Forty Orange Cake, Take Three

Life has been lifing, so it's taken me almost a month to get around to posting both THAT AMAZING PHOTO and updating the recipe with this year's tweaks.

As last year, it was a group effort: this time I made the sponge, syrup, glaze, and whipped cream with assistance from @not-mom, @ensrensage made the candied oranges again, and @emi--rose did the frosting, final assembly, and decorations (which were kept a surprise from me until final presentation, and I was DELIGHTED).

Adjustments this year:

Less orange, ironically. I accidentally only used one orange for zest and filling, but it felt like the right amount, really subtle and with the filling being easier to eat tbqh. You could probably still do the original recipe's two oranges, but consensus among the crew was that one was good.

Totally different buttercream frosting, although unfortunately we do not have a specific recipe, as Emi was doing it by taste and texture. I'm also pretty sure that there was more orange extract than the recipe, which probably makes up for the reduced orange in the sponge and whipped cream.

Some minor wording changes in the glaze. I am still not totally satisfied with the consistency, although it probably does not help that the last two years it's been made in unfamiliar kitchens.

The same links as in the previous post apply; I updated both the original Google Doc and the PDF. Having the printout with my lists was incredibly helpful to our baking team!

So I had the 40 Orange Cake for my birthday again, and it went much better than last time! I will be writing up some process notes, and possibly rewriting the recipe for real this time, but mostly I'm just excited about how well it turned out.
