Resonant Visions 5 Shiva Feshareki: NEW FORMS (2019) Artwork by Helena Hamilton Reviewed format: Digital Album on RESIST Welcome to the new review in the Resonant Visions series, in which today I've got for you a recently released new album. This is Shiva Feshareki's album NEW FORMS, released on February 22 of this year on RESIST. What attracted me to the cover artwork of this album was the strong abstract visual composition, which is both closely resembling the both the sound and structures of the compositions on this album as well as forming a great visual inspiration for listeners browsing for new music with its structure-like stark black and white imagery which is very recognizable. The artwork was created by Helena Hamilton, an Irish audiovisual artist who also creates her own visual and aural art pieces, she's deinfitely a great match for Feshareki's abstract, minimalist but also often quite Techno influenced Turntable Music and an artist whose work is also definitely worth checking out. Now, going back to the album cover, if I analyze the seperate elements, the element that pops out most prominently at first is the wide diagonal bar at the top. It forms a strong contrast with the thin stripes and other shapes and combined with the rectangular spiral shape in the middle adds depth to the visual composition. The round and rectangular edges on the left and right side in the composition give it an almost "animated" contour. Indeed, the album cover does represent the music contained within NEW FORMS rather well, as I interpreted it, the evolving and everchanging vinyl loops are represented by the repetition of stripes as well as the rectangular spiral, with the round and rectangular edges representing droning hypnotic repeating patterns within the music, with the sharp rectangular edge mimicing the harsher scratchy moments within the music. All in all, the cover artwork is a rather accurate and fitting visual compilation representing the music of NEW FORMS with all the sonic elements brought together imagined through abstract shapes and additionally, the repetition visually also perfectly resembles the aural "structures" Feshareki has created on NEW FORMS. Before I go into the music, as always, I'll mention some details about the contains of this Digital version. You get the album cover in great (3663x3663p) resolution, as well as the 8 album tracks in lossless audio (depending on your preferred option). Now, the audio resolution varies a bit from track to track in the download, so I'll list them for your reference. Track 1 - 16-bit/44.1kHz CD quality audio. Track 2 - 24-bit/44.1kHz high resolution audio. Tracks 3, 4, 5 and 6 - 16-bit/44.1kHz CD quality audio. Track 7 - 24-bit/48kHz high resolution audio. Track 8 - 16-bit/44.1kHz CD quality. NEW FORMS' tracklist is as much an intriguing tapestry of pieces as the music itself, including not only full length compositions by Shiva Feshareki but also jingles and in this Digital version is expanded with 3 additional tracks compared to the vinyl version (5 tracks) including the extended Composition No. 1 and 2 (digital edit). The flow of the tracklist is smooth however and the variation in the music is kept within a good coherent style Feshareki has created which varies from Plunderphonics style loops (which also often include the scracthes or effects she performs) to newly constructed rhythms created out of sampled grooves or other "mechanical" sounding parts of vinyl she samples to longer building hypnotic minimalist structures of sound that keep evolving into new directions. The first track NEW FORMS Jingle 1 is a long form jingle in which Shiva Feshareki uses a voice recording of herself introducing the NEW FORMS NTS show (and in this case, the album as well) laid over warped, scratched, and pitch manipulated looped music samples. The music samples are manipulated in an abstracted Plunderphonics kind of manner, rapidly grabbing bits of sound from these vinyl recordings and mixing and combining with eachother to create new structures of "liquified" often mechanical sound. But besides the Plunderphonics style you can hear in this piece, Feshareki also goes further than that in this short composition by also quickly progressing from one loop to another and also adding unpredictable additional manipulations that literally jump out of the mixture, like spiky sonic psychedelic warbles. It does add a bit of humour to the piece in my opinion, as these touches add a liveliness to the music that keeps it from become clinical or systematic sounding glitching. Feshareki also uses a delay effect to quickly fade out layers of sound loops, which adds a great depth to the mix of the piece and the delays in themselves also add additional swirls over sound over the intensely repeating, almost Industrial loops of musical sound. On Composition No. 1 and 2 (vinyl edit) Feshareki moves in another direction. With a mysterious synth sweeping synth drone and tumbling orchestral music samples, the piece recalls 80's cassette culture like experimentation with Sound Collage, brought to 2019 with a more hi-fi production but also with touches of Contemporary (Classical) Music within it. Composition No.1 takes up most of the first half of this track, an intriguing composition in which collaged samples of a heavily percussive orchestral music piece are combined with mysterious synth sweeps that form a curious juxtaposition. The music feels both close and far away and the Orchestral music sample collage makes me think of futurism which is further detailed with the synth sweep sounding like the filtered sound of some kind of machinery. The whole mixture and composition feels like looking at memories of an Industrial past, in which the tubular bells, and stabs of staccato strings symbolize the hard labour the workers in the factories would do. Composition No. 2 which takes up the second half of this track is an intense climax of constantly rising scales performed on piano, quickly creating a waving spectral sensation within the cloud of diffuse frequencies generated by the sound of the piano. This definitely also refers back to the Industrial aspect I mentioned, as it exaggerates the mechincal aspect and metallic resonances of the piano strings quite a lot. Very immersive and rich sonic textures in here. Then we have Composition No. 3 in which Feshareki again uses vinyl samples of orchestral music. This is the piece in which the Techno influences in Feshareki's music become quite apparent. Similar to NEW FORMS Jingle 1, we have a lot of scratching and pitch manipulation in the sample loops but there's also a more continuous focus on repetitive but also quickly changing rhythmic sonic patterns. These often can be synced in a 4x4 tempo, which gives the music its Techno kind of vibe. Feshareki very cleverly both manipulates the spectral sonic contents of the music samples, morphing them to sound like squelchy synths while she creates glitchy percussion accents (sometimes also using the percussion within the samples) with the vinyl and zero crossing point ticks and short transients in the samples that create short "beats and by at times using longer samples that play for some time adds little breaks in between the rhythmic patterns to progress the evolution of the composition further. Feshareki's good feel for both rhythm and spectral contents while creating her compositions definitely helped a lot making these pieces all a lot of fun to listen to as well and her well selected sequencing of the loops adds to the strength of her music. NEW FORMS Jingle 3 is a short bumper like version of the NEW FORMS jingle, which adds some fun warbled scratch variations to the mixture. V-A-C Moscow follows which is in my opinion one of the best pieces on this album. Within its 12:24 length there are a lot of musical events happening. Some key events in this composition is Feshareki's radically rebuilding of ravey Techno tracks in which she combines burst of sharp Techno bass with funky Disco samples, like a futurist version of Techno in which Deconstructed Club elements are the base of a cubist type of musical structure and her excellent loops of various percussion and sound effect sounds create cinematic alien art pieces which seem to have been grown in a lab by a professor who loves Drill & Bass music. Indeed, there's a lot happening in this piece and out of all these sampled elements Feshareki succeeds to create quite a memorable musical journey. Evolution Loop (digital only) is a track that's fully based around drum breaks and percussion loops, sounding like a turntablist's version of Jungle, but without the additional basslines. The drum only approach works however as the continuously changing jumpy drumloops (which also feature Eastern percussion) bring out all the seperate drum elements within them as Feshareki allows you to single out nuances withim them through clever repetition and sonic manipulation. Amina (digital only) is a shorter piece in which both the Jungle and Drill & Bass influences are even more apparent as Feshareki juxtaposes collaged female vocal samples, galopping drum breaks and quirky synths to create a track that has a light hearted but also quirky ravey sound to it and keeps surprising with new details and additional added layers of samples added, very nice. Composition No. 1 and 2 (digital edit) is an extended version of this track which is quite a bit louder than the vinyl edit (in which the much brighter EQ'ed high end reveals that the synth drone is also taken from vinyl) and the ever ascending piano scales go on for quite a bit longer creating an even more hypnotizing effect. This edit also features a short break with additional orchestral music samples that create a great spectral contrast within the piece with their more spiky tonal character and make the ending even more intense. A great final track of NEW FORMS. NEW FORMS by Shiva Feshareki is a very exciting album of Turntable based music, spectral and rhythmic structures that within its tracklist flows like a collage of its own and is filled with enjoyable Techno, Jungle and Drill & Bass influenced original approaches to creating music using turntables but also contains music freely moving in the direction of Contemporary music compositions and Plunderphonic collages. Combined with Helena Hamilton's excellent cover artwork visualizing the music within this album is recommended to anyone looking for new innovative Turntable Music, Techno influenced sound collages but also fans of Deconstructed Club Music and experimental sample manipulation based music. From Daphne Oram’s unrealised electronic manipulations to Grand Wizard Theodore, artists and musicians have constantly found new frontiers for turntables and the playback of recorded music. Spanning movements at the interface of art and music from surrealism, Bauhaus, and Fluxus, to hip-hop, house, and techno, the use of the turntable as an instrument has enabled artists to explore dialogues between past and present, found and original sounds, and live and recorded performance. The film follows eight contemporary sound artists and musicians who are pushing the boundaries of the instrument today. The director Sam Campbell discovers musicians like Haroon Mirza and Graham Dunning, Shiva Feshareki, Janek Schaefer and more, uncovering the extraordinary technologies and DIY innovations that help these artists push their turntables to the limit. Title: Contemporary Activity Research/ Significant Current Activity in My Field.
I found Shiva’s work to very to be really interesting and fun to watch. What makes her work really captivating  is the fact that she  makes experimental compositions live on stage on stage in front. The sounds shes creates are very abstract and nothing like ever heard. She has this great talent of fusing sonic sampling, contemporary club, dance and classical all on her turntable; which is also accompanied by interesting digital visuals which change as the sounds evolve. She uses the sounds the music to create sonic manipulations as she tries to re-imagine, she does this by experimenting with sound with space and perspective. I really admire that she has built her own techniques and is constantly trying to deconstruct a variety of sounds from club, dance, and drone into new forms and perspectives, using nothing other than the original vinyl material. I think music is definitely part of digital media because of how we can use technology to create sounds we’ve never heard before. These sounds can be also accompanied by interesting visuals that can tell stories of conjure up unique and varied emotions for visitors.
