Lose everything, except yourself. Not satisfied with the result of a murder investigation in Warsaw’s gay community, an officer in 1980s communist Poland resolves to uncover the truth.
Letterboxd:
It’s Cruising with a conscience. In mid-80s Warsaw, a cop goes undercover to solve murders in the gay community and maybe discovers more about himself in the process. Impressively, this policier manages to flesh out members of the queer community while staying with the cop’s perspective. In particular, the house party scene shows the vitality and joy of queer spaces under a repressive regime. The balancing act continues through the end, which finds a credible note of optimism while not fully resolving the case or whitewashing over how dire the oppression really was. The terrific cast includes two actors from the brilliant Corpus Christi, including the lead here, Tomasz Zietek. He gives a well-modulated, mostly internal performance. The cinematography is chilly; any warmth comes from his interactions with his mother, his fiancé, and Arek, the unwitting informant he grows attached to. Netflix dropped this pretty quietly. It deserves more of a spotlight.
