Speyburn Whisky 15 y.o.
The Speyburn distillery in the Spey Valley between Rothes and Elgin was built in 1897 in Victorian style and has retained its delightful charm ever since. Speyburn is one of the smallest distilleries in Scotland. It is known for its mild, fruity Speyside single malt.

Speyburn 15 Year
Review by: The Muskox This is a lost review! I was trawling through my archives and was shocked to find that I had apparently never reviewed anything from the Speyburn distillery. This was despite the fact that I distinctly remembered trying and taking notes on Speyburn 15. Sure enough, buried in my folders was this unpublished but nearly-complete review, last modified June 21st, 2019. I haven’t…

3, 6, and 12 for the fic asks?
3. What’s your favorite fic that you’ve written?
Oh boy. Okay. I think I gotta do it by fandom, I don't think I have an overall fave. Bechloe - Magnolias and Speyburn or What Are You Doing New Year's Eve? (which I will put on ao3 at... some point!) Imodna - I like too many of my own tbh. That's why I wrote them. When the Stars Go Out I feel has to be on here. Rizzles - Hate to See Your Heartbreak (again, which I will put on ao3 at some point). Supercorp - the next thing I post is my fave of this pairing so far. It's called Shatter Me (Again and Again) - so far, I think. The struggle of a working title. But looking at just stuff I've published? Then it has to be Slow It Down since it's the only thing for them I've posted so far. I have plans for that one.
6. Are there any fics from others you reread all the time?
Absolutely. Truly so many that I can't list them all here, but here are a few examples. mosaic broken hearts by darkdisrepair - imodna. i want something just like this from jazzfordshire - supercorp. my heart's a secret (give me the words) from KelseyO - imodna. don't let her stick it to your heart - searidings - supercorp. Keys by colormetheworld - rizzles.
12. Do you have a playlist for your current WIP(s)? Share it!
Here's a Dolcissimo playlist. Here's a general imodna playlist. There are JP Saxe and Taylor Swift playlists, too, but those have spoilers. You'll get them later, if you want them.
Are you curious about something? You can ask me stuff, too! Here's the list of questions, but my ask box is always open!

 Christmas Gift Guide
Sheridans Coffee Layered Liquor
It is uniquely bottled, consisting of two separate sections, separated by glass, but fused together. One section is filled with a black liqueur, consisting of coffee and whiskey flavors, the other is filled with a white liqueur of milk white chocolate.
When pouring into a lowball glass, the white liqueur should be gently floated on top of the black liqueur.
Tasting Notes:
Nose: Once served in a glass, liquor exhales vanilla, rich chocolate, and toffee.
Palate: The attack is surprisingly soft and the creamy palate is rich, full of complimentary flavors of cream, coffee, chocolate, the lingering finish has notes of nuts and toasted hazelnuts.
Enjoy: Serve in a Rocks glass or tumbler by first pouring in the black liqueur.
Navan Vanilla Cognac Grand Marnier French Liqueur
Fine French cognac with a touch of natural vanilla from Madagascar Made by the House of Grand Marnier's passion for combining cognac with pure, natural flavors, Navan is a 40% Alc/vol liqueur, an ideal balance between the complexity of cognac and the smoothness of natural vanilla.
Tasting Notes:
Appearance: Clear, golden yellow.
Aroma: Aromatic vanilla extract and Eaux de vie with butter pastry and faint coffee bean.
Taste: The surprisingly spicy palate, with pronounced vanilla flat alcoholic cream soda with a hint of orange zest and stewed black English breakfast tea.
Aftertaste: Long concentrated vanilla fudge with lingering chili spice-like heat.
Overall: Not the mild-mannered, easy McDonald’s-style milkshake vanilla flavor you might expect to find in lesser vanilla liqueurs.
Macallan Single Malt Scotch Whisky 18 Years
The Macallan's legendary Sherry Oak 18-Year-Old, part of a range that celebrates the marriage of its rich spirit with the finest sherry-seasoned oak casks. In this case, the result of ageing Macallan's spirit solely in sherry casks for 18 years is a full-bodied palate of mature oak, ginger and raisin flavors is complimented by a light mahogany natural color.
Tasting Notes:
Nose: Dried fruits and ginger with hints of vanilla and cinnamon.
Taste: Soft and rich, with hints of spice, clove, orange and toasted mature oak.
Finish: Full and lingering with dried fruits, ginger and orange zest.
 Speyburn Single Malt 10 Years
Pretty much the only expression of Speyburn on the market until 2008. The 10-year-old may now have stable mates but it still keeps its place as the easy drinking center of the range. Speyburn continues to gather quiet momentum in the wake of updated packaging and 2012's shock World Whisky Award win for the 25-year-old.
A global favorite, Speyburn 10 years old is ever the crowd-pleaser.
Tasting Notes:
Color: Pale gold with amber highlights.
Nose: Fresh, clean with a hint of lemon.
Taste: Medium bodied with hints of toffee & butterscotch and a long, sweet finish.
 Old Monk Supreme Xxx Rum
Old Monk Supreme XXX Very Old Vatted Rum– Iconic Vatted Indian Dark Rum, launched 19 December 1954. The Rum is blended and aged for a minimum of 7 years and is dark in color with a distinct vanilla flavor. Their Rum selection includes five different Old Monk expressions. This vanilla-forward iconic vatted dark rum is on. The market since 1954 and you’d be hard-pressed to find a commercial for it.
Tasting Notes:
Appearance: Dark brown
Nose: Sugary nose with notes of caramel, toffee, and brown sugar.
Taste: Unmistakable Old Monk palate with notes translating from the nose: caramel, toffee, and brown sugar, with the addition of woody spice, tobacco, and black pepper.
Finish: Lingering finish with notes of vanilla, tobacco, and brown sugar.
 Captain Morgan Spiced Rum
Smooth and medium bodied, Captain Morgan Spiced Rum is a secret blend of Caribbean rums. Its subtle notes of vanilla and caramel give classic rum cocktails a distinctive, flavorful finish.
Deliciously different and exceptionally smooth, it has a character as unforgettable as The Captain himself! It is the perfect mix with Cola – the secret recipe of spices blends with the Cola to make a legendary mix. So, grab a bottle of Captain Morgan Original Spiced Gold Rum, raise a leg, and toast to the adventure to be had. Drink responsibly, Captain's Orders! Enjoy!
Tasting Notes:
Appearance: Medium Amber
Nose: The aroma is thick with vanilla and cinnamon notes over a dash of menthol and black pepper.
Taste: The flavors build upon the aroma with plenty of turbinado sugar and molasses, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and vanilla.
Finish: The finish is medium-length with loads of baking spices.
Bushmills 10 Yr Old Irish Whiskey
A superb 10-year-old Irish single malt whiskey and winner of Best Irish Single Malt Whiskey at the 2007 World Whiskies Awards. Wonderfully fruit-forward, with a good helping of vanilla and warming oaky spices in support.
Tasting Note:
Nose: Cooked banana and tropical fruit.
Palate: Guava, cantaloupe melon, over-ripe white peach, vanilla and peels.
Finish: Floral, spicy finish.
Overall: Add a drop of water and it tastes just like nectarine chunks in low fat yoghurt!
Serving: Given its subtlety and smoothness, this needs no water to lighten it or open it up, though a large ice cube on a hot day might not go amiss.

At first I was confused. After some very aged and truly remarkable independent bottlings, the Kensington Wine Market whisky advent calendar has backslid to a truly budget-conscious single malt. But it’s kind of a genius choice, much like using your ‘Calvin and Hobbes’ box set to achieve ergonomic and aesthetic perfection for your Zoom calls during a pandemic.
I first tired the Ardmore Legacy in February of 2017. I had recently tried some fairly experimental whiskies, like the Amador Double Barrel Bourbon, Glenfiddich's first Experimental Series release, the IPA cask, and a month's worth of independent bottlings from the Secret Spirits advent calendar. So to slide into a nearly-bottom shelf single malt could've been a huge failure. But it was exceedingly charming, especially considering the price point.
I've banged on this drum countless times, but I'll never pass up an opportunity to say it again and again: whisky freaks need to ADJUST THEIR EXPECTATIONS. When I say this is charming, I don't mean compared to a $350 bottle of the Dalmore's King Alexander III or a similarly-priced Glenmorangie Signet or whatever boutique bourbon is going for $200 these days. I mean if you're looking for a pleasant every day sipper, this is something for which you should be exceedingly appreciative.
The nose opens up super-sweet, leading with milk chocolate, honey, and caramel. That rounds out with an apple and pear fruitiness, layered with a strong undercurrent of smoke.
The palate entry is soft and thin, but very palatable and smooth. A touch of chocolatey sweetness is quickly overwhelmed by new spirit burn and ashy peat. There is some grainy cereal, coffee notes, oak spice and a vague nuttiness. It also has a bit of grassiness and a citrus zest zing. The finish is predictably short but unimpeachable while it sticks around.
The Ardmore is a $40 single malt, but it’s probably the best goddamn $40 single malt you’ll ever have. It kicks your McClelland’s, your Singleton, your Speyburn, your Ainsley Brae straight in the dick hole. It deserves to appear late in the advent, and it will surely impress some people who come into the 23rd with low expectations.

Glen Garry 1970s
Review by: Raygun Not to be confused with Glengarry, another blended Scotch. Since this apparently hasn’t been made since the 1980s, that should help. From what I can tell, John Hopkins & Co. owned Tobermory for a while and started Speyburn. They were then acquired by DCL, and this would have been produced under that ownership, which would explain the Oban and St. Magdalene. I’m not sure how…

Colección Miniaturas de Licor 5cl Whisky Laphroaig 10yo ; Speyburn 10yo LAPROAIG 10 Years Old On the far edge of the Scotch whisky map, it's supposed that the art of distillation was first brought to Islay by Irish monks. Being remote, it’s an art that flourished in the hands of the islanders, whose illegal operations tested the resolve and means of the tax man. Eventually, the law relaxed, various whisky makers set up legitimate distilleries, among them a pair of farmers, Donald and Alexander Johnston, who in 1815 founded their distillery on the island’s south coast. Laphroaig, so called after its location, ‘broad hollow by the bay.’ It would remain in family hands for the next 139 years.
