I noticed in Dungeon Meshi in the anime that Kabru seems less desperate than in the manga. He is drunk, screaming, and crying over an autistic man who doesn't even know he exists. It isn't a cute little infatuation—Kabru is OBSESSED. Even Laios's clueless as$ can tell he wants something more than just being 'friends.'

"- Shown to have been uncomfortable with male gender roles since childhood, sensitive & feminine to the point that the girls she was friends with poked fun of her about it, and her governess literally terrorized her into giving up her interests in cute bugs so she could spend more time training to fight (she was not enthusiastic.) - The most repressed and shy person to ever live, constantly forcing down all her own desires and interests just to live up to family + societal expectations... - But the first time she expresses any real wants of her own as an adult is when she meets a girl with huge transfem vibes (Falin) and develops a huge unrequited crush she has no idea how to deal with non-awkwardly (which in turn has led an insane small number of fans to treat her like a creep for just having a crush on a girl despite being consistently respectful, considerate, and not at all pushy?? even her haters must subconsciously know she's trans, that's how they know to be transmisogynistic lmao) - Her single attempted friendship with a man was a whole mess because they couldn't relate to or understand each other at all (mostly for cultural reasons but lbr the fact that she has no genuine interest in traditionally masculine subjects and the man in question very much did had to have been part of it), but seems to have a substantially easier time communicating & getting along with women whether or not they're from the same cultural background (her best & seemingly only close childhood friend, Hien, was a girl, and she has no problem getting along with even more brash, blunt women from sharply different cultures like Namari) - Her entire character arc is about how she needs to learn to stop putting herself under insane, unhealthy pressure to live up to family & societal expectations, repressing and rejecting anything "weird" in the process, and should learn to express & advocate for her own feelings and wants instead. Give Her Estrogen it would be narratively sooo fitting & coherent I believe this in my heart - Vibes. There's just something so transfem about getting your first crush at 25 because it's the first time you met another girl who also thinks bugs/crustaceans/etc are cute and nice actually" - Anonymous

Me: I don't know what to do with Veronica's character in post s8 au, I don't want her to be Just Lance's sister and Kuron's friend with Pidge's storyline slapped on her, but also I'm not really sure about her character. Sure there's the whole lying to her family thing but I don't think that's enough?

Brain: ok so what if Veronica started out as trying to look for what was Lance upto but she ends up being so obsessed with finding the truth that not only she repeatedly puts herself in harms way but also the original goal falls on wayside.

This could be her way of dealing with trauma which is getting engrossed in the Mission and a problem to fix while suppressing her grief and refusing to actually acknowledge her problems and her own emotions a foil to Kuron's arc that is him being literally driven by emotions. She's angry at Lance for leaving without a word and angry at her family for their clinginess, however she keeps it to herself and just avoid them pretending everything is fine and normal

Also a foil to Lance who started as trying to figure out what was going on but as soon as he realized that 1) Allura and Kuron are still sorta alive 2) he can bring them back, he got obsessed with it consequences by damned.

Plus through her we can actually explore how quintessence actually effects and changes humans rather than become aware of the end result

Also there's something a character who is obsessed with truth but is also such a frequent liar

also to be clear i'm rbing a lot of posts abt toshiro not bcz i hate laios or anything in fact i love laios and i DO genuinely feel for him that shit sucks when people have problems with you but don't communicate them until they reach a tipping point where they'll explode and say hurtful things. it hits even more because laios is so clearly autistic

however i do think people are wayyy too eager to antagonize shiro and are even making shit up just to make him seem worse?? like for one he wasn't pretending to be nice to laios just to score falin nor did he ever seem "entitled" to falin's answer to his proposal like some people paint him as. you can hate a character without making shit up about them

I would love to add that Mr. Peepeepoopoo Man (Shuro) is punchable even if he is a sad wet meow meow. I feel second hand trauma for Laois cause this has happened to me a few times and it boggles the mind. Sry you didn't want to tell anyone how you felt unless you wanted to get your peepee near them. Sry that Laois being open with you is a burden because everyone should read your very smart and good thoughts. I want to crush him under my Crocs :(

He does wear depression very well though so he was one redeeming quality.

I'm 7 episodes into Dungeon Meshi because y'all couldn't stop posting about the most aggressively autistic (positive ❤️) man that I've ever laid my scrungly little eyes upon. Who decided the best rep I've ever seen would be a golden retriever man with a special interest that goes so hard you don't even mind it's crossed over into fetish territory? If I said half the shit he's said I would be in special jail, but he's just saying the things?! ALSO ALSO ALSO the quiet autisitc-coded AF way he's grieving his sister and trying to maintain hope is just 👏👏👏👏 and the fact his party knows he has empathy is managing in his own way 👏👏👏👏. Friendship points out the ass. That little scene where he's like lmao guys we wouldn't be eating this if Falin didn't McFrickin die amirite? And they are like...no bub. BUT they treat it like anyone saying something kinda off base. Because they KNOW he doesn't mean it bad AND they respect him enough to make it clear that it was bad. you know? That autistic feeling of wondering when/if you said something offensive? And this is like the healthiest way for a friend to deal with that w/o blindsiding the autistic person?

Maybe it's the fact that I have literally no clue if the author herself is neurodivergent, knows people that are, or did this intentionally - but I really like when creators just stumble into good characterization of autistic people. It's not an effort or an intrusion it's who the character is and it's baked into the story naturally :) feels good man, feels good.

This is the last thing... i will never post about ship discourse in dunmeshi from this point forward. But i needed to get this off of my chest.

Stop blaming fandom wide issues on ppl who like ships you don't like.

If you see a labru shipper call mithrun a burden and a dog, it's not because they like labru. It's because they're albeist.

If you see a kabumisu shipper push kabru to the backburner in favor of centering a white character, it's not because of kabumisu, it's because they're racist.

If a farcille shipper treats Toshiro like hes a disgusting predatory perv who Falin hates, it's not because they like farcille. It's because they're racist.

Ive seen shippers from all groups treat Kabru like he's a "sociopathic horrible person" (real words from dunmeshi fans). Ive seen Labru shippers admit that they only like labru so they treat Kabru like a sex object. Ive seen him be bastardized as "downbad" and horny 24/7 from both labru and kabumisu shippers, completely ignoring the intricacies of why he acts the way he does around Laios and Mithrun and instead dumbing it down to sex.

Ive seen yall all act funny about Shiro. Making him out to be a despicable person bc he said something bad while starving and tired. Calling him shallow for liking Falin as if they weren't literally friends. Acting like a guy in like, the fucking middle ages immediately going to proposal rather than dating is some horrible shocking thing for that time period. Villainizing him for traits that are present in pretty much every character as well.

None of these problems are limited to specific ships. Racism and albeism is a huge problem in this fandom and im gonna need yall to get that in ur heads instead of starting stupid shit. And just bc a shipper does something dumb and petty like getting mad when two characters from the ship they don't like are together, it doesn't mean that entire ship is the issue. Every fandom has stupid ppl who take shit too seriously. Some ppl who like your ship are bound to be like that too. Shut up pls omg

A foil is used to highlight the differences in the protagonists to the other character. More often than not, they are viewed as opposite, but that isn’t necessarily true. It’s to mirror complexities of the protagonist, making their traits more pronounced and their story more compelling.

The reason why it’s more Delgal is if you look at the entire journey Laios is on is to solve Delgal’s problems despite Laios running away from his own problems. This is highlighted more in the fact that Laios hates being king (ran away from being Chiefton as well) and would never have chosen to be king while Delgal happily took the responsibility and the throne. It’s further highlighted in how Thistle turned out as a sibling in comparison to Falin. (Thistle is a foil to Marcille but that’s pretty obvious.) There is a lot more to it, but that requires a lot more time.

Senshi = Kabru foil becomes a lot more obvious when you look at Senshi’s journey in comparison to Kabru’s where you see both of them lost the people they love due to the dungeon and monsters yet ULTIMATELY take it in two WILDLY different directions which includes Kabru starving himself in contrast to Senshi being WELL aware and making sure he and his team are always WELL FED and nourished. You also see it in the way that Kabru treats Mithrun is a mirror to how Senshi’s and Chilchuck’s relationship works. Also their dynamics to Laios being mirrored where Senshi DID NOT CARE until hearing the groups goals and wanting to help them while Kabru focused purely on his own goals which is why he was obsessed with Laios rather than seeing Laios as a person within himself. You also see it in how Senshi is a mentor for Laios throughout the dungeon to accept the ecosystem of the dungeon while Kabru becomes a mentor for how to accept people on the outside of the dungeon and such.

Mostly I just don't think we have enough focus on the differences between Laios and Delgal for it to work as well as it works with the differences between Laios and Kabru? Cause delgal doesn't show up a lot and most of their differences show up late in the story (maybe that doesnt matter tho)

I like the perspective about Kabru and Senshi too, and I agree, can a character foil more than one? Or have more than one foil? lmao

Lots of the characters in dunmeshi are contrasts to each other in different aspects I think, Shiro also contrasts with Laios a lot for example, anyway, thanks again for your perspective!

(looks out of window contemplatively) i think namari dunmeshi is a solid 5 on the kinsey scale but she also pegs guys as a recreational activity sometimes. laios, shiro and chilchuck all assume they were the only one who got the dwarf strap but namari just gets bored when the only women in a party (falin&marcille) are in a monogamous relationship and starts tearing through the men like tissue paper

Dungeon Meshi/Log Horizon.

Guys. The Genii are quite literally Nuctemeron demons. And the Log Horizon world, with how it appeared and is widening, and how it eats some of your memories every time you die and revive. Man, the deal with the bound souls sounds sounds really similar - it's just that Log Horizon has an auto-revive.

And... There were plenty of MMO players who have, at one point or another, wished to be really in the game. Imagine them dragging others in, same way, I'm guessing, the Dungeon Meshi races were formed.

Imagine a group of people of the weirdest people of the land ever (whoever survives dunmeshi - I have no idea yet, dragging out the story) coming to Seldesshia.

And finding the "reanimated golems" that the Adventurers are.

Whom they actually fit right in with.

Imagine Shiroe and ko learning about the other dungeon worlds and connecting two and two.

I wonder if that'll crash their dream of connecting two worlds, or if it'll just make them work with the challenge.
