hi zozo (i gave u a nickname hope u like it) this is my official hi to youu as ur mootie
i wish this was a happy one but alas pms is hitting me so hard i woke up today feeling better after weeks and i showered but then my mood just plummeted again and i tried to fix it by going on a walk and it did not help which is surprisingly bc it usually does help but instead today i wanted to just dramatically fall onto the street and sob but i didnt <3 held myself together til i got back home. but yeah
do u have any tips for feeling better? suggest me something pls im like dying inside a lil :/
hi rose!!! i love the nickname heheh it’s cute <3 i’m always glad to see you around the dash!
pms is the worst and god if i don’t understand the mood swings. feeling like you’re on top of the world one moment and feeling horrible the next.
my recommendations are: read fics about characters you like!!!! especially happy fics—those always make me feel all warm and fuzzy. watching a comfort show or movie is great, too. something that is familiar and will put you in a better frame of mind. you can also treat yourself to something! whether it’s a fancy beverage or yummy snack or a trip to the bookstore—something that will lift your spirits, even if it’s only temporary. there is no shame in enjoying life’s fleeting pleasures!
i know this response is late, but i hope you feel some comfort knowing you’re not alone!

Hi! In light of the recent episode, Do you think Mewtwo was in character?
Hi Anon! Thank you for the question! Strap in for an essay.
Disclaimer: I watched Episode 46 of Pokemon Journeys in Japanese with English subtitles. I think what’s considered in-character and out-of-character is very subjective. What I interpret as Mewtwo’s personality may be very different from someone else, and that’s OK! Taking the events of Mewtwo Strikes Back and Mewtwo Returns into account, I think Mewtwo is mostly in-character in this episode, though I am surprised by some of the ways he reacts to Ash and Goh, particularly the latter.
I think the setup is very like Mewtwo. He takes up temporary residence on Cero Island, “an isle surrounded by steep cliffs that keep people away,” as the lab assistant says. Sounds very similar to Mt. Quena. It’s secluded, heavily forested, and is built like a fortress, keeping humanity out. Unknown to Ash & co., he is there protecting a group of Pokemon who have been abused by humans.
Mewtwo saves Ash and Goh from drowning after they fall over a waterfall and pass out. When Ash asks him if he is the one who saved them, Mewtwo stays silent, glaring. This is very reminiscent of how Mewtwo goes through some mental gymnastics in justifying his rescue of a bus full of innocents on Mt. Quena. He still dislikes humanity, sure, but he now has a conscience, not to mention a bit of a soft spot for Ash. This encounter feels very in-character to me.
Then Mewtwo asks Goh why he is seeking Mew. Goh tells him that “catching every Pokemon to reach Mew” is his dream. Mewtwo’s eyes narrow. He asks Goh what he means. Goh reasons that catching a Pokemon means understanding it. In understanding every Pokemon, Goh believes that is how he will also understand Mew. And then Goh has the audacity to threaten to catch Mewtwo in an effort to “know” it.
It’s here that I am surprised that Mewtwo continues to keep his cool. To my ears, Goh’s reasoning sounds flimsy and a bit offensive. He sounds an awful lot like a scientist wanting to collect a thing in order to study it, something I’m sure Mewtwo is not at all happy to hear. I think Mewtwo of the MSB days would have jumped to the conclusion that this kid is a threat and needs to be dealt with. But it looks like Mewtwo has matured to the point of knowing what kind of people are actually dangerous and which ones are not. I’m sure the fact that Goh is Ash Ketchum’s friend doesn’t hurt.
So. Whether Mewtwo is inching closer to homicide or not, luckily for Goh, Ash changes the subject.
“Mewtwo, I want to battle you! [...] You’re fine with that, right?”
Mewtwo pauses, looking at the two determined--if not overconfident and misguided--kids, including the one who saved his life multiple times. And he smirks.
“As you wish.”
Mewtwo has matured past the point of pulverizing people as soon as they irritate him. He now protects others who have experienced the same traumas he has. But he can’t resist a battle. Especially against a kid who just threatened to catch him.
After an intense fight, Mewtwo unsurprisingly lays waste to Ash and Goh’s Pokemon. Mewtwo says he has “enjoyed today more than anything in a long time.” It makes me wonder if he’s been starved for conversation or battle or both. His whole attitude towards fighting Ash and Goh leads credence to the idea that it’s in Mewtwo’s very nature to want to fight. Perhaps he’s been trying to resist that side of himself, but today someone asked for it and he got to deliver.
Mewtwo decides that Ash and Goh have “formed bonds properly” with their Pokemon, that they treat their Pokemon with respect and are thus acceptable. This shows how Mewtwo has grown past the idea that Pokemon and humans can never be friends.” He may or may not still think collecting Pokemon and battling them for sport is decent, but he does believe there is a right and wrong way to do it.
Finally, we get a great line from Mewtwo, as he is wont to do.
“You are frail, fleeting, immature… But that is exactly why you possess infinite potential.”
Mewtwo acknowledges Ash, Pikachu and friends’ flaws, but instead of seeing them as evidence of a corrupt world, he sees them for who they can become, the kind of future they can create. I think that’s beautiful.
Going from a confused, vengeful superbeing to someone who explores the world, using his powers to save Pokemon in need while still maintaining his edge is a wonderful bit of development for Mewtwo’s character. I feel the episode did a solid job keeping Mewtwo in-character while also developing him in a reasonable way. I of course have my nitpicks. I am surprised at the patience he shows Goh. I want to know more about Mewtwo’s escapades and wanted more conversation between him and Ash. Overall, though, I think Mewtwo is handled well in this episode.

happy 2021! i really hope we all have a better year this year but for now, here’s a list of my favourite kylo/hux fics that were published in 2020, ones that got me through days of lonliness and sadness to make me smile ✧
thank you fic writers of the kylux fandom! (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧
- keep in the dark (to stay out of the light) by howlingshame Modern AU. Smuggler Kylo Ren runs afoul of Armitage Hux, head of the First Order crime ring. Instead of killing him outright, Hux decides to keep him for his own instead. Kylo is none too thrilled with the situation, but Hux has plenty of patience. He wants Kylo to be his in every sense of the word, and they've got all the time in the world. [E, 247k words, warnings for violence, stockholm syndrome, sub kylo & dom hux]
- Please Remember I Love You by @bumblebae8 After murdering Snoke, Kylo Ren flees alongside Rey, returning to the Reistance and to his mother after ten years. They at once begin strategizing on how to take down the corrupt and evil First Order. [M, 65k words, no warnings, redeemed ben, skywalker family drama]
- Children of War by @starryartemis After a complicated diplomatic mission went awry, General Hux and Kylo Ren accidentally find themselves tasked with their most difficult mission: becoming parents. Despite their complex relationship, they both agree that raising an offspring will help bring glory to the First Order. Their original vision of a united family quickly falls apart as Hux and Ren cannot see eye to eye in what they want the future to hold. [E, 162k words, warnings for violence, kylux science babies, slow burn]
- I Should Live in Salt for Leaving You Behind by Asrael_Valtiri Of course, he’d betrayed Ren, to save the Order. To save himself and his people. To try to save Ren, in a way.Strange, Hux thought, closing his eyes against the glare of the overhead lighting. He pretended that the wetness escaping the corner of his eye was from the brightness. He failed.Stupid, he amended. Stupid, Armitage. [E, 65k words, no warnings, a TROS fix-it, kylo clones]
- Against All Odds by Kittens Kylo really doesn't care for people, but he'll always help an animal in need. When he sees a dog covered in mud on a cold, rainy day, he can't help but try to help. What he didn't expect was for the dog to be a fox and the fox to be a man. [E, 49k words, warnings for violence, modern au, fox hux]
- Hadopelagic by DustOnBothSides [WIP] After a life of staying pharmaceutically heat-free, Hux has to allow his body to go through at least one natural cycle, lest there be consequences. He takes a shore leave and travels to a former omegan retreat, abandoned and all but forgotten after the fall of Old Republic. Ren, not knowing of Hux's predicament, decides to follow, suspecting treason. He finds something else instead. [E, 33k words, omega hux & alpha kylo]
- Sup From My Mouth by @atlinmerrick [Kylux Adjacent] Dolly Oblonskaya never precisely introduces her old friend to her children’s new tutor, no. She does put one lonely man in a room with the other again and again and again...and to her delight Konstantin Levin and Francisco Garupe take care of the rest. Or, this is the story of how an idealistic young Russian aristocrat helps heal a mourning young Jesuit priest, one very cold Moscow winter. [E, 58k words, no warnings, Fransisco Garupe/Konstantin Levin]
- Lighting the Fuse by hey_honey "What is going on?" Phasma asked when Hux returned from his meeting with Leia looking pale. He stared at her. "The Queen's son agreed to marry a First Order official on one condition," he said. "And?" Phasma encouraged. "That official has to be me," he said. [E, 30k words, no warnings, omega ben & alpha armitage, mpreg, ben is ruler of naboo]
- Across the Stars, I am Home by @venetumdrabbler [WIP] Before leaving to go undercover in the First Order, Armitage Hux had made promises. Keep an eye and report when able to the republic, and later the resistance. Keep tabs on the dark force user Snoke. And most important of all: Bring Ben Solo home. So far Hux had managed, or was managing, 2 out 3. Then there is an awakening. [M, 42k words, no warnings, jedi armitage au, slow burn]
- Pro Nobis Solum by CarelessHux (AraSigyrn) Kylo Ren wakes after Starkiller. Alone. [M, 8k words, no warnings, post tfa au, established relationship]
- sisyphus rolls his boulder to the top by yogurtgun While trying to convince Rey to turn to the Dark on the Steadfast, Kylo feels Hux's presence in the Force disappear. [T, 6.7k words, warnings for violence, tros fix-it, temporary character death]
- i can make your dreams come by claquesous It feels like the small hours of the morning, the blurry in-between Hux calls early and Kylo calls late. “Can’t even make it through the night without a pillow to hump, can you?” Hux sneers. [E, 3k words, no warnings, somnophilia, sub kylo & dom hux]
- Knot Finished by Ki_Ken_Tai_Ichi Kylo learns a bit more about Arkanis physiology through practical demonstrations. [E, 2k words, no warnings, hux is alien, top hux & bottom kylo]
- 90 Day Fiancé by @bostarsky & @sunnywritesstuff “Maybe that means you’ll be more inclined to choose me,” Hux hints, glancing over at a drone buzzing by with a sneaky look on his face. Perfect, he’ll create as much support for himself with the public as possible. "What I choose doesn’t matter,” he croons, making it sound as romantic as he possibly can to hide the true meaning of the words. [E, 38.5k words, no warnings, alpha hux & omega kylo, kylo amidala, creepy snoke]
- What if We Tried Again? by @penpenhooray Perhaps, but did Pryde bother to check if he was actually dead?Armitage Hux may be many things, but a fool was not one of them. So rather than stay with the First Order and watch it burn, Hux decides that faking his death would be preferable, leaving him free to tie up his one loose end. His ex-husband, Kylo Ren. But what happens when Ren...isn't quite Ren anymore, but just as "dead" as Hux? What happens if they face their feelings surrounding their failed marriage? What if they dared to try again? [T, 2.7k words, no warnings, tros fix-it, mpreg & miscarriage]
- Where Do You Go When You're Lonely? by @vadianna Fresh off a grueling undercover mission on an unpleasant Outer Rim planet, Kylo Ren wants to eat, drink, and sleep. Unfortunately, Hux is sitting at the only bar in the area. Thinking that Hux is there to brief him, Kylo soon realizes that Hux is off-duty, and has also never seen him without his helmet on. Things escalate, and the two wind up finishing Kylo's mission together as they both get to know each other. [E, 29.3k words, no warnings, false identity, bottom kylo & top hux]
- Team Hux or Team Ren? by AdamJensens General Hux overhears a conversation between stormtroopers that opens his eyes to a competition between the troops of the First Order. He discovers his subordinates are not only loyal and devoted but also obsessed – Hux has fans. So does Kylo Ren, and there's a kind of war going on between the two groups calling themselves Team Hux and Team Ren. What Hux doesn't know yet is that there's a third group solely focused on shipping the two co–commanders. There's fanfiction, fanart and all kinds of crazy theories. Shipping, as Hux will soon discover, is a serious business. [E, 11.5k words, no warnings, crack treated seriously, mutual pining]
- Under Covers of Darkness by Camellia Cook (thekurosakiconundrum) Alpha twins Ben and Kylo have a somewhat unusual arrangement with their mate Hux: they're together, all three of them, and it's not strictly a Hux-in-the-middle situation. [E, 3.3k words, no warnings, threesome, sibling incest alpha ben & alpha kylo & omega hux]
- Share the Load by @emperorsvornskr Hux runs into Kylo while dealing with his unique Arkanan biology- and Kylo is dealing with some self confidence issues. It's a match tailor made for the both of them. [E, 6.1k words, no warnings, alien armitage hux, trans kylo, eggs]
- Safety in his arms by @redcole Kylo knows it's time to bond with Hux, he just wants to make sure that his intentions are clear. After all, it isn't often that an omega courts an alpha. [M, 3.2k words, no warnings, omega kylo & alpha hux, mpreg]
- Horny Hearts by @rattlesnake777 [Kylux Adjacent] Techie has a new flatmate called Matt and all he can really think about is doing it with him... [E, 18.3k words, no warnings, Clan Techie/Matt The Radar Tech, modern au, misunderstandings]
- Collars and Kisses by koi_boi Kylo loves his little fox and has missed him dearly after a long mission away. Hux, not so much, or so Kylo thinks. Then he actually thinks for once and comes to A Realization™. They fuck, they cuddle, then they get soft and tender. Disgusting. [E, 3.4k, no warnings, fox hux, fluff & smut, dom kylo & sub hux]
- the chancellor's gift by @thethespacecoyote Supreme Leader Kylo Ren goes on a mission to retrieve something invaluable for his lightsaber-obsessed chancellor. However, his plans for presenting the treasure to Hux are unfortunately derailed when a group of insurgents kidnap the chancellor and hold him hostage, threatening both Hux's life, and the life of their unborn pup. It seems, even years into their reign, that there are still enemies foolish enough to try to take from Kylo what's his. [M, 5.3k words, warnings for violence, alpha kylo & omega hux, mpreg, protective kylo]
- Entrapped by @kyluxtrashpit While searching for a mysterious Force artifact for Snoke, a squadron of Stormtroopers goes missing. Kylo insists on going out alone then, certain he can find and face down whatever might have killed them and succeed in getting the artifact. The creature responsible, however, has other plans for him. [E, 3.4k words, rape/noncon, tentacle sex, protective hux]
- Your Chain Around My Neck by @bastila-s After the council meeting about the Sith fleet, Kylo asks Hux to stay behind and "prove" he isn't a spy. [E, 3.6k words, no warnings but dubcon tag, power dynamics, smut, dom kylo & sub hux]
- Regret by @abraxas-drake Kylo tries to get Hux to relax under the guise of a work discussion. When things go terribly wrong, Hux must rely on the new Supreme Leader to save his life. [E, 3.8k words, warnings for violence and threats of noncon, alpha kylo & omega hux, protective kylo, forced into heat]
- Invasion by sigo Hux was seated at the long durasteel table in the Steadfast’s largest conference room, Enric Pryde on his left and Mitaka presenting his findings to the group standing on his right, when he felt it: Ren’s hands on his chest, running hot down his skin below his uniform. [E, 2.9k words, no warnings, pwp, bottom hux & top kylo, force sex, semi-public sex]
- In His Grasp by @cosleia Kylo Ren doesn't understand why General Hux is shirking his duty over a simple injury. When he tries to find out, though, he learns more than he bargained for...about the general, and about himself. [M, 4.1k words, post-tlj, pining, hand-feeding]
- Heat Sink by @sparrows-trashcan Kylo Ren is an omega but so is General Hux. While Hux doesn't mind everyone knowing that his preference is limited to male omegas Kylo Ren is shamed to feel the same. Everything changes after the Starkiller incident: Kylo Ren is in heat and there is only one person on the Finalizer who could possibly help him... [E, 4.2k words, no warnings, omega hux & omega kylo, smut]
- Distraction by @kyluxtrashpit Kylo needs a distraction from his hopeless pining over his co-commander, who he's sure he can never have. So he turns to the Knights of Ren to keep his mind - and body - busy. When Hux walks in on the events, however, Kylo learns that perhaps his feelings aren't a lost cause after all. [E, 3.6k words, no warnings, kylo/knights of ren, group sex]
- Between the Stars by Kittens The Finalizer's medical team does not want to deal with Kylo Ren. When he ends up injured during a mission, it's up to Hux to take care of him. It's not exactly what Hux is good at, but for Kylo it means everything. [T, 3.9k words, no warnings, hurt/comfort, bathing]
- Switch Up, Love Eternal by @onewhositswiththeturtles When Ren damages consoles aboard the Finalizer during a tantrum, Hux summons him for some much-deserved discipline. Perhaps there would be some hope for Ren learning the error of his ways if he wasn't such a whore for punishment. [E, 3.4k words, no warnings, dom/sub switching, smut]
- Across the Stars (To Find You) by Lady_Faulkner While on a mission for Snoke, Kylo Ren gets kidnapped by pirates and it's up to General Hux to track him down and rescue him before he's sold on the black market. Along the way, Hux discovers that his feelings of hatred for Kylo Ren have been masking another emotion altogether. [E, 10.9k, no warnings, kidnapping, hurt kylo]

- The One with the Eggs by sigo Hux turned on his heel, but hardly made it two steps before running straight into Kylo Ren. He knew his face betrayed his dismay. He didn’t have time for this. “I apologize, Ren, but I must be on my way.” Hux stepped to the side and Ren stepped in front of him again. Hux shivered as he felt another dropping sensation inside himself. This time the ‘drop’ completed its path — the inside of his pants was wet, cold gel trickling at a glacial pace down his thighs. Of course, that was nothing compared to what lay ahead. “Ren,” He said sharply. His voice was higher, raising in pitch the way it always did when he was panicked. “I am ill. - Unexpected Avenues by @sinceyouaskedmeforataleof [WIP, Mitaka/Hux] No one wanted to take this particularly grisly task, but Dopheld is glad it fell to him when he realises that all is not as it seems. Jen, my soul requires physical affection prompt #14 play wrestling, Adam and baby du Mortains (or!!! whoever you want!!! this is just the thought that popped in my head) ❤️ (-@wayhavenots)
thank you for requesting this one! It’s a little cute baby du mortain fluff but I couldn’t help but get a little angsty at the end. I haven’t written Adina in a while, so thank you!
author’s note: thank you for the request @wayhavenots. this takes place in the same universe as cottage by the sea and bucket list. it does have a bittersweet ending, so you have been warned and i hope you enjoy! copyright: all characters, except my oc detective, are owned by mishka jenkins @seraphinitegames. series/pairing: the wayhaven chronicles – adam du mortain x f!detective (regina bishop) rating/warnings: 14+; fluff and angst based on/prompt: physical affection prompts // 14. play wrestling word count: ~900 summary: adam reminisces on the times he used to play wrestle with his children.
“papa, i got you!”
regina looked up from where she was playing with philip on the porch to see jacques latching himself on to adam’s leg, his five-year-old sister mimicking the motion on adam’s other leg.
adam smiled and gave her a wink before pretending to stumble backward until he was laying on his back. the children climbed on top of him, doing their best to “pin” his arms down.
“yes, you ‘got’ me. when did you get so strong?”
cecilia grinned, a large gap showing where her two front teeth should be. “me too, papa?”
“yes, you too, my darling,” adam said, curling his arm around her. she squealed and kicked her feet, trying to break out of adam’s grip.
jacques scrambled to sit on top of his father’s abdomen, raising his arms to flex. regina chuckled, knowing full well no one could ever hope to match adam’s strength.
“i’m going to be big and strong like you when i grow up, papa!”
adam chuckled. “but don’t grow up too fast, my son.”
he knew moments like this were fleeting, not just as a parent but because of his nature. he glanced over at regina, currently rocking philip to sleep in her arms as she paced the length of the porch. he knew, with a heaviness in his heart that in the blink of an eye, his entire world would disappear from the earth.
and there was nothing he could do about it.
even if he kept his eyes open for eternity.
instead, he turned back to his children, determined to focus on what he could do. which was to fill his heart with as many memories and happy moments as possible. and hope that when the time came, it would be enough to keep him warm.
many, many decades later
adam smiled up at his great-great grandchild, who was sitting on his chest and holding his face between their tiny hands.
he took note of how the mid-afternoon sun seemed to hit the golden highlights of their sandy-brown hair, softening the bright blue of their eyes that reminded him of his wife’s.
“pappy, will i be as big as you when i grow up?”
“if you work hard, jackie, you can be whatever you want to be,” he said, chuckling inwardly at the feeling of déjà vu.
over a lifetime ago he said something similar to a child once. if his memory served him right, it was at the wayhaven police station; the pathologist’s child. regina had found it hilarious at the time but later admitted she thought it was adorable.
“do you have to go already, pappy?” jackie pleaded as adam carefully stood up, giving them a tender kiss on the forehead before handing them to their parents.
“yes, i have to go see your great-nana. but i’ll come visit next week, alright?”
“okay, i love you pappy!”
adam paused at the gate to look back at his children (because no matter how many generations passed, they were all his children) waving at him. he gave a small wave back, trying not to dwell on how his heart felt both full and heavy as he made his way over to the cemetery on the other side of town, picking up a small bouquet of regina’s favorite flowers on the way.
each step he took on the cobblestone walkway was a slow and deliberate exercise in leaving his grief, however temporary, at the gate. he didn’t want to be overcome with sadness when he visited with her, because she deserved to know how many lives she touched and how much good her own life did, even generations later.
with every step forward he tried to think back only on the most joyful moments from the life they shared. and stories that would make her smile and laugh, even if it was at his expense.
he visualized the wall around his heart falling away, piece by piece, as he got closer to her grave until he felt completely exposed. he wanted to lay himself bare before her – a penance, perhaps, for holding so much back from her while they were together.
even at his best and most honest, he had still hidden away some of his most prominent fears – perhaps, because they all revolved around her. he also never mustered the courage to tell her how much he wanted to take back his word that he would respect her decision.
because he wanted her to stay.
to turn.
to choose forever in the truest sense of the word.
“you should’ve seen them,” he murmured, eyes shining with pride but glimmering with tears. “they’re so big now and curious. stubbornly so, like you.”
he knelt down on one knee to brush away the dirt on the inscription and clear away the weeds, frowning as he realized it had been a while since he last visited.
“i wish you were here, my love. i miss you.”
he placed the bouquet in front of her headstone, removing the withered one from his last visit before standing back up.
he had long since stopped promising to visit again soon, having broken those promises many times over when it was too difficult for him to face that she was gone forever.
at least while he was busy with work, he could distract himself and let the time pass him by. but he was trying to visit with his children more often, and there were some parts of his reality he couldn’t ignore anymore. so he needed to find a different way to cope.
as he walked out of the cemetery, he let the wall around his heart rebuild itself, brick by brick. hopefully, the wall would last until next time.

Why I think Feysand were OOC in ACOSF
I hope that no one misunderstands from the title but let me say this is a 100% PROfeysand post. so if you hated feysand even before acosf, then this post isn't for you.
So i've seen a lot of interesting theories about feysand's and in particular rhys' behaviour and choices throughout acosf. and while alot of them seemed possible and may have been the case canonically speaking, even as a feysand stan i just couldn't seem to wrap my head around some of the things they said and did in the book. they just both seem OOC, its the only pausible explanation for me.
To understand why feysand were OOC in the book we have to look at this through a narrative perspective. as in we have to ask why would the author write the character/s in this way?
a quick overview of what a character arc is
so there can be a lot of variations of a character arc in a story but the basics is as follows (how does the character go from point 'a' to point 'b'):
the 'big lie' - the views/beliefs/actions the character has at the start which will be challenged throughout the story (this is point 'a')
the 'incident' - a plot point in which starts development of the character. something that spurs the character into action, this most ofter happens when they are placed in an unfamiliar situation. this usuallyy is the intial challenge to their 'big lie'. at this point the story will move forward and theres no going back.
the midpoint - the character changes conciously or subconciously, they start to recognise their own flaws in the 'big lie'.
world collaspes - this is usually on the heels of a victory, the character reaches the lowest point in their journey. they finally confront 'the big lie' and forces to stop this deception they inflict on themselves. they can destroy it or it will destroy them.
the climax - the reason for the story. the reason why the character had to take this journey in order to get to this moment. the moment that the character will decide once and for all whether they will go forward to point 'b' or regress back to point 'a'
the resolution - the character reaches point 'b'. their view/beliefs/actions have changed, they no longer believe in the 'big lie'.
So obvisouly the main character in acosf is Nesta. What sjm does in her books is that every plot point and development of secondary characters is in service to the arc of the main character. None of the character's outside of Nesta have their own development. Not even Cassian, any sort of changes or developments he undergoes is in service to Nesta (a complete missed opportunity for Cassian but that a whole other point). And before anyone tries to say otherwise, you can have development for characters even if they are secondary ones (and for a book that is 800+ pages long it is definitely possible). An example is with his can also be seen with Gwyn. Her leaving the library for the first time was a huge moment for the character, but she did so, in order to comfort Nesta after her big fight with Cassian. It was also so that Nesta, Gwyn and Emerie could all be together in Illyria so they could be kidnapped and forced to enter the blood rite (where the final showdown occurs with Nesta and the villan).
so what has this got to do with feysand and why are they OOC?
In fact the entire plot with feyre's pregnancy was made to give chracter developments for Nesta. There was nothing written in the book that suggested any developments for feyre and rhys. it did nothing for them. Nesta needed to become central to the story and the only way sjm thought to keep feyre side lined was to make her pregrnant. It was also just lazy writing and world building bc there is no way that rhys would have though of this when he and feyre were trying for a baby.
SIN #1 The Shields
Rhys practicing shields (shield thats doesn't even allow anyone to even touch her) on feyre, which she just allows. the book explains because of the fact that there is more danger to her now that she's pregnant. Narratively, this would make sense if there is a payoff. Like later in the story if feyre was in physical danger and the shield saves her or if the shield became a detriment to her in some way. But no nothing like this happens. Rhys 'practices' the shield on her and thats it. Rhys, who was the same person that trusted feyre enough defend herself against the weaver. It was totally out of character that he would shield her to the point that Cassian can't even kiss her on the cheek (sounds familiar huh). and the same goes for feyre, who has no problem with this (*cough* tamlin locking her up *cough*). Thats is some OOC behaviour.
So what were the point of the shields? well since sjm made it canon that fae can smell when a female is pregnant, the biggest way they came into play was in the scene when rhys lifted it long enough so that everyone could sense that that feyre was pregnant. And It could have been just that, feyre and rhys were expecting a baby, and Nesta can go along with her development, they did not need to intersect. But it did, and we'll come back to that later. This scene is a lighthearted moment in the book, one of the rare few where all the characters are happy and celebrating a good thing. acofas we knew that rhys and feyre decided to try for a baby, and seeing it pay off here was enjoyable for the readers.
But what else does this scene do? through Nesta's perspective, we can read her thoughts on it, and though she doesn't reveal much its an important character moment for her. the readers can see that she can feel happiness for someone else beyond the self-loathing she guards herself with, it shows that she is a character worth rooting for.
SIN #2 Rhys concealing the dangers of the pregnancy from feyre
oof this one is a doosey. this was the most baffling thing to come out of acosf for me. there is literally no reason or explanation that would make sense for rhys to lie to feyre like that. It offers no development for the two character it affects the most: rhys and feyre. there no fallout on rhys' end for lying to her, and there is no turmoil for feyre such as falling into depair like we told she would (the whole reason that rhys was hiding it in the first place).
When Nesta finds out that the pregnancy was most likely going to kill feyre and the baby. instead of Nesta disagreeing and urging Rhys to tell feyre, she doesn't say anything and forms a temporary truce with him, a character she has always had conflict with. It also serves as the incident that allows Nesta to have her 'world collapse' moment in her character arc. How else was Nesta going to realise what a shitty person is was being if she didn't do something so absolutely shitty? in a fit of rage, Nesta reveals to feyre that the pregnancy was going to kill both her and the baby. she get taken away on a hike in illyria (because???) and she reaches rock bottom after she comes to term with what she did. the story is taken away from velaris and the inner circle, and any conflict and resolution that happens between feyre and rhys, if it even happened at all, happens off page. again furthering my point about the pregnancy having no impact on the two characters is affects the most. After Nesta's fleeting moment of enlightenment, and her swordplay sex marathon with Cassian (urgh) she returns to velaris and nothing has changed between rhys and feyre. there isn't really much of a development with Nesta's relationship with feyre, their 'reconciliation' occurs all of less than one page and doesn't even happen out loud, just mind to mind. Now that Nesta has had her important character moment, nothing else matters (again lazy writing).
SIN #3 Everyone dies
ok so yes everyone has said their two cents about this and i agree with it. Feyre and nyx had to die so that Nesta could have her climax moment. It is the climax of the story since it is the big story development right before the resolution. and about the bargain - feysand decided in acofas that they were going to try for a baby. meaning that it was after this decision that they struck the bargain that they would die together. so at some point they would have thought of the fact they would have a child/children when the both die. im sorry but do they seem like the kind of ppl that would make a suicide pact even if it meant leaving their children behind? TOTALLY OOC for me. and i dont know i guess also the stakes weren't high enough with just the threat of feyre and nyx dying.
So feyre and nyx are dead and rhys will soon follow and Nesta intervenes to save them. Its also a self-sacrificing moment bc she has to give up her powers in order to do this... Showing that she does truely love her family and the depths of her powers. (seriously idc how you stan or hate how does anyone this good book?). don't doubt that in the future books sjm will find a way for Nesta to get her powers back (whatever they are (pure death WHAT DOES THAT MEAN???))
So Nesta saves the day, everyone is fine and nothing has changed except Nesta is nice now probably. the end.
welp this got way longer that i expected but anyways long story short there was nothing about the pregnancy that gave development to feysand characters and it was all for the development of the main character.
i don't claim acosf!feysand and sjm better fucking leave them alone in the rest of the books.
#acotar#acosf#anti acosf#rhys#rhysand#pro rhysand#feyre#pro feyre#feysand#pro feysand#nesta#this is not an anti nesta post#at least i dont think it is#but this is definitely a fucking anti sjm post#anti sjm

Till The Sun Is in the Sky Fanfic
Title: Till The Sun is in the Sky Fanfic
Summary: Roman is a genie who has granted wishes for over a millennia. The only reason he’d be eager to serve his next master is for a chance to briefly escape the lamp’s darkness. Not for a chance at freedom--for that’s just wishful thinking and he knows what that all entails.
Or at least that’s his assumption until he meets Patton, the newest master of his lamp.
Pairing: platonic royality
Word-Count: 3.9k
Warnings: Crying, Fear, Hurt/Comfort, Angst with a Happy Ending
This set in the same ‘verse as When the Blazing Sun Is Gone but you don’t need to read that fic to understand this one. @delimeful requested seeing Roman’s/Logan’s role in the AU as part of my follower milestone celebration and so I went with Roman. Also huge thanks to @stillebesat who beta-read two different drafts of this fic and offered valuable input, I appreciate it! <3
-
He didn't know how long it had been since his last Master had thrown the lamp into the sea. It didn't matter really. Minutes, years, centuries...it didn't. Because he knew his next master would be the same as the last six hundred. Selfish, full of empty promises of freedom that never came to pass.
No, the only reason why he would ever be eager to come out of the lamp to serve his six hundredth and one master would be for those precious moments to get out of the darkness.
Some of his more inquisitive masters would ask him what it felt like to have one’s soul crammed into a lamp.
He always laughed it off and made a joke about how it made for a great napping place.
But the truth was far from it. He knew it was silly, but he feared the darkness. He feared its loneliness, feared no one would ever find his lamp again and he’d be stuck there forever.
He never told them how many times he uselessly fought against the magic barriers, hoping beyond hope to find a defect in the spell that bound him there. He didn’t tell them how much he feared them being the last master he ever had—not because they freed him but because his lamp never found another master to serve. Worse yet, his lamp shattering.
His soul was bound to the lamp and if it broke--then his soul would split into a thousand pieces along with it. Suffice to say, it was not a happy fate and not something happy to dwell on.
So he sang instead. His voice filling up the lamp, bouncing all around him. He could pretend someone was with him, that way, singing alongside him. He sang the few songs he knew and then some. He made up songs, even, about anything his mind could dwell on. He was halfway through singing about a gallant knight when a pair of hands made contact with the lamp.
A new master; both relief and trepidation hit him at once. Relief that he’d be free from the darkness once more. Trepidation in knowing that it was only a fleeting temporary respite from it.
That was quite alright. After all, his new master was probably someone in great need of his assistance—they always were. The lamp magic sought out those who were plagued by horrible life circumstances. He would be the knight in shining armor to them, like he’d been to many others before.
For that was his true purpose in life and not freedom. That was just wishful thinking—and he knew all of what that entailed.
With a shroud of red mist, he rose up in front of his new master. All of which was entirely for the sheer dramatics of it. He enjoyed putting on a good show and the adrenaline that came along with it.
“Greetings!” He boomed, waving his arms around in a grand gesture, “I am a great and powerful genie—and I am here to make all your dreams come true!”
The human gawked at him, slack-jawed. His brown eyes bulged from behind his glasses, much like a cartoon character. There was a crack in one of the glasses’ lenses and upon closer look, the glasses appeared to be practically held together by tape.
The man’s clothing appeared to be in a similar disheveled state—unraveling hems, holes in his shoes, scuff marks. The cardigan tied around his neck looked hardly wearable. Lying at the man’s feet was a blue backpack that the genie wouldn’t doubt contained all of his worldly belongings.
The lamp sought out the unfortunate and if there was one constant in any century, it was poverty.
“You’re…really a genie?” The human asked, pressing his eyebrows together.
“In the flesh.” The Genie winked.
He was well aware of what a fine specimen he was to behold. Flowing locks of russet hair, eyes that glimmered like emeralds, a voluptuous figure. Clothed in only the finest cloth that the eleventh century had to offer. Centuries of existence in the lamp had not diminished his beauty in the slightest.
If there was one thing he could take pleasure in, it was the awe humans gave him before they decided demanding for wishes. It usually lasted for only about five seconds. But during those five seconds, he could pretend that they were actually ecstatic to see him.
“What’s your name?”
He startled at those words.
“Pardon?” He asked, tilting his head backwards.
The last thing the Genie had been expecting, was those words to come out of his mouth. No one ever bothered to ask for his name. It was as though they assumed their wish-granting cosmic vending machine had no name. Or was indeed a living being with thoughts and feelings for that matter. They always started demanding rules and stipulations for their wishes as fast as they could.
“I’m sorry!” The human cried, wringing his hands together, “that was rude of me to ask without introducing myself first.”
He held out a hand, beaming, “I’m Patton! What’s your name?”
“I…” He stared down at the man’s hand, “My name?”
“Oh,” Patton’s eyes widened, “do you not have a name?”
The Genie looked away. He did once have a name, long ago before he inhabited the lamp. He couldn’t remember it. A strained, lilted laugh broke from his lips, not assuaging Patton’s concerns in the slightest.
How could he forget his own name? Names were important—special. Names had power. Names were a person’s identity. How could he let that damn lamp take something so precious away from him? It’d already taken everything else away—what more could it take?
“I can’t seem to recall it,” He shook his head, before desperately trying to change the subject, “But enough about my fabulous self! I’m here to grant you not one, not two, but three! Three wishes of immeasurable power! Say the magic word, and I’ll spin your dreams into reality.”
He expected Patton to forget the name nonsense entirely at the mention of wishes. Surely, the man had unfulfilled desires—everyone always possessed those. Instead, the man slowly shook his head.
“I can help you find a new name, if you’d like.” He offered, a smile softly framing his face.
The Genie blinked, “You wish to give me a new name?”
He could not make heads nor tails of this strange human. He scarcely knew Patton for a single minute, but his aura oozed nothing but positivity. Still, it was an odd waste of a wish, if you asked him. He’d hate to see someone so good and in need of his cosmic help squander a wish like that.
“No,” Patton said, laughing, “I want to help you find a new name.”
Patton sat down on the beach, the lamp by his side. The human looked up at him and patted the space next to him. Reluctantly, the Genie joined him.
“How does the name Daniel sound to you?” Patton asked.
Daniel. One of his more unpleasant masters went by that name. The genie made a face before shaking his head.
“That’s okay! What about Philip then?”
“Phiiiilip…” He drew out the consonants, testing how they felt against the roof of his mouth, “What do you think, dear Patton? Do I look like a Philip to you?”
“Well, you’re very princely-looking, and I’d say Philip is a very princely name!” The man giggled, “but as long as you love it—I’ll love it as well!”
The Genie hesitated. As much as he liked the name—it didn’t quite scream him. It didn’t encompass his whole being. Philip felt as tight and constraining as his lamp. The genie could lie and tell Patton he liked it just to move on from this whole naming business. His purpose here was supposed to be focused on the wish-bearer and not him, the wish-granter.
However, as he looked upon Patton’s earnest gaze he found himself unable to lie to him.
“I am afraid that I’m not entirely in love with the idea of Philip.” He admittedly with a great sigh.
“That’s alright! We just gotta keep trying then!” Patton declared, undeterred.
He continued listing off names, but none of them seemed to satisfy the Genie. The latter of whom grew despondent that they’d never find the perfect name. There were millions of names in the world, yet none of them appealed to him. He voiced this to Patton, who refused to give up hope that easily and urged him to keep trying.
“Hmm…oh! What about Roman?” Patton asked, “I knew a guy back in high school named Roman. He did theatre.”
Something sparked within the hollow cavity of the Genie’s chest.
“Theatre? As in acting out a story in front of an audience?” The Genie asked, his eyes lit bright with wonder.
He’d never seen a play before. His masters never bothered taking him to events like that. Instead he’d remain in their household, his lamp sitting on a shelf or hidden in a cabinet. Like a jar of quarters to use on a rainy day. He could only manifest within twenty-five yards around his lamp, leaving him unable to sneak off and enjoy something like a theatre show.
But what little he heard of them reminded him greatly of the bards of his time. They used to travel all over, singing sweetly in poetic verse of great heroes and terrifying monsters. He’d always loved watching a bard perform. He almost ran off and became a bard himself before he ended up stuck inside the lamp.
“Yup! He played Lumiere in our production of Beauty and the Beast.”
The names of the character and story were unfamiliar to him. But the Genie could tell by Patton’s phrasing that it had been an important role.
“Roo-man,” He tried, liking how it sounded on his lips, “Roman, Roman, Romaaaaaaaaaaan!”
Patton giggled as the Genie held out the name for as long as he could.
Roman. It was bold, it was brash, it was perfect. Not too snug, not too loose—it fit him just right.
“Well then,” He said, clearing his throat, “I’d be honored to go by the name of such a great bard!”
“I’m happy to hear that!” Patton beamed, “We should go celebrate!”
The human stood up, stuffing the lamp into his backpack in the process. He offered a hand towards the Genie—or rather Roman.
“Celebrate?” Roman questioned, as he accepted Patton’s hand, “Don’t you want your three wishes—"
“That can wait for later,” Patton said as he pulled Roman onto his feet with ease, “what’s important right now is celebrating your new name—with ice cream! I know just the place!”
“Forgive me for asking, but what is ice cream?”
“You don’t know what ice cream is?” Patton gasped, a determined look settling onto his features, “we’ll definitely have to fix that!”
He took hold of Roman’s hand—and marched towards the direction of the ice cream stand. Roman, bemused by the human, laughed as he allowed himself to be tugged along by Patton. He didn’t know why Patton was so concerned about his wellbeing but he found it a nice change from the norm.
Patton chattered along the way, mainly about ice cream and puns relating to the icy dessert and to other things.
“What did the popsicle say to his sonsicle in a crowd?” Patton asked, already snickering at his own joke.
“What?”
“He said, stick with me kid!” Patton burst into a fit of giggles, and Roman followed suit. Admittedly a lot of the contextual humor of Patton’s puns were lost on him but there was something contagious about Patton’s cheery disposition. You couldn’t help but want to laugh along and feel about a bit of that happiness glow in your lungs.
For those brief seconds of laughter, Roman felt human again. He’d have to treasure this feeling--coveting it once he inevitably ended up in the darkness of the lamp once more.
The sun set in the horizon as they reached their destination; a brilliant splash of crimson red with streaks of golden orange and lilac purple. There were a few customers already in line at the ice cream stand. Cheery music blared. Where, Roman had no clue. He could not see a band nearby. Perhaps it was magic?
“Hey um,” Patton said, ducking his head a bit, “mind if we split a bowl? I’ll let you pick out the flavor. You should go with vanilla—it’s a classic! But, uh you can get whatever you’d like!”
“Patton…” Roman frowned, “I could wish into existence a whole ice cream shop of your own if you truly wanted it. You don’t have to waste money on me.”
“No, I don’t have to,” Patton said with a determined glint in his eyes, “But I want to.”
Roman gawked at him, stunned. What was this human? People normally expected genies to do things for them, not the other way around! When it came time to order, Roman merely pointed to the vanilla as Patton had suggested.
There were tables set up next to the ice cream stand where customers could consume their ice cream. But Patton shook his head, telling Roman he knew a much better place.
“It’s a place my friend Virgil and I like to visit,” Patton said, “It’s nice and quiet, unlike most of the city. The noise can be too much sometimes, y’know?”
This peaceful location happened to be a bench in the middle of a park. Trees gracefully arched over it, dressed in the beginnings of autumn colors. Orange, yellow, red. A warm glowing yellow light emanated from the lamppost beside the bench.
“You can have the first taste of the ice cream,” Patton told him as they settled onto the bench. Roman obliged him, dipping his spoon a little in the white substance and bringing it to his mouth. He blinked. It was colder than he expected. But not unpleasantly so. It was a smooth, sweet texture.
“What do you think?” Patton asked, practically bouncing in his seat.
“It’s--it’s absolutely divine!” Roman exclaimed, his eyes flickered down to the ice cream, “May I…?”
“Of course!” Patton grinned. Roman took another spoonful, savoring the taste longer this time. They took turns finishing it off as they continued to converse.
Roman wasn’t used to talking. Sure, he talked plenty over the centuries, but his conversations with his masters revolved strictly around wish-granting. Mundane conversations about the weather were anything but mundane to the genie.
“What’s your favorite animal?” Patton asked, swinging his legs back and forth in a careless manner.
“Dogs—they are lovable, loyal creatures and mankind is undeserving of their affections.” Roman declared.
“Dogs are my favorite too!” Patton giggled, “Oh! And so are cats, horses, lizards, lions and tigers and bears—oh my! Elephants, giraffes, hippos—”
“So all of them are your favorite, I take it?”
“I guess you could say that,” Patton sheepishly grinned, “I wanted to be a veterinarian be—before—”
The human inhaled shakily, the smile slipping off his face. Instead of continuing, he stared down into the mostly empty plastic ice cream bowl. Something obviously happened in Patton’s past that upset him. It wasn’t Roman’s place to pry—but it didn’t mean he couldn’t help in the only way he knew best; magic. In all his centuries as a genie, he’s never met anyone deserving of it than Patton.
The man had been the first in a long while to treat Roman like his thoughts and feelings actually mattered. Like the genie was actually...human.
“You could still be a veterinarian, if you so badly wished,” Roman spoke softly, “Your every wish is my command.”
Patton flinched, looking more distressed than comforted by Roman’s words.
“Roman please, I can’t do that—”
“Why not?” Roman said, “you are my master—you can make any wish you’ve ever desired.”
“Roman, I’m not your master.” Patton choked.
“Of course you are,” Roman tilted his head, “you are the keeper of my lamp. What else would you be?”
“A friend?” Patton suggested, “Roman, please I don’t want to force you to do anything you don’t want to do.”
“This is different,” Roman said fervently, grasping hold of Patton’s hands, “this I offer to you freely for you are the most worthy keeper of my lamp. You must have unfulfilled desires, something, anything I can grant.”
Patton stared at Roman, his face void of expression. Several times he opened his mouth before abruptly closing it. As if thinking better of what he was about to say.
“Please.” Roman pressed further.
His heart rattled against his chest, wanting badly to escape its cage as he did with his lamp. Like the latter, it was a pointless venture. As long as his lamp remained intact so would his soul. Unless of course it shattered, and with it his soul into a thousand pieces. His psyche splintered and fractured, too broken to put back together again. Like Humpty Dumpty except worse for it was a living death, one inescapable. Yet it was a fate that was inevitable and also something he shouldn’t be dwelling on at the moment.
“There is…” Patton hesitated, “one desire I have.”
“Say it,” Roman said as he bowed his head, not daring to look at the human, “Speak it into existence and it shall be yours.”
It was going to hurt, he knew this. The genie wasn’t the true wish-granter, all the magic they possessed came from the lamp itself. The magic only used his form as a mere conduit. Because that was all a genie was—a damn puppet to his masters’ wills.
Roman brought this curse upon himself—he wanted immeasurable power and he attained it. Except, it was never his will to wield such power. Nay, only his masters possessed it. Only their wishes and not his would be granted. It’d be this way forever and ever, because everyone always cared about their happy endings and not his own.
Even Patton, once he saw the immeasurable power that surged forth from even the simplest of wishes. Roman wouldn’t blame him for it. The human has already given him more than what he’s ever deserved.
Patton squeezed Roman’s hands. It took every ounce of Roman’s willpower not to sneak a glance up at him. He had to remain strong for whatever wish Patton threw at him. In the short time he’d spent with Patton, he didn’t get off the vibe of a frivolous wisher. He dealt with plenty of those over the years. Ones who used the wishes in willy-nilly ways, without any forethought behind them.
No, he’d probably be practical. He’d wish for money, or perhaps a mistake in the past to be reversed. Those were always tricky ones. They didn’t always end in the way humans believed they would.
“Roman,” Patton began, “I wish to free you, the genie, from your lamp.”
The genie leapt off the bench as if electrocuted, hands clumsily detangling themselves from Patton’s own. The lamp’s magic roared in his ears, swelling inside him like a great storm. He gaped at the human, his heart bursting out of his chest and into his throat.
“P-patton, mind repeating that?” He gasped.
“I wish to free you the genie from your lamp.” Patton said once more, his voice firm and unbreaking.
This time he couldn’t hold off the wish. A bright red light enveloped him like a supernova explosion. Magic consumed him, rippling through every fiber of his being. A warmth fell across him, one that he hadn’t felt in a long, long while. A great shattering noise occurred. The light died down as he looked to see the lamp had spilled out of Patton’s pack, glittering underneath the lamppost, in pieces.
Breath heaving, he fell to his knees, touching the pieces. The lamp had broken and he was still here, whole and complete and free.
“Why?” He stared down at the broken lamp, quivering, “I--I don’t understand. You had three wishes. You could’ve had so much—all the wealth and fame you could ever desire!”
“But I didn’t want that,” Patton protested, resting a hand on Roman’s shoulder, “not if it came from a wish you were involuntarily bound to serve no matter what. That isn’t fair. Everyone deserves the freedom of choice. Including you.”
Roman laughed. Except it wasn’t quite a laugh. More of a strangled, gargled croak than anything else. He pressed his hands into his face, shutting his eyes as he tried to block out the dizzying nausea sweeping through him.
After six-hundred masters and a millennia inside the lamp, Roman knew a lot about the freedom of choice. His masters employed it with how they chose to use his wishes. Flaunting it so arrogantly in his face. The wishes were self-serving for most. Sometimes they used it to better others’ situations. But never his own, despite many promising to free him. Because at the end of that third wish, they’d walk away while he’d once more get trapped inside the lamp.
Over and over again, they chose to not free him. Except Patton. He chose to free Roman on his very first wish. For as long as he’d dreamt of this moment, of being free from the lamp, he never expected it to actually happen. It was just a foolish fantasy, too abstract to become reality. Not to mention in this manner. He had imagined a master would free him after he’d proven himself worthy with a great feat of magic. How could Patton think he was deserving of this gift?
He laughed weirdly again. This time it hurt his vocal chords.
“Roman?” Patton asked.
He responded with a noise, halfway resembling a hiccup and a shriek. A gentle set of arms enveloped him, pulling him closer until his forehead rested against a warm chest. A hug? Was Patton hugging him?
“It’s okay, kiddo,” Patton murmured, ruffling a hand through his hair, “let it all out.”
Kiddo. Roman wanted to snort. He was a millennia older than Patton, he wasn’t exactly a child. Except at those words, he bawled like one as he realized that those were sobs from before. Not laughter. Roman couldn’t remember the last time he cried. Just like he couldn’t remember a time before being a genie.
Who was he, without the lamp? For as much as he hated it, it’d been a part of him. It defined him and the purpose of his existence. Now he was free of it, free to be his own person, with his own wishes and desires. But he didn’t know the first step of what that looked like.
It was like he was thrown into a raging ocean of confusion and turmoil. Treading aimlessly, desperately hoping for a piece of driftwood to grab a hold on. Something that could anchor him, keep him afloat.
“P-patton--” He whispers, voice hoarse from crying, “can I--can I choose to be your friend?”
The human had suggested it earlier. Surely, he meant it still? It was quiet for a few seconds. Enough to cause Roman to doubt himself. But then the man who unbelievably granted him his freedom hugged him tighter.
“Of course, Roman,” Patton told him, “I’d be honored.”
With a sniffle, Roman’s hands fell from his face as he threw his arms around Patton to fiercely return the embrace. A few more ugly sobs wracked his throat. How was it that Patton was the one honored to be his friend when it was the opposite?
Roman hardly knew what being free looked like. But he did know he’d do anything to protect Patton, to preserve this kind, selfless spark that rested in the human’s soul.
As he dwelt encircled by Patton’s loving arms, the last slivers of the sun’s glow faded at last, dousing them in darkness. But for once, he didn’t find himself afraid of it.
#thomas sanders#sanders sides#patton sanders#roman sanders#kat writes#i tried to get virgil in this fic#but pls dont imagine vampire virge getting both jealous and concerned that patton is replacing him#or that roman (not wanting to lose his new friend) accuses him being a monster and sees him as a threat to patton#and poor patton being in the middle of it#:))))

for the character headcanons ask, tim or steph
i ended up doing both LMAO
so for Tim:
A (realistic headcanon): i will stand by this being realistic but TIM CONTINUING TO SKATEBOARD! like okay yes in canon he only used redboard like twice, and once he had his car back he didn’t really rely on it, but he put the time into learning how to and really enjoyed it! i think it would be fun to see him do it more and like i think steph could also skate with him (altho honestly she has more roller skate energy to me but they could still hang out at a skatepark together) i also have this idea for a fic im at some point going to write of Damian finding redboard and Tim being like ‘oh i can show u how to use that-‘ and him being like ‘NO i will do it on my own’ but eventually it becomes a whole bonding thing for them
B (hilarious): other people joke about this a lot but Tim skateboarding around Wayne Enterprises will NEVER cease to amuse me. just the general chaos of a seventeen year old in a power position like that. I think like Lucius and Tam would keep record of stupid shit he does (skateboarding in the office, Interesting fashion choices, the mountain of mugs and takeout containers that build on his desk, his use of glitter gel pens on official documents, threats to pull a seto kaiba and make WE’s primary goals be trading card related, etc) and make a lil scrapbook to give him on his 21st birthday or something when he’s like Slightly More of an adult
C (heart-crushing): Young Justice being Tim’s first friends he can feel real around that he doesn’t think are going to just be temporary. like... i’ve done a lot of rambling about Tim and again we know he’s a kid who grew up going from boarding school to boarding school, he could make friends easily enough but they were very... fleeting. they weren’t meant to last and he went into it knowing that. even though at the start of the group he couldn’t tell them everything, I feel like Young Justice were just the people he eventually was able to be himself the most around, since he didn’t need to hide being Robin. (again him needing to hide being Tim for a while definitely created some distance, but it was very different than hiding the whole hero life from people he knew at home and at school) and then ya know the core four group moving onto the titans together further solidifying this sense of ‘we are a group who can get through stuff together’... until it all falls the fuck apart after Kon dies. and Tim & Cassie have their weird bad coping things. and Bart dies. i think for Tim it would just be so crushing to have the first group he was able to consider being more permanent fall apart like that (not to mention his dad and steph dying around the same time on top of it- being two of the other types of relationships [familial and a romantic partner] that had more permanence to him) and even when people come back and bonds heal, that sense of stability would just forever be shattered, he lost them once and knows that it could happen again and that fear would always be there in the back of his mind
D (canon is a coward and won’t): that he is bisexual LMAO
aaand now Steph
A (realistic headcanon): alright this is kinda canon related but okay. we have seen MULTIPLE alternate versions of Steph with really short hair (future state, that time she imagined herself as nightwing, earth-3) so i really feel like by current-ish canon she’s already thinking about chopping her hair off, like it’s one of those ideas that just every now and then she’ll see someone with super short hair and be like oh... i want that... but never really go through with it (like she’s had some kinda short looks preboot but i think the shortest was like a bob. im talking pixie cut here) and like im imagining maybe after some mission her hair gets caught on something or even burned or idk and she just says fuck it and her, Cass and Tim get back to one of their apartments/a safehouse after patrol and cut her hair in the bathroom at like 4am (yes im aware i place many situations in the middle of the night in the bathroom with friends... [like that timkon fic i wrote a bit ago] its just such a special setting okay) like Cass with the scissors Tim’s holding up a reference pic Steph found on pinterest. it looks great once it’s done
B (hilarious): the eggplant vs purple thing. i think that now in this post death metal world of dc, where everyone’s remembering things from before the reboot, steph should have a small mental breakdown about how she betrayed her old self by rallying behind the color purple (‘enemy of crime and people who hate purple!’) vs how she used to be so insistent her color scheme was eggplant (‘its eggplant. purple would look stupid’). everyone else is having their brains break because of like conflicting memories of their traumas (and she’s got that goin on too, dont get me wrong, she’ll get to freaking out about that later) but steph is just sitting there staring at a color wheel trying not to cry
C (heart-crushing): i’ve seen some fics explore this a little but i think she’d end up doing a lot of thinking about her baby that she gave up for adoption. like that was something she experienced so young and i feel that would just always be a lurking thought in her mind, where is the baby? is she happy? gotham’s a dangerous city, there’s a lot to be afraid about there. Not that she wouldn’t already because she is just a caring big sister type of person, but I think Steph looking out for all the kids in Gotham (especially once she’s batgirl) in some small part could tie back to wanting to make sure her kid is safe out there wherever she ended up. (additionally since she had a rough upbringing with her whole dad situation she just especially is protective over kids anyways. Sometimes I think she might get kinda insecure about it… maybe even question herself about why she’s saving people, is it because she genuinely cares or is it something more selfish? it’s definitely a self doubt i could see manifesting)
D (canon is a coward and won’t) not to be repetitive but also that she is bi i will stand by this

MLQC Dictionary Prompts: 'ephemeral' + comfort + kiro (I hope this is how it works aaaa, I love your writing!)
e·phem·er·al. adj.
(from the ancient Greek, ephēmeros. lasting only a day.)
he’s sprawled silly across her lap, the two of them about to fall from the couch from their fit of laughter when he realizes: he will never see this smile of hers again.
not this one. not this exact one, her head tipped back, eyes crinkled crescent moon shut, hair springing joyful and free from her slept-in bun, her thighs warm under his head and barely covered by the old hoodie of his she’s taken to wearing around the house as hers.
this is a moment that will fade, he realizes. soon, he won’t remember why they were laughing in the first place, won’t remember the particulars of the way the light through the window kissed her dimples, caught the edges of her dark hair, and spun it into gold.
much as he’ll try to capture it again in memory, in song, he’ll never have this again. not this smile.
not this laugh either. not the look in her eyes when her laughter’s finally subsided, and she brings her gaze back down to meet his. the love, the tenderness, the emotion he tries to best to capture in lyrics, the feeling that goes beyond words— the weight of it knocks the breath from his lungs even as she catches hers.
he’d heard once— in a science podcast that minutes later savin had demanded turned off— that the world our minds experience is already past, the present lost in the time it takes a feeling to travel from eyes, from nose, from lips, from ears and hands to brain,
and he wonders, briefly, bitterly, if this is what it means to love: to always lose. to be stuck in a moment past, forever chasing the footsteps of the present, no thought spared for the future. knowing it’ll still all slip like sand through his fingers in the end.
he wonders if this is why he’ll look out across a stadium of fans and always see cameras and not faces upturned in his direction, phones swaying to the melody, their flashlights poor substitute for starstruck, loving eyes. wonders if the crotchety old critics who scoff and say things like “put down your phone, live in the moment!” are the ones who’ve had it right all along.
how can you live in the moment, he wants to ask them, knowing it’s going to end?
how can you fault someone in love for wanting a moment to last forever? for wanting remembrance less faulty than memory, something physical, something to hold?
but, what makes moments like these special? what makes us want to hold onto them more than the rest? is there some unspeakable beauty known only through living it, breathing it, trying forever to live it again, in spite of how transient, in spite of how fleeting? or perhaps is it beautiful because of its temporary nature?
he could command the first. try and search for that je ne sais quoi in a memory brought to life again, unnatural, forced. love not given warm, given freely but demanded, cold and heartless. the thought makes bile rise in the back of his throat.
he decides it must be the second, or something approximating it.
because when he thinks about it, maybe love is not meant to be lived clinging onto past moments, onto the glitter and glamour of a first meeting made sparkling, made magic by the tragedy of it all, the thought prickling in the back of both your minds that no matter how enchanting this conversation is (this connection, this world created of just the two of you), it, like all beautiful things, like all moments, is meant to end.
love is not built on frozen snapshots from the past, on connections made once, remade into a reality larger than life by folding and unfolding a memory’s polaroid until your mind gilds over the worn edges and creates an idea of a person, an expectation that living, breathing humans, perfect in their imperfections, could never hope to become.
love is a choice, he thinks. (he concludes. he chooses.) love is knowing that a single moment may be a tragedy from the start, in how transient, in how fleeting. love is knowing that one day, this will inevitably end. (their time together. this happiness. their concert, this song they share.) knowing, and choosing the present moment and the moments to come anyways, despite the endings to come, despite how futile it all may seem because what’s one moment, perfectly preserved, against a lifetime more, no matter how messy the memory ends up, no matter how blurry and flawed?
he will never see this smile of hers again, he thinks. not this one.
not this exact one, not her with her head tipped back, eyes not quite shut, hair falling free and playful from her messy bun, her thighs soft under his head, half-covered by her old hoodie, the one he thinks was once his, the hoodie she’s taken to wearing around the house as hers,
but what’s one smile against a lifetime’s worth?
.
.
.
(love is a promise. love means maybe you won’t get to keep every memory perfectly, but instead, you’ll share many more to come.)

I've been enjoying the Time Lord Victorious series so far, and since I caught up with a lot of it recently and we’re about half-way through it, I thought I'd post a bunch of thoughts on it here together.
I’m fascinated by the idea of a Doctor Who series made up of lots of different interconnected media, which feels like a natural thing to do when you consider how much history the franchise has with so many different formats of storytelling. And it’s wild to me that, contrary to what I first assumed, it was actually conceived before the whole global pandemic thing happened; it felt like almost perfect timing to give Doctor Who fans something to think about during lockdown.
One of the series’ greatest shortcomings was its promotion, which seemed to consist entirely of the title and that one promo visual. The lack of a clear, simple, all-encompassing premise from the start means that I still see fans reacting to TLV with confusion. Using ‘Time Lord Victorious’ as the only promotion also feels a little misleading - I think many people imagined the series being an Evil Ten AU (similar to the timeline glimpsed in the Four Doctors comic), when really most of the content is either building up to that or just tangentially connected to it. On the other hand, the series was clearly lovingly designed for Who fans (who are all about piecing together timelines and consuming a large range of stories) instead of a wider audience, so the unclear promotion feels more like a miscalculation than a fatal error.
Defender of the Daleks: Titan’s comic is easily the weakest link of the series for me- it didn’t have a meaningful part of the series to fill, I was bothered by a lot of the page layouts, and it felt like a lot of it was made only for Dalek superfans. Well, I genuinely hope the Dalek superfans enjoyed it.
Monstrous Beauty: It’s really nice to see BBC give Nine some love in the series, and you can tell writers like Scott Gray and Steve Cole enjoyed writing for him and Rose. The extreme gothic aesthetic for the Dark Times, the Great Vampires, and the coffin ship is lots of fun, even if the story itself is a little straight-forward and meandering. Rassilon turning up felt very unnessecary to me, at this point I wish authors would leave the Time Lords’ founders alone unless they have something genuinely interesting to add. Admittedly, seeing the Cucurbites return and Nine make an explicit reference to the ‘90s Eight comics made my day. Y’all know I’m an Eight comics nerd.
Master Thief/Lesser Evils: Honestly, both of these stories left me a little confused to what actually happened in them, and what the point of them were. The first one didn’t even seem to tie in to TLV at all. Despite that, I’m really happy to see the Delgado Master and Ainley Master get some audios to themselves. Both characters were captured wonderfully by the stories and were a joy to listen to.
He Kills Me, He Kills Me Not: I was really surprised by this just being an out-and-out Western, but I loved it! Brian sticking close to his hostage while the other characters slowly pieced together what was going on and what they should do about it made for a very different kind of tension to the usual Who story. Brian’s explanation about killing with a thought made me properly nervous about him being around any other characters. I’m glad they got to do some non-formulaic stuff with Eight before the Daleks turned up at the end. Overall, the Daleks have a larger part in TLV than I’m happy with, since it makes it feel like the series is split between experimenting with new ideas and retreading old ground.
The Knight, The Fool and The Dead: The novels are definitely the heart of the Time Lord Victorious story, and so I’m very happy with the choice of authors for them. This first one was great. I really liked Ten’s characterisation of being at his limit but trying to continue on as normal and do what’s right.
His temporary companion Brian the Ood Assassin is every bit as fun as the concept sounds. I love how Brian doesn’t (usually) try to hide that he’s a merciless murder, but is still very polite and dresses in a tux. The little descriptions of him commanding a space fleet of mercenaries like a headwaiter running an expensive restaurant are hilarious. I can’t wait for more stories with him.
The villains of the piece, the Kotturuh, are surprisingly and delightfully eldritch, with their tentacles and their symbols in the sky. Not to mention their plans for the universe written on the cave walls of the planet that acts as a gateway between their cosmos and ours, writing which make people who look at it go mad. The Kotturuh, or Kotts, spread the effects of a natural lifespan to every species in the universe, ending an era of immortality for most of them.
This leads me to the heart of the story, and the premise of the series as a whole; is the Doctor doing the right thing by trying to stopping natural death from spreading in the Dark Times? But there’s a problem here. The concept of death being unnatural is one that TLV introduces to the Doctor Who universe without warning or really giving you space to process it. If all death by old age is something artificially added to the universe, and isn’t a natural part of life and change (as has been part of the heart of basically every other Who story), then is it really wrong to oppose that? Surely that would make the Kotts the uncontested biggest mass murderers in the history of everything. It feels like we need to develop a whole new moral compass just to reckon with this. And it doesn’t help that the other side of the argument is about if it’s right to change time, something the Who franchise has never been super consistent about and another thing that we don’t have morality established to deal with in the real world.
It feels like far too complex a set-up to be explored in just two short novels and a collection of tie-ins more interested in Daleks and Ood than the Time Lord Victorious himself. I’m a little worried that the moral question will be boiled down to the ‘killing is inconceivable even in the face of genocide’ stance that the franchise has held before, and practically never handled well. But needless to say, I’m very interested in what will happen in the future stories, especially second novel and series finale All Flesh Is Grass.

Between Heaven & Hell
Astarion x Dafni
Rating: M (no spice but its mentioned)
Ao3
Inaleth Sweet is a D&D oc belonging to one of my dear friends @ladyofthelatke from one of our old games. We were talking about Dafni liking romance novels and realized she'd be a fan of Inaleth. A fun little easter egg! The name of Dafni's book was also brainstormed by our D&D party! I don't know that I love the ending but meh!
Sunshine & Starlight: My on going bg3 series
Downtime for Dafni had become rare and fleeting in the past few days. Not that she mined being busy! She’d never been much good at sitting still. Her mind moved from thought to thought as quick as a hummingbird’s wing. A life of adventure rather agreed with her breezy disposition, that was a silver lining among the mess at least. But she found herself road-weary and overextended. Perhaps it was the tadpole or the fact she’d been in more battles in two days than she had in the last year. She couldn’t be sure. Either way, a little idle time would be good for her.
She was lounging on her belly in a grassy patch on the river bank, idly flipping through the dog-eared pages of a novel bound in soft pink leather, Between Heaven and Hell scrawled across the cover in faded gold lettering. It was a rather risqué account of an amours elf torn between the affection of her aasimar and a tiefling suiters. The first in a series penned by one Inaleth Sweet of Waterdeep - A fellow eladrin and personal favorite author of Dafni’s. She’d read it dozens of times but it never failed to enchant and intrigue her.
She’d always enjoyed reading. It was the only time she could bring herself to be (mostly) still. She could lose herself in the colorful whimsy of her imagination. She’d always been a romantic. Her headful of silly daydreams of love and adventure from a tender age. She had spent days on end in her village imagining what the world might be like beyond the shelter of Peleira and the familiar forests and shores of Faerie-Gwynneth. Books provided her wanderlust an outlet in the years before she crossed into the Material.
A pale hand snatched the book from her hands pulling her back to reality. Astarion glanced down at her with a mischievous grin, raising a singular angled brow. She clumsily fumbled to her knees attempting to reclaim it from him but Astarion simply raised the novel out of her reach.
He looked almost ethereal, shrouded in the soft, peachy glow of sunset as he flipped through his stolen prize. His loose undershirt was unbuttoned almost to his navel showing off his lanky feline-esque physique. It was completely unfair for him to be that gorgeous! Somehow he managed to mix boyish charm with noble dignity. She imagined Astarion was very much the kind of man humans pictured when they talked about the peerless beauty and grace of the elves.
“My, my, Daffodil, I never pegged you as a consumer of salacious novels. Aren’t you just full of surprises?” He said through a chuckle as he began to thumb through the pages, “You fold the corners of your books? And I thought I was despicable!”
He might have been from the Material Plane but he had that spark of mirth common to those hailing from her homeland. It was a welcome change of pace. She’d found he could be quite charming (when he wasn’t being surly or aloof). He’d taken to treating her with teasing endearment as of late. He would refer to her by little diminutives such as darling or dear. That was when he wasn’t calling her by that twee pet name, Daffodil. She knew that the majority of his doting was little more than suave twaddle but she couldn’t help but be won over by him.
There were things about himself he’d clearly chosen not to disclose. She was never one for secrets but she could hardly begrudge others for having them. Astarion’s omissions were likely connected to whatever had made him so prickly in the first place. She was curious of course but she wasn’t going to press him for anything he was unwilling to give. Dafni understood relationships much the same way she did gardens. Both required patience and dedication in order for something beautiful to flourish. She earnestly hoped a genuine friendship could blossom between them but that meant allowing him to open up to her in his own time no matter how badly she wanted to bombard him with a-million-and-one questions.
“What have I done to deserve this roguery?”
“Roguery?” Astarion snickered.
“Roguery.” She repeated. “Now find your own way to pass the time and give me mine back!”
Her brows stitched, her lower lip forming that perfect little pout of hers. She was trying very hard to appear cross but her eyes gave her away. They were sparkling with impish delight as she made another valiant effort at retrieving the silly thing. Despite her tilt towards clemency, Dafni was a bit of a puck.
“This is my way of passing the time. I can only wander among the trees so many times before the novelty wears off. Besides, making you blush is far more entertaining.”
Dafni snorted a blite smile forming at the corners of her plump lips, “You are incorrigible, you know that right?”
“So I’ve been told.”
“Well, I suppose if you are that bord I could read to you?” She yanked the book from his hands, clutching it to her chest smug and victorious. Reaching out with her free hand to tap a finger on the tip of his nose. “But, I’m skipping all the dirty bits!”
“Spoilsport.”
“It’s that or walking around the woods for the hundredth time.”
“You do raise an excellent point.” He sighed carefully arranging himself on the grass beside her, “Very well, I’ll agree to your stipulations.”
“Just be glad I’m not going to make you read for one of the characters! And because I’m just so sweet I’ll even start from the beginning for you.”
He listened intently as Dafni delivered the tale as if she were performing a one-woman play. Her face was adorably expressive as she changed her voice with each new character. Messy curls bouncing with every animated gesture. Occasionally she’d trail off feigning horror at the ‘dirty bits’ as she called them.
What would lewd words have sounded like in her lilt voice? Part of him wanted to find out right then. That wasn’t the first time such musings had crossed his mind. Dafni had made a few appearances in his private thoughts since their meeting. She had a coy, maidenly allure that conjured up all kinds of tempting images. These were nothing more than flights of fancy but fun nonetheless. Just another benefit of keeping her around.
He found himself lingering around her almost on instinct. The joy that followed her was tangible and warm as the sun on his skin. When she was near his mind felt quieted and the fear that gnawed at him would soften just a tad. He had grown to genuinely enjoy her company. He’d expected her to be dull and overly pious. Instead, he found she was rather amusing, coquettish even. She was witty and observant, always having a playful quip at the ready. The sort of whimsical woman whose effortless charm drew people in. She would have made an excellent vampire if not for her ridiculous soft heart.
Her compulsive need to care for every living thing with a sob story was somewhat vexing but he could hold his nose and deal with it most days. He’d make a comment here and there but really that was for her own good. She was painfully naïve, always seeing the best in people. It was clear to him Dafni’s life had been gentle. Free of hardships that might have taught her to approach others with such little skepticism.
A part of him was grateful for her lack of suspension. He knew gaining the trust of at least one of the members of the party would be crucial if he intended to enjoy the benefits of traveling with a group long term. Her friendship and propensity for peace making provided him with no small measure of safety. Still, that safety was at risk if she continued to offer herself up on a silver platter to every soul with even the smallest tale of woe she came across.
He glanced over at her, a found (begrudging, but found nonetheless), smile on his lips. The last rays of the setting sun casting its light on her lovely cherubic profile. While his motivations for befriending her had been far from altruistic having her near made his life provable better. When they’d first met he’d assumed her kindness would come at a price but she had surprised him, wanting nothing but his company in exchange. Without thinking he reached out cupping her cheek in his hand. The freckles, sage skin was unbearably soft and warm against his cool palm. Her heartbeat quickened bringing his attention to the tantalizing, wildflower sent of her blood. She leaned in close her eyes fluttering closed-
“We should head back to the others, it’s getting dark.” Astarion muttered, pulling back from her.
“I- Ha, of course. It’s late…” Her lower lip was caught in her teeth, her eyes darting ever so quickly from his mouth back to his eyes.
As tempting as she might be he was already in too deep with her. If he kissed her, he’d only want more. Any change to the current dynamic could disrupt the fragile safety he’d acquired. He couldn’t put himself at risk for the temporary happiness she might have brought. Perhaps when things were more settled. When he knew he could afford the risk, he would know the taste of her lips. For now though, he would have to resist.

i am very emotional over our boy tine right now and you are the person who loves him most so i was wondering what things you associate with him?
sumaya!!!! hi hi hiii!!! OH MY GOD i LOVE this question. thank you SO SO much for sending this in!
okay so. tine's my favourite character of all all allllll time. so i associate things of major personal importance to me to him:
that feeling of being comfortable in your skin and who you are. it might be fleeting and temporary, but when you truly feel secure and happy with who you are, despite knowing you have a tonne of insecurities, but for that one moment, you just acknowledge your whole worth and existence and purpose of living and being and that you matter? you matter to yourself and to others and that you taking up space and time on this earth is okay. that.
sunrises. there is something so optimistic and hopeful and beautiful about watching the sunrise at dawn and being thankful for being alive to see another day. tine makes me feel like watching a sunrise. he embodies the sun for me. he makes me feel so warm and good and happy. just like how the sun was made to be a source that sustains, he sustains and nourishes my heart and soul.
nature. the sounds that nature produces, like the water and the waves and drinking from a waterfall and the birds and the smell of wet grass after rainfall and dew drops. like, if tine had a smell, he'd smell like nature in its purest, untouched, divine form. flowers, bc of how they blossom from a small seed into something so majestically beautiful with time and effort and patience (bc i so badly wanna see him in a flower crown bc my boy deserves to be adorned) and that cool gentle breeze you feel on a hot summer day that gives you a moment of escape from the scorching heat.
if i could condense down tine into a colour, he'd be the soft peachy colour you get. neither too orange nor too pink. somewhere in between. that might be bc peaches are my favourite fruit though. its the sweetness and the soft flesh.
small happinesses. like seeing a baby laugh and giggle or a child beam because of their innocence when they learn about something new about the world or a lover smiling shyly because their lover remembers something about them like their favourite song. those small moments of happiness that you want to treasure for a lifetime.
your mum's home cooked food. i cant explain it, but there's something that overcomes you when you smell your mum's home cooked food and eat it. a familiarity. a sense of knowing your origin and that you have always belonged here.
a much needed hug. no words are needed here, but you know when someone just has the ability to read you so well and know you need a hug and comes and gives you that? yeah. those small acts of kindness.
words like habib (beloved), and jaan (that soul or spirit or energy inside you that is keeping you alive), and sukoon (peace from within) and qurat ul ayn (the coolness of the eyes) and nazaaqat (a tenderness and elegance).
when you climb on top of a mountain and you scream into the bewilderness, and you hear the echo of it over and over again. and its nothing but the sound of that. its freeing.
rumi's poetry. idek why. but he just does.
you know when you go to a city, especially the old town part of it, and you go to a market or souk or bazaar and you see just how full of life and colour it is? the hustle and bustle? just how alive your senses become? the sounds and what you see and the smell and the different textures and the assortment of food and snacks and drinks they offer? that.
and lastly, this: 🧡.

Is Deus Ex Machina always a bad thing? People who didn't like the finale of Avatar are always quick to point out the lion turtle, but I think we both agree the ending was both emotionally and thematically satisfying, and to me that's the most important thing. But my question is: if it IS satisfying, is it still a DEM? After all, DEM usually carries this idea that the ending is ruined and it leaves a bad taste in your mouth, which the Avatar finale doesn't.
Coincidentally, I was thinking about this just the other day, although I wasn’t considering making a post on it.
I think what makes this discussion troublesome is that there are two very different operating definitions for “deus ex machina.” I tend to think of it in terms of the classical definition, so I don’t personally have any problem with it when it’s done well, but most people seem to be operating with something like the same kind of shorthand that has turned “Mary Sue” into a meaningless complaint.
The term translates to ‘god from the machine.’ Wikipedia can give a functional summary of how it was originally employed and the criticisms that arose about it even amongst those old-timey Greeks. My own take is informed by those origins and the Greek myths that I’ve loved since I first learned about them in grade school. In a setting where gods and magic are in play, I don’t see a problem with a god being so moved by the events of the story or the character of the protagonist(s) that they intervene in otherwise impossible scenarios. The key here is that the story needs to justify why the god/power is intervening here and not in all kinds of other situations; if a god comes along and raises someone from the dead, or hands over a magic sword, or whatever, then it needs to be clear why people still die and magic swords aren’t sold at every corner market.
The Lionturtle is indeed a deus ex machina in that it is a god-like power suddenly entering the story to hand Aang knowledge that he would not otherwise have been able to attain. However, AtLA firmly establishes that there are spirits in the world with god-like power. Hei Bai is the first at a relatively small scale (and was another spirit moved by Aang’s steadfast purity to enact a happy ending, hmmm…), but we also see Koh having knowledge that predates the existence of the moon and the ocean, Koizilla being able to smash a whole fleet with the help of the Avatar State, Wan Shi Tong being able to move an infinitely-large library between the spirit and material worlds, and an eclipse of the sun shutting down all Firebending. These are all powers that the normal humans of the setting do not have, but they are all exercised as a result of the intervention of the protagonists, so I think they’re perfectly fine elements to have in the story.
Just about the only thing that might separate the Lionturtle from these other examples is that it seeks Aang out, rather than the other way around. However, I think that’s an oversimplification of the situation, in which we had just gotten an full episode of Aang holding fast to his belief in the sacredness of all life, despite disagreement and harassment from his friends. He meditates in search of an answer, and it’s then that the Lionturtle reaches out. So I think Aang ‘earns’ its attention by his unique beliefs, his steadfastness in the face of painful opposition, and his action in seeking a solution via meditation.
Why does the Lionturtle not reach out to other people? Well, the only pacifists in the franchise are Air Nomads like Aang, and there’s possible evidence that they weren’t all as steadfast when push came to shove. However, I don’t think the fate of the world hinged on whether Gyatso or some other random Air Nomad killed an enemy while fighting; Aang is in a fairly unique situation in that regard. Theoretically, a previous Avatar might have faced the same dilemma that could have been resolved with Energybending, but as we saw of Yanchen, perhaps those Avatars didn’t really seek out another solution besides violence. The Kyoshi novel does a great job handling this, showing Kyoshi struggling with similar questions but finding her own answers that do not match Aang’s. Perhaps Aang really is the first person in an Age who merited the Lionturtle’s intervention. It helps that the intention at the time of writing was for it to be a technique only available to the Avatar, so that definitely limits the potential situations where it might have been relevant.
So we’re left with the question of whether Energybending itself conforms to the established rules of the setting. I personally think it does, quite handily. We saw examples of bending being taken away before, at least on a temporary basis. The death of the Moon Spirit takes away all Waterbending. The eclipse on the Day of Black Sun takes away Firebending for its duration. Ty Lee pokes Qi-points to disable bending even while leaving limbs otherwise functional (sometimes). Those all help clearly establish that bending is tied to the physical body, and specifically the Qi energies flowing through it. We see esoteric manipulation of those energies by way of Waterhealing, Lightningbending, and the time Aang’s spirit is knocked out of his body by physically crashing into a bear-shaped shrine/idol.
So yes, the Lionturtle is a newly-arrived god who imparts special magic to solve a problem that couldn’t otherwise have worked out so neatly, but all the elements are there to make it a workable plot element. If the Day of Black Sun had worked out, would people be complaining about how Deus Ex Machina it is for the gAang to stumble across information on an eclipse coming before the return of Sozin’s Comet that will take away Firebending and allow Aang to confront Ozai without training up to the a higher fighting level?
Well, not if Aang kills Ozai in that scenario, I expect.
The root of the way most people use ‘deus ex machina’ in modern times, I think, links to what Aristotle is said to have been alluding to in that Wikipedia article, and what Nietzsche also seems to be getting at. Specifically, they seem to think it’s better when a tragic story is allowed to end in tragedy, rather than an audience-pleasing happy ending getting tacked on in an act of weakness and cowardice. It’s fair to criticize this (I enjoy tragedy as well as happy endings, when it’s done right), but I think it can be taken too far into a desire for bleak endings in general. It would be more ‘mature,’ the thinking goes, for Aang to have to kill Ozai, be tainted, scream his angst to the sky, and show the audience that Life Is Dark even though it’s a trite message that doesn’t really follow from anything that came before. The thing about Tragedy that a lot of people forget is that it needs to be set up with as much care and earnestness as Deus Ex Machina, or else it’s just as hackneyed and immature.
AtLA is not a tragedy. It is not about the mistakes and flaws of the protagonists piling up into chaos. So the complaint about ‘deus ex machina’ doesn’t even really apply, according to the original controversy about it. Aang is not freed from the consequences of a flaw, because his desire for peace and life is something that’s consistently portrayed as good throughout the rest of the series. It’s built up in his culture, the appreciation for the Air Nomads that’s conveyed despite their flaws, the focus on his being the last survivor of a genocide, and even the subtitle of the series (providing you don’t live somewhere that got the much more generic “Legend of..” title that fits Korra’s more generic legend so much better). It’s not a tragedy if everything is working out until a last minute swerve when all the good things suddenly become bad.
That’s a Comedy, according to certain modern definitions. ;)
The only story that could end with Aang giving up his ideals to kill Ozai using the philosophy and ways of the Fire Nation is a story about how the Fire Nation is right- that morality is secondary to strength and necessity. And if that’s the story being told, wouldn’t it have been easier to just make the Fire Nation the heroes in the first place, slaughtering corrupt pacifist hippies who would rather we all die than fight to improve the world?
No matter how you look at it, people who criticize AtLA’s ending by calling it a ‘deux ex machina’ aren’t doing so by using the text of the story at all. They’re either glossing over how the setup for all the plot elements is all right there in the story, or else they’re doing exactly what the ancient Greeks criticize bad deus ex machina for in the first place by putting the wrong ending on a story. So most who use ‘deux ex machina’ as a criticism aren’t thinking about the nature of Story at all, I think. They’ve heard the term, mistake it for general criticism of ‘unearned’ plot points, and/or use it as justification for their own pretentious fascination with bleak endings.
So, to summarize my answer- yes, DEM can be a criticism in and of itself, depending on the definition in play. It can apply to AtLA, also depending on the definition in play.
But applying DEM to AtLA as a criticism just doesn’t add up.

A letter to myself
001: heartaches, growing & changes.
A monogamous relationship consists of two partners willing to commit, but what happens if one of them fails to honor the commitment? Either you compromise or you leave. What happens when it becomes a frequent issue? Either you compromise or you leave. What happens when you compromise yourself for the sake of the relationship's longevity? Either you start to believe that you deserve the misery or you leave.
I grew up surrounded by relationships that endure not out of love, but out of… familiarity? guilt? duty? These relationships are held together by one person's urge to be there for their partner that either resents them or they resent. Not the best models, these relationships, but I was raised with the idea that you ought not to give up on the people you love. Nope, never ever ever give up on them. You commit to helping them sort their shit out in hopes of them realizing along the way that you are worthy of their love, attention, or whatever significant thing that they have to offer.
When you are young. It feels so empowering to think that your love can change things, and in little ways it does (how I wish it had greater impact). But then you live your teenage years, university life, the real world, and realize that opening your heart will hurt in ways you won’t be prepared for. Some people will not even know what to do with the love you give. As someone who has fallen in love, I have nothing much to offer in this conversation, but I do know that love- healthy, authentic love- is not supposed to hurt so much. I’m not saying that it should never hurt; the absence of pain and disappointment in a relationship should be seen as an anomaly. The point here is that the world is unfair and nothing is equal, so might as well strive to be in a relationship where the good moments outnumber the bad days.
I think many of us know this and try to aim for this kind of relationship, yet we settle. We convince ourselves that this miserable relationship we’re in counts as love, because even if we’ve been on and off, even if there is lingering resentment, even if there have been instances of abuse and manipulation, we still find our way back to each other and these sacrifices we make so that our lover stays, it builds character. This must mean something, you tell yourself, because it would destroy you even more if suffering doesn’t lead anything worthwhile.
So much of my time has been spent thinking about all of the ways I've been hurt (both on purpose or unintentionally) as there is always a lot to unpack in every wound you continue to pick on, whether consciously or not (also my masochist ass just has to pick the worst topic to dwell on). It doesn't help that I'm not the type to move quickly. I hold grudges, I barely forgive, and it takes me almost a lifetime to move past disappointment. Rumination is my best skill as much as it is my worst one. This is why I feel burdened most of the time, because I know that much of what I carry is what I need to let go of.
It makes me wonder, why make an effort in relationships if there's always that possibility of them leaving? Why should we bother when everything is bound by impermanence? Why should we persist when in the end, all that is waiting for us is death? Well, I don't have objective answers to that, but I choose to believe that it's much better that we try to make the most out of what we have so that we end up not regretting anything. I think that I live for those fleeting moments of relief that come with trying, those moments where you think to yourself, "Wow, I'm glad I made certain choices that led to this."
The stillness is not there for good, sure, and it feels as if it leaves long before I'm able to fully cherish it, but to be intermittently rewarded with peace because I made an effort is enough for me on most days.
I also think that we will always get what we deserve in order to be the best version of ourselves, whatever the hell that means. I think the reason why growing hurts so much is that too often, what we deserve does not always coincide with what we want and what we think we need. We yearn for and ask the wrong people to fulfill our emotional needs. We go after experiences we think will bring us The Ultimate Feeling of Happiness, only to be greeted with the familiar emptiness that we always try so hard to avoid. And it sucks.
I don't have anything to say that will console anyone or me and there's no pep talk that comes after this (I wish there was). I'm just learning to accept that I won't always have the answers when I need them most. Instead of beating myself up for not knowing the solution immediately, I welcome the sadness. I don't avoid it or pretend it does not exist like we've been taught to do. I embrace the sadness, allow it to upset me and make me cry until I can no longer.
-----
This quarantine was extra harsh for you. Dealing with issues that you tried to avoid is emotionally taxing and mentally draining. And of top of that you are recovering from a breakup. I know it’s really hard for you. Most especially we are confined in our own homes so there’s really not much of a distraction. Always remind yourself that this feeling is temporary. That this phase in your life will come to pass. For now embrace that pain and make in linger. After all as the famous author John Green said pain demands to be felt. We can’t really skip the bad days in our life but we should learn to somehow accept that life is fleeting that not everything will come to our way. In this terrifying world all we have is the connections that we make. So don’t go repeat the past mistake that you did. Go make meaningful connections other people. Be brave, go out in your shell and experience the life that is ahead of you.

NaNoWriMo - Can We Be Honest For a Second?
You are only doing NaNo for one of three reasons:
You need to get into a daily writing habit and writing 1666 words a day for a month is a good way of developing that habit.
You need to get a big chunk of writing done in a hurry and 50,000 words in a month ain't a full novel for most genres, but it ain't too shabby either.
Your friends are threatening to steal your fuzzy socks and your chocolate stash if you don't join.
See, the 50,000 words you get when you win NaNoWriMo aren't the prize, they're the byproduct. Winning NaNoWriMo means spending the month of November turning yourself into a better writer. And I want to help you be a winner.
There are pages and pages of writing advice on the internet. You could read books on writing, and nuance, and metaphor. If you're lucky you'll spend your entire life reading great books and learning from other authors, but no amount of learning is going to help you get off the starting block and to writing a book unless you know where to start. So that's what this post is about: how to prep for NaNoWriMo.
Mid-October you need to set aside a day for NaNoWriMo planning. You're going to be doing your research, basic plotting, and some very simple outlining. If you're a Plotter who needs to have all the details written down, fine, add more. If you're a Pantster (like me!) you'll find this method isn't overwhelming and leaves lots of room for improvisation. Once you've got your date set grab something to make notes on and give yourself five hours to work... and yes it's perfectly fine to do this in fifteen-minute increments over the month of October. You're busy, and that's normal. :)
Step 1: Write the elevator pitch for your novel.
Don't get hung up on finding an original plot or the perfect pitch right now. Just pick an idea that tickles your imagination and run with it. The fact that you are writing it will make it unique. Every person is different, and so is every story!
In two sentences or less write what you're going to write your book about. It doesn't need to be perfect, you just need to verbalize it somehow.
If you don't know what to write about look for inspiration in art work, online story prompts, the NaNoWriMo Adopt A Plot forum, or on Tumblr where the Out Of Context D&D people give anyone with a pulse an urge to write fantasy.
Can't decide on just one plot? No problem! Plan them all out. Start writing whichever catches your fancy in November and write the others next year.
Step 2: Use the Dime Novel Formula
This is 100% stolen from the author of the Doc Savage novels Kenneth Robeson (Lester Dent) and he deserves full credit. Partial credit goes to British author Tim Dedopulos who wrote a NaNoWriMo post in 2010 entitled How To Write A Novel In Three Days. We're using a modified version of his method....
Lester Dent said every good novel needed four things:
A new way to kill someone
A new thing for the villain to want
A new place
A menace that threatens your hero at every turn.
Write down your four things.
Step 3: You Need Four Plot Twists
No one likes a book where they can guess the ending on page one. It's boring. Plot twists set in the right place along the course of the book will give your reader a wild ride that keeps them reading long past bedtime. Plan on at least four plot twists.
Plot twist #1 comes in the first quarter of the book. "You're a wizard, Harry." "I found a wardrobe that leads to a kingdom of snow and my brother ate the evil queen's Turkish Delight!" etc. You get the idea.
Plot Twist #2 comes about 40% of the way through the book, this one's the gut punch. The hero loses something, they're betrayed, something horrible happens and at all cost, you must leave the readers thinking there is no way your hero can ever find a happy ending after this. If you're George R. R. R. Martin this is where you kill [spoiler redacted], you soulless fiend.
Plot Twist #3 comes at the climax of the story, when the fate of the universe hangs by a thread, and then suddenly PLOT TWIST! something amazing happens. Harry comes back from the dead. Loki really didn't kill Thor. Mulan shoots Shan Yu with a firework and the Emperor bows to her.
Plot Twist #4... and I know you're scratching your head here... this one comes in the last pages of the book. The villain confesses they did it all for the love of the hero, the hero pulls the sword from the stone and finds out it's plastic, the long-lost princess realizes she rescued the wrong kingdom! This is the very final twist that keeps the book alive after the last page is turned. It may seem diabolic, especially if you're not writing a series, but it lets the reader believe the characters will live on and have more adventures even after the book ends, and that's important.
Step 4: You Need Three Villains
Early in my writing career, I wrote several novels that were great except the pacing and tension seemed almost nonexistent. It wasn't until I wrote a book with a well fleshed out villain that I realized my early novels suffered from a lack of antagonist. Save yourself some tears and define your villains up front.
Who is your Primary Antagonist? This is the villain that shows up one page one and gives our hero grief but who may not be a villain all along. If you're writing an Enemies-To-Lovers romance this antagonist will wind up being a hero in the end.
Who is your Second Antagonist? The Middle Villain is the one who comes in the center of the book (hence the name) and who the hero didn't see as a problem beforehand. Either this antagonist was a friend before and betrayed the hero, or they become a villain because of the hero's actions in achieving the first quest of the book. This antagonist carries a lot of weight and deals the hero the most setbacks. They're the one that drives the hero to the moment of despair and strips them of everything (which is why a betrayer makes such a good second villain). While dealing with the second antagonist the hero stumbles into a realization of who the bigger villain is. If you're writing a series with One Big Villain driving the series (think Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews or Star Wars where the Emperor is the Big Bad) you'll have the hero defeat a series of Middle Villains in each book and only face The One Big Bad in the final book. If you're writing a series driven by Hero's Choice this second villain will bounce between being a villain and being a temporary ally (think the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs or Star Trek where Romulans and Klingons are sometimes enemies and sometimes friends). The other series option is the No Hero series like Game of Thrones where everyone is an antagonist and a protagonist in their own mind.
Who is the Third Antagonist? The Big Bad, the villain whose presence is felt but unknown throughout the book. In a series, you may not see this person until the end of the series. The best part about this kind of antagonist is it invites readers to reread so they can catch the earlier clues. You really can save this villain for the very end, or at least the last 1/3 of the book. They usually appear around the hero's Moment Of Despair, when the hero has lost all hope, friends, support, and belief in themself. This is the villain that defines the hero. Because the hero looks up from the mud and blood and despair and says, "I cannot let you do this. I cannot let you win even if I lose everything." The decision to fight this villain when all hope is lost, at great personal sacrifice, is what makes an ordinary person a hero. And because the hero is coming from such a low point, beaten and fragile, their victory is all the more sweet in the end.
Whew! Got all that? Okay. Good. Take a breather because the next section is there we're going to tackle the nitty gritty. You ready?
Step 5: Building The World
Do you know what derails the most NaNoWriMo novelists? The research. They pause to look up a name, or find a place to set a scene, and then they're lost down the rabbit hole of research and you find them wandering bookstores in mid-January wondering why people are hanging Valentine's Day decorations. It's sad, really. And you, smarty that you are, are going to dodge that bullet by naming everything right now!
Make a list of 25 female names and 25 male names for your book. You can do it by culture or race if you need to, but get it done before November 1st. And, remember, if you hate the name November 15th you can change it in edits. That's why we have the Search-Replace function.
Make a list of all the modes of transport in your book. If you have spaceships or sailing vessels make a list of names for them too. Ten minimum. More is better. Pick a theme if you're having trouble, like naming all the ships in your fleet after minerals: Jasper, Feldspar, Malachite...
Make a list of all the places you might set a scene. Name the cafes, name the fields, name the forests, name the nebulas, name the schools, name the rooms. You may not use them all but they'll be there if you need them.
Make a list of all your props: weapons, clothes, whatever will be on stage goes right here. If it helps, pretend you're planning a play. Picture what you might need. And feel free to add more when you start writing. These lists are guidelines only, you can use them or lose them to your heart's content.
Step 6: The Setting Thesaurus
This is going to take a bit of time, so plan ahead. What you need to do here is follow the excellent example set by Becca and Angela and make a thesaurus for all the scenes.
Honestly, this is more for the Plotters who need to know everything. Pantsters, write five or six key words to describe each place, one for each major sense. If you have more or have something you really want to see in that place, scribble it down.
Bookmark the Emotion Thesaurus and Setting Thesaurus in case of emergencies in November.
Step 7: Time For The Math
NaNoWriMo is meant to be thirty days of steady writing, but let's be realistic, unless you're life is perfect you won't be writing all thirty days. Look at your calendar right now and decide how many days you can write. For me is about 24 days in November. I take weekends off to spend time with my kids and I'll be too busy cooking on Thanksgiving to write.
Grab a calculator. Divide 50,000 by the number of days you have to write. This number is your target word count if you want to have 50,000 words at the end of the month.
50,000 isn't a full novel for adult genres and most YA. If you really want a novel in a month you need to do that math with 75,000 words. I'm sorry.
Curse yourself. Cry. Google WRITE OR DIE. Thank the creators of WRITE OR DIE for all they have done for you. Bookmark WRITE OR DIE. Tell your family and friends you love them, and then go buy some note cards.
Step 8: The Dread Outline
This trick I actually picked up from a fellow Critique Circle writer my first year participating in NANOWRIMO. She said she spent Halloween night handing out candy and writing scenes on a note card. One card per writing day with all the scenes she needed to write.
Let's pretend you have 25 writing days in November and you want 50,000 words. That's 2000 words on each of your writing days, or one scene per day.
Pick out 25 cards and write one or two sentences describing a scene you want to write on each card.
Put a small sticker or check mark on Plot Twist days and mark the days on your calendar. You'll probably be writing a plot twist on the 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th of November.
Rearrange, discard, or rewrite anything that doesn't seem to make sense.
REMEMBER! This is only the rough draft. It's meant to be rough. You are aiming to write something ugly. Everything will be smoothed and polished in edits. These cards can be changed at any time, they're really here to be your countdown clock to victory. No panicking allowed.
Step 9: Write Like A Pro
Can I share a teeny tiny little secret with you? There's not an author alive who knows what they're doing. That blank page is just as blank for you as it is for your favorite author. Every person is unique. Every person will write differently and in different ways. There is no wrong way to be an author.
Sit down.
Write.
All the planning you did, that's there for reference. All those lists and names and plot twists were written down so your subconscious could have time to play with the ideas and present you with the scenes when it's time to write. On November 1st all you have to do is show up and write.
If you get stuck, check your notes.
If you go running down a new avenue just make sure to connect with your plot twist.
Never abandon your villains, they're what makes your hero a hero.
Write.
Keep writing.
Don't give up.
Have fun.

The Ace of Hearts, Part 6a
Note: this is an extra chapter that fits after Part 6 and before Part 7 and is in response to a suggestion by @edgeofthedales. There is some Actual Action in this one, hoorah!
Incidentally, it’s strange how characters seem to take on a life of their own. The captain was originally going to be something like Brian Blessed’s Long John Silver from a Treasure Island series that I vaguely remember from childhood, but ended up becoming much more sinister and the Doctor suddenly became very flirty (in his own idiosyncratic way).
He gave her his hand and led her to a dance-floor garlanded with stars in glass globes. The tiny, pulsating lights illuminated every mote of dust. They reminded her of seeing the lights strung along the sea-front at Scarborough as a child, the first time she felt she had been taken away from the everyday into a magical world.
He took her into a dance hold, fingers intertwined, his hand cool on her back, her hand on the stiff fabric of his dinner-jacket. She stood with a little distance between them, hesitating, but he smiled reassurance and pulled her closer until they were touching.
The rhythm of the music was unfamiliar, but he appeared to make a mental calculation, transposing it to something that would be comprehensible to her and leading her in a waltz.
“I believe that this is this planet's version of what is called the music of the spheres,” he said. “The inhabitants went through a similar process as those of Earth, and initially believed themselves to be at the centre of the universe and the other planets and stars as objects that orbited around them. Their musical scale is based on the frequency of rotation of the other planets. Celestial harmonies, they call it. It's remarkable how planets that are so far from one another can develop such similar ways. Perhaps all beings have a similar tendency to assume that everything else rotates around them.”
She said nothing, but smiled, enjoying his proximity and the vibrations of his voice as he spoke, smelling the slight scent of the camphorwood in which his dinner-suit must have been stored.
“You're very silent,” he said. “Is all this too dull for you?”
“No, not at all. I like listening to you talk about these things, even though I don't always understand it all.”
The delighted smile he gave her in response to this made her feel as if everything within her was melting.
“So may I tell you more about science and space?” he asked, barely above a whisper, his mouth very close to her ear.
“Oh yes, I'd be delighted”
“And time travel?”
“Yes”
“And xenosociology?”
“I'm not sure what that is but yes, if you explain it.”
“And the details of the vehicles in the intergalactic fleet X54-A20?” He smiled mischievously.
“Those too.”
If he had been anyone else, she would have suspected him of engaging in some bizarre attempt at flirtation.
“Any young prince with a scientific and talkative bent would be delighted to have such an appreciative and understanding paramour.”
“And how would he reward her for being so very understanding?”
“Oh, I think, perhaps,” he said, kissing her on the cheek, “he would analyse,” (a kiss on her forehead) “all the parameters” (and one on the other cheek) “of the situation” (a light one on the end of her nose) “and find some” (he brushed his lips against hers) “appropriate modus operandi.” (and finally, a kiss on the lips).
Betty, lost in the depths of the kiss, hardly noticed when the music stopped, but the Doctor suddenly stiffened and pulled away from her. She had barely had time to feel bereft when a rough voice, incongruous in this refined environment, assailed them.
“You have been boarded!”
She turned around to see a bulky, bearded figure in a coat of vivid reds and pinks that clashed with the subtle gold and black décor of the restaurant.
“We are space pirates and we know that all of you here have more wealth than you know what to do with. If you pay us, you can go. If not, perhaps someone may ransom you. Or you may enjoy an extended stay in our oubliettes. We have an interesting collection of vermin and some instruments of, let us say, persuasion, that we will be more than happy to introduce you to.”
It was clear, despite the gloom, that the speaker was accompanied by a large band of followers, some of whom were occupied in restraining the other diners and staff.
“And you,” said the pirate, addressing the Doctor, “must be the philosopher-prince whose name appears on the guest list, the heir to several galaxies.” He approached a little closer and regarded the Doctor with a leer. “And a very pretty one at that. Quite exquisite, in fact. One of the most eligible bachelors for several light-years, I shouldn't wonder. I can imagine many titled young ladies, or their fathers, fighting with each other to ransom you. It will just be a matter of auctioning you off to the highest bidder, once we have disposed of your companion who, I take it, is not of the blood royal and more in the nature of a temporary plaything.”
“She is not a plaything, temporary or otherwise, and you are not disposing of her.” The Doctor wrapped his arms protectively around Betty. “And I am not a prince. I'm the Doctor, a Time Lord from Gallifrey, owner of a rather antiquated TARDIS and otherwise of very modest means. Since I've acquired something of a reputation in certain parts of the universe and a number of unpleasant enemies, I thought it wise to adopt an alias. However, it appears that my imaginary princely alter ego is not devoid of enemies either.”
“You would be surprised how often we hear that sort of thing,” said the pirate. “Oh, I'm just pretending to be immensely rich to impress my girlfriend, and all that. We treat it with the contempt it deserves. Look at that dress your fancy woman is wearing – must have cost a small fortune. I suppose she comes up to you and says” (here he imitated a wheedling female voice) “'oh please, do buy me that new dress, I'll look so pretty in it,' and you say” (adopting a mockery of the Doctor's pronunciation) “'yes dear, anything for you, anything at all'. Such a generous fellow. And no doubt hoping that she will let you help her out of it at the end of the evening. She must indeed be your mistress – it seems as if she has you twisted right around her little finger. Do you jump when she says jump?”
“Please do not speak of my companion in such terms. She is a respectable young lady. And it isn't like that at all. The designer gave me the dress as a favour because I had previously helped him with some quantum physical calculations and got him out of a few tight spots.”
“Enough of your blathering. I don’t believe a word of it. Take them, me hearties!”
“Me hearties, indeed,” said the Doctor, raising his eyebrows. “One might think that space pirates could apply a little originality instead of conforming to the most ridiculous and hackneyed stereotypes. You're nothing but a bad parody of characters by my good friend Mr. Stevenson. Rather a pity that his work is already out of copyright by now, or I would claim royalties on his behalf.”
“Silence!” The captain slapped the Doctor across his face. Two of the pirates pulled Betty away from the Doctor by the shoulders while two others took his arms and twisted them behind his back, causing him to wince in pain.
“If he's so valuable to you, perhaps you should take more care not to damage him,” said Betty.
“Take them away,” ordered the pirate captain.
