One of the things I love about Edward Nigma is he's nearly as smart as Batman? Or I guess he's as smart, he just has a vastly different skill set?

He was a fairly effective Licensed PI for a while after all. So yeah I agree he absolutely wants his riddles to take center stage, they're his special interest and his way of showing how clever he is. (and they're fun).

Here's the other thing though. Eddie is more viscous then Bats.

Riddler in most of his depictions has some of the same morality as say Captain Cold. He doesn't kill because the hero doesn't kill. Death is not the game. Peril certainly, one up man ship always but rarely death. And like many rogues he considers Gotham his city.

Now Eddie Nigma? Was a bullied kid who grew into a bullied adult. Too tall, too skinny, too smart with a funny name and weird interests.

You ever seen a bullied kid snap? I know alot of ppl think Riddler is Eddie snapping but I really think Riddler is just Eddie playing the game. He can't out alpha the alphas physically so he does it with his brain.

But here we have a unique opportunity. Ras has taken his Robin. Tim is Riddler's Robin because he is smart, good at riddles, looks at things from a different angle, Likes to play. He's another kid who's too smart. Too skinny. And Ra's Al Ghul took him.

Snap.

Stories say the Demon Head can't die. Now that is a challenge. How do you kill the man who can't die? Quite the Riddle.

And he is the Master of Riddles.

Riddler: Riddle me this boy-

Riddler: Batman?

Batman!Dick: Yes?

Riddler: Who the fuck is this?

Batman!Dick: This is Robin.

Riddler: Obviously. But he’s different. He’s all scowly. Where’s the fun one, who likes my riddles?

Batman!Dick: He’s taking some PTO. Can we get on with this?

Riddler: No.

Batman!Dick: What? Why not!

Riddler: Well I would but it wouldn’t be very fair. See the riddles I had for tonight were kind of specific to a couple of past games me and the other one had done.

Batman!Dick: What you never did that for me when I was Robin-

Riddler: Yes well it just wasn’t as fun with you.

Batman!Dick: So what, are you going to just let the hostages go?

Riddler: Well I guess. I’ll have to come up with something different, we can reschedule.

Batman!Dick: So what, do we just take you back to Arkham or-

Riddler: *shrugs* That’s fine. I’ll just table this one for when he gets back.

(sometimes i talk to people who dream of making a living as artists and they are like grown adults and they still think it's going to be some ideal job where they just do whatever they feel like and get paid to have fun forever and I'm like, this couldn't be further from the truth. You have to love the making of art enough to be able to do it a LOT. And that's something you can work on if it doesn't happen by itself. If you absolutely can't force yourself, or if it's making you miserable to force yourself to draw, an art job isn't for you.)

so there's a reason my new job got back to me so quickly about my application and that's bc it's an absolute fucking shambles like actually perfect timing for me to decide to rewatch the bear bc i have never more felt like ive been thrown into a broke on-its-knees establishment trying to crawl its way up the ladder where i am somehow a godsend to them. my old job was crazy and shambolic in the sense that the industry is just Like That but this one?????? insanity. every 5 mins i am questioning what im doing with my life. ive already had a walk-in fridge moment

It's rly wild that I can't write fic without first combing through the source material just to make sure I don't get the dialogue wrong, while others just see a character they like, don't play the game, and learn about them through fandom osmosis and then write the fic anyway.

I guess it depends on what sort of fic you're writing. I could be worse and actually try to get things right based on Forgotten Realms lore, I suppose, but I can't even imagine writing fic about a thing I don't know at personally, at least on a somewhat casual level.
