You went wrong by remarrying, Finwë.
Finwë: Nolofinwë, you’re one I a million.
Arafinwë: That means there’s 67 of you in Tirion.
Fëanáro: Find yourself.
Nolofinwë, nodding along: Start an army.
Fëanáro: Overthrow the Valar.
Finwë: Where did I go wrong?

Thingol, Luthien, and Dior’s claim to the silmaril bugs the living daylights outta me and I’m gonna break down why. This goes a bit beyond ownership laws.
Starting with basics. What are the silmarils? Gems created by Fëanor that hold the light of the Two Trees. Who in Beleriand saw the light of the trees and no doubt misses it like a limb? Are here in part to avenge their destruction? The Noldor.
The Sindar never went to Valinor. They might find the gems beautiful but that’s it. There’s no cultural or emotional connection to them beyond ‘pretty stone, look how awesome our princess was.’ There’s no appreciation for what they hold. No understanding that this stone is one of the *last* things that holds the ancient light of the Trees.
The Noldor meanwhile not only saw the Light, they had entire festivals surrounding it. Grew their entire culture, their lives, under and around it. Now the trees are destroyed, their king killed defending these jewels. And this last beacon of hope, a piece of the home they can never return to, a piece of light that will never come back, is being kept by people who can’t even begin to understand the significance of what they keep.
Now imagine being the sons of the one who made this jewel from a culture of people who value craft above all else.
Not only is it light, it’s the result of years of toil and experimentation of your father, the one who managed to do what no one had ever even thought of. Fëanor’s sons would have been the first to see these jewels, probably saw him make prototypes, work equations whilst they worked on their own crafts. Provided what relief they could to his ever working mind and inadvertently gave him ideas that helped solve problems he encountered along the way. Suddenly it’s not only a key part of their culture, it’s something core to their family.
Then Fëanor is killed and in many ways it’s the most important thing they have left of their father. Now it’s a source of memory too, for someone doomed to the Halls for eternity. Who they’ll likely never see again unless they’re killed.
Now from what I’ve heard, Tolkien says the Fëanorions lost their right to the Silmarils when they killed for them. Which makes no sense considering the Silmarils were *created* by Fëanor. Yes the light was created by the Valar, but what, you’re gonna say ‘I created electricity so that lightbulb you made is actually mine.’ That’s not how it works. Fëanor made the casing for the stones and figured out how to hold the light, without aid from the Valar. It doesn’t matter what actions they take, the right to the Silmarils remain theirs and theirs alone. The jewels hold no power of their own, they’re literally objects. Healing objects at most. Morals do not dictate their ownership, hallowed or not.
Tolkien going on to say the right of Doriath’s Silmaril actually goes to Beren and Luthien for taking it from Morgoth gives me frankly coloniser vibes.
‘Oh this thing I stole was originally stolen from you? Too bad. I took it so it’s mine now. Don’t care how important it is to you, your entire culture, and your people.’
Get where I’m coming from?
All in all the whole situation gives me Bad Vibes and I really don’t like the attitude the Sindar have to the Silmaril. In terms of Elwing, I can partly forgive her purely based on trauma response. Fine. Doesn’t make it right, but I understand. But that never would’ve been a problem if her father, grandmother, or great grandfather had the sense to acknowledge the silmaril was never theirs to keep. Don’t like the Fëanorions, (too bad) at least give it back to the Noldor.

Of Caranthir.
Caranthir looks like Miriel.
Because even though Tyelkormo has the platinum hair of the Noldor queen, he does not look like his grandmother.
But Indis can see Miriel in Carnistir, when Fëanáro's son moves about the Finwë household, she is able to see her in the stubbornness that the prince dazzles and even in his angry outbursts, she can sense a gleam in the shadows of his eyes that she had only seen in Þerinde.
In the same way, Fëanáro can see Miriel when Carnistir is embroidering in the depths of his room accompanied only by a few candles that produce enough light to work without problems, he can find her in the meaningless humming of his son that many times have generated tears in his eyes.
Finwë can see Miriel when Carnistir smiles, he inherited her smile, and he can't help his heart squeezing when he sees his grandson with a clear joy in his face.
That's probably the reason for him to look up to him just a little bit more than his other grandchildren.

That's Collateral. Collateral Moneyfinwë.
Finwë is like “Of course I love all my sons equally. Right, Fëanor, Falafel and Finances?”

míriel’s name means jewel daughter and the silmarils are jewels, because all of fëanor’s accomplishments boil down to trying to prove that he’s good enough for his mother to come back.

The Silmarillion ultimate playlist
It’s the time of Spotify wrap-ups and whatnot and this gave me an idea: let’s make a giant, collaborative playlist for the Silmarillion!
Drop the songs that make you think of a specific character, your OCs, relationship, event, place, or just gives you major Silm Vibes in the reblogs and tags. Put links to them, write essays about these songs if you want, or just reblog to share further, but the goal is to have fun and discover as many songs as possible.
You can share any song or musical piece you want, no matter the genre or language, the only rule is that it can’t be a song by Tolkien nor a track from the LotR movies or musical, nor the Hobbit or any musical adaptation of Tolkien’s works (I see you Finrod Rock Opera. I will listen to you one day).
Anyways, here are my songs, and the link to the collaborative playlist:
Eärendil, Starwing: Sailboat of Mine - Eurielle & Mario Grigorov
Eöl, Nan Elmoth: Hotel California - Eagles
Aredhel: Touch the Sky - Brave; I want to Break Free - Queen;
Nerdanel, Anairë and Eärwen: Friends will be Friends - Queen
Findis: Ave Maria - Franz Schubert (specifically sung by Maria Callas)
Morgoth: Back on the Throne - Firewind
Lúthien: Savage Daughter - Sarah Hester Ross; Queen of King - Alessandra
Maglor’s Gap: I wanna be in the Cavalry - Colm R. McGuinness (both the original and the reprise)
Maglor: Requiem, Lacrimosa - W.A. Mozart
Fingon/Maedhros: Princes of the Universe - Queen
Túrin Turambar: Live and Die by the Sword - Firewind
Fëanor (from the moment he swears the Oath to his death, but specifically Alqualondë and Losgar): Wars of Age - Firewind
Amarië: I will survive - Gloria Gaynor
Eluréd and Elurín: Erlkönig - Franz Schubert; Come Little Children - Hocus Pocus (cover by Erutan)
Finwë: Sin - Lia Marie Johnson
Helcaraxë: Rise from the Ashes - Firewind
Nirnaeth Arnoediad: Bloodstained Ground - Eluvetie
Sons of Fëanor: Threefold Death - Eluvetie
Edain/ end of the War of Wrath vibes: Prologue - Eluvetie
Fingolfin: Last of the Lords - Battlelore
Tuor/Idril: Song of the Sea - Nolwen Leroy
Maglor, Elrond and Elros: The Magic Lullaby - Eurielle
Thingol/Melian: Cat People (Putting out Fire) - David Bowie
Nolofinwëans: Hey Brother - Avicii
Celegorm and Curufin in Nargothrond: (Do)minion - Eluvetie
As you can see, this playlist is completely random, jumping from lullaby to death metal to 80’s pop without rhyme nor reason. It’s just a giant melting pot of Vibes
And now, it’s your turn to play!

Wait. I just had a thought. Galadriel is considered the most powerful and oldest of the elves remaining in middle earth in the third age right? But if we take into consideration that Maglor is still wandering the coasts then he would be the oldest since Galadriel is the youngest of the Finwëians, he could be less powerful especially since Galadriel has a ring of power but I’m pretty sure if Galadriel didn’t posses Nenya they would be evenly matched when it comes to the Songs of Power.
I know the argument that since Galadriel learned at the feet of a Maia it means she’s more powerful but I refuse to believe that Maglor didn’t learn from Maias in Valinor, especially since his father and mother were both taught by the Aulendur and despite Feanors mistrust in the Valar didn’t seem to be the type of parent to forbid better teachers than him to teach his sons what they want (Oromë and Celegorm and maybe the Ambarussar). Therefore it stands to reason that if Maglor is still considered to be alive during the third age he could be a match to Galadriel if not for the ring of power she wields.
I think the only reason she is considered the oldest living elf is either 1) Maglor is largely considered dead or 2) they don’t want to credit a kin slayer with the title of eldest or both.
But I’m also a feanorian simp so maybe that’s why I’m so hung up on this.

Well now I need to know something.
Silmarillion Headcanon
Feanor is absolutely awful when it comes to expressing genuine feelings verbally to people he cares about, and is equally bad about choking out apologies. They have a tendency to come out stilted and insincere.
So when Feanor is back in Valinor (after the world has been fixed), and begins to actually get along with his half-siblings (and their descendants) and care about them he turns to actions instead of words. He drags them to his forge to show them new things, Feanor cuts time out of his schedule to be with them (even if it makes him late), and most often, he makes them jewelry. Tons of jewelry and gems are made for his family, all made to the exact style preference of each individual. He never sticks around to present it, just gives it over or drops it on their doorstep and runs off. Feanor is always nervous that they won’t like it, or they they will change their mind about trying to bond with him. He always feels relief when he sees them wear it the next day.

Crack AU where Nolofinwë calls Fëanáro the worst brother ever.
I'd argue there are worse brothers than Náro (*cough Moringoþo cough*), but Nolo said what he said, and Fëanáro is not one to be the worst at anything, thank you very much.
(Especially when it's Nolo saying it!)
So Fëanáro attends Findis' dance recitals. He gifts Nolofinwë Ringil (which I believe he did in canon anyway, but this Ringil is even ✨ shinier ✨. He invents the tuba for Írimë, who really wanted to learn to play a never before seen instrument. He makes Arafinwë a swan-shaped nightlight for when he's at Alqualondë studying (and flirting).
Eventually, he grows to be able to spend more than three hours in his half-siblings' presence. (Yes, including Nolofinwë.) Then, he grows to almost enjoy it. Then, he starts to seek them out. Love grows between them.
Fëanáro becomes the best brother out of spite.

It's almost midnight, and I used to listening to random songs 30 minutes before go to bed. And after a very long time, suddenly I'm in the mood to listening to this song again. I remember I listening this song when it came out and turned out this song is GOT's unused soundtrack.
But instead of GOT, why I feel this song really suit Turgon and the fall of gondolin. Like "Gloria Regali, peace and understanding. Forever may you reign" 😭 like it's just him!! This song made for him and Gondolin!! 😭
youtube
And then this one.... This one is literally suit for the house of Finwë and Fëanorean 😭
Please whoever will gonna bring the 1st age materials to the live action, can you just use this song? 😭

I'm writing another fic (an au, naturally) and have come to some incredibly fun headcanons about Fëanor and Indis' relationship
#Fae Rambles Into The Void#listen listen#Fëanor is the one to reintroduce Finwë and Indis#and he does it thinking 'oh my father should have a friend while I'm off at my apprenticeship'#and then they're married and Fëanor is furious but his father is happy? and Indis is only a *companion* after all#it's not like she's going to be anything more than that#and then they have Findis#and Fëanor is furious but...Findis is cute and she looks like her mother as she grows#and so he can pretend so his father remains happy and pleased because Fëanor lives to please his father#but then Fingolfin is born and the reason Finwë wanted to remarry (for more kids) comes out#and Fëanor is furious and he isn't talking himself out of this one#so he takes it out on Fingolfin who looks more like Finwë than Fëanor does and who must obviously be the more perfect son#because obviously Fëanor wasn't enough for Finwë#and Fingolfin adores him and hates him in part because Fëanor (in his eyes) is the perfect son that he must aspire to be#and Findis runs away to Valmar because she isn't getting in the middle of that as Finarfin runs to the Teleri#and Lalwen becomes the only one of Fëanor's half siblings he gets on with because she doesn't try to usurp his place (in his eyes)#and Fëanor - who had written to Indis to encourage her to meet with Finwë again and who made their matching crowns as a wedding present#starts actively hating his step/half family#because he cannot jsut be the perfect son: they also have to not be good otherwise Finwë will think he was right to remarry#but he wasn't (in Fëanor's eyes) because Fëanor was the perfect son as he always was#and then the relationship between everyonr gets worse and worse and more distant
