𝗔 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗵, 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟱: 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗭𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗰
Today (January 25th 2020) marks the beginning of the year on the Chinese calendar! It is the year of the Rat, specifically the Yang and Metal Rat, the 37th year in a 60 year long cycle based on the positions of the sun, moon, and Jupiter.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿
Though the Chinese currently use the Georgian calendar for day-to-day timekeeping, the traditional calendar, which dates back to between the 3rd to 8th century BCE, is still used for certain holidays and astrology. The English term “Chinese Zodiac” is named in analogy with the Western Zodiac. Both systems use the date of someone’s birth and the alignment of celestial bodies on that day to ascribe characteristics and fate. Both also have twelve primary distinctions represented (mostly) by animals. Unlike the Western Zodiac, whose assignment is based on the alignment of certain constellations with the sun, the Chinese Zodiac is assigns (primarily) by year, calculated by the path of Jupiter in its (roughly) 12 year cycle across the sky. This system of a 12 way division is known as dìzhī (地支) or Earthly Branches, and extends beyond the years to also number months, cardinal directions, and other sequential orderings (compare to Western uses of the alphabet or roman numerals for the same purpose). The association of the Earthly Branches to animals possibly began as a mnemonic device and each of the twelve has its own Chinese character distinct from the one used for the animal.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹𝘀
There are a number of myths ascribed to why the animals are assigned to the year in their specific order. The most popular version places the origin in a race set up by the Jade Emperor, the head divinity of Chinese Folk Religion (in other versions the Buddha takes his place). Those who completed the race would earn the right of having a year named for them. Just before the finish line is a river, which causes most of the distinction in the final placement. The ox was strong and steady and so could simply ford it with no issue, and would have been first had the clever rat not caught a ride on his back, and leaped into first place at the last moment. Tiger comes third, having forded the river but not quite as well as the ox, followed by the rabbit who was able to hop across on floating logs. The dragon comes 5th despite its obvious advantages because it stopped to create rain for a village in need on the way. The horse and snake mirror the ox and rat; the horse gallops in swiftly, but is cut off by the snake who was coiled around its leg. Goat, monkey, and rooster mace it across together, having created and propelled a raft with their combined skills and ingenuity. The dog comes 11th, having been unable to resist playing in the river, and the pig comes last, having fallen asleep. The cat is also sometimes mentioned, normally being cheated out of a spot by the rat. When these variations began, I cannot say, but the cat would not have been a part of the 12 as this system actually predates the introduction of domestic cats to China. The cat does appear in the Vietnamese version of the calendar, taking the rabbits slot.
𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
Though one’s Chinese Zodiac sign is primarily based on the year of one’s birth there are more fine distinctions of time that are also traditionally divided in 12 and as such named with the Earthly Branches system. This includes the 12 months and the 12 hours (traditional Chinese “hours” are twice as long as the Western equivalent). In addition to these additional associations (sometimes called your ”inner”, “true”, or “secret” signs), there is a reason the Chinese calendar goes on a sixty year cycle as opposed to a 12 year cycle: the inclusion of the binary Yin-Yang cycle and the 5 way cycle of the elements (Wuxing). In Chinese philosophy, Yin and Yang are the two binary forces found in all things and this concept is found in many Chinese religions and throughout the Chinese cultural sphere. Related to Yin and Yang are the five traditional elements of Chinese philosophy: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. Both Yin, Yang, and the Wuxing elements all have their own characteristics and relationships to one another which can be drawn upon to build a more refined astrological divination.

Actions Over Words
A gift for @owlsofstarlight. Because I wanted to. Lang provided the Oddish. I could do the writing. It’s the least I can do.
Inspired by this ending from the original Naruto Shippuden. Because Lang shared the song with me way back when, so it felt right to use it here.
We love you for you, Os. You’re not getting rid of us that easily. :)
-------------------------------------------
It was hard to tell what Otoha was thinking sometimes. Whenever I saw them, they always seemed happy and cheery when meeting my worries, hugging me without hesitation when they felt like it.
When they were troubled or upset, on the other hand?
I had no clue. Even now, years later.
If anything, they always felt out of reach. Distant.
It was mere coincidence that I walked into Training Ground Three and found them sitting at the base of a tree, reading a book. Just from looking at the cover, it seemed to be about astrology as their brown eyes scanned over whatever page they were on through their glasses.
Sure, I didn’t know anything, but I could still keep them company. And I had a novel in my hand too, so…
I took a couple steps towards them, and they looked up at me. Through their round glasses and messy brown bangs, their eyes widened before softening in my direction. A soft dinosaur-kind of growl echoed in their throat as a follow-up greeting, and I waved at them even as they broke off eye contact to go back to their book. Today must’ve been a long day considering the lack of words, but it did not stop Otoha from scooting over in the grass to make room for me.
I sat down next to them, opened my novel, and glanced over the words before leaning back against the tree. “Hi, Kuroha-san.”
“Mrrrp,” they said gently. “Why here, To-To?”
“You looked lonely,” I replied, feeling a small smile come up on my face as I flipped a page. The book in my hands was a book I had for a long time, so I knew how things played out in the story. It didn’t make reading the prose any less relaxing with the wind gently blowing against both of us. “So, if you don’t want to talk, we can just stay like this. For the company.”
Kuroha-san made another, this time unintelligible noise. Then a head was gently leaning against my shoulder and I did my best to clamp down on my chakra in the hopes of not surprising them. Extra-sensitive sensor, Kei said way back when. “Thanks,” was all Otoha said, and this time, I could smile and lean back against them. It was good enough unspoken permission. “Was just…”
“Aye,” I agreed in a soft whisper, holding back on the urge to hug them, “I may not know the exact situation, but that doesn’t mean I can’t sympathize.” I gently nudged them with my shoulder, scooting closer to let the side-hug last a bit longer. “Lang and I aren’t going to leave you alone, Osie.”
A pause. Then there was a sniffle. “I-It’s hard.”
“Aye.”
“There’s a lot to do.”
“Aye,” I repeated before pausing. Carefully turning a page in my novel did nothing to help the worry, so I opted to close the book entirely and instead focus on what my heart wanted to say. “Kuroha-san?”
“M-Muh?”
It was a whisper. Something only they could hear. But I said it over and over to Kei, so Otoha deserved to hear it at least. Especially now. “Daisuki dayo. Zutto.”
(I love you. Always.)
Otoha shuddered. Then an arm carefully snaked past my arms and my novel to wrap around my middle, hugging. “Yeah.”
“I’m not going anywhere.”
“Yeah.”
“Whenever you need me,” I closed my eyes and leaned back against them, raising an arm to return the hug, “I’ll be here. In the cafe and in your heart. No matter what.” I paused, considering before adding, “You have a front-row seat in my heart, anyway.”
Something was starting to drip into my blouse and wetting the fabric. Otoha didn’t raise their head from my shoulder, but their grip on my middle tightened and I leaned back against them. “Th-Thanks,” they said, voice hitching. “Thanks, Vy-Vy.”
“Aye.” It was all I could say. “I love you for you, Os. And if you forget, I’ll come by and remind you again. I’m not going anywhere.”
My only response was a nod on Otoha’s part, but it felt like enough. I opened my book again, absently patting the hand still on my middle before humming under my breath. I didn’t know what song it was, or how old it was, considering I could barely remember the words. But it was a Vietnamese tune from my time as Vy, and it was relaxing.
Time passed. Otoha stayed buried in my shoulder and I flipped the occasional page while humming that same, unknown song.
I had no clue when someone had gently laid a blanket over my knees, but once I blinked my eyes, Kei was there, scar over her nose and all, smiling gently.
The soft breathing against my side proved Otoha had fallen asleep who knows how long ago.
“Mind if I join you?” Kei whispered, a book of her own magically in hand.
I smiled back. “You’re always welcome here too, Lang.”
These two had front-row seats in my heart, and that wouldn’t change for a long long time.

I love your idea of their astrological chart! As they're fictional characters, they can be anything we want, and I really like your idea of Adrien being a Gemini because of the 'two faces' of that zodiac sign which in a way correspond quite nicely to Adrien's personality.
But if I can give you my headcanon, I like thinking that Adrien is a Libra, and is born on the 12th of October 2000. Reason being, because in the Chinese horoscope it's the day of the black rabbit and the rabbit (don't know if you know this) in the Vietnamese side of the Chinese astrology, is the cat. So the 12th of October is, in a way, the day of the black cat ^^.
Also, it makes more sense, looking at their yin and yang balance, that Adrien is a dragon child like Kagami (they're both yang) while Marinette is a snake in the Chinese horoscope (being born in 2001), and a snake is yin.
My headcanon is also that Luka is a Rabbit (his personality matches, and also the fact that he's supposed to be a year older since he's Juleka's twin brother and Juleka repeated a year), which is a yin sign too. I have written a much longer explanation in this article here, if you're interested:
Chinese Horoscopes and Miraculous
It was really good to read a different point of view and the extensive research that you too must have done :) keep it going!
Not me explaining astrology through Miraculous Ladybug, but then again.. yeah?
I MADE UP THEIR ACTUAL PLACEMENTS BECAUSE THEY'RE FICTIONAL, if you put their "birth" dates into a calculator, it won't make sense with the placements I made up for them, just saying!
Adrien goes first because there's a 10 photos limit here (damn you, Tumblr).
I'll be uploading Marinette shortly, and their compatibility in love, as well.

(Loa) Episode 64 - What the Vietnamese Zodiac Can Tell You About Yourself Published January 25, 2017 By Jenny Lý
Phước Lộc Thọ, also known as Asian Garden Mall, is the commercial staple of the Vietnamese American community in Orange County, California. But amid the bustling shoppers and overlapping sounds, there is a space of relief. It’s tucked away on the second floor: an altar. Not far away sits an elderly man who appears to be in his 70’s. A sign in front of the table he sits at reads “Chấm Tử Vi” - horoscope reading.
“Most of the time, people want to ask about love or work or if their business will fail,” says Bùi Minh Lê, a long time horoscope reader, having continued his practice in Việt Nam to present day America. He shares that many people want guidance, especially when they embark on a new chapter in their lives.
The Vietnamese horoscope uses a variation of the Chinese zodiac based on the lunar calendar. It uses astrology as well as the time, date, month and year of a person’s birth to make predictions. The Vietnamese zodiac sets 12 animals over a 12-year cycle rather than 12 signs in one year. The animal associated with the year in which we were born tells us something about our personality and our life.
As the Lunar New Year approaches this month, the lines of people coming to see Bùi continue to grow. People are eager to see what their 2017 will look like.
But there are skeptics. Phan Việt, who's turning exactly 60 this year as he's born in the year of the rooster, is one of them. He does not believe in the zodiac or tử vi predictions - even though 2017 is his year. Believers say it’s particularly important if it’s your animal’s year.
“When family gathering, this subject coming up more often you know especially you know during the New Year the Tết people coming in and suddenly this subject coming up. Hey this year is the rooster, and they start telling Me hey this year you will have love, you maybe will have change in your financial, something like that. I listen you know but I don't always believe it,” says Phan.
But 68-year-old Vũ Cường, a visitor at Phước Lộc Thọ, and also a retired teacher, thinks the zodiac is a fun way to learn about yourself and your life. He breaks down the complexity of the Vietnamese zodiac as a classification system.
“...according to the the history of China in particular, and the history of Asian cultures generally, people assigned animals to symbolize time. They classified the years with the 12 animals, one name for the celestial stem and one for the animal. They start with the stem Giáp, Ất, Bính, Đinh, Mậu, Kỷ, Canh, Tân, Nhâm, Quý. Then it is combined with one of the 12 animals: Rat, Buffalo, Tiger, Cat, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig" says Vũ.
The ten celestial stems, 12 animal signs, and five elemental associations make for distinct personalities and years. For example, 2017 is known as Đinh Dậu, or the Fire Rooster year. The eastern zodiac is considered to be one of the oldest horoscope systems in the world, dating back to more than 3,000 years. The zodiac system was said to have been developed by spiritual teachers who, at the time, were responsible for maintaining health and balance among the people.
Trang Nguyễn, a graduate student in Communities Studies at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts says Vietnamese people get to know each other by using the zodiac.
She says, “In Vietnamese culture, you ask someone what zodiac animal year they are and from that you can tell their age because there are 12 animals on the wheel so it repeats every 12 years so you can sort of tell what generation is in or which cycle of the 12 they are in so you can calculate the age in your head. So that's why when you meet Vietnamese elders, they don't ask how old you are as much a lot of the time as your year you were born, your zodiac year and they can tell your age but they can also tell sort of your personality and all the things that's associated with that year.”
Nguyễn adds that her family all know each other's animal year by heart. She shares, “..my mom is a dragon, I am a cat, my dad is a horse, my sister is an ox, my brother is a snake, my oldest nephew is a dragon and my youngest nephew is a dog..”
Vũ, the retired teacher, says each zodiac animal symbolizes a different quality that may carry lots of fortune or challenges. Sometimes, it can help explain why certain people act a certain way. He says, “...the tiger symbolizes strength, the dragon symbolizes wealth, and the rat symbolizes hard work..”
According to believers, not only can the zodiac predict an individual’s personality but it can also forecast the coming year. To see what's in store for 2017: the year of the Fire Rooster, you’ve got to understand the animal.
The rooster is known for its cocky, self-assured demeanor. It’s no stranger to dramatic entrances. This zodiac sign is also known for its ability to work hard and never give up. The rooster isn’t afraid to be loud, bombastic and outspoken.
Back in Phước Lộc Thọ, horoscope reader Bùi often gets asked whether his readings are a form of fortune telling. He says, “Fortune telling is different from tử vi. Tử vi is about the basic elements using the date of birth."
Bùi emphasizes the science behind tử vi and readily admits not everyone believes in the horoscopes. Nevertheless, he still comes to the mall daily to do people's readings. He sits on that second floor inside the mall that features three giant lion figures out front representing luck, wealth, and longevity.
________________ Check back to our Vietnamism segment in episode 9, where Nam-An Đinh explains why the Vietnamese zodiac features a cat and not a rabbit, as in the Chinese zodiac.

short astro notes. volume 6
⛵️ aries can be hard to understand, but they often understand others easily. their intuitive nature is very underrated in my opinion
⛵️ often people who have a lot of family trauma will have saturn or chiron in the 4th house/aspecting the moon since saturn is associated with struggle and chiron can show our wounds that usually occur in our younger years
⛵️ numerology is great for understanding degrees. degree theory is great too, but i find myself resonating more with the numerical meanings of the numbers
⛵️ i personally think the outer planets are also very important because even though the signs generational the houses and some aspects aren’t. i also think it wouldn’t make sense to ignore planets that are literally up in the sky, but i understand the inner planets are obviously more important. i just find a lot of accuracy with outer planets even in sidereal not just western astrology
⛵️ 11° and 23° are some of the most powerful degrees that you can have in a chart and indicate spiritual ascension wherever they’re placed. they’re also underrated fame degrees. majority of famous people have them
⛵️ snake’s in vietnamese astrology are the most likely to beat up someone for sleeping with their bf/gf when they get cheated on. this is because snake’s are naturally very vengeful. they’re loyal until you’re not loyal to them. they will get their revenge if you hurt them
⛵️ pig’s in vietnamese astrology love to eat and sleep. they can be lazy if they don’t have numerology causing their energy to want to be more hardworking. they like to chill

Vietnamese Astrology Traits
• Remember that enemy signs are still fatally attracted to one another but will not last in the long run and things between them could end badly. The matrix tries to set you up and leeches off your emotional energy which is why it sets you up for failure in some cases
• Your numerology is also important and may overpower some of your astrology traits. The negative traits will only apply if you’re at a lower vibration in life
Vietnamese Signs
The Rat: favored by the matrix, if anyone hurts them the matrix will come after them, intelligent when it comes to how they navigate life, adapts to surroundings quickly, most likely to gain wealth (second to the goat, pig, and cat trine), determined, lively, manipulative, will leave out parts of stories where they did something bad, greedy, stubborn, always nervous
The Ox/buffalo: grounded, often comedians, one of the least sexual signs unless they’re born under 1/5/9 energy, loyal, leaders, lots of willpower, strong, dependable, stubborn, blunt, gaslights a lot, can be violent, communicates poorly, too judgmental of others, petty
The Tiger: masculine, good health (unless numerology goes against this), sexiest sign, good fighters/strong, strong/muscular build/fitness model body, good at body building, go getters, smooth talkers, born leader, age gracefully, they have it the hardest in the usa (the usa was founded in their enemy sign year which is the year of the monkey), most likely to cheat (especially the men), childlike temper tantrums, know it alls, aggressive
The Cat: easily understands people/natural psychologist, observant, great designers, kind, creative, stealthy, quick witted, good chess players, third smartest sign, strong money maker, shouldn’t eat eggs or chicken, pessimistic, selfish, plays lots of mind games, often insecure
The Dragon: charismatic, adventurous, intelligent with the choices they make in life, sexy, energetic, powerful, confident, masculine, great fighters, bossy, rude, complicated at times, too demanding, arrogant
The Snake: wisest sign, intuitive, seductive, calm, second most influential/persuasive sign, observant, analytical, vengeful, best liars/manipulators, holds grudges, gets jealous easily
The Horse: very hard workers (workhorses), positive, animated, energetic, warm-hearted, has it the hardest in the matrix since its enemy sign is the rat (the sign the matrix favors), stubborn, superficial, self centered, impatient, impulsive, very delusional or in denial constantly
The Goat: most likely to gain wealth other than the rat (even more than its friend signs the cat and pig), the most good looking sign, most influential/persuasive sign, nurturing/caring, romantic/flirtatious, fun energy, go with the flow, usually into both spirituality and religion (they dabble into it all), funny, high maintenance, manipulative, lazy, has a hard life, lots of anxiety, gullible, emotionally sensitive/the softest sign, needs to constantly be pampered, shouldn’t be aggressive because it ends bad
The Monkey: smartest sign, popular, funniest sign, sociable, intuitive, brave, very curious, plays games with people, selfish, liars, egotistical, untrustworthy at times, always trying to get in others business
The Rooster: confident, humorous, loyal, one track minded, passionate, independent, observant, outgoing, talkative, narcissistic, control freak, bad temper/overly aggressive at times, hypocritical, picky
The Dog: very hard working, loves attention, loyal, honest, protective of the people they love, committed to the people they love, reliable, witty, helpful, overly aggressive, exaggerates stories, stubborn at times, always paranoid
The Pig: humble, strong money maker, responsible, luckiest sign, creative, classy, foodie/food lover, they love sex, tolerant, intelligent, friendly, easily influenced by others, promiscuous, overly materialistic, laziest sign, second most likely sign to cheat, naive, overly emotional, flaky
Vietnamese Elements
Metal: always looks out for loved ones, perseverant, independent, must create their own success, enjoys their freedom, enjoys comfort, stubborn, wants a romantic partner that they can control, too demanding at times, stubborn
Water: creative, intuitive, sensitive, adaptive, empathetic, sympathetic, gains others trust easily, likable, talkative, everyone feels special around them, tries to hard to make everyone around them feel happy which can lead to sadness, people follow their lead, influences others minds easily, passive aggressive, emotionally manipulative
Wood: optimistic, open minded, good at socializing, active, confident, organized, family oriented, good marriage partner, good friends/colleagues, gets attached quickly, always improving as a person, overworks themselves, passive aggressive, gullible
Fire: ambitious, determined, leader, strong, seductive, attracts people to them easily, enthusiastic, very giving in relationships, inspires others easily, affectionate, adventurous, competitive, optimistic, always stresses, impatient, gets mad quick
Earth: wise, patient, loyal, trustworthy, perfectionist, stable, always makes challenging sacrifices for others, good at giving advice, serious, goes based on logic rather than emotions, controlling

Vietnamese Astro Notes
— by novy
Keep in mind that your numerology plays a big role in all this as well. For example: If you’re a 7 life path or born on a 7 day but your animal sign is the Tiger you may still be a party animal and not a huge loner like some other 7’s can be
• Vietnamese astrology does not go by years exactly. The new sign starts sometime in between January or February every year. You must search your exact birth date and year along with “vietnamese zodiac” for this reason in order to find what your animal sign is
• The Goat, Pig, and Cat trine are the wealthiest trine, especially when working together. The Goat is the richest though. Rat’s can also be wealthy sometimes though
• Tigers, Goats, and Dragons are the most attractive signs to society (physically)
• Goat’s are one of the most sexual signs besides Pigs
• The best romantic match out of all the signs are the Goat and the Pig
• Similar to numerology the energy of the year we’re all in effects us. Example: During Goat years people may be more emotional
• Tiger’s are very unpredictable similar to how Aquarius energy is
• Your enemy sign is important to stay away from but also your enemy signs whole trine in general
• The matrix favors the Rats - m(atr)ix. The rat’s enemy sign is the Horse so for this reason Horse’s tend to have the most challenging lives. Goat’s also tend to have hard lives though
• Monkey’s are often very confident but at worst can be self absorbed
• Snake’s are considered the wisest sign but for this reason can be very good liars and deceive lots of people often
• Cat’s are genius’ but will play mind games with you a lot
• Dog’s are the most loyal sign but Ox’s and Rooster’s tend to be loyal as well
• Tiger’s are the biggest cheaters but Pig’s come in at second place and Goat’s at third
• Dragon’s are the best fighters (physically)
• Goat’s tend to worry too much about things that genuinely don’t matter
• The Cat should avoid the Rat. They aren’t enemy signs but they will never get along

Hello! Hope this ask finds you in good health.
I am a Dragon in Vietnamese astro, and was thinking of getting a dog but I read that Dragons shouldn't own Dogs?
May I know why is it harmful?
Thank you for your time and energy. Have a nice day! 🤍
it’s just best to avoid enemy animals. i personally don’t go anywhere near my enemy animal/animal products by my enemy animal to stay safe, but to each their own of course. here are some stories of ppl i’ve known who did and what happened to them:
story 1: one of my neighbors where i used to live was a dragon in vietnamese astrology and had a pitbull that she absolutely adored and it had never harmed anyone ever, it was treated well, it had no sign of illness causing it to lash out, etc. it ended up biting her ENTIRE ear off one day. it just got aggressive out of nowhere for absolutely no reason when she was laying in bed petting it. no one new was around or anything
story 2: my cousin who’s a rat in vietnamese astrology was obsessed with horseback riding for a while until a horse kicked her in the head and cracked her head open. she had to get surgery and has permanent damage to her brain that is irreversible. the rat is the enemy of the horse :/
story 3: this isn’t a huge thing, but my friend who’s a rooster is allergic to cats and breaks out into hives when he gets anywhere near them
story 4: my friend who’s a goat in vietnamese astrology has bad reactions to dairy (ox is their enemy sign and it’s close to a cow although not the same, animals close in relation can also matter). she goes into anaphylactic shock when consuming cow milk tho
story 5: my grandma is a snake in vietnamese astrology and has always had bad reactions when eating any pig products (pig is the snake’s enemy sign)
these are just some that came to mind, but the fact that i literally have so many more is crazy 😭 i suppose, it wouldn’t be horrible if u got a small dog, but it could still lead to bad things having them around in general
