A Shopper Found a Note From a 'Chinese Prisoner' in a Walmart Purse â But Is It Legit?
(Photo: Trunk Archive)
An Arizona woman went to Walmart, bought a new purse â and found a note in it from someone claiming to be a victim of slave labor in China and asking for help. The woman says she had the note translated three times to verify its message.
This isnât the first time a story like this has come to light: a Western consumer saying they have found a note from a Chinese labor camp prisoner tucked in their purchase.
In 2015, a young woman in Leeds, England, said she found a note from a Chinese prisoner in a pair of her dadâs socks, bought at British chain Primark. At the time, the young woman told Metro.co.uk that she was unwilling to give Primark all the information they requested so that they could investigate further after she tweeted about finding the note. âIf I gave them too much information on the product, they would be able to track this, and there would be consequences for workers,â she said.
Primark, meanwhile, told Metro, âWe have been the subject of a number of hoaxes in the past. This allegation that a note was found in a Primark sock cannot be corroborated because sadly neither the product, the packaging or a receipt has been given to us, despite the fact that we have asked for them repeatedly. Unfortunately, without this information, we cannot investigate.â
In 2014, two women in Swansea, Wales, claimed to have found alternate tags sewn into dresses they bought at a Primark outlet. The tags, written in English, called out the labor practices that allowed the dresses to be manufactured and sold. At the time, the retailer asked the customers to return the dresses so they could investigate, but noted that the styles in question had not been sold since 2013.
That same year, a woman who bought a pair of jeans at a Primark shop in Belfast, Ireland, also allegedly found a note â wrapped in a prison ID card â from someone claiming to be a Chinese prisoner being forced to make clothing through slave labor, according to the BBC. At the time, Primark issued a statement to the BBC noting that the jeans in question were last sold in Ireland in 2009 â and thus the brand found it âvery strange that this has come to light so recently.â
They added, however, that multiple inspections of their suppliers had been made since 2009, and âno prison or other forced labor of any kind was found during these inspectionsâ â and they said the company âactively investigates all allegations of breaches of its code of conduct immediately to ensure the well-being of all workers in its supply chain.â
In 2012, a Portland woman found a letter from a prisoner of a Chinese slave labor camp in a box of Halloween decorations she had bought at Kmart. At the time, the noteâs veracity was confirmed by a TV channel affiliated with the Falun Gong movement. A representative for Human Rights Watch told the Oregonian that the conditions described in the letter match information known about Chinese forced labor camps, but the organization was âin no position to confirm the veracity or originâ of the Kmart letter.
While it is close to impossible to completely verify the veracity and provenance of the letters consumers claim to find in their purchases â allegedly written by the victims of Chinese slave labor âinhumane labor practices, especially in the realm of clothing manufacturing, are well documented throughout Asia.
In 2015, Human Rights Watch published a report, âWork Faster or Get Out,â about labor abuses in Cambodia. The Guardian, a British news outlet, recently published a report sponsored by UNICEF about child labor in the fashion supply chain, reporting that 170 million children are engaged in child labor, largely making textiles and clothing to fulfill demand in Europe and America.
An investigation by the Atlantic in 2015 revealed that Patagonia was but one of the American brands whose products are made from human trafficking and forced labor. The human rights and labor violations werenât found in the brandâs first-tier suppliers (those that actually manufacture the finished products consumers purchase), but in the mills that make textiles from raw materials that are then sourced for production.
The Oakland, California-based nonprofit organization Slavery Footprint allows Americans consumers to track which brands and companies have ties to slave labor practices abroad, as well as learn more about how to end global labor violations and support companies that practice fair labor. The group is affiliated with the for-profit company Made in a Free World, which produces supply-chain transparency software called FRDM that allows companies to help flag and avoid the use of slave labor in their businesses.

Why are the soccer jerseys so expensive? Why are we getting more and more?
In the history of football, the Leeds United Club is a pioneer. In 1973, Leeds United became the first club in the world to sell its own jersey. At that time, a Leeds United jersey sold for only $7.
Now, 45 years later, the price of a Leeds United jersey is more than 10 times that of the year. Even considering inflation, the price of the jersey has risen too fast, making fans more and more unable to afford it.
Manchester City's jersey is one of the most expensive jerseys in the Premier League.
Manchester City and Manchester United is the most expensive, the European continent is more expensive than the British commemorative jerseys are frequently launched
According to statistics, since the 2011/2012 season, the price of the Premier League team jersey has increased by 18.5%. In the 2018/2019 season, the average price of the Premier League team jersey is $68. Among the 20 Premier League teams, the most expensive jerseys are Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, which range in price from $80 to $88.
Not only is the price of jerseys getting higher and higher, but the number of jerseys is also increasing. At the earliest, a team had only one jersey (home jersey), and later had the second jersey (away jersey), and finally, the third jersey.
Initially, the No. 3 jersey was only used in special circumstances: to avoid confusion between the two teams that were engaged in the battle, or to avoid the visiting team using the same color as the home team.
But now, this golden rule is no longer working. Clubs use this option more and more frequently. A team, especially a big team, must have a No. 3 jersey in addition to the home jersey and away jersey. That's how it is done to save more money from the pockets of the fans.
In addition to the No. 3 jersey, the clubs also launched commemorative jerseys from time to time. Recently, Manchester United launched a blue jersey to commemorate the team's first Champions League in the 1967/1968 season. In the final against the Portuguese Super Red Army Benfica, Manchester United wore a blue shirt. But the price of this commemorative jersey is $145, and the response among the fans is not very good.
However, despite the price increase in recent years, the Premier League team's jersey is not the most expensive. In continental Europe, fans have to spend more money to buy a jersey for their team.
In Italy, the price of a jersey averages $90. In France and Germany, the price of a jersey is between $91 and $95.
In 1967, "Red Devils" Manchester United was the first Champions League champion in a blue shirt.
The sponsorship fee is getting higher and higher. You can earn money by selling the jersey.
Why is the jersey price so expensive? One reason is that sponsorship fees are getting higher and higher, and sponsors have to earn money by selling jerseys.
British sports goods marketing analysis expert Peter Rollman said: "The reason for the continual rise in the price of jerseys is a variety of. The jersey sponsorship fee has risen, forcing the jersey price to rise."
In the past, sponsors sponsored everything related to the club, from the stadium to the socks. At the time, the sponsors invested in the team and did not seek the current return. They are more focused on concepts that look abstract, such as "brand value," "exposure," and "fan loyalty."
But now it's different. Sponsors are not only concerned about the exposure of their own brands, but also get financial returns.
For example, Adidas signed a 10-year sponsorship contract with Manchester United for a total of $1 billion. It gave the sponsorship fee to Manchester United in advance to obtain permission to produce and sell Manchester United jerseys. After spending such a high sponsorship fee, Adidas definitely wants to earn money back, so the price of the jersey will be higher than the original.
Nike and Adidas make the most money
From children to teenagers to adults, sales of jerseys are changing.
At the earliest time, the jersey was just the clothes that the players wore. But as time goes by, the material and quality of the jersey are greatly improved. With the advancement of society, people are more and more free and open in dressing. Therefore, the jersey is becoming more and more a must-have for the fans. It can be worn not only on the stands, but also on sports. It can also be worn as casual wear.
According to Chris Strider, a statistician at the University of Sheffield, the responsibilities of the jersey and the target audience have changed over time, which has led to a gradual increase in its price.
Stred said: "In the beginning, the main purpose of the football jersey was for the players to wear on the court. After that, it began to become a children's sportswear over time. Later, he became a teenager. Casual clothes. In the end, it knocked on the adult market. Now, the style of the jersey is influenced by the preferences of the adult market, and many times it is resorted to nostalgia."
When the jersey is just worn by the players and not sold, it has no price. When the sales target of the jersey becomes children and adolescents, its price is also cheap, because children and adolescents are people with low consumption power. Once you start selling to adults too, the price of the jersey will definitely rise. Adults are the richest, the prices are set too cheap, they don't have to buy them because they feel no face.
The jersey is not only worn on the stands, but both men and women like to wear them.
Who made the money to sell the jersey?
The income of the football club mainly comes from three major blocks: the ticket income on the match day, the broadcast rights income and the commercial sales income. In the commercial sales income, the sales income of the shirt is often the main part.
In the 2017/2018 season, the Premier League 20 club's total sponsorship fee revenue set a new record. According to the "Sporting Intelligence" consulting firm, the total revenue of the Premier League 20 clubs in the 2017/2018 season was $3.7736 billion, an increase of $73.65 million compared to the previous season.
Nothing is too early, sponsored so much money, sponsors are going to make money. Although fans complain that jerseys are getting more expensive, a large part of the profits from selling jerseys are for jersey manufacturers to take away. Nike, Adidas, and Hummer took the most, and small producers, such as New Balance, took less.
British sports lawyer Jack Cocken said: "On average, Nike earns more than three years in the Premier League, and all the clubs in the Premier League have earned more than one season."
According to Rollman, in general, a jersey with a price of $80.35, 5.8% of the cost of the materials used, the production process and the transportation link. 11.5% of the jersey price is the profit of the producer, and the license fee charged by each club only accounts for 3.6% of the price. Retailers take the highest percentage, accounting for 22% of the jersey price. The other part is used for tax payment, supply and advertising and marketing.
For each jersey with a price of $80.35, the club can only get $2.8926, and the big guys let others earn.
The jersey is getting more and more expensive
What does the jersey mean for fans?
First of all, it means intergenerational inheritance.
The UK Football Business University has campuses in Manchester and Wembley. The university's football business and marketing professor Darren Bernstein said: "I have a 5-year-old son. We always say that football is intergenerational (hereditary ), you pass on your love for your club to the next generation. I support (local team) Bury, I hope my son also supports. The jersey is part of this (inheritance) process."
Some fans buy their jerseys because they support a team, and some fans buy a team's jersey because they like a star. For the latter part of the fans, the name of the star is more important than the club logo printed on the chest.
In recent years, the transfer fee of players has risen. Can a club pay his high transfer fee and annual salary by selling a shirt with the name of a star? Jack Cockenâs answer is no.
He exemplified: "We can imagine a Colombian player signing a contract with a Premier League team. The most fanatical Colombian fans will buy his jersey, which will generate $3 million to $4 million in sales."
However, the sales amount of the jersey with this star is only a small percentage of the total sales. Now the players have transferred, the transfer fee is tens of millions of dollars, even tens of millions of dollars, and the most has already exceeded 100 million. Therefore, relying on sales jerseys is not enough to pay players transfer fees and wages.
However, the name of a player associated with a sportswear manufacturer may be an important factor in the transfer.
In the summer of 2013, Real Madrid spent $115 million to buy Welsh player Bell from Tottenham Hotspur. Last season, he stayed on the bench from time to time, not always able to play the main force.
There are rumors that after the season, Bell will leave. However, according to Bernstein's colleague Simon Milton, Bell really has to leave. Bell has only three possible places: Bayern Munich, Juventus and Manchester United.
He explained: "The reason is that these three clubs are like Real Madrid. The jersey is also provided by Adidas. Bell is a player of Adidas. If you are sponsored and sponsored by a club, you also need to transfer to your players. Decided to exert influence."
In the past, the jersey color was monotonous. Now, the jerseys are colorful and varied
Nike and Adidas cannot completely monopolize the market
Looking around the world football, the jersey market is monopolized by two giants, Nike and Adidas. Which clubs Nike and Adi sponsored, and the fans of the clubs were unlucky. Nike and Adi have a huge sponsorship fee, they must earn money from the sales of the shirt. As a result, the price of the jerseys of the teams they sponsor will rise.
Everything has its advantages and disadvantages. Nike and Adi are strong, but they can't do it. Both Nike and Adi are sponsored by big teams. They have more fans and are more purchasing power. However, they are unable to completely monopolize the market. They sign more profitable clubs and give opportunities to small and medium-sized sportswear brands.
Brands such as Hummer, Umbro and New Balance can also sign with other big clubs. Relatively speaking, the prices of these second-line brands will be relatively low, which is the gospel of the fans.
The Milton analysis said: "In this case, these jerseys will not be as expensive as the jerseys produced by Nike or Adidas. This fierce competition will eventually stabilize the price and even lower the price."
Weir McDermottâs personal website was printed on the chest of the Ras Wanderers jersey
The ball will live very hard!
No benefit, no early. Even the second-tier brands like Hummer, Umbro and New Balance will not make money-losing trades. When choosing which clubs to sponsor, they will also pick and choose. So the ball will be sad reminder, can not come to sponsor, the days are very difficult.
Scottish famous detective novelist Val McDermid was born in 1955 in Krkkadi, Scotland. She is a loyal fan of the local team Les Rover. Currently, the Les Rover is in the Scottish Third League (Su B League).
Weir McDermott bought a Rasley wanderer's jersey, and she wanted to print her name on that jersey. Print the name on the jersey, each letter is charged $1.3. Her name has 11 letters and the total cost is only $14.3. But in the end, Will McDermott spent $27,000 and was not taxed.
How is the 11 letter printed so expensive? It turned out that I heard that the team I supported was sad, and Weir McDermott decided to pay a sum of money to sponsor his team. In doing so, the team has weathered the economic difficulties, and the name of Weier McDermott was printed on the chest of the jersey and also promoted her.
Will McDermott said: "I think I am the only writer to do this. I was at the Reis Training Center, like the Scottish clubs in all the lower leagues. It has always been a challenge to get funding. We originally had a shirt sponsor, but it didn't want to continue. So I think I can do it alone. This is a genius idea. Because of my investment, I made a lot of money. Do this for me. The book was advertised. When I received an interview with the New York Times, I realized how much impact my story had."

Link Found Between Microplastics in Rivers and Wastewater Treatment Plants in England
Impact on public health resulting from the presence of the microplastics has not been fully assessed
According to new research out of the University of Leeds in England, microplastics in rivers are found in higher concentrations downstream from wastewater treatment plants. Researchers analyzed river samples downstream from six wastewater treatment plants in northern England for the findings.
On average, the concentration of microplastics downstream from the wastewater treatment plants was three times higher than normal. In one instance, the concentration was higher by a factor of 69. Microplastics are coined by the EPA as âa newly identified contaminant,â and the human health impacts of the contaminant have not yet fully been analyzed and assessed.
The main sources for microplastics in England and throughout the world stem mainly from plastic manufacturing and recycling industries, landfills, wastewater treatment plants and septic tanks.
In most areas, microplastics are not removed by the wastewater or water treatment processes, meaning the only way to halt them from infiltrating public waters would be to eliminate them at the source.
âNot that long ago microbeads in toiletries and cosmetics were the microplastics getting all the public attention,â said Dr. Paul Kay, lead author of the UK study. âSeeing the amount of plastic microfibers from clothing and textiles polluting our rivers, we need to think seriously about the role of our synthetic fabrics in long-term environmental harm.â
Microplastics are just one of many âemerging contaminantsâ identified by EPA, each prompting new technologies or processes necessary to properly treat water or wastewater to eliminate potential public health risks.

Best Business in 2016: Which Companies Impressed Over the Last Year

2016 saw business boom once again. With the recession gradually fading from memory and consumers starting to spend again, companies across Europe have been able to solidify their foundations and expand their assets in order to offer better products and services.
Indeed, according to an article by the Wall Street Journal, Spainâs economy grew by 0.8% in the second quarter of 2016 and hit its target of around 3% by the close of the year. Increased consumer spending helped raise the countryâs bottom line, but it was exports where Spain thrived. Thanks to the fruit, automotive and pharmaceutical industries, Spainâs economy grew faster than France, Germany and the US.Â
In fact, as well as doing better than the aforementioned countries, Spain also outperformed the UK in the first quarter of 2016. However, with many international companies experiencing a boom in 2016, Spanish businesses may need to pull up their socks if they want to keep pace. In fact, with this in mind, weâve decided to take a look at some of the top performing companies and what lessons that could teach Spanish businesses.
32Red

With online betting now becoming more accepted by the mainstream thanks to government regulation and strict financial protocols, licensed operators have been able to venture beyond their traditional confines and explore new opportunities.
32Red became a prime example of this diversification in 2016 when it signed a number of high profile sponsorship deals. At its core, 32Red is an online casino, poker and sports betting site. Customers can sign up and play all manner of games just as they would in a real-life casino. Whether thatâs something as simple as blackjack or one of 32Redâs themed slots such as Tomb Raider or Jurassic Park, the company is a hub for all forms of online betting.
Given that more people are now playing online, 32Red revealed record revenue earnings in the first half of 2016. With more bets being placed, the operator reported a 63% rise in net gaming revenue to ÂŁ30.4 million. Following a positive six months at the start of 2016, 32Red decided to branch out into sport sponsorship.
In May, Leeds United announced 32Red as the âofficial club sponsorâ, while the popular King George VI Chase at Kempton became another interest for the betting operator. Through these deals, 32Red has become a household name for many sports fans and that could pay dividends in 2017. Indeed, with a stadium capacity of 40,204 and an average attendance of 25,472 in 2016/2017 (according to emafootball.co.uk), the sponsorship deal with Leeds United alone is enough to put more eyes on 32Red in the coming months.
Synter Group

Another sign that the impact of the recession is starting to wane is the recent performance of prestige car retailer the Synter Group. Based in Leicester, England, and employing more than 7,000 people across 86 sites, this company became the largest motor dealer by revenue after sales topped 135,000 units. Indeed, in June 2016 alone, the Synter Group banked ÂŁ4,296,000 which was just slightly less than Pendragon but significantly more than the likes of the Marshall Motor Group (ÂŁ2,121,055) and the Mercedes-Benz Retail Group (ÂŁ766,331).
However, beyond its financial and physical growth in 2016, the Synter Group became a top company in 2016 thanks to its commitment to its staff. Ranked as the second best âBig Company to Work for in 2016â by The Sunday Times, 85% of the Synter Groupâs employees told the newspaper that they were âproudâ to work for the company, while 76% said their job was an âinterestingâ part of their lives.
Naturally, selling luxury cars such as Aston Martins and Bentleys isnât easy, which is why the Synter Group also upped its personal development budget in 2016. Investing ÂŁ6.7 million in its staff, the company has shown that valuing employees is the best way to not only achieve success in business but also earn some industry plaudits. As this investment starts to show a return in 2017, weâre likely to see the Synter Group grown further and become one of the leading automotive retailers in Europe.
Anglo American

âExpensive Depth of Fieldâ (CC BY 2.0) by TVZ Design
Aside from judging a businessâs performance on its ability to forge new deals and invest in staff, the stock market also offers an interesting insight into the fortunes of a company and its investors. Although the threat of Brexit has caused some turbulence in the financial markets over the past few months, British companies have still prospered.
In fact, according to a review of the latest movers and shakers by Business Insider, ten British businesses saw their share price increase by at least 45% in 2016. Topping the bill against the odds was the platinum and diamond mining outfit Anglo American. Following significant drops in the prices of platinum and diamonds in 2015, Anglo Americanâs value took a tumble.
With desperate times calling for desperate measures, the company announced plans to cut two-thirds of its global workforce, scale down its business by removing extraneous interests and focusing on its core services. Severe cuts often result in marginal or temporary growth spurts, but Anglo American bucked that trend in 2016 by tripling its value.
Although overall revenue might still be lower than it once was, the companyâs share price increased by a massive 277.5% in 2016 (as cited by Business Insider)Â That figure not only made shareholders smile, but it made Anglo American the top performing UK business (from a share perspective) last year. Now, with more money to play with, we could see the mining operation expand in 2017.
Lessons to be Learned
Spainâs economy might have enjoyed some positives in 2016, but that doesnât mean it canât take inspiration from some top business players from around the world. Indeed, if Spanish companies like Acerinox (steel manufacturing), Ebro Foods and Endesa (electricity company) can follow the likes of 32red and Anglo American, then it could be a profitable 2017 for Spain.

A sock just seems a sock, right? No. Making a sock is an investment; it is not simply about making a custom logo or design. You have got to think about an intricate combination of comfort, print design, seasonal use, fibers, and sizes. Send them your color preferences, logo and anything extra you would like on the sock such as polka dots or stripes. You will also pick the size of your sock. Once they receive your idea, they digitize it and send you a virtual verification for you to go over. Such easy is the process!
