The âAffairâ
Pairing: Charles Leclerc x Hispanic/Latina Wife! Reader
Summary: After adopting 8 dogs, Charles tells his wife no more dogs. However, as a veterinarian working in an animal shelter, itâs very hard for Y/N to turn down a dog. So when she comes home with a puppy while Charles is away but tries to make it seem like she had an affairâŠgetting a 9th dog doesnât sound so bad, right?
Warning: the usual spelling and grammatical errors, probably a lot of inaccuracies
A/N: i love Salma Hayek and the story she tells about rescuing Ochoa is so funny.
When Charles and Y/N first started dating when they were 20, he knew how much she loved dogs. The first time he went to her apartment, he saw her with two German shepherds.
âMuñeco! Please meet Sirius and Nova.â Y/N said, walking up to Charles, the two dogs following her.
"When you told me you had dogs, I donât know why, but I pictured you owning like a shih tzu or maybe a Maltese.â Charles admitted, observing the German shepherds who began sniffing him.
âWhy? You think because I am Latina I must have a white crusty dog?â Y/N asked, acting all offended.
âNo no no, of course not.â Charles responded scared that me might have offended his girlfriend.
âIâm teasing. No, I got them from the shelter. You know how Iâm studying to become a vet? So right now Iâm just a vet assistant at the shelter and when I walked in for my shift, these two dogs tried to get close to me, they would whine when I would leave the room, when I would take them outside for their walks, they would follow me, I had to adopt them. No one likes getting big dogs from the shelter, pero son tan lindos.â Y/N said, petting her dogs, the dogs were wagging their tails, enjoying the affection. Charles's heart melted. He always wanted his own dog and by the looks of it, he might get his wish with Y/N.
"How did you come up with the names?" Charles asked.
"Well obviously Sirius is named after Sirius Black from Harry Potter, and Nova to fit the space theme. Since they were picked up from the street without collars, we named them at the shelter." Y/N said. Charles leaned down to pet the dogs. Nova began licking his face while Sirius was still smelling him, you know what they say about a male dog being owned by a woman. After a few seconds, Sirius joined Nova in licking him, Charles was as happy as he can be.
"They are so friendly! Think I'll be able to stay the night?" Charles asked.
"I don't know, Char, you just joined F1, shouldn't you be training?" Y/N asked.
"I have a few days before the Monaco Grand Prix, do you want to come?" Charles asked.
"I don't know if I can leave Nova and Sirius alone." Y/N asked.
"It's only a few hours, please?" Charles asked with a pout and puppy dog eyes.
"Fine, I'll see if my neighbor can check in on them." Y/N said and her and Charles kissed.
A year later, 2019, Charles joined Scuderia Ferrari and he was on his way to Y/N's apartment after he rested a day after the Suzuka Grand prix. He opened the door with the key she gave him and he heard barking.
"Nova, Sirius, its me, you know me." Charles entered the apartment, the two German Shepherds greeted him but he still heard barking. Thats when he saw a bulldog on the couch with Y/N. "Amour, you got another dog?" Charles asked.
"Charlie! This is Hiccup, i got him on Saturday." Y/N said, getting to hug her boyfriend. "Isn't he adorable? He has a lot of health problems because of this breeder, but he is the sweetest. Come meet him." Y/N said, holding Charles's hand to lead him to the couch, sitting next to Hiccup.
"Why did you name him Hiccup?" Charles asked.
"I was watching How To Train Your Dragon, he also had a case of the hiccups when i was...como se dice, revisando...checking him! Yeah, during his checkup, he was hiccupping." Y/N said. Charles pet the bulldog and the bulldog smiled, seemingly happy getting affection.
"He is very cute, but I don't think you'll have space for another dog, mon petit chou." Charles said.
"Hiccup wanted to be with me, he wouldn't let the other shelter workers walk him, just me, it was a sign, Charles." Y/N said.
"I'm sure it was." Charles said smiling. "I'm hungry, do you want to order something?"
"Can you manage ordering Chinese food? I have to give the dogs their bath." Y/N said.
"Sure, mon ange. Same as usual?" Charles asked.
"Yes please. Lets go guys, time for your bath." Y/N said and the dogs walked slowly behind her, not being a fan of baths.
Another year later, December 2020, Charles and Y/N now live together in his penthouse apartment. One day, Charles went with Y/N to her job since he was on winter break.
"Charlie, can you check if Shaggy needs his bowl to be filled?" Y/N asked.
"Sure, amour." Charles said, He was walking through the shelter until he found the gate with the name 'Shaggy' and he saw a fluffy old English sheepdog. "Hello, Shaggy." Charles said hello to the dog and Shaggy started barking, wagging his tail. Charles went to the supply closet to get the bag of dog food, Y/n bought the brand that was specifically for this breed and pour the food in Shaggy's bowl.
"Shaggy looks very happy." Y/N said appearing next to him. Thats when Shaggy started whining and pawing at her through the gate. "Hi Shaggy, como estĂĄ mi perrito consentido?" Y/N asked in the baby voice, Shaggy lies on his back, showing that he is ready to receive belly rubs. Charles just observes this interaction.
"Are you going to adopt him, mon ange?" Charles asked.
"I would love to adopt him, but it's your apartment." Y/N said.
"Mon ange, it is your apartment too, I asked you to move in with me, it is your apartment too. We can get him, think of it as a Christmas gift." Charles said and Y/N hugged him.
"Can you fill out the adoption papers? I need to check up on a few cats in the other room. Wish me luck." Y/N said.
"Did you take your allergy medicine?" Charles asked. Y/N shook her head no.
"Thats why i need luck." Y/N said. She went with the cats while Charles filled out the adoption papers for Shaggy, since most people in Monaco want small dogs and the other shelter workers know Charles is doing this for Y/N, the process was easy and they were able to take Shaggy home the same day. When they left Shaggy went with Y/N to buy things he needs while Charles went to buy food for the both of them. Charles got home first and he said hello to Nova, Sirius, and Hiccup, place his takeout on the kitchen counter, and refilled their food and water bowls. Charles washed his hands to serve himself good and thatâs when Charles heard the door open and he saw Y/N with dog food, a dog bed, and some new toys.
âMom Ange, I could have helped you.â Charles said, getting the bed from her and placing it on the living room. âWhy does he need new toys?â
âItâs why I do for every dog, Charlie, they get new toys, they only share when they want to, it makes them feel important and that they have a permanent home.â Y/N explained to Charles. âOkay Shaggy, meet your brothers and sister.â Y/N let Shaggy off his leash and all the dogs began sniffing each other. After they got acquainted, they started playing with each other, even sharing some toys.
âCome on, mon coeur, your food will get cold, itâs time to eat.â Charles said and Y/N went to wash her hands after seeing the dogs are getting along great. She sat down to eat.
âMuñeco, do you ever think about getting a bigger place?â Y/N asked.
âEventually, yes. That way we can raise our future children.â Charles said.
2 years later, 2022, Charles and Y/N now have a huge villa on Monaco after they got married with enough room for their dogs to run around in the grass and a pool. In those 2 years, Y/N adopted 3 more dogs; a border collie, a Carin terrier mix, and an Australian shepherd. Charles was watching TV with their 7 dogs when the door opened and it revealed Y/N with a Euraiser dog, Charles stared at her and Y/N smiled.
âHis name is Koda, his owner just abandoned him like straight up went to the shelter and dropped him off, no good reason, no toys for him specifically, nothing. Me dio cosa, Charlie, like you have no idea." Y/N said and since her eyes were tearing up, he got up to hug her.
âMy love, I know you love dogs, and I love that about you, you have a big heart, but no more dogs.â Charles said, wiping her tears. Kids barked and Charles looked at him, Koda had his tongue out like he was smiling with his tail wagging. âNice to meet you Koda, welcome to the family, meet your brothers and sisters.â Charles said. Koda ran to the other dogs. âDonât be fooled by the size, Mickey is in charge.â
Koda was very happy with his new family. He was playing with Bailey and Bambi very politely using toys but full on wrestling with Sirius, he was very content. Mickey and Hiccup were just observing on their dog beds while Nova chewed on a treat.
âPromise me no more dogs, Y/N.â Charles said, cupping her face.
âI promise no more dogs, muñeco.â Y/N said.
And Y/N kept good on her promise, she was completely devoted to their 8 dogs, taking them to work sometimes for checkups, and it was all going well until.
Present day, 2024, Y/N was checking a Saint Bernard as a full fledged Shelter Veterinarian.
âRebecca, where did you get the Saint Bernard? It has worms and Iâm afraid he was in the same transport van as the pitbull mixes, I need to check them too.â Y/N said, lowering the Saint Bernard and giving him an oral medication to deworm him.
âHe was around Nice.â Rebecca answered.
âInteresting. Have the pitbulls been showing symptoms of having worms?â Y/N asked.
âThey are relatively chill, Iâll check them right now though.â Rebecca said. Moments later, another employee named Freddie came in with a dog crate.
âYou guys wonât believe what I just found by the docks.â Freddie said.
âWhy were you by the docks?â Rebecca asked.
âNo reason, but look at this.â Freddie entered the vet exams room with Rebecca and Y/N and opened the crate.
âOh my god, thatâs a pregnant yorkie, who would throw a pregnant dog on the streets?â Y/N asked, petting the yorkie. âLooks like she has fleas too.â
âIâll take care of her, your shift is over. Iâll give you updates on the yorkie.â Rebecca said.
âThanks, Iâll come in tomorrow.â Y/N said, she said goodbye to her coworkers and drove home.
When she got home, she saw all her dogs playing in the yard but as soon and they saw her, they stopped playing and ran towards her.
âHola mis bebĂ©s!â Y/N exclaimed, petting every single dog. She got their leashes to take all of them out for a walk so they're not cooped up in one area, no matter how big it is. They walked around Monaco, some children wanted to pet the dogs, other people took photos or videos of Y/N walking the dogs, the dogs were very well behaved and nonreactive, Y/N couldn't be more grateful. She walked back home, let the dogs off their leash, and washed their paws before they stepped foot inside the house.
Charles was away for the Imola Grand Prix and he said he was going to call Y/N when she got out of work. Just like he said, Y/N's laptop started ringing, she washed her hands and answere the video call.
"Hola guapo! How's Imola?" Y/N asked.
"It's good, I'm tired of press, you know? Sometimes they ask the same questions and I can't deal with it." Charles said.
"I'm sorry, mi vida." Y/N said.
"It's fine, darling. How are the babies?" Charles asked.
"Very good, I went to that bakery where they make pastries for dogs and they loved it. I'm going to look up recipes so I can bake it for them. My babies deserve the best." Y/N said and Bambi jumped in her lap. "yes Bambi, you're my baby." Y/N saod, petting the Australian shepherd. "As a kid i always wanted one, their coloring is beautiful, and now i have one. I know we can't bring all the dogs to the Monaco Paddock, but do you think we can take Mickey?" Y/N asked.
"What happened to treating the dogs equally?" Charles asked.
"Then can we bring all of them? I want them to know where their dad works. I also really want them to meet Roscoe, we can just hang around, I'll keep them entertained, also who wouldnt want to see dogs before practice or qualifying? Like come on." Y/N said.
"Y/N.." Charles warned.
"Okay fine, our children won't see where you work, but it is unfair, they're going to be all alone in the house." Y/N said.
"Yeah, with a dog sitter who will feed and play with them, walk them, and the dogs have the entire property to run around. I bought the villas so you wouldn't have to worry about the dogs as much and you worry about the same." Charles said,
"I can't help it, they're innocent creatures." Y/N said, hugging Bambi tightly and Bambi liked her face. "Look at her Charles, no thoughts behind those eyes."
"Alright my dear, I have to go, I love you." Charles said.
"I love you too." Y/N said and hung up her FaceTime and thats when she got a call from Rebecca. "Hey Rebecca, whats up?"
"Hey, so the mama yorkie is about 8 weeks along in her pregnancy, she seems healthy, but I am going to give her a diet for pregnant dogs, make sure shes getting a lot of protein and calcium for the last week of her pregnancy to make sure the birth goes smoothly." Rebecca said.
"Thanks for everything, you are the best." Y/N said and hung up. She made her dinner, making a small dog safe version for them of course, what kind of owner would she be if she didn't?
A week later, it was the Monaco free practice 3 and qualifying session, she was in the paddock with Charles since he just finished the free practice.
"You did great, guapo, I'm positive you'll make pole." Y/N said, kissing him.
"Thanks, mon ange, I just really want to win my home race and i'll have a better shot of winning if i make pole." Charles said.
"And you will, baby." Y/N said. She felt her phone vibrate and saw Freddie was calling. "Freddie, what's going on?"
"The mom is going into labor, we need you here, please! I'm still just an assistant!" Freddie panicked.
"Alright I'm coming, did she start nesting in her kennel?" Y/N asked.
"She's arranging chew toys and blankets." Freddie said.
"Okay, try your best to get her into the whelping box, I'm on my way now." Y/N hung up. "I'm sorry, mi vida, I need to deliver puppies, good luck on qualifying." Y/N kissed him goodbye and ran to her car, drove off to the shelter, and went to Nani's kennel, where she was in stage 1 of labor. "How long has she been like this?"
"About 2 hours." Rebecca answered.
"Alright, we just have to wait a little while, she should start dilating in about 4 or 10 10 hours." Y/N said.
They waited those hours and Nani succesfully whelped 4 puppies, 3 boys and one girl. Y/N helped getting the puppies out of the amniotic saca and cut the umblical cord to make the processs easier for Nani. She cleaned and rubbed the puppies until she heard them cry out, once they cried, she put them near Nani. Now Nani was feeding the puppies.
"Alright team, in 8 weeks those puppies could be adopted. Hopefull the mom will be adopted as well. Goodnight, I'm going home." Y/N said goodbye to her coworkers and drove home.
Once home, Y/N saw Charles in the living room watching 101 Dalmations.
"Ma belle, how did the delivery go?" Charles asked, pausing the movie.
"The mom delivered 4 healthy puppies, I couldn't be happier. How was qualifying?" Y/N asked.
"I got pole." Charles said. Y/N screamed in excitement and hugged him.
"i am so proud of you, we should get ice cream or go out to eat, I am starving, i didn't eat." Y/N said.
"Then lets go out, ma belle, I'll go call to see if they can prepare something so it'll be ready when we get there, I'll wait for you to change." Charles said and Y/N kissed him.
"You are the best husband ever." Y/N said.
8 weeks went by and in those 8 weeks, Y/N grew extremely close to Bubbles, the female puppy from Nani's litter. Right now, she was carrying Bubbles, comforting her after her first vaccine.
"Rebecca, he is going to kill me." Y/N said.
"What makes you say that?" Rebecca asked.
"He literally told me that I couldn't get anymore dogs. What do you think he is going to say when he comes home from Hungary and sees her on my lap?" Y/N said, holding Bubble in front of Rebecca's face. Bubbles licked Rebecca's nose.
"Aww come on, who would be mad at a little yorkie?" Rebecca cooed. "Its not like you're bringing home a Saint Bernard, or a Rottweiler."
"Rottweilers are so cute, I would absolutely bring one home if i could." Y/N said.
"You just have to make it seem like getting a puppy isn't the worst thing in the world." Rebecca said, giving the other puppies Chip, Mikey, and Donnie, their first vaccines. Y/N started thinking.
"I got it! I'll make him believe i am having an affair." Y/N said.
"Y/N, that's a little crazy even for you." Rebecca said.
"But it's perfect! I just need to set it up perfectly. Today is Friday, right?" Y/N asked.
"Yeah, why?" Rebecca asked.
"I am not cruel enough to make him worry during the important race events like qualifying or the actual race, during free practice should be fine." Y/N said before she sent the text 'Call me tonight at 8, we need to talk' and she showed it to Rebecca.
"Good luck with that." Rebecca said. Y/N filled out the adoption papers for Bubbles and bought everything a puppy needed, she carried Bubble everywhere because until she has all her Parvo vaccines, she is not touching the ground. Bubbles was wrapped in a blanket and was brought home. When she entered the house, all the dogs came up to her.
"Hello everyone, we have a new member joining the family, her name is Bubbles, everyone, be gentle." Y/N said, emphasizing gentle. She lowered Bubbles a little so everyone had the chance to sniff her. They all went their separate ways. Y/N got a text from Charles. 'What do we need to talk about?' Y/N responded 'It is crucial to our marriage that we talk.' She wants to worry him a little. Y/N had already established and good feeding schedule with her, she just needs to adjust her potty spot. When she checked that this is the time she usually does her business in the shelter, she took her outside and let her pee on the patch of grass thats near the pool. When she was done, Bubbles trotted right to Y/N and Y/N picked her up, giving her little kisses. Thats when she heard her laptop ring.
"It's show time." Y/N said, placing Bubbles on the couch with her blanket. "Watch her." Y/N told Nova and Nova moved to the couch, keeping her eyes on the puppy. Y/N answered the FaceTime.
âPetit Chou, whatâs wrong? What do we need to talk about? Canât it wait until Iâm home?â Charles asked.
âNo no, I have to tell you know, the guilt is eating me alive.â Y/N said, getting teary eyed, if she wants Charles to believe she had an affair, she really has to sell it.
âMon coeur, you can tell me anything, what happened?â Charles asked, sounding very worried.
âThis isnât easy for me to say, I love you so much, you have to know that, but my job has me very stressed, I feel like I don't have a life outside of work because you are always traveling and I work late sometimes, we are like two passing ships. Please, have mercy on me, understand where I am coming from, I get so lonely when you're not here.â Y/N finished saying and she covered her face, just waiting to hear Charlesâs reaction.
âPlease donât tell me you got another dog.â Charles said and Y/N uncovered her face.
âHow did you know I adopted another dog?â Y/N asked.
âMy love, I know you, you would never cheat on me.â Charles said.
âI could have.â Y/N argued.
âYou love me too much.â Charles argued back.
âYou didnât believe me?â Y/N asked.
âNot at all.â Charles said.
âOh come on, that was phenomenal acting, I donât know what youâre talking about.â Y/N said.
âI think you overdid it.â Charles said.
âWell i acted better than you did for that Shell commercial.â Y/N said.
âForget about it, can i see the dog? Did you get a big one?â Charles said. Y/N moved off screen to pick up the yorkie.
âActually sheâs a little puppy, I named her Bubbles, apparently this awful person put her dog out on the street because she was pregnant so the mama yorkie was actually with us for a while, i supervised the birth, i was bonding with the mom and her litter, but i guess this one really liked me and she would seek me out. Isnât she adorable?â Y/N said, putting Bubbles closer to the screen so Charles can see her in all her glory.
âShe is adorable, canât wait to meet her.â Charles said,
âIm so excited for you to meet her too! This is the first time we can raise a puppy together, i can take her with me to work for her vaccines, we need a lot of bonding time with her. I honesty hope the other yorkies get adopted though, theyâre so cute! I would adopt them all if I could.â Y/N confessed.
âI know you would. Please let Bubble be the final dog, I really mean it this time, Y/N." Charles said.
"Okay, okay, i promised Bubbles will be our last dog...for now." Y/N said.
"Y/N!" Charles shouted.
"Okay okay, te lo juro juradito por las haditas that Bubbles will be our last dog." Y/N said.
"That's more like it." Charles said.
"So how was free parctice?" Y/N asked Charles, placing Bubbles on her lap, giving her a small chew toy since she's teething.
"Well what happened was..." Charles said.
The End
Hope y'all liked it! I know the buildup was VERY long but i wanted to show you how much Y/N loved dogs.

thought you may enjoy my absolutely atrocious old dog :)
his name was teebo and he was a yorkie/shih tzu mix.
by the time these pictures were taken (especially the first one), he was 14+ and had cataracts in both eyes and was mostly deaf and had some form of canine dementia among other health problems. also he jumped out the window of a moving car like at least twice when he was young?
sounds like this fellow has lived a rather storied life! thank you very much for sharing him with us all

Nola Rose's Big Birthday Poll
This is Nola Rose:
She is my best girl, my babylove, my beloved little butt and my most precious evil eel, and in one week, she will be one year old!
Recently, I ordered her an Embark test, in the hopes of one day reuniting her with one of her siblings or other family members, and to maybe get an idea of what other health problems I could expect in the future.
I was not expecting any surprises on the breed front, because the rescue had Nola's original paperwork from her "breeders," indicating her mama was a brown Cocker Spaniel named Spruce, and her daddy was a registered blenheim Cavalier King Charles named Fellow. AND YET.
...and 7.2% something I did not expect at all. Full honesty, I don't see it, but maybe it explains a few things about her?
ANYWAY. For Nola's impending birthday, I thought it might be fun to survey other people, to see their best guesses at the third breed in Nola's genetic cocktail. I've pulled all poll options from an article on the most common breeds for Cavalier crosses, and additional photos and possible clues to her ancestry below the read more.
Psst, for folks coming back for the answer, check the pinned reblog!
Starting from the top, BABY PHOTOS, of Nola Rose and the two sisters the rescue picked up from the puppy mill auction.
That photo of Nola on the left was the photo in her Petfinder listing, the one I saw by accident in the middle of the night that made me fall in love with her immediately. I honestly have no idea how she was the last of her siblings left to be adopted, but I will never not be desperately grateful.
Maybe it was because she had the dramatic eyebrows and mutton chops of a civil war general, I can't say. In more recent photos, you can see that the eyebrows and bushy cheeks have subsided, but the insanely luxurious eyelashes remain.
Her color has darkened immensely since I brought her home in August. She used to be a much lighter sable, and fully blonde on the top of her head.
Speaking of which, sable isn't a breed standard color in either Cavaliers or Cockers, and her ridiculously long chin beard (which you won't see in any of her photos because I have her groomer trim it off) doesn't appear in those breeds either. Coincidence?
At just shy of a year, she's hopefully maxed out at 18 pounds, and she's unbelievably leggy, with an outrageously long body and the deep chest of a racing dog. (She's also fast as hell, good god.)
Her fur is unbelievably silky, save for a coarser ruff over her shoulders and trailing down her spine, and her cocker-fluff booty feathers. Her back end was trimmed down substantially before the above photo. Her tail might be the softest part of her, and I love how it's both silky and curly.
Behaviorally... she's. Something.
Nola has the strongest prey drive of any dog I've ever met, including that time we babysat a rat terrier mix named Ella The Killer. Nola's little heart is so full of murder that I have to close curtains so she won't hurt herself trying to break through the windows to get at bunnies. She is a grand champion at "breaking the necks" of her toys by way of viciously shaking them.
Nola likes to burrow! She tunnels under blankets, rugs and throw pillows, and her favorite way to sit On A People is between our legs when we're in recliners. She likes to feel confined. She also deeply enjoys being held, and she asks to be picked up by my father at least once a day, even tho she's perfectly capable of jumping into his lap by herself now.
She LOVES to lie in the sun until her little body is radioactively hot and her mouth smells like hot rotting garbage, which is actually extremely weird, because she's our second sable dog in a row to have solar-powered halitosis and I'm not above begging people for answers. If you have a dog that has especially stinky breath after they've been in the sun, indoors or out, please talk to me because I'm dying for answers.
Ahem. What else.
Nola is disturbingly smart, and has no concept of obedience, but an excellent grasp of the concept of naughtiness. She knows exactly which items in the house are Forbidden, and which ones will get our attention the quickest if she takes or otherwise threatens them. She also knows the names of most of her toys and can distinguish between them when she's feeling cooperative.
Her favorite way to wake me up when it's time for work is to jump up on my bed, pounce on me, and oh-so-gently bite the tip of my nose. (I know I shouldn't encourage it but it's so sweet I may die.)
She investigates new people by aggressively sniffing their eyes.
She is my tiny daughter with every disease, but despite her allergies, and her asthma, and her megaesophagus, and her subluxated hip, she is the happiest, most delightful little being in all the world.
I lov her.

What Are Pocket Dogs? Pocket dogs, also known as toy or teacup breeds, are small dogs that weigh between 2 to 9 kilograms. Popular breeds include Chihuahuas, Pomeranians, Shih Tzus, and Pugs. Their small size makes them perfect for apartment living, but they have specific training and healthcare needs that differ from larger breeds.
Importance of Training Pocket Dogs Training is crucial for any dog, and pocket dogs are no exception. While they are small, they can develop behavioral issues like barking, separation anxiety, or stubbornness. Proper training helps:
Prevent behavioral problems
Ensure the dogâs safety
Strengthen your bond
Promote mental and physical health Training also helps avoid frustration for owners by establishing clear communication between you and your pet.
Benefits of Pocket Dog Training for Health and Behavior Training not only shapes your dog's behavior but also has a direct impact on their overall well-being. Letâs explore how training benefits both health and behavior:
Behavioral Benefits:
Improves Discipline: Basic commands like "sit," "stay," and "come" help pocket dogs understand boundaries and rules.
Reduces Anxiety: Dogs that know what to expect tend to be calmer and less anxious, which is essential for pocket breeds that are often sensitive.
Encourages Social Behavior: Early socialization makes pocket dogs more friendly with other pets and people, reducing aggression and fear.
Health Benefits:
Boosts Physical Fitness: Training that involves play or exercises, like fetch or obstacle courses, helps maintain a healthy weight.
Mental Stimulation: Training sessions provide mental exercise, preventing boredom and destructive behaviors.
Prevents Obesity: Active training routines keep your pocket dog moving, which is important for small breeds prone to weight gain.
Basics of Pocket Dog Training Start with foundational training techniques to build good habits in your dog.
4.1. House Training (Potty Training) House training is one of the first things you should work on with your pocket dog. These steps can help:
Set a Routine: Establish a bathroom schedule, taking them out first thing in the morning, after meals, and before bed.
Use a Crate: Pocket dogs respond well to crate training, as it provides a safe space and helps with potty training by using their instinct to avoid soiling their sleeping area.
Positive Reinforcement: Reward your dog every time they go to the bathroom outside with praise or treats.
Limit Water Intake at Night: This can reduce accidents during the night.
4.2. Obedience Training Obedience training includes teaching basic commands:
Sit: Use a treat to guide your dogâs nose upward while gently pushing their back end down.
Stay: After sitting, step back, say âstay,â and reward them when they hold the position.
Come: Call your dog from a distance and reward them when they come to you.
Consistency is key, and regular, short sessions are better than long, sporadic ones.
4.3. Socialization Expose your pocket dog to various environments, people, and animals early on. This helps reduce fear and ensures that your dog will be well-behaved in different settings. Take them to parks, meet other dogs, and introduce them to new sights and sounds.
Advanced Pocket Dog Training Once your pocket dog masters the basics, itâs time to move on to advanced training to further improve behavior and mental sharpness.
5.1. Behavioral Correction Pocket dogs can sometimes develop bad habits like excessive barking or biting. Hereâs how you can address these issues:
Barking Control: Train them to follow the âquietâ command by rewarding them when they stop barking. Ignore bad behavior rather than punishing them, as negative attention can reinforce the habit.
Biting Prevention: If your dog starts to bite, say ânoâ firmly and offer them a toy to redirect their attention.
5.2. Mental Stimulation Pocket dogs may be small, but they need plenty of mental exercise:
Puzzle Toys: Invest in puzzle toys where your dog has to figure out how to get a treat out of a hidden compartment.
Interactive Games: Teach your dog the names of their toys and have them fetch specific ones.
Hide and Seek: Play a simple game of hide and seek, either with yourself or with toys, to keep them engaged.
5.3. Trick Training Once basic obedience is mastered, teach your dog fun tricks like:
Roll Over: Use a treat to guide them into rolling over. Shake Paw: Hold their paw and say âshakeâ before rewarding them.
Spin: With a treat, encourage them to follow it in a circular motion.
Trick training keeps your dog mentally engaged and strengthens the bond between you.
Common Challenges in Pocket Dog Training and Solutions
Even with training, some challenges are bound to arise. Here's how to handle common issues:
6.1. Stubbornness Pocket dogs can sometimes be willful. If your dog ignores commands:
Stay Consistent: Donât give in when they resist. Maintain a firm, positive approach.
Shorter Training Sessions: Pocket dogs may have shorter attention spans. Keep sessions to 5-10 minutes to prevent frustration.
6.2. Separation Anxiety Pocket dogs can become overly attached and anxious when left alone.
Crate Training: Crates can help create a sense of security.
Desensitization: Start leaving your dog alone for short periods and gradually increase the time.
Training Tips for Different Pocket Dog Breeds Different breeds have slightly different temperaments, so tailor your approach based on the breed:
Chihuahuas: These dogs are prone to barking. Focus on âquietâ training and early socialization.
Pomeranians: They can be independent, so use plenty of praise and positive reinforcement.
Shih Tzus: Known for their stubbornness, Shih Tzus may need shorter training sessions.
Pugs: Pugs love food, so using treats during training is highly effective, but watch for overfeeding.
Health Considerations During Training Training affects a dogâs health, so consider the following:
Avoid Overexertion: Pocket dogs have small frames, so avoid activities that are too physically demanding.
Joint Protection: Some pocket breeds are prone to joint issues. Avoid excessive jumping or hard landings.
Balanced Diet: Training often involves treats, so make sure your dogâs diet is balanced to avoid obesity.
Hydration: Ensure your dog is always hydrated, especially after training sessions.
Tools & Equipment for Pocket Dog Training Having the right tools can make training more effective:
Leash and Harness: A lightweight harness is better for small dogs, as it wonât strain their necks.
Training Treats: Use small, healthy treats to avoid overfeeding.
Clicker: A clicker can reinforce commands with a sound cue, speeding up learning.
Puzzle Toys: For mental stimulation during breaks.
Final Thoughts â A Recap of Key Points Training your pocket dog is essential for their behavior and health. By starting with basic commands like house training, obedience, and socialization, you set the foundation for a well-mannered dog. Advanced training, including behavioral correction, mental stimulation, and trick training, keeps your pocket dog sharp and happy.
Remember, training should be a fun bonding experience for both you and your dog. Consistency, patience, and a positive approach are the keys to success.
Blog in a Nutshell:
Training your pocket dog is an ongoing process that significantly boosts their behavior and health. By starting with the basics, you help your pet become well-behaved and happy, while advanced training keeps their mind and body active. Whether itâs house training, solving behavioral issues, or teaching fun tricks, a well-trained pocket dog is a healthier, happier pet.

Gonna say that I really don't get the kneejerk doodle hate. Are most of them well bred? No, not really (health testing, people. We can do that now). But neither are the vast majority of Golden Retrievers or Labs.
Is it possible to get a healthy doodle? Yeah. I know two of them. They are 12 y/o Cavapoos who belong to a person who wanted traits from both breeds, but not those two dogs. She's happy with what she got. They have fewer health issues at 12 than my Golden Retriever (registered, from solid lines, but still has health problems) and her (registered, from health tested parents) Italian Greyhound. Did she have to train her dogs? Yes. Are they a pain in the ass to groom? Also yes.
But so is my Golden. So was the German Shepherd my aunt had before. My sister has a Shih Tzu/Chihuahua mix that's basically a Shih Tzu with a much shorter coat. Also a nice dog. Did she need to be trained? Yes. Does she have a bit of a PITA coat? Also yes.
I actually wonder how much of the doodle stuff comes from stupid people owning dogs. The same person who has a fat husky with a matted coat and untrimmed nails is going to do the same with a doodle. Their issue right now is that they're a trendy mix and bad breeders are going for quantity over quality.
I will say that I'm not impressed with my purebred, registered Golden. She's allergic to both grain and chicken, along with other issues, and that makes caring for her hard. I can read a pedigree and I got her from a good breeder who has supported me through the struggle with my dog. She's a good dog, but I don't know if I'm going down the purebred route again. It just may not be right for me.

Easy mode: Beauce <3
Hard mode: Akita, golden, shih tzu, corgi, shar pei, GSD and husky (based on patients at work today)
Thank you for the ask! đ
Beauce - OOHHH the perfect dog. They're such fun, physical dogs. They're so fun to hang out with, so biddable and willing to work with you, and always in such good moods. They always put their everything into what they love and it really, really shows. They've got a much better off-switch than a lot of people anticipate, and they're so loving and dedicated. They get along so well with 99% of people when approached right and with practically every dog. They're all so unique, with such individual personalities you can see even in their faces. And, of course, little eyebrows and double dews. đđ„°
Akitas - I like American Akitas. They're not for me, but I can appreciate them. They're such beautiful dogs, and a lot of them are really pleasant and fun to hang out with. They're aloof, but I've yet to meet one that's been outright aggressive or anything (but I give them a pretty wide breadth at shows when I've got a dog with me). Such gorgeous dogs. I don't like Akita Inus - I don't like the way they look and the ones I've met have been sort of skittish and weird. So barky.
Golden Retrievers - My most lukewarm take is that I really really don't like Goldens. I don't really have like? A problem with them? They're awesome, they do what they're meant to and they do it well (such great family dogs. So fun, so biddable, so smooth brain), but they're so. So dumb. So. So blindly loving. Every one I've met would trade their owner for like, a passing glance. They're gorgeous though, I love their little faces, and I'll appreciate them from a distance. Also - the health.
Shih Tzu - Oh man, I don't have many breeds I don't like but you managed to list two of them, lol. I really don't like Shih Tzus. I can't do the snorting, I can't do the wheezing, I can't do the crusty-stinky of a lot of the ones I see outside of shows. And the grooming!!! I will say that I think the ones in the show ring are really, really cute, and they're incredibly sweet, so. Again. They're really good at what they're meant to do, and I appreciate them for that. Just not for me, and most of my experiences with them have been. Really, really negative, LOL.
Corgis - I prefer Cardigans to Pembrokes, but I broadly like them both! They're a little barky and demanding for me, but that attitude and sass makes them so fun. They really seem to put their whole heart into everything they do, and they're such smart, mischievous dogs, and they're so funny. They have such good senses of humour. Cardigans are a little more serious, which I appreciate, and a lean a little more into the herdy/worky genes. Pembroke nubs are adorable, Cardigan fox tails are adorable, the satellite ears are adorable, etc., etc. They're a little rude to other dogs but it's fine, they can be rude as a treat.
Shar Pei - I have no strong feelings about Shar Peis. I've met several and my thoughts are: they look like cinnamon rolls, I love their faces, they are so shaped, they do not give a shit about anyone except for sometimes their owners if they have food, and they have really poor health. I think they're really cute though.
German Shepherd Dogs - My feelings on GSDs are pretty conflicting. I find GSDs broadly to be pretty annoying, they're super whiny and super prone to being neurotic and demand barking 24/7, but they're also really smart, biddable, and versatile. They're a ton of fun to hang out with and work with, and there are few sights more beautiful than a GSD working a flock. Gorgeous, gorgeous dogs. They move so horribly in the ring though, absolutely does not do them justice! Get that dog, sloped back and all, out in the pasture and you can Really see that beautiful, fluid, efficient movement. They're so affectionate and so sweet with the people they trust and they're such fun, wiggly puppies. Then there's the health and the 293848 different lines and the weird German show line GSDs that are enormous and hairy and jowly and the "working" lines that look and act like oversized Mals and can't herd to save their lives and so on.
Sibes - I really thought I would hate Sibes going into attending dog shows but I really like them, lol. They're kind of annoying (so loud jfc), but they're so sweet and SO SOFT. They're really just big cuddlebugs and I can appreciate that. I will never have a lifestyle that could accommodate a Sibe, nor would I ever want to have one, but I love love love the ones I meet at shows. So sweet. So, so sweet. They're also quite pretty, I think show line ones are just gorgeous. The blue eyed ones scare me though LOL

Top 5 dog breeds you would not own? You wanted to answer this one :P
Skjdjdjdkskskd woaG it's like u read my mind anon! How did u do that?? Totally did not say that in the previous ask tags u just magic! Incredible!
But ok let's goo:
PUG! Do i need to explain myself? I don't think i do. Unless mixed with something to help their health issues, i would never intentionally own one
Shih Tzu - several reasons i don't even know where to start. Also being a breed with short snout is one, but the main thing for me is that they're EVERYWHERE where I live. You can't walk around without being barked and lunged at by a shih tzu behind a gate or on walks. My aunt is also my neighbor and she has three, they're absolutely adorable lil fluffy loafs, but anything they see their bark is almost unstoppable. They're very cute! But the fact they're everywhere also puts me off bc it feels they're being over-bred by people who don't know better and aggravating their health and behavior issues.
Dachshund - they're one of the breeds with the loudest bark, created to make noise to alert hunters. I would also worry about grabbing them the wrong way and injuring their backs owo'' i don't think i would manage that well
Yorkshire Terrier - it's a mix between the two previous dogs reasons. Loud and worryingly everywhere! I also had another relative who had three at the same time (rest in peace babies <3 visiting them feels quiet now bc they're not there) and while they were adorable and i loved to see them, and arriving at their place was nightmare bc of noise and mess, i would always leave having allergic reactions if we stayed for too long (i don't even know how since Yorkies are told to be hypoallergenic! Probably the pee everywhere). While I think most of their problems were from not ideal care, i just didn't have the best experiences being around them
Husky - Look look... I've been actually walking my cousin's husky for a couple of weeks now. I wake up at 7am, and 7:30 I'm at their house to play and train, at 8am we leave for an 1h+ walk. SHE'S LOVELY! Cute, smart, funny, and beautiful! We get so many compliments in our walks. But goof lord she's stubborn, she's a jumper, she's a nipper, she's a stubborn, she's a leash puller, she rains fur behind her where she goes, did i mention stubborn? I think when it comes to huskies, she is actually very well behaved! She's responding well to the limited amateur training i can give her. She is not reactive at all and thankfully doesn't care about any trash or other dog's poop on the floor. But i don't think my arms and legs and eardrums would survive owning one dkdkkf
#this was fun thank uuuuu!!!!! dkdjkdodkdjjf#u might notice my Like list was mostly big dogs#and this one js mostly small dogs...#well#there is a pattern that i mostly grew up around small dogs tbag weren't the best behaved#so theyre my reference mdjfjf#interacting with a bigger dog to me still feels like something magical till this day#bucket of answers

Shih tzu puppies are the worst dog breed for many reasons. They are stubborn, noisy, and high maintenance. They require constant grooming, training, and attention. They suffer from many health problems, such as eye infections, ear infections, dental problems, and breathing problems. They are not suitable for families with children, as they can be aggressive and territorial. In this article, I will cover the main pitfalls of owning a Shih tzu puppies, and why you should avoid them at all costs. I would also compare them to other dog breeds that are more suited to different lifestyles and preferences. I will provide evidence and examples to support my claims. By the end of this post, youâll understand why the Shih tzu puppies are the worst dog breed ever. For more information just visit link

Iâm moving to my new home this week! Last time I lived all by myself was when I was 21 so itâs been a while. Iâm so excited! And a bit worried too because my mental health makes it difficult to take care of basics. But since this is a form âsupported livingâ (best way I can translate it) that the mental hospital arranged for me I donât have to be all alone with my problems anymore. Thereâs an office basically next to my home where there is a counselor thatâs there during the weekdays. She was these adorable curly Shih Tzus that will be in the office probably most of the time and she told me thereâs a dog park nearby, so we can go out there with the dogs! Also my mum is allowed to come over for days with her puppy with her as long as we donât leave her alone. Iâm not sure yet if Iâm allowed to take one my of my cats with me since dogs arenât allowed to live there. But weâll see! Anyway, Iâm simming rn and waiting to start moving the first stuff there :)

Keep Your Dog Cool In the Summer
As the weather gets warmer and the sun gets brighter, we look forward to spending more time outside, however, the potential for dehydration, heatstroke, and danger to our dogs increases.
Being prepared for the heat of summer and knowing how to handle symptoms of overheating in your pet is important. Understanding which signs to look for is crucial, especially as some dog breeds are more susceptible to overheating than others due to their physiology. Because of their flattened faces, breeds such as Pugs, Boxers, Â Shih Tzus, and Bulldogs have a more difficult time breathing when overexerted. These pets, along with the elderly, overweight, and pets with health problems should be kept cool more often than not.
What is Heatstroke?
Heatstroke occurs when the body becomes unable to control its temperature due to too much time in the heat: the bodyâs temperature rises rapidly and the body is unable to cool down. Signs of heatstroke include:
Excessive panting
Difficulty breathing
Increased heart and breathing rate
Drooling
Glazed Eyes
Profuse salivation
Vomiting
Deep red or purple tongue
Weakness or lethargy
Lack of balance or collapsing
If your dog shows signs of being overheated, quickly move them into the shade or an air-conditioned area. Applying ice packs or cold towels to their head, neck, and chest or run cool (not cold) water over them will help them cool down fast. Allow them to drink small amounts of cool water or lick ice cubes. Take them directly to a veterinarian if you think they are experiencing heatstroke or show signs of excessive stress due to the heat.
How Do I Keep My Pet Safe Outside?
Any time your pet is outside, itâs paramount to ensure that they have protection from the heat and direct sun, as well as having access to plenty of fresh, cold water. During times of excessive heat, adding ice to water can be helpful. Tarps and shade under trees are great sources of cooling because they donât obstruct air flow but provide relief from direct sunlight.
When taking dogs out for a walk or to play, be aware of the surfaces they are walking on. On an 86-degree day, the asphalt can reach temperatures as high as 135 degrees! At 125 degrees, the pad of a dogâs paw can get burned in as little as 60 seconds.
A good rule to keep in mind is that when it comes to hot pavement: if it is too hot for your bare feet or the palm of your hand, it is too hot for their paws.
Top Tricks For Keeping Your Dog Cool
Whip up a batch of quick and easy DIY frozen treats for your dog this summer. A delicious Pupsicle recipe can be found HERE.
Keep your pet from overheating with a cooling body wrap, vest, or mat. You can find these at local pet stores or online at retailers like If your dog enjoys water, provide a shallow childâs pool for a cool soaking.
Always provide your pet with plenty of fresh water, whether your pets are inside or out. Hydration is one of the most essential needs for pet health. The hotter the temperature outside, the more water they will drink.
Splashing around in small, shallow pools of water or hosing down the driveway and sidewalk can make a big difference and help to ensure your dog doesnât burn his or her paws. Remember, dogs do not have the ability to sweat, making it much harder for them to cool off their bodies. However, the bottom of your dogâs paws and the spaces between their toes function to keep them cool, meaning keeping their paws cool helps keep them cool!

For context I've been thinking about getting a dog, although not seriously enough to have started researching. I'm curious if there are any dog breeds you would recommend for a new dog owner? Or is it more that there are certain dog breeds that new dog owners shouldn't be allowed to get?
i more meant theres dogs inexperienced owners should be like, banned from having. but thereâs tons of fantastic breeds that are perfect for new owners !! obviously every dog has characteristics that make it unique and animals are unpredictable at best but there are some safer bets.
my personal faves would be:
- poodles/poodle mixes
- labs and retrievers
- spaniels like the springer or cocker spaniels (both american and english are great dogs)
- shih tzus, bichons and papillions are all awesome small dogs
- mutts !!!! love a mutt. if you go talk to some staff at a shelter and tell them what youâre looking for personality wise, thereâs a high likelihood the shelter will know their animalsâ temperament and will be able to help you make an informed choice. thatâs usually a lot more accurate than picking a breed and a puppy and crossing your fingers. plus, mutts live longer on average and have less health problems than dedicated AKC type breeds.

The crusty little white dog is just an admittedly much more harmless variant of the wheezy pug problem.
The crusty little white dog is a stereotype because people keep buying specifically fluffy little white dogs, so people keep churning out little white puppies with no concerns about health or temperament or conformation beyond "small, white, fluffy". And then people get the dogs as companions and do little to no training and don't know how to keep them healthy.
They fill the same niche as chihuahuas, with some differences that make them slightly worse-
1) white dogs always show tear stains like crazy, so they just look more neglected at equivalent levels of upkeep regardless of whatever allergies or other issues may be present
2) fluffy or longhaired dogs need a lot more grooming upkeep. The easy to maintain cuts are easy to make look bad, even before they grow out. See 1
3) 'crusty little white dog' is a broad category. Subtypes only add more annoying characteristics. Shih Tzus can be as brachycephalic as pugs, and even the ones with muzzles tend to bad under bites. An overweight chihuahua can be a crusty little dog. Toy poodles can be just as needy as the standard size, and several other popular breeds are straight up terriers
4) sometimes people who think they're too good for chihuahuas go for the crusty little white dog as a luxury option. All else aside, this is baseline chihuahua owner nonsense with an extra veneer of knockoff designer fashion
I love my stupid little chihuahua/min pin rescue mutt, but I've got to wipe her face down every other day and even after sorting out skin issues she's got no undercoat and barely any hair on her belly. With equivalent attention, grooming, and training she'd still be a bit crusty if she were a little white dog.
We didn't actually want a chihuahua when we were looking at dogs, but we definitely didn't want a little white thing, for good reason.
do not raise a word against those crusty little white dogs in my presence. 1. they are some of the only breeds that were bred to live in a dumpy apartment not like a golden retriever who longs to swim and run and canât even chill on your dumb couch cuz of the hair 2. Youâll be singing a different tune when the crusty little dog is a tiny little puppy and is the shade of a beautiful jasmine bloom⊠and you make fun of the old ladies for babying them when theyâre crusty and old but someone will be taking care of YOU when youâre old and crusty and you will wish they love you as much as those old ladies love their crusty dogsâŠ.

FROM POODLES TO PUGS: WHY YOUR DOGâS BREED DESERVES SPECIALIZED CARE
Jenny, a proud pug owner, noticed her furry pet Max, scratching more than usual. She thought, his short silky coat didnât require much maintenance. She thought a routine grooming session might help, so she took him to a nearby salon. However, after the salon, Max still felt something off. Her coat didnât have the usual shine and the groomer used a shampoo that irritated his sensitive skin. It then became clear to Jenny that Max needed more than a standard grooming sessionâ specialized care tailored to his breed.
After this, she realized the importance of finding the best dog groomers Toronto. If you are on the same hunt, go through this blog to understand why your pup deserves specialized care.
WHY BREED MATTERS IN GROOMING
Every dog breed is unique, not just in terms of temperament and behavior but also in terms of skin sensitivity, coat type, and grooming needs. For example, the luxurious coat of Shih Tzu needs careful detangling and clipping, and the short, dense hair of the pug needs frequent washing of the skin to avoid infections. A groomer who understands these distinctions customizes their services so your dog leaves the salon in good health and comfort.
Take poodles, for example. Their curly, hypoallergenic coat needs to be clipped and styled regularly to avoid matting and detangling. Besides, their jaw-dropping cuts like the "Continental" or "Lamb" trim require precision and skill. A one-size-fits-all approach simply wonât do justice to either breed.
THE PERILS OF GENERIC GROOMING
Generic grooming in which all dogs are treated the same can lead to more than just a bad hair day. With understanding individual needs, groomers can avoid using the wrong shampoo, cutting a coat improperly, or ignoring areas that need extra attention. For example, breeds like Golden Retrievers need de-shedding treatment to keep their coats thick and double-coated. Ignoring this will result in discomfort and skin problems.
SPECIALIZED CARE FOR EVERY BREED
Whether your pet is an energetic Border Collie or a regal Afghan Hound, proper grooming is important for health. Suitable grooming according to your dog's breed helps ensure its comfort, health, and appearance. A skilled groomer will take the time to understand your dog's needs, from the equipment to the products they use, to provide a secure and enjoyable experience for you and your pet.
A professional groomer can make all the difference in a bustling metropolis like Toronto. So, go beyond the regular for your dog's next grooming appointment. Top Groomers like Paws in the Bath offer exceptional grooming services and treat your pet as their family.
Their extensive experience and commitment to excellence make them the top choice in the city. The best dog groomers in Toronto will offer everything they have to ensure your furry friend gets nothing less than a top-tier relaxing session. So, what you are waiting for? Book your appointment today.

Dog Knee Braces for Specific Breeds: Catering to Unique Anatomical Considerations
One summer evening, Lisa noticed something different about her three-year-old German Shepherd, Bruno. What was once a sprint to greet her at the door had slowed to a limp. After a trip to the vet, she was told that Bruno had torn his cranial cruciate ligament (CCL)âa common injury in large dogs. The vet recommended a dog knee brace to stabilize Brunoâs knee and prevent further damage. Like many dog owners, Lisa had never thought about knee braces for dogs, but soon learned that certain breeds are particularly prone to joint issues due to their unique anatomy.
This is not a unique story. Certain breeds are more prone to knee injuries and joint problems than others, particularly those with unique anatomical traits. The quality of life for your pet may be much improved by knowing the advantages of dog knee braces and how they meet these particular demands, regardless of whether you own a large, energetic breed or a smaller, more fragile dog.
Why Certain Breeds Are Prone to Knee Injuries
Just as different breeds have distinct personalities, they also have unique physical traits that can predispose them to certain health issues. Larger breeds like German Shepherds, Labradors, and Golden Retrievers are especially prone to CCL injuries due to the stress their size puts on their joints. In fact, studies show that CCL injuries affect approximately 5% of all dogs, with large breeds being disproportionately affected. Over time, these injuries can lead to arthritis if left untreated.
On the other hand, smaller breeds, like Dachshunds and Chihuahuas, are more susceptible to patellar luxationâa condition where the kneecap dislocates from its normal position. This is particularly common in breeds with short legs and long backs, which create added pressure on their joints.
Dog Knee Braces: A Tailored Solution for Different Breeds
When it comes to dog knee braces, there is no âone size fits allâ solution. Each breedâs anatomical structure must be considered to ensure the brace provides the right level of support. For instance, a knee brace for dogs with longer legs, like a Greyhound or a Whippet, needs to account for their slim build and muscular structure, while a brace for a Basset Hound should accommodate their short, stocky legs and elongated body.
For breeds prone to CCL injuries, like Golden Retrievers and German Shepherds, a custom dog knee brace is often the best option. These braces are molded to the dogâs specific anatomy, providing targeted support that limits unnecessary movement and reduces strain on the injured joint. In a study of dogs with CCL injuries, it was found that 80% of dogs using knee braces showed significant improvement in mobility within just a few weeks.
Smaller breeds, such as Yorkies or Pomeranians, benefit from lighter, more flexible braces. These dog braces are designed to stabilize the joint without restricting movement, allowing for continued mobility while providing support. Itâs important to remember that the wrong type of brace can worsen the problem, so always consult a veterinarian for advice on the most appropriate option for your dogâs breed.
Stats That Highlight the Importance of Breed-Specific Knee Braces
CCL Injuries in Large Breeds: Approximately 20% of large breeds will suffer from CCL injuries at some point in their lives. Studies suggest that breeds like Labrador Retrievers and Rottweilers are more than twice as likely to experience these injuries compared to smaller breeds.
Patellar Luxation in Small Breeds: Up to 8% of smaller dogs are prone to patellar luxation. Toy breeds like Poodles, Pugs, and Shih Tzus often develop this condition due to their delicate skeletal structure.
Effectiveness of Knee Braces for Dogs: Research has shown that over 75% of dogs with knee injuries who used braces, instead of undergoing surgery, experienced improved mobility and reduced pain.
What most websites donât discuss is how important it is to consider the dogâs breed-specific anatomy when choosing a knee brace. For example, Great Danes, which are prone to both CCL injuries and hip dysplasia, require a sturdier, more robust brace to withstand their massive size, while smaller, lightweight dogs need something that wonât impede their natural movement.
The Hidden Benefit of Knee Braces: Preventing Muscle Atrophy
Another crucial aspect of dog knee braces that often goes overlooked is their ability to prevent muscle atrophy. When a dog suffers from a knee injury, their instinct is to favor the healthy leg, reducing use of the injured limb. Over time, this leads to muscle loss in the affected leg. A well-fitted knee brace encourages the dog to continue using both legs, keeping muscles engaged and preventing further weakening.
Choosing the Right Dog Knee Brace
When selecting a knee brace for dogs, itâs essential to consider not only the breed but also the severity of the injury. Custom knee braces are ideal for dogs recovering from surgery or dealing with chronic joint issues. For minor injuries or as a preventive measure, off-the-shelf braces may be sufficient.
Additionally, always ensure that the brace is fitted correctly. A poorly fitted brace can cause discomfort, limit movement, or even exacerbate the injury. Most dogs will adapt to wearing a brace within a few days, but itâs important to monitor them closely to ensure the brace is functioning as intended.
Conclusion: A Lifesaver for Dogs with Unique Needs
For dog owners like Lisa, discovering the benefits of a dog knee brace was a game-changer for Bruno. By catering to his breedâs specific anatomical needs, the brace not only provided relief from his knee injury but also gave him a new lease on life.
No matter the breed, whether you own an energetic Border Collie, a delicate Chihuahua, or a massive Mastiff, a dog knee brace can offer the support your dog needs to stay active and pain-free. As more dog owners become aware of the importance of breed-specific care, knee braces for dogs are becoming an essential part of maintaining joint health and ensuring a long, happy life for our four-legged friends

Why Professional Pet Grooming Is Worth the Investment
Pet owners want the best for their furry friends, and one aspect of pet care that often gets overlooked is professional grooming. Whether you own a dog or a cat, grooming plays a vital role in your pet's overall health and well-being. While some pet owners prefer to groom their pets at home, professional grooming services offer numerous benefits that make the investment worthwhile. In this article, we will explore the reasons why professional pet grooming is a valuable investment and why it should be part of your pet care routine.
The Importance of Regular Pet Grooming
Enhancing Your Petâs Health
Regular pet grooming is essential for maintaining your pet's physical health. Groomers are trained to spot potential health problems like skin conditions, parasites, or abnormal growths that you might miss. By addressing these issues early on, you can prevent serious health problems from developing.
For instance, dogs and cats with long fur are prone to matting, which can lead to skin infections and discomfort. A professional dog grooming or cat grooming session ensures that your pet's coat is kept in prime condition, reducing the risk of such complications. Groomers also take care of trimming nails, which is crucial for preventing joint pain and issues related to overgrown nails.
Promoting Better Hygiene
Grooming is not just about making your pet look pretty; itâs about promoting good hygiene. Regular baths, ear cleaning, and teeth brushing help to remove dirt, bacteria, and unpleasant odors. Cat grooming services, for example, are particularly beneficial for long-haired breeds, which may struggle to keep themselves clean.
Additionally, professional grooming ensures that your pet's fur is cleaned and conditioned using high-quality products designed for their specific skin type. This can significantly reduce the risk of skin irritation, dryness, or allergies.
Improving Your Petâs Comfort
Grooming isn't just about aestheticsâit's about comfort. A matted coat, overgrown nails, or dirty ears can cause significant discomfort for your pet. By investing in professional grooming, you ensure that your pet is free from such discomforts. Groomers are skilled at detangling knots and ensuring that your petâs coat remains manageable and clean.
In addition to physical comfort, dog grooming services often include massages and gentle handling, which can help your dog relax and feel pampered. This kind of care goes a long way in improving your pet's overall emotional well-being.
Why Professional Grooming is Better Than DIY
Access to Professional Tools and Products
One of the key reasons to opt for professional grooming over DIY is the access to specialized tools and products. Professional groomers use high-quality clippers, brushes, and shampoos tailored to your petâs specific needs. Whether your pet has sensitive skin or requires a specific coat treatment, professional groomers have the expertise and resources to ensure optimal care.
Home grooming tools may not be as effective or safe, leading to incomplete grooming or even injury. For example, trimming a dogâs nails without the right tools or technique can cause bleeding or pain, making your pet fearful of future grooming sessions.
Expertise and Experience
Professional groomers have extensive experience handling different breeds and temperaments. Whether you have a nervous cat or an excitable dog, groomers know how to handle each pet calmly and efficiently. Their training allows them to manage the grooming process with minimal stress to your pet.
For dog grooming, this expertise is particularly important, especially for breeds with unique grooming requirements like Poodles or Shih Tzus. Similarly, cat grooming can be tricky, as cats are often more resistant to handling. A professional groomer knows how to keep your cat calm and ensure a safe and efficient grooming session.
Grooming for Specific Breeds
Different breeds have different grooming needs, and professionals are trained to cater to those unique requirements. For example, a professional dog groomer will know exactly how to groom a Golden Retriever to enhance its natural coat, while a cat groomer will understand the grooming needs of a Persian cat with its long, luxurious fur.
Professional grooming ensures that breed-specific grooming standards are met, keeping your pet looking and feeling their best. They will also know when to use specialized products like de-shedding tools or medicated shampoos based on your petâs individual needs.
Additional Services and Benefits of Pet Grooming
Pet Day Care and Grooming Packages
Many grooming salons offer packages that include pet day care services. This is a great way to take care of multiple aspects of your pet's well-being in one go. While your dog or cat is being groomed, they can also enjoy playtime and socialization with other pets. This is particularly useful for pets that suffer from separation anxiety, as it provides them with a stimulating environment while youâre away.
Pet grooming combined with pet day care is not only convenient but also enhances your petâs physical and emotional health. They get to exercise, socialize, and come home looking fresh and clean.
Groomers Can Recommend the Best Pet Products
In addition to grooming services, professional groomers often offer valuable advice on pet care products. Whether it's selecting the best dog food for your pet's dietary needs or choosing durable dog toys and cat toys that are safe and engaging, groomers can guide you in making the right choices for your pet.
Many grooming salons also stock premium pet care products, so you can conveniently purchase items like shampoos, brushes, and even dog food or cat toys after your grooming session.
Groomers Notice Early Signs of Health Issues
Professional groomers are trained to spot early signs of health issues, which might go unnoticed by pet owners. From lumps and bumps to dental problems and skin conditions, groomers often notice subtle changes in your petâs body that could indicate a larger health issue. Early detection of these problems can lead to timely medical intervention, saving you from costly vet bills down the road.
Professional Grooming Contributes to a Happier Pet
Reducing Anxiety and Stress
Regular professional grooming helps pets get accustomed to the process, which reduces anxiety over time. Dogs and cats that are groomed regularly tend to be calmer during the sessions, making the experience more pleasant for both the pet and the owner. This routine grooming can reduce stress levels and make your pet more comfortable in different environments, such as during vet visits or when interacting with strangers.
Strengthening the Bond Between You and Your Pet
Investing in pet grooming also strengthens the bond between you and your pet. A clean, well-groomed pet feels more comfortable and is more likely to engage in play and cuddle sessions. Additionally, knowing that your pet is well-groomed gives you peace of mind, allowing you to focus on spending quality time with them rather than worrying about their hygiene or health.
Conclusion
In summary, professional pet grooming is much more than a luxury; it's an essential part of responsible pet care. From improving your petâs health and hygiene to reducing stress and discomfort, professional grooming offers numerous benefits that make it worth the investment. Whether youâre considering dog grooming, cat grooming, or a full-service grooming and pet day care package, your pet will reap the rewards of regular grooming sessions.
Not only does grooming enhance your petâs physical appearance, but it also contributes to their overall well-being. The expertise, tools, and products that professional groomers provide are invaluable, ensuring that your pet remains happy, healthy, and looking their best. So, the next time you think about skipping a grooming appointment, remember that itâs an investment in your petâs happiness and longevity.

Recognizing the Signs of Kidney Failure in Pets
Kidney failure is a serious condition that can affect pets, often catching owners by surprise. The kidneys play a crucial role in filtering waste from the blood and balancing fluids in the body. When they fail, it can lead to severe health issues. Understanding and recognizing the signs of kidney failure in pets is vital for early intervention and effective treatment. At Tri-County Animal Hospital, we are dedicated to providing the best care and information to ensure your pet's well-being.
Understanding Kidney Failure in Pets
What is Kidney Failure?
Kidney failure, or renal failure, occurs when the kidneys lose their ability to function properly. This condition can be acute (sudden onset) or chronic (developing over time). In both cases, itâs crucial to identify the problem early to manage it effectively.
Types of Kidney Failure: Acute vs. Chronic
Acute Kidney Failure: Often caused by toxins, infections, or severe dehydration, this type of kidney failure comes on suddenly and can be reversible with prompt treatment.
Chronic Kidney Failure: This is a progressive condition often associated with aging, underlying diseases, or genetic factors. Itâs managed over time rather than cured.
Causes of Kidney Failure in Pets
Common Causes in Dogs and Cats
Several factors can lead to kidney failure in pets, including:
Toxins (e.g., antifreeze, certain medications)
Infections (e.g., leptospirosis)
Trauma to the kidneys
Chronic diseases (e.g., diabetes, high blood pressure)
Genetic Predispositions
Some breeds are more prone to kidney issues due to genetic factors. For instance, Persian cats and certain dog breeds like the Shih Tzu and Bull Terrier are more susceptible to kidney diseases.
Environmental Factors
Environmental toxins and poor diet can also contribute to kidney failure. Ensuring a clean, safe environment and a balanced diet is crucial for kidney health.
Early Signs of Kidney Failure
Recognizing the early signs of kidney failure can make a significant difference in the outcome for your pet.
Behavioral Changes
Increased thirst and urination
Decreased appetite
Lethargy or depression
Physical Symptoms to Watch For
Weight loss

Vomiting and diarrhea
Poor coat condition
Advanced Symptoms of Kidney Failure
As the condition progresses, symptoms become more severe and require immediate veterinary attention.
Severe Symptoms Indicating Progression
Severe lethargy
Swelling in limbs (edema)
Seizures or disorientation
When to Seek Emergency Vet Care
If you notice any advanced symptoms, contact Tri-County Animal Hospital immediately. Early intervention can prevent further complications and improve the quality of life for your pet.
Diagnosing Kidney Failure
Veterinary Tests and Procedures
Diagnosing kidney failure typically involves:
Blood tests to check for elevated waste products (BUN, creatinine)
Urinalysis to assess kidney function and detect abnormalities
Imaging (ultrasound or X-rays) to view the kidneys
Importance of Early Detection
Early detection is key to managing kidney failure. Regular check-ups at Tri-County Animal Hospital can help catch the disease in its early stages, allowing for more effective treatment options.
Treatment OptionsÂ
Medical Treatments
Treatment varies depending on the severity and type of kidney failure but may include:
Medications to manage symptoms and slow disease progression
Antibiotics for infections
Medications to control blood pressure
Dietary Changes
Special diets low in phosphorus and protein can help reduce the workload on the kidneys and manage symptoms.
Fluid Therapy
Hydration is crucial. Subcutaneous or intravenous fluids may be administered to help maintain electrolyte balance and hydration.
