because it’s a Tiny Bit widespread within the dream apologists to sort of,, overdramatize stuff like l’manberg hurting him. like they’re not a 100% wrong but if you look at it subjectively you can see some sort of bias going into that sort of thing that makes the character’s mistreatment a bit more blatant and intentional which,, it really wasn’t? and there wasn’t That Much of it either. especially on twitter (tumblr is much better about it) people just jump to conclusions it seems and yeah. since you brought it up i was wondering if you wanted to write a bit about it from your perspective!

we’re kinda from different corners of the fandom but i still notice that once you are too attached to a character you start taking certain evidence and giving it more weight than it actually has. there’s a blurry line between “taking away a character’s humanity” and woobification and it’s extremely difficult to find a balance when said character shows pretty much nothing of his emotional life (e. g. putting up the intimidating villain act in front of only c!tommy, pretty much everything he does making rational sense with no emotional subtext) and a lot of the fandom instantly jumps to one side or the other while it’s like.

we don’t know by far enough to say “he’s traumatized” or “he isn’t traumatized” or “he was villainized and it hurt him” or “l’manberg didn’t affect him at all”

as a very analytical person people constantly jumping to conclusions grinds my gears, but that’s about it for my own view of the situation - sorry for the rambling.

in general i agree with you that both dehumanization and woobification is Bad and i really hope getting Actual Context sorts this out (e. g. him saying he was betrayed by his friends doesn’t mean it wasn’t partially his fault or that they were allowed to leave him, but it also shows that he did care about that happening. mentioning the cat doesn’t mean anything about what happened to c!tommy but it also shows that he did care about what happened to it. it’s just always interesting to get more information about the way he feels because he usually does a very good job at hiding it.) because man.

it’s like being stuck between a rock and a hard place, especially if you also are attached to the character and are expected to automatically agree with everything the people on “your side” say. it just ends up with everyone being mad and the character being mischaracterised overall.

and by woobification, i mean exactly what you’ve already pointed out— the people who will say l’manberg purposely villainized dream, the people who will say wilbur faked his mental illness to manipulate dream, the people who are pretty much always talking about how badly dream was treated by people who were acting only fairly for themselves, usually.

for example people who act like dream was a perfect peacemaker before tommy showed up, or that tommy started most conflict. these are just actual lies that are told by c!dream himself to justify his abuse of tommy, and people fall for them incredibly easily because not a lot of people watched early dsmp and know that truthfully it was chaotic even then, and that dream was chaotic too. not to mention wilbur soot tried very hard to secede peacefully with l’manberg and dream jumped directly into war with no warning. and then people say he was forced into their war when, no, he started it.

theres also people who will say like, dream and sapnap for example are such good friends. i’m sure they cared for each other, but dream on multiple occasions has done horrible things to sapnap with no regard for his feelings (like leading fundy to sapnaps pets during the petwar, leading tommy to sapnaps pets during the other petwar and encouraging him to kill them, handing mars over to tommy to use as leverage against sapnap, etc). george he’s been less awful too but he certainly spoke over him and ignored his feelings enough that george felt hurt. he had places in his hall of attachments for beckerson and mars. george and sapnap were right to walk away from being treated like that.

there’s also what you just said here — “dream puts on a villain persona for tommy”— but honestly he acts like that around quite a few people (example: eret) and it’s usually when he’s revealing crucial info, which leads me and many others to believe that ‘persona’ is actually a more truthful version of him.

there’s the fact that he really isn’t safe for people to be around (or at least he wasn't before the prison) because he was planning to come up with ways to control every single person by stealing and threatening their attachments (some of which were not items but were living animals, or a real breathing person).

and then people will say dream was doing exile to enforce rules, or to keep the peace— when it’s very clear in canon it was a deliberate plan to get tommy on his own and into the prison. (from the way he was framing tommy for multiple crimes, and having sam set up the prison, and kidnapping tommy instead of correctly exiling him, all at the same time).

not even going into how he wants to kill and revive people for fun or make tommy immortal.

it’s just— ignoring all these actual facts and saying “oh he misses his friends, let’s get him some friends now” reminds me of like. when people would put flower crowns on pictures of serial killers. and then, there’s hardly anyone on the server who wasn’t subject to dream’s plans, so there’s absolutely no one i would be okay with him interacting with.

just remembered about the torture thing, and wow i still hate it so much. it’s someone’s sick revenge fantasy twisted into a way to get a manipulative villain sympathy, and it’s just gross to me on every account. i do think dream is traumatized-- just not by l’manberg, which was a conflict he started on his own terms. i would think l’manberg did affect him, because he was scared of losing control.

i’ve said it before and i’ll say it again— my ideal ending for dream would be for him to be sent far away from dsmp to an island full of therapy animals and super strong therapists who have never met him before. and for him to get a shit ton of therapy until he becomes a halfway normal person. and then eventually he could get integrated into society again; but a different one with new people. (although maybe dteam + bbh + puffy can visit him, they might still like him.)

none of the people on the server (who have all been affected by dream) should be burdened with befriending him or rehabilitating him— look how that turned out with sam! sam had a personal grudge towards dream and it ended with the poor dude being tortured every day; and sam himself falling into corruption and literally cutting off his boyfriends arm. like we can all see thats fucking awful right?

no one who was affected by dream should have to deal with him ever again. and contrary to popular belief, that includes a LOT more people then just tommy. dream isn’t just tommy’s antagonist, hes almost everybody’s.

the only person on the server who might also be able to stand to help dream is techno, and that’s from sheer lack of ability to give a shit. but techno is probably THE furthest thing from a good therapist there is lol, and dream needs better then that.

this kind of just ended up being a rant about my thoughts on c!dream, so im so sorry op. especially since it was probably negative for you. i hope you’re doing very well.

i guess in the end it’s true what you said— people will highlight or ignore things based on what characters they like, and it’s especially easy to do in this fandom, where half the content doesn’t even get watched and then we become a big echo chamber of half-truths.

considering dream has hurt so many of the characters i care about, i almost can’t understand how he could be someone’s favorite or comfort character— but he is nonetheless, and it would be unfair of me to be rude about that.

essentially it just bothers me to see someone who was a perpetrator of accurately portrayed abuse and manipulation (using both those words in their actual definitions, not just as random buzzwords lol) being given the flower crown edit effect. especially since he’s hurt the characters i care about a lot.

I know lot of jc apologist come from cql but honestly I watched cql long before reading mdzs and it still didn't make me very sympathetic to him? I liked how complicated he was and his entitlement made him interesting to psychoanalyze buuuuut that's about it. Didn't he literally set a dog on wwx after capturing him? Among other things? In a way that was really fucking parallel to the one with wen chao? I know fairy is no cgi hellhound but it didn't make a difference to wwx and jc must have been at least aware? He's basically just madame yu w/ a dick and more power. Novel him even more so. I decently read a take about op being mad so many reconciliation fics have jc do all the work when wwx should actually grovel first and I had to do a tripple take. Still not convinced it wasn't actual jiang cheng writing that post

i think a lot of the sympathy comes from just how hard cql pushed wei wuxians connection to lotus pier, they made him really sentimental over it and you see him constantly being haunted by his time there and his 'lost family'. while in the novel, wwx was used to jumping around and making a space for himself anywhere. he spent about ten years in lotus pier, and at least a few of those were in a time of war. i have no doubt he was fond of him earlier years in lotus pier, mostly because he was mostly free to act as the child he was. but cql puts a high emphasis on both wwx and jcs relationship and the trio sibling dynamic in general. so i think that no only humanises jiang cheng in particular, but also makes it more likely for people to feel sorry for him, especially when it comes to wwx deflecting. in the untamed they paint it as this huge tragedy, and essentially a mistake on wwxs part, emphasised more by the fact that the timeline is more janky in cql so it kinda seems like the second wwx deflects from the jiang sect everything goes wrong for him. meanwhile in the novel wwx peacefully lives in the burial mounds for over two years after he leaves the jiang sect.

wei wuxian never really makes it out that he misses being a part of the jiang sect, im sure he thinks about how much more simple his life would have been if he could have continued to be their head disciple, but he made his choices and doesnt resent the life he chose. its why he makes no move to grovel to jiang cheng once he comes to life, he doesn't see himself as part of the jiangs anymore and hes happy with that, its not like he was ever alone. wei wuxian is like the personification of chosen family, and he actively chose not to have jiang cheng as part of that family anymore. i know a lot of people defend jiang chengs actions against wwx after he came back as him "being desperate to make sure it was wwx bc he just wanted his brother back uwu", they do the same with the fact that he kept chenqing (even tho in the extras we see that jc actually only kept the flute because he thought that out of everything wwx would go looking for the first, and then he would be able to take him down, falsely assuming that wwx would care enough about his fluet to put himself at risk but thats a different post). and i think people who watch cql do this bc idk the actor for jc looking at wwx sadly sometimes and cries more. jiang cheng sympathisers assume that jiang cheng is owed everything by everyone because he had a 'rough time' and is 'all alone' like the fact that his ending ends with him being alone isnt entirely his own doing.

here are my thoughts/reactions to this weeks episode of riverdale. this wasn't requested but i posted one for another episode and it got a lot of notes (for me) so i'll do another one. this obviously will be including spoilers so i'm don't read under the cut if you haven't seen it/don't want to see spoilers! i've already seen this so they aren't technically 'first thoughts', but these were my thoughts when it happened. psa: i'm not a fan of jughead and betty. like at all. and sometimes archie. so if you're a die hard stan, who'll send me angry messages - feel free to because i love discussions!

im not sending this to attack you and sorry if this is a null issue at this point, but the gwsn thing was probably because op literally said ‘i dont stan but,’ there was no indication that they were going to stan in their tweet. so for groos who have to deal with people solo stanning miya a lot and ignoring the group and not helping the group’s sales and streams when gwsn has almost gone a year without a comeback, we get tired and sensitive of people (especially bg stans) talking about only miya. gwsn’s creative director left, there’s no news of a comeback in sight, and gwsn is nearing their 3rd year with no music show wins. do you see how that could make fans irritable? anyway most of the 400 qts were saying to not gatekeep and calling gwsn nugu, so really the issue turned from like a couple groos being rude (there’s like 20 of us and i didnt even see the post so it’s a fair estimate that it was only like a few ppl being rude in the qts) to bg stans and non-groos alike being passive aggressive towards gwsn.

Yes, as I said I completely understand where the issue came from, to me it was more a miscommunication than someone saying they only cared about Miya, which is absolutely why I can see why someone groos got mad. I think a point I might have missed saying was that I didn’t condone anyone being rude for no reason, and that the tweet at least to me didn’t give enough reason for backlash since the op did say they had listened to a couple of their songs in a reply tweet. They would have listened to more had the fandom not scared them away, does that make sense? I think... it’s a difficult balance between actually calling out the solo stans who aren’t helping grow the fandom (and therefore help the group) and scaring away the ones that would have done. I don’t like solo stans for any group, as I said I think they can be disrespectful to groups, but I think there was a little bit of jumping to conclusions in this particular instance, saying “I don’t stan GWSN” I don’t think means the same as “I will never stan GWSN”, if someone does say something closer to that then there is an absolute right to be upset, but not giving someone the time to get to know them as a group, listen to their music and like the other members, I just felt that happened here and I felt I should say something. It’s just a whole messy situation, to put it simply I just don’t think anyone on any side of it should be rude. I am frustrated and I’m tired and I’m slightly worried for the group although I’m trying to stay positive, and when I see someone saying they don’t care about anyone other than Miya the angry scandal maker in me rises to the surface, but I just think overreacting is having a negative impact, even if it only was a couple of groos in this case. I’m really not trying to invalidate anyone’s frustration but maybe it’s a sort of assess the situation and think before you speak, if that makes sense? I hope that didn’t come off as rude I just want there to be more positivity in the fandom and politeness maybe when it comes to any non-groo who says a word about Miya? If someone doesn’t explicitly say they’re not interested in the other members just be nice in introducing them to the group, if someone does say they don’t care call them out but not in a way that’s rude? prefacing to say that i agree with op here completely. i don't normally post stuff like, this especially because I've long since left tma behind (for reasons like the following) but I've seen the sentiment op is talking about floating around recently and as a south asian person I do want to say that parts of it feel mad racist. im not saying it's intentional, or that it's a malicious choice, because frankly it feels like ignorance in itself and nothing more.

samama khalid is canonically welsh-pakistani due to his casting, is he not? the common fanon portrayal of jon also happens to be a brown guy, often ambiguously so. many white artists and other fandom creators tend to not look into the specifics of How he's brown, past the idea that he simply is. as such, it's very important to note that the idea of another *seperate* character being a "2.0" of the first for having racial characteristics shared by races being portrayed is a bad way of viewing it.

please, take the time to examine why you as a participant of this fandom space jump to that viewpoint of a new character of color's depiction. please do research if you can because instances of south asian culture vary sooo wildly, we aren't a monolith! you can easily make a unique and distinguishable character design as compared to jon without erasing sam's identity as a brown guy ! south asia is a huge region, and thus facial features and stuff may vary a lot ! say your brown jon is a british-indian man, or a british-bengali man. his physical features and experiences, while some may be shared, can just as easily vary from sam, a welsh-pakistani man. if they're both pakistani, region can effect things and so on and so forth, that's what research is for.

this is a long post and op im really sorry for just hijacking yours instead of making my own, but ultimately, i ask that we be aware of what we say and conscious in how we act towards others in a shared fandom space.

I’m sorry too. I jump to anger and defense when the topic of CSA gets brought up. I don’t mind the messages– I would rather you send 100 and me be able to understand more what you’re trying to say/where you’re coming from than just one and me being stuck mad and defensive. 

also no one asked and this is just my opinion based off of my own and several friends’ experience but if you’re a victim of CSA and you’re writing shit like that, you’re hurting yourself more so than any critic from someone else ever could. find healthier ways to cope and reach out for professional help.

STOP OMG THIS MAKES SO MUCH SENSE BC THE ADS IN WANDAVISION WERE ALL MESNT TO ME MESSAGES STRANGE WAS SENDING WANDA BASICALLY TRYING TO WARN HER AND GET HER TO SNAP OUT OF IT. IM FINNA NERD OUT RN IM SO SORRY TO DO THIS TO YOUR POST OP DHEJEKK

But omg okay yall so i have a theory that in wandavision she’s already created a nexus of sorts because all of these shows take place around the same time period, and wanda traveling through time day by day changing the era for her shows (bc of her childhood and finding comfort in them) did end up fucking up westfield and led to a multitude of glitches that we see throughout the show, esp when wandas trying to suppress the fact that things are of her doing. And ofc Strange our time keeping king is very aware of this bc hello he has the time stone and hes meant to become the sorcerer supreme so ofc he alongside other sorcerers would be v aware of wandas little hiccup (torture machine) moment. However because of how truly powerful wanda is i dont think strange couldve properly put an end to things bc while wanda was unaware of the extent of her power as the scarlet witch, we as viewers and nerds have the knowledge that shes one of the most powerful beings in the universe and possesses the ability to essentially break the universe. In creating westfield i believe wanda creates a nexus but manages to almost fix it (keyword being almost here) bc we see at the wnd of the show that she takes everything down and frees those in the town, however the presence of her brother from the fantastic 4 universe proves that this little gap she created allowed him to either accidently jump into this loop or he was brought in by agatha bc it was agatha all along (i love her). Now going into agathas character and how she connects to all of this, homegirl knew sum was up and basically from my perspective as both a comic nerd and just a bitch i guess idrk agatha isnt a bad person-shes just lonely and kinda miserable bc st a certain point power cannot fulfill happiness (which i hope we see in Loki as well), and she will be brought back and shes essentially gonna teach Wanda how to be a witch bc you can do all the reading you want-but wandas execution is gonna be lacking and shes gonna need agathas guidance hence why wanda left her in westfield under her nosey neighbor persona.

Now doubling back i feel like Loki is gonna give us a better understanding of wandavision bc that shit was confusing the first watch no cap and my literal theory is loki gets out and breaks the time which creates the multiverse of madness bc i genuinely dont think hes gonna get the hero-arc character development as of rn, and if he does it doesnt really make much sense to me esp because in the original timeline which we’ll eventually see again-hes dead. But it makes sense that he goes back to being a villain or even antihero because he knows in the multiverse he can stay ALIVE and not be the TVA’s pawn. Also this is setting the foundation for Kang the Conquerer’s appearance as well because i think hes gonna be the next “thanos” if that makes sense, esp w the multiverse and specifically the fantastic four becoming more and more evident. Also i lowkey wanna see Loki enter the wandavision time cycle but i dont think he will, but it would still be cool to see that (even if he isnt himself which odds are he wouldnt be). But yeah im 110% positive wanda laid the foundations for the large nexus thats finna happen and then Loki triggers it all-esp w the whole “the evil variant we’re looking for is actually you” which is actually such a dope concept being that this loki being in existence w the tesseract has already triggered a nexus reaction of sorts which should lead to loki’s personal timelines all fucking up-hence fighting multiple variants of himself and it ties into the scene when he has to sign off on everything hes ever said bc that would follow the dialogue of this specific version of himself, and it ties back into the convo he has w homeboy trying to figure out what loki’s drive is for being a murderous dbag bc the best way to beat a villain is to understand their thought process and get s few steps ahead of them-its the reason endgame worked so well and Tony was able to get the gauntlet snd snap shit back into reality. Also rip him i guess. Oh and another random thing that made me giggle thinking ab it: the cat that scares loki might be a flerken like goose
