The Damned Crown of Karsus
Summary: Gale and Solikha find a way into the vaults of Sorcerous Sundries. Gale looks through the Annals of Karsus and Solikha has a panic attack basically. Spoilers for Act 3 Gale/Durge storylines.
I can't stop writing stuff that is so angsty, help (or don't it's fine)!
It was an off day where their companions and them had some down time. Jaheria, Karlach and Minsc managed to catch Rion up with what was needed in Rivington to protect the refugees. Shadowheart, Asartion, Wyll and Laezel had decided to touch base with Guild about any other goings on theyâve heard of, especially in regards to the search for Bhaalâs temple, which they had deduced was in the sewers.
Solikha and Gale had been visiting Rolan, Cal and Lia to go over the tower artillery and sort through Lorroakanâs stash of scrolls and items when Rolan mentioned he discovered a way into the vaults below.
âI know you had mentioned wanting access to the vaults below the towerâ Rolan said as Gale looked as if he was going to pass out and fall over the balcony they stood on. âJust a floor below, itâs a pedestal that will take you to the archives. I didnât venture far but feel free to take a look and gather anything you need.â
âYou didnât venture far Rolan cause you set off a trapâ Cal laughed out loud as Lia snorted. âHe came back all singed and I thought maybe he blew himself up with a fireball.â
Rolan blushed and the trio started going at it while Solikha giggled before she turned to Gale. His eyes were alight with determination and she could tell it was taking every bit of strength to keep himself from bolting back into the tower and throwing himself to the floor below.
Her stomach churned and heart sank. Ever since learning more about the crown, how her and Gortash stole it from Mephistopheles, and reconfiguring it to take control over the Elder Brain; she had been very wary of discussing it with Gale. She knew of his ambitions and through their whole journey sheâs tried to make it known she loves him for him and not any power he wields or could potentially possess. All she wanted and needed was Gale Dekarios, the human wizard. But how could she tell him âNo, I wonât help you become a godâ when she herself had already essentially tread that path with Gortash.Â
Before she could say anything Gale had already grabbed her hand and cast featherfall on them. She leaped to the floor below without even thinking. Thanks to Voloâs eye, Solikha was able to suss out which pedestal was the correct one. At least this thing came in handy, she had to give Volo that.Â
âGale, Iâm not sure this is a good idea.â Solikha was nervous now, a feeling of dread sinking into her soul. She went to reach for his hand but he was nervously pacing.
âNonsense, you are more than capable of handling the traps down there!â Gale said, obviously not quite understanding what Solikha meant. âIf there was a time to doubt yourself it is not this moment. We are so close, I can feel it.âÂ
She wasnât sure if Gale was talking to her or to himself and in that moment she figured there was no stopping him now. She sighed and grabbed his hand and touched the pedestal. If anything, this vault would likely have an excellent selection of loot for them to acquire and they could discuss the book later.
A similar tug at the gut and the appeared in an atrium with clearly visible burn marks across the marble from Rolanâs mishap days prior. It didnât take long for Solikha to disarm the traps Rolan didnât set off while Gale cast Knock on a couple of the chests and door into the next room.Â
âSilverhand, ElminsterâŠand Karsus.â Galeâs eyes are ablaze with wonder and Solikha grabbed him before he stepped on the trapped floor plate. âAh yes thank you my love.â
âJust steer clear until Iâve done a quick trap check, okay?â She looked over the door and surrounding area carefully. Dismantled two traps that definitely would have sent a disintegrate spell towards them and allowed Gale to step forward. âShould be good now, though Iâm unsure if I can unlock this door.âÂ
âNo worries dear, I have a couple more spells in me today.â Gale winked and cast knock on Karsusâs door. It rippled with blue light and a magical click echoed in the room. Solikha felt as if she was going to empty out her guts right on the floor.
Gale opened the door slowly and there it was, right in front of them, just sitting on a half empty shelf. She heard him breath in shallowly and walk over to pick it up. Solikha busied herself disarming, unlocking and scrounging for scrolls and other items trying hard to think of how to tell Gale this was a bad idea.
âThis really is itâŠnot only that but it contains diagrams of how to to put it together. The original designs! I could reforge it, I could..â he looked up at Solikha, her eyes full of emotion he couldnât read. âWhat is it, love? This is so exciting, it could answer all our problems. I could rip you from Bhaal! Cure myself of the orb...â
âGale IâŠIâm not sure I want you delving into this.â Solikha interrupted him quietly, looking him in the eyes. âThe crown is dangerous, I canât lose you to it. I can't lose you to your ambitions.â
âOh pish posh, donât be such a hindrance after being such a help.â He sounded annoyed as if he thought she was trying to ruin this moment. âYouâve done this once before right? Iâm sure deep down the muscle memory will kick in and with your help there is no way I wouldnât succeed.âÂ
She felt dizzy and unsure on her feet. Memories swimming of the cold of Cania, a hand in hers and his smile. Promises of godhood and power on the way to Moonrise. The crown being placed on the brain. Her memories cease to flood her mind and she comes back to the room. How does she tell him to learn from her mistakes? How does she say there is nothing good to come from this damned fucking crown. It will ruin him. It will kill her.Â
âSolikha, are you alright?â Whatever annoyance Gale felt was was cut short as she went pale as a sheet and looked as if she was going to pass out.
âYou canât do this, I canât be a part of this. Not again.â Her voice cracked and tears formed in her eyes blurring her vision. âGale please, please understand nothing good can come from this.â
âYou helped him. At least you know I would do good. Solikha, you know me. Iâd use this power to help the world, not destroy it or turn a blind eye.â Heavy silence fell as Gortash was finally brought up and Gale knew he fucked up. He started to apologize but his words fell apart as they reached her ears and her body froze. He didnât just use that against her, did he? How dare he, how could he? Shouldnât she be angry? She knew she should but she felt nothing but despair as her mind sunk into blackness. Tears streamed down her face hot and salty.Â
âHow couldâŠdid you just?â Her mouth felt like mush and her words choked out between gasps. Panic arose and the room spun around her. âGale I canât believe you just said that. How could you say that?â
She couldnât look up at him but she felt his arms fold around her. He held her tightly and kissed the top of her head. âLove, that was wholly out of line. Iâm so sorry, I never should have used that against you. Iâm sorry.â Gale whispered softly over and over again. Solikha wanted to believe him even though every atom in her body was telling her not to; telling her to use the disintegrate scroll she just found on the book and let him leave her. At least that way heâd be safe.Â
âIf you want to use the past against me Gale, then heed my warning.â She spoke into his chest, still not able to look at him. âThere is nothing good that can come from reforging the crown. You once spoke of Galeâs Folly when you told me of the orb. That damned stupid crown on that monstrosity of a fucking brain is my folly. We need to learn from our past actions. Please.â
She felt a slight change in Galeâs body while they were still entwined. His body stiffened for a second then relaxed. Did her words find him finally? I
âJust hear me out, love. Come to our bed tonight after your bath and Iâll bring you somewhere magical. If you still wish to speak with me, that is.â He said cautiously, knowing he was still on thin ice.
She sighed into his chest and his index finger hooked under her chin, bringing her face to his. He kissed her so gently as if she was delicate enough to break in pieces. He wasnât wrong either, anxiety had filled every nerve in her body as an impending doom set in. She wanted to trust him, to not let this feeling overtake her. To trust he would hear her out and she could walk him away from this. They broke their kiss, leaning together forehead to forehead and she replied finally, âUntil tonight then.â

4, 6, and 10 for durge creator asks?
I realised while typing this that I needed some visuals, so apologies in advance for the badly edited drawings XD
How did Durge come to be? Why them? Was it a vibe you tried to capture or a specific visual you wanted to represent? Did you borrow them from previous works or were they handcrafted for this story you have in mind?
For this question, I'll talk about both Zeke and Shrike (as you had asked about Zeke before)
Zeke was a demon hunter OC from a previous fandom with his own unique lore that I adapted for BG3. He went from being a demon hunter that used a weapon imbued with the soul of a demon (called Caedes) to being a Warlock/Ranger that signed away his soul to a devil (called Caedes) so he could help the devil that raised him. He was created as a durge for in-game shenanigans, but as he was born in the Moonshae Isles it had some interesting lore implicationsâ namely a devil adopting the spawn of Bhaal as his own son to fight the gods. His whole backstory is completely non-canon and is a bit of fun between me and my buddy. He's affectionately referred to as 'silly durge' or 'our dumb son', which just makes him dating Gale much more entertaining.
Shrike is my serious attempt at playing a resist durge. I was curious about how a paladin trying to resist their urge would work, whether their oath or urge would prove strongest. It was also decided early on that they would romance Astarion. Most of their history remained pretty vague until I played more of the game, so their pre-tadpole story only really developed fairly recently. Not that Shrike remembers any of it.
Personality or looks, what came to you easier?
Always looks first. I knew I wanted an androgynous tiefling with an autumnal colour palette, mainly to contrast Breoch's cool-toned/wintery palette. Shrike's personality is much less developed than Breoch's, namely because I haven't had them occupying my brain for as long, so I'm only now reaching a point where I feel I could write fic for them. I find Shrike far easier to draw how I want them than write for them in character.
Is their personal story represented in their overall design? Do they carry any mental scars or physical alterations from the shit that happened to them?
Shrike has a few subtle hints about their story in their design (which I will need to make clearer when I finally draw their ref sheet).
The most obvious feature is their eyes: they originally had two flaming red (dragonborn) eyes, but lost one to Volo. It's surprising how much the blue eye softens their faceâ much like how their personality softened when they were no longer Bhaal's chosen.
They also have red spikes along their tail, similar to the spines on the Slayer form. Plus it's a subtle indicator that they're not a 'true tiefling'
Their horns are tipped with red, blood-stained some might say, and the markings on their face appear more like veins or flowing blood that moves and changes similar to Orin's skin. At least, that's my excuse for drawing them differently every time
Finally, I deliberately didn't give them any scars apart from the one from Volo. They usually fight in plate armour meaning that injuries are rare and, as they have Lay on Hands, they would usually heal a wound before it scars.
Now at risk of making a long post even longer, here's a bonus Bhaal's Chosen Shrike in their Bhaalist plate armour:

Volo: Perhaps you would hazard a guess as to why the mob turned on me? Kyvir: Did you speak out against the cult of the Absolute? They have eyes everywhere. Volo: It is not the eyes that I fear, it is the intelligence behind them. The Absolute is merely the outward form of something far more insidious. Volo: The Lord of Murder has returned. Volo: As he did a hundred years ago, Bhaal has set his accursed sights on Baldur's Gate, and his temple runs red with the blood of the innocent. Volo: And just as then, he has more than one Chosen to manifest his gruesome plot. He has Orin. Volo: And he has you. Kyvir: Bhaal does not have me - I reject his influence. Volo: I see that. You have at least a measure of self-control, but Bhaal's inheritance is not shrugged off so easily. Volo: The heart of a Bhaalspawn is a flipped coin that lands on its edge. Volo: Yours is a family set upon self-slaughter. Volo: When there are two or more, they will destroy one another until a single heir to the throne of blood remains. Volo: In times gone by, there was an errant-hearted Bhaalspawn who stood against his foul father, and brother Sarevok. Volo: Optimist that I am, I hope you are of similar heroic vintage. Kyvir: I hope so too - I think I can be the hero the city needs. Volo: I believe you will be.
"Bhaal doesn't have me," Kyvir says, lying, like a liar. He's going to make the right choice in the end but oh boy is it up in the air for him right now.
At first I thought that Volo thought that Bhaal being involved would be a huge shock to the party, but then he knows about Durge being Bhaalspawn so I guess he was just being dramatic about it. He is in general not sharing any new information here, maybe he's more helpful in a non-Durge run where you don't have (mostly forgotten) firsthand knowledge of all this. I especially like the bit where Bhaalspawn destroying each other until one remains is treated like a Big Thing when a) Jaheira discussed the importance of killing Orin to consolidate all of Bhaal's power in someone who is hopefully reasonably non-evil with you the same night you remembered being Bhaalspawn and b) Orin's already extended an invitation to fight to the death for daddy dearest's favour. Thank you Volo, we knew about this already. Evil is one big happy family that repeatedly stabs each other in the back for personal gain! In general while Volo is aware that Durge is Bhaalspawn (side note, how does he know that) I don't think he's aware of the whole "former Chosen of Bhaal and head of his temple, crafted from his divine essence in the name of bringing the world to a bloody end" thing. ...Actually I don't think anyone's aware of that at this point other than Durge themselves, it hasn't come up with the party.
Assuming Volo's talking about Gorion's Ward here (which I assume he is, whenever people mention heroic Bhaalspawn it's usually them) I think this is the only time they're referred to with gendered pronouns, although given how consistently they're referred to with they/them elsewhere I assume it's a mistake. But once again people are pointing Durge at Gorion's Ward and telling them "Be like them. Don't be Bhaal's obedient Chosen, be like them." Which is kind of interesting since based on the official canon on the wiki they were both active in the city at the same time (canonically Gorion's Ward was a guy named Abdel Adrian who died in 1482 DR, ten years prior to the events of BG3, and to make the timeline fit even if you don't make Gorion's Ward that particular guy they'd probably follow the same timeline) so it's entirely possible that the two of them knew each other and even if they didn't Durge was probably aware of their older sibling's presence. They probably spent most of their life pre-tadpole being told not to be like them! ...Also I suspect I'm gonna start getting plot ideas when I eventually do play the first two games and start developing a character for them because the idea of the heroic Bhaalspawn who saved the city meeting their much younger half-sibling who's now become the deadly favourite of the father they (Gorion's Ward) fought against and choosing not to tell anyone about them is very good.
Also, I love how while Volo does have concerns about Durge he's still confident that they can be a hero who saves the city. At least part of that is because just like Jaheira and Minsc he was around when Gorion's Ward was doing their thing and so he knows Bhaalspawn can do a lot of good, but I think he also does have at least some genuine confidence in the person he spent a good amount of time travelling with. I love it when characters have faith in Durge to be good despite their parentage!

And just like that, the story draws to a close for yet another BG3 run. My fifth Tav has gotten her happy ending and now itâs onto the next. For now I thought Iâd give my little half-elf monk a proper send off and share her with everybody.
Her name is Eryn; 24 years old, Baldurâs Gate born and raised. Blind in one eye cuz stupid Volo misled her⊠used to work for the Guild but has since left that life. She and Nine Fingers have a⊠iffy relationship. I like to think she and Karlach probably crossed paths at some point, given they both have a history of getting into trouble.
I love all my Tavs, but Eryns story is unique- because her story ties closely with that of another of my Tavs. My second durge, Zephyr.
(More about them under the cut if youâre interested)
In his game the dream visitor took on her appearance, and in hers it was his face she saw. They were best friends, childhood sweethearts of a sort. They were each-others first loves and were inseparable but they never became a couple despite their feelings for each other. Nothing ever became of it because in Zephyrâs game Eryn was his first victim. I wanted his guardians appearance to have some significance to him and the story spiraled from there. I thought their interconnected story was interesting enough that Iâd expand on it. In a âwhat ifâ, alternate universe sort of way.
So in Erynâs game Zephyr disappeared without a word or goodbye, and sheâs spent every day since trying to find what happened to him. (He pulled away from her, retreating to the temple of Bhaal. Heâd rather be without her than see her dead) She does eventually find out about Orin killing him, which made that boss fight particularly satisfying đ To be fair the only Chosen she didnât have beef with was Ketheric- which is kinda funny on its own.
Anyways- I wanted to romance Karlach since the game came out and I wanted to give her a badass monk girlfriend. I think I did a good job on that front. Eryn takes as much shit as she gives and frequently bullied enemies twice her size into a prone position all by herself. Getting to see the two of them being absolute simps for each other was my favorite part of the whole run.
Iâll miss them but⊠for now their story is done. đ

17, 29, 40 any OC!
I got distracted with BG3
HERE WE GOO
I'm also gonna include Lorzios and Lixkasalor (my BG3 Dragonborns) as well as Slips, Ja'ava, Cheese man and Rorin.
Heads up for Spoilers for BG3!
17. What positives did they extrapolate from the worst moment(s) of their life? I can't talk much about Slips-Through-Obliivon because spoilers for the fic but the positives they got from their time in Sovngarde is that they understand Cicero more with him being alone and them having only [redacted].
Ja'ava's worst moment was probably
Cheese Man is a spoilt bastard and his worst moment was getting kicked out of the Thalmor, and like, look, it is a big thing, he's lost his family and those he was close too because they wrongly thought him a traitor. He's learning to be less racist though and that people can and will help just because they're able.
Rorin is currently living through the worst time in his life. He sees no positive whatsoever in comparison to the pain he's feeling.
For Lorzios her worst moment was letting Orin get the better of her. Still, what she's learnt is that even without memory of being Father's Favourite Golden Child (Literally, she's a golden dragonborn), she's just as, if not, better at killing now.
And finally Lixkasalor, my Tav. The worst thing that happened to them was when they were denied a job as Court Jester of the Queen of Neverwinter, so they made a pact with the Queen of the Unseelie Court; they are her Jester and her Jester spreads will. They don't learn anything 'positive' in a regular sense, they learn that if someone denies you what you deserve, you take it. And well, what do they deserve more, than to rule the world on their own, with their own Elder Brain obeying every command.
-------
29. They have a chance to get a tattoo: what would it be? Slips would get a tattoo either of the Black Hand or like, An ebony dagger for Cicero.
Ja'ava would get anything Dwemer related, maybe a Dwemer Automaton.
Cheese Man wouldn't get a Tattoo. He's not one of those "my body is a temple" but he gives off that energy.
Rorin would get one of his partner Iireden.
Lorzios wouldn't get a tattoo, her skin needs to be fresh for each time it's covered in a new coat of blood.
Lixkasalor probably has their own name on their back or something just as self-centred.
---------
40. What is their celebrity crush? How would they react if noticed by said crush? Slips doesn't have one, they only have eyes for Cicero and everyone in Skyrim aside from DB and Ja'ava's crew pisses them off.
Ja'ava doesn't have a Celebrity Flush Crush; she has a Celebrity *Pitch* Crush. It's some teacher at the College of Winterhold where her darling girlfriend (unnamed aoy), and her cousin (J'zargo) go to. They claim to know more about Dwemer than her and it rightly enrages her. These two are kept apart because while Ja'ava doesn't usually accept murder as a suitable option, this person definitely deserves to be heavily maimed.
Cheese Man crushes on like, all of the Aldmeri celebrities. *ALL* of them. Rorin's celebrity crush is Waughin Jarth. He's a big Jarth Head. He'd probably ask Waughin to sign a book. He'd be pretty ecstatic about the whole thing.
Lorzios thinks her Father Bhaal is absolutely incredible. She kills in his honour every day, morning, noon, afternoon, evening, dusk, night twilight, dawn. She has been noticed by her Father; do you not see her Incredible Slayer form? Minthara thinks she's incredible.
Lixkasalor, despite being self grandiose and would never admit it, very much loves Volo's works. They're tsundere and very mean to him, but they wouldn't let any harm come to Volo. He's one of the few people they wouldn't care to manipulate because he's fine enough.

Ok so I realized her run was gonna take way too long so I'm gonna answer these anyway.
Answers under the cut bc spoilers for Durge
@official-usdacertified-wendussy
1.) Originally from Waterdeep, she migrated south to Baldur's Gate when her Urges started presenting themselves.
2.) Formerly Lawful Evil, became Neutral Good when the amnesia 'reset' her and allowed the Gold Dragon blood to guide her.
3.) Asmodeus Tiefling and Draconic Bloodline (Gold)
4.) She would be found alongside Volo, frustrated with his refusal to take her seriously about her bloodline and generally being upset with his sloppy storytelling regarding the encounter with the goblins.
5.) Yes, but trying really really hard to resist it
6.) Wyll. She admires him for his strong moral code and seemingly effortless kindness, even if they don't always see eye to eye on everything (such as Xariya taking the stance that Sazza is a person).
7.) Astarion. She connects with him on a deeper level than other companions because of their similar experiences. She has a high insight, so she picked up more quickly on his act and sought to show him that he didn't have to wear the mask anymore. I actually altered the storyline regarding their romance because she knew he wasn't being honest with her, and I intend to post that to AO3 at some point.
8.) Considering the constant homicidal thoughts? Herself. After the incident with Alfira, she gives her weapons to Astarion at night because as an elf he would be the most alert during the night and she trusts him.
9.) Not originally, but she has called it home for a few years now. Due to her amnesia she doesn't remember why she has to be there, but by hunting down the source of the tadpole she wound up having to be there anyway. Discovering her involvement with the Absolute plot was devastating to her.
10.) No, but she loves listening to violin music.
11.) Dual daggers (and spells)
12.) Bisexual as fuuuuuck
13.) She hates that she enjoys it. Worries herself sick about it. She recognizes it as necessary considering her situation, but once she gets back to Baldur's Gate and cures the tadpole, she hopes she'll never have to pick up her blade again.
14.) She likes reading and theatre. Tragedies are her favorite. She weeps like a baby every time. Very cathartic, not very attractive. Post-canon, Astarion finds it endearing and always cuddles her until she settles down.
15.) She loves the tiefling children, with her favorite being sweet little Silfy (not that she would admit that to any of them). In her most trying times, thinking about the children spurred her onwards. She obviously didn't like Raphael or Mizora, but a rather benign character she really disliked at first was Rolan! While she dislikes the wizard superiority complex in all instances, at the very least Gale often came off as having forgotten his social graces or at least having the sense to correct himself when something he said came off badly. Rolan struck her as just kind of a prick. She started to empathize with him more after he tried to save Cal and Lia, and by the time she found out what Lorroakan was doing to him, she was more than happy to pound him into paste.
16.) Gold Dragons. While also sharing a bloodline with them, she also found inspiration in their dedicated opposition to evil. She tries to carry on these traits, especially after her actions as the former Chosen of Bhaal. Between this and her worship of Lathandar, she hopes she can dedicate the rest of her life doing good, even if it doesn't erase the bad.
17.) No. She would gladly leave it all behind, and that's what she ultimately does post-canon. She still uses her sorcerous talents, of course, but not for flamboyant heroics.
18.) Probably still under the influence of Bhaal, and the plot likely would have succeeded. She would have worked alongside Ketheric and Enver until Bhaal decreed they were no longer useful, then she would go about fulfilling Bhaal's plan. She considers Orin's jealousy to have been a blessing, perhaps from Lathandar himself as the God of new beginnings.
19.) If left to her own will, she will die peacefully, at home, surrounded by friends and loved ones. Should the Urges ever return to the extent she lost control of herself, she would commit suicide.
20.) Destroy it. Not only is it dangerous, but it is living evidence of her tenure as Bhaal's chosen. Destroying it is her way of starting atonement.
21.) Fire bolt! Simple, useful, and she can cast it without even thinking about it. Granted, she favors fire spells in general because. You know. Dragon.
22.) Common, Infernal, and post-canon she learns Elvish as a romantic gesture for Astarion. She tries to teach him Infernal but gods help him it just never sounds right. She thinks it's cute when he sulks about it, though.
23.) Settle down and start a domestic life. She uses the profits from adventuring to maintain a home in both Baldur's Gate and Waterdeep, spending the rest of her life content to just being a normal person. Occasionally she gets recognized on the street and she's always courteous about it, but she would really rather just fade into obscurity. She keeps her identity as Bhaalspawn private.
24.) Yes, but she tries not to think of what awaits her in the Crystal Spire. Although being on good terms with Withers (Jergal) does put her at ease somewhat. She will accept whatever judgement awaits her.
25.) Either Strength (upright) or Death (upright)
26.) Butterflies. They undergo metamorphosis to become something new, something brighter and stronger than what they were before.
27.) She lived a relatively normal life before the Urges. She doesn't remember what she did in great detail, but sometimes she'll catch a whiff of candle smoke or incense and she'll remember the flutter of parchment and a quill scratching away in the grasp of a mage hand. (On the meta level, she helped run a magic shop.)
28.) She saw them more as a collaborative unit, but she was definitely the leader. Comes with being a Charisma class, y'know?
29.) She did, but justified it to herself by saying it was exclusively strategic. She would deny it vehemently, but she secretly enjoyed the abilities it gave her.
30.) Her limitless capacity for empathy and forgiveness, and her firm belief that good can come from anyone. When I play her, I constantly think of that Paarthurnax quote: "Is it better to be born good, or to overcome your evil nature through great effort?" She knows she can't wash the blood from her hands, but she believes that if she continues to choose to do good whenever she can, she can even the score. Even if she is never forgiven (and she doesn't expect to be) she just wants to do what good she can to help even the score. A little kindness can change the world, and so that's what she tries to do.
