how did you do the wooma art study? whats ur sketch process? im trying to learn how to do art studies next year and urs was rlly rlly rlly good so i wanna know ur process...

Ok ok tho like I literally haven't been near the front for like a month or so cause our systems been working on other things and me and the trauma parts related to our trauma tend to 'pause' when were not being actively set off or when we don't have mental capacity to deal with our Stuff but I like popped up like an excited little mole rat cause y e s (and this is not a problem or me being mad, very thankful if anything cause this shit is one of my few dopamine topics and i usually only front for negative shit so WIN)

But thank you on the compliment ^^ I'm the Wooma kiddo in the system cause Wooma's art gives me dopamine and comfort and I just really like it so it means a lot that you liked it.

Our system parts that do art actually have very different processes, but the only parts that do proper studies are Riku and I and even in that we have different approaches so they'll probably reblog and add on their process as well BUT AS FOR ME

A lot of art studies (the Wooma one included) starts with a lot of just looking at the art and multiple examples of it to find some tendencies and similarities. You can do this physically by like drawing notes over some of the art that they've done or just mentally take notes as you look through it. A really good thing Riku and I would talk about when they were helping me figure it out when I doubted art as a hobby was that its really important while doing this to make take note on the things you ESPECIALLY like and find really cool about it because those notes should be mentally starred as inspiration for how you might like to modify your own personal art style

But like a good place to start is to google the style you like or look through their media / portfolio and just spend a good time browsing it and interacting with the source art itself and try to pick apart the question of "How do they do this" which we tend to look at line thickness / quality / brush type, proportions, major shapes and how they represent things (eyes, noses, facial expressions and the individual ratios of them), etc.

I usually don't actually draw over / draw notes directly over since I just like to browse and take mental notes and reference as I go but for the point of this ask Ill do a bit of an example pulled from Wooma's Instagram (I got lazy since I don't usually actually physically do much of this type of studying and got bored)

Collect a number of references, I just pulled from instagram thumbnails; then pull out thing that seem unique / stand out to the style to look more closely at

2) Lower the opacity and try to draw over the general base structural shapes and take notes on how things work together and the "steps" done to draw the basic structures

3) Doing the above gives you a general idea on the "rules" that are principle to under lying a style. Cool thing is to then make the layer below invisible so all you have are your notes and you have some general good guide lines to reference for later

Then after you did that you can try to do an emulation / try to do and study a specific one you like so like I did a few but one I think I still remember the specific image I studied from was this one [link]

And from here you just kinda plug the art that you are directly trying to emulate and breakdown free hand to the side / corner to regularly look at and reference how the original artist handled doing one thing and decide how you want to apply that to your own

Follow the notes and "rules" you found below and do it as well

Another note I like to add though is that you should never be afraid to go "I like that but I prefer to do it this way / apply my usual style" cause Wooma tends to use a more pencily thin solid / cleaner line but I just like the brush I used, I like the sketchy messiness and I also like coloring in the way i did which is not Wooma style, but just how I like to do things. The eyes are inspired and studied from wooma particular in size and general shape, but I prefered the more fluid and less clearly parallelogram shape and did that as well + my way of handling hair is not studied off of Wooma but rather inspired by the over exaggerated angular style / expressiveness of Wooma's overall art

They actually tend to do hair a lot more in a - for lack of better words - normal anime style but I was like noooo i like the angularness and "dramatized stylized" proportions and shapes so I was like ok im applying that to the hair even if you dont

Like I really like Wooma's art cause of how expressive it is due to how it breaks a lot of typical proportion rules and uses very sharp and dramatic shapes as a foundation sooo

Oh and regarding sketching, I don't sketch I just immediately draw and start with the foundation shapes and just add it directly over. I might erase a few lines that go over but I dont really have a sketching layer. Sketching would be a thing Riku or rather XIV would probably know how to explain better cause I just don't.

But ANYwAyS we have a movie to watch with fam and all soooooooo Ill have to give up the front but THANK you for the prompt to GO OFF cause it was nice to be back after a month or so to do something so fun and just info dump and sdlafkjlda

1. things left behind and the things that are ahead, chapter 34

Peggy and Steve go away together for the first time after adopting Rose. (I could have put down the whole story as I’m wicked proud of it, but the rules said within the past year, and this one was posted last February.) Since this is specifically about patting yourself on the back, I’ll mention that I tend to like my writing when I can get it quiet and pretty like this - just softly loving in small moments.

2. Prototypes, Pekingese, and Other Things That Might Test Your Patience

In which Steve and Peggy accidentally and unwillingly become owners of a wildly awkward dog. Going in the complete opposite direction of the above choice, I don’t think of myself as a super funny writer, but I really like the subtly hilarious energy here - plus, I’m always a sucker for “domesticity is so normal for us by now that we don’t even really notice.” (I do. I notice.)

3. The Shops on Shield Street

Tea/coffee shop owner Peggy and bookshop owner Steve meet, unite to take down a common enemy, and develop Feelings. This hits my sweet spot of fitting canon elements into a totally AU setup, while also having (gasp) something of a plot!

4. there are days we live as if death were nowhere (in the background)

Buffy and Angel are married with kids but life still throws challenges their way - and not always supernatural ones. This one’s back to that quiet tone (avec additional melancholy), and I liked doing the thing where I sketch in their life/family so it feels complete without actually having a lot of buildup (would it be better for me to learn how not to be lazy? Perhaps. But I’m far more likely to just turn it into an “asset”).

5. An Alliance with an Earl

Bridgerton inspired James/Lily fake courting Regency AU. The pacing is slightly flawed, but I’m kinda obsessed with this one, ngl. Tropey and filled with fools falling in love (particularly James - I absolutely loved writing him as an awkward doofus).

I feel like this was a pretty good year for me in terms of art. Lots of stuff that I really liked this year!

I put up pieces that I either thought were particularly good and/or noteworthy. Personal notes under the cut.

Jan: Not a bad start, all things considered. I don’t think I’ve drawn anything with the same energy as the Bootleg Pac-Man redraws since, but I hope to recapture it someday.

Feb: The SSB x Eizouken drawings were the only things of note I drew for that month. They really weren’t as “clean” as I would have liked, but they were still fun to do~

Mar: Another month with little note. I do think this is the best iteration of Galeem I’ve ever drawn though.

Apr: Nothing in my fanart for this month really jumped out at me, but I really liked this version of Carol that I doodled. I’ve kept trying to redesign him since, and he’s just never been as good as he is here.

May: I just could not pick between these two because I love them both so much. If I could make my art look like this more consistently, then I’d probably open commissions. The line work, the colors, the shading, I’m just so in love with both of those pieces. The GW doodles have a kinda cute and creepy look that I like to dip into now and again while the AC piece just about captures the tooth-rotting cuteness I want to draw the other 95% of the time.

June: And then I dropped like a truck. This was when I tried to abstain from drawing fanart to focus on my original stuff, but nothing great came out of it. Best I could find to put there was a sketch of the “Pack Rat” enemy for the RPG I stopped working on~ Not a great start to being 22.

July: This is another piece that I think really captured the kind of look I’m going for. I feel like I’ve been trying to replicate this specific look ever since, but to little success.

Aug: Another drop-off month. This was when I was really getting into the Mahou Smash Project, but I never finished anything for it because I thought the designs were all kind of lackluster. I do hope I find the confidence to come back to it though. I still really like the concept.

Sept: And thus the NSR-pocolypse began. In terms of actual art quality, this is probably the worst piece I’ve ever called “finished”, but it is the most notable work I made that month and its popularity has affirmed to me that even through the weakness of my art, if the writing is good, then it’ll still resonate. It really reinvigorated my confidence and I’ve been drawing a lot more ever since (even if it is mostly NSR). I always tell myself that I don’t need praise to be happy, but this is proof that it does motivate me at least~

Oct:This is the month where I think I was the most consistent with my style. There were definitely a handful of pieces that I really liked, but I think “Capsule Prison” is one of my favorites!

Nov: Another pretty clean month. Since the pieces were kinda consistent I don’t have much else to comment on, but I picked this piece because it’s one of very few totally original ones that I’ve completed in a while. (”Capsule Prison” was designed by my buddy Lex, so she’s only a semi-original character).

Dec: This is probably the month where I’ve made the most “complete” pieces, and that’s mostly due to the followers celebration. It was this month that I also decided to start actually using references in my work again. I think it’s working out for the better, and this one is a stand-out example for me. I still get kinda lazy about that kinda stuff and slip into my old habits, but I hope this will mark the start of me improving again instead of staying in this comfortable lull.

Overall, it’s kinda hard to tell if I’ve actually “grown” any, especially since I don’t have a comparison for last year, but I feel like I’ve been happier with more of my pieces, so I’m gonna call this an improvement. Maybe next year I’ll draw more characters facing right instead of left XP.

I was sketching and decided to do some random stuff surrounding my AU, Undersurge!

This next information will be directly ripped from my notes taken on my phone, it may be changed as the AU develops-

• Idk if the human would really fight against the monsters in this au as the monsters have no reason to fight them and are busy fighting the Umbri

• Maybe you fight the Umbri but you still have the choice to resolve things peacefully(pacifist)

----------

However that leads to conficts as the villagers don't agree with your method (due to these having killed many of them)

• Umbre (plural- umbri) (based off word "Umbra" defined as "the fully shaded inner region of a shadow cast by an opaque object, especially the area on the earth or moon experiencing the total phase of an eclipse")

• The barrier is held up by the magic of the Umbri who were planted by the humans who created the barrier to further ensure their safety against monsters

• The Umbri do not awaken right away, but soon into the construction of the underground when people are settling into their preferred places(the ruins may be finished, IDK yet I need to go back and read some UT stuff again-). Signs of this still remain as you can see the starts of some structures- not many though.

• Most live in tents, easy to construct and take down if needed after years of doing so

(Below section of debated notes by Gaster ↓)

Notes on the Umbri (as those ancient carvings seem to call them):

-Umbri attacks are unpredictable

-They don't seem to attack large groups often, but may do so on occasion (Maybe provoked? Perhaps there's a trigger?)

-The masks and markings seem to deter them as well

-It is recommended have proper attire and company if you leave your base

• Gaster is killed by an Umbre tho

• Their markings are like- permanent mud masks made from the soil the Umbri rose from mixed with their monster magic-- that was a weird way to explain huh . ,.

• The masks and mud markings (should I give those a name- meh I'm lazy) were both ideas credited to Gaster and have been around for a long while

• Seeing the monster face to face seems to trigger the Umbri more likely to attack, thus why they began wearing masks

• People die = Gaster makes discoveries = a little less people die

• Asgore is their "Leader"

The core is not a factor in this au, I don't know if it'll even exist as I don't really see a point- (or how they'd get to building all that when they're so behind on everything else)

• Umbri turn back into soil when they die

• Asgore never does the whole "declare war against humanity" thing and doesn't try to kill human children that fall- so him and Toriel are still together in this AU~

Gerson is one of the few you hear still call him King

• Chara lived to see the second human to fall, they help Alphys with experiments and provide DT. Asriel never absorbs their soul, he dies right in front of them and they destroy the Umbre that killed him. Chara is DETERMINED to bring Asriel back, they collect his dust (which has mixed bits of the Umbre Chara just killed's remains). In their work with Alphys they decide it couldn't hurt to test the DT on the dust. This is how what I'm just now dubbing "Umbrey" is made. Though, like the first, it took a while to emerge. Chara and Al came back to a broken glass scattered across the floor, what remained of the jar that held the dust. They do not know of Asriel's fate.

• Chara's cause of death is unknown. They were found not far from the base. (Maybe someone did it- I'm not sure yet really-)

• Often when someone dies- either someone was there to confirm the death or they just come upon dust and have to figure out who it was (they hold rollcall in the mornings, just in case- kinda morbid oop)

• Names in case of multiversal shenanigans (only Sans and Paps for now though-)

It's a little rocky of a period mourning the death of their children but they get through it together

• Alphys and Undyne are both busy with their respective work (though Al doesn't really get much done, despite her efforts in research). Though they would like to pursue a relationship if possible, Alphys isn't too sure about it. She doesn't want to get attached and lose someone again.

• Alphys, Sans, and Chara are good friends due to working together in the lab. Though Sans doesn't come around as much due to having a different job(Patrol). The three had friendship necklaces Chara found at the dump(they were out in a group searching for supplies). They were originally gonna give one to Asriel but since it was made for three people they decided to give them to Sans and Alphys instead. Eventually they do make their own matching necklaces with Asriel(cause he wants one too)

• Toriel applys markings to new children (monster and human) when needed.

• Chara is a vengeful ghost with lingering anger from getting killed and intensified feelings on Arsriel's death. They want to kill Umbri cause they're what killed Asy and they don't think positively of humans as they are the reason monsters are trapped underground with these things. Chara still lingers and may be able to recover from their hate towards the world~

* Sans - Splotch / Splot / Splotchy / Spot

• Asgore and Toriel are 100+

* Papyrus - Blemish / Blem / Blemy

• The day I made this note page will be Splotch's birthday since I don't know the exact date I first drew him- July 16

Alphys is 31, Undyne is 30

Sans is 26, Papyrus is 18

When Gaster died Sans was 14 (So Pap would be 6-)

??? Maybe

• Asgore and Toriel take Sans & Pap in after Gaster dies

I might change the timeline or the ages completely--

(So they are basically their adopted children cause I love that concept after seeing Handplates/Mercyplates stuff-)

(That makes the fallen humans, Asriel, Sans, and Pap sorta related by adoption in this au then, huh-)

Alright I don’t have the time or brain capacity to write out an entire fic, but I’ve been thinking about Disney channel movie AUs and I need to write them out somehow.

First of all, Descendants. A Descendants AU is NEEDED.

I know the obvious is to make Bill the prince/king. To make Richie one of the Isle of the Lost kids. But is that what we’re gonna do? No. Here’s what we’re gonna do instead:

Stan is the prince/king, and Richie is his best friend/right hand man. Ben and Mike are also their friends, maybe Ben is the son of that one Dwarf (I can’t remember the character’s name sorryy).

Bill, Eddie, and Bev are the kids from Isle of the Lost. It doesn’t particularly matter who their parents are, but Bill is the Mal character, Bev is Evie, and Eddie is a mix of Carlos and Jay. Not literally bc they have different personalities, but, like, their places in the story. Alright. Hell yeah. Now onto the actual story.

Stan spends a lot of time thinking about what he wants his first proclamation as king to be. He talks to Richie, Ben, and Mike about his idea and, with a little bit of a push, he tells his parents he wants to invite some of the kids from Isle of the Lost to go to their school. (Which btw confused me abt the original movie. Why is Ben king? He’s still in school. His dad isn’t sick. Who decided it was time for a 16 year old to be in charge of an entire kingdom? Also where is the rest of the kingdom? We only see the school. Is the school the entire kingdom? It doesn’t matter but those are my thoughts on the matter.)

Bill gets the invitation and, initially, wants to throw it away. He doesn’t care, he likes his home. It’s what he’s always known. But Georgie practically begs him to go. He’s more wide-eyed and naive than Bill is, so the idea of the great big world outside the island is so magical to Georgie. Bill agrees to go, agreeing to write to Georgie everyday and promising to try and find a way to get him over too.

I don’t think either of Bill’s parents would care much about Fairy God Mother’s wand though, so either Eddie’s mom or Bev’s dad is the one to demand they steal it. Eddie already has a different plot, so we’re going to say it’s Bev’s dad who wants the wand. Sonia is lazy. Alvin is power hungry.

Anyway, when they get there, Stan is there to greet them. Bill and Stan see each other and are kinda like 👀 but then they just ignore that because feelings?? Who wants to think about that?? Stan’s still kind of wary of them, and Bill still thinks they’re all stuck up pricks. So neither of them want to admit the other is cute.

Ben takes them to their rooms, and him and Bev are much more relaxed about realizing their feelings for each other. They don’t act on it right away, but it doesn’t freak them out as much. Bev makes Ben blush with her easy going nature, Ben makes Bev giddy with his natural kindness. They can’t help but fall head over heels for each other.

But it’s Eddie who really lectures them on this. His mom had instilled this fear inside him that these new people were going to hurt him. He desperately believes that a relationship with any of these people, that getting too settled, is going to hurt them. All he wants to do is help his friends get the wand and get out.

That is until he meets Richie. They’re in PE when Mike’s dog manages to get away from his leash and, of course, chases after the one person TERRIFIED of dogs (AKA Eddie). And Eddie, whose mother filled his head with stories about rabies and being torn limb from limb, fucking bolts. Mike and Richie (who was in class with him) both try to find him. Richie manages to find him first, hiding half up a tree as Mr Chips (that’s Mike’s dog’s name, right?) barks like a madman. Richie manages to coax him down with the promise that Mr Chips won’t actually hurt him. He does sniff him, but he quickly decides he’s not a threat and demands pets instead. From then on, Richie and Eddie are inseparable.

Bev and Eddie are both making friends, so they’re starting to care less and less about stealing Fairy God Mother’s wand. But Bill’s only worry is still finding a way to get Georgie off the island. And as far as he knows, getting the wand will achieve that. So he manages to convince Bev and Eddie to still go along with the plan, promising that if the villains do take over again, Ben and Richie won’t be in the line of fire.

Unfortunately, the only way they know to get the wand is to seduce Stan (because the wand will crown him king or something during coronation. I forget why the wand is there. But it is. And if someone’s dating Stan, they get to stand right next to the wand. Idk man.) Bev and Eddie beg Bill to do it, not wanting to risk their new romantic interests, and Bill pretends to throw a fit but he’s actually really glad it’s him. He would definitely be low-key jealous if one of his friends got to date the unfairly pretty prince.

So they sneak Stan a love potion and everything’s going great except UH OH Stan’s actually really sweet?? And cute?? And he cares about what Bill has to say?? He spends hours reading Bill’s stories, doesn’t mind posing whenever Bill wants to sketch him (which is OBVIOUSLY just for show, he doesn’t actually wanna draw Stan hahaha😳), and never makes fun of Bill’s stutter. He never even rolls his eyes or tells him to, “spit it out,” he just waits patiently with a soft smile on his face and a sparkle in his eyes.

So Bill’s starting to feel more and more guilty, but he can’t look back now. He PROMISED Georgie, and his brother’s more important than a cute boy. Even if he is the cutest boy he has ever seen.

The day of the coronation, Bill slips Stan the cure to the love potion. He isn’t truly cruel, he doesn’t want Stan to still be in love with him when the villains take over. Because he is the prince and there’s no way Bill could protect him from their wrath. He can deal with Stan hating him, even if it’ll shatter his heart into a million tiny pieces.

Except Stan doesn’t act any different. At first Bill thinks that maybe it’s just because he doesn’t want to cause a scene in front of the crowd, but when they’re alone Stan kisses him softly and tells him how glad he is they met.

A part of Bill is ecstatic that Stan still likes him. But another part of him can only feel crushing guilt. Now Stan’s going to be heartbroken and there’s nothing Bill can do to stop it.

But he still grabs the wand, he still makes a show of breaking down the barrier. He can see the light in Stan’s eyes crumble, and Bill wants to cry his, admittedly, too big heart out. Bev and Eddie rush to help him, even though they’re facing their own moral dilemmas.

It’s not until the villains have already arrived and have everyone held hostage, that Stan finally breaks and asks WHY. Why did he do it? Why did he betray him? When Bill tells him why, Stan’s just like, “You idiot, I could’ve done that.”

Now Bill feels like a real idiot. And when he looks around, all he can see is the anger and fear he saw on the Isle of the Lost. It’s exactly what he was trying to get Georgie away from, but now he’s made it worse.

So in a split second decision, he gathers Eddie and Bev and asks them to help him fix this. It doesn’t take much convincing, they didn’t want to do it in the first place, and they manage to defeat the villains with the power of idk love and friendship or whatever. Maybe the other Losers help too.

When it’s finally all done and over, Bill can’t think of any reason he wouldn’t be sent back. He hands the wand back to Stan with his head hung low and a question on his lips. Can Georgie take his place here?

Stan sighs heavily and tells Bill, yes, of course Georgie can come, but he needs time to think about what to do with Bill. So Bill’s on house (or dorm, I guess) arrest for the next few days. He hangs out with Eddie and Bev, and occasionally Ben, Richie, and Mike, but he doesn’t see Stan for nearly a week. When he finally does, Stan greets him hesitantly, but reassures him that he’s not going to send him back. Bill needs to do community service or whatever, but because he righted his wrongs, he can stay.

Bill’s fucking ecstatic, he leaps forward and wraps Stan in a hug. Stan goes rigid at first, but it isn’t long before he melts into the embrace because he can’t deny that he had missed Bill as well.

It takes some time, but eventually Stan and Bill get back together (Georgie tries to help Bill woo Stan again) and they all live happily ever after and all that.

Art Reviews Attempts

I’ve kinda dabbled with drawing since I was a baby, but never once have I considered myself to be an artist. Even after spending hours on converting my Inktober19 sketches to digital art, that mindset hasn’t changed.

Drawing to me is something that is fun because I don’t take it too seriously. If it sucks and people hate it, it’s ok because I kinda hate it too. 😂

Throughout the years, there have been times when I got in a certain mood to just focus in and really really draw something, and after I’m done, even I, my most aggressive critic, love how it comes out. However, after finishing a piece that I am proud of (or anytime I feel like I’ve done a good job at something) - it feels like nothing I do next will ever live up to it, so why even try at all? 👀

The Inktober challenge pulled me out of a loop like that. I drew something I really like 4 years ago, and hadn’t tried drawing anything again until pretty much last year when a bunch of my coworkers started doing the Inktober challenge together. The challenge and the low expectations got me out of my head, and I focused on enjoying myself instead of trying to compete or chase perfection.

After Inktober, I was totally sick of drawing and started to resent my drawings for being so unskilled. I had these ideas in my head when I started drawing them, and I hadn’t been able to deliver them on pen and paper. I think that is my main issue with art and writing. What I put out doesn’t live up to the expectations in my head. I’m not skillful enough to deliver the details and vibrancy or emotion. And I’m too lazy to invest the time to truly set the scenes. But let’s return to my main point, pen and paper lacked the color and undo button I desperately needed in delivering the scenes in my head, so I decided I was gonna to take one of my sketches and create as closely as I could the scene I had imagined. It’s been months since and I still have so many more drawings to go, but it’s been so much fun!

Someone critiqued my redraws and said they preferred the originals pen sketches, and I’ll be the first to admit my digital art is... odd. But art is subject and I’m here to have fun.

Tenshi for the ask meme?

How I feel about this character: I wrote an entire post gushing about her old portrayal, what do you think? :P Jokes aside, Tenshi’s easily a top 5 fave (not quite my number 1 like I used to say, but definitely still high). As the post mentioned, she clicks with me on a personal level, and has a ton of character potential imo.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: None. I’m notoriously not a romance fan, but that aside I don’t find Tenshi a character who’s particularly interested in it.

My non-romantic OTP for this character: Oddly enough, her and Reimu. The parallels are really overlooked imo - talented, lazy about said talents, simple-minded and individualistic, human-who-knows-a-bit vs immortal-who-knows-a-lot-except-not-really, religious parallels of Shinto Miko vs Taoist Immortal. Of course, Reimu is at least dedicated to her duty (however reluctantly), and Tenshi’s a showoff hedonist. I tend to prefer more serious/responsible portrayals of Reimu when she forces herself to be, so I’d love to see more of these two working together for a shared goal, like a buddy cop kinda thing. Have Tenshi’s carefree selfishness wears on/off Reimu. There’s Marisa, of course, but I like the “simple-minded worldview” parallel between Tenshi/Reimu and how that might change either of them. I tried doing this in an old shame comic of mine once, but that was way too short for any potential to have been fulfilled.

My unpopular opinion about this character: Again, I detailed a lot in the above linked post too. tl;dr I don’t like new smol-Tenshi, and I don’t particularly care for her new friendship with Shion either (then again, I don’t quite like the Yorigami sisters, I’m sorry guys >

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: Besides building on her original character portrayal instead of her new one. Well there was a 10 year gap between SWR and AoCF, there’s plenty of places she could have been, come on. But I guess if there was someplace with huge potential, definitely introduce her in WaHH earlier. Sure, that would risk having Tenshi reveal the obvious twist too early, but again she had plenty of potential with Kasen (the obvious Heaven/Hell parallel, the fact that Kasen’s pretends to be a hermit and studied Taoist knowledge and Tenshi could call her out, except Tenshi doesn’t get the wisdom behind all that stuff etc.). Heck, if you wanted to introduce her new portrayal, have her try to chase down Kasen around Gensokyo like a comedy sketch to segue into the serious parts of the story. And of course, I wouldn’t mind more Tenshi/Reimu team-up dynamic, I was really stoked to hear Tenshi would be in WaHH’s finale but then Reimu was isolated and, well, yeah...

Art Style evolution

Hello, I don’t know if there’s a similar challenge to this already, but I decided to try making one of those “10 art styles” challenges, but with my own style over the years.

It started as just a thing to get out of boredom, but ended up being much more.

First I’ll talk a bit about the character I chose for this. His name’s Lucas, and he is part of a story I made some years ago. I ditched the story itself, but I still like the characters a lot. Lucas is a cat that was turned into a human because a scientist was lonely and wanted friends. They did become friends.

Ok, now I’ll talk a bit about each panel, and what was going on at the time of each one. By that, I mean I’m going to reflect a bit on my life at the time. If that’s not your thing, that’s ok, but if you’d like to know about it, carry on reading.

1.The first one is from back in 2015. At the time, I always said I didn’t like drawing, even though I had 3 sketchbooks full of drawings. Turns out I was just lazy. At this time I only drew for fun, and would normally draw my toys or my classmates.

2.The second one is... interesting.It’s from 2016. It’s based on this coloring book I had, but looks nothing like it. I started drawing fairies a lot, and no longer said I didn’t like drawing. I even tried selling my drawings on my school fair! No one bought them. My aunt would also make fun of my drawings, so I stopped drawing for a while.

3.The third one is from the end of 2016. I decided to grab my pencil again, and try drawing anime! Except I watched one tutorial on how to draw an eye on youtube, and thought I would be able to draw perfect anime immediately. Most of the drawings from this time have very bad anatomy, but for this I based my drawing on one of the better ones.

4.By the time of the fourth one (2017), lots changed. Drawing and writing became a coping mechanism. I would focus on those imaginary worlds that I created to get away from what was happening in reality. It was a tough time, and I don’t really remember most of it, only the stories. Lucas was created around this time. he looked very different though. Every character I drew around this time was connected to the story in some way. I no longer drew random girls. Everything had a purpose. I still like the art style tbh.

5.By the end of 2017, I was done. I no longer cared about anything other than the stories I wrote. It’s almost as if I lived in that world and not this one. At this time though, the depression I was in kinda started showing through to the stories. They started resembling more and more vent art. Around this time I created a story that would be very important to me. It still is. I called it “bittersweet”, and I think the original really showed how I felt at the time. This was a dark time, and the style reflected that. I rarely used color, instead using graphite or a black ballpoint pen. I don’t like looking back at this time in my life.

6.But hey, things don’t stay bad forever. Remember that story I was writing? It motivated me to keep going. And by 2018, my drawings were more colorful than ever. I started to try shading my drawings, and even had wrinkles to the clothes. It was not good, but at least I was trying. I then made a decision. I was going to try doing art as a career. I convinced my mother that the next year I should go to an art school. I got into art more than ever, and started taking it very seriously, which would prove to not be that good in the future.

7.A few months pass, and it’s going alright. I’m still experimenting with different techniques, especially hatching. Things start to slow down, but everything seems good and then...

8.Everything comes crashing down again. Summer started. That’s never a good thing. I started thinking that my art wasn’t good enough. My stories weren’t good enough. I wasn’t good enough. The people around me didn’t really help with those feelings. So, slowly but surely, I started caring about art. I couldn’t bring myself to finish anything. From this time, I only have a handful of sketches. I didn’t like any of them. I was staring to rethink my decisions.

9. I told myself I had to push trough. I had been accepted into an art school, so I couldn’t just back away now. My art looked kinda cool, actually. But I ended up stopping for the rest of the summer after making only a few drawings.

10. Now, there’s a lot between the previous panel and this one. Lots of relearning things, learning new things, a few story rewrites, etc. But, this is where I am at the moment. When school starts, I’ll be doing the thing I like the most: telling stories. I’m going to be studying film, photography and animation. I’m excited for what the future holds. It was hard to get here, but with the help of great friends (perhaps my first real friends) I got here. And I managed to relearn something I had forgotten: Art is supposed to be fun. You shouldn’t push yourself too hard to make things perfect. Some times things won’t look the way you want them to. But, in the end, this is just one panel in the art journey of your life.

Oof, that was long for a first post. What can I say, I get carried away easily. When I started drawing this I didn’t expect to be reflecting on my life, but here we are lol.

Forte’s Fan Character Flashback Friday - #7

Name:: Valarie Masters Series: Danny Phantom Background: Holey moley guacamole! I missed Fan Character Flashback Friday! I mean... today is a Friday, but I was supposed to post this last week! Dangit! I'm sorry! Things are kinda crazy on my end still and it only dawned on me today that I had forgotten to do something - and it was this.

A thousand apologies for my tardiness, but going on about that still won't get this posted.

I've actually been waiting to post this character because I KNOW I had old art of her SOMEWHERE around and I cannot, for the life of me, find it, and unfortunately, I'm down in Texas right now to help out my aunt and uncle so I can't even continue looking for the physical copies of said old art if it even still exists. I KNOW it exists, because I used to post art for this character on a Danny Phantom fan forum I would RP on and heck, I even found that old forum, managed to log in to see if any of those old links still worked, and NOPE.

Guess I deleted them off the Photobucket I once had them on at some point and where the physical copies are, I'm not sure, because I don't remember seeing them when going through my old drawing binders.

It's really quite frustrating.

Anyway, this is Valarie, who I named forgetting about the actual Valerie Grey character from the series, cause the name fit the general bad fan character naming system of "it starts with the same letter of the character I like and is kinda similar, so I'll go with it". I kept it anyway, cause little me reasoned, "well, this Valarie spells it with two As while the other is with an A and an E, so it's fine."

Just kinda funny that they're both linked to Vlad though, so yay, I guess? Hahah, I dunno.

Anywho, Valarie was set up/designed to be Vlad's daughter, but not even his biological daughter, though not a clone like some of my other fan characters, though with things that happen later in the actual series, it would actually be... possible/viable. Instead, she was a extraordinary creation of the Ghost Zone and was more or less "born" of the supernatural energies that construct that dimension.

I guess you can kind of compare her existence to that of Maria from Silent Hill 2. The Born from a Wish scenario kind of implies that Maria was manifested by the town using James' subconscious memories and feelings regarding his wife. Valarie, in the same vein, was manifested by the Ghost Zone, for whatever reason, to help placate Vlad's need and want for a family of his own.

Mind you, this entire backstory was cobbled together before Kindred Spirits introduced Dani Phantom and her entire storyline... which... is.... kinda the same, really, to Valarie's, and I remember at the time, was kind of mad about it back in the day.

Speaking of Dani Phantom, I remember how a lot of people were mad about Butch Hartman's apparent laziness in her character design and creation, cause it was pretty akin to many "bad fan characters" that you see out there, which, hey, I won't deny; that's what this whole Flashback thing I do is about, but you know, this just serves as a good example of the fact that pretty much... everyone does this. Everyone makes bad fan characters, even for their own things, so I think it's just more healthy for people to realize this and embrace it, hahaha.

Going back to Valarie - she's more or less a person who exists to help Vlad chill the fuck out and maybe not ruin things for everyone or everything. A more recent reason I came up with for this was that Clockwork and/or The Observants that are seen in the Ultimate Enemy special with Dark Danny foresaw Vlad's ambitions proving to be too troublesome in the future, so to prevent this from causing way more havoc than it's worth, even with Danny around to stop him or whatever, they're like "hey just throw him a kid; that'll keep him busy a little, right?"

Even with her supernatural origins, Valarie is half-human and half-ghost like Vlad and looks much like him thanks to just her being a physical manifestation of one of his subconscious desires. Physically, she’s about seven or eight years old and generally acts playful, though polite, but can occasionally come off as spoiled.

She shares many of her father’s sentiments towards various issues and people, though it’s safe to assume she doesn’t fully understand his reasoning for those feelings due to how young she is. For example, she harbors a dislike for Jack, though finds his clumsiness more amusing than idiotic and only really says she hates him because Vlad does.

In regards to Danny, she likes him and finds him fun to play with, but in her terms, that means toying around with him. Despite her small size, she can hold her own in battle and has a good handle on her ghost powers and won’t hesitate to use them to pull pranks or harass other people, especially if she has or is told to. Her antics can be described as impish while in ghost form, though she likes to feign innocence if caught.

A big point of curiosity with her is her memory; she has no memory of a time before not “being” and has no real answer when asked about her childhood. She doesn’t seem bothered by this lack of knowledge and usually shrugs it off, intent that she exists because she does; she feels no need to question it further. For her things are simple: if her father is happy, she’s happy. Be this just some childish thought process or some more ingrained sense of purpose because of her strange origins is up for debate.

More was actually done with this character than others and like I said, there used to be old sketches of her about. If I ever find them (and I hope I do, really), I’ll be sure to post them.

But aside from that, like I said, I did role play with this character on a Danny Phantom fan thread and boy was that a cringy time. I will admit now, that back then, when I was like 12 or whatever, I was an obnoxious brat who didn’t know how to really socialize or what she was doing on the Internet. Hahaha, when going back there to find the old image links, I ventured onto some of my older posts and…. Whooooo boy, no thank you.

I know at that point I did also write short fanfics from time to time, but I think those might be locked on boot drives from our old computers and don’t have a way of looking for them now either. For those, if I ever do find them, I might also post them, but it all depends on just HOW much cringe I want to trudge up and share, hahaha.

I know I’ve been ranting a lot now and it’s already now past Friday, even for the time zone I’m in, but I’m gonna go on a little side story as… an apology, though it just means a bit more ranting.

When I said I RPed on this site, I can’t actually say a lot of actual character development happened. I don’t remember what the system was for RPing canon show characters and the times they did pop up, it was on a situational basis, because more people were interested in playing their own character and pretty much everyone on that forum had half-ghost, half-human characters that had their powers for one reason or another.

There was one thread that was particularly popular though that I spent a lot of time in with most of the other players, called Halfa High, so it was just kids in high school. Characters, like mine, that were younger than high school age, had various reasons for being there, like they’re super geniuses or they have a sibling there they’ve come to see or something like that; it’s a fandom RP so anything can happen. Most of the stuff in here, because it was 12-14 or whatever year olds, was just characters pairing up with each other, cause I guess that’s just what kids care about, hahaha. I don’t know, I’m just an old lady now.

Anyway, this thread went on for a good number of pages and eventually they started a second one. And then they had one where everyone went to summer camp, so other weird adventures could be had without the confines of going to school.

This was the one I remember doing the most in though frankly, I don’t remember what the overarching storyline was at the time, though I don’t think I knew what was really going on back in the day either.

One of the big points I do remember was the fact that many of the people on this forum looked up to one particular member, who I’ll call Susan, because that was her character’s name. I’m pretty sure she was in her early 20s at this time, so a lot of the younger people gravitated towards her because she was mature and knew how to keep things moving in terms of RP story; she was more or less the main storyteller of the Halfa threads, coming up with a lot of the plot points and twists. She was also just popular cause she had been there for a while, I think, and she was a pretty good artist on the forum.

She wasn’t necessarily a bad person and usually always open to adapting an RP to involve suggested ideas, but I remember at the time, I was super jealous of her. One, because she did have really good art and I felt like a poo-poo artist and two, because she seemed to have a lot of sway in terms of what she wanted to happen in most scenarios, so much so, it was treated as forum canon that her character was married to Dark Danny and had two kids with him.

Nowadays, of course, I don’t give a damn. Whatever. But back then, it was annoying to me. And I guess some part of me wanted to pair my characters with Older Dan. I remember actually being openly mad about it on the forums and to her in private messages about it and did get in trouble for being a salty, little brat for it. One time, I even wrote a bitter fanfic that was less than subtle in regards to it, but I remember cooling my jets enough for them to not just full out ban me.

Like I said, I was obnoxious back then; it’s a phase all kids go through I guess, cause I see it in kids that age even now.

Anyway, this actually developed into a story point in the RP when I agreed to not be such an Angsty Annie about the whole thing and the Halfa Summer Camp thread took some weird turns. Besides the usual pairing of everyone’s characters with one another and other summer camp-y hijinks, it had time travel, an evil group that were named after the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, and political unrest regarding a ghostly royal family.

The royal family, of course, consisted of Susan and Dan, and their two kids. They had a son and a little girl, who I don’t remember the names of in the slightest. Susan got crowned? Queen of the Ghost Zone after she and some members of some Ghost Council? Were able to seal away Pariah Dark… and in that timeline, Dan was a fugitive, so they got married in secret and still managed to have secret relations enough to have their two kids.

But see, that was in the future of the Ghost Zone, which was like 20-30 years away from the time of the events of the actual RP. Why they were going back in time, I don’t remember, but I think it was something to do with Clockwork sending them back or something, who knows.

Valarie, however, is also technically part of the Ghost Royal Family (cause that’s a thing here…. hahaha), because I guess Susan was… Vlad’s niece? Somehow? So that made her and Valarie cousins, but because Susan was the one who sealed the Big Bad away, that meant she got to be Queen, just… because? There will be a lot of uncertainty with this recollection, cause again, heck if I actually knew or know what happened then.

Anyway, I guess in the uhm… present timeline, Susan was going to summer camp and this was before her and Danny were even a thing, cause doesn’t happen until they’re adults? I think, but she runs into a version of Dan that’s… in between him being a teenage and the future version that’s married to Susan… and… there was some contention with that, but again, I don’t remember what…

But eventually, everyone’s future selves end up appearing at summer camp, again for their own various reasons, along with Susan’s future kids, who get caught up in things, mainly because of misunderstanding and people having grudges and just wanting to kill other people without talking it out.

This loops back to my annoyance with Susan getting her character paired with a major canon character and the aforementioned political unrest, because it led to Older Valarie being a quiet, hardened soldier with a hidden, strong, but deeply unrequited love for Dan, which of course, causes a bit of tension with her and Susan, who is the Queen in the future. Also, apparently, I guess? There was a Ghost War or something? In the future or at some point that they set up a Royal Guard and Army, cause Valarie was more or less the Captain of all that, along with the personal trainer of the eldest son of the Royal Family. Future Susan, of course, is fine with her being in such a position of power cause I guess she’s proved it by this point and she doesn’t know of Valarie’s feelings for her husband, so it’s all right as rain as long as she just… stews about it silently to herself, because that is totally the healthy thing to do.

Older Valarie also goes back in time though, because eventually, people start coming across the aforementioned Four Horsemen, which aren’t really horsemen, because they don’t even have horses, but again, are named after them and are supposed to be the “living embodiments” of their namesake. So we have super powerful characters named War, Pestilence, Famine, and Death running around for… reasons? That I can’t even remember. Certain members’ characters are actually the younger versions of the Four before they’re… corrupted? Or something like that and given those names and most the people who turn into whichever, of course, have to fight their evil, older selves cause that’s cool or whatever.

Younger Valarie, at the time, was just hanging about and I guess fawning over a teenage Danny or the in between Dan (this is just as confusing to remember as it is to read, trust me), and I think makes friends with the Future Prince and Princess, who again are running around. I think the Prince was there to try and find Dan, because he believes he? Killed his father? Even though Dan is his father? And Dan was there anyway to protect the younger version of his future wife…? And the Princess was there just cause she wanted her mom, which is Future Susan, who went back to… do…. Something…?

But anyway, Younger Valarie ends up getting approached by her future self, who had originally come to serve her duty as Captain of the Royal Guard and protect Future Queen Susan, but eventually starts to realize that she could perhaps mess with the past to change things to the way she really wants them (even though I know now that would probably create some annoying paradox but please don’t get me on time paradoxes cause we’ve been here long enough already), so she starts to put it in her younger self’s head that everything going on here isn’t fair and she should do more than just be obedient and trusting and take whatever Susan says without question, because by not being more open and honest about your feelings just leads to a life of misery, pain and loneliness.

However, Younger Valarie just doesn’t get why she would say these things and rejects that line of thinking, which kinda makes Older Valarie snap and be like “okay, fine, I guess I’ll just go kill some peeps and then you’ll see what I mean”... I mean, I think? She does try to stop influencing her younger self and try to take matters into her own hands though.

Because at one point, we did have it where Older Valarie confronts Older Susan about her deep, dark hidden feelings, and they get into a fight over it, especially after Older Valarie threatens to go kill the Prince, but being a trained soldier and the Captain of the Royal Guard, Older Valarie does kick Older Queen Susan’s butt, but I think… is interrupted by one of the Four, that being War.

I think Older Dan also comes in at some point and chides Older Valarie for her actions, but heck if I remember. To be honest, if I fully cared and wanted to really relive some cringe, I could probably go to the forum and just read over the whole thread, but that was like 200+ (if not more) of pages and I…. do not feel like doing that, hahaha.

Anyway, Older Valarie and War end up getting into a fight, because it turns out War himself has some issue with Older Valarie. And it turns out that he used to be like her second in command? Or something? Who disappeared while on a mission and ended up into some spoopy, dark, dangerous, evil place, where he got corrupted and turned into War and it turns out he was okay with it, because he was also angry and bitter, cause surprise! He himself had feelings for Older Valarie, but poor guy got friendzoned and his attempts went unnoticed because she instead had feelings for Older Dan, because love triangles are also a cool plot twist to do, cause why not, I guess.

Uhm… I think during this fight was when Older Valarie started to notice the error? Of her ways? Or something like that after seeing one of her closest subordinates fall into darkness, so her story shifts to trying to get War to remember who he used to be. This character did have an original name, but I totally forget what it was… Anyway, War claims that there’s nothing she can do because he embraced and was more than willing to give up his soul or whatever for the power to actually make Older Valarie notice him or something.

I… actually don’t remember much past this point, though. I want to say she did end up getting through to him, but that might just be me rewriting history. That character, though, was more or less being set up to give someone for Young Valarie to pair with and I do thing there was a present day or at least an uncorrupted version of that character pop up at one point….

But besides that, I don’t even remember if that RP was finished, mainly because I think I started to stop going there as much and lost interest. The RP itself, actually, I think started to slow down, mainly because people got busy with other things, especially Susan and because she was again, more or less the driving force behind most things, it petered out.

I’m actually uncertain how old I was when there, because I will admit, when I was in my first year of college, I toyed around with some of the concepts from this RP and wanted to repurpose it into a story. It was mainly the stuff that took place in the future with the Royal Family and with the Four Horsemen, where basically, it would follow Older Valarie (hell, the “rewrites” character name might have just been Valarie for simplicity sake) as she dealt with her feelings with the Royal family and her relation to it, trying to protect the Kingdom and its people, and eventually deal with the disappearance of her Second in Command and his reappearance as a giant threat later on.

…. Really, I still kinda like the idea…

ANYWAY, I have talked long enough and am tardy enough with just this post as it is, so I’ll leave it at that. According to the Google Doc where I’m writing all this before actually posting, this is six pages long, so even more apologies for my rambling.

Figures in Good Style

It's about time I got this one finished and uploaded! This piece was inspired by this adorable vintage Valentine: Vintage Valentines - Worth Your While graciously posted by Yesterdays-Paper Believe it or not, I actually started on the sketch back in January not long after the original Valentine was posted. (From pretty much the moment I saw it I wanted to draw something inspired by it so I've had it open in another tab so I wouldn't forget this entire time! ) I got about halfway through and started to run into...not really problems so much as frustration. Some of the details were just not working out the way I wanted, the proportions looked wonky, etc. So I gave up and worked on some other things for a little while; some things that were on my to-do list, others that came up as I went along, stuff like that. The longer I went, the more it was looking like the sketch was going to be abandoned, especially as it drew closer to Valentine's Day (because originally I wanted to post it before then for hopefully obvious reasons). But all the while there was this voice in the back of my mind more or less egging me on to go back to it. One night when I was feeling artsy but had finished my other projects, I decided to go back to it. This was one of those times where there must've been something artful in the air because even though it was still trying my patience a little, I didn't get discouraged like I did before and powered through to finish the sketch. (Well, what I was calling finished, anyway.) And somewhere in the mix, I had decided to see it through to completion, after Valentine's Day or not. Compared to the original, I did alter some details and age the two characters up a bit to better suit my own style. The eyes, in particular, I couldn't make out the color on the original that well, so I gave the girl blue eyes to tie in with the boy's shirt and he got green eyes to go with her dress. I think it connects them a bit more since otherwise, their looks don't really go together. I sat on the sketch for a day or two to figure out what I wanted to do exactly beyond just coloring it. I ended up doing the line art on this Parchment Paper by Strathmore that I got on clearance sometime last year, And I really should use that stuff more often. It's got five tinted colors to pick from (I went with the darker of two creamy/tannish options here) and the pages have a sort of subtle marbled look to them. It's also pretty smooth, so markers work pretty nicely on it, but not so smooth that colored pencils won't stick. It's only the 200 series, 60 lb. so it's kinda thin, but I haven't had any issues with that. (Beyond the very obvious I am never taking water to this paper because I am very sure it wouldn't hold up to it very well). I thought the creamy and marbled look would fit with the vintage theme, and the tints of the paper are light enough that they don't affect the color too much. Because I was feeling a little lazy I went with doing a base layer in alcohol markers--good, even coverage pretty quickly without having to build up layers--do a little minor shading, and then deepen up the shadows with pencils. This worked quite well, and again this is something I should do more often. I like colored pencils, but they do tend to take a little longer. I also like markers, but sometimes it's intimidating to me to try and get enough depth/shading/etc. with them alone. (Only thing is I can't use the markers on my tan and gray papers, which is a shame) Originally I wasn't going to include the little pattern on the girl's skirt, but once I started working with the pencils I said, "eh, I can do a little quick sketch-in with a darker green" and then later I accented it with a Pentel Sparkle Pop, so IRL when you move the picture it sparkles. This led me to add the ribbon on the boy's hat so he would have some glitter too. (I did do a couple of gold buttons on him, but it didn't feel like enough). The gold on the fan also sparkles; leaving it plain white in that spot didn't feel right. Then obviously I took my white gelly roll to them, And IRL the shine on their eyes somehow now looks almost like it's glowing because it is so nice and bright . Now, I had figured out while I was doing all this that I didn't want to just leave it on the paper and that be that. Once I was done with the coloring and everything, I let the drawing sit for another day or two and thought about what else I could/wanted to do with it. From my Elizabeth Tower piece, I have this stack/block of paper printed with maps/test/ledgers/etc. On a whim, I started flipping through it, possibly to cut and mount the drawing on a piece. I went through a few different ideas, but I ultimately came back to this piece left over from the Tower; I'd cut a butterfly out of one corner. I hated to waste a whole new piece to cover up most of it, so I was thinking about how I could use this piece that had already been marred. I still had the butterflies I used; So I pulled one out and cut one out of the other corner To fill it out, I pulled out on the ledger pages and mounted it on that, then cut out the drawing and mounted it on that. Though I hadn't planned on it, I ended up mounting my little paper sandwich on a piece of my metallic cardstock just to give it some more stability. (The cardstock I got pretty cheap and don't use it that much, so I don't mind using it for stuff like that.) Some details and proportions still came out a little bit funny, but ultimately I'm happy with it. It's cute, and the different papers make it feel a bit fancier. This was also the piece that put a nicer paper cutter than the one my mom got from the dollar store many years ago on my art shopping list because that one was still cutting crooked and giving me trouble. (I have since purchased a pretty nice one by Fiskars that works wonderfully from Wal-Mart). I went with "Figures in Good Style" for the title as it comes from the text on the original and seemed like a good fit. And I can’t really get what it’s about from just the art but it looks rad and I’m always down for original works (I feel you on drawing shit for your own stuff instead of actually progressing the story) so have at it! ok so the world?? ive mentioned it several times but the worlds called uxordra!!! if u go back and find stuff u MAY find that like. i have called it uxodra or uxorda and honestly?? im not sure which one was right so i mashed the two together called it uxordra and called it a day

its ruled by kingdoms bc its. kinda like every other fantasy world like that. note that i started working on osas when i was like. in 6th grade so u have to rly bare with me here bc all the ocs have those 6th grade oc Tragic Backstories or are ocs from a fandom that ive reworked to put them in here. and also if u look closely u would be able to pick out the inspo for some parts of osas.

ALGJAD but yeah its separated into kingdoms!! surprisingly, there isnt a lot of conflict between the kingdoms in the story. surprisingly bc like. thats the plot for several fantasy stories huh. but thats mainly bc 6th grade me didnt even think abt making a fuckin map of uxordra. like ok i get it. but why. 6th grade me i couldve evolved the story so much if only i had a map but instead i didnt and now the story that i came up w rly only mentions only a few different kingdoms and im too invested w it so im too lazy to change it and figure out how to change it. and also they have like. no names

and for that im serious i mean. the kingdom that osas is mainly set in? thats like. the only one named so far. its called valkarie and yes its like valkyrie but just iwth an a instead of a y. see its bc one day 7th grade me realized that i needed a name and came up with one on the spot. but ive been thinking of it and refering to it as valkarie so much that now thats what its called. its a big oof. its arguably one of the biggest kingdoms next to this other one that i dont have a name for??

five out of the main group was born in valkarie!! while iovita ( hes the one w curly hair thats mainly sketched in green) was born in that other big kingdom!! that other kingdom (which is REALLY need a name for considering its the origin place of one of the MAIN CHARACTERS) is like. ok so valkarie is rly just. powerful as a kingdom. but that other kingdom?? theyre just funky! theyre a big trading hub and outsource of crops and everyone thinks theyre cool.

valkarie is. kinda mess. as ive mentioned before yeah no one rly likes them but?? theyre powerful?? they have a big military and iovita comes over here and immediately hisses thru his teeth bc man this is. hm. this seems Excessive. but in their semi defense there was already a good amount of guards and knights and shit but then this whole entire thing happened in ruresi and now all them from there moved to the capitol and its just agakdagjajd Too Many Guards! but yeah like. they also are kinda hggjghjdjg-ing bc there was this whole entire thing called the idarist war which will eventually be elaborated in osas once i actually WORK ON IT!!!!!!!!!! and like it rly just depleted a lot of resources and threw people out of wack

oh my god and i like. just realized i forgot to put this here. but like. theres also gods!!! whenever theres a character in the osas tag that doesnt look human?? tahts a god!!! they just kinda exist and give people things and sometimes start droughts like a fuckin idiot!!!!!!!!! aglajdajg ill probably explain them more in osas. again if i actually WORK ON IT!!!!!!

but yeah. the kingdoms are rather peaceful when it comes to each other. the real conflict most of the time is within the kingdoms themselves?? and at the start of osas its not even that full of conflict. the real peak of hardship was like 80 years ago during the idarist war but most (i say most bc. ruresi.) of valkarie has recovered or at least. recovered as much as they could.

and uhhh what the characters like to eat??

bodil (the ginger one with the teal-ish coat!!) likes salty things!! admittedly its bc her diet kinda. Sucks??? she lives off of preserved things and things merope serves (which is all bar food so. lots of salt.) she also likes milk. she is a simple lesbian she sees milk she drinks

merope (the one w an eyepatch and vitiligo and also sharp chompers………..) really likes stew!!! his aunt used to make it a lot when he was younger and its been his favorite food since!! he makes so many salty things that at this point hes kinda exhausted

aludra (the one with those red marks and blank eyes?? shes mostly drawn in red) cant eat anymore. shes a ghost. BUT anyways she also likes stew. but she also loves dry food that is rly easy to snack on (like crackers or smn!!) bc she kinda used to like just sit in her room and Brood.

iovita (yeah ive mentioned him already. hes the one in green) likes pies!! he likes fruits and as such was like “holy shit you can bake SO MANY fruits into pies. he really likes everything really?? bc yeah his kingdom is known for their abundance of farmland which means lots of fruits and meat and vegetables and its just. wild. but he really doesnt like sour things. conan eats a lemon in front of him and iovita realizes that Their Gods Will Not Save Them.

alfjadka yeah conan (has the light hair w dark roots, that emo bang, and drawn in grey) likes sour things. or so he says. he really likes sweets actually. especially caramel. his mom used to sneak him candies and its a mixture of just that positive association and also just. sweets good. that just makes him really love candy.

sorin (has the bandage over eye and the burn scars. also a ginger. mostly drawn in a yellow-gold) does really?? have??? a favorite food???or a favorite thing to eat???? he takes what he gets and at the least he knows that bread at the least is semi-reliable. ruresi while it was still up wasnt especially known for their food and it really shows?? well at least, sorin says that but conan has noticed that sorin sometimes stares at cakes for a long time………..

(conan buys every cake he sees sorin staring at then always eat a bit before going “oh wow!! i cant finish this sorin u can have it”. sorin is always a bit skeptical abt actually getting it and every other bite asks if conan is Really Sure He Can Have All This. but he eat its every time.)

Art Growth Compilation

I really enjoy doing posts about improvement in art.

It makes me feel better about my work, especially with how busy I am these days.

I wanted to compile all the comparisons I’ve made over the years and kinda discuss the posts, for myself or others.

I thought it’d be funny to start with comparing how I first drew on a tablet, using dodge and burn tools, to how I do now which is using layers and actually painting. It’s funny to look back on that, you know?

I linked the post I made, compiling all the month to month memes from 2003-2017 that I try and do yearly. And everything else is under a cut ;w;’‘/

Most artists have done a drawing of themselves and a few Pokemon, or their team. I did that in 2010, and was dissatisfied with my work...

I took a crack again in 2013 after I’d learned to draw more animals and not be so Edgy(tm) I really liked the results. I still didn’t use references though, because I was lazy. I just didn’t want to. I still was on that boat feeling like I was CHEATING. I wasn’t being CREATIVE if I looked at references.

Artists get stuck on using reference and it’s AWFUL. USE THEM. USE TWENTY. LEARN!! It’s so HELPFUL, I wish I had started sooner.

In 2014 though -

I tried again.

I had gotten better at anatomy, but most of all, I started to work off references more. I started to really focus on not stylizing so much, but to work on actually making things look like things. I started to work on caring about COMPARISON sizes. Composition!!

While Pokemon reference sizes are -wiggle hands- and while my team changed up, I was satisfied that I could draw Arbok ACTUALLY like a cobra now, Meowth is easy given it’s just a noseless cat so to speak, Haunter is literally a triangle cloud - I was satisfied having drawn that team.

My secondary team in the new games? I was excited to draw them. It was fresh and new and FUN and it turned out PRECIOUS.

I learned better how to proportion things in an image for layout, and just... making characters feel COHESIVE in the same space.

It was a nice thing to keep visiting. I have a sketch in the works for an update even hopefully.

These pieces are kind of interesting to me too, because they’re towards the end of my era of THIN lineart?

My lineart has gone from this, and THIS, to this.

Literally I use to not believe in line weight, I can still do thin work of course, but I’m not a fan of trying to FORCE it like I use to? Even the second link, I went from the SMALLEST brush in Sai, to using a marker brush that had barely ANY give, to a custom brush on Sai that acts like a Paint Chat brush I use to use with friends online!

That’s what I mean about style too, like you may reserve yourself about things - like not coloring black in and outlining with white, or certain ways you do things. But the growth and changing and figuring FUN ways to color that black etc is where the fun of art comes in, to me??

Learn. EXPERIMENT. PUSH!

A few months ago, I did my first redraw. Of this piece from 2012.

Six years difference.

This was interesting for a number of reasons. There’s aspects I like more in the old one, but not many. I really like the pose a bit better, but I like the casual closeness that I did in the new one because that’s more my Shepard.

But technically speaking, it’s worlds better because I took time. I paid attention to details. I did fun things instead of rushing. I took time with my coloring and didn’t SMEAR it around. I had a friend who use to complain I drew so fast and they felt so SLOW, but I love what that taught me. I started taking more time on my art, and enjoying it more since I caught more mistakes and vastly improved. By leaps and bounds.

It’s amazing what a difference six years makes in not only style, which is often a FOCUS of these things? My style has come awkwardly and naturally to me over the years of critically picking certain things apart? but I really love where it’s gotten.

I have things I want to get back to, but I love... where it is, and CAN be?

But it’s wild to me how much change happens in technical handling? It’s a hand in hand thing, you can’t focus on one or the other only, or the other suffers.

Honestly this has been my favorite improvement to notice though?

Kisame was a character I felt I should be able to draw EASILY? Not so much. Itachi? ALSO EASY. Not so much??

Kisame has weird eyes to grasp how to draw? Thus focusing on them kept making them wonky to me!! On top of that, he’s everything I’ve been use to drawing for AGES because he has a muscular body, with a smaller waist? ... that was something I was use to drawing? I still was awkward getting back into the swing of that... Drawing HIS HAIR though? NOT SO EASY....

But like, Itachi should have been easy, but I have a thing about him appearing too feminine as he gets drawn because his eyelashes, and I’ve really found a nice... medium at this point?

But even still like my face styles and eye styles are finally to a comfortable point for me? I have stopped focusing on some weird things with Itachi’s hair and just... DO IT? But even still like...

The improvement here is literally just if I don’t know how to do something, or I’m not satisfied with how I do it? I just keep at it.

It’s a theme of this post honestly... repetition, persistence.

Keep drawing it. Keep trying to figure out what it is that’s catching you off about how you do it. Don’t like how you do eyes or how they fit on the face? Look at facial structures and references and figure it out. Draw them separate and figure out how to apply them to what you are.

Remember there’s a skull in there. I draw the holes in the skull like the eye sockets, and the nose area to help my proportions for SURE.

I’ve also gotten to a nice marriage in my lineart? The piece before the recent one, those lines feel HARDER or HEAVIER? The newest piece seems...softer? Like I’m lighter handed again?

I really like critiquing my own growth on what is good or working better for me? Older pieces it looks like I’m putting lineweight for SAKE of it versus where it goes now?

INTERESTING.

Like this lineup -

My style shifts so RAPIDLY, it still is noticeably MY style to people, but parts shift so VIOLENTLY because I’m constantly picking at what I don’t LIKE.

It’s funny too in the case of Kisame and Itachi because consistently I’m drawing the SAME character over and over - can make you REALIZE how you’re doing something wrong?

Like, here’s a difference of eight years, and it’s all the brush I use now, and it REALLY shows how my style has changed - in the aspect of one point of reference?

I have a childhood favorite character too, of Daisuke, and I use to be bad at drawing boys, and I use to be SUPER bad at drawing fluffy hair?

It was something I specifically started to learn to do? And I started to draw Daisuke every few months or years for a while. Especially when I started to first REALIZE I didn’t like my style that much?

But the middle one was July 2009, top left is less than 6 months later, and the last one is about a year later. DRASTIC DIFFERENCE. But next -

This one was in 2012, when I started to do more with teeth, or first dipping my toes into anatomy. I started to focus more on HANDS too, I was super bad at them. Overall I started to focus more on making my art have...ages? Like a boy versus a man. Facial features being DIFFERENT.

I can look at this boring little bust and see that he comes off more of a teenage boy to me now. I need to work more on figuring how to draw asian features especially the eyes. Sometimes I hit the mark, other times I don’t.

but between this and 2012? Not too much has changed. I do hair fluffier now, and I angle the eyes better. The teeth not being outlined doesn’t give that weird effect where I might give him TOO MANY TEETH....

People do that and it’s easy but whoof.

So there’s still learning and adapting to do in QUICK drawings, you know? but I can still see there’s good things. That took me like 5 minutes to draw? Not bad honestly.

In it’s own bracket is original characters though too?? But also divergent of STYLE shifts because like...

OKAY. Nightmare Syndicate’s story.. started for me in 7th or 8th grade, that was when I was...14? 15? I’ve been fleshing it out for like 13 years, that’s wild haha!! I love my kids and all.

But okay so SIALI. She’s still fairly similar but I restructured her face for SURE. She’s gotten less edgy, she’s.... a teenage girl.

FELIX?? CHRIST. He’s been such a long journey!! More on that later?

Rot and even Cor?? Rot and Cor are a shorter span of development, but Rot started in Highschool so almost 10 years ago, and Cor has been fairly solid - but even just DRAWING him over three years? Go look at how much he changes.. I’m not married to concepts easily. haha!

People act like making a character you’re STUCK with it. Like Oh boy, I better make this character good, from the get go!!

I only worry about that with small potatoes like my Pillar(Gods) designs I just made for the comic?? Even still, small things will change with them I’m sure.

But not only has Felix and Siali changed, but they’ve GROWN with my style and DEFINED it even. I’ve had to adjust my style to support Felix’s look honestly a LOT. Bend my rules. Break my anatomy stickler attitude - and honestly, that’s the thing.

You have to learn the rules and anatomy BEFORE you can break them. A style built upon broken anatomy will fail you down the road if you just excuse everything with style.

Learn to draw the hands. Learn to draw the feet. Figure out the face. Bones exist. You can break the FUCK out of it once you learn how to do it, you know? Like I’ve seen so many styles I LOVE who are cartoony and BROKEN AS FUCK, but there’s still some STRUCTURE to it. Most of those people can still structure a face just fine, and the reason exaggeration works so well is because there’s like unwritten rules for what works and doesn’t based on that?

Idk.

Felix has a very elongated torso, he’s like 7′ or 8′ tall so I mean?? He’s... broken anatomy, but he’s... lanky - but his muscle is LITHE and stretched. It makes contextual sense. That’s the important part.

But even designs, it’s important to understand designs YOU make, or like... to understand they’ll CHANGE and that’s growth within your art too?

Like okay, example. Felix has a millipede inspired monster form. But with designing that? I still have to know how millipedes and SNAKES work because there's bones and vertebrae in there??

But there’s also the difference of like... CONCEPT, versus execution. You can design a fucking badass character, but understanding your own concept is SOMETHING.

I had no idea how this would play out, until I was mapping out his ‘midsection’ spikes? and man. MY STYLE WAS MADE FOR THIS CHALLENGE NOW. Which is so interesting how smooth my style has always been? Felix has defined ANGLES in it, and it’s hilarious tbh?

But even too, I’ve had to work with Felix’s monster form FACE, to break the rules to make it WORK the way I need it too?

On the anatomy subject too, like when I first got into Marvel comics 6 years ago or so? I had no idea how to do muscle structures?? I was so BAD at it.

I can look at this left image and CRINGE so badly at how NONE of those are muscles?? THOSE ARE THINGS I PERCEIVE AS MUSCLES. Like...

A course I took taught me to draw what I see, not what I know. That’s the whole point of that post that goes around about drawing a shrimp. Look it up. It’s hilarious and cute.

But it’s like, asking an artist to draw a bike, you can tell who uses reference and who WINGS it. It’s funny, but like it’s what you know versus what you see.

I started to study anatomy like crazy and was seeing improvements days at a time. The right image was done like... a month later? already I can see the muscles under the pectorals? those look normal now. the abs aren’t dough lumps under the skin in a perfect 6 pack, they’re the actual plane shapes.

I was trying to find a good reference for myself of learning to make men ‘thicker’ too in terms of the waist etc since the left is really...thin.... but...

A bit better, but even still, comparing these two - they’re 2 months apart? and I can see understanding more about arms and how they connect to the body, where the planes ACTUALLY lay for the chest and obliques and such?

I can see improvements from July 2012 up there, to - WHOOPS. I FORGOT TO CHANGE THE YEAR LMAO... TO FEBRUARY 2013...omg

I mean, I could go on and on about improvements I see, when I go through my art though? Gosh.

Like I’m seeing so SO many bad hands and feet in my old stuff, and just CRINGING because tricks I learned for myself by now?

I give so many pointers and streams and screenshares on discord still to help people with art and it cracks me up?? Like...

I dunno. I’m pretty mediocre tbh, but god damn.

Part 2 - Jikoshoukai (it’s looooooooong so please bear reading it at your own risk orz)

* I’m in my late twenties, but looks like a teenager; one time a jeepney driver mistaken me for a college student and gave me fare discount.

* Am a Taurus, I think iirc an A+? (have forgotten about it since high school, during our physical examination at the school clinic), and my birth date sounds like a Star Wars phrase pun.

* Height’s more or less a 5’5” (until that realization a month ago, I always go on believing that I’m a 5’3” lol).

* You can describe me as a (kinda) my-pace type of girl, but in my case, more like a girl who does things in a whim and more or less likely to regret doing them.

* Always bullied since childhood, that’s why I hold grudges until now haha

* First impressions (when I see one) are hit or miss. When a person did something that make me, say, cringe... 👎🏻 unless I can see some progress.

* Also cringed at wrong grammar and spelling (gdi so many apostrophe S’s I kennat—), no offense.

* Is a cat person nyaa~

* Always been drawing stuff since childhood, wherever I can set my pen/pencil/coloring materials/etc on....even on borrowed books at our university library. Shh~

* Speaking of books, since the age of two I frequently read and read and read lots of reading materials—ranging from novels to newspapers to magazines etc. Had a collection of them at home btw, paperbacks and US magazine backissues, mostly. Amongst them, had a few Jan Karon books (under the Mitford Years series) and some Lorna Landvik novels.

* Speaking of library, this is like second home to me... lots of books, computer stations, wifi (lol), air conditioning system (another lol), solo study cubicles to take a nap on whenever time calls for it, and you can borrow almost all of the books (max. 5-6 at a time).

* I’m one of the lucky few who are referred to as the Batang ‘90s (‘90s Kids)—because, unlike kids nowadays, we’ve experienced watching Tagalog-dubbed anime during weekday afternoons after school in the 1990’s and 2000’s-early 2010’s, for one.

* An anime enthusiast, always watching anime and reading manga, one of the reasons why I draw until this day—the other because of my dear aunt (may God always bless her soul~ Also am the Secretary of my college alma mater’s anime club for I guess two years idk? Ahaha~

* Cosplayed twice during college: the first one is a disaster and my second one is super goooood xD (One of my club senpais joked about the colors of the cloth used on our maid costumes—during my first year, we’ve managed a Maid Cafe during our annual University Days—being bright and vivid as the colors of the jeepney routes in our province; he called mine the Marisol, after the Marisol-Pampang route—ctto pic)

* Been fascinated with Japan and the Japanese culture since childhood: during Grade 2, I’ve purchased a Highlights Top Secret Japan puzzle set; during Grade 6, my older cousin who now based in Japan with her own family gave me CDs of Hamasaki Ayumi and EXILE, among others.

* Collected anime posters, laminated cards, and stickers during Grade 6 until all my high school years. Dunno where they are now...

* Am picky with what I watch and read, whether it’s anime, manga, or a novel/book/magazine. ‘Cause I have a damn refined taste lol

* I also have multiple fandoms across some of the genres. I’m an Hello! Project fan since 2008 (first oshimen was Morning Musume’s Kusumi Koharu, now it’s the 15th gen’s Kitagawa Rio from Morning Musume ‘20; also a BEYOOOOONDS fan—but I love all of the girls like my younger sisters....even though my real younger sister’s a pain in the arse sometimes), a casual 48G fan since AKB48’s Heavy Rotation hit the Oricon charts—and kinda supported its international sister groups too, like our very own MNL48...but kinda laylowed since late last year. Aside from MNL48, I also supported its similar (but related?) local aidoru counterparts, Aidoru Sozai and CH4U, since 2018. But, ever since that goddamn COVID-19 virus and quarantine started, the need to support the members had gradually lost in my hands (don’t worry tho, I still checked out on their SNS even if not on a daily basis).

* Before, I always listened mostly to idol songs (75% of which are H!P), but when my old phone broke (and we have wifi now) I tuned in daily to Spotify and listened to some of its playlists—to which I select a few songs and gathered them in my own playlist full of J-Tracks and old stuff.

* I’m a huge fan of Takaya Natsuki’s “Fruits Basket”, ever since I have watched the Tagalog-dubbed original/Studio Deen version on TV every Saturday morning during the early 2000’s. Read the almost-150+-ish chapters during my high school and college days, read some of “Fruits Basket ~another~”, and now currently watching the 2019 version. Also have a dog-eared TokyoPop copy of the ~Cat~ fanbook skl.

* Due to the influence of some of my artist collab buddies and a certain redraw challenge (#HaikyuuRedraw), at almost three? months, I’m basically new to the Haikyuu!! Fandom. In less than a month, I’ve watched Seasons 1 until the first half of On The Top!!—including the OVAs, read the full 400+ chapters of the “Haikyuu!!” manga non-stop (because, ‘it’s fast-paced’ as I have told one colleague before), and its spin-offs “Haikyuu-Bu” and “Let’s Haikyuu”, and watched all four compilation movies. (Now rewatching Season 2 btw...) *whispers low* Not to mention countless fanfictions and doujins...... FUN FACT: If you visited my Pinterest page, you’ll be annoyingly (imo) amazed at how many Haikyuu!!-related memes, comic panels, fanarts and stuff I have saved in my two boards. Also made some chibi fanarts (first one being Inarizaki’s Capt. Kita; will post Kenma’s later tonight) and some WIP sketches (one Hinata, one Oikawa—on an UFO, duh—and a Yachi... all of them chibified) that idk when the fuck will I start to work on them again qwq (Whew... my longest paragraph so far, sorry~)

* Created my Facebook art page and began sharing my doodles and drawings to the public since 2017 (more then three years ago), then since early 2018 started doing MNL48 and other local aidoru groups’ fanarts in trad (colored ballpens and colored pencils on cheap bond paper halves). Then early 2020, I started doing anime fanarts as part of a collab for I think half a year now.

* I have been a member of two artists’ collaboration groups on Facebook—MFA48 (specializing in mostly MNL48-related group fanart collabs) and Anime Art Collaboration Group (an exclusive-for-Filipino-artists’ collab group specializing in two-week anime collabs and other art activities, to which I’m a part of its Council as the Fukaichou/Council VP).
