No disrespect to all the artists who draw this scenario, but every time I see an art of a clearly mostly canonical Anakin (in same Jedi robes as in canon, got the same hair/scar/etc) just spending positive time with children, usually Luke, Leia, or Ahsoka, I cannot help but deeply desire that child to be saved, like they are NOT SAFE WITH HIM AND I KNOW IT, it stops being adorable when I know that that is a child murdering monster playing around with those poor innocent kids, ya know?

Twenty-seven.
I WAS STUNNED--I HAD NEVER IMAGINED he would get on his knees for me, let alone be physically capable of it at all. The man was all about his pride, I knew all too well. Too much between us was changing, too fast, all of a sudden. I started feeling uncomfortable.
"First off, you have to know that you mean everything to me. I care only for you. That means no matter what bullshit comes our way, promise me that if your feelings are true, you won't ever try to leave me."
"What?"
"I don't want us to start off on the wrong foot. You want me to be completely candid and honest--so here I am." He took my hands gingerly in his. "I'm saying your sister has no hold on me whatsoever. So let us drop that issue between us, here and now."
I found that incredibly hard to believe--all my life, people in my family had preferred Rosalie over me. She was prettier, kinder, softer--everything a proper lady should be. Me? I was the degenerate daughter who they were ashamed of, someone who had let down their hopes from the very beginning.
What was I so afraid of? Heath was confessing his love to me, and promising me that he had no feelings for her. If I loved him too, I should believe him. Shouldn't I?
'You can never trust what men say. They may promise you the world, but what they really mean is you'll only ever be a fraction of the world to him.'
Mother's education had encompassed many topics, her favorite of them all being relationships and men. Because of her own failures in her love life, she felt the need to impart her 'wisdom' to her daughters, mostly me because I was the eldest and therefore carried the higher burden of expectations.
Maybe I had subconsciously pushed away dating potentials all my life because of that. At least in part. I figured from the very beginning, I shouldn't get into relationships if it only meant getting burned. I was too prideful for that; I didn't want to feel inferior to anybody, nor give anyone the right to make me feel that way.
More so than I already felt.
So I hesitated. And Heath noticed.
"I'm different, and you know it deep in your heart. I'm not the kind of foolish lad to believe in silly things like fate. But the way our paths are intertwined--I would say at this point, it would almost be silly not to believe in it, with you before my eyes."
God, he had such a way with words. It almost made me want to cave, but I held my tongue to his evident dismay.
"What more can I do to prove my loyalty to you?" he asked with a twinge of pain in his voice. I flinched. Hurting him had not been my intent, but I also had no intention of apologizing for it, because I was prioritizing myself over him.
"I don't think there's anything you can do," I confessed. "I just... need more time to process things between us. But... I'll do my best." I paused, then blurted, "So what did Rosalie's text say?" I wanted to change the subject to a less serious one, true, but he hadn't answered that part of the question yet.
"She wants to meet," Heath said carefully, probably not wanting to antagonize me. He knew my sister was a sensitive subject, especially right now. When had the axis on my world become so tilted? "For what reason, I can guess: she knows that I met with Pete. And she's probably going to ask about it--which will confirm whether she's helping her father or not--while also trying to act weak in front of me so I feel sorry for her." The steel coldness in his eyes told me her plan would not work, which made me feel relieved.
"Where?"
"Does it matter? I'm not meeting her," he said, one of his eyebrows rising. "I'm not leaving you alone when things are so risky as it is."
"What does Pete want with me, do you think...?"
That was the real question, wasn't it? I was confused as to what he'd want to see me for--we hadn't spoken in years; besides that, we had never had a good relationship for the brief moment in history we'd been acquainted under the title of 'family.' I could understand him wanting to meet with Rose, but...
Seeing Heath's expression harden made me realize instantly that no matter what the reason, it was definitely sinister.
But why? I hadn't done anything to him! I wanted to scream it, but would it change anything? No. So what was the point of throwing a tantrum like a child? I bit my lip in frustration.
"Don't worry. I'll take care of it," Heath promised, squeezing my hands tighter in his. "You are not alone in this."
My heart warmed at his words. How desperately I wanted to believe him wholeheartedly. But there was always that 1% that would doubt. It was simply in my nature.
"Maybe I should meet him after all," I suggested after thinking for a bit. "You know, use me as bait and set up a trap."
"Hell no. Do you seriously think I'd consider that option for even a moment?" His tone dripped with disapproval. "I'm perfectly capable of cleaning up someone like him."
"Wait, what do you mean, 'clean up'? Don't tell me you--"
"What, surely you can't seriously expect me to let him live?" Heath's baby blue eyes twinkled with malice. "He is a risk otherwise. He'll keep coming back, and we'll forever be running away or hiding in the shadows. Why in the nine hells would I allow that?"
"But... but that would be--" I stammered.
"Murder?" It was like he was really saying, "So?" He couldn't be serious.
"You're talking about killing somebody. It's a crime!"
"What solution would you suggest, then?"
"I don't know... but... There must be something else. I don't want to think of that as our first option."
"You wouldn't have to be involved in anything; I'll take care of it all."
"You've already implicated me by telling me! How could I let you go on when I know...?"
He was really going to drive me crazy. I mean, it made sense. I had always known that Heath Ashford was a crazy, fucked up guy. I had fallen in love with him regardless, and now I was going to have to pay the price.
How to make him see reason?
"I would do anything to protect you, Rina," he said solemnly. "It doesn't matter who or what they are. I'll make sure it can't be traced back to us. Just... don't ask me to change myself for the sake of someone as grotesque as Pete. Don't I mean more to you?"
"..."
"Trust me on this. This problem won't go away until and unless I nip it in the bud. It would also send a message to the real mastermind behind the plan, whoever that is--"
That thought made me feel ill. The mastermind contenders were either my mother, or my sister. Maybe, just maybe, Richard too--but he was less likely. It didn't matter; they were all from the same circle--my family. What a sick joke. I closed my eyes, almost willing myself to be okay with the fact, and then to just completely forget it had ever happened. I wanted to reset everything in my life--go back to a better time. But when would that be? My childhood? I had no memory of ever being really happy. My life was an empty shell; it was so plain and unremarkable that I wanted to scream. Had I been born as anybody else, maybe my life would have meant more.
"Okay, fine, whatever--I don't want to talk about this anymore," I sighed, plopping backwards on the bed. "I want to rest."
"You should. In the meantime, I'll go meet your sister and scope her out. Report back to you soon." He leaned forward to leave me a kiss on the forehead, and I felt my cheeks flush in response. I was seriously going to have to get used to his affectionate side--my heart drummed excitedly in my chest.
As I heard him leave the room, I sat up abruptly. Maybe this was a chance to witness things for myself instead of merely leaving it up to someone else--not that it meant I didn't trust Heath, I assured myself quickly. But because I had to see it with my own eyes if it was true that my sister had been wearing a mask in front of me all our lives. The possibility made my hands sweat, and I almost decided against it, but I powered through. No more inactive Irina. No more complaining when things don't go my way. No, I was going to take action. I had nothing to lose, now that I had a partner in crime by my side.
Maybe almost too literally.
***
I had followed behind Heath carefully, instructing the taxi driver to trail his Audi as inconspicuously as possible. Thankfully, the driver didn't ask any questions, so long as I paid the cab fare. His Audi had parked in the lot in front of a small mom-and-pop cafe near the university; it was obvious Heath had picked the place, not wanting to alert Rose to the location of my whereabouts. The sincerity reflected in his actions made me hopeful that maybe, just maybe, Mother had been wrong. Maybe she was just shitty at finding love, and I shouldn't take her words too seriously.
But again, old habits die hard.
I had a dilemma: how was I going to trail him further than this? It wasn't like I was wearing a disguise or anything; if I entered the cafe to eavesdrop, I would be found out immediately by the both of them. So I decided against that plan, deciding instead to stay put in the taxi and pay the meter while it was running. Again, the driver was happy to oblige so long as the fare was taken care of. I wished the window glass was tinted to allow myself better cover, but this would have to do; it was the best I was going to get.
Rosalie was inside and waiting already--she was clearly visible, as she was sitting on a table right next to the cafe window. As Heath entered the cafe, I could see her beaming. Like she was really in love with him. It was hard to see, but I forced myself to watch. I wanted to verify everything with my eyes, even if I couldn't hear what was being said.
He sat across from her, and she pushed the menu across the table to him, which he refused. When she insisted, he tossed the menu to the floor, and I nearly laughed. I loved his attitude towards her--if he kept this up, he was going to get rewarded well for it later. She smiled sadly, then he barked a question, or an accusation, at her. Her face crumpled, but she maintained her calm demeanor for the most part and her hands moved about as she explained her side of the story. Heath didn't look pleased, but I couldn't read anything but sternness from his body language. Then, Rosalie reached across the table and grasped his hand in hers.
I almost bolted out of the taxi, ran across the lot, and punched her in the face. The audacity of her to be doing this, when she clearly knew... Wait, did she? Had I ever confessed to her--or anybody for that matter--how I had felt? No. So then, this was my fault once again. I sank back in my seat, dejected. I should have been more honest; then it wouldn't have come back to bite me in the ass later like this.
He shrugged her off, and said something with a blank expression on his face. She flinched at his words and reclined in her seat as well, her doe eyes fixated on his face. It was painful to watch. Even with this weird conflict between us, I found it hard to suppress the feelings of wanting to protect my little sister--it was automatic at this point, embedded in my body as if second nature.
How pathetic this whole situation was. It was like I was the worst protagonist in the story, idly waiting to be rescued while not doing anything to better the situation herself. I had always despised fairy tales because I hated the weak portrayal of women in them; but perhaps all this time, I had been jealous of their ability to skirt responsibilities and get away with it, all because they were beautiful. And because they were princesses. Why should those automatically grant you a license to be a nuisance to others?
After a couple more exchanges, Heath stood, and I saw Rose burst into tears--it was clear she was begging him to stay, or begging him for... something. My breath caught in my throat. Even in my eyes, my crying sister was too beautiful to ignore. If I were a guy, or Heath even, I would find her difficult, if not impossible, to resist. This was the moment of truth. I held my breath, resolved to release it only when it was safe to do so.
But Heath left the table after all. I let out my breath, relief flooding over me. But that relief was so shortlived as I realized he was sauntering over confidently towards me. In the taxi. I cowered, trying my best to disappear or assimilate into the car seats. But no dice.
Knock, knock.
"Hello, love. Missed me already?"

Tumblr media
"What do you think of this one?"
I pulled a face, shaking my head. My brother sighed dramatically before moving along the display cabinet, searching for the perfect ring.
Just as he'd said at dinner the other night, we were browsing engagement rings for Wanda, and I was (obviously) hating every second of it. My parents thought it would be good to help Y/B/N whilst also getting me more involved in the whole wedding thing; and I couldn't exactly say no to them, so here I was, half interested in what we were doing.
"What if I can't find anything?" Y/B/N asked, chewing the inside of his cheek as he continued to look. "This is the third jewellers we've been to, Y/N."
Figuring it was time to actually make an effort and be a supportive sister, I rested a hand on his shoulder and gave it a squeeze. "You'll find something," I told him confidently. "It just needs to come to you, y'know? She'll love anything you pick."
He smiled at me. "Thanks. I just don't want to disappoint her. The last thing I want to worry about is her hating the ring."
I chuckled, rounding the cabinet to get a look at a different display. "I doubt she'll hate any of this. Girls love jewellery. This is pretty good jewellery."
"Y/N, you hate jewellery," he pointed out with amusement, and I rolled my eyes playfully.
"I don't hate it," I defended. "I'm just not a fan of shopping for it."
He snickered as he continued to peruse the cabinets. "Well, Wanda seems to love it. D'you see how many rings she was wearing that night?"
I breathed out through my nose, definitely remembering. It was hard to forget when her ring-adorned fingers were brushing the top of my hand every few minutes. But obviously I wasn't going to say that to Y/B/N, so I hummed in response.
It went quiet as I tried to find a ring that would suffice. Rings weren't my taste, personally. I was more of a necklace person, so this was just as difficult for me as it was for Y/B/N. They all looked similar to me though, upon closer inspection, had different engravings and patterns in the gold and silver bands.
"So, what did you think of Wanda's brother?" Y/B/N asked, earning my attention.
He was smiling cheekily as he awaited a response.
"Pietro?" I asked with creased brows. He nodded and I continued, "He was nice, I guess. Has a sense of humour."
My brother gave me a knowing look as he looked at the glass display once again. "He's unmarried you know."
"No, thank you," I answered instantly, not particularly fond of discussing my potential marital future with my brother.
"Oh, don't be like that, Y/N," he said with a laugh. "I'm just looking out for you!"
I drummed my fingers on the cabinet top. "Well, I didn't ask you to. I'm perfectly content as I am."
Y/B/N cocked his head to the side as he glanced at me. "You know you can't stay unmarried forever." I opened my mouth to say something, but he was quick to continue. "And no, not because a woman should marry no matter what. But rather because you will most definitely give mum a heart attack."
I closed my mouth, trying to come up with a response, but my shoulders sank at the truth to his words. He half-smiled when he knew I knew he was right.
"I don't want to think about this now," I decided, waving my hand. "Ring. Look. Now."
He laughed again but nodded and stayed quiet. We both continued to have a look around until I was surprisingly certain that I'd found the perfect ring. There was a case filled with rings holding precious gemstones and a particular one stood out to me.
"Hey, Y/B/N, come here," I called him over, eyes never leaving the ring as I moved closer to inspect it. "What about this one?"
Pointing to the glass case, I chose an elegant silver band with a small, non-dominating emerald gemstone sat on top. It wasn't too flashy nor too plain and something told me that it might just be Wanda's taste.
"It'll match her eyes," I said, watching him as he leaned forward to get a better look. "She'll love it."
My brother seemed confused as he straightened up. "I thought her eyes were brown."
I rolled my eyes, taking a step back. "Fine, get a brown ring."
He tried not to laugh as he raised his hands with defeat. "Okay, okay, I believe you, no need for the sarcasm!" He proceeded to call the shopkeeper over to get the ring and glanced at me once more. "You're one hundred percent sure she's got green eyes?"
"Well, they're hazel, but this will definitely compliment them," I assured him, making him shrug as he looked back to the shopkeeper.
To my own dismay, I was certain her eyes were hazel. They were very inviting and the dinner the other night was evidence of that, as I found myself unable to look away whenever she found my gaze. Hopefully she'd like the ring, I guess.
The bothersome thing about my brother's engagement was just how many celebrations that followed. A week after the dinner came the engagement party, a celebratory evening with all of our family and friends and my brother's many admirers. The Maximoffs invited their friends, too, sadly not having any extended family to invite as it was only them here in England.
It was an expensive affair, but so was everything when it came to my brother. There was food, drinks, dancing, gifts and much more for the newly-engaged couple, and I once again found myself dressed in an uncomfortable dress of my mother's choice.
If that wasn't enough of a punishment, I was also reunited with my extended family whom only showed their faces on glamorous occasions such as this one. It's not that I didn't like them, but I felt like I rarely knew them, especially when they shared stories from when they used to see me as a baby and expected me to remember the memory like it was yesterday.
I found myself victim to yet another relative at the start of the evening. This time, it was one of my aunties from my father's side whom I vaguely recognised from my childhood. She'd found me by the snacks table where I was recovering from a previous encounter with a cousin of mine, and immediately began pulling my cheeks and reminiscing on how chubby and cute they were when I was – you guessed it – a baby.
"Auntie, I think that–"
"So grown up, but still so cute!" she gushed, cutting me off and proceeding to yank my cheeks so hard that they began to hurt.
I winced, trying to back away, but she dragged me closer by the face, making me groan with displeasure.
"Y/N, there you are!"
The only reason I knew it was Wanda who called for me was because of her Russian accent, otherwise I was still unable to turn and check because my auntie had me trapped. When Wanda came into sight, stopping by the two of us, my auntie finally let go, now distracted by the brunette. I exhaled gratefully, hands rubbing my cheeks to relieve the ache. I had no doubts they were red from the pinching. God, I hated family reunions.
"I'm very sorry to interrupt," Wanda apologised with an endearing smile as she looked to my auntie, "but please may I steal Y/N away from you for a moment?"
My auntie nodded enthusiastically. "Of course, dear! You're family now! Do whatever you like."
I resisted the urge to roll my eyes as she said that. Wanda flashed her a final smile before tugging me away, near some deserted high table.
"What did you need?" I asked, quirking a brow.
She was looking around the room when I asked her, before her eyes focused on me. Unlike me, she seemed very comfortable in this environment, and the dress she wore was perfect for her. A scarlet-coloured gown that put anybody else's clothes here to shame. Did she just look good in everything or something?
"I didn't actually need anything," she answered, licking her lips. "I just saw your auntie harassing you and figured you'd like the escape."
Surprised at her observant nature, I cleared my throat and relaxed my shoulders. "Oh, well thanks."
She smiled widely, teeth shining and eyes sparkling and I was now beginning to think she truly had no flaws.
"You look beautiful tonight by the way," she said, and there was nobody around to hear it which made me think she wasn't trying to kiss up like I'd assumed initially.
"Thanks," I returned with a small smile. "I– er– so do you. Is that your favourite colour?"
She was wearing a similar colour the first night we met, so I could only assume it was. Which was a good choice, since she looked good in it.
She glanced down at her dress and nodded. "Something like that."
I leaned on the table as I watched her curiously. "Shouldn't you be with Y/B/N?"
Looking back up, she grinned mischievously. "You trying to get rid of me already?"
Shaking my head, I tried to find the words to say that I wasn't and she'd misinterpreted, but she was doing that thing again where she wouldn't look away first, her eyes glowing with amusement. If I wasn't certain before today that her eyes were a bright hazel colour, I definitely was now.
"I'm kidding," she finally said, laughter spilling from her lips. It was a sweet sound and I suddenly envied my brother for being able to hear it whenever he pleased.
"I just thought that you would be together since it's your engagement party," I explained, a little more flustered than I'd wanted to be.
Her lips pressed together in a suppressed smile as she nodded behind me. I spun around, following her gaze, and spotted my brother across the room charming some guests with, no doubt, another epic tale of his career.
"He seems to be doing fine on his own, milaya," Wanda whispered into my ear, making me freeze at the warmth of her breath tickling my skin.
Shivers ran down my spine as she was close enough for her perfume to infiltrate my nose. Swallowing hard, trying not to be very much attracted to her accent when she spoke English but also Russian, I took a moment to breathe out and clear my head of thoughts containing the Maximoff woman. When I was sure I was okay, I craned my neck to speak to her, only to feel my mouth go dry.
She was stood very close to me still, a teasing smirk on her lips. Up close, her eyes were intoxicating, drawing me in and making me forget where we were and what we were talking about.
"Do I make you nervous, Y/N?" she asked quietly, feigning innocence, her accent thicker than usual.
My lips parted as I tried to say something, but her eyes were distracting and her lips were curved upwards perfectly and I suddenly forgot how to speak English.
She chuckled, stepping back slightly, and I wiped my sweaty palms on my dress as Wanda watched me with amusement.
"Your mother is calling you," she said, nodding behind me. And then I heard my mother indeed calling my name. "I'll leave you to it. Try not to fall victim to another family member."
I swallowed the lump in my throat, eyes falling to her mouth as she bit her lower lip to contain a smile. What was she getting out of this? Did she find joy in making me flustered or was she actually flirting right now? The latter couldn't be possible... she was going to marry my brother. This was her engagement party for crying out loud! She was definitely enjoying making me stumble over myself.
"Right," I spoke, finally finding my words.
With a quick nod, I looked away and followed the sound of my mother's voice. I was unsure why I felt the need to look over my shoulder, but when I did, I saw Wanda watching me still, eyes gleaming even with the distance. I looked away instantly, hoping this weird, flirtatious behaviour of hers would cease soon. I wasn't sure I could take anymore of it.
The evening was going well following Wanda's (what I was now calling) tormenting. I stuck to myself when my mother wasn't dragging me around, forcing me to mingle with family friends.
Tucked in the corner with a book I'd managed to sneak along was a good pastime, until halfway through the evening, everybody was brought to the front of the room for an announcement. I almost missed it if it weren't for Pietro finding me and trying not to laugh at my complete disconnect from the event around me.
"They're exchanging the rings," he told me, pulling me from my table and to the front. "Family's got to be there. Including you, Y/N."
I rushed to put my bookmark between my pages as he tugged me along, finally stopping by the front of the crowd alongside our mothers. Standing before everyone were our fathers and the engaged couple themselves, all smiling and putting on the perfect show.
"We are privileged to announce the engagement and union of my beloved daughter, Wanda Maximoff, and everybody's favourite author, Y/B/N Y/L/N," Oleg announced proudly, glass of champagne in his hand.
Both Y/B/N and Wanda exchanged smiles before looking out to everyone. When my brother's eyes met mine, I smiled encouragingly, and when Wanda's eyes met mine, my smile faded as she grinned my way, eyes saying a thousand things, none of which I could decipher.
"They will now present each other with the rings," my dad said, making the crowd chatter excitedly amongst themselves.
All eyes were on the couple as they presented their rings. Wanda had gotten Y/B/N a plain silver band, perfect for the guy who wasn't a fan of jewellery, and he wore it with pride. Then Y/B/N offered up the ring we'd picked in the store and Wanda's smile was as wide as ever when she saw it.
He placed it on her ring finger and she studied it once more, the emerald sparkling under the light and making all the women in the crowd jealous. She pulled him in for a grateful hug, pressing a kiss to his cheek, and I found myself looking away, not particularly a fan of them getting cosy.
"Gross, right?" Pietro asked, nudging me in the arm slightly. He was trying not to laugh as he avoided looking at the couple up front. "Like, we get it, you're engaged."
A smile appeared on my lips as I glanced at the silver-haired publisher, appreciating his attempt to make me laugh.
"Gross indeed," I agreed.
He rolled his eyes playfully before looking forward again, watching as my father continued to make a speech about how great it was to unify our families.
I listened in, though I'd heard the same spiel several times at home when they'd initiated the idea in the first place. Judging from the look on Pietro's face, he'd heard the same, and I was glad it wasn't just me who felt icky about this whole thing.
This evening couldn't end any sooner.
"I just don't understand why I need to go," I complained to my mother.
She was sat before her mirror, finishing applying her makeup and looking presentable for the girl's trip she'd planned for Iryna, Wanda, herself and I.
"Because you're going to become Wanda's sister-in-law and we are all going to become a family," she said like it was obvious, not bothering to look my way. "It'll be fun, Y/N."
I groaned quietly, leaning against the doorframe. A servant fussed around my mother's room, tidying up the mess of clothes she'd left in her wake from picking an outfit. I watched her with boredom, knowing I'd take that job over today's plans any day.
"You might make a new friend with Wanda," my mum continued delightfully. "Wouldn't that be nice?"
I tensed my jaw, eyes narrowing into the window ahead. "Yeah, really nice, mum."
"Good, now go and w–" she began, but was cut off when the doorbell rang from downstairs. Waving her hand, she said, "Go greet the Maximoffs whilst I finish up here, dear."
I sighed, straightening up. "Do I have a choice?"
"Don't forget to smile!" she called after me.
Making my way downstairs, I saw one of our servants opening the door and greeting the Maximoffs politely before letting them inside. Upon spotting me descending the staircase, Iryna smiled brightly.
"Y/N, dear, how lovely to see you!" she exclaimed, and when I got to the bottom, she pulled me in for a surprise hug. "How are you doing this morning, my dear?"
After recovering from the surprise hug, ignoring the way Wanda stifled laughter from behind her mother, I stepped back and gave the older woman a genuine smile.
"I'm doing good, Miss Maximoff," I said, and when she gave me a stern look, I backtracked, remembering her words from the engagement party a few nights ago. "Iryna– right, sorry. I'm doing good. And yourself?"
"Very good now that we're here," she said cheerfully, before nodding for Wanda to join her side. "Wan, what are you doing there? Come and give your sister-in-law a hug the right way!"
I gulped as Wanda did as her mother said, stepping forward without hesitation and pulling me in for a quick hug. Not wanting to look like an idiot, I wrapped my arms around her torso, hoping I wasn't as stiff as I felt. Once again, she smelt really good and I forgot how to breathe.
"Good morning, milaya," she muttered in my ear before pulling away with a harmless smile.
"Morning," I got out, being sure to avoid her gaze as I looked back to her mother. "Can I offer either of you a cup of tea? Or a drink? My mother is just finishing getting ready."
"No need, Y/N!" my mum called as she walked down the stairs behind me. Wearing an apologetic smile, she looked to Iryna and Wanda. "Sorry about that, ladies. I'm all ready to go if you are."
After sharing a greeting with them, my mum led us all outside to the carriage that was waiting to take us into town. We got in and were soon on our way to have the time of our life! (Cue the sarcasm).
"So, Y/N," Iryna said, and I looked up to see her sat beside Wanda who was sat opposite me. "What are your thoughts on this whole engagement? It was quite the affair the other night!"
I forced a smile as I nodded respectfully. "It was a great evening, Iryna. A great start to a successful marriage, I'm sure."
That seemed to start Iryna on a tangent about the engagement and how lovely the evening was and all of the new family members she met on our side. A sigh escaped my lips as I practically relived it with her retelling, making my mum nudge me in the arm gently but scoldingly.
"...and the ring!" Iryna enthused, not noticing my disinterest. "Don't get me started on the ring. Is there anything Y/B/N isn't good at?"
I could name a few things, yes.
With difficulty, I pressed my lips together to stop myself from cracking a knowing smile. Iryna told Wanda to hold out her hand so she could take another look, and as she did, it was the first time I'd seen the ring up close since she'd been given it. I glanced between the ring and her eyes and knew I'd made the right decision.
My mother began to shower Wanda in compliments – "Oh, it matches your eyes, dear! It's like it's meant to be!" – as I sat back and wished we'd arrive at the shops already.
"Between us ladies," my mum said playfully to Wanda, "is it good enough or did you expect something better?"
Wanda chuckled, shaking her head. "I didn't have any expectations, Y/M/N. I would have been happy with whatever Y/B/N picked. But this... this is absolutely stunning. He clearly put a lot of thought into it."
Yes, of course he did. So thoughtful, isn't he? Especially his attention to detail, like when he remembered the colour of your eyes.
Oh, wait.
After what felt like forever, we finally reached the shops and could escape that shrinking carriage for a few minutes before heading into a dress shop to suffocate yet again.
As usual, I followed my mother around like a lost puppy, letting her take the lead with picking some clothes. She was deep into conversation with Iryna, the two of them bonding instantly as they talked about their interests and marriage and their children's engagement.
At one point, I left them to it, resorting to browsing through a rack that had some pretty pastel dresses hanging from it. I didn't have plans to buy anything since I didn't need anything, but it didn't hurt to look.
"Hey," Wanda's voice echoed from behind me, and I glanced over my shoulder to see her joining my side.
"Hey," I replied, continuing to look through the dresses.
She browsed through the rack also, going through each dress slowly as she smiled to herself. "So, you don't like shopping I take it."
I hummed in agreement. "Not really."
She nodded, continuing her browsing. "You don't like parties either. Or dinners." I hummed again and she continued, "And you don't like it when your brother gets all the attention."
I hummed subconsciously, before realising what she said. Stopping my browsing, I looked to her with furrowed brows. "I never said that."
Mischief dancing in her eyes, she glanced me way and winked playfully. "You didn't need to."
Clenching my jaw slightly, I busied myself with going through the hangers, hoping the heat creeping up my neck would disperse. I wasn't going to let Wanda get to me yet again. It was like she had some kind of magic spell on me, making me unable to think straight whenever she was in my vicinity.
"I know you picked my ring by the way," she said after a moment of silence.
I licked my lips and played dumb, not looking her way. "What do you mean? Y/B/N chose it."
She snickered. "I know it was you, Y/N. No man in the world is that thoughtful."
I stayed quiet, figuring it was my best option. She seemed to find this entertaining as she turned to face me, leaning against the rack and watching me curiously.
"I must ask though. Why emerald?"
Fingers playing with the fabric of the dress before me, I shrugged nonchalantly. "Why not?"
She laughed, and it was the second time she'd done so so freely, making the pit of my stomach flip uncontrollably at the sound.
"You don't seem like the type to just do things," she observed. "There had to be a reason. Please enlighten me."
Once again, I shrugged as I made sure not to look her way. I wasn't planning to get sucked in by her killer eyes yet again.
"I'm not blind," I told her casually. "I saw it and remembered that you have hazel eyes that sometimes look green. I thought it would suit you. A mere artistic observation."
"Ah, I see," she said with a nod, playing along. "Well, you have good taste. Thank you. I adore it."
"It was nothing," I assured her, hoping she couldn't hear my heart beating ever-so-quickly in my chest. The longer she watched me, the more flustered I got.
Suddenly, she stepped forward, her hand resting on the small of my back. The simplest of touches had me paralysed, at a loss for words, frozen in place. Mentally I knew that it wasn't right that she made me react like this. But my body wouldn't listen to my brain and Wanda seemed to realise that, clearly revelling in my misery.
"So, you remembered my eye colour after just two meetings, huh?" she asked lightheartedly, leaning in, her hand still pressed to my back gently.
Finally finding the ability to stand my ground, I said, "I'm very observant," and I turned to look at her to show her that whatever game she was playing wasn't going to work anymore. Of course, that was a huge mistake, because as soon as my eyes locked with hers, I lost all resolve.
"That you are," she noted with a smirk, before her hand dropped to her side and she nodded to the long-forgotten dress in my hand. "You should get it. It suits you."
And with that comment, she left me alone to join our mothers yet again. I breathed out shakily, realising that Wanda Maximoff was becoming a bigger issue than I thought.
After purchasing some new dresses from several stores (no, I didn't buy the dress Wanda wanted me to), the four of us stopped by a café for a spot of lunch. Despite the flustered mess I became whenever Wanda gave me more attention than we both know she should have, I was having an okay time.
Iryna was very sweet, wanting to get to know me since we would be family soon, and made me feel at ease whenever she could. My mother was too distracted by her and Wanda's presence to tell me off for complaining, and it was just genuinely kind of nice to get out.
I was drinking a cup of tea as we waited for our food order when my mum tried to get the details on Wanda's newly-planned date with my brother in a few days.
"You're going to the theatre, right?" she asked Wanda eagerly, as if she didn't already know everything anyway.
Y/B/N had talked about this literally last night at dinner. It was to be Wanda's and his first official date, and the first real opportunity away from family and prying eyes to get to know each other better.
"Yes, he got tickets to see a new play I've never heard of," she admitted with a chuckle. "It'll be a chance to get to know him better. The only things I know of him are what my family have told me and what I've learnt from everyone around us."
Iryna smiled as she watched her daughter, whilst my mother waved her hand optimistically.
"Oh, I'm sure the date will go splendidly," she assured Wanda. "It's no secret that you're both very attractive, young adults. If there are no sparks between you, then we're all done for."
At this comment, Iryna and my mother both erupted into laughter, like it was some kind of joke that only middle-aged women seemed to get. I raised my eyebrows and dropped them behind a cup of tea, figuring it was best to stay quiet.
"I'm sure it will," Wanda said in agreement, though her voice was quieter, unable to be heard behind their laughter.
Surprisingly, I found myself intrigued by this rarely seen version of Wanda. It was a similar version to the one I'd seen the night of the dinner, when I showed her around upstairs and the conversation of my brother crept in. It wasn't hard to forget her ability to dance around the question to whether she liked him or not.
And now, she seemed to wear a false smile as she mulled over their date. I guess it was strange to see since I naturally figured she'd want to marry him – pretty much any woman in the city did – but maybe that wasn't the case.
"...tell her what he's like," my mother insisted, pulling me away from my observation. "You're his sister. Who better than you to give her an idea?"
Realising what she was saying, I tried not to choke on my tea. I lowered the cup and shook my head calmly, though the intent was very much urgent.
"She should just see," I said uncertainly. "I mean, what better way to know than to just speak to him?"
One deathly glance from my mother and I straightened up, looking to the Maximoffs before me.
"But if I was to say something," I continued smoothly, making my mother relax at my words, "I'd say that my brother has always been a very respectful man. He's kind-hearted and he's caring."
Iryna was hanging onto my every word whilst Wanda stared at me but seemed elsewhere.
"And he's really excited to get to know you better, Wanda," I said truthfully, looking to the oddly-quiet brunette with a small reassuring smile. "He really likes you."
Iryna mentioned something about Y/B/N being just the man her Wanda deserves, but I was barely paying attention as I looked to the girl in question. She returned my smile, void of teasing or mischief like usual, and nodded quickly before looking down to her own cup of tea.
She was certainly a strange one.

Anansi x Female!Reader: In a flash we'll meet again.
You hope that he understands one day, his father is a complicated man. Man? That's a stretch of the imagination right there. You loved Anansi, loved him more than anything and anyone else in the world, besides Charlie, but, you couldn't stay with him. Children only are able to see what you put in front of them, and Anansi painted just enough of a vision of himself to hide his world from your child. Children. What a fucking mess that is. There are days that you wished that you hadn't met him but that's a pointless line of thought, Anansi desired you, to know you, to have Charlie, long before any war. He may have driven you up a wall at one point but he was family, and you knew that despite any differences when you called he would always come.
After all that's how you met, you weren't trying to summon a God. But praying for somebody, anybody, to stop this man chatting you up in the bar. You came for a quick drink at Randy's Divebar, Anansi materialized nearby (or perhaps he was waiting in the wings the whole time, just waiting, as he had done your entire life) what might be a hideous green and yellow floral pattern worked for him, long lean lines that might make someone else seem imposing made him even more inviting despite the man yammering on and on about himself.
"Bothering you?" He said, he inhaled on the cigarette and blew smoke into the face of the man hassling you. Whichever meathead that was hassling you didn't take kindly to it, but Anansi didn't care, had never cared, didn't care that he was thinner and obviously more breakable. He out maneuvered everyone before ever setting foot in any room, that included you too. "Move."
"Or what?" They said, he'd been hunched over you for the better part of the night but he was standing up rod straight and cutting an imposing figure. First, Anansi smiled, something you learned much later masks more pain and irritation than any human body could tolerate. Next, he picked up his glass and drained it and turned it over in his hands a few times. You heard it, the sound of the glass shattering, the crunching of the bones in his face, and finally saw the mess of the meathead's face. They ran out screaming, bleeding and crying. You should've been positively frightened but you weren't. Not even as Anansi plucked glass out of hands and tossed it into the drink of the man who had annoyed you.
"That wasn't necessary." You said and nursed your drink. The bartender didn't say anything, clearly they had some type of understanding. They moved further down to tend to other customers.
"Maybe so," He said, the cigarette perched perfectly in the corner of his mouth. He pulled out the splintered shards of glass like it didn't hurt, the blood didn't bother him. He raised his bloody hand and signaled for two drinks. "But it was fun."
"For you."
"Well maybe I'll have to work harder to impress you next time." He said.
"What makes you think there will be a next time, and why would you try?" You said, he smirked, didn't smile. His smirks were harmless, adorable, thoughtful. It's dangerous to know a God so closely. You would call it fate, but Anansi hated such words. After all he thought the only stories that were written in stone were penned by him.
"You're Mr. Nancy's girl, why not try?"
"And who is Mr. Nancy?" You asked, two drinks are placed between you both and then a small container of gauze. Anansi grabbed the gauze and one of the drinks, he poured the liquor over his wounded hand and allowed it to drip perfectly into the glass with the bloody shards. He doesn't wince, sigh or suck in deep breaths of air as the booze washes over his wounds.
"Someone important, snappy dresser, charming, and I hear that he might even be single."
"If I'm his girl how is he single?" You asked,he wrapped his hand with an ease that told he got into these types of scuffles often. Again, you learn Anansi doesn't take on any war that isn't already won, that includes your heart.
"Well that sounds like a proposal if I ever heard one." He said.
"You're Mr. Nancy?"
"My friends call me Mr. Nancy, but you, you can call me whatever you want."
"What's your name?" You asked. Another charming smirk, no madness in the eyes, he tapped the growing mountain of ash into the glass with the shards and the blood and tainted alcohol, he killed the light on the cigarette and topped .
"Have dinner with me and I will tell you." He said.
"You don't even know me, Mr. Nancy."
"Well, I want to get to know you, otherwise we wouldn't still be having this conversation." He said, "Do you want to get to know me?"
"I think so." You said, he held out his undamaged hand to you and you shook it.
"My name is Anansi, and it's wonderful to finally meet you." He said and bowed his head and kissed your hand, and when he asks your name you tell him. You don't know it then but you love him, someone so in love with who you are, starting with your name and every other story that you're apart of. You expected dinner much later, perhaps in a couple days but it didn't take much prodding to get you out. Randy's food at the divebar wasn't very good and you didn't feel like fiddling with the oven tonight.
----
You wished that you could properly explain to your son that his father was a God and that made him half and if he chose have kids that would make them a fraction and yet with all the potential of full Gods. There just never is enough time and never a correct way. Even you struggle at times, Anansi appears to just be a man, impeccably dressed, always on time, and two steps ahead at any given time. You had time to walk away, if anyone could imagine doing such a thing, but you knew something was diffferent, something was wrong. Anansi warned you that he got mixed up with some bad people, that bad times might be coming eventually, gave you time to leave, time to ask questions. Maybe you didn't want to know, perhaps you thought you already knew, you suspected he was a criminal but never a God.
Sometimes he's in two places at once, some times things fall to the floor, teleport across the room, but there are times when he is so far removed from you, nothing can bring him back from that place. You were tired of being ignored, once upon a time being Nancy's girl meant something but now it meant going to bed alone and waking up alone, sometimes with Anansi having not moved from his spot in a chair at all. You came in, surprised he wasn't in a haze, he seemed to be waiting on you.
"You're late." He said. An observation and an accusation. You weren't cheating on him, you could, there were so many who wanted you and yet here you were...alone in your own relationship. The perks of being Nancy's girl.
"So." You said, he went days at a time in the same household and yet not saying a word. How dare he get up for going one night without seeing you. You'd met up with co-worker, Higgler, went out for drinks. No harm in that.
"I waited."
"I didn't ask you to do that."
"I must be confused," He said and stood up and walked into the the kitchen and came to stand beside you. "Is something wrong?"
"No, you tell me, Anansi."
"Are you drunk?" He asked, yes, you were but that wasn't why this was happening. This conversation was begging to be had for a while now.
"Does it matter? Would you even care?"
"I care. Of course I care." He said, then said your name softly and pulled you into his arms. You stay still for a moment but it's hard to resist him, always has been since the moment you met him.
"Why won't you just talk to me?" You asked softly into his chest.
"Would you believe me if I told you?"
"You've never struggled with being convincing before." You said and looked up at him. Then he smiled at you, looked through you and then pulled away.
"Take a seat."
"What's wrong?"
"I'm about to tell you who I am and you should probably sit down." He said, so you do and he does tell you. Your head doesn't split open and you don't die but initially you think he's lying. He can't be a God! He just can't be! It's your human nature to emphatically deny what you don't understand.
It takes more than him politely explaining who and what he was. He sighed heavily and walked away from you. He stood in the center of the kitchen and raised one hand and touched the ceiling and flattened it, then his other hand and used his weight to pivot and climb the ceiling. If that wasn't enough, his forehead was lined with eyes and large fangs extended from his mouth. A birth defect? A disability, possibly. He can see this is a lot and came to sit at his feet.
“This can be a lot for most people.” He said.
“I’m not most people.” You said.
“I know, that’s why I chose you.” You looked down at him and took the cigarette from his hand and he lit it for you.
“What type of God are you?” You ask after a long while, you go through two more cigarettes before you feel steady enough.
“Jack of all trades.” He said. “The people need to be safe and laugh.”
“You make them all laugh?”
“I can change the story but not completely remove it, important parts have to stick. Humans are sticky and linked to one another, I can only ease the journey.” He said. “Wisdom in the form of entertainment has been easiest, you know it’s hard to tell a stupid motherfucker they’re doing something wrong.”
“Are you apart of my story?”
‘Do you want me to be?” He asked, you stand up and he doesn’t look away. Perhaps, reflecting during these final moments you see what it is. Blind faith. He believed in you. Despite him hating fate, kismet, whatever you wanted to call it, he always knew you’d choose him. Like a good book, you’d always return, even if there was an entire ocean separating you. If you couldn’t then he’d come to you. He couldn’t unmake himself a God, much like your boy won’t be able to burn away that part that calls out and sings so sweetly. You held out your hands to him and he took them.
“How long can you stick to the roof?”
“It’s not a party trick.” He said and wrapped his arms around you, holding you tight and spinning around with you. When he placed you back down you were standing in the bedroom.
“Says who, spiderman?” You asked and you both laugh. It’s a period of adjustment like nearly everything in your life.
----
You ultmately wish for your boy to understand that everything has a sunrise and sunset. You loved Anansi inspite of every red flag you ever saw crop up, and there came a time where loving and being in love wasn't enough. He was your husband, your best friend and beacuse of that you came to a proper agreement. A moment would come when this world and this war was too dangerous. Your boy, charlie, loathed his father because they were too much alike, both parading around in facades, both busybodies in the worst ways, both too damned pigheaded to say what was on their mind truly at times.
"So you're going to leave?" He asked, it was one of the dumbest thing you'd heard him say. You were finally debased to obvious observations, he was always so well spoken and right now he was holding up a wall watching you in your living room. You'd moved from Chicago to Florida, created a life for one another, brought a child into the world, spoke truth into the world only to watch it crumble away partly due to an invisible war you never saw and the fact Anansi spent more times chasing stories than keeping you happy. Those stories always came in many faces, younger, healthier, livelier people who seemed so different from you.
"Bags are packed. This is where we should leave things."
"You're being very cordial about this."
"And you're smiling, are you happy about this too?" You said and pointed out, he ran his tongue over his teeth and tried to remove the smile but failed. He was angry, but so were you for so many reasons you'd never share. If he loved stories so much he could keep up with them without embarassing his son every forty five minutes and neglecting his wife, he'd always be a God and you'd always be a human who might have bit off more than she could chew. Charlie was a God too, no matter how shy and withdrawn he'd became.
"I know what you're thinking." He said and slid his hands into his pcokets.
"I assure you don't." You said, "Maybe in another time but I can't--"
"Can't what?"
"Can't play second fiddle forever to whatever story you're chasing." You said, "Not for you or for any man."
"Maybe not a man, but a God?" He asked. He pushed off the wall and walked over to you. After years together charm wears off, the butterflies die but familiarity never changes. Falling into step has become second nature, you are so far from the young woman impressed by the cool headed man with brute strength who won every battle before he ever picked an arena. "I know you think you're making the right choice."
"And what do you think?" You asked, "And I want you to really tell me, no cheating, no looking into the future."
"I think that no matter where you go, all you have to do is call and I'll come."
"You'll have three more people moved in before the end of the week." You said, you need to say it so that you know this is really over.
"Doesn't make it any less true." He said and you hold out your hand to him.
"When I'm gone, promise you'll be here for him, he'll need you." You said, he took your hand and dropped down onto one knee and kissed the back of it.
"I'll do my best."
"That's all I can ask for." You said and placed your hand on the top of his head and then pulled away and lifted up your last bag and started towards the door. "If I ever call...it will be to say goodbye."
"So this isn't goodbye." He said and teleported beside the door.
"No, this is just farewell for now." You said and walked out. You don't look back, you don't need to, you don't know exactly what binds him here but hopes he finds something to free himself.
----
You hope one day he understands that his father is not a man and will never behave like one. He doesn't have to, he's not even bound to this planet let alone it's rules, but you hope one day that Fat Charlie realizes he is so much more than just a man and to live the life he really wants to. You can feel when the life starts to leave you and you want all your affairs in order. You move across the country and then out of the country and Charlie followed. He grew bitter and irritated with his father seeing his flambouyant and exuberant personality as a flaw instead of something to carve out in himself. You don't expect cancer to take you, but you've lived a full life and hope Charlie does the same.
You don't expect Anansi to actually show, you don't expect the band, or the kiss that would knock you off your feet if you weren't already in bed plugged up to machines. The nurses enjoy the change in pace and so does Christine, your roommate. Anansi is lively and brings a bottle to celebrate your new change in life, or so he calls it that.
"I'm sick." You said, "I'm dying."
"You're all dying, but it's not a bad thing, and I'm right here, like I promised."
"Still a man of your word down to the parade." You said, you thought the times you got drunk and waxed poetic he hadn't paid attention. You were glad some things hadn't slipped through the cracks. "Talk to Charlie?"
"No, no, you know how he is. Always on about something."
"He's your son and when I'm gone he's all the family you got left."
"You consider yourself family?"
"You wouldn't cross an ocean for no reason." You said. He slid his chair closer, placing his hand over yours.
"You look good." He said, he's older now, or that's what he wants you to think. A little sag here, a bit more hunched over. You've watched him shift his entire body to fit his agenda, this is no different.
"I'm old and bald, Mr. Nancy." You said,
"Call me Anansi."
"Or whatever I want, right?"
"Right." He said and laughed. "But you look good regardless of what you've got. If you could do anything, what would you do?"
"Besides live?"
"Yes, besides that." He said and held your hand in his. His hands have grown harder, rougher. Less story telling, more fighting, much more hard work than he ever should've been used to.
"I want to travel, really see the world, you know I always talk about it but things got in the way, and then Charlie came and I couldn't just take off."
"Yeah, I think I'd lead that boy to an early grave." He said and you both laugh together. A hearty laugh that you didn't know you needed. "Well let me get some things in order first and you'll have it."
"Look, Anansi--"
"You're Nancy's girl, right? You'll have what you need." He said, and you believe him. A spinner of tales he might be but never a liar, at least when it came to you. "Say it."
"I'm too old for this shit."
"No, I'm too old for this. You're exactly where you're supposed to be." He said and you smile, it's been so long since you've done that, you've done more smiling now than you have in the last couple of years. "Say it."
"Say what?"
"You're Nancy's girl."
"I'm your girl." You said and smile again, you mean it, after all these damn years away from him, only an hour together and you've fell back into patterns.
"Kiss on it?" He asked, ever the slick and sly trickster. It has been many years since you've kissed him, it's not just flesh to flesh, he can pour something into you that you didn't know you needed.
"If that's why you came then sure."
"No not the only reason but you know you got what'll make a man sell his soul to the devil and cross the sea." He said, he stood up and leaned over you, not making you work too hard. He leaned on the button helping you lean back and pressed his lips to yours, tilting your head up. You feel it, a tingle, something that starts to brighten and jump to life inside you. You are not a spring chicken anymore, but he makes parts of you spring to life as if you were in the first bloom of your life. "Damn, girl."
"What are you on about?" You asked.
"Nothing, you called, I came, like I told you I would. I've got to get back before anyone knows I'm missing."
"Don't forget to say goodbye to your son."
"Oh, I won't." He said and raised your hand up one final time and kissed the back of it. You watch him go and know you'll see him again but you won't be among the living, this is your last time. You are unsurprised when your tests come back negative and you're discharged. The cancer is gone, dead within seconds, and when you return home you find plane tickets waiting on your counter. Anansi is more than a man and that's okay, you hope Fat Charlie sees that.
-----
You are dead. You know that. You hope Charlie can learn to forgive his father for being so boisterous, larger than life and embarassing, but he is his father's child and it is hard for them to see eye to eye on any damn thing. You rise from the hotel bed and walk over to the balcony and you wait for him because you know he's going to come, or you're going to find him. The land of the dead is silent, there are others, you can see them walking about, playing in the park, running with their dogs, kissing and holding hands, going on strolls. For a moment you think you won't see him, you leave, no need to gather your things, you won't need them.
Anansi once told you about the after life, about what may or may not await you depending on which road you walked. You knew he said he'd never be far behind and you believe that, you believe in him. You step out of the hotel, turn right and walk, going purely on intuition, the hotels and beach towns wash away, through the forests you continue, climb the necessary hills. As you come upon a different world you note your knees don't hurt, your feet don't ache and neither does your back. At the top of a hill is a cave, you pass through the mouth of it and felt something shake and shimmer over you as you enter the room.
It is a large single room, a grate pit in the center of the room surrounded by cushions. There are portraits on the orange walls and shadows dance about the room, you're sure exactly from where. He is laying back on the cushions, his head is pillowed on his arm and staring up at you. He is different, more himself, his true self. His hair is longer, and he has many eyes that line his forehead, and many arms that line his torso. He has a book hand, is weaving with another and waving from a completely different hand.
"You found me." He said.
"For now, I don't think I can stay here, can I?" You asked.
"Not the end of your journey, I'm afraid. Soul like yours comes around once in every few flashes."
"Flashes?"
"It's complicated. You'll learn. All afterlifes are the same in one way or another."
"How much time do we?"
"Oh, as much as you want." He said and dug between the cushions and held a bag of sand. "Sand of times, snatched it off some kid on the way home. Felt like we'd need some time together."
"For what?"
"Whatever you want."
"And Charlie?"
"He'll be fine, smart kid with a good head on his shoulders." He said, he pushed himself up and kept tossing the bag up in the air.
"Tell me what you did when I left." She said.
"Now that is a story..." He said, you walked over to him and the things he semed to be doing to keep himself busy disappeared. He welcomed you with open arms, when you wrap your arms around him the room changes with a snap. You are back in the bar you met in, you pull away and look up. Yes. This is Randy's. Same dumpy dive bar where he inserted himself in your life and you let him. He walked away and over to the bar and picked up the glass of bloodied glass shards, tainted alcohol and ash from his cigarette.
"WHat's is this about?" You asked. He picked up the second glass and poured it into the concoction.
"Drink it."
"You think I'm crazy?"
"You trust me, right?" He said and held it out to you, "Besides, you're already dead."
"There's so much worse you can do."
"Says who?"
"Says whoever you snatched that sand from." You said.
"Touche." He said, but you drink it anyway. A drink. A potion. Whatever it is it makes your head spin, you feel whatever entity you are shift and turn inside out and the sound from Randys came back but it was different. Not a dusty dive bar but the scent of it is still the same and so is the chipped bar. You and Anansi stood at the back of the crowded bar, someone at the front was tearing it up on a saxophone.
"I made arrangements." Anansi said.
"For?"
"Our boy." He said, and yes, why it is Charlie but he's different. Alive in a way you could never put your finger on as his mother. But you see it, at his core, what makes him a God and a man and they're not at war with one another.
"True to your word, why does that make me feel like we're coming to the end of our journey?"
"We'll meet again, a soul like yours, shines too bright." He said. You nod your head in agreement, you sip the drink again and feel yourself start to break and shift. Charlie climbs down from the makeshift stage and tries to part the crowd, but you are dust in the wind.
Blood.
Glass.
Liquor.
Ash.
----
You are flesh, bone and free will, but you do not have direction. Perhaps that's why you hover here at Mausoleum of the fallen. The entities that are sculpted here are beautiful some made of marble, others onyx, you walk by and sense that you are not alone. You know you are a flash, a shift in the cosmic energy and a rarity, you will continue to hide amongst of the morals, walk between the worlds of Gods and mortals....and then there they are far in the back of the Mausoleum.
"What are you?" You asked.
"Choice." They said, the God walked out, impeccably dressed, "Always on time, I see."
"I don't understand."
"You will."
"Gods have never come to meet me before."
"This is different and I'm not just any God," He said.
"How many flashes have we suffered one another?" You asked, you're not sure but instinct in not something you need to find. This multi-eyed creatures stares at you with fondness.
"Seventeen."
"That is not chance, that is planned." You said.
"Yes."
"Why is this different?" You asked, They held up a tumbler of alcohol with ash and glass shards floating in it. You look away back to the statues, there are handfuls of Gods that are necessary, some haven't been seen in eons, they play it fast and loose and are wild cards. You wonder which one he'll be.
"Just is." He said, you have no reason not to trust him despite being gifted with these instincts. You reach for the tumbler but he pulled it back away from you. "The past couple times I meddled but now you have a chance, a real chance."
"You don't think I'll choose you." You said and tilted your head to the side to study them. "Even though you chose me all these cycles."
"The last cycle was different, you walked away, for good, only called when you were about to die."
"And so you wanted to know that now I'd choose you."
"Yes."
"Fascinating."
"How so?" He sked.
"Even Gods, in all your wisdom and knowledge, have your insecurities."
"We invented them, mortals just inherit them."
"Now what will we do afterward?" You asked, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a bag full of sand.
"We have time to figure that out." He said and this time when you reach for the glass he allows you to take it. You drink it down down, swallowing the glass and ash and tainted alcohol, with each swallow you remember a different life, a different flash, eons of you doing this dance with him, each time you're different, the circumstances are different but the last time is by far the most daunting. Charlie. Oh, how many years has it been? Did your baby boy live well? "How do you feel?"
"Cold." You said and looked down and noticed you were naked. "I bet you think this is funny."
"Only in a cosmic way."
"Is Charlie--"
"He's fine, he's fine. Two wives, three kids, a bar. Living the dream." He said and shrugged out of his jacket and draped it over your shoulder. "We have time to catch up on him later, I've missed you."
"What do you want to do?"
"Lets go to a club, I need to stretch my legs."
"Which ones?" You said and then scoffed as you followed him out of the afterlife. You weren't sure where you were going but you trusted him enough, had trusted him after thousands of rebirths, what was so different this time? For so long you two had been together, maybe now you could stay together without the cruel hand of fate intervening. As you reached the portal you thought of one last thing. "Whatever happened to that war?"
"Oh. I ate the people that were pissing me off.. " He said.
"You're kidding."
"Only a little." He said. "No worries, no war this time, just you and me."
"The way it's supposed to be."
"The way it's always been."

Reign Quotes
I never saw any ghosts.
But what if they saw you?
She had skinny legs, a missing front tooth, and opinions.
My dear, this was not an act of passion. It was treason.
Love is irrelevant to people like us.
I wonder whose face you're imagining in that target.
I would rather have hope with you than certainty with anyone else.
Win or lose, you will answer for it. That's what kings do.
You do have a way of leaving chaos in your wake.
She's not just an alliance. She's a girl.
I'm not sure words mean anything here.
We'll prove to them that our union is strong.
Treat them as friends until they prove themselves foes.
Contrary to public opinion, I do not relish destroying people's homes.
I don't care what you learn, as long as you don't forget.
We have positioned ourselves for the worst kind of pain.
I'm sorry, I shouldn't have done that.
I take things sometimes. It makes me feel better.
To see you smile is to feel the sun, your grace.
Do you flirt with everyone?
I'd probably say yes.
Killing isn't supposed to be easy. If your hands weren't shaking, you'd be him.
Close to death, apparently.
I'm glad that my unhappiness gives you so much pleasure.
Don't let fear keep you from greatness.
It could cost you your head.
If servants are gossiping about your unmade bed, it is too late to rectify the situation.
Men must find something to kill from time to time.
Accept that I have lost. I have.
I'm in a nunnery of one.
That's the kind of talk that gets bastards--and mistresses--beheaded.
History is written by the survivors. And I am surely that.
Tell me when you want me to stop.
Happiness is the one thing we queens can never have.
Arming yourself against me? Am I really that frightening?
Am I really stupid enough to find out?
My mother, she was behind this as well?
All her crimes against me were because she loved you.
I grow weary of your threats.
I grew weary of you a decade ago.
That half-blind portrait artist didn't realize I was sitting in a chair while my sister was standing, and now half the kingdom thinks I’m a dwarf.
Love is irrelevant to people like us, a privilege that we do not share.
There are two things I can't abide, betrayal and stupidity.
Next time you see a threat large or small, you cut it down like a weed.
I don't want to do this to you.
Too bad you didn't see this one coming.
When the ax falls on your neck, I will be there.
Off with you child. You've killed me enough for one day.
I don't 'attempt' to do anything--I do it.
Nature is not malignant.
Must I do everything? Shall I catch my head in my own hands, too?
So I sent you here to wed a king and find you engaged to a bastard.
Despite what you may think, I never intended to harm your family.
Sooner or later, blood will be spilled. It's just a matter of whose.
So he is mad...and a mad king incites chaos and rebellion.
I don't make love to you because I want a baby. I want a baby because I love you.
Those who look upon it are taken. And those who are taken die.
We are royals. We have the power to do terrible things. Without trust, we're nothing.
You? What do you have to complain about? You're now married to a beautiful woman of noble birth.
I won't pretend I love you, but we should probably start liking each other, at least.
My first duty is not to my mother.
Don't you think a royal crown suits me?
I'm too rich to care what people say.
Look where our hearts have led us. We've brought you shame.
I suppose innocence is all relative.
I always want to be there for you.
Don't beg. It invites pity and disdain.
Do all married couples have these struggles?
I think you've redefined marital discord.
Nothing bothers me more than problems I've already solved coming back to be problems again.
Am I the only one in this bed with something to forget?
I never dreamt that I'd be wed to a bastard with an imaginary title.
Losing bothers me.
Trust is a luxury I can no longer afford.
You shouldn't have to live like this.
What happens when being a good king means being a bad husband?
I don't need to be part of your schemes.
You no longer have the privilege of obeying your heart!
It isn't fair, the privileges we are given...or the prices we must pay for them.
When you are alone and miserable, remember this was the moment you threw your happiness away.
This marriage is no longer something that happened to me...you are what I want.
Don't get sentimental about a father who was never sentimental about you.
His life was there for the taking. So I took it.
Royals are always at war.
An interesting choice. Assuming you let her know she has one.
All I have to offer you...is me.
I've come to offer you something. The destruction of our mutual enemy.
Common lore is that your teeth are filed into points and your eyes are black with rage.
Ruling requires that your hands be drenched in blood.
What else could I be but a witch?
You are my husband and my king.
You crushed the rebellion by yourself.
If we die, it is at her hands. And if we live I will never forgive her for this.
I'm saying that should anything happen to either of us I hope that you'll remember me not as the man who lied or betrayed you, I hope you'll remember me as the man who would have cherished you if he'd had the chance.
And real love never fades, not truly.
Just know whatever happens, this is not the end I dreamed for us.
I refuse to surrender. My reign will not end without a fight.
Whose blood concerns you more, your husband or your lover's?
All that stands between him and the crown is my head.
Is this how it's going to be from now on? Both of us constantly wondering what the other is up to?
Long live his majesty.
Contempt alone is not enough to condemn a man. Even the contempt of a king.
We're all basically fallen women.
Our love will die here.
It was rather a miracle.
Just don't expect a fond farewell from me. Or my trust. Ever again.
Do not test my power and do not tempt my fury.
If I'm as responsible as you say, I will never forgive myself.
I never imagined you'd kill him by breaking his heart.
The truth of your betrayal was the last thing that he heard before he collapsed.
I will spill blood to defend what's mine.
So you're my new keeper.
You are a necessary evil whose orbit I can't seem to escape.
But you have to know, that no matter your choices, you still have a husband who would do anything to make you happy.
I opened my heart to a liar.
And now I am lying for you, lying even to my brother, protecting you as you take comfort in the arms of another.
Build a future controlled by you, not the changeable heart of a woman.
When you were a child, there were dozens of little girls whose families begged me for that position, but I chose you because you played well together, because you didn't hurt or throw mud at her. But now you have done both.
You are on the cusp of losing your country.
You poisoned a king and a queen and I helped you get away with it. We each hold a noose for the other.
What I meant is your official mourning period is over.
You say that as if I just won a prize. You can't be serious.
Thank you for pointing out the obvious and will you please stop doting on my mother!
Thank you for pointing out the obvious and will you please stop doting on my mother!
Because I love you. And one of us should be happy.
There are those who merely believe they have power, and there are those who actually have it.
Oh, is that caring? It sounds to me like a man trying to tighten his grip on a woman.
Such haste! I haven't properly mocked you for saving the life of your mother's worst enemy.
Congratulations, you've used your knowledge of the heart's noblest emotion to manipulate and destroy someone.
I don't feel strong. I feel like I'm sleepwalking and I don't know how to wake up.
I will be your wife in name only.
Look where that love has brought us.
At least my family will cry at my funeral.
She sent you to woo me, didn't she?
The only alliance I'm interested is temporary, delicious and bad.
Do not seek to take before I can give.
here are some lines I will not cross even to save myself.
I wanted to give you the chance to do the right thing and I still believe you will.
It's a very romantic story, actually. Father threatened to kill them both if they didn't marry.
I need to handle this on my own and to do it my way. What I need from you is to be patient and to believe in me.
My dear, never give up a crown to anybody.
Are you seriously, seriously suggesting that you want to watch me bathe in return for getting my dowry back?
You know that as a Queen, you put on an act. You can't always show what's in your heart. The same is true for being a wife.
We're women. We're not allowed to have things of our own.
Do you worry that I can't bear you a child?
Does it bring us closer for you to know that your failure disappoints me beyond words?
In the name of justice and tolerance you will drive your people to civil war.
My ladies brought this to me months ago. I read it in an hour.
Have you ever been in love?
Don't you turn your back on me. I am more than your friend. I am your Queen!
I can't be ruled by desire. It's nothing to build a life on.
Your figure's gonna go to hell anyway so you might as well eat up. You are feeding the future King.
It's been some weeks now but I wanted to be sure and I am sure. I am with child, our child, at last!
You lie to your guests and then you threaten them with weapons? We will not be treated this way!
Asking you to know your place is like asking the sun not to shine.
It's must be hard. Once a Queen, now the Queen Mother. Decorative, like an expensive vase.
There's a new day coming, and you are on the wrong side.
Are all powerful men so insecure?
Innocent men shouldn't die alone.
You think you're untouchable, that your sins will stay buried, but they don't.
Of all the people you could have slept with, did it have to be one of my ladies? One of my closest friends?
I am your Queen. I command you.
One bedroom for husband and wife. Good luck with that!
Am I really planning a life, a future, without you?
I will not live in fear of her.
Are you trying to blame a woman for a man’s choices?
It was your spies who got that information to me wasn’t it.
I hope your wings are strong you vulture! You will be circling for quite some times.
What’s the cost of a king’s life?
I always knew we would be wed. Even when I first returned.
I see such beauty. Such beauty you have brought me.
You must wed again. You must love again.
I will never love anyone, the way I love you.
I can’t let him go.
Let him go, and hold on to me.
We were suppose to dance under the stars.
I may still a Queen.
Is that it? Our courtship is over. Was I wrong in thinking it was going well?
No matter what you might think, I can’t just force men to fall in love with me.
That is not a strategy.
I am a queen, about to marry a broken Prince for power...
I need proof before the wedding happens.
You two have become thick as thieves.
Do you still hold it agents me that I defended her agents a false accusation of murder?!
It's time to accept my fate
I will not be chased out of my country before I’ve even retuned.
I will fight fire, with fire.
The day may come where we may find ourselves on the battle field. What would you do then?
Impressive. Where did you learn to shoot like that?
Those memories are a part of me.
You love power!
You despise me, yet you expect a free ride!
I think I shall never see you again.
We have to stop them.
Give me your sword.
You took my heart! And now I’ve come to repay you.
I have come for my throne.
Queens do not bow to their subjects. It is in-fact, quite the other way around.
And may God, and your Queen. Have mercy of your soul.
Men don’t like taking orders from woman, they can barely stand speaking to them.
He knows I speak the truth.
Who cares about right or wrong, if you're dead!
I don’t have much to live for these days, but I would still die for my children.
She does have her moments doesn't she.
I’m sorry I wasn’t the mother you wanted me to be. I did my best.
Why would my presence startle you? Oh because you married my lover.
You requested a five course meals, I offer you seven!
Your love, it gave him so much joy, and that's what you must remember.
How can I pray to God, when I am certain he doesn’t not hear me.
My election could mean the end of your nation.
If I cannot disprove these charges I will swing from a rope.
What if he dies?!
We were here! We were playing a game of chess- which I won.
From the moment you were born, our relationship has been complicated.
We live in a word that undervalues woman.
I may be guilty of favouring my sons over my daughters.
And when you are wed, and you leave this home, it will break my heart.
You are offering me a kindness, a consideration I have rarely shown to you over the years.
Is it so unthinkable, a crime might take place in this castle that I had nothing to do with.
The butcher still insists on his innocents.
Just remember. Enjoy him, but never trust him.
I won’t be frightened into your arms by a dead rat, or a dead Cardinal!
If you think you are not going to talk, you are mistaken.
I don’t understand why we have to take time to visit the Generals.
A king should always deliver good news in person. Bad news should be sent by a messenger. Or let them find out on their own.
Go take back your country.
Our union is damaged beyond repair.
That’s the most flattering thing you’ve ever said to me.
Please tell me that wasn't you.
I need you here, too see you, even if I can’t touch you.
I am paying the price. I feel like a prisoner.
I am their Queen. Their whispers are treason.
Your highness, you are a vision.
This thing between us. It must end.
I’m ready to accept his proposal.
If is a fact of our time. A man rules his wife. Even if his wife is a Queen.
And it will be the challenge of my life, not to kill her.
Perhaps I forgot what it means to be a queen.
I shall never name an heir unless it is my own child.
To name a successor is to place a target on one's self.
Perhaps it better to outright refuse him. Be brutal and direct.
Don’t misjudge me. I am my father’s son.
All that’s left now, is for me to enjoy my final hours.
Well, I suppose you’ll have to settle with being the Queen of two nations, not three.
You cannot keep me in a cage. Even one built with love.
We were meant to be happy, and we were. But I have another fate.
Show people you are worthy of the post you hold, and no one will remember how you rose to it.
Love is never simple. Not that I'm any expert.
I was willing to give up so much for you. But now I want you out of my life. Forever.
Why must the fate of nations be decided in a shared bed?
I receive a letter from him nearly everyday. And I haven’t read one.
I can’t image what the night must be without the man you truly love.
Please go. While I still have the courage to say goodbye.
Sons of cobblers, doesn’t get to be with princesses.
I need to believe, that who we are, matters more than our station.
You are who you're born into, and nothing more than people say you are. You can pretend otherwise, but the world won’t pretend with you.
If you go on this mission. I’ll stop loving you!
From now on, you're only allowed to dream about me.
I have many children of my own you know. Some of them turn out quite well.
She is actually dead in’t she?
What is power, without love.
Be grateful for the fun you had, you must have know your time would come.
I expect you’ll be wearing that when we play cards tonight.
She handles tragedy with ruthless clarity.
I will not help you with this
Ask anyone. I’m as fickle as they come.
It's hard for all of us. Being part of this family.
I may be young, and inexperienced, but I promise I’ll give you an heir.
What’s this play about?
It’s a comedy about royals.
I hear the princess is worth looking at.
It's funny isn't in. Both of us here, we already know we've had our one true love.
You must rule your own heart, as firmly as you rule your subjects.
We may be the enemy, but I am not without my manners.
Your light as a feather, I swear!
Would you be interested in anything else? My chambers for example…
There’s the smile I was hoping for.
Allow me to charm you so more, and we’ll work on that next part.
Men forget, that woman have ears.
My child will be heir to her throne, to both Nations.
This is a course you cannot step back from. And if you take it, I fear I am looking at a dead woman.
We all die. The question is what we stood for while we lived.
Have you already named our children? Or did you leave that part for me?
I did not expect to like you. But I do.
Earn my respect then, as I earn the respect of my men. In combat!
Duels only lead to dead men, not respect.
Fists then. A boxing match. If you win, I bend the knee. But if I win, you will withdraw your marriage offer to the Queen.
I let you win that race.
How dare you, didn't you notice that I defied the queen of England for you!?
I’m going to be your husband.
I had a husband! and I loved him and he was murdered in cold blood before my eyes.
Before I met you, I loved someone. In that way that should've lasted a lifetime, but it didn't.
Let the danger come.
You will be my husband in name only. And we will never be happy.
It is my duty, my God-given birthright and my crown. And I will defend it from anyone who attempts to take it.
I had hoped that our marriage would be a partnership in every way. but with your drinking, your cheating, your blind ambition...
I know we hardly know each other, and yet here I am, asking you to risk everything for me.
With or without your crown. I would do anything for you.
I made you King. But we will never be equals.
You can’t expect everyone to be glad you are back at Court, some of us know you.
He will hang. And I will enjoy watching him die.
I didn't kill him, but justice needed to be done.
This vile act will not ease your pain!
Revenge is not meant to ease pain. It is meant to balance the scales.
He was an innocent man!
Men will never willingly bow to the weaker sex.
I put my trust in you, my Lord.
Well surely you don’t blame me.
How nice of you to take time out of your grievance to mock me.
What about the shame you've brought to this family? Not to mention this country and to God himself?!
I've learned never trust the beginning of a book.
I know this isn't what you wanted, but for now, this marriage will protect you.
When the time is right, I can make you a widow.
We need to show them you are not a monster, by showing them what you really are. A King.
Perhaps I shall have your throat slit in your sleep. Or have the villagers do it for me when they come for us to root out the beast we have protected.
I should have your entire family burned at the stake.
He was born first! That's all he has to do.
I have always put my children first. I have done terrible things! I have always done it for their good. But are they worth it?
Tell your son to come to court. Or I will have him dragged here. On his knees.
I will not be remembered as the Queen that drew first blood.
And I can't bear to lose you.
Our affair puts you in danger.
I won't ever tire of you.
He is a long-term confidante. A skilled advisor and diplomat, whose journeys, for the Crown, have met with spectacular success.
I represent something glorious, for everyone. And if you want to banish every person who is dazzled by me, we'll be a nation of mainly women.
You are more precious to me than my nation.
Speak! While there is still mercy in my heart!
I will bow to no man
I will face ever threat to my reign with sword in hand. And any who shall stand in my way shall fall.
I cannot have her blood on my hands. And I cannot let her go.
Look how far you’ve come. Trading your heart to rise in station.
Now that I know how things really work around here. I'm interested in getting to know you better.
Why should I be interested in you?
I was starting to think you didn't have it in you.
But let me offer some advice: next time you threaten someone, make sure you have proof. A theory is nothing more than a feather.
I am on no one's side, but my own.
Get out of my Court!
It’s fine. A daughter joining her mother for an evening stroll is hardly a crime.
The tears might be a bit much.
In a year, everything will be different. I'll have an heir.
I won’t fall in love with him. I promise!! Please have faith in me.
I was almost sent to a nunnery for following my heart!
I lost both the man I love and the man I could have loved.
I'm asking you to marry me. but I’m begging you to save your own life.
Tell me this. Do you think we can be happy together?
Your food is regularity tested for poison.
You're so clever.
Your lies come so easily.
You invited me here because you think of me, as often as I think of you.
He does have his father’s history to overcome.
I am an ambitious man. And if this is my one chance at King, I will take it.
If I am King for only as long as you live, then I say long live the Queen.
I don’t want to find love. I want to be loved.
It wasn’t easy, I paid a fortune.
The inevitable War of Two Queen.
May matrimony set you on a more honorable path.
I am married to the most powerful man in the world.
Stop starting at me witch!
You're a beautiful, ambitious, young woman who's learned to pull the strings of men, and yed can't see when her own strings are being pulled.
Being married to a woman who is in love with another, isn’t exactly the ideal union I dreamed of either.
Bastards and cheaters are not welcome on the Throne.
You will have love or an heir, but not both.
Lie to me again, and I will open you up right here, in your own house.
If you have a baby that isn’t yours, you’ll hang, unless you cooperate.

Day 4, Part 2: Human Shield
Tumblr media
Translations
Mergi: fighty guy for hire
Koja: little but in charge
Fair warning, someone throws up by the end of the chapter
Ceamar, 4 years ago
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to bite your head off earlier. It's just that, if something like that were to get back to father... I mean, if he thought I had spent the night in Haru's room, he'd–" Marek shook his head, realising he didn't know exactly what Orestes would do, other than that it wouldn't be pleasant. "It would be upsetting to him. I cause father enough trouble as it is."
"You? Cause trouble?" Zain teased, chuckling at his own joke. "I can't begin to imagine it."
"He says I need to be more masculine. More like... Like my brothers, I suppose. It isn't that I mean to worry him, I'm just", Kea help him, he just couldn't put it into words, how terrible it felt to know that he was a constant source of disappointment, that he would never measure up to Antoku and Kuniharu in the eyes of their father.
"You're just you", Zain supplied, glancing over his shoulder to smile warmly in Marek's direction. "I know you don't care, but I think you're perfect the way you are."
He waited for Zain to turn around again before batting at the tears gathering in his eyes, telling himself it was silly to get worked up over something so minor as this near-stranger's placating comment.
"You're right, I don't care." How he managed to say it without his voice cracking was beyond him. "There's only one person's opinion that matters to me, and it isn't yours, or my father's."
"He means that much to you?"
"Of course he does!" Marek flushed, he hadn't meant to put it so bluntly. "When I was little, I fell ill. Haru spent the entire time waiting outside my bedroom, reading and singing to me through the door. As soon as I was allowed to have visitors, he was the first to come see me, like he couldn't wait to be near me again."
He couldn't remember the first part, of course. He had no memories from the days he spent in quarantine, or anything before it. But he'd heard the story plenty of times, and Haru really had been the first one by his side, before his own mother, even.
I showed him such an ugly side of me that day...
"Is that why you wear his shirt to bed?"
Marek faltered, peering down at himself. "Wh–what makes you think it's his shirt?"
"Well, it certainly isn't yours, Koja. It goes all the way to your knees."
"It's not, I don't really sleep in it. I have my own..." He couldn't very well tell Zain what he did sleep in, but for some reason he didn't want him thinking he snuggled up in his brother's shirt every night, either. "I put this on because–"
"Because your father would approve of this more than what you actually wear?"
Damn him, why did he have to be so insufferably observant all the time. He was supposed to be just some fool Marek suffered out of necessity.
"What about you?" Marek decided his best bet was to change the subject, before he betrayed any more about himself than he already had. "Do you have any brothers?"
"I'm an only child. I was very close to one of the other village boys when I was young, but..." Zain sighed heavily, making Marek wonder if he'd touched upon a sore matter. "That was different."
"You mean your Marek? The one you mistook me for, when you first came here."
"Yes, but he moved away when I was ten. The day I became an adult, I left home to find him, and well, one thing led to another and I ended up here." Zain held his hand out, gesturing at the palace surrounding him.
"I'm", Marek ducked his head, ashamed to not be what was expected of him, once again. "I'm sorry that I'm not who you thought I was."
I'm not who anybody wants me to be.
"No need to apologise. Getting to know you has turned out to be quite the adventure, too." Zain stopped at a fork in the path, checking first down one hall, then the other. "You don't happen to know which way is out, do you?"
"I..." He hadn't been paying attention to where they were going for a while now, and truthfully he spent so much of his time hiding out in his room that he wasn't very good at navigating the palace under the best of circumstances. "Right?"
Zain was somehow fooled into believing he knew what he was talking about. Maybe he wasn't observant, maybe he was just a lucky guesser.
"Where was I?"
"Your Marek", he supplied, finding himself curiously thankful for the conversation.
It kept his mind off the alarms, at least.
"That's right. I proposed to him, you know."
Marek froze, too stunned to take another step. "You proposed to a boy?"
"Of course. Does that surprise you?" Zain stopped, too, giving Marek time to catch up.
"I– I just didn't know that you were– that you liked boys?" His cheeks burned as he forced the words out, trying so hard not to make it sound like some sort of accusation.
You seem so... normal.
"I don't", Zain shrugged, oblivious to the fact that his answer made no sense. "At least, I don't think I do? I guess I've never given it much thought... Either way, it was him that I loved, it didn't matter if he was a boy or a girl. Every second I could spend beside him, every smile he showed to me, they were all precious."
"In that case, I hope you find him some day."
"Make no mistake, I haven't given up on him, even–"
A figure crossed their path, at the end of the corridor, where it intersected with another. Zain held his hand out, halting Marek in his tracks.
"Did you see that?"
Marek nodded solemly, twisting his hands together as he willed his eyes to focus on the darkness ahead.
The shadow reappeared, headed straight for them this time.
"Watch out!" Zain grabbed Marek, much to his horror, and pinned him against the wall, shielding him from the stranger's attack.
The heat from the mergi's body was too foreign, too much to bear.
Breathe...
Breathe.
BREATHE!
The world swam before Marek's eyes, and no matter how hard he tried to stop them, tears pooled down his cheeks, dripping onto Haru's tunic.
Shameful!
His own voice, reminding him to stay calm until he could escape, was replaced with that of his father.
Why are you crying? You're a boy, aren't you?
The mergi's weight nearly crushed him, but he was helpless to do anything about it. The moment it let up, he slid to the floor, clutching his head in his trembling hands.
How do you live with yourself?!
"Marek!"
Marek knew that voice. He knew it, and he wanted so badly to call out, but his throat closed up, refusing to let the name pass.
"I warned you not to touch him."
"I, I didn't mean to. I thought you were the intruder, and– You surprised me is all."
"Well, I thought that you were the intruder."
They were standing so close that if Marek could bring himself to, he could reach out and touch either one of them, but they sounded so very distant.
His stomach lurched, bringing up the contents of what little he'd eaten for dinner all over the front of his shirt. Bile clogged his nose and throat, choking him.
"Breathe, Marek! Deep breaths, in and out, you'll be okay." Haru bent down, ghosting his hands over Marek's clenched ones. "I'm right here, everything's fine now."
"You... You left me!" Marek shouted, catching his brother off-guard because he rarely raised his voice above a whisper. "You left me, Haru! It's all you're fault!"
He struggled to stand of shaky legs, refusing to look at either one of them before running off in what he prayed was the direction of his bedroom.
