Hey guys, I’ve finally ticked off most of the symptoms for stress and anxiety over the past couple of years (hurray, small success in a big sad context) and just found a new least favourite: tension in chest area that results in insomnia! Far worse than a loss of appetite or hallucinations or memory loss in my humble opinion. Hope it goes away soon, seeing as I almost have nothing to stress about at the moment, especially compared to that hell of an end to the last year! Just one exam on Wednesday and then a new semester from February on. But I don’t feel stressed about that in my mind, so why does my body disagree??
#I’m doing ok tho don’t worry too much#I’ve been at the doctors and had an echocardiogram done today and that looked fine#so now I just have an appointment with my GP next Tuesday to maybe talk all of it through. he might have some things to check for#but until then I’ll try to convince my tired and anxious brain that everything I a-okay and that I can go to bed safe and sound#own post#tag chaos

Well, it seems the fun just doesn't want to stop around here!
The next actual procedure has been scheduled for Tuesday.
So, now it turns out that they didn't like some of my bloodwork that they drew at that surprise appointment, apparently thanks to the slightly low sodium and potassium levels which have come up every time anybody has tested that within the past couple of years. I am also on a medication which is known to cause low sodium levels (and which they actually prescribed for the GI garbage, and really think I need pretty high doses of).
So, now I've got a last minute appointment for an EKG through a different department on Monday, because slightly fucked-up electrolytes. Which have apparently been like that the whole time they've been working on me. The EKG people apparently tried to work me for today at 11 a.m. when Mr. C was kindly running interface this morning, but yeahno. He knew that wasn't going to work on such short notice, even if I had been awake. So, they worked me in for Monday instead.
Oh yeah, I also already had another appointment to get other blood drawn for endocrinology set up for Monday at the local GP clinic, before any of the rest of these complications came up. (Partly because they wanted to retest the sodium/potassium too! Pretty sure I just had everything endo was wanting sampled the other day.) You need advance scheduling for blood draws, and the appointment they gave me for that was several weeks ahead.
I already wasn't too happy about having that blood draw scheduled for Monday, and then the gastroscopy procedure for Tuesday. But,now there's a direct time collision with the last-minute EKG on Monday. And of course it's now Friday evening, so no rescheduling until Monday morning.
Wouldn't be surprised if they do try and charge me for a missed appointment, though (a) it is an unexpected time collision with a last-minute more urgent appointment, and (b) we had absolutely no way of notifying them over 24 hours in advance. Not nearly as bothered by the relatively small fee, as just on principle. I feel bad about his needing to run interference so much lately, but hopefully Mr. C talking to them Monday (in Swedish mode) will help.
I am trying not to worry too much about endoscopy maybe deciding just not to work on me now, especially since this exact same thing came up before that eye surgery under a full general. They did a pre-op EKG as standard, and they did seem satisfied enough to go ahead and knock me out then.
Same with the white coat blood pressure factor at the clinic. The anesthesia people were apparently not too happy with that this time either, so apparently they want me to get a couple of home readings over the weekend to get back to them on Monday. Mr. C is apparently expecting a call back then. Presumably before the damned EKG. 🥴
So yeah, not exactly what anybody around here needs at the moment. And I still have no freaking clue why endoscopy suddenly decided to complicate things now with the intubation and all, with no indication that things have been going anything other than fine over the past 2+ years up to this point.
I am definitely not less of a nervous wreck at this point, not least because I do know that there's fuck all I can do about any of it. Besides take some blood pressure readings, hopefully while I am not having anxiety problems nearly on par with every fucking time I am anywhere near a medical facility. 😬 Worrying about this whole electrolyte business really isn't going to get me anywhere, when there's nothing I can do about that--very likely short of going off that medication, which would probably take a while to bring them back to normal anyway.
Of course it doesn't help that I also keep waiting for the other shoe to drop, in terms of professionals trying to blame me for any of this mess. Thankfully, nobody here so far has even tried pulling that crap on me over anything so far, but yeah experience. I may know that I have no direct control over my freaking potassium levels (and yeah trying to eat more of both sodium and potassium has not seemed to help), but that unfortunately doesn't mean that medical personnel won't decide that's the easiest explanation.
On a very related note, I am glad that they are actually doing things like ordering basic labwork and trying to be thorough following up on it here. (Which, I would not be having most of the issues that are going on now, if anybody had been taking the same approach over the previous nearly 20 years back in London. Including this damage to my esophagus from the DKA crash, which I am trying to get treated for this round of shit even to come up.) It's nice to actually have medical professionals showing some due diligence. But, it sure can turn annoying and overwhelming sometimes.
I'm trying not to worry too much, but that's been going about as well as you might expect.
Tomorrow I've got an intake appointment set up for endoscopy, because they apparently decided to pass me over to a different team. No communication or anything, I just didn't hear anything about the next regular appointment--and then I got this new patient appointment letter for a week after my usual appointment schedule has been running.
That was confusing as hell, but Mr. C called to see if there had been some kind of mixup. Nope, evidently somebody just decided to send me to another team there after around 2 years with absolutely no communication about it. And I am apparently supposed to do a full new intake, with forms and blood tests and all.
There was also a procedure set for the 19th, or two weeks longer than they have been leaving between procedures lately. Thankfully, I am still eating fine right now, and here's hoping that will hold out for another week. At least they are evidently not planning to immediately stop doing treatments entirely, since they did give me that appointment date already.
But yeah, I have no idea wtf is even happening here until hopefully finding out something tomorrow, and it's making me nervous. I am actually at the point where I pretty much trust the team I've been working with so far here, after horrible and generally traumatic experiences dealing with the NHS before. And this is kind of a life-threatening issue they've been treating.
I do of course worry that they're basically just trying to dump me as a patient, since it hasn't been completely solved after 2+ years of them treating it (largely thanks to the delays and assorted fuckups when the damaged esophagus was still more easily fixable). I am also concerned that whatever new people I end up with won't actually try to keep me able to swallow as non-traumatically as possible, and I'll basically end up back in an NHS-level mess. The team I've been dealing with did actually seem to gaf if I could eat--and tried to keep me out of severe pain while they were reaming my throat out on a schedule informed by it staying open or not!--but yeah who knows.
We'll have to see what they have to say tomorrow. And I'm glad I do have some kind of backup, going in to who the hell knows what.

The Right Chapter 23 || Aaron Hotchner x Fem Reader
hello my loves! Some of you may have already seen this, but I have news! This fic is officially complete. There are thirty chapters, so you still have seven left after today’s update. I’ll be keeping the usual Tuesday/Saturday posting schedule, so you have a month left of updates.
Now that I am done drafting this fic, my requests will be open while I begin to bank up new chapters of the Hotch x Reader Scandal!AU that I plan to write next. Please send in requests here. I would also LOVE if you could fill out this survey about the Scandal!AU so I can get a sense of what you all would like. I will make sure to write it in a way that makes sense, even if you haven’t seen Scandal!
As always, thanks so much for reading, y’all are just the best.
Read previous chapters of this fic here!
contains: canon-typical descriptions of violence, cursing, hospital mention
wordcount: 2.3k
A little while later, Hotch sends JJ and Emily to the school to interview the classmates of the students who had been murdered, and you and Morgan head off to the medical examiner’s office.
“Find anything interesting in the calls from the tip line?” Morgan asks you as he pulls out of the parking lot, and you shrug.
“I need to go back through my notes. There were a couple kids' names that came up, but I want to go back and cross check for the names that came up more than once-- i figure if the name only comes up once, it’s kids pranking each other and I don’t want to waste our time on dead ends. Garcia’s looking into a teacher for me, though.”
“We just need a couple more puzzle pieces, and then it’ll all come together,” Derek says, more to himself than to you, and you murmur out your agreement as he pulls into the examiner’s office.
“Cause of death for Mrs. Mack and Mrs. Sutton was a gunshot wound to the neck. The daughters, to the abdomen,” the doctor says, passing over her report. “The men were all strangled. The boys by hand, the men with a garrote.”
“Any idea what order they were killed in?” You asked.
“My guess is the women first, one right after the other. Then the sons, and the husbands.”
“How did he stop the husbands from taking him down while he killed the sons?” Morgan asks skeptically.
The medical examiner points out a bruise on Mr. Sutton’s skull. “Looks like he was knocked unconscious, maybe by the butt of the gun or something in the home.” She explains.
“Thank you,” you said to the medical examiner, who smiled and left you both to your work.
“Are you thinking what I’m thinking?” Morgan asks you.
“White man in his twenties or thirties, snubbed by a woman he desired for another man, taking out the families he’s convinced he’ll never have?”
“Call Hotch,” he said, taking off at a brisk pace back towards the car and trusting you to follow. You pulled your phone out of your pocket and discovered that Garcia was already calling you.
“Hi Garcia, can you patch Hotch in?” You asked.
“Already here bug, and trust me, you’re gonna want to hear this.” She told you, and you put the phone on speaker so Morgan could listen in while he drove.
“What did you find, Garcia?” Hotch asked.
“So, I looked into Marc Vexper, and it turns out this long-term English sub has something to hide-- he didn’t make a single card purchase on either day that he was out, and his phone was completely off from the moment he stepped off the school’s campus to the time he returned.”
“Morgan and I are just leaving the medical examiner’s office now-- Marc fits the profile to a tee.” You interject.
“Oh but wait, the high school of horrors doesn’t end there,” Garcia warns you. “I took a peek at Marc’s texts looking for clues about his whereabouts, and I noticed some too-friendly chats with Victoria Sullivan, a student in his AP Literature class. Her phone was on both days, and I’ll give you one guess as to where she was both days-- and it wasn’t school.”
“You’re kidding,” Morgan sighs out.
“So did he groom Victoria into doing it herself, or was she an accomplice?” Hotch asked.
“The men were strangled, Aaron. There’s no way she could have done that herself.” You tell him.
“We need an address, Penelope.” Hotch demands.
“Already on your phone. The station’s closest.” She tells you.
“We’ll meet you there.” Hotch says, and the line clicks.
In a routine you’ve performed too many times to count, Morgan flicks on the lights and sirens as you mount your phone with the GPS sending you in the right direction. It’s all the same as it usually is, so why are you so nervous?
**********************
Hotch elects not to put on his lights and sirens as he approaches Mr. Vexper’s house, not wanting to alert him that anyone had found him out. There are two cars in the driveway-- a modest sedan with a few dings in it, and a shitbox of an old jeep with a parking permit for the local high school on the back bumper.
“The girl is here-- she might be a hostage.” Hotch tells Spencer, who nods. “We need to be careful. There’s no need for any other kids to lose their lives,” he says, quietly opening up his car door and gesturing for Spencer to take a back entrance while he takes the front. He climbs the worn wooden steps and peeks into the window, seeing nothing before he takes one hand off of his gun to swing open the front door of the home, where he’s met face to face with the Victoria Sullivan, standing on the main stairway of the home, gun leveled square at the middle of his forehead.
“Victoria, put the gun down,” Hotch says slowly, raising his own hands as a sign of good faith. “I’m here to help you. Where’s Marc?”
Before Victoria can answer, Hotch hears the woosh of metal in the air and feels an overwhelming crack in his legs, falling to the ground as he yelps in pain.
“Run, Vicky! You know where to go!” Marc yells, and the girl disappears from Hotch’s blurring line of vision as March continues to beat on Hotch with a crowbar, stomping on his legs.
Hotch vaguely hears Spencer's running footsteps, and Marc takes off, running in the same direction as Victoria.
Spencer falls to the ground next to Hotch, attempting to gently tend to his injuries, but Hotch weakly waves him off.
“Go, go, save the girl, he’ll kill her next. I’m okay. Go,” he coughs out, and after a moment’s hesitation, Spencer goes.
Hotch groans as he gropes around in his pants pocket, pulling out his cell phone and calling Garcia.
“I need help,” he says once the line clicks.
****************
If Aaron lived through this, you were going to kill him yourself. You knew you were being irrational, you knew it wasn’t his fault, and worst of all you know that he hadn’t even done something you could be mad at him for, like going in without backup. This was just the job. This just happened sometimes. And you were absolutely fucking livid that it was happening to him. Not to mention scared shitless.
Morgan had pumped the gas as soon as Garcia called, but it still wasn’t fast enough. Your leg bounced anxiously in the passenger seat.
“He’s gonna be fine,” Morgan attempted to placate you, but you wouldn’t have it.
“You don’t know that,” you spat out.
“He’s tough. He’s got a lot to stick around for. He’s gonna be okay,” He tells you, and this time you don’t argue.
When you finally pull up to the house, Aaron is on a stretcher being loaded onto an ambulance. You throw yourself out of the SUV before it’s even fully stopped, calling out for Aaron.
“I’m okay,” he sputters out as you climb into the back of the ambulance.
“No you aren’t, you asshole,” you scoffed at him, your voice a little watery. “Tell the paramedics what happened so they can help you,” you said, stroking at the hair at the top of his head as your chin quivered.
“Don’t cry,” he says, reaching up for you and you see that his hands are bloody.
“Shh, shhh. Don’t worry about me. Let them help you,” you calmed him down, trying not to let your tears interrupt the medics when his eyes roll into the back of his head and he loses consciousness.
Aaron will live, and you suppose you won’t follow through on your threats to kill him. Once he’s in the hospital, they wheel him back to a restricted area, leaving you alone in a waiting room while the rest of the team finds the unsub. You call Jess, let her know what’s going on, but ask that she keep it from Jack until you’re back in the room with him and Hotch is able to talk to Jack himself. You didn’t want Jack to worry, and you knew that Aaron’s assurance that he was fine was the only comfort Jack would accept.
After a while-- it could have been thirty minutes or three hours, Emily appears in the waiting room..
“I was appointed to come check on you,” she says by way of greeting. “Have you seen him yet?”
“Not since they took him out of the ambulance. He looked… bad,” you struggle to find a word that explains the magnitude of it.
“He’s gonna be fine. No gunshot wounds, just some nasty bruises. I’m sure it looked worse than it actually was.” She consoles you gently.
“I hope you’re right.”
At that moment, a doctor appears in the doorway. “For Agent Hotchner?” He asks, and you walk over to him.
“I’m Aaron’s partner,” you explain, the word “girlfriend” feeling entirely too childish for the scenario.
“Agent Hotchner is going to be just fine. His left leg is fractured slightly at the femur and the kneecap, but we’ve put him in a brace to stabilize the knee, and he should recover over the next eight to twelve weeks. He’ll need some physical therapy, and field work is out of the question until he is cleared, but he’ll make a full recovery. He has a mild concussion and a few bruised ribs, but we’ve given him some meds for the pain and the concussion shouldn’t present any further complications.”
No field work. Aaron was going to be pissed. “Thank you, doctor.” You said gratefully.
“He’s been asking for you, if you’d like to follow me,” The doctor responds, and you allow him to lead you down a maze of hallways, leaving you just outside Aaron’s room, where his eyes are shut and his chest rises and falls slowly. Figures, you were sure he’d been up all night running through profiles in his head.
You sat on his right side, away from his injured leg, and rested your head against his mattress, near his hip bone. He looked so fragile like this, wrapped up in a thin blanket and a johnny, bandaged from his collar bone to his toes. You wondered, briefly, if he felt this helpless and frustrated the night that he picked you up from your old apartment. The tears well up against your will, but you allow them to fall, for a few moments. You had earned the right to care for him, to worry about him, to fret. You had earned the right to sit vigil at his hospital bed and try to force images of a lifetime lived without him to stop passing through your head.
Aaron stirred, and you sucked in a quick breath, not wanting to wake him. He settled, again, and you rested your head back against the mattress, letting the gentle rhythm of his breath lull you to sleep.
He twitches a little while later, and the sudden movement jolts you awake. His return to the waking world is slower, and you let him come at it at his own pace, not wanting to overwhelm him when he was probably already going to be in pain and disoriented. You hear him mumble out your name and you stand, placing one hand on his cheek and the other in his uninjured palm.
“I’m right here, baby,” you whispered to him.
“Are you okay?” He asks, trying to look you up and down without moving his neck.
“Am I--” you chided gently. “Honey, I’m fine. Are you okay? Does anything hurt?”
“My leg,” he tells you, trying to sit up, but you push back on his shoulders.
“Absolutely not,” you tell him. “You broke your leg. You are staying in this bed until a doctor tells you otherwise.”
“Fuck,” Aaron muttered out. Suddenly, a thought occurs to him. “Is Spencer okay? And the girl, Victoria Sullivan?”
“The team took them both alive. Spencer is fine, just a little breathless from his run.” You tell him.
“When is it gonna heal?” He switches topics back to his injury.
“You mean, when are you going to be allowed into the field again?” You asked skeptically, and he at least has the good grace to look sheepish. “Not for at least six weeks, more than likely closer to ten, plus physical therapy.”
“God damnit,” Aaron sighs.
“It could have been a lot worse, Aaron,” you point out softly, and he looks up at you.
“You’ve been crying.” He says softly.
“No, I haven’t.”
“Don’t lie to a profiler,” He chides you gently.
“Well, I’m the woman who loves you and I’ve earned the right to cry when you’re hurt.” You said defensively, but not unkindly.
“Hey, I’m okay. Really, I swear. Come up here,” he urges you, and you roll your watery eyes.
“I’ll hurt you,” you tell him.
“You’ll hurt me worse if you don’t come cuddle,” he pouts.
“Corny bastard,” you chuckle, tenderly sliding into bed next to him.
Unable to shift and cuddle, Aaron settles for reaching out for your hand, which you allow him to take in his own. He strokes his thumb over the back of your palm tenderly.
“I’m sorry I scared you,” he whispers, and you might start crying again right there.
“Don’t do it again. I was ready to kill you myself,” you warned him.
“Noted.”
“We should call Jack. I didn’t tell him what was going on, I didn’t want to scare him. Jess knows.”
“I just… want to hold your hand for a couple more minutes.”
“Okay, love. A few more minutes.”

whining under the cut
I’ve been trying to get an ADHD diagnosis since fucking October. I had a consult with a specialist a little before Halloween, and after a very pleasant conversation in which she gave me a lot of good resources, she told me that unfortunately, she was only licensed to do testing on minors, so she couldn’t help me any further than “welp, sounds like you’ve probably got it.” She suggested I print out the self-report form she’d had me do and talk to my GP about options. Luckily, I already had my first doctor’s appointment in like ten years scheduled for the next month. So a few weeks later I go to my new GP and at the end of the appointment, just when it looked like she was about to hurry away, I start pulling out my self-report like “oh, also, I’m pretty sure I have ADHD and I was wondering about exploring options maybe????” and the doc, not even looking at the form, just stares at me in a panic like “WELL YOU NEED TO GET TESTED I CAN’T JUST GIVE YOU DRUGS,” and I’m like “y.....yeah I want to? get tested? that’s? what I was asking?” So like ANOTHER month goes by and she emails to tell me she’s put in a referral to an adult ADHD specialist, and I finally get a call from them like “yeah we can get you scheduled for a consult but it’s gonna be in MARCH” (at this point it is like January). But fine, fine, whatever, March it is, fuck it. I finally have the consult a few weeks ago and have another pleasant conversation with a doctor, and at the end of it he tells me “yep, everything you’re saying sounds pretty typical, but the thing is your score on this self-report is way above average, so it sounds like you might be over-reporting. So let me ask you this: how are you able to drive?” subtext: hmmm I still think you might just want drugs. Well, joke’s on you, sir, the answer is “Fucking reluctantly, I hate driving more than anything and I didn’t even get my license till I was 25,” subtext: eat my ass. So doc’s like, “Ooooh okie dokie then, let’s get you scheduled for testing.”
The test was supposed to be today at one. I would have been finishing up just about now. With any luck, I would have been talking to someone about getting some goddamn help. And at fucking ten this morning, the office calls and tells me their tech (”tech” singular, I guess y’all only have the one???) is out sick, so they have to reschedule me for Tuesday. And I know. I know it’s only four days, I know it’s no one’s fault, I know that. But I am still just. so. angry. about this whole thing. It’s been six months. Six months I’ve been trying to get someone to believe me, to help me, and it’s like some otherworldly force is going out of its way to stop that from happening. And I’m just really really really tired.

so I know I haven’t posted here in a while and I’m probably gonna make a post soon kinda reviewing the last year but for now I have an update that really bothers me
so I’m an outpatient at the university hospital where I get treated for my autoimmune hepatitis and it’s been bothering me for a while because it feels so unorganized and you just feel anonymous in this mass of patients, appointments were only possible tuesdays, I could never really reach my doctor because that’s not how it works at the university hospital, you had to rely on them calling you, and it was always said “oh yes I will call you when your lab results come back and something is not normal” and then I would wait for the call and it never came and I never really knew if my lab results were okay or if I was just forgotten? anyway I just didn’t feel properly cared for there recently and then on top of that I haven’t really seen my doctor for my last 3 appointments because she always had emergencies and she sent me home with a prescription and then this week she was sick and then I learned she isn’t coming back at all because she is on parental leave next year??
so yeah I had my appointment with this other doctor this week and he wants to put me on a budenoside medication (I think the american version is entocort) so he makes me this whole new medication plan and I was taken by surprise since I have never heard of that medication before and why did my other doctor who I have been with for years never once mentioned it? this whole situation left me so confused and conflicted that I didn’t even get to ask any questions and he sends me home with the new med plan and the prescription and I’m just like??? here is this new doctor I have never seen, who maybe skimmed by file a few minutes before seeing me and decides to change my medication that has been working (mostly)??
so now I’ve done some research on budenoside and while it sounds good how it works and that it is locally and doesn’t have the same strong side effects like prednisone, some things have me really worried, especially the side effects that do occur and how it will affect my blood levels? I don’t know what to do, I got the budenoside already but I haven’t taken it yet because I feel so confused and lost since I don’t have a doctor anymore? like I can’t go anywhere if I have problems with it or ask someone questions? also I don’t want to take new medication which I don’t know how they will make me feel right before christmas? this whole thing with the university hospital is such a mess. I mean I do have an appointment to have my blood checked next year but not an actual appointment with a doctor, so how can I know that he will actually call me to talk to me about my results? oh man I just don’t know. maybe I will wait until the new year and ask my GP what to do and if he can refer me to a gastroenterologist...
does anyone has experience with budenoside/entocort with autoimmune hepatitis?

Friday 22nd September 2017
I AM ALIVE! And I have made it through freshers (well pretty much made it through, I don’t think the weekend really counts). At the beginning of the week I was absolutely dreading it and I will admit that there were times when I really just wanted to throw in the towel and leave/not move from my room, however I am pleased to say that I have made it through and I am still here. Now, where was I? I think last I posted about was on Monday, so let’s have a think about what happened since then...
Ah yes, Monday was a blank day with one of our fresher’s events in the evening. C and I were not feeling too up for a night out but we thought we would give it a go and head along to it, especially as it was only 2 minutes around the corner. We tried our hardest to get there a little *late* however even that didn’t help as when we did arrive it was absolutely dead. I am not a nightclub fan and it was not my scene in the slightest however I did have a bit of a laugh with C and we both decided to leave after a while as it was getting a bit too, erm, raucous. I don’t usually drink, however I did have one vodka and diet.coke as at the beginning it was incredibly quiet, cringey and just awful. As more people arrived it did get a little better and the music was okay however it took a turn for the worse after another hour and the dance floor became a mosh pit. I have decided that I do not like night clubs. I tried in York and I tried here but I just don’t enjoy it. There were so many sweaty drunk 18 year old boys (and girls) all pushed together in a small space...definitely not my scene. When C and I came back to our flat we sat in the kitchen and chatted for maybe an hour which was really lovely before heading off to bed.
Tuesday rolled around pretty swiftly and although I had already purchased a ticket for an early event, I decided not to go as it was quite a long walk away and I was extremely tired. Instead I headed over to Wills to register around 10:30am before returning to the flat and going back out for a few talks in the bio-med building in the afternoon. Over the next 3 hours I got to meet my personal tutor (who is really lovely), had a talk from the Neuroscience programme director, IT services and Health & Safety in the lab. Tuesday evening was spent very quietly in the flat after quite a late night the night before, this time with Harry Potter and the philosopher’s stone, which can I just say, is the perfect freshers night in my opinion.
Wednesday saw me back at the biomed buildings where we collected our books, clickers and any other information about our course. T and I walked around a bit with a group of people from Neuroscience afterwards just chatting, before we headed back to our accommodation. T had persuaded C and I to book tickets for bowling that evening (it was booked out by our accommodation), which was really fun although I haven’t bowled in a long time. We were all feeling a bit tired however we decided to go out for our second evening as the event on our wristbands was at a bar/pub not a nightclub! It was a little walk away and the rain didn’t help but T, C and I had a nice few hours sitting and chatting and realising how much we have in common. I didn’t drink but I felt really comfortable not doing so and yeah I just had a really nice evening :)
Thursday was yet again another event at my school, however I went to meet Meg (I don’t know if you will all remember meg but she had a tumblr a while ago and we have been close for a number of years now) for coffee as she is just about to start her 3rd year at uni, which was so lovely and nice. The event was mainly a talk about ‘positive impact” which is a mental health/wellbeing thing that the Uni is running all year with different ‘themes’ each month which is kind of cool. The month that my school is running for everyone is the arts and crafts one which is really exciting. After that we had a ‘bonding activity’ followed by a campus tour/walkabout from 2nd and 3rd years to show us where our lectures will be. At 4pm we then had our ‘welcome ceremony’ which was in Wills and was a fancy event with talks from the Vice Chancellor of the University and a few other people. We also got a Bristol University badge to commemorate the start of our studies which was nice. In the evening we headed out to yet another event hosted by our accommodation, this time LASER FUSION. I think the last time I played laser quest was when I was about 12! It was a good laugh, although very tiring. We played two games, the first was a solo game, followed by a team based one. We were there for about an hour and it was quite nice to bond with a few more people and we have already decided to stay in and not go to the big nightclub event (what a surprise), so T came up to our flat for a chat and we watched grand designs followed by 2 episodes of don’t tell the bridge which was hilarious.
Friday, today, was our fresher’s fair and let me tell you, I was not ready for the amount of flyers and free bags that was thrust in our direction. C and I had decided to head over earlier, which later on we were so glad about because as we left it was getting extremely busy and people were queuing for quite a long way back. In all honesty I can’t even remember what I have signed up to now, I think I did a few sport ones (including Quidditch!) just to try out for fun as well as the Neuroscience society and some mental health ones. Oh and we got free GLITTER FACE PAINT! I’m glad we went but by the time we got back this afternoon, I was exhausted. I think it took about an hour to sort through all the bags and free things that I was given. The best purchase of the day has to be a Bristol University hoodie (with a free t shirt!), and tonight we have planned another night in, this time with Harry potter and the Chamber of Secrets!
So that’s a little round up of my fresher’s week so far, not your ‘average’ one but I for one am glad that it is nearly over. It has been a funny/odd week, my emotions have been all over the place and I haven’t really felt myself however I have pushed my anxiety in so many ways and spoken to more people than I can count. Food wise things have been hard, I’m not going to lie but yeah, I won’t elaborate any further. I have a GP appointment booked for next Wednesday (S texted me to see how things were going and also to talk about the STEPS referral so hopefully things will get sorted soon). I am hoping that as things begin to calm down a little, it will get a little more manageable as I will get into a bit more of a routine. This week has just been very hectic/crazy with timings all over the place. I am incredibly nervous/worried about starting my course and not being able to keep up but I am just going to take it one day at a time. I am in quite a lot (16-20 hours each week) but that is probably quite a good thing and I am going to try to make contact with my personal tutor within the next few weeks just to meet with him and have a bit of a chat. Anyway, I hope you are all well, sorry for being a bit absent recently, I will be back posting soon :) x

Interview #2
11/3/19
Tell me about a time where you started feeling symptoms. What did you do? How did you feel in that moment
Looked a bit bewildered when I started to ask the question – mouth open, blinked hard to start thinking about question
“Symptoms for sickness?”
“Previous experiences demotivated me to go to the doctor”
Go back to instincts if it’s something I’ve experienced before. If not, I turn to Google to get an idea of what it might be
Gets concerned if symptoms persist after 1-2 weeks
*fidgets with hand while talking* lead to talking about finger infection
Effect of googling symptoms – sometimes can lead to anxiety, but generally calms my nerves down if what I’m reading isn’t too alarming. An example was getting a finger infection and got scared thinking it would need to get amputated but Google suggested to take antibiotics which relieved my anxiety
I usually mention symptoms to my mum or a friend, I generally go to doctor with my mum since she pays for my check-ups ($40 students, $50 adult)
I’m in between child and adulthood in terms of taking responsibility for my health
I take into account if my friend is concerned after hearing my symptoms as a sign to visit the doctor
*talks with hands a lot*
Tell me about your healthcare provider. Is your doctor/GP available via booking an appointment or is it a walk-in clinic?
Recently switched to a new GP due to dissatisfaction with previous GP e.g. waste of money, wasn’t proactive with symptoms, didn’t talk through what could be happening with body and just gives medicine
Mum got recommendation from a friend to see a Chilean doctor, helps to talk to GP who speaks Spanish
All members of my family go to the same GP now, have been going for the past 5 months with 3 appointments
“Not sure why we need to see the same doctor as we live in different areas but it’s easier for mum to have one point of contact”
Generally satisfied although was worried about the distance from home at first
“$40 for students, $50 for adults is still a lot”
Feel obligated to come with a list of things to get checked out to get most out of time and money - “It’s kinda sad that I have to do that”
Solution would be to move but not considering it at the moment maybe in a few months
Poor service from receptionist
15-20 minutes appointment
Book a few days prior
Get recommendations from friend when “shopping around” for healthcare providers, considered going to (Grey Lynn) centre but talked with mum about going to the same GP’s - mum took action and enrolled to same GP
Regularly, go twice to three times a year to the doctor (laughs), would only go if it’s necessary
Talk me through your usual process of allocating a day and time to see your doctor/GP? How easy or difficult is it to schedule an appointment at a time that suits you? (if it’s a walk-in clinic, how long do you have to wait to see your doctor/GP?)
Appointments done through phone calls, and potentially through “a computer system”
Busy clinic so booking can be difficult
Clinic gives recommendations and you work around them
“Would be nice to have an online platform for you to see when you can go”
Not open on weekends, e.g. calls Wednesday then would end up seeing GP the following Monday or Tuesday
“I could be seeing another GP during the waiting time, if I went to a less busy GP and possibly open during the weekend”
Would wanna be seen sooner rather than later
Is it important for you to get seen by the same GP each time?
Yes as there would be more understanding/connection with GP for recurring check-ups
Doctor would know your history better
Talk me through your most recent visit to the doctor or GP. What were you thinking and how were you feeling from waiting in reception through to going home?
Personal reflection: Had to explain this question further, perhaps I could’ve planned to word this differently. Wanted to have interviewee think about the question for a few seconds as it’s about “feelings”
Most recent visit was about a month ago
Anxious about what would happen next
Actual clinic looks like a home that’s been transformed to a clinic, doesn’t look like a clinic though
Generally packed waiting room
I read magazines while waiting, appointments usually run late so I make sure to allocate a lot of time throughout the day
*rubs face/eyes a lot, talks slowly in a relaxed manner, take into consideration that the interview was done in their home*
Felt relieved when GP was seen and given prescription meaning they could start “trialling” medication and felt like there was “more progression”
GP was quick, informative, gave notes - this was nice
Understands that the 15-20 min duration is to not make other patients who’ve booked wait
This is enough as GP is active in asking questions and finding things out
Compared to previous doctor who just listened instead of steer the conversation = “hard to know what to talk about when you don’t understand what you’re going through”
Goes same time as mum - one after the other so they sit in each other’s appointments, feels that there’s enough time to ask questions in case anything was forgotten before leaving
Can you tell me roughly how long you were seen by the doctor for?
15-20 minutes
Talk me through how you were feeling during the actual check-up.
FEEL during appointment: trusts GP but still anxious about “how” to explain feelings, concerned how to express what they’re going through but GP asks questions like “are you experiencing this” and replies with “yes” “no” etc. - anxiety subsides when they start to feel like the GP understands what they’re saying
GP asks other questions like how long it’s been persisting, etc
Start off anxious but depends on GP and how they act which is a huge factor that would leave them relieved/satisfied
Tell me about how your provider explained potential diagnoses and solutions.
Give brief explanation of what’s going on to GP
“GP analyses it in her mind probably”
GP talks through symptoms e.g. if it is this, have you been feeling ___, reply
Question and answer method until they reach a point of possible/actual diagnosis
GP explains why it’s happening e.g. environmental effects, immune system, chemicals = understand in a “more scientific level”
GP explains actions to take, gives timeframe for when it should get better with medication and if not come back
GP is informative, gives names and writes them down for patient to read through later
Medication/prescription explanation (benefits, side effects)
If concerned with side effects, GP “wholeheartedly” says what they are e.g. for taking antibiotics it’s good to compensate for what’s lost with probiotics (so far, interviewee always gives examples of personal experiences)
Test fees
E.g. blood test - take paper from GP to Labtest which is included in the appointment fee
Current GP informs them of results whether positive or negative unlike previous one who never followed up, turns out they are iron deficient but found this out from another practitioner - mum took action and got results from Labtest then
FEEL: angry that interviewee paid $40 and GP didn’t follow up when they said they will “bad service”
Tell me about a significant clinical experience you can recall (either positive or negative). Why was it significant? How did you feel in that moment? Why did you feel that way? Do most check-ups with your provider turn out like this?
Took longer to think about this situation which is understandable
E.g. with previous GP, interviewee consulted about a cyst which their mum had before at a young age (similar area) and needed to get surgically removed. GP however said to just take antibiotics - cyst didn’t get better, infection went away but it was still there, started to get inflammed, went back to GP and gave them more antibiotics
Wondered why GP wasn’t concerned about it especially with how long it was persisting
IMPROMPTU section of interview
Topic: Recommending surgery to patient
Added interviewee/participant: Shannon in the background
Following up from the cyst situation - moved to new GP in the first appointment that they had a cyst, GP brought up taking antibiotics but also surgery if it doesn’t get better
GP said it would be quick “right then and there”
“Could be that they’re just lazy about it”
Shannon: Are we just talking about GP’s or other specialists? *proceeds to tell her story about a surgery*
Consulted own GP about a freckle on lip and got referred to a dermatologist
Was monitored for 6 months, couldn’t see anything serious about it e.g. cancerous. Advised interviewee to come back if it changes colour or size and it did
After seeing it for the third time, within 10 minutes of the appointment specialist said to “cut it out” next week
Interviewee was shocked as they didn’t sign a consent form to the surgery, wasn’t told how it was going to be done and what to do
Hesitant as it was too sudden, felt like specialist was just trying to fit interviewee in the list before Christmas holidays
Quoted specialist “yo we’re gonna cut this out” was very casual while telling the story
Worried upon hearing that - “what? This is my face”
“Looking back that was really bad” - didn’t explain complications
Expressed feedback as they asked for it “doctors were shitty but the nurses were nice” *Cat laughs*
30-40 minutes surgery where interviewee was conscious and nervous
Assumed it was going to be a small cut, kept asking doctor what they were going to do
Appalled at doctor taking it so casually when explaining where they were going to do the cut
“I think they do hold back on surgeries because they’re expensive and they want to explore other options (first), But if they do surgery they’re gonna try fit it around them.”
E.g. asked doctor if surgery had to be next week and replied with “Well you know, I’ve got a very tight schedule and we don’t want it to get better” “Now or never”
Next time “I would take a support person with me or make sure I question it”
Doctor made it seem like surgery was the obvious way to go - interviewee (may have) felt like they weren’t in control of the situation
“I was just SHOCKED” which prevented them from asking questions
“I don’t care what it looks like I just want to know if I’m healthy”
Question: did they tell you what it could be or what it was caused by? Answer: Not really, said biopsy would have a look and explain what it was
“Doctor didn’t do a good job of stitching me up” as there was a mark left
Cat: I think doctors in NZ are generally lazy
Shannon: Not necessarily lazy but everything is kind of against them a little bit. Doctors are under-resourced, stressed, they’re trying to fit a 30 minute operation “next week” because they can and they need numbers. Like oh we’ll do it now I think they do just think of you as a number. Other family members have experienced this too where doctors are like “well you gotta do it now. There’s a long waiting list. Almost like guilt you into it”
Cat: Well then I guess maybe not lazy but just uncaring *uses hand to try get to a word*
Shannon: Bad bedside manner.
Me: Or not empathic?
Both: Yeah!
Shannon
First thing doctor said after sitting on computer not talking to interviewee before surgery was “Oh you nervous?”
“I’m sitting there trying not to cry” “Yo that’s not what you should say first thing”
Convinced self that “the worst is in your head” but after surgery was convinced that that was the worst and doesn’t want another procedure again without getting knocked out
Has accepted that that happened now, it’s “algood”
Back to script
Can you comment on the quality of care you typically receive in relation to the cost of a check-up? Rate the cost from:
Cat: Private provider hence why it costs more
“I feel like I shouldn’t pay $40, should be $30 max”
In the end, I still think it worth it due to GP being good and they still have to pay other staff, the space, resources etc.
Shannon: “$40 for a student though. That’s expensive”
On uni clinic: busy, under-staffed
Scale of 1-5, 1 being extremely unfair to 5 being extremely fair - Cat gave me a 3.8
Always see the same doctor and having been with them for 5 months, interviewee is certain they prefer it over previous doctor
Shannon: “I pay $15” and there’s a certain amount of free appointments for students. Not privatised.
Group reflection: On different healthcare prices
Free but walk-in so longer wait times
E.g. Central City Clinic is walk-in but costs $50 for a citizen and about $70 for a non-citizen
Fees can depend on location
Cat: “I wish it was easier to find information. I didn’t know that there was a Union (Health Centre). I thought all doctors were like $40. Never heard of an $18 doctor before.”
Shannon: “Also as students we’re all eligible to get a Community Service Card which gives you $5 prescriptions and discounted doctors. Even if you have a job. Normally sent to you during your first year of study […] There’s so much stuff that isn’t made aware.”
Cat: “Yeah! All the stuff I’ve learned are from Shannon or overhearing it. I never see it on a website or a pamphlet. I don’t know why it’s so hard to find really useful information, it’s like they don’t want you to use it.”
Doorknob moment
Poor customer service example: One time a doctor had overdosed her with steroids for a chest infection
Didn’t weigh her and she couldn’t stop trembling so had to go to the doctor
Another example: Doctor/GP had no bedside manner and told interviewee to “lose some weight” at age 14 (felt alone) and was intrusive when asking about family medical history
Receptionist told them that they needed their New Zealand Passport to apply in a condescending manner
Then after seeing it, receptionist changed attitude all of a sudden
Personal reflection:
Overall, I got a lot of insights from that interview and I really benefitted from changing the method. Sitting across Cat while asking her questions without typing away on my laptop to record her answers made it feel like a normal conversation with a friend. Before Shannon stepped into the picture, Cat seemed like she was a bit tired due to her rubbing her eyes a lot and talking slowly. However knowing her she does talk like that naturally anyway. I knew she had plans afterwards so I also didn’t want to drag the interview too long.
Interestingly, having another person contribute to the conversation changed the atmosphere. Once Shannon was able to talk about her own medical experiences, particularly more on the negative side, they both sounded enthusiastic to be talking about our topic which is healthcare. The reason why I chose it was because it seemed to always elicit conversation and it continues to do so.

MIKEY’S PERSONAL BLOG 144, February 2019
Last Sunday, my parents and I went out to visit the Australian Garden, Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne. Considering how hot and humid the weather was today, we only walked around for an hour or so. The main Visitor's Centre overlooks the vast Red Sand Garden with its panoramic views and stunning orange-red colour. Next we walked through several designer gardens onto the River Bend and Melaleuca Spits. https://www.rbg.vic.gov.au/visit-cranbourne/attractions
From the kiosk, we wandered through the Gondwana garden, which was very educational. It described the geological changes which happened from 180 million years ago when all the major continents were joined together. Conifers and ferns continued to thrive and survive even in those extreme conditions of the continents separating, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, the extinction of the dinosaurs and the Ice Age. We finished out visit by walking through the Eucalypt Walk which contained a selection of native plants and gum trees. https://www.rbg.vic.gov.au/visit-cranbourne/attractions/plant-collections/eucalypt-walk
On Monday afternoon, I had an appointment with my occupational therapist Ambika from Everyday Independence. Today my OT was very much in “financial planner” mode as we worked on money management together. It’s probably the toughest aspect of my life right now as it does cause a great deal of stress. The hardest part is being able to have control and discipline over what you’re spending your money on. Saving money is also an area that needs a lot of improvement as it’s always an uphill battle for me.
She talked about the differences between fixed expenses and discretionary expenses. Fixed expenses are things like home loan repayments, phone and utility bills, petrol, car insurance, car repayments, car license and registration, medical appointments, counselling and psychology appointments. Discretionary expenses are the opposite, things like dining, food, drinks, coffees, clothes, CD’s, DVD’s, movies, books, games, homewares, technology items. https://www.thebalance.com/what-s-the-difference-between-fixed-and-variable-expenses-453774
She showed me how to use an electronic budget planner and calculator to work out how much I’m spending and how much I could potentially save. She also made suggestions about using a bank account with high interest that builds up over time and how to cut out unnecessary purchases. It’s looking at money in a holistic, long-term fashion rather than week to week or fortnight to fortnight like most people view money. https://www.moneysmart.gov.au/tools-and-resources/calculators-and-apps/budget-planner
On Monday night, I went to my HIIT + Core small group fitness session at CinFull Fitness. Tonight everyone received their official merch tees, tanks, leggings and hoodies, though there was some sizing issues with some of it. Hopefully it’ll all get resolved quickly. I also met a new girl named Fiona plus Samantha Nio Hellesoe and Ashley Hart. We warmed up by going for a short jog through the nearby reserve and around the block. Honestly I hate running but I was managing okay just at a slow, gentle pace with Cinamon Guerin next to me.
Next we did some circuit exercises: 30 seconds of Battle Ropes, Wall balls / Tricep Dips, TRX squats / TRX bicep curls, Kettle bell Swings / Plank Jumps + Step Jumps. Then 10 slam balls / Overhead Squats, 10 Push-ups / V-Ups. For the core exercises, we did: 10 weighted sit ups, 20 Sumo Kettle Bell Squats, Plank Holds with Arm Extensions, 20 Double Leg Raisers. I feel like I’m gradually improving my fitness, though it’s still a struggle at times especially when the fatigue kicks in. And I’m still the king of sweat!
On Tuesday morning, I dropped into the Wattletree Specialist Consulting Suites in Frankston to hand in my referral to see Dr. Sameer Kaul, who is a sleep physician. I made one of the most embarrassing and ironic Freudian slips when I gave the receptionist my referral, saying SPEECH therapist instead of SLEEP specialist. It was probably just nerves as I’d never been to this clinic before. So now I just have to wait until they call me to make an appointment so that I can begin my sleep study. https://www.wtscs.com.au/
While I was out, I decided to have a drive around the suburban back streets. I stumbled across a nearby reserve called Bunarong Park, which is located at the end of Wattle Tree Lane. It contains mostly dense bushland, tall gums, pine trees and ferns as well as wide sandy dirt trails and a lookout platform with picturesque views of Frankston. It’s not an overly huge park but it’s still a lovely spot to have a morning walk through. https://www.frankston.vic.gov.au/Things_To_Do/Parks_and_Reserves/Frankston/Bunarong_Park
On Tuesday night, I went to my Body Combat class with Cinamon Guerin at YMCA Casey ARC in Narre Warren. I was kind of in two minds about going to Combat tonight as I was feeling pretty restless and sleepy but I hadn’t been in over a month and it’s always a good workout. The first two tracks were relatively easy as I’ve done then many times before and I pick up the movements and combos quite fast.
The most challenging part was when we had to perform backward donkey kicks, dynamic lunges with front kicks and running-man. No surprises then that I was pouring with sweat by the end of the class. I was literally wearing my sweat towel over my head. I’ve always found Combat to be an achievable challenge, far from easy but certainly not impossible either. And I guess that’s why I keep coming back to it. https://www.lesmills.com.au/bodycombat
On Friday morning, I had an appointment to see my GP Dr. David Tai Kie at First Health Medical Centre Casey Central. One of my new years resolutions this year was to change medical centres as well as change my regular GP. As much as I appreciated Dr. Mah Mah Thet in the past, I feel like her help has run its course. She was really helpful in some areas while genuinely terrible in others. https://www.firsthealth.net.au/our-clinics/narre-warren-south-clinic/
Plus the waiting times at NarreGate was getting beyond a joke with the centre being unable to cope with the fast growing population in the City of Casey area. Some days I could be waiting up to and excess of 90 minutes to see my GP. So it was time to up and leave from there. It was only my second time seeing. Dr. David but to my surprise, he remembered me from my first appointment with him.
I opened up to him about my sleeping problems, mainly having difficulties falling and staying asleep, interrupted sleep patterns and daytime sleepiness. Whilst the medication I’ve been taking (i.e. 50mg Quetiapine) has been moderately successful, it’s not full proof and I really don’t want to be relying upon medication to help me fall asleep and sleep longer.
So I decided to get a blood test ordered to see if any other factors have been contributing to my poor sleep and low energy levels. Tests include FBE (Full Blood Examination), E/LFTs (Kidney and Liver Function Test), ESR (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate), CRP (C-Reactive Protein Test), TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone Test), Fasting Glucose, Fasting Lipids, FE Studies (Iron Deficiency Test) and Vitamin D. He also noted my tiredness and insomnia on the pathology request form. Hopefully I’ll get some results by next week. https://www.labtestsonline.org.au/learning/test-index
