Review #297: So, Peter Gabriel

I love me some Peter Gabriel. What a weirdo. Such a gravely sullen voice! You okay Pete? Red Rain is such a big serious introduction.

Of all of his work, “So” ends up being perhaps the most commercially viable? Or least weird? It’s got hints of his forthcoming focus on world music, which is cool. I love this record though, it’s totally unique and itself. No concept, no theme, just each individual song existing the way the artist thought it should and put together in a way that seemed to make sense. Guy was just out there doing it how he wanted and that is I suppose why he was too much for Genesis. I do often listen to some of his tracks not from this album and think “what was he on, and where do I get some?”. Stick on “Shock the Monkey”, listen to it really in depth. I mean really listen to it a good few times and see if you arrive in the same place. Incredible song — seriously, what the fuck. I digress, because it’s not on this album.

Let’s talk about Sledgehammer! I’m pretty sure the word bombastic was created for this song. The video has lived rent free in my mind since I was a teeny tiny child. It’s unforgettable! It’s so weird and gross and cool! What is up with this guy you know? Does he wanna hang out? I challenge anyone to listen to this song and not move their feet. It cannot be done. Also, Mr. Gravelly Sullen voice can reach some damn high notes! And sounds great with a choir! Look how many exclamation points I’m using! See also: Big Time.

For me it’s always been his vocals but the drums are pretty spectacular throughout — super interesting use of the cymbals and hi-hats. I mean but also then, I could say the brass, and the bass, and the this and the that and the everything. It’s just really fucking good. Actual criticism: the world was deprived of more collaboration between Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel, which was very thoughtless and rude of them.
