilities in America well into the 1970s. The first evidence of epilepsy was recorded on an old Akkadian tablet 4000years ago that described it as evil spirits entering the body. The Akkadian empire was the first ancient empire of Mesopotamia. The Ancient Egyptians believed that the cause was due to cortical disruption and Ancient Chinese texts from 770-221 BC reveals that acupuncture was used as a cure.
Epilepsy has been believed to be witchcraft, a sacred disease inflicted by the gods, contagious, bad karma from your ancestors, special abilities used to cure the ill, sickness due to a mother's neglect and an attempt by demons to pull you down to the underworld. Many exorcisms have been conducted on people with epilepsy famously in 1976 with Annelise Michel. Her story was adapted into a film called 'The Exorcism of Emily Rose'. Features of epilepsy have believed to be insanity, violent madness, murderous tendencies, moral depravity, hyperreligiousilty, hypergraphia and hyposexuality. In the 5th century. The school of Hippocrates discovered that the disease wasn't sacred or special and believed that it was curable. They discovered it was a neurological disorder and discovered it was hereditary as opposed to contagious.
Epilepsy is mentioned in three of the four gospels of the Bible (Matthew mark and Luke). Mark chapter 9 describes how Jesus cured a lunatic of demonic possession. It was believed that cures involved religious rituals and spiritual interventions or shoving people through a natural opening eg. through a hole in a tree. Christina the Astonishing was buried alive after people believing her to be dead after a seizure. She wasn't the only religious figure to have been believed to suffer from epilepsy, others include Joan of arc, St Paul, St Cecilia and St Teresa of Avila. Some people believed that St Teresa of Avila suffered from temporal lobe epilepsy (Vincent Van Gogh is also speculated to have had this type of epilepsy). The temporal lobe is located at the front of the brain and is responsible for processing emotions and the storage of short term memory. These seizures often bring auras, hallucinations, intense emotions like pain and pleasure. This theory might explain St Teresa's visions and writings. Epilepsy can often cause hyperreligiousity as many have spiritual experiences.
From this research I've found that throughout history people have constantly debated whether epilepsy is demonic or divine?

Happy Feast Day Saint Christina the Astonishing 1150-1224 Feast Day: July 24 Patronage: Those who suffer from mental disorders, health care workers for the mentally ill, Millers
Saint Christina the Astonishing was orphaned as a teenager and became a shepherdess. She died when she had a massive seizure and during her funeral, Christina rose and levitated to the roof of the church. Jesus gave her a choice to go to heaven or do penance for those in purgatory. She voluntarily consented to do extreme penances, that were witnessed by many including Cardinal Jacque de Vitry. She entered a Dominican monastery where she died at 74 of natural causes. {website}

St. Christina the Astonishing and St. Dymphna are both patron saints of the mentally ill. Christina was thought to be dead after experiencing a seizure, later to awaken during the funeral with great revelation. Dymphna escaped an abusive father to build hospitals and help the ill. I like Dymphna a lot, but I feel a pull to Christina’s story. I’ve often felt like I’ve gone through some sort of resurrection, but with a period of disenchantment and isolation. She speaks to me. St. Peter’s cross has become an important symbol to me, but I don’t feel like he entirely represents my soulfeel. I suppose I could have several saints if I wanted.

The morning after I almost decided not to wake again, I thought that I must have made a mistake. I tried to list all of the reasons I’d decided to stay But remembered only one: I am unworthy unworthy unworthy
