I love the fic you showed on Luke, Han, Chewie being kidnapped by the trio- I would love to see more! Is there a chance we might see that fic or sections of it? I hope you are having a great day!
You may see more sections of it! It’s like 30k because I have zero self control sometimes, so idk if I will post the whole thing, but snippets I can do!
I wrote a fuckin’ hilarious bit where Han tells Paz that Luke’s got a crush on Din. Paz thinks about Din’s sexuality for .05 seconds and immediately has an anxiety attack that Din feels like he’s got to hide his queerness.
He brings it up with Din, who promptly astral projects in embarrassment.

This was a reconnaissance mission now. One which Luke was again having fun on. With Djarin refusing to speak to his comrade, Luke wriggled right into the place he’d left behind and started agitating again. He goaded Djarin and Fett that he could shave hours off the current course time. Han and Chewie hung back and strategically did not back up a damn thing he said.
Paz, uncomfortable to be on any ship that was not his own, clutched at his fingers and watched Luke chasing Djarin like an underfoot puppy in concern.
“What does he want from Din?” he asked Han and Chewie quietly.
Han blinked slowly.
“He’s got a crush,” he said.
Paz’s helmet managed to blanch.
“You’re kidding,” he said.
“Yeah, your boy’s ticking every one of Luke’s boxes, I’m afraid,” Han said while Chewie snickered. “He’s already decided on a destination wedding.”
Paz rubbed a few knuckles under the edge of his helmet and looked away.
“I dunno if the Armorer’s gonna be cool with that,” he said.
Han snorted.
“Armor isn’t strong enough for him, he’s got mind powers,” he said.
Paz’s helmet turned slightly back towards him.
“The Armorer is Din’s parent,” he said. “She leads the teachings at our covert.”
AHA. Orthodox. Han had it now. Djarin was a preacher’s son.
“I don’t know what that means,” Paz said.
“Don’t worry, I got you,” Han told him sympathetically. “It’s okay, though. People are more tolerant than you think.”
“I still don’t know what that means,” Paz repeated.
“You will,” Han soothed, “You will.”

 It was an hour before Paz blurted out, “Wait you mean he’s gay?” and Han almost cried, he was laughing so hard.

 This was supposed to be a hostage situation, but Paz was making this trip a pleasure cruise. He’d gotten about fourteen thousand times more awkward around both Luke and Djarin anytime they passed by. Luke had caught onto this with interest.
Han did nothing to stop him. He and Chewie finally had entertainment after hours and hours of torture.
Paz inched away.
“I’m happy for you,” he told Luke. “It’s fine.”
Luke cocked his head at him and got closer.
“No, man. Not me, sorry,” Paz said. “You got—you got Din. He’s—well, honestly the last I saw him he was like, fifteen and sort of scrawny, but you know he’s probably grown a couple muscles by now.”
Luke lit up.
“I know, he picked me up,” he said.
Paz vibrated.
“Mm-hm,” he said.
“Do you think he likes me?” Luke asked him.
Paz vibrated so hard his armor nearly started knocking against itself.
“He’s really into ancient Tusken shit,” he said. “Ask him about ancient Tusken shit.”
Luke’s eyes couldn’t get any wider or rounder. Any more of this and his pupils would start dilating, too.
“Copy that,” he said, then vanished.
Chewie whimpered and wiped tears from his eyes. Han leaned into his side and grinned so wide his face hurt.

 Luke took to flattening himself against the cockpit door and serenading Djarin in the other side with pleas for information about Ancient Tusken culture. Djarin was understandable baffled. He smelled a rat and refused to be forthcoming with any new knowledge.
That made Luke caterwaul louder until Fett had enough of him and locked Djarin out of the cockpit too, with instructions to ‘silence the Jedi before I do permanently.’
Djarin was now stuck out here with the rest of them. He crouched in front of Luke and they had a staring contest for a good two minutes before Djarin got up and sighed.
“You have so much energy,” he said. “No wonder Grogu likes you.”
Luke rocketed up to stand next to him proudly.
“I don’t sleep most nights,” he said.
Djarin studied him.
“I see that,” he said.
“Han and Leia say that I’m a ‘hostile’ bedpartner when I do,” Luke said with finger quotes for Djarin’s benefit.
Djarin, Han swore, was trying to think of a polite way to say, ‘Sir, I think you’re at breaking point.’ But instead he said, ‘do you like tea?’ to which Luke said, ‘absolutely not.’ Djarin told him that he had a great tea for him to try and was thereafter followed into the Falcon’s kitchenette around the corner.
Paz, in the meantime, was absolutely shitting himself. No longer able to avoid this conversation with Djarin.
“I think it’s cute,” Han goaded with Chewie nudging his ribs the whole time.
“The Armorer will not approve,” Paz insisted.

 Djarin had done the impossible: he’d put Luke to sleep. He delicately removed the mug of (possible sleep medication) tea from Luke’s unconscious deathgrip and asked Han where the used dishware went. That was thoughtful. Han told him to just stick it any damn place around the sink and he or Chewie would get to it.
He did and then came back to settle in next to Paz. Paz visibly experienced a rainbow of emotions. Djarin didn’t notice a single one of them. Instead, he crossed his legs and held the orange tips of one hand in the orange tips of the other.
“I wanted to apologize, Paz,” he said. “After what you’ve sacrificed for me and the kid, I should have been more grateful.”
“D—don’t mention it,” Paz stammered. “It’s—it’s the Way.”
“It is the Way,” Djarin agreed. “I think I was afraid of how to face all of you afterwards.”
Han could hear Paz’s internal scream from here.
“Yeah,” he said. “I’ll bet you, uh, did. It—it wasn’t the first time, was it?”
Djarin sat up a little straighter.
“No. How did you know?” he asked.
Paz shivered.
“Just a feeling,” he said. “You know, uh. Din. You don’t have to be ashamed of anything, right? You’re—you’re like my little brother. I wouldn’t let anything happen to you or anyone say anything to you. Okay?”
Awwwwwwwww.
Djarin looked up into Paz’s visor.
“Are you sick?” he asked.
“What? No. I’m. I’m saying, that if you ever had something you wanted to tell me, or you know, any of us. We’re always here to listen,” Paz said. “And to support you.”
Djarin’s silver helmet tilted worriedly.
“I already did,” he said.
“GREAT,” Paz said. “Perfect. You’re doing amazing.”
Djarin pulled back, officially disturbed.
“Right,” he said slowly. “So I’m gonna—”
“Listen, kid,” Paz said, grabbing the strap between Djarin’s chest and back plates and dragging him back down to sitting. “Think about your parent.” He took Djarin’s hand from where he was actively trying to escape and held it in a firm, masculine grip. “She loves you, you know that.”
“Paz, I’m panicking,” Djarin said outloud.
“And she was so happy for you to have a foundling,” Paz carried on like plough. “So she’s gonna be happy for you, no matter what.”
Djarin could not pull his hand out of Paz’s grip, and boy was he trying. He’d started a cool descent to the floor, he was trying so hard.
“I know,” he grated out.
“But a jedi, Din?”
“He can’t help it, man,” Djarin said, still struggling almost on his back now. “You said it yourself. It’s a born-with-it thing.”
Paz stared forcefully at his knuckles.
“You’re right,” he said, letting out a slow breath. “But if that’s how it gonna be, you really should propose first.”
Djarin’s helmet somehow managed to emote ‘shock’ on the ground there.
“I’m sorry, what?” he asked. “I barely knew her.”
“Her?” Paz asked, then caught himself. “Sorry, sorry. Not my business—”
“It was like, a week at most—”
“Not my business.”
“And yeah, she had a great kid and—”
“Wait, wait, hold up,” Paz said. “Who are you talking about?”
Djarin stared.
“My friend? From Sorgen?” he said. “Who are you talking about?”
Paz went very still.
“You’re fuckin’ some gal on Sorgen?” he asked.
“No?” Djarin said. “I mean. She wanted to, and I thought about it, but it was only a week, and I didn’t want her to feel like I’d used her only for—who are you talking about?”
“The jedi,” Paz said, pointing at Luke’s languid, curled up self on the table’s bench.
“Why would I be fucking the jedi?” Djarin asked. “He’s my son’s teacher, Paz.”
“Because he’s crushing on you?” Paz asked, equally upset and confused. “And you’re gay, so?”
“I’m what?”
“Gay????”
“I am??”
Han was crying. Han was sobbing.
These idiots were days of comedy. Look at them go. Look at ‘em spin.
“Din, please. You don’t have to fake it. I support you—”
“I didn’t ask for your support?”
“It’s nothing to be ashamed of—”
“I’m not ashamed.”
“Are you sure? Because I’m picking up some strong feelings. And I don’t want you to think that—”
“Paz, what I want more than anything for you to do right now is to stop thinking. I’m not gay.”
Paz pressed a hand against his helmet like he was in physical pain.
“But the way you always looked at Teyo,” he said.
Djarin had a tiny stroke and slammed his fist into Paz’s arm.
“DON’T MENTION—”
“What the FUCK, brat?”
“HOW DARE YOU—”
“Why’re you yellin’ at me now??”
“Why’re you bringing up some childhood shit, haven’t we done enough of that already?”
“Why’re you so mad? I’m tryin’ to be supportive. If you wanna fuck the Jedi, fuck the Jedi. I’m just sayin’ maybe don’t tell the Armorer until after you’ve done it, so she doesn’t think you’re under some kinda mind-trick or somethin’, alright?”
Han no longer needed those helmets. He had these characters down. Djarin was gaping now. In shock and offense.
“Never speak to me again,” he decided.
“Bro,” Paz said.
“NO.”
“Karkin’ hell, Din. What’s your problem?”
“Excuse me, I must drown, where are your facilities?” Djarin asked Han directly.
“Round the corner, on the left,” Han told him.
“No, no, no,” Paz said, grabbing Djarin by the cape and dragging him back. “We gotta talk about this. We gotta process.”
“I’m not processing shit with you,” Djarin said. “I am not fucking the jedi.”
“But you want to,” Paz deduced.
“I—what? Wh—do you want me to have relations with him? Did I miss something?” Djarin asked.
“I want you to feel supported,” Paz said.
“I don’t. I feel targeted,” Djarin said. “Stop targeting me.”
“Okay, okay. I’ll stop.”
“Good. Let go.”
“But if—”
“Paz, I’m going to behead myself.”
“If you do want to have sex with the jedi, later. That’s fine. Or anyone else. That’s fine, too.”
“BOBA.”

summary: fred and y/n are in a popular band together, and they're dating. the ships get too much and they have to tell their fans. but during an interview someone questions y/n about her racist family. but luckily fred is there for her, her hero. her lover boy.
song prompt 2: lvr boy - awfultune (i have to be honest i didn't really stick too much to it, but i had this idea so we are gonna go with it.
a/n: this is a modern au- the band is kinda supposed to give maneskin vibes but idk, although lvr boy isn't the best example of that-
toujours pur. one of the most popular bands globally, they were so frequently spoken about by all age groups, and just all people to be honest. they really were great. there music varied so much in genre, there was always something for everybody. the bandmates where what really made people love the band- on top of their killer vocals and riffs and just talent in general, their interviews, their youtube videos, their instagram lives, all of it made the public see what amazing people they truly were. fred weasley (lead guitarist) george weasley (rythm guitarist) y/n black (lead vocalist and ukulele player) harry potter (bass player) hermione granger (pianist) ron weasley (drummer) ginny weasley (acoustic guitarist). that summed up to a lot of gingers and a lot of talent. after endless obliviousness and shipping, ron and hermione finally got together- much to the fandoms satisfaction. harry and ginny were frequently shipped, but once ginny came out they started shipping her with luna, a known friend of the band. it was fun to both y/n and fred at first, all their friends were being almost nagged to get with the people they so obviously liked. it wasn't a safely guarded secret that fred and y/n were an item, they just never directly stated it. i mean what was the point? they loved each other, why vocalize it to the world? but then it happened. the tweets, the instagram posts, the tiktoks, every social media platform had to know if the hand holding, the cheek kisses, the 'i love you's', and the loving looks were all just out of friendship- or something much more. it was still fun initially, watching people try and figure out their relationship, but then it was brought into the interviews and the livestreams.
"why don't you guys just tell them? its so obvious anyway, and it's not like your hiding it." george asked after the band attempted a livestream, but ended it when the only comments were about fred and y/n. "why is it their business?" she responded softly. she wasn't wrong, but everyone except fred was still confused. "we know it's not. but come on, we're not gonna force you to do anything you're not comfortable with but it would stop all of that" ginny said, pointing to the livestream set up they have at the end of her sentence. fred and y/n knew they were right, but they were so comfortable how they were, they didn't want their relationship to be completely demolished. it was the last thing they wanted. and the last thing that either of them saw coming, but they were still cautious. "we have a couple interviews tomorrow, tell them or don't tell them. but it would be a good chance." both of them instantly knew what the other was thinking. the time has come. they're gonna tell them.
the next day were all sitting in front of an interviewer, and then another one, and then another one. and finally this one. "so, i know your name has never really been spoken about" the interviewer said, the band nodded "so what's with the band name?" everyone looked at y/n. she chuckled slightly and started explaining "so most of my family, not good people. they were pretty commonly associated with a racist organisation. like i said, not good people. well they have this family tree, personally i've only seen it once. me and my dad don't go to the family home often. it gives us the heebie geebies and they hate us. well anyway, the family tree says toujours pur, always pure. so i thought i'd mock them and suggested it as a band name. trust me, i've received many a message about it. they aren't happy." everyone chuckled, if y/n was one thing it was spiteful. "so just out of interest, has the band received any backlash about your family?" the entire band shifted in their seats, if there was one thing y/n rarely talked about it was her family. and fred was preparing to go into protective boyfriend mode. she shook her head "um, no not really." the guy looked somewhat hurt "oh. so racist family isn't something your fans have a problem with?" ok this guy was obviously being bitter, but before fred could say anything y/n jumped in "family by blood. not by nature. the only thing that correlates me with them is dna, and clearly they drew the short straw because they're missing some necessary brain cells. i'm not my 'family'. so no. i don't get backlash for something people who i've only ever had one conversation with did." the rest of the interview was very awkward. like, very.
"ok one last one and then we're done for the day" lily (their self appointed manager- not that anyone minded, she was a life saver) said, sending a sympathetic smile to y/n "i'm not doing it." everyone frowned, but understood somewhat. "y/n/n, love, one more. we'll tell them we're shagging like they want and then bounce" that made her chuckle, he always managed to that "lovely description of our relationship dear" everyone started laughing at the two. "ok. but if one more thing gets said about the fucking black family i swear to shit i will start throwing things."
the last interview was a lot more smooth. especially when fred held y/n's hand the entire time. that didn't go unnoticed by the interviewer, who commented on it a few minutes after she sat down. "so, fred and y/n. i know you to are" she paused and cleared her throat, whilst looking at their hands "close. and i know you're probably sick of hearing this but, what are you?" they chuckled a little "um... we're sorta dating" the interviewer smiled, and so did fred and y/n. it felt good to say it out loud. "i have to ask you, really quickly. is fred weasley your lover boy?" she asked, referencing their latest single "lvr boy". it was well known that y/n wrote the majority of their songs- specifically the slower bedroom artist vibe songs. y/n nodded sheepishly, never actually admitting that directly to the group no matter how obvious. "my room mate now owes me a tenner, thank you" everyone laughed, this was ok. she was ok.
"i'm sorry about earlier, love." she sighed "it's ok." he shrugged "no it's not. that was fucked up" both of their features softened "i was ok. i am ok. because you were there. and because you're here." they kissed "y'know 'm sorry bout your name. i know people give you shit for it" she pecked his lips again "don't worry about it." he shook his head "why didn't your dad take remus's name?" they both looked at each other "cause a name shouldn't be a burden. and with the person yuo love, it eases it all y'know. they don't care when they have each other." he smiled "can't wait till you have my name" he didn't mean to say it, panic evident in his eyes she smiled a genuinely happy smile "me neither" and she put her head in his chest.
he was her lover boy.
he owned her heart.
he owned her heart like no one else did.
she was always his.

How abt *insert actor/character* getting married and their ex (the reader) kinda 'forcing herself' to go to the wedding bc she really wants to see their mutual friends again but like doesn't wanna see the wedding. And reader just watching the love of their live get married and be happy with someone else and their heart silently being ripped apart? Too cruel?

a/n: here you go cruel anon. turns out im not that great at heartbreak but hopefully this makes your heart crack a little bit. (also idk if people read authors notes but my requests are currently closed!) 
Y/N thought back on all the times she could have turned around. When she was getting into her car. When she reached the airport. When she queued to board the plane. When she checked into her hotel. When she began to get ready. Now she was facing the very last time she could turn around. Stood outside the venue, all dressed up with no one to walk her inside. But just like the times before, she didn’t turn around, she pushed on. Her heart breaking a little more with each step, she knew that surely by the end of the night there would be nothing left but crumbs. She had promised herself two things before this trip. Number one; she would not speak to him. Number two; she would not cry. She wasn’t entirely sure she would be able to keep either of the promises to herself, but repeating them in her head made her feel that little bit calmer.
She situated herself beside a table lined with drinks, helping herself to a flute of champagne. She was anxious for the doors to be opened so she could find a seat, somewhere in a corner at the back would suit her just fine. Out of sight of anyone who would surely recognise her, she had no intentions of engaging in conversation until the reception. But seeing as what was happening today she should have known it would be her unlucky day.
“Well aren’t you a sight for sore eyes,” a voice speaks beside her and she turns, landing eyes on someone she had not seen for far too long. His suit was tailored perfectly to his body, his long hair tied in a bun at the back of his head. “I wasn’t sure you’d come.” He pulls her into a hug.
“I wasn’t sure I would either,” she admits as she pulls away, “I wasn’t going to, but I wanted to see everyone...most people.”
Willie laughs softly, “I’m glad you’re here, sit beside me?” He asks, motioning with his head towards the doors that were being pulled open.
“Oh, I was just gonna sit in the back,” she stumbles over her words as Willie takes ahold of her hand, “Aren’t you going to sit with Alex?”
“He’s preoccupied.” Willie states simply, ignoring her protests as he pulls her towards the front of the room to take a seat in the front row.
She sighs as she sits down beside him. The sick feeling in her stomach growing as the room slowly became more and more full, people lining up on the benches and getting ready to watch the ceremony.
Willie reaches down and takes ahold of her hand again, giving it a light squeeze and offering a comforting smile, “You don’t have to stay.” He whispers.
“I do.” She nods, “I want to see everyone, I won’t stay all day but I need to at least say hello now I’m here.”
Willie nods his head, squeezing her hand one last time and patting her knees before turning back to face forward, the ceremony would be starting any minute and she found that her eyes were glued to the pattern on the floor.
For the entirety of the ceremony she didn’t look up. She didn’t want to risk meeting his eyes, didn’t want to see her friends sympathetic looks and definitely didn’t want to see the bride looking beautiful in her white dress. She tried her best not to listen, she couldn’t stomach hearing the vows and knew if she heard the words I do in his voice she’d cry. So she thought about anything else but what was happening in front of her.
She finally looked up when the couple was safely past her line of sight, eyes instantly meeting that of an old blonde friend. He gave her a wave, she was sure the smile was supposed to make her feel better but she just felt more pathetic. Why was she even here? She’s sure the invite was out of politeness and not an actual invitation to come. And if her friends were going to be tiptoeing around her and treating her like a porcelain doll she wasn’t sure she could cope. The nicer people were to her about this the more likely it was she would break down.
She didn’t want to think about it, about him, sure she was at his wedding but that didn’t mean this day had to be about him. She wanted to have a catch up with her friends, avoid her ex the whole night and then go back home, cry with a bottle of wine and forget this whole thing ever happened.
“I’m glad you came.” Alex says as he reaches her, pulling her into a hug, “It’s good to see you.”
“Yeah, it’s good to see you too.” She responds truthfully, “Can we go to the reception? I think I need a drink already.”
Alex laughs, taking Willies hand in his own and leading the way towards the after party. The amount of people that were there she was sure she would be able to avoid the groom for the night. She found herself situated on a table with her friends, helping herself to a glass of wine and making sure the bottle was kept close to her.
No matter how excited she was to see her friends she found that now she was here she was finding it hard to hold a conversation. The group around her were still familiar with each other, still seeing each other and having things to talk about, she felt a little like a spare part. But still she smiled along and listened to their conversation. Something about a recent party they had attended where Reggie had drank a little too much, she laughed along with them unsure of what else to do. The more they spoke and tried to involve her in the conversation the more she realised she didn’t really know the people around her anymore. Sure she had good memories with them and she would always consider them her friends, but she didn’t really know them.
The best thing about weddings it that you can be invisible if you wanted to be. The bride and groom were always busy, everyone wanting to talk to them and congratulate them, and the drunker the guests got the easier it was to slip away from conversations and merely watch the scenes unfold. Which is exactly what she did. She watched her friends get drunk and progressively louder, not noticing anymore if she wasn’t joining in their conversation. If the night continued this way she was certain she would make it out in one piece.
She thought she was doing a pretty good job of avoiding the one person she feared seeing the most. But halfway through the night a hand landed on her shoulder and a familiar scent filled her nose. She felt her skin ignite where his fingers touched and she begged the butterflies in her stomach to go away, to fly away and disappear forever.
Turning in her seat she finally meets his eyes for the first time that night, forcing a smile onto her face as she stands up and allows him to pull her into a hug. Her heart hammers in her chest and she uses every ounce of will power within her to not shed any tears, she felt the epitome of pathetic. Wanting to cry at a wedding like she was in a bad romcom movie. Only if this were a movie she’d get the guy, or a second guy would come sweep her off her feet and make her forget the first one was ever there. She didn’t see that happening anytime soon.
“Thanks for coming.” Luke smiles, “You look great, that colour really suits you.”
She returns his smile with a tight lipped one of her own, “Thanks, you don’t look too bad yourself.” She attempts a light hearted laugh.
She looked away, she couldn’t stand looking into his eyes any longer, his gaze intense and stirring way too many different emotions inside of her. She wanted him to be horrible to her, to tell her to leave and never come back, not to tell her she looks great. How was she ever supposed to get over him when he was nothing but nice to her all the time. She wished he had done something at the end to allow her to hate him. Cheat on her maybe, or tell her he never loved her, then maybe she’d stand a tiny chance of getting over him and moving on with her life. Instead he was selfish and kept her at arms length because he knew he always could and that should have been enough for her to stay away, but she just couldn’t.
“Congratulations,” she looks back at him, eyes settling just above his to avoid his gaze, “You seem really happy, I wish you all the best.”
“Thanks,” he smiles and it’s genuine, something which breaks her heart a little more.
Of course she wants him to be happy, but a bigger part of her wants him to be happy with her and not anyone else. She knows that’s selfish, but that doesn’t stop her from trying to wish it into existence no matter how futile she knows it is.
“Have you met Jess?” He asks, placing a hand on her shoulder as though about to lead her somewhere.
“Oh, no I haven’t but she looks busy,” she quickly shrugs his hand off, the bride she could see from the corner of her eye, laughing at something another guest had said, “I’ll introduce myself later.” She lies.
The only thing she could think that would be worse than this wedding was having to actually meet the bride. To meet her replacement, the better version. The one who had stolen his heart and been worth enough to keep it forever. She forces a smile and excuses herself to the bathroom.
As she reaches the bathroom she can feel her eyes stinging, shutting herself in a cubicle she fans her face, determined not to let a single tear fall. She had made a promise to herself and the least she could do was keep it. She leant her head back against the door, letting out a shaky breath to compose herself.
Once she was sure she wouldn’t cry she exited the bathroom again, thankful to see that he was no longer at the table she had just ran from. She took her seat and no one asked where she had been or if she was okay, she was glad for that at least.
As the night wore on she thought she was doing okay, one little hiccup but no tears since, she’d even found herself genuinely laughing at a couple points. He’d spoken to her and she hadn’t thrown up on his shoes, he had no reason to try and speak to her again.
But then it was time for the first dance and she felt her chest tightening. Her calm composure being over taken by a sinking feeling of dread. She watched for a minute, watched him hold her close and smile. Watched him lean in to kiss her gently before spinning her under his arm and pulling her back in. She wished more than anything that it was her in his arms, her who he still looked at like the world shone behind her eyes. But it would never be her again, and his bride she was sure was far more beautiful than she could ever hope to be.
She watched as more dancers joined the floor, her friends among them. She tried to smile, but the sight was too much for her. Her friends laughing and dancing with their loved ones while she sat on the side lines and watched feeling like a stranger. The slow music a melancholy soundtrack to her emotions, reminding her of something she could never have.
She stands from the table, dragging her eyes over each person she knew, lingering on Luke for a moment longer before she turned and walked out of the room. She knew that this would be the last time she ever saw him, because she knew seeing him happy with someone else would be a slow form of torture. So she walked away, from him, from her friends forever, leaving whatever little pieces were left of her heart behind. By the time she exited the building she felt nothing more than a hollow shell and she finally let the tears fall.

Plot: Despite you and Colson breaking up a year ago, you still have feelings for him and suspect he might still have some for you. But a wrench is thrown in your thoughts when he brings another girl to a hangout.
A/N: Yay, this is the first writing I’m posting here! It’s loosely based on a dream I had and it’s kinda angsty/full of pining but I have a part two in the works 👀 (also idk how to write these describer things so bear with me lmao)
Warnings: One scene describes the plot of a movie Colson’s starring in (in the story) and it briefly mentions kidnapping.
You and Colson had broken up a year ago, after mutually deciding that his tour schedule and the demands of his career put too much of a strain on your relationship. Despite the way your romance ended, it was an amicable breakup and you stayed friends afterwards. Although you didn’t want to admit it, you were still in love with him. Between his looks, his dedication to his art, and his commitment to being a good father to Casie, you couldn’t help but feel like maybe you should’ve pushed harder to keep him. 
There were a lot of moments at hangouts and house parties where you thought he laughed a little too long at your stories, or maintained eye contact for a few seconds more than he should’ve, that made you think maybe he felt the same way. You tried asking the likes of Pete, Rook, and Slim whether he talked about you often, or if they knew how he felt, but their answers weren’t what you wanted to hear. 
As you got ready for a hangout at Rook’s one night, you found yourself putting on Colson’s favorite dress of yours, along with a necklace he got you two birthdays ago. You wore that outfit on countless dinner dates and to the studio a few times, and you gave yourself a melancholy smile in the mirror as you looked back. Casie thought that dress brought out your eyes well. She also thought you might become her stepmother one day. 
Once you got to Rook’s, you made your rounds around the living room to say hi to everyone, coming to Colson last. His gaze immediately went to the necklace, then the dress, then to your face, his face dropping. He muttered a quick “hey,” gave you an awkward hug, and sat back down. It was clear you had gotten into his head, so you figured you’d sit next to him on the couch.
“I’m sorry, Y/N,” he said as you stepped over. “Jasmine’s sitting there.” 
The smile you had on your face a moment earlier fell, and you looked over your shoulder at the rest of the group, hoping to make eye contact with someone who could tell you who this “Jasmine” was. Pete offered you a sympathetic smile, making room on the other couch next to him. 
“Who the hell is Jasmine?” You quietly asked him as you sat down.
“New girlfriend,” he said. “They met on the set of that new movie he’s filming in Calabasas. She’s a lot like you, you know. I think you’d be good friends if it weren’t for the fact that she’s dating the star-crossed love of your life.”
You elbowed him in the side as a girl you had never met came into the room. Her eyes instantly fell on you, and she smiled as she walked over.
“Hey, you must be Y/N! I’m Jasmine, it’s so nice to finally meet you!”
“Yeah, you too!”
“Everyone’s told me so much about you, Colson and Rook always say you’re one of the sweetest, funniest people they’ve met.”
“Do they?” You felt your heart fall to your stomach.
“All the time! I have a feeling we’ll get along well.”
“Same,” you fibbed. She smiled and took her seat next to Colson, joining in whatever conversation he was having with Slim and Noah. 
You leaned back on the couch, almost regretting showing up. 
“I didn’t wanna tell you he still talks about you,” Pete said. “I figured it’d kinda sting now that he’s taken.” 
“She took him alright,” you muttered, earning a laugh. “I just, I don’t know. I thought maybe there was a chance he’d wanna take me back.” 
“It’s possible, I think. I mean, it’s Colson, how long do we think this will really last?”
“We were together for a year and seven months. Who knows?” 
He sighed, unsure of how to comfort you. 
As the night went on, you made conversation with most people in the room, aside from Colson and Jasmine. You wanted to talk to them, partly so Jasmine didn’t think you were a bitch and partly because talking to Colson was one of your favorite things to do. After some convincing, you got Pete to go over with you, scared that going alone would become an awkward third-wheel situation. 
Pete was right, you and Jasmine had a lot in common. It was easy for you two to find things to discuss, and she seemed like a really genuine, fun person. Pete occasionally chimed in to tell you other things you had in common, but Colson was practically silent the whole time. 
A little while after you started talking, Jasmine excused herself to the kitchen to go get another drink. You turned to Pete, unsure what to do without Jasmine there, and he started asking Colson more about his new movie. 
“It’s a romcom, which I haven’t really done before,” he said. “A guy’s with this girl and they break up over some stupid shit, and the whole movie they’re trying to win each other back without knowing it.”
Your gaze had been alternating between the floor and the rest of the room, but you noticed that Colson was looking directly at you while he described the film. You looked up at him almost mournfully, wondering if there was any real-life connection to the plot. Noah pulled Pete aside to show him something, leaving you and Colson standing alone.
“That sounds like a nice movie,” you commented, hoping to make the situation less awkward. “I know what that’s like.”
“Me too,” he sighed. He bit his lip, looking pensive, like he was trying to find the right words for whatever he wanted to say next. He didn’t get to say it though, since Jasmine returned before he could open his mouth. 
“I was just telling Y/N about the movie,” Colson explained.
“Oh, it’s such a fun one. The whole premise is so disturbing. I mean, what kind of a sicko would hold his daughter-in-law for ransom in a shed?”
You furrowed your brow, contemplating whether Colson was actually describing the movie earlier. “Uh, yeah, that’s so twisted.”
Pete rejoined the group and started rambling about whatever Noah showed him, but you couldn’t pay enough attention to follow what he was saying. Whenever he said something funny, you glanced over at Colson to see if he was laughing. It was exactly what you’d do at these hangouts when you were dating. When he noticed you looking up at him, he’d smile and put his arm around you, if he was next to you. 
“Are you okay, Y/N?” Jasmine asked, noticing your expression drop. Upon hearing this, Colson looked up at you, and Pete turned to look at you too, but he already knew the answer.
“Hmm? Oh, yeah, I’m fine. Just a little tired.”
“I could drive you home in a little bit if you want, I have work in the morning so I’m not staying too late,” she offered. 
“Thanks, I’d really appreciate that.” As much as you wanted to stay, it was torture to see how happy Colson and Jasmine were together. It didn’t help that the guys and Noah already loved her so much. It frustrated you that no one warned you that she’d be there, but at the same time, they knew how much Colson meant to you and didn’t want to upset you.
After some more awkward small talk, Slim and Baze came over to ask Colson some questions about a song they were working on. Jasmine excitedly chimed in, offering some production ideas. Pete could tell you were uncomfortable, so he put his hand on your back, nudging you towards the kitchen.  
Once it was just the two of you, Pete grabbed you a water bottle from the fridge, then sat down in a barstool next to the counter. 
“Come into my office, kid,” he said, pulling out another stool for you.
“I don’t know what to do,” you sighed, sitting down next to him.
“It’s a tricky situation to be in. But after tonight, I really think he’s still into you.”
“Why would he bring Jasmine here then? Especially knowing I was coming.”
“I dunno. I don’t think he knows, either. But the way he looked at you when you first got here? Then he looked crushed when you couldn’t sit next to him.”
“I dunno, Pete. It’s Colson we’re talking about, he’s not exactly a saint.”
“You’re not wrong, but I think there’s something there.”
Before you could think of something to say, Jasmine came in to tell you she was gonna go warm up the car. You nodded and started saying goodbye to everyone. You couldn’t find Colson, so you wandered around the house to see where he was.
You finally bumped into him in the hallway, after he came out of the bathroom.
“Uh, hey,” he said. “You heading out?”
“Yeah, Jasmine’s warming up the car.”
“Alright. Well, it was nice to see you again.”
He pulled you into a hug much warmer than the one he gave you earlier, and you closed your eyes against his chest, not wanting to have to say goodbye again. His arms lingered a bit longer than they should have, and as you pulled away, he kissed your forehead before sighing.
“Get home safe,” he muttered, returning to the living room and leaving you in the hall.

Pairing: billy!four/oc
Description: You were Arianna's first friend in New York City which is why One helped you fake your death when you get into trouble. It's never stated in the story but that's why.
Without anywhere to go, he gives you a home at the base while he assembles his team. Eventually you meet Four and he makes "dying" worth while. 
When One cut all ties to his old life it was because he had a mission. A purpose to fulfill. Same goes for the rest of the team. Each member was handpicked.
Except for you.
You were never part of the plan so you didn't get a number.
Obviously this made introductions a little complicated when One introduced you to Two.
The CIA spook, already dubious about One and his motivations, raised one eyebrow and sized you up quickly.
You smiled awkwardly, sensing that a formal handshake was out of the question. "Just call me Zero," you joked halfheartedly, trying not to fidget under Two's critical gaze.
Just as you broke out in a nervous sweat, Two finally looked away and motioned for One to follow her out of the trailer. It didn't take a genius to figure out what she wanted to discuss privately.
Did One seriously believe it was a good idea to involve a civilian on what was most likely going to turn out to be a suicide mission?
What did a nobody like you really bring to the table, skill-wise?
You didn't have a good answer to either of those questions and honestly neither did One.
Anyway, faking your death had been an experience™ and the adjustment period after had been hard. One hadn't been the most sympathetic. Not outwardly. After all, you were never a part of his grand plan. You were the wrench that got thrown in the plan. You felt kinda bad about that sometimes. 
···
When One was ready to go recruit Two, he thought it best you stay behind. 
"Sure. I'll be fine," you reassured him with a soft smile that didn't quite reach your eyes. 
The expression on his face made it very clear that he did not believe you. But he said nothing, already behind schedule. 
You woke up the next morning bracing yourself to face the next couple of weeks on your own. Except you weren't alone. A big ass dog sat patiently at your bedside, tongue wagging and panting softly with a note tied to his collar. 
Take care of the dog while I'm gone. P.S. Don't let him eat my stuff.  -One. 
You named the dog Wally. 
···
Three's arrival was really something. 
He was the complete opposite of Two. His easy going nature actually reminded you a lot of One. They were alike in a lot of ways, but maybe that's why they did not get along very well. Honestly, you could only stand the both of them in the same room for so long. 
But he was nice. And he talked to you. Your conversations weren't anything particularly deep. One's rules forbid any of you from revealing personal details about your old lives. Mostly you discussed movies and TV shows. 
Regardless, you lived for those benign conversations. They provided a brief intermission to the insane turn your life had taken. 
···
One could tell you were struggling. 
Wally the dog was only so much company.
You were adrift with nowhere to go, no one to turn to. 
Your old life was gone and the only people left in your life was One, Two, and Three. They all had their own issues and it wasn't like you had any shared life experience with the older adults. 
So maybe One had an ulterior motive when he recruited Four. 
The first day the Skywalker showed up with his still healing bruises and luminous blue eyes, you laughed until your face turned red. 
"Skywalker? We're not seriously going to call him that are we?" you wheezed in One's direction, swiping tears from the corner of your eye.
One opened his mouth, the perfect retort poised on his tongue before you swiftly cut him off. 
"Is he a fucking Jedi? Are you are Jedi?" 
Your raucous laughter had faded into barely stifled giggles as you looked at Four. 
He sighed. "Are you done? I need a drink." 
He brushed past you as you were still reeling from the spine tingling deep tenor of his voice paired with that accent. Now your face was flushed for a different reason. 
"Hey, be easy on him. He just watched his own funeral, which was somehow more depressing than a normal funeral should be," One told you, making you feel like a dick. 
···
Five was a godsend. Though, if One ever heard you admit it, you were sure his ego would explode at being compared with a god. 
You were just happy to be around the closest thing to a civilian. 
“You like him, don’t you? Number Four?” she asked you with a knowing grin. 
Almost immediately your face went red. “I don’t know what you mean. Who? Me?” 
Wow. Real subtle, you thought, cringing. 
Yeah, you weren’t fooling anyone, especially Five. You wondered if any of the other ghosts knew about your crush on Four. 
They did. But no one said anything. 
···
Six figured it out within hours of meeting you and proceeded to tease you relentlessly. 
So much for millennial solidarity.  
The longer he was around, though, he  became like an older brother to you. You couldn’t imagine what life would be like without him.
···
With One’s team of ghosts finally assembled, Two insisted on a mandatory training exercise to assess how well everyone worked together. You had no fucking idea why she wanted you to attend this exercise. One had already made it very clear that you were not part of the mission. But you suspected she was actually trying to do you a favor. 
The self defense pointers were useful, you supposed. Being paired with Four was… embarrassing and definitely Two’s idea of a joke. 
On the other hand, you were finally seeing a different side of Four. A more arrogant, carefree side that made you laugh not to mention pine a hundred times harder than you were before. 
Just when you were starting to have fun throwing Four around on a mat, Two steered you towards a makeshift gun range.
It had been a while since you held a gun and considering what happened the last time you did…
Needless to say you were pretty shaky afterwards, teetering on the verge of spiralling into a flashback and Four couldn’t help but notice. 
···
Later, when you were hunkered down in One’s office mindlessly rewatching Leave It To Beaver episodes Four surprised you by joining you. 
He didn’t say anything for a while, content to just sit and watch the little TV as you tried to ignore him. 
"So how did you get pulled into all this, really?" he spoke up, finally as the credits started rolling. 
You took your time answering. That was the billion dollar question that One had repeatedly forbid any of them from answering. Except, you wanted to tell someone if only to justify being a ghost. If you could get anyone on the team to believe that someone as unremarkable as you wouldn't be here if you had a choice. 
You steadfastly avoided looking into his curious green eyes. 
"I grew up in a small town. I was fairly popular in school. Got good grades. I was accepted into a good University in a big city..." 
Oh boy, you were veering into monologue territory and you could feel the old wounds tearing open. 
"There was… this cop. At a protest. He assaulted me and it was... bad. I woke up in the hospital with this guy telling me to keep my mouth shut. He… he threatened me. For weeks. Him and his buddies. Painted me as a criminal even though I didn’t fucking do anything wrong.  Finally I just said 'fuck it' and made a whole video about what this asshole did to me. Which turned out to be a mistake. Shocker, I know. He cornered me the next day and he was drunk-" 
You bit your lip hard, desperately fighting back tears. Four’s gaze burned where you could feel it on your face. God, what was he thinking right now? You wanted to know. He had been silent so far, listening intently as you told him about the worst moment of your life.
“Fucking pigs,” he muttered under his breath, his lip curling in disgust. 
Swallowing the lump of emotion building in your throat, you continued, "I defended myself. And that's how One found me. Over this cop's dead body. I was going to go to jail because who would ever believe I killed a cop in self defense? So, One helped me fake my death and gave me a second chance. To this day, I still have no idea why he was there when I needed him the most. It wasn't even to recruit me. He just helped me because he could. The whole Turgistan thing came later."  
At last, you glanced at Four from the corner of your eye to see his reaction. 
His brows were knitted together and he had a serious expression on his face you weren’t accustomed to seeing him sport before. 
“I’m glad One was there to help you or I might not have ever met you.” 
This boy was too good to be true. 
“I'd like to get to know you better, if that’s alright.” 
You were quietly crying at this point, but you nodded, smiling through the tears. “I’d like that.”

So we watched (nay, Experienced) the BBC/Netflix Dracula series
Brought to us by everyone’s favourite team, Steve Moff and Mark Gatiss, promising to be an innovative and exciting new vision of the classic novel
Boy it was definitely something!!!
First I will say: obviously Moff is not my favourite TV writer and my fam and I did go into this with a bias. I’m happy to report, though, that it’s going to be one of these shows that haunts me forever, because if it had just been bad I could have said “bleh” and deleted it from my brain. But because parts of this were genuinely cool, interesting, and fun, and parts of it genuinely had potential, all the bits that were bad stand out as so much worse and the whole thing feels as cursed as a 500 year old undead count. 
Things that were enjoyable and well put-together:
Van Helsing has been gender-swapped into a vampire-hunting nun and her cat-and-mouse game with Dracula is rife with belligerent sexual tension. I was ready to hate this, and ready for like, Sherlock and Irene Adler 2.0, but their dynamic was actually pretty fun to watch! Their power balance is kept even throughout most of the show, and Helsing is never struck down because of ~womanly failings~ or infantilised. She’s consistently really clever and, even if there are some cringey one-liners, I found her and Draccy’s playful quest to murder each other one of the most fun parts of the show. It could’ve been better, but it was enjoyable! (I also like how Helsing isn’t Young and Hot, but is a capable older lady, and her actor and Draccy’s even seem about the same age. Amazing)
The second episode is a spooky murder mystery/horror mini-movie on a ship, with a cast full of interesting characters who all had different things going on and different relationship dynamics that were compelling to watch. There’s even an interracial gay couple! And they’re like, written pretty sympathetically and to be layered and flawed in ways that didn’t feel too stereotypical! And they don’t die first!! Wack! I understand the bar is on the ground, but it’s still worth a mention
Some fun with vampire lore: Draccy absorbs knowledge and traits from people he drinks blood from (which is how he learns languages. Get Duolingo, dude, stop eating people), leading to the intriguing suggestion that myths like “vampires will die in sunlight” and “vampires are afraid of holy symbols” have kinda become real to him even if they don’t literally work, because he’s swallowed so many people to whom these superstitions and beliefs were law. I’m sure this isn’t the first time this has been done, but groundbreaking or no it was kinda neat
Things that were not enjoyable and well put-together:
EVERYTHING ELSE
Episode 1: a weird speedrun of most of the original novel, feat. weaponised nuns and a weird fixation on whether or not Jonathan Harker and Draccy boned. They did not. Dracula pops out of the body of a wolf and he’s Whole Ass Naked. Him and Van Helsing have a power play where she stands just on the threshold of a convent and calls him a little bitch, knowing he can’t come and get her. A knife is licked. 
Episode 2: aforementioned cool ship horror story. Definitely the best ep. It really makes me think about hbomb’s critique that Moff is pretty good at doing standalone stories (and pilots), but when things are tied into a bigger narrative things get zonkers. 
Episode 3: Things Get Zonkers!!
Let me just. Okay. I have the most to say about this one because this is where things really got batshit. And yet, also really boring? How does that figure? Anyway:
Dracula emerges from under the sea and finds that 123 years have passed and he’s now the star of a Modern AU. Upon setting foot on British sand he is immediately accosted by what appears to be an anti-vampire task force. There’s a helicopter. It is later explained how they knew to pounce on him at this exact moment, but holy god it was wild to watch the entire British Secret Service descend on this one wet bastard in a suit
The editing shifts aggressively in the direction of Sherlock. Mark Gattis is there playing an amazingly annoying character. There’s a fuckign.... Underground Secret Society devoted to studying vampires and they put Drac in a Designated Glass Prison for Smug Geniuses (also as seen in Sherlock). Van Helsing is dead but her great-great-grand-niece is played by the same actress and. Okay. Van Helsing, vampire hunting nun, possesses her descendent and rises through the ether to roast Drac one last time, and he’s DELIGHTED TO SEE HER AGAIN. 
And she has cancer, right, so her blood is poisonous when Draccy tries to bite her, but in the end, right, the end of the episode, right, the final shots of the show, he comes to a place where he’s willing to die, and she’s already dying, and so he drinks her blood and they die together on a table while cinematic metaphor vision shows them having sex in the middle of the sun

There was a badly CGI-ed vampire baby. Jonathan Harker falls from a tower and a scene later they flash back to this event by reversing the footage of him falling down, meaning we just see him go VWOOP up through the air, bouncing off the wall on the way. Van Helsing says the words “come boy, suckle” when she’s goading Drac into drinking her blood. The show sits in a weird middle ground where the characters talk about sex a lot (”dID yOu HaVe sExUaL iNterCOURSE with COUNT DRACULA?”) and Drac is clearly meant to be super magnetic and sexy but the characterisation and cinematography is not horny at all. People have these sexy-type dreams of their lover of choice when Drac is drinking their blood but even those are very boring and weirdly chaste, except of course for the final one where, if I  can take the chance to remind you, Van Helsing and Dracula have symbolic Mind Palace sex inside the centre of the solar system

I can’t speak too much on its quality as an adaptation since I actually haven’t read the book, but splitting the story so that some characters (the Harkers, Van Helsing) existed in the time the story is set, and some (Lucy, Dr Seward) exist in The Modern AU felt very strange. Was there any reason to set the third episode in modern times, apart from the fact that I guess they wanted to do their Sherlock thing again? Or, perhaps, because they wanted to do their Jekyll thing again?? Oh my god, that’s what the editing reminds me of - the small clips of Jekyll I’ve seen. The zooming. The slow-mo. The emphasis on The Monster Man’s weird goddamn teeth
(Also, I don’t really feel qualified to dig too deep into it, but I will say there felt something a bit uncomfortable about Lucy being black in this version, while also being written to be very promiscuous and vain. idk. Also, since it happened in an ep of Sherlock as well, “weedy white Nice Boy rescues the Very Cool woman of colour he has a tragically unrequited crush on” is now an official Moffattis trope)
Count Moffatula is an experience. Its pacing is buck wild. The speeding through the original plot and the mish-mashing of elements in the Modern AU section feels like another expression of contempt for the source material on Moff’s part. Someone says “reality is overrated” in a show set in the 1890s. Draccy quotes a Beatles song. He also makes quippy allusions to having eaten various famous figures and basically winks at the camera every time. Granted, this wasn’t as obnoxious as I was maybe expecting, but there are still too many lines of dialogue where you think “oh, the writers high-fived each other after they wrote that one, huh”. The fact that Moff has such vitriol against fan fic writers is more and more grating every day because this is so, so clearly a zany-ass fanfic that he happens to be getting paid for. The costumes are nowhere near as nice as they could have been, and Dracula’s cape looks like his mum made it for him for the school play in which he is playing Dracula. 
This show is So Much. Watch it to share in this fever dream. Or don’t, and save approximately 5 hours of your life. God. 5 hours. Who was I before Count Maffatula. Who am I now. Why was his cape so bloody ugly. Why did they bone in the centre of the sun

I mean, they’re all book characters, so aesthetic attraction doesn’t have much chance to kick in, but Temuera Morrison is nice generally, I guess. And Gena & Izzy fancast Dichen Lachman for Besany & Dichen Lachman is STUNNING. 
Character I would marry:
hah. hah. they’d eat me alive. Well. Darman’s a sweetheart, but I could never. Etain is my heart, but I think we’d squabble.
I read Niner as demi-romantic or aro & ace, and I’m some flavor of “wtf is happening” aro & ace, so I could relate there,  and relate to the anxiety/grumpiness/feeling responsible but like, idk about long term compatibility.
OR I remember a fmk game one time where I chose “Jaing with the understanding it was some long-distance tax scheme and then we divorce amicably and go away rich/richer”. That still works.
Character I would be best friends with:
I would want to be friends with Etain or Darman or Niner (it might be a lot of fun to gossip w/ Niner, honestly) or Besany but again, my experiences/skill set/ level of interesting-ness are all kinda too far removed from theirs for them to have a reason to give me the time of day, much less bond.

Unpopular in some parts of the fandom, but not in mine, but like. Kal. If you follow this blog, you know what I mean.
Jusik is three great moments and a whole bunch of annoying as shit authorial morality pronouncements in a trench coat. He had so much potential, but like Kal, lived up to less than none of it. And in his “Gotab” identity I want to throat punch him.
My Canon OTP:
Dar/Etain.
My Non-canon OTP:
Dar/Etain/Rhedian, or if not including OCs, Jilka/Ruusaan. It just has SO MUCH potential.
Most Badass Character:
I think a requirement to being on this main cast is being some flavor of bad ass. Etain the unexpectedly/deceptively tiny but fierce Jedi, Laseema who doesn’t have any military or special background but learns to defend herself and her place in the world  after a terrible past and keep up with all the people who do, Besany the treasury spy and Jilka her best friend who corners Hutts for a thrills,  any given clone who is automatically a super soldier by default... like... it’s a requirement. 
Most Epic Villain:
Uthan when allowed to be herself.
But for the record, I just had to sit and think and count “wait who’s the villain in each book” because with the exceptions of Hokan (who gets pov chapters and is shitty as hell), Uthan (who is ruthless as shit and a major player in the eventual cure), and Ko Sai (who is... Ko Sai)... most of the other folk on the other side of the battle field aren’t even villains, they’re just antagonists and they’re just... there. Which is a major departure for SW when you think about it.
So like, the choices here are only Ko Sai ( *thumbs down*), Hokan (little pretentious pos), and Uthan. Uthan a la Hard Contact wins easily.
Pairing I am not a fan of:
Fi/Parja majorly squicks me out except for when Kaz writes it. but like. Canon Fi/Parja has so many boundary issues that make me uncomfortable.
JUSIK/ARLA like WHAT THE FUCK. Biggest NOTP.
Gilamar/Uthan. A softer nope, because I’ve seen fanon versions done well, but not at all a fan of canon Gilamar/Uthan from 501st.
Ny/Kal because Ny did NOTHING to deserve that.
Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another):
Hah! HAH! How much time you got?
Kal- not who KT thought she was giving us at all
Jusik a handful of great moments attached to what ultimately fails as a fleshed out, meaningful character with a lot of lost potential
Ovolot Qail ‘suddenly a middle age career woman who can be manipulated by her regret at never having ~children~ as soon as Kal looks at her’ Uthan. 
Parja, who has all this potential, but KT uses as a mouthpiece for some sexist/ablelist/uncomfortable shit.
Jilka- she can still be sharp/judgy/social/a tad vain, but just let her and Besany be friends and also avoid actively shoving her in a gold-digger sterotype in book 4 (book 3? when Ordo gives Besany the sapphire) and then a random out of the blue romance with Corr, of all people, to “soften her up” in ImpComm.
Jinart is not a character, she’s a whole bunch of mean shit the author wanted to say in black fur, and that makes it hard to feel at all sympathetic to or conflicted about the gurlanin, even when KT wants us too

oh god, I could NEVER choose just one. 
Niner & Dar and Dar & Fi & Atin & Etain (or what we have in those tiny implied moments) and Ordo & Mereel and Mereel & Etain and Ordo & Etain and Mereel & Besany , the hypothetical SNARK /GRUMP friendship in my head that would be Niner & Jilka, Maze & Ordo...
like... it’s all so good. they’re all so good. and there’s somebody I’m forgetting on my list here, I know it, but I just can’t think of it right now.

unfinished brooke x katya hatefuck fic
hi yall :^) so ive had this sitting in my drafts for a WHILE and ive barely dented the actual planned plot but still i felt like it was kind of a waste of what i did write to not ?? idk do something with it? this was originally written for AQ’s rarepair event but irl stuff got in the way so it never got finished, and i kinda lost the inspo to finish it (for now? idk) so here it is, posted unedited in however it was when i last touched it
brooke x katya hatefuck, (well, planned, i obv hadnt written that far) inspired by pics of trixie and brooke together that one time they were weirdly hanging out a lot irl and that one outfit brooke has that looks like that one outfit katya has the polkadot one u know it
“Ugh, I swear, Vi! She really has something against me! I think she hates me!”
Katya punctuates her sentence with a flail of her arms for emphasis before flopping back onto her bed. Violet just rolls her eyes at her roommate’s dramatics, as per usual. This is the third time they’ve had this conversation this week.
“So she’s a little icy, what of it? It’s not like you’re not used to having a mega bitch around, you live with me,” Violet responds plainly, not even bothering to look up from her laptop, “and I don’t think anybody could hate you, Kat.”
Katya huffs at that. “No, I swear, she hates me.”
Katya Zamolodchikova is absolutely sure of three things in her university life: One, Trixie Mattel is her best friend. Two, nothing gets in between her and Trixie. Three, Brooke Lynn Hytes is absolutely making her best fucking attempt.
Katya and Trixie had met last year, Katya being a sophomore in visual arts and Trixie a freshman in musical theater, when Katya had accidentally crashed Ginger’s (kind of pathetic) attempt at being a tour guide for the freshmen of her course. They’ve only known each other for a year, but ever since then the two quickly became inseparable and a year had felt like a lifetime. All of their friends knew, and Katya held it close to her heart, that nothing could possibly stand in their way. That is, until the beginning of this semester.
Trixie had been elected as class representative at the start of their sophomore year, which did not surprise Katya one bit. But that meant that when Canadian exchange student Brooke Lynn Hytes had arrived for the semester, it was Trixie’s job to show her around and make her feel welcomed. And being that Brooke’s degree in classical dance meant her and Trixie had quite a few overlapping classes, the two hit it off and had gotten closer and closer since. It’s only half way through the semester, yet Katya feels as though she’s slowly becoming more and more of a background character in Trixie’s life. They still text each other when they can, but hangout times have slowly grown increasingly thin and so has Katya’s sanity. Not that it’s Trixie’s fault, of course…
“I can’t explain it. But I promise, it’s almost like she’s purposefully occupying Trixie from me! Every time it looks like we might get a chance to even just talk, she’s there coming round the corner asking Trixie for help in one of their classes or for show recs or whatever. And she always looks me dead in the eye, with her stupid fucking smirk, like she knows what she just did! I can’t explain the feeling I get when I see her!”
Katya’s hit full ranting steam now, half hanging off her bed still flailing as animated as ever.
Violet shuts her laptop and turns to face her. “Mama, sounds like you hate her. Sure it’s not just in your head because you’re jealous the amazon’s occupying your barbie?”
There’s a beat of silence. “Jealous? I guess?” Katya scrunches up her face and sits up. “I mean, how could I not be? With her stupid long legs and her flowing blonde hair, like god, Vi, she’s practically perfect! And have you seen her dance?”
Katya turns to pose her question, but Violet is just staring, giving her a look she can’t decipher. She continues,
“So then, fine, of course I’m jealous, but that’s because Trix is my best friend. I barely see her anymore, and when I do she’s always there and I just get so riled up! And I’m sure Trix has started to notice because god I just can’t stand it when she’s near, it just sets me alight in an awful way. I’ve never felt this way about anybody before!” And it’s true, Katya really does not think of herself as someone capable of fully hating someone else. But by god, is Brooke really testing that.
Violet scoffs, turning away to open her laptop once more. “Look Mary, all I gotta say is that that’s an awful lot of emotion for some best friend jealousy. Also, you have a lecture starting in ten minutes.”
Fuck! Katya checks her watch and immediately jumps up to scramble for her belongings, deeply thankful for her roommate’s type A tendencies yet internally chastising herself for allowing her ranting to consume her time like that. She quickly kisses Violet on the cheek and bids her farewell before putting on her boots and heading out of their dorm room to make her best effort to speed walk to class.
But as luck would have it, not that Katya has a lot of it, she quite literally walks right into the subject of their prior conversation. Well, speak of the devils…
“Oh! Trixie, hi!” Katya laughs, immediately reacting to steady Trixie from where Katya had almost knocked her over with the door. From the way she was standing, she figured she had opened the door just as Trixie was about knock.
“Katya! Thank god, I was worried you wouldn’t be in,” Trixie smiles back brightly, smoothing her fluffy golden hair back into place. (Not that it’s ever really out of place, Katya thinks to herself.) 
Katya smiles at her, a sight for sore eyes she thinks, but when she realizes Brooke is standing at the end of the hall waiting for Trixie, her smile doesn’t quite reach her eyes. Whether Trixie noticed Katya’s tension or not, she didn’t let on. At least Brooke had the decency to wait at a reasonable distance.
“Uh, yeah, I was just heading out though,” Katya replies, trying her best to look sympathetic. She doesn’t mind that she’s running late anymore, just feels bad she even has to go. “But did you need something?”
Trixie looks equally as sympathetic. “Yeah, uh, listen, I’m really sorry. I know we haven’t been able to hang recently and I’m really sorry for that, midterms and all…”
“Hey, it’s alright, I knew you were busy. It’s no problem, really.” That’s a lie.
“But now that it’s over, let’s celebrate! Let me make it up to you? Be my date to the Edwards party tonight?”
Katya’s smile softens. As much as she was planning to trade in the party for a well-deserved movie night in with Violet and Pearl, she finds she really can’t say no to Trixie, especially not when she’s looking at her like an apologetic puppy. Whipped.
“Down for anything with you, Barbie. Meet you at the dorm hall at 8?”
Trixie squeals and picks Katya up by the middle, “AAAAAAAH yes!! See you bitch!!”
Katya squirms violently to be put down but laughs it off anyway. She really can’t be too mad at her best friend.
“Anyway, I gotta run, see you later Trix!” She rushes to hug Trixie quickly once more before escaping as briskly yet casually as she can out the door. This fails her when all semblance of casualty is lost as she passes the point where Brooke is, all tall and blonde and beautiful even just standing around. As she passes, her gaze quite obviously steels ahead to avoid looking Brooke in the eye, but she can’t fail to catch the quite obvious smug smirk the Canadian has posed on her painted lips.

Katya managed to make it to class with only 5 minutes late, thankfully just as her professor was entering the other door. She plops down into her usual seat with an audible groan and immediately drops her head in her hands.
Brooke. Stupid fucking Brooke Lynn Hytes. Lately, Katya’s wandering thoughts always go back to her. There hasn’t been a time where her idle time hasn’t been haunted by a certain ballerina chipping away at her precious concentration. She sees perfect long blonde hair, icy blue eyes, and tone legs that go all the way up. 
If she’s being completely honest with herself, she is just a bit jealous of Brooke but not for the reasons Violet insinuates. I mean, sure, she misses Trixie to bits. But that’s only one of the many straws on the camel that is Katya’s completely rational anger. 
It’s not that she’s perfect, either, but that sure adds another straw. Seemingly introverted, but able to capture the hearts of anyone in her path through quick and honest charm. Graceful and poised, where Katya is not, and tall and curvy, where Katya is not. Katya really doesn’t understand how someone can attend 7am dance classes with a flawless mug and still leave rehearsals with not an eyelash out of place, it’s inhuman.
No, it’s that no matter how much others testify on her behalf, Katya does not understand it. She doesn’t know what she did, but she has somehow done something to aggravate Brooke against her, and it bothers her endlessly that she doesn’t even know what she did to incur such spite. Katya doesn’t see any of the charm or kindness that others profess, only smug smirks and cocky passive-aggressive jabs and a seemingly passionate desire to find any way she can to poke Katya’s buttons and prompt some kind of response. She’s lucky Katya has a lot more self control than most, and she’s restrained herself from biting back thus far.
She thinks back to the first time she spotted Brooke, on the first day of the semester when Katya had gotten bored and decided to drop in on Trixie’s representative duties despite explicit instructions not to intrude. She had found her in one of the gardens of the student commons, and instinctively made her way to run up and tackle her before realizing Trixie wasn’t alone and stopping dead in her tracks.
Trixie was sitting next to someone Katya didn’t recognize, which was a surprise in itself because Katya knew next to everybody personally in their modestly sized arts college.  The girl was sitting next to Trixie on a bench, both hands holding one of Trixie’s own as Trixie appeared to animatedly be telling some story. Trixie then finally noticed Katya frozen standing awkwardly at some distance and paused in the middle of her speech to yell at Katya and becon her over. 
“Katya! This is Brooke Lynn, a Canadian exchange student for the semester. Brooke, this is Katya, my best friend!”
Brooke lazily shifted her gaze from Trixie to give Katya the once over, glancing her up and down. Whatever she saw, she suddenly stood up and crowded into Katya’s space, gazing down at her intensely directly from the advantage their clear height difference gave her.
“Well, it’s certainly nice to meet you… Katya.” 
And on her lips, the same painted red smirk. The same stupid smirk that would continuously haunt her until…
“Kat, you with us girl?” Hissed Pearl in her ear, jabbing her hard in the side.

Mmk It’s gonna be long tho so it’s going under a cut
Penultimate Peril Part 1
very accurate to the books! any changes made sense within the context of the show and worked
gorgeous aesthetics, strongest opening of any episode aside from Bad Beginning
only minus points because of Sporty Kit but she’s in it so little and the rest of it is so good that it doesn’t even matter
Max Greenfield as the Denouements was phenomenal
I actually liked the part where they try to make us think Kit was shacking up with Ernest, it was clever
Also I actually like the green uniform, I think it’s a more flattering colour on the actors than red would have been
Dewey’s death scene was amazingly shot and acted
I would die for Sunny in her toddler uniform. That being said in this episode if you look closely you can in fact see the light from the ipad they used to get her to look in the right direction
Reptile Room Part 1
Once again, gorgeous aesthetics and incredible book accuracy
Minus points for the spyglass subplot
Higher than part 2 because of Aasif Mandvi’s wonderful portrayal of Monty
I love the conservatory reptile room
Reptile Room Part 2
Very book accurate and entertaining
This is the episode where Violet’s outfits begin to slap
Minus points because with Monty’s death they made the colour grading less bright which makes sense but is less fun to look at
Also not a fan of how comedic and bafoonish the troupe is, it’s really more of an overall problem but it really just undermines how impactful Monty’s death is
Bad Beginning Part 2
Let’s be real, the Bad Beginning episodes were the most book accurate of the whole show
Loved the entire Marvelous Marriage bit, the play and marriage were done spectacularly
Lots of Jewish references, we stan
I actually like Jacquelyn’s presence in the first season, it works and adds a new element to the story
I also like Gustav being a major part of this episode because we never saw him in the original books and it’s nice to see his character before he dies (also symbolism with his death and Dewey’s)
Hostile Hospital Part 2
Do I even need to explain why this is so high on the list?
Higher than the first part because of the absolute horror of the whole operating theatre, it’s done so well
The aesthetics and filming work perfectly to underline the horror of everything
Only so low because I personally am not a fan of horror aesthetics
Bad Beginning Part 1
Once again, Bad Beginning episodes were the most book accurate and I love Jacquelyn
Strongest opening of any episode aside from Pentultimate 1
Only so low because of the cheesy CGI and NPH’s comedic Olaf
Hostile Hospital Part 1
ESME IN THE LIBRARY OF RECORDS HOLY FUCK
Low because aside from Esme being fucking fabulous in that scene I found the rest of the episode to be a bit boring at times
However, very accurate to the books and the chase scene in Last Chance was sufficiently freaky, as was the scaring Babs scene
For that matter, absolutely loved that we got to see Babs
Penultimate Peril Part 2
The Baudelaires in the trial scene made me🥺
The scene with Justice Strauss and Olaf with the kids was amazing
The ending made me cry
So low because of the opera scene, like how many issues did that have? It was pretty though
Also low for confirming Justice Strauss to have survived the fire, we don’t like getting answers to our questions
AND ANOTHER THING Esme’s ending was really lackluster? To the point of just being shitty? Especially given that while she is comedic, Lucy Punch hasn’t played up the comedy aspect of her character as much as NPH has, so Esme feels scarier and like more of a villain at this point so giving her that ending really fell flat
A very strong ending that really should have been the ending to the whole story
Grim Grotto Part 2
Grim Grotto was brought so low because of the absence of Widdershins but at least with part two you can pretend the first part had him and he left like in the books
Ansolutely in love with the submarines and Esme’s dress
Grim Grotto was one of my favorite books of the series as a kid so naturally it’s gonna be pretty high on the list
Also I think K Todd Freeman brings a needed likeability to Mr Poe, so when th Baudelaires are on Briny Beach again you do get the feeling they’re torn between going with him or Kit. Like they distrust and dislike him at this point but they don’t want to distrust him
Slippery Slope Part 2
The sinister duo are fab
Sunny is at her cutest in this episode, we’re talking peak cute
It’s pretty low because there’s a lot of stuff in the headquarters with Quigley that got cut, didn’t really make much of a difference but I missed it
I feel like Esme in the headquarters had so much potential to be as freaky as her Library of Records scene and it just fell short
Ersatz Elevator Part 2
Minus points for the VFD subplot but part 2 had less of that which is why it’s higher
Also in the ranking of Sunny being the cutest, this episode comes in at a close second to Slippery Slope
That being said overall I really adored the aesthetics of both episodes, absolutely love the mix of film noir and art deco
Jerome at the In Auction was amazing but Larry, Jacquelyn, Olivia, and Jacques was less so
Also still not a fan of the writing of the Quagmires
Ersatz Elevator Part 1
Once again, adore the aesthetics
Love the casting for the Squalors
Gunther’s disguise was *chef’s kiss*
so low because of the VFD subplot and the gratuitous musical number
That being said I did like the cuts between Keep Chasing Your Schemes and the Baudelaires finding the Quagmires, it worked well
Grim Grotto Part 1
Very low because of the absence of Widdershins and what this did to Fiona’s character
In general the way they wrote Fiona’s character was even less sympathetic than the books
Why, dear god, oh why was Quigley at Anwhistle Aquatics
Why, dear god, oh why does the Medusoid Mycelium look like that
Carnivorous Carnival Part 1
This was in fact my all time favorite book in the series as a kid and I just remember being a little disappointed I guess? By the episodes and I could never put my finger on why
Olivia’s character 😒
Higher than the second episode because I do love the creepy carnival feel and the feeling of unease before the Baudelaires know who Madame Lulu is
Also Esme’s gold outfit
As far as gratuitous musical numbers go, I do enjoy House of Freaks
Carnivorous Carnival Part 2
Cool carnival aesthetics
Chabo the wolf baby is adorable
Olivia’s death was more impactful and upsetting than Jacques’s, I’m just gonna say it
We miss a morally gray neutral character who is more interesting than a copy pasted Jacquelyn/Mrs Quagmire
Wide Window Part 2
This is really only so low because the colour grading is still kinda dull and it works within the episode but also makes it boring to look at
That being said the whole Hurricane Herman scene was phenomenal

The Colours in this episode were pretty, with the Lavender Lighthouse and the raincoats
Violet’s outfits remain slapping
The change to Josephine’s character is a good change (until season two when they do that to every single other character and take away any and all moral ambiguity but still)
Slippery Slope Part 1

I did love the Mortmain Mountains set
so low for the killing of the freaks, Sporty Kit, and for the heavy handed way they got rid of Jacquelyn
Wide Window Part 1
Boring and dull
Only this high because of Violet’s poppin outfits, the beautiful set, and Alfre Woodard as Josephine
Also the Captain Sham disguise is my favorite after Gunther
Austere Academy Part 2
The only reason part two is so high is because it has more Carmelita
who is the only good bit of these episodes
Like they’re both relatively book accurate, especially with the casting but like
I did not think it possible to make the Quagmires in this book more boring and yet
I get that it’s supposed to be dark and gloomy and depressing but it shouldn’t be so much that people just don’t want to watch it
Sunny running after the Quagmires in her little uniform does put this episode at like number 5 in her cuteness ranking though so points for that
Miserable Mill Part 2
While I miss the sword fight, I do understand why it was changed so I can accept it
Part 2 is higher because of Georgina’s slappin purple pantsuit
As far as MM goes I did actually like it but it still is kinda boring in comparison to the rest of the episodes
But I did like the mill scenes and Sir
Also a really strong ending that sets up season two nicely
Miserable Mill Part 1
See above
A little lower that Part 2 because of more Quagmire scenes
I actually liked the Quagmire scenes in season one and how it was handled but less so in this episode? Maybe it was the cheesy effects with the fighting
Also CGI Sunny. Her least cute episode
Vile Village Part 2
Vile Village was definitely one of my favorite books and I was so disappointed by the episodes
While I liked the western aesthetic, I don’t think it felt right with the feel of the book
Also crow nazis
Now that Jacques is dead there’s no bad VFD subplot so that’s why it’s higher than part 1
I really like how they handled Sunny not being able to take her first steps because she’s too old now. This is also definitely a good episode for the Sunny Being Cute scale
Vile Village Part 1
I really think the only thing this episode has going for it is the costumes, specifically Violet and Sunny’s
the watercolor dress, flannel, overalls, jesse hat, tricolor dress? fashion legends
disappointing, kinda boring, bland to look at, horrible VFD subplot, D+V???, bad CGI
however cute donkey
also a fan of Esme’s accent, idk what it’s supposed to be but it made my russian friend laugh
Austere Academy Part 1
Same as the first part however less Carmelita and Larry and Jacquelyn are at their most useless
Just the least entertaining episode overall
The End
honestly do I even need to explain this
I get what they were going for with the pink sheep and I quite like the tents but the pink robes were not flattering on anyone
Kit. Sugar. why is she in a white dress? when did she have time to change? overt christian symbolism after 14 episodes of Jewishness. Ishmael founded VFD. Ishmael can walk
The bad CGI. I haven’t seen CGI this bad since season one
The arboretum was disappointing and didn’t give the feel of years worth of buildup and it didn’t feel like the Baudelaires could live off of this stuff
That being said I loved chapter fourteen and BL

So I have thoughts on tlou2 I need to get out.
I haven’t finished watching the game but i've seen enough to feel a certain way Spoiler warning for those who haven't finished the game.
I genuinely cannot understand the logic behind the sequence of the game. Joel is murdered by Abby about an hour into the game. We get to play Abby for a short amount of time before it happens but at no point during that time are we made to feel anything for her. It's far too short of a time for us to care about her. Yet ND expects us to later feel conflicted about her actions.
We’re not stupid. We understand why Abby wanted Joel dead. The thing is we as players/viewers have years of attachment to Joel. We have bonded with him and care for him. So them expecting us to care about his killer just because they show us her life before she killed Joel and force the player to play as her is ridiculous.
The players view and feelings for Abby are tainted an hour into the game.Then you play as Ellie getting revenge, which imo is fine, I personally have no problems with a revenge story. Anyway you go through all this shit with Ellie, you take out these people who want Ellie dead, even before she kills anyone btw. We see the people who helped kill Joel and they’re assholes. So once again we see them as villains. Why shouldn't I cheer Ellie on?(besides the obvious of the effects it take on Ellie and her life)
Again I get there motivations but like Ellie says at one point, they're out to kill anyone who shows up in there area, not even making sure people aren’t in need of help. They are not exactly coming off as the nicest. They come off as bad guys yet were later asked to see them as people who are just like Ellie. They were wronged by Joel and so they seek out revenge. Its simple but it really isnt that easy. Even if them being standoffish is logical in this world people will still always associate the bad guys as the ones who kill anyone without giving them a chance. 
How many villains become villains because of revenge and are simply bad guys. Giving them a motivation isnt enough to make them interesting and much less make them sympathetic. Of course it's needed and helps but it's not all you need to make a interesting grey character.
Joel himself is a good example of a character that is not strictly a good person. He kills a bunch of doctors to selfishly keep a girl he’s grown to love and see as a daughter alive. He makes choices that you can argue are wrong yet we sympathise with him. Through the progression of the game we learn to care for him so when we get to the ending we now understand Joel. We fully understand how fucked up it is but we also get where Joel is coming from. We know the fire he’s playing with. The choice he makes and the lie he now carries. The first game does a wonderful job of giving us a flawed morally grew character.
Tlou2 does not. It fails miserably. It tries to force and manipulate the player by making them play Abby. It tries to manipulate you with pregnant Mel parallelling Ellie’s pregnant girlfriend, Dina. Using lazy tactics like flashbacks showing Abby’s loving dad being a cool dad who rescues animals and is playful with his daughter. Yet Abby is such an uninspiring character. She just isnt likeable. You have to be able to like a character to be able to sympathize with them, Just showing me that her dad was great and loving, isnt enough. Showing me Mel was pregnant, Owen was struggling, Manny was caring about his friends isnt enough. Yes it's good that they are being humanized but it all feels far to late and fleeting (even though her playable time is so long and god damn boring ass hell).
ND tells us these people are humans just like Ellie. They are flawed just like Ellie. Don't you feel conflicted? Don't you feel for Abby, who lost her father? 
but frankly I dont feel anything for any of them. I feel for Ellie who lost her father figure. I feel for Ellie who slowly loses herself. I feel for Jesse who loved his ex and his best friend and didn't care they got together. I feel for Jesse who died before getting to see his child. I feel for Dina who never got to directly tell Jesse of her pregnancy. I feel for Dina’s unborn child. 
Its laugable that ND gave us Dina and Jesse yet thought we’d be feeling things for Owen and Abby who have sex when Mel is carrying Owens child. Am I supposed to feel bad for them because they didn't get together when they were younger? Am I supposed to feel bad for Abby when Ellie killed Mel, when Abby betrayed her herself? 
Abby and friends where always going to have a uphill battle to be seen as more than villains yet it feels like ND did the bare minimum to them likable.
I will never understand why they didn’t introduce us to these character first so we could get to know them before our view of them was stained by Joel’s death. The game can only be so long so I get not having a lot of time to make us care which is why im kinda baffled they even went this route. Not that its impossible to do.
Then there's Joel’s death. Boy oh boy was it so underwhelming. I felt sad but honestly it was fairly fast and I felt like I had no time to really feel much. One moment he’s being beaten the next we’re with Ellie then we find him and bam he's dead in a few more minutes. I'm not saying it should have been some long drawn out sequence but it all happens to fast. I would have liked to get reacquainted to him before he died. See him and Ellie together more again. It would have hit so much harder then. Instead we see him a two(?) times then he’s dead. That's it. The main character of the first game is done. 
I know how it ends and what happens but im waiting to see it to. I want to see it and see what my feelings are but i'm not excited. What i've read sounds dumb frankly but we'll see i guess. 
I dont even hate the game or the plot. Fuck im not even mad about Joel dying. Hell I dont think id even be mad about him dying so soon if he’d have died in a better written scene. I just genuinely think the way it happened was so poorly written. It all feels lazy and badly put together. It feels like they think we’re stupid and would just like dark zombie movie like game with morally grey villain. That just because Its part 2 of a beloved game we’d just eat it up. It feels like ND got cocky and thought they were master storytellers because TLOU was so beloved and raved about.
Idk man I just want Abby dead and we dont even get that :/
TLDR; Bad bland unlikable villains that are supposed to be morally grey and sympathetic, bad story sequence, poorly written death scene. Oh and god awful cringy sex scene. Don't hate it, dont like either.

Rewrite challenge: #10 and #19
#10 The Black Cauldron
Oh poor, poor Black Cauldron. All the “lackluster” Disney films (besides Chicken Little, that one sucks) I feel sad. Katzenberg vivisecting the film didn’t help matters, but the big problem is the world building in my eye.
Prydain feels so underpopulated in the film. I don’t remember any locations with humans in it that weren’t Horned King’s castle or the farm where Taran lives. This is a fantasy world! Where is everybody!? The world building affects our characters too because we don’t know anything about them besides them being a hero or a villain.
The Horned King is in DESPERATE need of a backstory. I’m not too big on Lord of the Rings, but I know that Sauron is connected to the One Ring which is why he’s trying to get it back and we have a pretty good idea what will happen if he gets it back and why everyone else wants it for there own. The motives the Horned King has for finding the Black Cauldron are clear: he wants to bring back an army of the dead…but…why? To rule? To fight? He mentions in the end that his army is moments away from victory. Is he just out to start a zombie apocalypse? What will having an army of the dead accomplish for him? Where’s the profit? Was this somehow explained in the book better? I don’t think so since from what I’ve read the Horned King is a composite character of two villains from the books.
My friend Amelia has the right idea of making Horned King tied to Prydain’s history. My version is a bit though. I’d rewrite the story so that he is the “dead” king whom Taran’s sword once belonged to. He sought out the Black Cauldron but it backfired and he now seeks it to bring back the army that he killed and rule again. After what’s probably been hundreds of years of exposure to black magic, he’s basically rotted from the inside out and his sanity has gone, as he’s now under the delirious impression that Prydain is just waiting to have it’s ruler back when in reality the country has moved on.
That’s another thing too! Is Prydain under-populated because of a war or something, one not specifically tied to the Horned King? That would be interesting. The rest of the world fears The Horned King of course but they don’t consider him much of a threat to their needs. Taran can be one of those people who’s more interested in being a soldier than an apprentice and pig keeper. Maybe the Horned-King-before-he-was-Horned-King started a war or conflict of it’s own centuries past and Taran and co. don’t find out until later.
You had the chance to make the Horned King a real bawss of a villain. Not a sympathetic one, just one with clearer motives and a horrible history. He could be like Sauron/Golem/The White Walkers all together but instead he’s just “the guy who’s gonna use this thing to do this other thing”.
But Horned King is at least interesting. Taran and Eilonwy are boring and it has nothing to do with them being clichéd good-guy hero kids (though I admit, a Black Cauldron starring Fflewddur does sound more unique). I kinda though Taran was gonna be more interesting cause when the film starts he’s all like “yeah I wanna fight the Horned King and be a hero” but the minute Hen-wen is stolen he remembers that he’s just a scared boy. When he finds himself in the Horned King’s castle and has to make Hen-wen use her vision he’s immediately like “I wanna go home nevermind!” I think it’d be more interesting if, once Hen-wen was safe, he was like “fts I’m going home” and wanted to nothing to do with the Horned King or the Black Cauldron but gets roped back in because Gurgi guilt trips him or something. Make him a reluctant hero who looses his wide-eyed wonder of the world but gains real confidence and strength. When he’s about to sacrifice himself to the cauldron it’s not really earned. It feels like he’s doing it because…he’s the hero.
Much as I hate Doug Walker now I remember his Disneycember from way back when mentioning how Eilonwy is a princess but of a kingdom we never see. We should really see that kingdom. There are two ways you could go with this: Make her an actual scullery maid disguised as a princess as a decoy to escort the weird light-thing away from Horned King, since that’s why he captured her in the first place – much like how Taran got roped into all this with Hen-wen; or make her the princess of Prydain and connect her with the going’s on of the outside world that don’t involve the Horned King. Like Taran, she’s also just looking to safely get away, expect once she learns of the Horned King’s whole plan and knows there’s gonna be casualties, she’s all “we gotta stop him!” and springs into action.
In both cases I think she could be a little more feisty – pissed and rage driven to be kidnapped or held prisoner for something that doesn’t even involve her. Make her a no-nonsense girl who has less tolerance for Gurgi and Fflewddur than Taran. Maybe she’s the one whose all like ‘Ima jump in the cauldron’ in the endbut Taran stops her and reminds her that she, like him, is just a kid. Also make her ball of light more connected to the overall story and world of Prydain as well. Something needs to be done with her because, as is, you can cut her out of the movie and nothing would be lost.
Also fix Gurgi’s voice. He’d be a fine character if he weren’t so hard to understand.
…that’s all I got! If it isn’t obvious I haven’t read the Prydain books to know what stuff apparently HAD to stay in despite the filmmakers already taking liberties with the source material. I don’t think I’m the right person to revamp this one as outside of Game of Thrones and Star Wars (it counts) I’m not a fan of high-end Euro-centric fantasy stories. If the movie is being remade than it better be done by someone who knows, likes, and is talented within that genre. Hire the Game of Thrones folks or someone who’s not Peter Jackson cause Peter Jackson’s lost his mind. IDK. Let poor Black Cauldron spread its wings and find it’s home rather than being a victim of cuts from a studio going through growing pains.
#19 The Book of Henry
If you’ve seen Folding Ideas video on it, you’ll know how much of a mary-sue Henry is and how badly this movie handles themes, tone, and morals. It seems like a fanfic written by a future rampage killer who doesn’t understand what about Henry’s actions are “bad”, and how NO ONE in the world has the solution to the problem except him. In a good movie, someone resorting to killing a child-predator as the only option could make a good story - it just has to have a little thing called consequences to it! No story that has implied child rape in it ends with happy goody-goody Butterfly #1 cliffnotes.
While I don’t watch him anymore, I remember Brad Jones made a really good point in his Midnight Screenings of that movie. That being: what if Henry was wrong about Glen, the adopted father. What if this was a misunderstanding and this kid was a psychopath. It would make for a good purposeful tonal whiplash. So here’s my rewrite:
Henry is the eldest, favorite child of a hands-off single mother Susan. Henry prides himself on the lie Susan tells him that he is the real provider of the house. He is mean to Susan (who takes it and says she deserves it) and lonely school cause his attitude isolates him from peers - though he thinks he’s too good for them anyway. Henry begins to grow interested in his teenage neighbor Christina after he hears her screaming in the middle of the night. He comes to believe that her step-father, Glen, is abusing Christina. He stalks the two of them and writes hundreds of notes and tapes about their house and his understanding of their living situation - that Christina’s mother is out of state and Glen is a kind of passive aggressive police chief who doesn’t get along with Christina in public.
Then Henry dies. Not by a tumor. In a freak accident.
Susan goes mad with grief while her remaining son Peter tries to cheer her up. She comes across Henry’s many notes on Glen and Christina. Susan does her own investigation and comes to the same conclusion that Henry did about Christina being abused and, through misguided encouragement from Peter, decides to kill Glen like Henry intended to do. 
Glen meanwhile tries to be a good neighbor by helping the grieving Susan anyway he can. He allows her to watch Christina while he’s at work. Susan, Peter, and Christina bond it up while Susan uses their visits to plan out Glen’s murder. Christina begins to feel more confident and comfortable with herself and even agrees to drive Peter to his school talent show. That same night, Glen is home alone after a long week of work and is unaware that Susan is setting up a sniper riffle from her porch. Before she can shoot, however, Christina comes home and stops Susan in the nick of time. Glen comes out when he hears the scuffle and Susan screams about all the evidence she and Henry have stacked up against Glen and what she was going to do. Distraught, Christina runs inside crying. Glen calls the police on Susan for attempted murder and assault on a minor. As they wait for the cops, Glen tells Susan the real story Henry was not privy to:
Christina was abused - by her biological father, whom her mother is currently battling in a nasty court case. Glen has been left to care for the traumatized Christina. What Henry thought was rape one night was actually Christina having an episode in which she almost killed herself before Glen got home and stopped her. Glen fully admits to not knowing how to take care of children and that Christina wears him out, but chastises Susan for trying to “save” Christina without doing the right thing and contacting child protective services. Susan, looking deeper into Henry’s notes, finds that Henry disliked Glen after he pulled him over one night for walking alone to the grocery store - Henry was channeling his desire to kill Glen through this false-fantasy of saving Christina.
Susan goes to jail. At the court house Christina calls Susan out for only caring about her because of Henry and trivializing her abuse as a means to kill her Step-dad. She even testifies against Susan in court showing her newfound confidence and will to get through life and confesses to Glen that she’s almost grateful to Susan for inexplicably helping her heal. She also pities Susan, who now has to live with the fact that she loved Henry as an ideal son and not for what he actually was - a trait that probably led to Henry’s sociopathic behavior. Christina wishes Peter well as he’s taken into foster care and promises him that things will get better.

Otoh it provides an interesting (read: hilarious) look at their dynamic growing up. Their different dorknesses cancel each other out.

But I wasn't prepared for present-day Barry and Iris to justify and rationalize that shit. I thought they were going to say "That was a bad thing your Mom did. I'm sure she thought she was protecting you but she may have lost sight of how much it hurts to have your choices taken away from you. But I'm not that woman, Nora. I know I could never bear to see you hurting like this. I can still make better choices. Please give me a chance?"
Not "No I am your Mom and everything I do is right and good because I love you, I'm sorry if you feel hurt about it but them's the facts."
They did this when Barry and Joe lied to Iris all through S1, when Joe lied to Iris about her mother. This show is still all about apologia for lying and manipulation because LOVE AND GOOD INTENTIONS AND TO PROTECT YOU BY DISRESPECTING THE FUCK OUT OF YOU AND TAKING AWAY YOUR AGENCY.
Parental love is not a justification. Most abuse takes place at the hands of parents who really believe they're doing it for their children's protection. Please never say "your parents have every right to hurt you to protect you because they love you". Do you even care at all.
I'm not okay. Gonna take a break from fandom for a while. Can't deal with people taking Iris's side to protect their Westallen feels. Fuck both of them.

Vasco (Heromanvasco)
Given our Space!au, I actually find the idea of Vasco and @wild-untamed-heart to be cute. They both are diligent workers who respect each other. They both look out for the other and help each other out when it’s needed. They share little stories with each other and they enjoy talking. Kajika is also a very active person who loves to get out there and try out new things. 
She also was never afraid of Vasco and that’s something that he greatly appreciates. The two of them can go on lil adventures like they are now in thread form. It’s just that thought there they get along really well and if they so wanted to, it could probably turn into something a bit more than that. I just really like the way that he feels comfortable around her. 
How he’s not afraid to be himself and that heals my heart. Like yes Vasco, son, there is a woman out there who won’t scream after seeing your face. QuQ You can be liked too. Given how they’re both active too, it would just be a cute way for the two of them to go climbing around and have adventures.

I’m also weak for the kinds of characters who are more withdrawn or shy. Like they don’t know how to really reach out for people. It’s kinda like--- it strokes the pity inside of me and it makes me love them like, ‘no one loves you? Well make it at least ONE PERSON LOVES YOU, BECAUSE I LOVE YOU.’ 
I actually don’t know too much about him since I don’t hear much about him even though he’s aesthetically my favorite (sorry Izumi and Arashi, but I cannot lie. He’s even got a slight wave to his hair and i’m FREAKING WEAK TO THAT OKAY?) So it may be my bias talking, tbh. I actually don’t know what his studies are like, but from what I’ve been told, he seems like the kind of character who is very loyal. Like once he gets attached, he won’t want to let go? That’s the feel I get from him. 
He seems like he’s a very hard worker (I mean he did so much for Eichi and we saw how that ended up-- I’LL NEVER FORGIVE. TO THE MEGANE BOY) Shugarl does respect people who are hardworking and he will have a better opinion of someone if their intelligent, which i’m guessing Tsumugi might be...? I dunno, I was never told about his intelligence. Anyways, I think as they both have issues with abandonment, they would be able to relate to each other and I think that they would both be a good source of support for the other if it were to be a ship of some kind. I’m weak to support kind of ships, can you tell?

So there is like a couple of AU threads with @knights-queen that I like. These two are pretty compatible, actually. Especially given the fact that the two of them are not shy about the limelight. Ponsol would not mind posing for the camera or just being shown on film in general. He knows a lot about what goes on in society on a social level. 
He does like to look at things that are very aesthetically pleasing. He does like things that are pretty and Arashi would fit that bill. He wouldn’t be bothered much by Arashi’s personality as it stands now so they’d get along okay... if Arashi could handle Ponsol. 
I think they have a compatible dynamic with each other. Ponsol, much like Shugarl does like to spoil people that he cares for and he wouldn’t be shy to let Arashi know what looks good on him. Just shower him with praise if Arashi asks for it. I feel it would make the narcissistic part of Arashi happy. The irony of where Arashi instead is pining for Shugarl ahahaha---- I like both ships so sue me.

Hmm hmmm let’s go with an AU this time around and i’ll talk about @sleepy-and-pretty. We have two different AU’s going on where one is where neither of them have left Japan and they met in college. Mizumachi is still playing American football and Ritsu is a cheerleader. Another one, which is a lot of fun, is a Yakuza!au where Ritsu is the next in line for the Yakuza should anything happen to Rei. 
Having been abandoned at the doorstep as a child, he was taken in to be Ritsu’s personal attendant of sorts. Mizumachi is a very loyal sea urchin, so he’d do anything he can for his master. It was set that Mizumachi acts his usual self when in school so people don’t realize that the two have a connection with each other. It makes it easier for him to lay low and protect his master. 
In general Mizumachi doesn’t find it hard to get along with people. He likes to be helpful and he’s full of energy. He has the energy to spare for Ritsu. From what I’ve been told, though Ritsu can have a bit of a lazy streak, he’s a good kid who is very caring. If someone is being unfair to another person (//coughs Ritsu sticking up for Izumi against Makoto) he will stand up for them and it’s like yes yes that’s a good. Good boy. They’re both odd characters and they’d be able to accept that of the other and that’s why I think they work well as a dynamic. That being said I of course know about the one-sided thing for Komui and the FWB thing with Tsumugi so no worries~ I’m not going to try to extend this past AU things.

I mean, give me a chance to show that Dongmin is a strong fighter and he has a bit of a darker side that he doesn’t often show from underneath his usual laid back behavior? YES PLEASE. I’m all for that. Give it to me. Shion has that kind of personality where Dongmin would just enjoy teasing him just to possibly bait Shion into fighting with him. 
The guy is strong and Dongmin likes a good challenge. That would be the only real reason. He doesn’t go out looking for fights on purpose. Most of the time the fights come to find him and he finds them to be nothing but annoying. Still, if there is someone who could possibly stand their ground against him, he’ll be pretty excited about that and he’d love to try his hand against them. It seems like Shion is the same way so I feel like these two would have a pretty interesting dynamic.

Hm... //quickly tries to think of everyone in the group. I really do need to like-- interact more with people, huh? Though, ya know? Her interactions with @mismatcheddoll are pretty cute? I don’t really think so much of a ship because I know about the whole thing with Shu, but they have a good friendship going on. If it were to ever somehow turn into a ship kinda thing in like an AU or whatever, I think it would be cute. 
The two of them could sew together, bake cookies and just chat over some good tea. They can both have all sorts of fun and Haru would be very supportive. ‘Make sure you eat!’ ‘You got hurt? Just wait, I have a bandaid’ ���Someone said what to you? Tell Haru who they were. How dare they say that to you! Haru will show them a thing or two!’ 
There have been ideas where they both make clothes and they model things for each other to help each other out and it’s like the idea that they make clothes for each other makes me wanna cry a lil bit. I think they’re more suited for friendship than a ship but hey. I’m just pretty picky with Haru I guess... i’m like a protecive dragon with her.

... Only because I would find it super funny, I jokingly think to myself: I think @featan and Tarras would be hilarious. It would be a dynamic where they’re in a relationship based on respect and understanding but we’ll have Tarras who is basically an idiot nugget and he refuses to acknowledge that people are above him (even superiors) and just-- wow what a horrible dynamic but I feel like it would just be funny. 
Tarras though, he’s a serious personality despite how he acts. He is very serious about his job and he prides himself in being able to do it well. He is somewhat sympathetic(?) to citizens----- //casually kicks under the rug the ‘earth flower incident. 
I dunno just something about it amuses me. I don’t really think that Tarras is well suited for things like being fated but hey I like a challenge.

I’m back from seeing TLJ and I’ve written a super long rambling feelings post full of spoilers so here we go!

I’ll say I’m relieved because I wanted to love the Finn and Rose and Poe arcs and I was worried I wouldn’t based on things people were saying but I loooooved them. And those were my favorite parts of the film! 
I’m so happy with how much Poe got fleshed out, and how much he’s grown at the end of the film. He’s so richly layered now as a character and they’re using Oscar as they should. He’s evolved so beautifully into a better and wiser leader, one who was too reckless at first and was later unwilling to risk his friends lives on a suicide run. AND HIS SCENES WITH LEIA I’M CRIES. They were so lovely! I can’t decide which was my favorite, maybe when he’s sadly holding her hand while she was comatose?? Or was it their scene on the transport shuttle idk! You just feel so strongly that he’s her legacy and the bond between them is so strong, and she’s so proud of him at the end. And re the Holdo stuff, people who were saying he was written as sexist?? I didn’t get that at all. His conflict with Holdo isn’t “oh she’s a woman who doesn’t know what she’s doing”. It’s because she was a stranger, and not Leia who he trusts wholly. It’s because she wasn’t explaining her intentions or divulging a plan, and what she was doing looked shady (plus lol she was kinda rude to him from their first meeting?). And I loved how that evolved and he was the one who realized immediately what her heroic, brave plan was going to be to save them. And the Poe/Finn/Rose OT3 is so real and I’m excited for 9 for this to be a quartet now that Rey’s fully in the Resistance with them. I’m actually sorta hopeful he and Rey might be a thing in 9? Like I always had a soft spot for that idea because Daisy and Oscar have great chemistry but never thought they’d go there - I was thinking it would be Finn/Rey (which it might still be but Finn/Rose is perfect and it would kinda break my heart if they dropped it). Rey and Poe’s official introduction at the end was very sweet and whatever happens I look forward to them interacting a lot, which they’re bound to in 9. 
 And Finn’s journey from reluctant hero to proud Rebel Scum and his darling relationship with Rose was beautiful to me!! They have this immediate kind of rapport and work so well as partners!! Even just after a day he’s so fond of and protective of her - the way he got super mad at DJ and demanded he give her back her medallion because he knows her so well already and what it means to her! His panic and worry for her at the end! Tenderly tucking her in and sitting vigil by her!! T__T And Rose god Rose! She’s so passionate in what she believes and brave! She’s probably the first SW character I really relate to honestly? Just her gumption and the way she counts herself out only to surprise herself by what she’s capable of - I find her so inspiring. And her and Finn constantly having each other’s back, and basically their relationship representing everything the Resistance and Rebellion of old stands for! God I was heavily spoiled and knew Finn survives but that moment where he’s doing the suicide run towards the canon, the way he closed his eyes and the music swelled... I was cryyyying. And then Rose saves him and he’s so upset that she’s hurt and doesn’t understand and she kisses him with the explosions in the background?? Godd!!!! !!! I noticed too that he had a parallel journey with Rey which was really powerful to me. They both sorta start off in the same place and then end in the same place, discovering their strengths and committing to being the heroes they were meant to be. I also adoredtheir reunion hug. And it was touching the ways they kept thinking of each other - Finn worrying she would follow the tracker to a trap, Rey trying to check in with him and wanting to make sure he got her message. Just! My dears and their beautiful bond!!
The Rey and Kylo scenes were not as overt as I was expecting too lmao. Like it’s so clear that so much of her impassioned reaction and decision to go and try turning him was rooted in a different place, not romantic feelings. He was guarded and awkward and petulant, when he wasn’t mocking her. He never wavers on his own position, there’s never an indication that he’s been moved by her point of view? More like he lets her think that she’s getting through to him all while having no intention of turning to the light. The only time a conversation got her vulnerable was when she was already in a bad place after facing the mirror cave, and she’s kinda flailing for a connection at this low point. And getting caught up in the idea that turning him would turn the tide of the war... it was more like she was trying to be what Luke was refusing to be. Building up to that she had been citing what Luke did for Vader and I think had this delusion that she can do the same thing. Hell she even says because Luke won’t come, then Kylo was the “last hope” and then the movie spells it out for you that this was the hard lesson for her to learn - he’s not the hope, she is. Yoda even spells it out too - failures are just as important as triumphs for learning and growing. It “didn’t go the way the way she thought” and that was a blow but it’s what made Rey realize who she’s meant to be, and that she is enough by herself. And lol frankly I think that means in 9 she’s destined to kill him. I don’t see this ending any other way.
I mean I’ve accepted it now about Kylo?? I thought they were telling a different story with him and thought he’d have a sympathetic backstory but what we got was... pretty weak (gonna go to my grave knowing Rey Solo would have been the superior backstory and superior narrative but anyways!). LF was saying all along that he’s on a inverse hero’s journey, that he’s “finding his place in villaindom”. And I guess I believe them now. I think if they do another movie about “wahh he’s conflicted” after 2 movies already of the same thing it’s just stale?? It’s actually more important now that he is fully purged of conflict and committed. The throne room ending was a complete inversion of ROTJ’s throne room ending, and he made his choice. Really the only way to go now with this is a build up to a final confrontation with Rey that ends in his death, which I think he’s going to welcome at that point. It’s like, I don’t think they need to redeem him anymore as part of showing “hope” always lives on or whatever. Since they’ve gone with Rey as a random person with no Skywalker lineage, it’s made fundamentally more powerful if they commit to this idea that hope isn’t represented by the Skywalkers anymore. Not when you’ve got other little Force sensitives springing up around the galaxy like the ending with the stable boy showed. And it’s at the point where Kylo’s gotten so many second chances and people placing blind faith in him, that you gotta ask when is enough enough. He’s taken out the big guy and he’s in charge now - he can end the war with a word. But he doesn’t. He’s screaming for his troops to assault the last of the Resistance with “no quarter”, knowing his mother is down there. And lol screaming for them to destroy the Millennium Falcon knowing Rey is in there and declaring to Luke he’s going to kill her and “all of it.” And literally trying to slice Luke in half I mean come on!! And now that he’s the Big Guy and unrepentant (as I mentioned he never even really tries to explain himself to Rey in their conversations, he thinks everything is justified because Luke, for one moment, didn’t give him the benefit of the doubt and gave him a frighten. Like??? And then he goes and murders the other students because that’s a totally rational reaction, and I guess the whole galaxy’s gotta pay for his emotional slights which are largely blown out of proportion. >.>)
Basically being a Skywalker isn’t the key to being important, or the last hope, as shown by Rey. And the little stable boy. Likewise being a Skywalker doesn’t entitle Kylo to endless second chances. I think Rey learned her lesson and there’s nothing more that can be said by him. She was naive in this film and she’s going into 9 centered and wiser, and having severed the “bridge” that Snoke had created between them as part of manipulating her. And I don’t see Kylo’s feelings about her as positive or altruistic - he doesn’t want to change for her, doesn’t even consider it, and doesn’t accept her rejection of him. I don’t even think he wants to know or accept the real “her” but rather the one he thinks can be molded into a mirror of him. 
I enjoyed Rey’s dynamic with Luke overall, and only wish they didn’t make that scene where she attacks him so extra. I know it was born out of her frustrations and she’s been heavily manipulated by then but still hitting him when his back was turned wasn’t a great look lol. I’m proud of where she ends up though and her moment lifting the rocks and everyone coming outside and seeing her gave me chills. I’m just sooo looking forward now to her being In The Resistance. Two movies were about her finding her place and finally she’s here. And it breaks my heart that she won’t have more scenes with Leia. Just the one they had in the MF together was lovely. 
And finally pretty much every Leia scene was the Most. I was close to tears for many of them, like her saving herself with the Force, and saying goodbye to Holdo. But the tears were flowing freely in her moment with Luke. They absolutely nailed that! It was better than anything I could’ve dreamed up myself. It was almost eerie, the finality of it, knowing Carrie is gone. It’s maybe because they filmed it as one o fLuke’s final moments alive. :’’( And Luke’s finale... akdsfk. That was everything to me too. I can’t say I’m ever going to be fully happy with the way LF has treated Han, Leia and Luke’s story... either putting them through so much pain or just bringing them down so low. I’ll always think there were different ways they could’ve handled their post ROTJ life. But there was so much about Luke’s story in this film that touched me and he went out like the icon he is. I’m fairly confident he’ll be seen again in 9 as a Force ghost too.

       okay so let’s write a novel talk about actual trainwreck of a character Jack Sparrow in this movie. so there are spoilers under this so don’t read if YOU DON’T WANNA BE SPOILED because I’ve been waiting months to write this and now I finally can:
      the scene that annoyed me the MOST was when Barbossa and Jack release the Pearl back into her true form, and this was a theme throughout the movie. long story short, they get it out of the bottle and they throw the model-size Black Pearl into the ocean and she sinks briefly before rising up into her full majesty and JACK DIDN’T EVEN LOOK REMOTELY BOTHERED WHEN SHE SANK. and this was my problem -- particularly in the second half of the film -- that when it was required of Jack to show emotion, he didn’t. he was actually fine during the first half and showed some decent emotional range, but something really weird happened around the half-way point and honestly, when the Pearl briefly sunk, Hector looked more bereft than Jack did, which makes absolutely no sense. both of them should have been saddened, but Jack has literally fucking died for that ship twice, so he should have been heartbroken -- particularly when it was established early in the movie that Jack was keeping the Pearl on his person, under his coat, above his heart. idk whether it was the editing or the take they eventually used in post-production, but it was seriously odd. and likewise, Jack gives two reactions to Hector’s death, but imo there’s not nearly enough emotion in them for the audience to believe that these two individuals have known each other for half of their lives. it seemed very half-assed, which is basically this entire movie in summary, but something honestly really bothered me about Jack’s characterisation in the second half in particular and I still can’t quite put my finger on it, but he seemed very disinterested in what was going on. the first half was lazy writing, but I kind of want to say that the second half was lazy writing and lazy acting.
        also, let’s talk about the fact that Jack was so stupid he didn’t even realise that you’d need to put the Pearl back into the water for her to grow in size. Hector seriously showed most of the smarts out of the two of them in this movie. the fact that Jack at one point admits he’s a bed wetter, says ‘spaghetti wolves’ when he’s woken up from a drunken stupor, and asks for 200-odd barrels of rum from Barbossa along with the chance to eat Jack the Monkey tells you the kind of infantile stupid Jack was being in this movie.
      now this is the thing with Jack in DMTNT -- I could ultimately see what they were trying to do, and it kind of worked in the first half, but it was so poorly executed because ultimately they created a contradiction for themselves. the directors and Johnny have stated on multiple occasions that Jack is now apparently a character without arc or development, and yet they put him into a narrative where he is supposed to change in some way between the start and end point. I said this before when I remarked last week that it was ironic he had an ‘arc’ in this movie considering those comments: he’s meant to get somewhere, regain his rep, return to a ( mostly ) sober state -- but they kept stagnating him in the narrative because he is this weird arc-less character at this point. it just didn’t make any fucking sense. if you’re going to put a static character into a narrative ( as Jack apparently is nowadays ), then you don’t put him in it at a relative low point, changed from the last time we saw him as an audience and apt to change/develop along the course of the narrative as he ‘redeems’ himself. you’re just writing yourself into a brick wall. he should have been FINE the moment the Black Pearl was restored, but they kept returning him to this earlier drunken, idiotic state without reason even after that point and it just made the whole thing really sloppy. you want to paint Jack at his lowest point? well by doing so, you’re giving the audience a stake in seeing Jack redeem himself and return to the character we know and love -- and yet there was no obvious sign that had happened, no natural development that saw him slowly but steadily getting his groove back and taking control of his own narrative until the very end, when suddenly he was absolutely fine even though he’d been fighting plot convenient alcoholism for the entire movie. 
      but, let’s be honest~
      he was essentially inconsequential to this plot, save from the beginning when he acts as the catalyst for Salazar’s escape. he wasn’t very active whatsoever, nor was he really ever in control, save for when he takes Henry and Carina hostage, and even then the scene where Jack threatens Carina, Jack doesn’t appear very threatening -- mostly incompetent, and this is a theme. normally, Jack is always in control of his own actions, and he hates it when he’s not -- it’s a hallmark quality of his character because he values his personal freedom above all else. here he kinda gets passed around from character to character -- more as a burden, than anything, and boy was he a burden on this narrative. in the second half in particular, he was just sort of there, making the odd joke every now and again, with Carina as the biggest drive in this narrative. she continually pushed the plot forward, more so than Henry, but another problem this movie suffered from was pacing. at no point did the editing seem to take a breather or focus on the characters -- either the characters were making jokes, or they were making clunky expositional statements that was more of a ‘say what you see’ and ‘repeatedly say what we have to do to resolve the plot’ kind of thing rather than the ‘show not tell’ rule. 
      Henry and Carina could have been developed more, as could have Carina and Barbossa -- I think some of Jack’s strongest scenes were actually with Carina, surprisingly enough, because at least they seemed to have a bit of banter back and forth, and the Jack and Henry stuff was kinda decent. but the characters didn’t feel like characters -- not the ones I know and love anyway. I think Hector was the best character out of the originals ( Geoffrey did great with what he had to work with ), and Salazar was pretty good on the whole, but Javier could have been given more to work with -- and with Jack acting like a five year old whenever the two got close to each other, it didn’t really work.
      stuff that did work though in regards to Jack imo: his entrance was pretty good and true to form across the franchise, and the bank robbery scene was fun and felt like potc ( I especially liked the look Gibbs stole at Jack when they were approaching the bridge. AND THERE WAS ANOTHER MOMENT WHEN GIBBS SAVED JACK’S LIFE THAT I LIKED A LOT ). Jack asking his crew for tribute when he’d lost the money was utterly stupid ( that’s not how pirate ships work and honestly several times across this movie I think Jack deserved to be left behind/abandoned because he was acting like a complete fucking needy idiot ), but I think the most emotion he showed in the movie was in that scene when his crew left him -- it fucking KILLED me tbh because HE LOOKS AT GIBBS LAST AND GIBBS JUST GIVES HIM THIS MOST SYMPATHETIC LOOK AND MY HEART STILL HURTS. most of the stuff on Saint Martin for Jack was pretty decent because he felt like Jack -- the problems came once he got out to sea and every so often he’d just regress into a whiny infant for no reason at all. the sleazy stuff kinda annoyed me -- I could have done without the Carina scene on the boat or his continued insistence on ‘horologist,’ and his description of Elizabeth was Unnecessary. but mainly he was just annoying.
      the problem is, he showed absolutely no smarts in this movie, save for the flashback. he had to constantly be saved by others, lucked his way out of most situations -- and the shark scene was Okay because he showed that he could and was willing to save Henry multiple times, but he just wasn’t very proactive at all in this narrative. he was just there, waiting for stuff to happen to him. he saved Carina once which was good, and there were moments when it looked like he was playing the mentor figure to both Henry and Carina, particularly when he was the one to keep bringing up their crushes on each other, but it didn’t really go anywhere. the script had robbed him of all of his wit and charm, which is what made him likeable in the first three movies.
      as for the flashback scene -- I didn’t hate it, even though I wanted to. I could have done without the whole part where the crew gave Jack famous pieces of his costume because a) that’s dumb and TPOF handles his costume better and b) it contradicts everything Johnny has said about picking up pieces of his costume on his adventures over the years. the CGI was pretty good, and I loved them showing Jack as this intelligent and dangerous pirate who traps Salazar without remorse because he needed to put an end to his reign of terror over the seas. I also could have done without it being the Wicked Wench but eh I’m just over it at this point. the point at which it came in the story was pretty random though -- like I understand it was Salazar’s monologue but it just seemed inserted for the sake of ‘ah yes time to show off our CGI technology.’ they could have used it to better showcase how far Jack had fallen since then tbh.
       oh and one last shoutout - ‘Captain Jack Sparrow is dead. buried in an unmarked grave on Saint Martin’ I LOVE. and the scene when Jack walks into the pub and his wanted poster has been changed so his bounty is only £1 as opposed to £100. the visual gag of that worked really well. as did the whole guillotine sequence. that was one of the strongest scenes in the movie tbh. 'you’re to be executed’ ‘executed?!?!! well I’m never coming back here again’ he was drunk af but the pettiness worked in that scene lmfaoo
       OH AND NOT PUTTING JACK IN A SCENE WITH WILL AND ELIZABETH IS STUPID AF
