Your gifsets are always so gorgeous and crisp. Any tips for those of us just starting out? I already use 1080p video and a high frame rate but my gifs aren't as sharp as I'd like them to be.

i recommend using scripts not video frames to layers. so if you have vlc player, you pic the scene you want to gif and take screenshots of every single frame of that scene. this takes the longest out of everything but it's worth it. i use the shortcuts on my mac (e) for "next frame" and (r) to screenshot. they all end up in my picture folder.

next is the colors. i personally like to give it a bit of vibrance, add some exposure and play around with levels until i am satisfied. i have a psd pre-made with these settings that are quite universal to the gifs i make.

cut the gif, size the gif, color the gif, sharpen the gif. these steps are important to me and is what i have found works to make good quality gifs. make sure you cut the frames to your liking. i always cut 620 x something... next, change the size of the gif. go to image and then image size. i change it to the same width dimension as i cut it in (so in this case 620 x something). next, add the colors and then sharpen it!

speaking of sharpen. i use an action to smart sharpen quickly instead of doing it myself (takes longer time). i use one called "sharpen by oliviaholt" but i can't seem to find the source of it. otherwise i recommend you smart sharpen the gif to your liking!! there's tutorials for it here

i use 40 frames max, otherwise the gif will get too big. i go with 0.06 seconds and then i export it with the settings i showed in previous ask about it. nothing fancy there i don't think.

Gif Colouring Tutorial

Okay so an anon asked me to do a tutorial on how I colour TV shows and I’m not the best at explaining, and i’m not sure how helpful this will be, since I just mess around with the adjustment layers and cry a lot but i’ll try my best. This is going to be screenshot heavy because i thought it better to just show it. 

I thought it useful to mention that my gifs are usually set at 0.1 speed. but it’s all personal preference. 

Also I use two different sharpening actions. Depending on which one looks best at the time on the gif. But you should definitely use whichever one you like and such. There’s so many out there. The two I use are:- oliviaholt’s sharpen and also sofiascarson’s sharpen

The first thing I usually do is a curves layer. I’ve added in my numbers and a preview of the gifs at each step because I cannot explain to save myself. and maybe seeing it step by step helps.

Next I use the first brightness/contrast layer. These first couple steps, I usually take to get the lighting sources right. There’s probably a better way though.

I wanted a couple tweaks so I did another one.

It’s already diffusing the red a little and bringing more colours out!

Next up levels! Just honestly play around until it looks right.

next the black and white adjustment layer. Not a huge difference but it’s the little tweaks that always help in the end. 

Okay so exposure. usually I don’t mess with this too much.

Onto my favourite layer! Colour Balance! This is where most of this gifs magic happens kasfdldfk

You could leave it there. But I added two more layers so I’m going to include those here in case it helps at all.

Channel Mixer: I only messed with the constant on the red output channel.

and finally vibrance! Mess around with layers is basically all i’m saying.

Last note: I’m so sorry to anyone who was looking forward to this because it’s.... a mess jasdkfjfdf but ty to whoever requested it i’m sorry.

lowkey got the inspo from @oliviaholt but i am too, opening up my gif pack suggestions/requests for up to 3 packs only! i do have a few things to note though:

i can reject anyone i want tbh if i don’t wanna do it, i won’t do it

patience with me pls

you need to give me a source of footage. saying interviews isn’t ideal unless you say something like “from 2018 onwards”

for tv shows, i’ll probably only gif one episode. 2 if i feel the fc isn’t in that episode enough

if they have gif packs in that role, i won’t do it.
