it's so heartbreaking how in the first season shiv is pretending so hard that she's uninterested in being a part of the company and that she has her OWN Good Liberal Agenda and her OWN desires and beliefs and her OWN ways to get power and success and no tom don't worry I don't even want it!!! ofc she wants it more than anything in the world but she knows that to express desire is to be vulnerable to humiliation. but then that OLD CUNT coaxes her out of her shell and makes her believe she has a chance only to humiliate her over and over again and make her entire life about him because he can't stand for any of his kids not to be obsessed with him. roman being the one to always make offensive jokes and yet never making a single one about shiv’s weight gain until he finds out that it’s because she’s pregnant and not for other reasons, especially given the siblings’ history with disordered eating, is so characteristic of the way they care for each other, not by checking in and all the usual stuff but simply by never crossing a line. they always know when to stop and when they do accidentally cross that line, they always apologize or regret it. it also just ties in really beautifully with the complexity of the food motif in that season, shiv being the only one we actually see eating a few times, and again, roman never making a single comment.

the irony and due justice of Logan's death happening so .... unceremoniously?? like he doesn't go out on a bang?? he doesn't die after some power play, some business deal, an argument with his kids. he dies essentially alone, in a bathroom, after choosing to not attend his first born's wedding and also after sending Roman to do his dirty work of firing Gerri. it's so abrupt and sudden and random and perfect and the audience is just as in shambles as the kids because we aren't there with Logan up in that plane, we don't know what's going on, and we don't know what's going to happen next. and the heartbreak of it all, the kids are still heartbroken for their father who has inflicted so much harm on them.

Ok but the accumulation of emotional stress Shiv endured just to fall down the only stair in the house in front of everyone—directly after being humiliated both privately and publicly by both brothers and everyone that respected her father—she just wants to grieve and people are celebrating and she’s a little girl alone in a room full of people with smiles stuck to their faces.

Roman falling AGAIN for Logan’s words, Kieran saying “it’s like the sunshine’s on him” oh my god I’m ill. IT’S ABOUT THE CYCLE OF ABUSE. IT’S ABOUT THE CYCLE OF ABUSE.
