Spiceklub Kokata Review
Kolkata has finally caught up with the molecular gastronomy scene in recent times and now you can find a lot of places offering the whole bells and whistles kinda thing that goes with it. After my fascination with Masterchef Australia I fell in love with this technique as an art form. Seeing all those experts whip out one beautiful concoction after…

“Flavors of Mumbai presented with contemporary twist!”
There have been so many people who have asked me the question, “So..did you go to SpiceKlub yet?!” and every single time, all I could answer was, “Not yet...but I will soon!” Alas! That soon finally came round the corner and I headed there with my mom to try out the food for which I’ve been hearing rave reviews about!
Originally hailing from my motherland, India, and to be specific, Mumbai, SpiceKlub presents its food which undoubtedly reminds you of Mumbai cuisine. Whether it’s street food or casual dining indian cuisines, SpiceKlub manages to pull off familiar dishes with a contemporary makeover! They too have jumped on to the bandwagon of preparing food in the Molecular Gastronomy fashion, which lets admit, is always an entertaining factor.
Along with my mom, I ordered the Pani Puri, the Pav Bhaaji Fondue, a Kokum Margherita with Chilli Caviar and a Mango on the rocks to start with. The pani puri and the pav bhaaji have their classic flavors to them and thankfully, SpiceKlub managed to deliver it really well. The presentation too, is absolutely wonderful! Both the dishes pack a punch and in no way is bland or stale. I’d highly recommend both the dishes as appetizers to begin your eating endeavour.
What really got me interested in terms of flavor was the Kokum Margherita. It’s different, flavorsome, spicy and very, very unique. Please, do not miss out on this one! The little chilli caviar which pop into your mouth with every bite is a welcome distraction with the overall drink.
For the main course we ordered the Amritsari Vadi, a Dal Kabila, a Sun-dried Tomato and Black Olive Naan along with an Ulte Tawe Ka Paratha.
On the whole, the food was well prepared. The Amritsari Vadi held its own ground along with Dal Kabila. The level of spiciness in both these dishes are well balanced however, it probably could be a little on the higher side for some people. The sun-dried tomato and black olive naan wasn’t anything unique or different. The same happened with the Ulte Tawe Ka Paratha. They were well cooked, but perfectly normal in terms of flavor when compared to other restaurants.
For dessert we just had to go for the Paan Mousse which was a complete theatrical performance on its own. Prepared in the Gastro style, you could really smell the fragrance of paan jumping out at you from the little dish in which it was being prepared. Two thumbs up for this one!
Although we had a wonderful experience at SpiceKlub, I was a little disappointed in terms of service. Even during lunch hour at a seemingly empty restaurant, it took the servers a good 20 minutes to bring us each of our courses.
So if you’re thinking of going there, maybe you’d like to avoid dinners on the weekends since the place tends to be completely swamped! I know I definitely would love to head there again to try out the other dishes they serve!

Mexican/Italian/Vegetarian: Quattro
The owners of SpiceKlub have come up with another fantastic Vegetarian restaurant in town called Quattro with Italian and Mexican cuisine. I learnt about them through social media and after reading mixed reviews decided to take my family for a weekend lunch . I had reserved a table over the phone and reached there by 12.30pm, in order to get a table for 5. As soon as we arrived they informed us…
