caroline was sweet.    not the faux sort of sweetness she saw in the smile of teenage girls,   where claws will eventually slash open your body,    leaving you ribbon - tied and rewritten   (ink becomes blood,   a story told only in the flesh).   caroline was sweet in the way that made cassie feel like she couldn’t breathe--    new schools were usually terrifying sort of things,   throbbing and eager,   hungry mouths with all the teeth still sharpened into points.    she touches at the fangs.    if she becomes friends with the mouth,   it will stop biting at her.     “   if no one’s said it before,   it can be an original.   a caroline forbes quote for the year book.    they’re gonna be worth millions one day.    ”

cassie hadn’t done a very good job at painting the poster,   but being here is good enough for her.   occupying a space with caroline sometimes feels like looking into direct sunlight:   @thriev​ can’t be taken in all at once.     “   what i was going to say is that you’ve made me feel like i...     belong here.   see?   that’s not even emo.   that’s,  like,   a positive sentiment,  actually.    ”     she reaches out,   nudging caroline with her paintbrush.   by accident,   paint brushes against the other’s skin.
