*they hate puzzles

*While I’m playing catch-up with the Dating Sim scripts I owe, I thought I’d share something I wrote up several months ago to explore RESETs, Papyrus’s death via Genocide route, and the skelebros’ backstory. It’s actually part of a roleplay post from way back when, where Frisk was struggling with control against Chara, which resulted in the timeline getting LOADed over and over to just before the Papyrus fight... while Sans watched from the sidelines.

*Angst warning.

In all of his fragmented memories from other timelines, Sans only saw happier times ahead, times where his SOUL was drawn to Frisk’s as he followed them throughout the Underground, always watching.. always making sure they were safe. And every time, they had always been so good, so full of Mercy, that he just knew they would never--

[ R E S E T ] And then Sans was hiding behind some trees in the woods, watching his brother stand across from the human they had discovered. A human coming into the Underground? That was hilarious! And Papyrus interacting with the human was pure gold. His brother was so cool, and Sans getting to participate in the japes alongside him had been a surprising amount of fun. The human had loved puzzles, had gone through all of them humoring Papyrus and easily figuring out the solutions. It was only because of this, and watching the human continually Spare every monster from the Ruins to Snowdin, that Sans trusted them across from his brother now. Papyrus was harmless; he would never actually kill anyone, human or not. And this human, so filled with kind words and gentle smiles, would never raise a hand to Papyrus, either. "ARE YOU OFFERING A HUG OF ACCEPTANCE? WOWIE, MY LESSONS ARE ALREADY WORKING!" Sans watched as the human approached, but something.. wasn't right. It felt like he was missing something important. * they hated puzzles. we couldn't get them to cooperate through a single one. "I, PAPYRUS, WELCOME YOU WITH OPEN ARMS!" * but that's not right.. no, they loved the puzzles. they even solved them so quickly that i think they may have seen them before.. if that's possible. The human was moving closer, and Sans felt.. conflicted, and then berated himself for that emotion. He was being stupid. He may not have known the human that long, but he was observant and an excellent judge of character. There was no reason-- And then Papyrus's body jerked suddenly, a sound much like a surprised gasp escaping him. In slow motion, his body faded away... crumbling to dust in the snow. Sans stopped. Everything stopped. Papyrus's skull continued to talk, but the words were lost on him. He took a shaky step forward before his legs gave way just outside the treeline where he'd be in view, and he crouched over on his hands and knees, hollow sockets staring blankly ahead. A pleasant breeze went by, leaving a trail of dust across his jacket. * w h y . . . ?

He couldn't be gone. He couldn't.

It wasn't possible.

Sans had watched over his brother since he was just a babybones. For as long as he could remember, it had only been the two of them. He had always tried his best to be a good big brother, to make certain that Papyrus was taken care of before his own needs were met. Thankfully, Sans may have been young back then, but he was clever. He always had some kind of quick money scheme (like the time he gave tours of the Capital City and made up bullshit facts), so he was able to keep his brother relatively well-fed and clothed, even if they had to bounce around from one place to the next as he came up with other scams.

It wasn't until he was able to secure a job in the Lab that their situation was able to become stable, and Sans had done everything in his power to make that possible. By then, Papyrus had nearly been as tall as him. They lived in Hotland for a while, then moved to the outskirts of Waterfall when Papyrus had become enamored with the soft glow of the foliage and the novelty of the Echo Flowers. Sans himself became drawn to the sparkling rocks embedded in the cavern's ceiling, and just like everyone else, he found himself wishing.

Wishing those were real stars.

But everything he had worked for crumbled overnight.

An experiment went too far.

His mentor was lost to the Void.

All attempts to retrieve him proved fruitless.

He moved Papyrus to Snowdin because the town was quaint and it was a chance for his brother's boisterous, Great personality to really shine. By now, Papyrus was fully grown and had a burning desire to join the Royal Guard, ever since he had found out how amazing ("UNDYE IS STRONG, COOL, AND LOVED BY ALL! I CAN ACHIEVE ALL OF THOSE THINGS, TOO! GETTING INTO THE GUARD SHOULD BE NO PROBLEM FOR SOMEONE AS GREAT AS ME!") its Captain was. Sans retained his job at the Lab to support his brother's endeavors, but any joy he had felt with his work had been snuffed out. What was once a passion became mundane, something bothersome. There were no answers to be found, no amazing results to be shared.

Another failed experiment.

And another.

Notes in his basement, blueprints, and a machine that he could never get to work again. Pictures and fragments of notes in his own hurried, cramped scrawl started appearing in the drawer shortly after, ones where he couldn't remember the faces of the monsters or ever writing the contents of the notes. It became clear that there was more going on, that what had meant to be their Salvation was their Undoing instead.

So, he quit.

Sans let his apathy take over and became fueled only by his love for his brother. Papyrus once again became his sole reason for going through the motions, and he took menial jobs and continued with his quick-gold schemes to pay the bills. There were times when he felt as if he had lived the same day over and over again.. and times when he remembered things before they happened. Then, there were the nightmares, the repetitious nightmares that he could never quite remember but gave him a general... uneasy feeling around flowers.

He tried to keep Papyrus away from Echo Flowers after that.

Despite all of this, everything he did was aimed at bolstering his brother's Greatness and generally trying to make sure he had fun, he had friends, he had everything he wanted. It was still pretty much the two of them; nothing else really mattered except Papyrus.

The scent of dust hit him as grit carried by the wind clogged his nasal cavity.

Nothing mattered now.

He couldn't be gone. He couldn't.

*they loved the puzzles. paps was so happy that a human finally got to use his puzzles. i've never seen him so excited.

Something was wrong. There was panic in his SOUL; he could feel it fluttering restlessly in against his ribs. His thoughts were momentarily disoriented, memories overlapping in a way that felt so wrong.

There was something glinting in the human's hand.

No.. He was wrong.

*they hated puzzles.

[ R E S E T ]

He knew something bad was going to happen.

Sans was hyperventilating just beyond the treeline. The fact that skeletons didn't have to breathe spoke volumes for this particular anxiety attack.

Clutching the front of his white T-shirt, his hand over his SOUL, he doubled over and tried not to vomit magic bile all over the snow. It took him a moment to try to recall why he was so upset, before a name was uttered between clenched teeth, his body tense and voice strained.

"papyrus.."

He lurched forward, his slippers having difficulty finding purchase in the powdered snow. His eyelights fell upon the sight of his brother's body just as it crumbled away, and this time, he finally heard his farewell speech.

"I STILL BELIEVE IN YOU! YOU CAN DO BETTER! EVEN IF YOU DON'T THINK SO!"

As the human retched into the snow, Sans clamped a skeletal hand over his mouth to bite back a wail.

[ R E S E T ]

*they hate puzzles.

He could never connect the dots fast enough to do anything.

Papyrus still believed in them.

Sans got a faint glimpse at a memory--or wishful thinking?--where he had once had the warmth of the sun on his bones and saw the human (*frisk. their name is frisk.) give him a sincere smile that caused such fucking HoPe to well up in his SOUL that he realized his world had expanded beyond just him and Papyrus. He had more to live for now. They had given him a future, and they were good, they were so good, and full of more Mercy than any monster he'd ever met.

Was it all a lie?

[ R E S E T ]

"kid..."

He was wearing the expression of someone who'd watched his own brother die five times. Five. The number of fingers on a human's hand.

Fingers that were curled around a knife.

He made it just past the treeline again before he collapsed onto his hands and knees. His magic prickled to the surface, and one eyelight expanded, casting a vibrant cyan on the pale snow. He should kill them. He should make them suffer.

*even when you ran away, there was a smile on your face.

Glimmering tears rolled down his zygomas, leaving little circular imprints in the snow below him. His fingers clenched into it, and once again, dust hit his face as a breeze swept by.

Could a murderer pretend to be a good person, if they really tried?

"stop.”

[ R E S E T ]

*they only pretended to like the puzzles.

*but they were so nice to papyrus.

Papyrus was dead.

He didn't even try to run forward this time. So many overlaps occurring so rapidly had kept the memory fresh in his mind. Over and over, they'd forced him to watch his brother die. Did they get some kind of sick pleasure out of knocking off his head? Out of breaking his complete trust, spitting on his utter Mercy?

He had once considered them one of his closest friends. They had gained his admiration, his trust, and even a portion of his heart. A little while longer, and they could have reached the same status as his brother--of someone that Sans would do anything for. He had already wanted to protect them, promise or no promise. He had already put his faith in them, and they had broken the Barrier, but..

If that was the case, then why were they still Underground?

And why was Frisk forcing him to watch this, over and over?

He waited, standing numbly in the trees. It was pointless to move; he was just going to end up right back where he started, but with one more nightmare. If this was his life--if this moment was stuck on loop for an eternity--then he would rather be dusted. But not even that was permanent now.

No, that would be too much of a Mercy.

What do you do when there’s not much to an AU? You make up your own stuff, ofc. And as is per usual when I make Character Designs, I make up a shit ton of lore too.

The ramblings under the cut, but what I’m really interested in, is what you guys think. Do you guys have any headcanons/ideas for this AU? Let me hear them! Before I get into the characters’ roles, here’s some general facts and backstory of their town:

- Basically, it’s Undertale meets Harvest Moon / Stardew Valley. Well, kinda. I at least used that approach for coming up for the jobs for the characters. You know, how there’s always a general store, a doctor, a smithy, etc.

- The usual story of a HM game is that you come to a town that’s way past its glory days and you, as the player/farmer, help them get back to that. The “backstory” of the town is that that already kinda happened. I’ll get into it more in the character description, but basically when Asgore was still mayor, the town got really popular. Then yadda yadda, a certain tragedy happened, two kids died, and the town suddenly got very bad publicity. There was a lot of stuff going on back then, bad reputation being spread and also a lot of law stuff, cos, you know, supposed child murder ‘n all, so Asgore made the decision to shut off the town to ppl from outside. This was in the interest of most monsters living there, because as fun as it is to have a lot of people coming there, most just wanted to live a quiet life. Not everyone was happy with that though, so many moved away from town and some others are trying to get the town back on its feet. But more on that later.

On to the characters:

I’m just gonna start with the skelebros, cos it’s their fault in the first place I got so invested.

Basically, they are what the player is in hm/sdv. They just showed up one day, took over the abandoned farmhouse and began their life there. The two came to town way after it was “closed” and since then a new mayor has opened the possibility for new residents to move in. Their farm helps the economy of the town a lot and the mayor, like usually in hm games, is trying to use that to make the town more known again. The skelebros aren’t really working towards that goal however.

So, now a bit more detail on them individually.

Papyrus:

- The design is mostly based on what’s “canon” in this au.

- He works mostly on the fields and is in charge of the crops. Their fields aren’t spectacularly big, but still big enough to plant a few dozen rows of veggies.

- Paps also helps out a lot in town when he has the time. He helps Asgore with his plants, he goes fishing with Undyne, helps Toriel carry crates around and so on. This is inspired by the part-time job mechanic in HM ToT.

- Unbelievably, in this AU Pap is not an absolutely awful cook. Since he helps out at Muffet’s and Grillby’s a lot, they tend to show him some tricks to cooking. Even though Pap’s not a big fan of the greasy or overly sweet cooking those two do, he picks up a lot.

Sans:

- Again, design mostly based on the “canon” look. Maybe a bit more baggy.

- This is finally an AU this dude gets to rest. Since there are no resets and he doesn’t have to see his bro die again and again, for once in his life, he’s not a sad ball of depression. He’s just a chill and lazy dude that loves to make puns. Though, since he’s not too experienced with the feelings of loss, helplessness or grieving, he still tends to hide behind puns and fakes smiles if he does feel bad.

- Sans is in charge of the animals on the farm. Papyrus begrudgingly gave him that role since Pap’s loud demeanour and hectic movements usually scare the animals. Sans’ relaxed attitude draws the animals to him naturally and even if Pap mostly finds him sleep against a tree, in a stack of hay or on one of the sheep, the animals are always fed, healthy and relaxed, so Sans seems to be doing his job.

- Sans always has a small chic sit inside his hoodie or hat. Is it always the same one? Who knows, maybe.

- Sans also, somehow, can produce eggs out of thin air. Grab into his hoodie pocket, in his pants pocket, in his hat, in his slipper, there’s suddenly always an egg there. On good days he can even make butter or cheese appear.

Gaster:

- He’s literally just a scarecrow in this. Though, if you ask any of the bros why they designed their scarecrow that way, they won’t have an answer.

Frisk&Toriel:

- Frisk is mostly based on what I wore myself as a kid in summer. Just a loose shirt with a cappy. Toriel basically has her ut gown, just with an apron on top.

- Frisk just appeared outside the “magical” forest one day. Napstablook and his cousin found them and brought them to Toriel, who has been taking care of them since.

- Toriel runs the general store in town, but also often takes care of the few kids that still live there.

- Frisk usually helps out in Toriels store, plays with the other kids or sits around at Asgore’s. They’re notorious for nabbing small snacks, mostly from Asgore’s plants. You’ll always find them munching on something.

- Frisk was in town before the skelebros. Since they’d moved in, Frisk often went to spy on their farm. After a small incident with angry chicken, Frisk got to know the two better and now they see them as something between brothers and uncles.

- But Frisk honestly gets along with everyone. Just like in UT, they’ve not only been adopted by Toriel but literally everyone.

- Toriel and Asgore’s relationship is not as bad as in the main game, since, you know, Asgore didn’t kill literal children, but there’s still tension between them. Back when Asriel and Chara died and the whole thing with the bad rep for the town began, Toriel felt betrayed by Asgore focusing more on the town than giving their deceased kids the grieving they deserved. They’re not divorced, but Toriel still moved out and said needed space to think. Now that Frisk is in the picture though, the both of them are slowly coming to even ground and may even be able to talk things out and clear up the uncertainty of their decisions.

Asgore:

-Asgore has his UT Ending / Deltarune clothes, just with a gardener’s belt.

- He’s the previous mayor of the town, but after all the crap that happened, he stepped down from the position. Now he has his own little shop and sells seeds, saplings, homegrown veggies and fertilizer. So, basically what e.g. the Marimba Farm is in HM AP

- His main customer is Papyrus and they’re on friendly terms. Asgore is worried about how much and how hard Pap works, so he often gives him a discount.

- Since his family’s past tragedy, Asgore is kind of nervous around kids. So, when he first met Frisk, he hoped they’d not visit him too often. But to his chagrin, Frisk took an instant liking to him and spends a lot of time at his shop (and steals eats the fresh grown veggies). Now, he’s really grateful for that, because for one, he loves Frisk as dearly as he had his own children, and also because now the tension and mistrust between him and Toriel seem to grow smaller day by day.

Undyne&Alphys:

- I gave Undyne a pretty basic fisher’s outfit. Alphys basically has Elli from HM’s outfit, just a bit more doctory stuff added. She still has her canon lab coat too.

- In essence, Undyne and Alphys have 2 completely different jobs. Alphys is the resident doctor and Undyne runs the fish market.

Two things. Yes, I know Alphys is more a mechanic than a doctor, she fits the aesthetic though, so she’s the doc now. And no, Undyne being a fisherwoman is not cannibalism, think of it more as a shark hunting smaller fish.

- The reason I lump them together is because they act as the local “smithy”. Alphys is still really tech savvy in this (I mean, Mettaton is still part of this AU), so she takes on most problems with electronics and stuff. For Undyne, I didn’t want to lose her Royal Guard’s Captain image, so she’s really good at handling tools (and weapons, but Al doesn’t let her make them anymore). So basically, if there’s a broken tool, you can be sure that either Undyne or Alphys can fix it.

- As for relationships, those two are still an item. Alphys is still really shy and a shut-off, but since Undyne and Pap become best friends, she gets to know the skelebros better. She and Sans especially get along well, since most of the time Undyne and Papyrus are let loose, they sit back and talk about science-y stuff. (no, Sans doesn’t have a background in science but he’s still into sci-fi)

- Alphys has a bit of a strained relationship with both Asgore and Mettaton.

Back when Chara and Asriel died, it was because of “illness” (maybe poisoning?). Alphys feels awful because with her back then limited knowledge on medicine she couldn’t help the two. Asgore doesn’t hold anything against her but Alphys can’t help but feel guilty.

Alphys still built Mettaton’s body in this one. The two had a really big disagreement, because Mettaton hated the fact the town was going to close, and he couldn’t understand how Alphys could feel otherwise, even more so endorse the idea.

Mettaton, Napstablook, Mad Dummy/Mew Mew:

- Napsta and Dummy are pretty self-explanatory, they got straw hats. Mettaton’s outfit is a bit of a joke cos it’s a play on “work at the top and party at the bottom”. The tie has two different sides, one with the yellow red pattern, the other completely red. His “top part” is the business part, because when he’s on tv or in the mayors’ office, you don’t usually see his feet. The bottom is his party/dance part, cos his dancing/entertainment channels mostly feature his legs.

- Mettaton, still a robot, Napstablook and Mad Dummy are all still cousins in this AU.

- Originally, they all lived and worked at the Blook Farm, the Animal Farm of this AU. Mettaton, however, despised that simple live and after befriending Alphys and her building him a body, he left the Farm to pursue bigger things.

- Mettaton runs the local tv network. From weather to game shows, he does it all. He also runs the tailor shop in town that sells his designer clothes and merchandise. After Asgore stepped down, Mettaton also took over the role of town’s mayor and now works towards making the place more known again. Not everybody is happy with him doing that though.

- One of those people is the Mad Dummy. He can’t stand people anyways and he always claims that history would just repeat itself.

- Since the whole family is made of ghosts, they have different dummies and scarecrows they can use to take care of the animals. To mock Mettaton and kinda get back at Alphys for giving MTT such an opportunity, Mad Dummy found the blueprints for the Mew Mew robot and now modelled one of their scarecrows after it.

- Napstablook isn’t fond of taking over obejcts like his cousins do, so he mostly takes care of the snails. Somehow, he can interact with them even when incorporeal.

Muffet&Grillby:

- The two of them run the Inn together. Muffet cooks in the daytime and makes desserts, Grillby manages the bar in the evening.

- The two still can’t really stand each other but working together like this benefits them both because their rivalry just spurs them on more.

- Even though Grillby is a patient person, somehow Muffet is the only person who riles him up enough to retaliate. (Well, maybe except for Sans, he’s a strong second).

So, basically everything between those two is a challenge in some way. Even if Papyrus doesn’t notice, even his cooking lessons are a challenge for them.

- Even though they’re constantly bickering, after working together for so many years, there’s a strange level of respect and trust between them. Even if back when they first started this business, they’d pour salt into an already open wound, nowadays they’d know better and just take a step back from the other or even comfort the other (on very rare occasions only).

Asriel&Chara:

- They be dead. Kinda.

Some Characters that’d live in that town too but that I haven’t made designs for:

- Gerson is the original smithy of the town. He’d grown up in a family of smiths, but he’d always had an appreciation for the sea. That’s why, when the town became more deserted and Undyne had a good enough skill level as smith, he took up the Captains hat and now mostly spends his days out on sea. He also ferries people to places if they need him to. Oh, and just like in canon, Undyne learned most of her skills from him.

- Burgerpants is a poor dude Mettaton basically kidnapped when he was trying to get fame in the city. Now Burgerpants works wherever MTT needs him to, be that as cameraman for the tv shows, cashier in his tailor shop or his slave secretary in the mayor’s office.

- MK is Frisk’s best kid friend. MK’s parents are in charge of shipping the goods out of town and paying the individual people. MK’s the one that usually collects the goods at the end of the day.

- Other than that, there are only a few people in town. I’d imagine the older folks or the really young families stayed in town after it was closed. I think the librarby dude would still run the library. Some Snowdin residents like the stone family or the dogs also might still live there.

do you have any stories/plans for the babybones swap skele bros? just curious cause im an absolute enthusiast for babybones content and wondering if they had some backstory for when theyre young

unfortunately not really! I've never had any specific headcanons about the skelebros' history, and with even just the vague possibility of the UT skelebros' backstories tying into Deltarune I'm only more reluctant to touch on that topic. granted even if that turns out to be true in years to come I probably still wouldn't drastically change Swap MH to match, but it's just a weird empty gap I'm not super interested in filling ahah

that said I'd love to draw baby bones swap bros sometime!! the mental image of a tiny Neptune holding his even tinier lil bro is too cute not to :'>

Introduction to Salem (my deltarune oc)

because i really wanna post about her hsdgjshbdsfhj

info under the cut bc this is gonna be long as FUCK I have a lot to say about my daughter...please read it tho

first things first, her name is Salem and I first made her on my second run of deltarune when I decided to name my vessel properly (on my first run i made the vessel’s name my own since the instructions confused me a tad, haha.)

this is what she looks like in-game. here’s a sprite recreation of the above sprite cuz its kinda unclear (plus a pixel vers)

I didn’t flesh her out until may 2020 though, and since then she’s gone through all sortsa development. the first thing I did was try to make her design stand out from being a basic vessel while still keeping true to the nature of it, if that makes sense.

this is my first ever drawings of her- some minor things have changed as i’ve drawn her. here’s her current design!

as well as her sprite (plus the pixel vers)

she has a dark world form and a “beta” design (aka her in-game design just with a face) but I've shown enough designs for now.

Her backstory is that, after being discarded, she was saved and brought to life by Gaster. He acts as her father figure (she literally calls him father, since in a way he is bc bringing her to life and all that) and she holds him in very high regard. They live together in the void, however Salem can leave and I’m going to explain why in a bit.

Her purpose as a vessel is to house the player’s soul. That purpose was taken from her at the beginning of the game as we all know, and she’s determined to get it back by any means necessary. How she does this is she basically goes down to hometown and/or the dark world to antagonize/attack Kris to get the soul out of them. She hates them for this reason.

Of course, she’s more like a saturday morning cartoon villain than an actual threat to them. She tries her hardest but can never really get their soul. She keeps trying though. The only thing that could divert her from attempting to fulfill her purpose would have to be a genuine change of heart.

Personalitywise, She’s actually very proper and polite to people she’s not actively trying to steal the soul of. Gaster raised her with proper manners! Despite this, she’s also very sassy and not afraid to speak her mind. Also shes not above saying swear words because I think its funny lmao

Her powers are as follows:

Teleportation - Allows her to get to and from the void. she can teleport to places she knows, but not people, and she can teleport small items with her if she’s holding them but not other people, hence why Gaster can’t use her to escape.

Hovering - Salem can hover a few feet off the ground for a limited amount of time. It’s not exactly flight, since it’s loosely derived from Gaster’s ability to control his detached hands (technically a form of hovering). It’s more just so she can look intimidating and cool. Originally, she didn’t have this, but one day I sprite edited a pose that looked like she was hovering and decided it would be cool lmao

Gaster Blasters- Since they’re named after her dad, I figured I’d give them to her. However, I’ve been debating recently on whether to keep them or not, since I don’t want her being too similar to Sans power-wise and he’s the only place in the game we see them. It’s iffy for now, so we’ll see.

Fun facts!

She has a wrench she uses as her main weapon. I tend to forget this fact, but it’s very important. (If I do get rid of the blaster power, she’d use this as primarily, since right now she prefers to use the blasters as a ranged attack. That said she does love to bonk people w the wrench, namely Kris she hits them with it a lot)

Physically, she is the same age as the fun gang (Since I headcanon Kris, Susie, and Ralsei to be 17, she would be 17 as well, however if you headcanon them to be younger she’s essentially just aged to match them. At the very least her and Kris are always physically the same age.) Mentally, though, it’s kinda complicated. She’s as smart as her physical age in the sense she’s able to use logic and wit, however her knowledge of the world is less than a toddlers. If you asked her what something normal like, say, grass was, she would not know. She would be confused as fuck. She could best someone at chess but the second you ask her what a movie theatre is she becomes all questions

She’s naturally very curious. Maybe because she has so little knowledge of the world or maybe because she was raised by Gaster to have a scientific mind, but she just wants to know EVERYTHING about the world around her. When she’s not focused on antagonizing Kris and their friends all the time, she’s usually out exploring and studying things, trying to expand her knowledge.

Gaster forgot if he taught her how to read and write or not and at this point he’s too afraid to find out.

In truth, Gaster’s better at being a scientist than a dad. He tries to act fatherly towards Salem but most of the time ends up treating her more like a lab assistant. She doesn’t mind as long as he pays attention to her, but it’s still not exactly good for her development.

I headcanon Gaster is ambiguously related to the skelebros, so by extension Salem is related to them as well. He’s told her to respect them. (She gets along with Papyrus, but Sans gets on her nerves sometimes.)

For the ask meme: What is the one fic that got away?

Oooh... Well uh, depending on how you interpret the question...

If you mean “got away” as in “bolted away from me and took me along for the ride,” both A Few Repairs and Neither Can You got way more wild on me than I expected. I’d had a rough outline planned out for AFR, but then a reviewer was like “ohhh I’m imagining THIS happening” and I was like “...wow that’s way better than my original idea” so I dumped my outline and wrote that idea instead, which wound up being a lot more wild and dramatic and a lot better for the whole story in general.

NCY, to be honest, I had started with little idea of where it would go--IIRC I had started with the idea of “what if Héctor bumps into Ernesto again and Ernesto decides to get back at him” and started writing with no real plans of posting it. But as I got further I got to liking it and realizing what I wanted out of the story, I thought, well, maybe I should post it, though I didn’t expect it to be as... long as it was. Also plot changes kept happening as I went because Héctor and Dante did not cooperate with me and both jumped out a window on separate occasions. %| also Miguel was supposed to be way more involved in the story but that didn’t happen, and it was probably for the better that way.

But if the question means “the one that got away” as in a fic I never finished or lost... I have a lot of unfinished fics sitting in my docs and drafts and whatnot. Some of them I do still plan on going back to, but man I have an entire outline for an Undertale fic about Sans’, Papyrus’, and Gaster’s backstory. I put a lot of work into fleshing out the outline to make sure it would be a good story, because I have never seen a backstory fic or comic that was anything close to my personal headcanon (with Gaster being unrelated to the skelebros and also not being the mysteryman, and also with Sans not being fanon!Sans who is all powerful and perfect brother and also a genius. and also Papyrus who is not fanon!Papyrus and who is also actively involved in the plot rather than an angst prop for Sans). So uhhh... yeah I have a detailed summary/outline for the whole fic, but I... never... actually.... got around to writing it--after pouring so much effort into getting it together I kinda lost steam, and it didn’t help that I was kindof burnt out on that fandom. Sorta wonder if I over-planned it. Maybe I’ll come back to this one someday, but I dunno.

Do you headcanon only Underswap!Muffet to be Mama!Muffet? Or are there other Muffets besides her that gets to be Mama!Muffet?

Originally, US Muffet wasn’t a “mama” because I just didn’t see any of the Muffets I created taking care of children unless they died during childhood which wouldn’t make a long enough story (aka long enough to meet chara/frisk).

I still do believe the Muffets wouldn’t make a good parent/ circumstances surrounding them would lead the skelebros to an early grave. Mama Muffet au is basically a comedic “what-if” story I created after some of my mutuals/followers introduced me to the idea.

That is except Underswap. The more I thought about it, I was actually able to write a good outline for their respective backstories so she became what she was now.

I’m actually planning on creating a mini-comic for my Muffets to flesh out their characters a bit more - the first being SF Muffet. These are some concept designs for her younger days:

So what's up with this blog?

This is @joliemariella's undertale specific sideblog! Here I reblog neat Undertale related content I've seen, post Undertale content of my own in the form of fanart and fanfics, and also answer asks for both myself and the main characters from any of my UT fics. Q is the most popular of course, but you can read more about him further down.

Where can we read your fanfics?

Over here on my Ao3 is generally the best bet! I do recommend following me here as well, though! Not only will I post when I update, but sometimes I'll also do sneak peeks, or even tumblr exclusive stuff!

Where can we see your fanart?

Well I have a gallery over on DA, but here on tumblr is a good place too. I tend to only post finished product over on DA, but if you check the jolie arts tag here on my tumblr, you can see my sketches and various silly drawings I don't post anywhere else.

Who all can we send in asks for?

Myself, obviously, but also any of the main characters from any of my fanfics! Just don't expect reaction images for all of them, lol. Any interactions you have with these characters (and the fact that they're answering asks at all) are not canon, but any information they give you IS. Unless they're lying, which some of them are more prone to than others, heh. I'll drop a hint that they're not being entirely truthful if that is the case, though.

The only exception here is my monstersona, Jo! If you're looking to send her an ask, please send it to @ask-sfhaven instead of here!

I sent in an ask but you haven’t answered it, what’s up?!

My ask count for this blog tends to hover right around 100 no matter how many I answer, and I’m generally pretty good about doing at least a handful every day. That said, I will not answer every ask sent in. I definitely pare them down for the sake of my sanity. Sometimes they’re just silly and not really worth the time. Sometimes they’re boring and/or Q’s already received that exact question a bunch already. Other times they were only really pertinent in the wake of another ask that got answered, and if I wasn’t able to get to it in a timely manner then I’m not going to because the context is now lost. I’ll also sometimes save some asks for later because they just require a little more thought to answer than I’m up to putting into it at the moment. Also, if you send in several around the same time, then I’m not going to just sit and answer all yours in a row, I’ll spread them out over days or weeks.

Side note, questions about the actual mechanics of how Q or his world work are almost guaranteed to get answered eventually because that was kinda the entire point of opening asks for him in the first place, heh.

Do you take prompts, suggestions, or requests?

Nope! If you want to share your headcanons or something that's cool, and I might weigh in on them, but that's as far as I'll go.

Can we do fanart of Q (or any of your other AUs/Fics)?

I freaking love fanart okay, so yeah, have at it, man! Just make sure to tag me or send me a link and I’ll totally reblog it! If you don’t see me reblog it or at least comment on it within 24 hours try sending a link directly to me via chat because I probably just missed your tag or Tumblr straight up ate it.

Can we write fanfic about/involving Q (or any of your other AUs/Fics)?

Please do NOT do this. While I appreciate the gesture, fanfic of my fics/characters is not something that I enjoy receiving from strangers. There are a couple of people on my extremely short list of individuals I’m ok with writing Q or my other AUs, and trust me, I’ll have straight up told you if you’re on that list.

Q FAQ

Who the hell is this 'Q' and why is he such a goddamn troll?

Q is Quarantine Sans from my Undertale AU, Machinatale, which in turn is the foundation for my fanfic 'Skeleton ex Machina'. SeM is a sister fic to @tyranttortoise amazing fic, "Skeleton Squatters and the Landlady". The very brief backstory for him can be read here. As for why he's a troll, well, lets just say life and the happenings there in have left him a bit salty with a low tolerance for bullshit.

Who else is in this world of Q's?

Everyone that made an appearance in the Undertale game with the exception of Frisk and Chara (For the why of that, read here)! There are a total of 167 souls in Q's world.

Why only 167?

As far as he's been able to discover, that was the total number of characters and killable enemies within the original game. Unfortunately, whatever happened that gave them all life has not given them the ability to create life in turn, or age. It's a phenomenon that Q is investing a great deal of time in hopes of one day giving his people the ability to procreate, and their few existing children the ability to grow up, but it's a puzzle he's yet to crack.

Just how much control does Q have over his world?

It's nigh infinite as far as he can tell, beyond his inability to create new sentience. He's the only system admin so he's able to change anything about the system. There are facets of the citizens souls that he is not able to change, however, no matter how hard he tries. Papyrus still can't cook well, for one, no matter how many cooking programs he installs. Any of the main 'sprited' characters also have trouble maintaining any sort of shift in their appearance they adopt. Unless they pay close attention to it, the programming likes to shift back to their default appearance. Any of the citizens that came from 'random encounter enemies', on the other hand, are able to maintain such changes indefinitely.

Do the monsters in Q's world have souls?

They do! They're not exactly like regular monster souls, however, since they don't technically have magic in Q's world. Read his explanation on it here, or in chapter 5 of ‘Skeleton ex Machina’!

What happened to the seven human souls?

They still exist within Q's world! Read his explanation here.

What happened to the Amalgamates?

They also still exist! A few of them have actually been saved and returned to 'normal', though the bulk of them still exist as they appeared in game. You can read more about them in chapter 2 of ‘Skeleton ex Machina’.

Wait, so why does Q talk like he's already with the Landlady when answering some asks, and like he's still pursuing her in others?

Due to the nature of this blog, Q is answering most of them from the 'present', e.g. from whatever the latest point in ‘Skeleton ex Machina’ and ‘Skeleton Squatters and the Landlady’ is. Sometimes, however, depending on the ask, he's answering from the 'future', e.g. from after the end of Skeleton Squatters and the Landlady in the timeline where he's the one that ends up with the Landlady. (For those of you that don't know, Tyrant_Tortoise is planning to write an ending for each of the main skelebros where they're the one that ends up with Lady, Q included. That way all the readers wind up happy XD).

So who's Grim?

ONLY HIS BFF BRO. Grim was created by my sister, @nighttimepixels, and you can find out more about him over on @skeletonsgrim! He's the kinkiestsweetest skeleton you'll ever meet! He and Q meet in the 'future' after Q's already settled down with the Landlady and put a ring on it cuz he liked it so much and they quickly became best friends because Q is literally one of the only people on the entire planet who can actually see Grim. For all the particulars on THAT, check out @skeletonsgrim, lol. They're best bros and work together on crazy science projects in Q's private lab.
