her heart drops. she would be lying if she said the thought hadn't crossed her mind before, that she hadn't wondered if v could live his years beside her long-term. after display after display of physical feats not humanly possible, she would have been a fool to ignore that little voice in her head. be prepared for the worst. this could all end in tears.
so while her heart drops, it isn't a very long fall. there's a dull ache in her chest that's been there ever since she saw him heal from a wound that would have felled her. it grows sharper as v claims the weight of such pain, and chiyo shakes her head, fully turning on her side to face him. " no, " she replies, almost as soft as the breeze that rustles the flowers around them. " it's mine, too. i want it to be. do you think i haven't considered this before? i just didn't bring it up because, well... it is scary. "
Tumblr media
she won't say it isn't. she won't put on some brave face, pretend like everything will be fine if they just believe. that isn't how this world works, but chiyo does smile and reach out, tucking fallen hair behind v's ear. " but you know what? i've been able to face a lot of scary things because of you. i won't let you face this one alone. "

Come As You Are
Blake: [To Sun] I still don’t think this is necessary.
Sun: C’mon, babe-a-licious, it’s perfect! You’re the life of the party!
Blake: *Raises eyebrow*
Sun: Okay, well you were the life of the party but that’s not your fault.
Yang: Yeah partner, it’s pretty hard to compete with [gestures at her body] all this!
Blake sighed, choosing to ignore that comment and glanced down at herself. They were at a “come as you are” party celebrating something (though it seemed like with the death of the Grimm Queen and the rapid downspike in Grimm activity, plus a collective loss of intelligence in the Grimm, that people didn’t need a an actual reason to party) and the theme was obvious.
So Blake had eventually caved to Sun’s pleas and was busy wearing what was effectively lingerie. A black bandeau top with a cartoonish hole shaped like a cat head (basically a circle with two triangles about where the ears would be) that left little to the imagination as to the size and shape of her boobs and a short black skirt, a studded belt and hanging from the studded belt was a black cat tail. Her ears were on display, she’d drawn whiskers on her cheeks and blackened the tip of her nose but she’d drawn the line at wearing cat paw gloves and slippers and had opted for a sensible pair of heels.
Sun had basically stripped down to a furry yellow speedo and a pair of flip flops and was carrying a bunch of bananas, his own tail swishing back and forth happily.
Yang on the other hand was technically wearing more but it hardly mattered. She’d somehow managed to fit her excessive curves into a skintight bodysuit that was somewhere between a leotard and a corset, her rump barely fitting in the back while Yang’s breasts were all but spilling out of the top. It was sleeveless, she wore no stockings as she was happy to show off her legs and she wore a pair of four inch black pumps and atop a head filled with lightly curled blonde hair was a pair of bunny ears. And as if to prove her statement right, Yang had had eyes on her all night, not that it mattered to the very taken brawler.
Three guesses what she’s was supposed to be and the first two don’t count, Blake thought.
Blake: Such modesty, Yang.
Yang: Pfft, modesty schmodesty. If you got it--
Blake: Let it all hang out?
Yang: *Snorts* You see anything hanging?
Sun: [Uncomfy] Hey, uh, isn’t Jaune supposed to be here? I mean you two did say you were gonna match outfits.
Yang: Yeah, well, lover boy changed his mind last second and refused to share with his loving girlfriend what he was doing.
Blake: You put him in a headlock and demanded he tell you again?
Yang: *Blushes* No! I haven’t done that in years!
Blake: *Waits*
Yang: [Sighs in defeat] I may have tried to smother him.
Blake:*Crosses arms*
Sun: With your--
Yang: With my tits. [Grumbles] I think I’m using them too much if he’s actually developing an immunity.
Blake: [Pleased] There we go.
Still, Blake couldn’t help but smile at the grumpy and still slightly red faced form of her partner even as Sun coughed and tried to pretend that he suddenly found something interesting about Oscar’s exaggerated farmer costume of heavy brown boots, heavy duty dark blue jeans and the black-and-red plaid shirt he had tucked into his jeans with the sleeves rolled up, one hand carrying an actual hay fork.
Blake looked around and saw Ruby in track shoes, track pants and a sports bra with goggles resting at her hairline. She was busy talking to a group of admirers alongside Weiss, who was in a smart pure white pantsuit with a pale blue blouse beneath that really was no different from her everyday wear as the CEO of the Schnee Dust Company. The only additions being a clipboard and a pair of fake eyeglasses to sell the look, her hair dun up in a bun.
Nora was wearing a horned helm of some sort, sleeveless chainmail that left her biceps open to admire and brown leather bracers on her forearms. She wore studded black leather pants that showed off an equally powerful lower body and furred boots. A red cape was tied around her neck and the young woman had Magnhild over her shoulder and was darting about excitedly, other partygoers ducking to avoid getting smashed over the head by the low hanging hammer.
Blake wasn’t sure what she was supposed to be, but the same went for Ren who wore poofy white pants, black flats (slippers? She didn’t know) and a green jacket that was similar to his first outfit, but he could hide his hands in his sleeves and rather than buttons, there was a length of white rope that tied it together. He was busily following Nora, trying to ensure she didn’t cause any brain damage in her hyperactive state.
Otherwise Neptune was wearing a toga and a golden circlet of equally golden leaves native to Mistral with strappy brown leather sandals. Sage was across the room wearing a ceremonial robe that was unfamiliar to the Menagerie born faunus with a wooden staff and Scarlet was both dressed as a stereotypical pirate and was clearly flirting with Yang’s uncle, who’d been lazy and added a small top hat and wraparound shades and was drinking liberally from a flask.
There were others they knew but the only others she could see at the moment were Fiona Thyme in what looked like wool footie pajamas and Maria Calavera in a hooded cloak, upside down and...doing a kegstand with two men near her age holding her feet, wearing what looked like a gimp suit, the other in slacks, suspenders, a bow tie and nothing else!?
Blake’s head snapped back to Yang who was staring, disturbed, at the same scene. Blake shuddered. Sun shrugged.
Sun: At least the old lady’s having fun.
Yang: Yeah. Kinda wished her fun didn’t make me wanna bleach my eyeballs though. [Grouchily and quiet] Where is he? I swear, if he’s skipping out on me...
Blake: I’m sure he’s just--
A ripple of laughter cut her off and Blake blinked, looked and--
Blake: [Disappointed] Late. *Big sigh* Oh boy.
Sun: [Breaks down into snorting laughter, turns away to avoid potential Yanger]
Yang: [Spins] What’s--
Jaune had arrived, but instead of whatever he’d agreed to wear with Yang he was wearing a large, stereotypical trash can around his torso with his bare arms moving awkwardly at his sides, his bare legs waddling slightly in the clanging and clunking costume. On his brightly grinning head was the top to the trash can, held in place by a strap that went under his chin.
Yang: [Sputtering incoherently]
Ruby: [Distantly] Yang, that’s so mean!
Yang: [Distressed] I didn’t--
Weiss: [Distantly] For shame, Yang Xiao Long.
Yang: [Upset] Nooo, it’s not--
Partygoer: Wow. Poor guy. [To his girlfriend] Please don’t ever do that to me. [Girlfriend hugs his arm]
Yang: [More upset] I swear--
Scarlet: [Finally looks over] *Squawking laughter*
Yang: [Even more upset] Stop, it’s seriously not--
Qrow: [Disappointedly] Firecracker. We raised you better.
Yang: [Can’t decide whether to cry or explode; pouts at Jaune while trying to glare] Baby, we talked about this!
Jaune: [Happily smiling] You talked. I ignored. Besides, everybody’s perfectly in character! Who am I to deny my nature!?
Yang: *Unhappy teakettle noises*

The Apartment: part 5
Tumblr media
▪️for parts 1-4, click here
pairing: Kuroo Tetsurou x fem! reader
rating/warnings: swearing, angst (?)
synopsis: You knew that living with your three best friends, Kuroo, Oikawa, and Bokuto, would be a wild ride. It’s never a dull moment with those three. Let’s just hope you can keep your huge crush on Kuroo a secret when he is only a room away.
a/n: hi friends✨i hope you all are doing well:)) just a friendly reminder to eat something today and stay hydrated 💕 as always, my inbox is open for anything and everything so feel free to reach out:) and the taglist for this fic is still open if you’d like to join✨ okay, enjoy xx
Five: best friends
“Okay do you have all your bags?” You asked. Bokuto nodded, holding a backpack and small suitcase.
“Yes Y/N.”
“And your phone? And your pillow, because I know you hate hotel ones. And-“
“Y/N calm down you’re going into ’mom mode’,” said Kuroo. You rolled your eyes.
“I just wanna make sure he has a good trip.”
“Akaashi will take care of him, don't worry,” smiled Kuroo.
“Do you not want me to have a good trip?” pouted Oikawa. You put your arm around him and smiled.
“Oikawa, I wouldn’t mind if you didn’t come back.” You joked.
“I fucking hate you,” he growled, pushing you away. You laughed and ruffled his hair.
“I love you both okay, now get out of here, Iwa and Akaashi are probably already outside,” you smiled. The four of you gathered for a group hug. Oikawa was off to his mini getaway with Iwa and Bokuto was joining Akaashi for his writers conference. The apartment would be just you and Kuroo.
“Hey, Y/N,” called Bokuto. He pulled you aside and whispered something in your ear.
“Remember what I told you.”
You sighed, remembering well what Bokuto had told you those days ago. You nodded.
“Farewell my lovely apartment! You two better not burn the place down while I’m gone,” said Oikawa.
“No promises,” smiled Kuroo. He pushed Oikawa out the door as Bokuto followed.
“Bye you two, we love you!” You cheered. Kuroo shut the door behind Oikawa and Bokuto, leaving you alone with him.
“You act like they’re never coming back,” laughed Kuroo.
“Not my fault I’ll miss them. I don’t remember the last time I went more than a week without them,” you explained. Kuroo nodded.
“Wanna grab some food after class?” Asked Kuroo. Your face felt warm.
“Uh yeah that sounds good.” You and Kuroo both had a lecture together today for your marketing course.
“Just give me 10 minutes and we can head to class,” you said. Kuroo nodded. You went inside your room and saw that Oikawa had left something on your bed. You picked it up and it read: “I suggest you use this before it expires”. You turned the card over, and saw that it was a coupon for 10% off a purchase at Party City. You groaned and threw the card away.
“Dickhead,” you mumbled.
“Who, me?” said Kuroo. You jumped.
“Kuroo oh my god you have to stop sneaking up on me like that,” you ordered. Kuroo laughed and sat down on your bed.
“Hurry up I don’t wanna be late.” You sighed and grabbed your jacket and shoes from your closet and slipped them on.
“Fine then let’s go.”
~
You and Kuroo walked a couple blocks to campus. Your lecture hall wasn’t too far away.
“A 3 hour lecture never gets easier,” you sighed. Kuroo patted your shoulder.
“Come on Y/N, don’t you just love getting all that knowledge thrown at you.” You rolled your eyes.
“Marketing is boring, even a nerd like you could agree,” you joked.
“Okay fair,” smiled Kuroo. The two of you reached the lecture hall and took a seat next to each other.
“Hi Kuroo! Mind if I sit here?” a voice said. You turned to see a girl standing next to Kuroo.
“Oh Calie, hi, yeah sure,” said Kuroo. The girl joyfully sat down next to Kuroo, causing you to clench your fists.
“Uh Calie, this is my friend Y/N, Y/N this is Calie, we have organic chemistry together,” explained Kuroo. The girl flashed you a dazzling smile. Great, she's pretty and smart. You shook her hand firmly.
“Wait aren’t you guys roommates too? That must be so fun living with someone like Kuroo,” giggled Calie. You gave her a sarcastic smile. I already hate this bitch.
“Yeah we’ve been friends forever so I definitely get my fair share of Kuroo.”
“Well you’re probably so sick of him, mind if I borrow him after the lecture?” She asked. Calie wrapped her hand around Kuroo’s bicep. You had to stop yourself from beating the shit out of her.
“Well actually-“ you began.
“Sure that sounds fun. You don’t mind right, Y/N?” said Kuroo. Is he being serious right now?
“So I’m supposed to grab dinner by myself?” You whispered, without thinking. Kuroo’s eyes widened. Calie gasped.
“You can come with us! I’d hate to leave you all alone,” She smiled.
“Yeah come with us,” said Kuroo.
“No no it’s fine, you two have fun. I’d rather be alone anyway,” you muttered. Before Kuroo could reply, your professor had walked in and began his lecture.
~
Your lecture felt longer than normal. Probably because all you could focus on was Calie’s giggles as she whispered with Kuroo throughout the whole 3 hours. Kuroo was always good with the ladies. His confident nature caused girls to be drawn towards him. Yes, you liked him too but you liked all of him, not just the surface level of Kuroo.
You tried to contain your annoyance with Calie and Kuroo. It was obvious she was flirting with him.
“See you next week,” said your professor as he wrapped up his lecture. You got up from your seat and began packing up your things. You didn’t look at Kuroo and headed right out the door.
You began walking back to your apartment when you heard Kuroo call after you.
“Wait Y/N-chan!” You turned around to face him.
“Are you sure you don’t want to hang with me and Calie? She’s really nice once you get to know her,” he said. You almost rolled your eyes.
“No it’s fine. I promised I’d FaceTime Oikawa now anyway,” you lied. Kuroo raised an eyebrow.
“Well if you say so. I’ll grab dinner with you tomorrow, okay?”
“Yeah sure. Make sure you have your key to the apartment or else I’m locking you out,” you said. Kuroo laughed and nodded.
“Bye Y/N!” cheered Calie. You gave her a wave and watched as Kuroo ran back towards her.
-
You walked back to your apartment, upset. Kuroo had every right to hang out with other girls but that didn’t mean it didn’t hurt. It was just another reminder that Kuroo might not share the same feelings as you.
The apartment felt weird being so empty. All dark and quiet. You threw your keys on the counter and plopped onto the couch. You checked your phone and saw a plethora of texts from Oikawa.

You set your phone down and checked in the kitchen for anything worth eating. You weren’t in the mood to go out anymore.
Rice. We have rice. Well, rice it is.
You took out the rice cooker and began to prepare your sad dinner.
Why didn’t I just go with them?
As the rice cooked, you sat down on the couch and turned on the TV. You put on ‘Gilmore Girls’, wishing your friends were there to watch it with you.
~
It was late. Close to 11pm. Kuroo still wasn’t home. You laid on the couch, basking in your loneliness. A little dramatic yes but you hated being without your friends. It was a weird concept that they had friends beside you.
You heard keys jingle outside the door and you felt a wave of comfort come over you, knowing it had to be Kuroo. You got up from the couch and peaked at the door.
“I was starting to wonder what happened to you…” your voice trailed off when you saw that Kuroo wasn’t alone.
“Hey Y/N! Oh my gosh your apartment is so cute!” said Calie. Your jaw dropped and you looked over at Kuroo.
Your expression had to be screaming: “are you fucking kidding me right now!?”
“Oh uh thanks,” you muttered.
“Is it cool if Calie stays for a bit? Her roommates are having people over and she doesn’t know them too well,” explained Kuroo. Hmm I wonder what that’s like.
“You don’t have to ask me, it’s your apartment too,” you said plainly. Kuroo raised a brow.
“Just checking…”
Calie walked around your small apartment, admiring all the decorations that you had up.
“Aw isn’t this the cutest photo!” She said. She picked up a picture of you and Kuroo. It was when you had gotten dressed up together to take graduation pictures. Your smile was the brightest it’s ever been. Holding your diploma as Kuroo wrapped his arm around you. In the background of the photo you could see a faint image of Oikawa and Bokuto.
“Yeah I love that picture,” Kuroo smiled. Kuroo took the photo from Calie’s hand and looked at it.
“Best friends, right?” He looked at you. Your heart sank.
“Yup, best friends,” you whispered with a dull smile. Kuroo smiled and showed Calie to his room. You tried not to react. You walked over to your room, locked the door, and curled up onto your bed.
Is best friends all we are ever gonna be?

The Bunny, The Decoy and the Apex Games #6
AO3: https://archiveofourown.org/works/32034451/chapters/79916935
Summary:
Mornings were usually uninteresting and routine for you on the drop ship. Not with Octavio and Elliott around, however.
Chapter 1 / Chapter 2 / Chapter 3 / Chapter 4 / Chapter 5
————————————————————————–
You didn’t know when you’d fallen asleep the previous night. The last thing you could remember were the sounds of Octavio clicking away on his keyboard as he played some fast-paced parkour game.
Opening your eyes that morning, the last thing you expected to see was a head of green hair poking out from under the covers right next to you in bed but lo and behold, there it was. Out of surprise, you shouted angrily “Octavio, what the hell! I didn’t say you could sleep in my bed!” as you quickly leaped out of bed. Thankfully, you’d not changed out of your day clothes before falling asleep.
Octavio slowly and groggily sat up on the bed, rubbing the sleep from his eyes as he said “Where was I supposed to sleep then? I tried sleeping on the floor but it was hard and the carpet was all scratchy.” He looked up at you with bleary eyes and his short green hair sticking straight up as if he’d been electrocuted in his sleep. You couldn’t help but think that sleepy Octavio looked pretty cute, especially with the plush bunny cuddled up close to him.
You tried to push those thoughts out of your mind by focusing on the problem at hand. “Well, I don’t know. Anywhere but in my bed! I’m sure if you asked, the Syndicate would lend you a mattress or something,” you suggested, folding your arms across your chest.
Octavio thought about it for a few moments before he responded “But someone would see me carrying the mattress in here and then, they’ll wonder why we don’t want to share a bed, yknow?” You wished you could have thought of something smart to say in response but you knew Octavio was right. The other Legends would definitely suspect something.
“Fine. But they should have finished fixing that air conditioner by now so it doesn’t matter anyway,” you grumbled as you gathered up some clothes to change into before heading for the showers, leaving Octavio to fall back onto the bed for another 20 minutes of blissful sleep. When you returned, Octavio was propped up into a sitting position on the bed with pillows placed behind his back for extra comfort, typing away furiously on his phone. You sat down at your desk to do your hair and makeup and pulled out a mirror from the drawer, setting it down on the surface. When you heard Octavio throw his phone down with a small groan of annoyance, you asked “You alright, Octavio?”
Octavio picked up his phone again and swiped on its screen for a bit before offering it to you, saying “Look what one of the assholes working at the Syndicate texted me.” You hesitated before taking his phone. Most people preferred to hold their phone up for others when they wanted to show them something. Privacy reasons, you guessed. Yet, here was Octavio just unconditionally handing it to you. No warnings to not swipe to the right or anything. You felt weirdly trusted.
The text message read: ‘Unfortunately, it appears as if the plumber requires some special parts to be ordered in order to fix the air conditioner in your dormitory. The parts will unfortunately take up to 10 days to arrive. I apologize for any inconvenience caused.'
Your mouth fell open in surprise. You were going to have to share a bed with Octavio for another 10 WHOLE DAYS? You didn’t know how to react to this news. You handed Octavio back his phone, and forced a smile onto your face as you explained that you had plans to meet Ajay and Natalie for breakfast, and you would see him later. “W-Wait, Y/N!,” Octavio had begun to say but the door had already clicked shut behind you as you began making your way to the cafeteria.
The ladies of the Apex Games often got together once a week for breakfast to catch up and enjoy some much needed time with the girls. That day, the only one missing from the group was Loba who apparently had an important appointment she had to attend. Once you’d grabbed a plate of scrambled eggs and two slices of toast from the steaming hot chafing dishes, you took your usual seat between Ajay and Natalie.
You’d noticed that there was a strange silence that descended upon the group when you arrived and it suddenly came to you that this was the first ladies’ breakfast since your ‘relationship’ with Octavio went public. You mentally braced yourself for any prying questions as you tucked into your food.
Natalie was the first to break the silence. “So...Y/N, how are things going between you and Octavio?,” she asked sweetly before taking a sip from her mug of coffee. Her eyes had a little glimmer in it that told you she was hungry for any information you would offer. You could almost sense the anticipation in the air and took another bite of toast just to give yourself some time to think of an answer.
“We’re good. It’s kinda hard to keep up with him but I mean, I knew that going into it,” you said with what you hoped was a convincing shy smile. Only when you saw Ajay and Ramya’s shared eyebrow raises did you spot the possible cheeky double entendre of your words. You were just going to launch into a desperate babble to explain what you actually meant but it was probably just as well that you were suddenly interrupted by the appearance of none other than Elliott.
Elliot wore his usual charming smile as he looked around the table at everyone present, pausing for a moment when his gaze landed on you. “Good morning, ladies! You’re all looking wonderful today. Mind if the great Mirage joins you for a bit?,” Elliott asked as he put his hands on his hips, expectantly waiting for someone to invite him to sit down.
“No, Elliott. Women only today,” Renee said bluntly, not one to try and protect anyone’s feelings. Elliott held a hand up to his heart, making a face as if he had been wounded by Renee’s statement. She merely rolled her eyes as she turned to look at the other women present to see what they thought of Elliott joining their meal. Unfortunately for the ‘great Mirage’, most of them were in agreement with Renee.
Elliott laughed the rejection off and said casually “Alright, alright! You ladies need your space, I get it.” He started to walk in the direction of the cafeteria’s entrance but suddenly stopped and quickly came back to the table you were at, excitedly exclaiming “I almost forgot! I’m gonna make some pork chops for dinner tonight, anyone wanna try some?”
Everyone knew about Elliott’s famous pork chop recipe that his mom had created. It was supposedly so tender that the meat would just melt in your mouth. There was no turning down this offer, and everyone present at the table were up for a taste. Pleased at how well his offer was received, Elliott seemed to puff up in pride. He looked pointedly at you and said with a wink “Once you taste it, Y/N, you’re gonna wish you were dating me instead. I bet Octavio can’t make pork chops like I can.”
You couldn’t believe your ears. Did Elliot actually say what you thought he said or were you just starting to go insane from all the pining you did? You stared motionless from the utter shock as Elliott strutted out of the cafeteria like a delighted peacock. Ajay nudged you in the ribs with her elbow and asked with an amazed smile on her face “What was that?! Was Elliott hitting on ya? What love potion have ya got on these boys?”
“I-I’m sure it’s nothing! You know what Elliott’s like. He’s always flirting with literally anyone who’ll listen,” you laughed, waving Ajay’s suggestions away. Secretly, you wished that she was right. Maybe you really did stand a chance with Elliott. You struggled to focus for the rest of the meal and even on your walk back to your dorm, your mind was far off in the stars.
You stared blankly at the door to your dorm for a moment, wondering when on earth you’d gotten back here before turning the doorknob and opening it. Octavio was nowhere to be seen. His things were still scattered about your room and the bedsheets were a tangled mess but no green haired man. However, you spotted a mound of blankets and pillows bundled up at the foot of your bed which was suspiciously wriggling.
You approached the bundle cautiously and reached your leg out towards it to give it a gentle poke with your shoe. Immediately, Octavio popped his head out from amongst the blankets and pillows with a surprised look. “What are you doing down there? If you’re trying to make a pillow fort, that’s the wrong way to do it,” you raised an eyebrow with a confused frown.
“I was just trying to test out if this would be comfy!,” Octavio explained as he tried to hold up as many of the blankets and pillows as he could at once, dropping a few in the process. You must have still looked confused because he continued quickly “Well, you didn’t want me to sleep in your bed so I figured I’d try and make my own down here so you wouldn’t get angry at me.”
You instantly felt regret at having left so abruptly earlier that morning. What had gone through Octavio’s head to make him think that you’d get angry at him for something that he couldn’t control? So much so that he was ready to sleep on the floor like a pet dog. “Octavio, I’m sorry for getting upset at you this morning. You’re welcome to share my bed till they manage to fix that leaky air conditioner in your room, I’m not going to let you sleep on the floor like that,” you said firmly, gesturing at the blankets and pillows.
“Really?! Oh, you’re the best! Thank you, Y/N,” Octavio shouted in delight as he proceeded to leap up from the floor and onto the bed. You shook your head as you laughed at the sight. Octavio got so excited over the smallest things. After wriggling about for a few minutes on the bed, Octavio finally clambered out of bed and said “I’m hitting the practice range! Wanna come?”
You didn’t have anything else planned for the day so you agreed on the condition that he wasn’t about to try launching grenades off his jump pad again. Last time, it’d almost hit you if it wasn’t for your quick reflexes. Octavio laughed and said cheekily “Hmm, I’ll think about it. Come on, come on! Let’s get going!”
Octavio dashed out of the dormitory that you two now shared. For the time being, at least. You quickly chased after him, not wanting to left too far behind. Was this what life would be like for you now? Little did you know, there was still a lot more to come.

post credits. shin ryujin
note: very dramatic very cliche not very good
summary: when did ryujin start paying more attention to you instead of yerim?
wc: 2.4k
Tumblr media
taking a sip of her water, ryujin’s eyes wandered to the stands, jealousy spiking when she saw you talking animatedly with yerim
she dropped the plastic bottle more aggressively than needed.
she tsked, and leaned down on one knee to tie her shoe, not noticing yuna jogging up to her, also looking at you and yerim.
“i think you’re losing,” yuna said without much thought.
“i am not,” ryujin huffed, “i’m just giving (name) a chance,”
yuna looked over at the two sitting on the stands, watching the way yerim threw her head back and laughed at something you said, “no, i think you’re losing,”
ryujin huffed again, “shut up,”
“you know, i don’t think i will,” yuna smiled brightly, making ryujin smile as well, “c’mon let’s go change,”
the two girls got their bags and began making their way to the changing room, they walked past you and yerim on the way, going unnoticed until they were halfway through the door.
“oh! ryujin!” yerim called out, getting off the stand, you in tow, “did you still wanna go to the movies tonight?”
“yes,” ryujin smiled brightly, smirking subtly at how annoyed you looked.
“great!” yerim grinned, “would it be okay if (name) came?”
ryujin’s face fell, while a smirk grew on yours
it both amused and annoyed ryunjin how oblivious yerim was
you and ryujin had been competing over her for almost 4 years and she had no idea
or maybe she did, and was just playing the both of you
no, yerim wasn’t like that, she couldn't even tell the cafeteria lady she didn’t like beans
this was how it always went; you or ryujin invited her somewhere and she invited the other or another friend
ryujin was about to say no, but the hopeful loom on yerim’s face made it hard, “sure,” she sputtered, taking no mind to the surprised look on your face, “why not,”
“great!” yerim grabbed your hand and ran off with a goodbye to the two girls
ryujin glared at you when you waved teasingly to her and said “see you later”
“i hate (name),”
“sure, you do,” yuna rolled her eyes, and continued to the changing room
“they’re so annoying,” ryujin continued, walking after her friend, “why do anybody even like them? seriously,”
yuna hummed uninterested
“i mean yeah, okay, (name)’s funny, smart, nice, and kinda of attractive from certain angles, i guess, but that’s it,”
“yeah?” yuna wasn’t the slightest bit interested in her friends rant, having heard it one to many times
“okay, they’re really attractive, but c’mon being annoying should outweigh that,”
ryujin continued her rant all the way to the changing room and while they changed into their uniforms
she only first ran out of things about you by the time they got to the bus stop
“ryujin?”
“yeah?”
“are you sure you like yerim?” yuna dared to ask
ryujin furrowed her eyebrows, “yes? i’ve liked her since the fourth grade, you know that,”
“i mean like, is it yerim you like?”
“yes?” ryujin’s confusion showed clearly on her face, “who else would i like?”
“no one, no one, just a question,”
yuna decided not to tell ryujin it wasn’t yerim she liked, wanting her to figure it out herself
“okay?” ryujin could tell yuna was up to something
“so what movie are you watching?” yuna changed the subject before ryujin could ask
“the notebook,” ryujin groaned, “they’re playing classics this week,”
“you asked her to watch the notebook, a movie known for being romantic and one couples watch, and she asked if (name) could come along?” yuna tried to hold her laughter but failed when ryujin shot her a glare
ryujin punched yuna on the arm, “shut up,”
when ryujin got home, she was quick to change into something cute to wear, before sprinting out the door again and walking to the movie theater
she had agreed with yerim to meet outside the theater and walk in together
well, meet yerim and you
ryujin shivered at the thought of you being there and being all close with yerim, like you usually were
ryujin hated seeing you with being all cuddly and flirty with yerim
she hated seeing yerim make you all happy
she shook her head and sat down outside the theater, hugging her jacket close to her
she checked the time on her phone
almost 18.30
the movie began in less than 30 minutes and you and yerim where nowhere in sight
maybe you ditched her?
maybe you convinced yerim to do something else and leave ryujin alone in the dark?
no
yerim would call her if she couldn’t make it, and you simply weren’t that kind of person
ryujin bit her bottom lip nervously, checking her phone again
no missed called and no texts
(only from the group chat she had with yuna, chaeryoung, hyunjin, and hyejoo)
she sighed, putting her phone in her bag, not noticing two pairs of footsteps coming towards her
“ryujin!” yerim shouted happily, making ryujin’s head snap up, a smile growing on her face
the smile faltered, thought, when she noticed yerim’s hand holding yours
she shook it off her and hugged yerim back, “hey, you made it,”
“yeah, sorry we’re late,” yerim apologized, “someone couldn’t find their shoes,”
“your dog took them!” you defend yourself with a laugh, making yerim laugh as well
you were at yerim’s? ryujin thought
why were you at yerim’s house?
one part of ryujin, the part consisting of self hatred and doubt, told her you were making out or something
maybe you asked yerim to be your girlfriend?
maybe you finally told yerim about your feelings for her?
and now you were a couple?
the thought made ryujin feel sick
ryujin’s train of thought got cut off by yerim’s chippy voice
“c’mon the movies gonna start soon, and i wanna watch previews!”
you took yerim’s hand and walked into the theater
yerim grabbed ryujin’s hand and pulled her with
ryujin didn’t have time to think about yerim holding her hand, her focus was purely on your hand holding yerim’s
as expected yerim sat in between you and ryujin
at some point while buying way too many sweets, yerim had let go of ryujin’s hand
but you hadn’t let go of yerim’s, and she didn’t seem to mind
in fact, she intertwined your fingers
it made ryujin want to throw up
yuna had been right (something unusual) earlier when she said ryujin was losing
halfway into the movie, yerim had leaned onto your shoulder, and even cried into you
yerim had cried the most out of the three of you
her mascara had ran down her cheeks, leaving her with black streaks on her face
she went to the restroom to try and fix it, leaving you and ryujin in the lobby
you were munching on some of the candy and ryujin was pretending to be busy on her phone
“you look nice,”
ryujin almost choked on her own spit, “what?”
“i said, you look nice,” you smiled nonchalantly to her, unaware of how much of a ruckus you were causing inside her
“i- what?- thank you?” she sputtered
you chuckled, “i know we’re not friends because we both like yerim and all that, but i don’t hate you, you know,”
ryujin didn’t know what to say, so she settled for nodding awkwardly
luckily yerim came out and dragged both of you out of the theater, before you could say anything else
“let’s go!”
your hand brushed against ryujin’s when yerim dragged you outside, making ryujin feel like she was on fire
she felt it even long after it happened
she didn’t think anything of it
the next morning it took ryujin longer than usual to get ready for school
she could almost see you and yerim all cuddled together, whispering in the back of science class
it filled ryujin with jealousy, jealousy she didn’t dare to say out loud
chaeryoung greeted her when she got to the school, a bright smile on her face
the glow surrounding chaeryoung made ryujin smile
“good morning!” chaeryoung greeted
“morning,”
ryujin really didn’t want to enter the school, fearing she might see you and yerim together
but chaeryoung had a fast grip on her hand and forced her inside
it took ryujin approximately 2 seconds to spot you and yerim after walking to class
you were sitting in the back giggling over something
probably something stupid
ryujin stood still in the doorway, unable to move her eyes from you
the grip she had on her backpack strap, tightened
“why are you just standing there?” hyunjin came up behind ryujin, nearly giving her a heart attack, “go in. you’re blocking the way,”
hyunjin pushes ryujin inside and to her chair, taking place beside her
“what’s up with you?” hyunjin asked, “you seem very out of it,”
ryujin barely heard what hyunjin was saying, too deep in her own thoughts
“hey! shin ryujin,”
ryujin was close to jumping out of her chair, “what?!”
“what is wrong with you?” hyunjin spoke slowly, like she was talking to a child
ryujin glared are her, only to be met with an eye roll
“dude,”
“i don’t know,” ryujin rubbed her eyes with the ball of her hand, before laying her down on her desk, face first
“that’s depressing,” hyunjin muttered
she looked around the classroom to see if she could figure out what made ryujin so upset
her eyes landed on you and yerim still giggling together, “ah,”
ryujin, already knowing hyunjin figured it out, groaned, “yeah, ah,”
“you’re jealous,” hyunjin concluded
ryujin’s head shot up, “no, i’m not. okay fine, maybe. stop looking at me like that, it’s weird,”
hyunjin snorted, “why are you so jealous? didn’t you watch a movie with yerim yesterday?”
“i did, and she invited (name),”
hyunjin snorted again, this time trying to hold her laughter in
“you can laugh, yuna did too,”
with that hyunjin burst out laughing, attracting some attention from the other students (you and yerim not included)
“haha, yes, it’s very funny,” ryujin rolled her eyes
hyunjin was close to tears
“it’s really not that funny,”
when hyunjin finally composed herself, the teacher had arrived and the lesson began
ryujin found it hard to concentrate
you and yerim sat diagonally behind her and hyunjin, which meant she could her the two of you mess around
it wasn’t loud or anything that actually bothered anybody else but ryujin
her grip on her pencil was tight enough for her knuckles to turn white
your giggles were incredibly loud in her mind, and it was driving her insane
without thinking about it, she stood up and faced you and yerim
she made eye contact with you and shouted, “WOULD YOU SHUT UP?!”
after shouting she realized the situation, making her face go red
she ran out of the classroom, leaving everybody stunned
your teacher called after her but she was far gone out the door
before anybody else could react yerim ran out the door after her friend
ryujin made it into a janitor closet
she closed the door behind her and slid down the wall opposite the door, hiding her face in her hands
“why did i do that?” she mumbled to herself, “what’s wrong with you?”
“ryujin?” yerim knocked on the door, “is that you?”
“would you believe me if i said no?”
yerim giggled, “not really. can i come in?”
“i guess,” ryujin didn’t look up as yerim opened the door and sat down beside her after closing it
“you okay?” yerim put her hand on ryujins arm, slowly running it up and down
“i don’t know,”
ryujin didn't feel anything as yerim touched her
not like she did when…
ryujins eyes widened as she looked at yerim in shock
oh no
ryujin liked you
not yerim
yerim was confused, “ryujin, what?”
“i’m gonna,” she stood up, “i’m gonna go, now,”
ryujin ran out of the janitors room and outside the school
she kept running until she got to a secluded spot near the lake
taking her uniform jacket off, spreading it out on the ground, she sat down on it, bringing her knees to her chest
she stared at the peaceful lake, thoughts swirling around her head
gulping down, she thought — about you, about yerim, about her feelings
“do i like yerim?” she asked herself; she found it easier when talking out loud
“yerim is a great person; she’s sweet, kind, pretty, funny, a great friend.
“do i want her to be my girlfriend, thought? do i want to be her girlfriend?”
ryujin was quiet as she thought, she could hear birds chirping happily away
lying down on her jacket, face towards the sky, she let out a big sigh, “no, i don’t want to be in a relationship with choi yerim; the girl i’ve liked since i was like 12,”
she let out a loud groan, covering her face with her hands, “do i like (name)?” she muttered into her hands
she thought about you — about your bright, pretty, moon shaped smile
about your sparkling, beautiful eyes
about how you always make everyone laugh — make them feel comfortable and safe
about how you, despite knowing how to be incredibly confident, could be shy, something she had always adored
the more she thought about you, the more clear the answer
“yes,” she took a deep breath in, “i like (name),”
lying under the sun, hearing the birds sing, she took time to let the realization sink in
“okay, i like (name),”
she sat up, “no big deal, it’s just the same person i’ve been lowkey fighting with for almost 4 years,”
she stood up, brushed her clothes off and picked up her jacket, “fuck, my stuff,” she slapped her forehead
ryujin walked back to the school with small steps, praying her bag would magically appear in her hand
it didn’t, and she made it to the school
students were on their way out of the school, happily making their way, not paying attention to ryujin
well, until hyejoo spotted her and told the others
“ryujin!” yuna was with her in a heartbeat, the rest close behind
hyunjin handed ryujin her backpack with a tight smile
ryujin thanked her with a small smile
she looked at her friends and noticed they all avoided eye contact
squinting her eyes, she asked, “why do you all look like something terrible happened?”
she turned to yuna, “yuna? wanna tell me what’s going on?”
yuna shook her head quickly and slapped her hands over her mouth
“chaeryoung?”
chaeryoung made the mistake of look towards the front door of the school, making ryujin do the same
she wished she didn’t
then she wouldn’t have seen your lips lock with yerim’s

I Want Candy
Pairing: Pale/Reader
Word Count: 1953
Year: (after Raw, before Vacation)
A/N: This one is a little bit sad but nothing awful. Extensive discussion of Pale being a father (not related to reader) consistent with character’s backstory. Mostly plot, sorry! Mentions of condom-tampering by Pale’s ex.
Tumblr media
You’d noticed Pale buying things that were a little out of the ordinary for him. Twizzlers? Sure he’d bought them once or twice when he was stressed, but pop rocks? Skittles? Fun dip?
Then you noticed the packing tape, the little boxes he’d been buying. Most curious of all, sheets of thick cardboard. And marbles.
One night, you got up for a drink of water and found him in the kitchen, bent over the island as he measured out some cardboard.
“Pale?”
“Jesus fuck!” Pale breathed your name as he turned around and saw it was you. You leaned to the side, trying to see around him.
“Look, I didn’t wanna say anything but... What’s happening?”
Pale cleared his throat and stretched out his back, leaning side to side. Must have been leaning over for a while.
“Uh, you remember my kid, right?”
You nodded.
“With Halloween coming up, he’s not allowed any candy and I thought I’d send him some. Not fair if all his friends get to go trick or treating and he doesn’t, you know? His mom, she’s uhh... Not a very nice lady. Kid deserves a chance to get all shot up with sugar now and again. Part of growin’ up.”
You squinted, eyes adjusting to the light in the kitchen after being asleep for a while.
“So the marbles?”
Pale nodded and gestured for you to look. “I put false bottoms in all the little boxes I send him. The post office doesn’t give a shit because it’s clearly candy right? Hell, even if it was heroin, they’d probably let it through. Anything going New York, Miami ain’t worth their trouble. So, the story is that my kid is having a marbles phase. But the good marbles are the ones that aren’t common in Miami. Gotta come from Canada, that part’s true. So I get them shipped here cos they don’t ship Toronto to Miami, only Toronto across the border. Also true.”
“Hang on, so your kid’s having a marbles phase?”
“Nah, that part’s bullshit. He’s smart, made that bit up, found a company in Toronto that makes good marbles, according to his friends, now he’s got a perfect excuse for getting a bunch of packages from me. Marbles go in and out real fast, who knew?”
You smiled and rested your head on Pale’s back. “He’s like you then, huh? Smart, resourceful. Gonna have to watch out when he gets old enough to work in the restaurant industry.”
He turned around and wrapped you in his arms. “You think I’m smart?”
“Mhm. Einstein level shit, all the logistics you do.”
Pale let you go and turned back to the packages. “Been doing it for a week or two now so he can start a decent stockpile under his bed or wherever the fuck.”
“You wanna send him a big one for Halloween?”
Pale worked for a moment, considering what you’d said.
“I don’t know how we’d get away with it. Mom’s Catholic, she isn’t big into Halloween. Devil’s work and all that. Apparently she only likes holy spirits, not just the regular spirit schmucks. Poor guys. Reckon they get that kinda discrimination from a lotta folks.”
You chuckled tiredly, then yawned. “I gotta get back to bed. Do this during the day, alright? Ain’t gotta hide from me.”
“Baby,” Pale turned around and took your hand. “It ain’t that. Well, I didn’t wanna upset you by talking ‘bout her, but it ain’t that. Angel, I just ain’t got time during the day. By the time I get home, my eyes are shot from being up so long. Hands are shakin’ from holding a knife, or grippin’ the steering wheel. Gotta rest for a bit before I’m good to go again.”
Sadness fell over your face, you felt it. Your eyebrows drawing together, frown pulling at your chin. “Pale...” You stroked your hands over his hair, gathering the hair at his temples and pushing it back.
He kissed your palms. “C’mon, I’ll come back to bed with ya. You can cut the things for the bottom of the boxes, you got littler hands that’ll actually fit in the fuckin’ scissors.”
**
“Pale, you know the thing you did before you met me? Before you had your current job?”
“Can’t say it out loud, dollface, but yeah.”
“Did you ever do it in Miami?”
“Yeah, real good at it too. Cops are slow over there. Fuckin’ alcoholics.”
“Are there any guys you trust enough to let them near your house?”
“Yeah. Couple of guys came over a few times, said they were friends from work. Trusted ‘em with my life.”
“Any one in particular come to mind?”
Without skipping a beat, Pale nodded. “Ethan.”
You nodded.
“What are you getting at, huh?” Pale glanced at you for a moment, away from the road.
“Just thinkin’. What if we made that Halloween package for your son, got Ethan to deliver it early in the morning or something? Leave it somewhere he knew to look?”
Pale was quiet for a while, then slowly began to nod. “That’ll work. I can call Ethan, tell him there’s a package I wanna send to the house. He won’t ask questions. I’d do the same for him. Then call the kid and tell him where to look.”
**
It was childlike, the fun you had with Pale putting the gift together, assembling candy in all the colors of the rainbow into an altogether excessive box. You only wished you could see the look on his face when he opened it. The thought sent a twang of pain through your chest. If you wanted to see his reaction, how bad did Pale wanna see it?
“Pale?”
“Yeah?”
“When’s the last time you saw him?”
Pale drummed his fingers across the coffee table, expressing a guilt he couldn’t name out loud, allowing the feeling to bubble out of him through his hands. Maybe that’s why he liked the piano.
“When I left Miami.”
You swallowed and nodded. It wasn’t the right time to ask.
“Terrible dad, huh?” Pale was turning inward, caving into his ribcage so he felt like he didn’t have to look at you.
“Pale, terrible dads wouldn’t be sitting here, making a beautiful little box of candy to send all the way to Miami. A terrible dad wouldn’t be staying up all night shipping candy hidden in boxes of marbles.”
You shuffled across the carpet and rested your head on your shoulder and your hands on his thigh.
“Thanks angel. Just a terrible husband then?”
You huffed a laugh and kissed his cheek. “Yeah. I’ll let you have that. I’m sure she’s a worse wife than you’re a bad husband. I guess good husbands don’t fuck girls from Manhattan.”
“Girl from Manhattan,” Pale corrected. “If she had any lady parts left she’d be doing the same thing, someone from Jacksonville. Fuckin’ shame they’ve all turned to dust.”
You laughed and turned your face into Pale’s shoulder. “What’s his name? What’s he like?”
Pale shook his head. “I’m not a good dad, never had the whole moment where I fell in love with him. He’s alright-looking, mostly looks like her, but he’s got my nose I think. He’s a math kid. His name’s Joseph, I call him Joe. Typical of her to call him something like Joseph. Surprised she didn’t go with a saint name.”
He lifted the box. “Jesus, this is heavy. I think we’re done. Wanna help me do the ribbon?”
You nodded and pressed on the lid, hovering your finger over the ribbon as he tied the bow.
“I love you Pale.”
He looked at you when he finished adjusting the bow. “Yeah?”
You nodded. He nodded.
“I love you too. Know I don’t say it often enough, but I do. Love you more than anyone else I’ve ever known. And, uh, it’s nice. Not doing Halloween and everything alone. It’s hard sometimes when kids come knocking and there’s a kid with a little mop ‘a hair that looks like him.”
“I wanna kiss you so bad,” You breathed.
He smiled and ran the pad of his thumb over your chin. “The girl from Manhattan wants to kiss me huh?”
You nodded, smiling like a lovestruck fool. Smiling as a lovestruck fool.
“C’mere then.”
**
brrrrriiiiiiiiiinngggg
brrrrriiiiiiiiiinngggg
“You expecting a call, angel?” Pale mumbled into your skin.
You nodded and yawned. “Pick it up for me?”
Pale picked up the phone.
“Pale speakin’ but you’ve reached me and my girl, how can I help ya?”
You rolled your eyes with a laugh, then watched Pale, waiting for a reaction.
“Joseph?”
“C’mon Dad, you know I don’t like my big name.”
Pale looked over at you, tears in his eyes. He took your hand in his and held it tightly.
“Happy halloween bud. Figured mom wouldn’t want you to go trick or treating so I went for ya. Hope you don’t mind.”
“Do I ever! Thanks dad, you’re the best!”
“Everything looks good? Nothing you don’t like?”
“I don’t like sweet tarts but everything else looks so good.”
“That’s good, kid. You gotta go to school or something?”
“Yeah, I got about five minutes before the bus comes. The girl at your place said I should call if I had time.”
“Thanks Joe. It’s good to hear your voice. You got a phone in your room now?”
“Yeah, my friends all have them and we call when the weather’s bad and we can’t play outside.”
“I should call you more often then, huh?”
“Mom said you’re too busy.”
Pale scowled.
“Never too busy to catch up with ya. Listen, call me whenever it suits you, right? If I ain’t home then the lady can chat with ya and let you know when to call back.”
“What’s her name? She nice?”
Pale spoke your name so reverently you felt like a goddess.
“She’s great. She wants to meet ya sometime.”
“That mean you’re gonna come to Florida?”
“We’ll see, no promises it’ll be soon, but sometime.”
“I miss you, dad. It’s funny, I don’t even know what you look like anymore. You could have grey hair like an old man.”
Pale carded a hand through his hair and grinned. The movement sent the tears welling in his eyes streaming down his cheeks.
“Hey, have some respect for your old man, huh? My hair’s still black, eyes are still brown. Is your nose still crooked from when you broke it playing football?”
There was a pause. You could imagine Joseph tracing his nose with a finger.
“A little. There’s still a-”
A pause again.
“Sorry dad, I gotta go. Bus is here.”
“See ya, Joe. Have a good day.”
“Bye!”
The receiver clicked.
Pale pulled you close to him and pressed his face into your chest.
“You see any grey hairs?”
You kissed his hair. “None. Still sexy as ever.”
“You hear what he said? You’re the best.”
“He isn’t wrong.” You ran your fingertips over Pale’s shoulders. “You’re a good dad, Pale.”
Pale hummed. “I wish I’d had a kid with you instead.”
“You know I don’t really want kids.”
Pale huffed a laugh. “I don’t either. I like Joe, but he wasn’t meant to happen. She poked a hole in the condom we used and it ripped. She told me the truth about it when she went into labor. Said it was her duty to have kids, even if I didn’t want them.”
“I’m so sorry,” You breathed. “That’s terrible.”
He sat up and shrugged. “Just wish you’d done it instead, wish I met you first. I’d stick around if it was you.”
You nodded with a soft smile. “I’d stick around too.”

But I wonder, where were you? When I was at my worst Down on my knees And you said you had my back So I wonder, where were you?

We can't go out like this It's just the two of us We should be making up We could be making love Didn't  used to talk like this Now you say you're giving up Took too much to build this house I don't wanna sit and watch it burn down I ain't leaving, I ain't leaving, I ain't leaving, I ain't giving you space I will not be replaced I don't wanna save face Don't leave me open, leave me open, leave me open, leave me open like that Whatever love we had We need to get it back

On the subject of you being gone forever I still can't believe it, I can't see it I should just stop counting days On the subject of the future Wouldn't it be nice to leave it open ended And pretend it could go either way
If I could have you back again I'd think about it once or twice, I guess If I could have you back I'd reconsider, maybe I'd say yes On the other hand, it would be better to have a life Without the constant indecision over If I could have you back If I could have you back

The Painted Boy
Chapter One || Next Chapter || AO3
+++++++++++
Percy was learning waterbending.
He knew his mom said he had to be careful, and he didn’t think she wanted him to use it much, but he had to! He was a waterbender!
It’s just like Katara, having to hide her bending to protect herself and her home. He could do the same, but he would also train.
After all, unlike Katara, he had easy access to a master. Katara herself.
He may have maybe kinda snuck money from Gabe.
But he’d been careful! He’d only taken a few bills, a little at a time, snuck a few from his gambling buddies too. He was smart, like Katara was with her gambling in that episode with Toph.
You’ve gotta be smart and distract them. He’d bring them beers and food, then sneak a few bills when they weren’t looking.
In the end he got enough money to buy the complete Avatar: The Last Airbender video set. And one of the neighbors gave him their old video player, a small one, they got a better one and didn’t need it anymore.
Now he had his teacher, which meant he could learn how to bend better.
First thing he had to do was take notes, that’s what all the teachers said.
He would figure out what he could do, everything according to Katara, then work on doing it.
Water was his new favorite drink, easy to carefully practice moving the water in the cup.
Watching the show he figured out all the little things to do, small bits of waterbending he could practice.
Lift the water, manipulate it, spin it, make shapes, see how far he can push it. He practiced freezing the water like Katara could, making ice cubes. He started to practice changing the ice cubes shapes.
He frowned watching the videos, they have to be really quick to do some of it, maybe he should practice running?
And he needs to learn how to pull water out of the air and plants like Katara learned from the creepy old lady who forced her to learn blood bending.
He wanted to learn blood bending, he knows it’s dangerous, but if he uses it like Katara, for the bad people, then it should be fine.
Of course, in the middle of all his interesting research and learning and practicing, he had to finish the summer assignments, and then… He was gonna have school again soon.
++++++++++++++++++++
The teachers just didn’t appreciate his smarts. He knows he’s smart, he’s learning from Katara really well!
He could make the water form any shape he wants now, and when he showers he practices controlling the moving water. He’s doing good!
School was just boring! How was he supposed to pay attention to geography? He could be practicing making a water whip instead!
He scowled, it’s not his fault that the words didn’t work, he couldn’t read it when it was gibberish. He kicked a rock on the playground, he hates school.
Ugh, Katara was smart though, she was amazing and smart, he wanted to be smart! He was trying. He swallowed back the tears, ignoring the burning in his eyes.
He was trying so hard.
++++++++++++++++++++
Percy huffed, glaring at the paper in front of him.
He had to really work hard to not let the numbers float around and mix everything up. Why did they have to be so close together? He carefully printed the work, and the answer in careful bold writing.
He was going to be an amazing waterbender, and to really be amazing he had to be smart too. Mom said that waterbender’s all work hard in school, and in the northern water tribe that seems true. It’s just annoying, he bet they didn’t have dyslexia like him, and they got to do stuff with their hands! That’s so much easier!
He turned in his test then sat back down to wait for the bell to ring.
He was determined to get at least a B in every subject this year. He would!
+++++++++++++++++++
Practicing his waterbending was hard. His mom always got so worried when she saw him practicing, but there was only so much he could do hiding in his room with a glass of water, or in the shower. He needed more space, a body of water where he could actually work at his bending.
He could do the little water whip, he could control the shape of the water, turn it to ice and back, coat his hands in it, pull little bits out of the air, dry himself off with a flick of his wrist, and stop the shower water in mid-air.
But he wanted to practice the big things!
He wanted to be able to make the octopus! Or make a big wave! Or those spirals of water, or the whips that cover her arms, or the shield, or stop the rain… There was so much he wanted to do, and he couldn’t cause he had to keep it hidden.
He didn’t like it, but he didn’t want to upset his mom.
He would just have to find someplace that no one would notice him waterbending.
The pool? He could make it look like splashes there, or he could try to go the rivers, but they’re dirty… Well, he could go to them and practice waterbending to clean them?
There’s an idea!
Oh, and he should totally keep a water-bottle with him at all times. Just in case of an emergency.
++++++++++++
Cleaning the river was going strangely.
He swears he saw two weird figures in the water. One had wolfish features and a seal-like body. It was kinda scary. Especially his glowing green eyes. The other wore rags and seaweed with a big beard. His appearance wasn’t as scary, but his eyes were angrier.
Neither of the two guys spoke to Percy mind you, and he’d only caught glimpses of them. But they kept reappearing,
He just focused on cleaning the water one day of bending practice at a time.
+++++++++++
Percy learned that the fish could talk. Or maybe he could just understand him?
There wasn’t much in the rivers, not many fish or other animals. But there were some. And the one’s there talked to each other, and when he commented on one of their conversations, they started talking to him.
He learned a lot about what happened nearby.
They also made him more determined to clean the river, the fish were thankful.
+++++++++++
It only took Percy three weeks to get the octopus technique down… roughly. It wasn’t perfect, but he was getting it.
The wave tricks were harder, more water to manipulate.
But at least he was getting better at… fine control?
That’s what that wolf-seal guy had mumbled before disappearing again.
Percy guesses that’s good, so he tried to practice it more.
Cleaning the river was hard though. He was starting to try to lift the water and filter all the bad stuff out onto the shore.
He didn’t quite get it to work right, too much bad stuff was going back into the river, but he was slowly figuring it out.
The more he worked, the easier it seemed to be too!
Like how Katara went from a little bit of rain stopping to making a huge dome!
He could do this!
Plus, he thinks that the weird scary guys in the water were happy, they didn’t glare so much anymore.
++++++++++++
Percy was only able to go to the rivers so much because mom worked late.
He tended to find bits of money in the trash and told Gabe he was working to ‘earn his keep’. It made Gabe happy, and he would give little bits of the money to Gabe. So Gabe didn’t tell mom.
He felt bad for lying, but he needed to get better! Waterbending was a part of him!
He wanted to do his best, to do as good as Katara.
++++++++++++++
It was getting colder now. Winter was coming.
Percy was determined to not be bothered by it. Katara wasn’t, she could control the ice and snow.
Though she did wear a jacket…
Percy used the money he found in the river (after cleaning it with his super cool waterbender powers) to buy a waterproof warm jacket.
There, that fixes that problem.
++++++++++++++
There was a new figure in the river.
It didn’t approach him, but also didn’t disappear when he looked at it, not like the scary ones.
This one was green. As in, his skin was green. His hair was black. He looked a lot neater than the scary ones, like clean neater. With pearls and cool armor. And you know, two fish tails. He was a mermaid, or merman, Percy guessed, but with two tails.
Did all mermaids have two tails and humans just got it wrong? Percy would have to ask Elli the Eel (he still couldn’t believe that was actually the Eel’s name).
But the fancy merman stayed while Percy was there, too far out for Percy to approach (he hadn’t managed to figure how to move on water like in avatar, his ice wasn’t thick enough yet). Percy decided to ignore him for now, maybe he wouldn’t come back?
Percy cleaned the river more, he also managed to get the rising wave trick (he’d named it himself!) down at last. He was happy.
+++++++++++++++
The merman came back.
It was about a good three months of irregular appearances (he was learning big words! He’d got an audio tape of some cool stories to listen too while cleaning the river. Audio tapes were easier then reading.) from the merman before he was approached.
It was also February, and very much cold now.
He’d managed to get his ice float down now, it was thick enough to sit on, and he was starting to get good at maneuvering it. Hopefully he’d still be able to make it when it was warm.
The merman approached him when he was trying to pull up a partly buried piece of trash.
Percy’s little ice float dipped suddenly.
“What are you doing?”
Percy blinked, turning to the voice, and the cause of the dip.
The merman had come up to him, was leaning on the ice float.
“Um, I’m trying to clean the river?”
The merman studied him.
“Why?”
Percy frowned, thinking.
“I just wanted to practice waterbending, but the river’s really dirty and it’s not nice so… I just thought… I just thought I’d try to clean it?”
The merman studied him. Percy felt like he was being judged.
“Waterbending?”
Percy faltered, he wasn’t supposed to tell anyone about it. But this is a merman, that’s not the same is it? Of course, he probably just calls it something different. This wouldn’t be disobeying mom, right?
“You know, controlling the water… It’s called waterbending in the…” Well now he felt like it was childish but, “In the TV show avatar. And it’s basically what I do so…”
The merman hummed, “In the winter?”
“Well, it’s not gonna get cleaner just because the weather is colder. If I want to clean it then I’ll have to work even when it’s cold!”
The merman hummed again, “What’s your name?”
Percy shifted on his ice floe, “Percy, Percy Jackson.”
The merman nodded.
“What’s yours?”
He blinked, studying Percy again.
“…Triton.”
Percy smiled brilliantly, “Nice to meet you Triton!”
The merman nodded, still studying Percy intently.
“Nice to meet you as well… Percy.”

Bad Influence - Chapter 11
Word Count - 5.4K
Authors Note - It's been a while! 👋🏻 About 4 months I think 😬 If there are any Bad Influence fans actually left out there, I'm so sorry & I love you. I had a really fuckin shitty last few months of 2019 & because of that, I kinda stopped doing the stuff I enjoy, writing this fanfic & using this blog being one of them.
Then I tried to come back before I was ready 😂 I wrote this chapter out about 2 months ago, but never bothered to post it bcos I didn't care enough about it. But I've recently returned to it, rewrote it & remembered why I fuckin love writing this fanfic. So I'm super excited to post this chapter & I hope you don't all hate it after how long it's been 😂 It's a bit rough bcos I'm getting back into it & I'm kinda rusty!
I love you guys for baring with me, I can't wait to get back into writing this fic for you 🖤
Warnings - Um, the f word is used in like every sentence oops, some implied smut when Nikki is remembering (choking trigger warning), I guess 'violence' but not really violence???, a whole lot of angst & a teeny bit of fluff at the end

(there's one bit where Nikki is glaring across the bar at a character & this gif is spot on)
Tumblr media
*Nikkis POV*
I drummed my fingers to the sound of a guitar as I watched Mick do his thing through the glass of the recording booth, his fingers working magic as he played the riff to Looks That Kill.
Fuck, that weird little guy could play.
“Nikki, this song is gonna fucking kill!” Tommy yelled enthusiastically, beating his drumsticks on the arm of the battered couch his was lounging on.
I smiled weakly back at him, my nerves keeping me from matching his excitement. “I hope so,” I mumbled. I look around the studio, basking in the enormity of where we were right now. Mötley was recording their second album & my nerves were shot. It had to be perfect. It had to do well.
“Stop stressing man, everyone’s gonna fucking freak over this album, I just know it!” He replied, smiling encouragingly, his usual Tommy level of positivity feeling sickeningly sweet, but still, I nodded at him gratefully. “So we hitting up The Whisky or what tonight boys?” He continued, addressing Vince as well as me, who was pouting on the couch next to him.
I chuckled without amusement, shaking my head. “Fuck no, not a chance I’m going in there yet.”
Tommy scowled at me. “Sixx, come on dude, you cant avoid the place forever. Plus, she might not even be working tonight!”
“I’m not risking it! I’m not gonna be able to enjoy the night if she’s there, judging my every fucking move, you know how she is.” I replied, rolling my eyes.
“So you’ve still not talked to her since..” Tommy trailed off, awkwardly. But Vince happily picked up from where he’d left off.
“Since you lead her on, fucked her & then blew her off?” He snapped arrogantly, instantly causing my jaw to tense.
“Don’t fucking start with me, Vinny. I’m not in the mood.”
“Oh, you mean you don't wanna hear about what a dick you were? What a surprise.” The sarcasm thick in his voice.
I slammed my hand down on the recording table & stood up sharply. “The fuck is your problem, man?” I snarled, his attitude & the mounting stress from the album mixing together to create a dangerous cocktail of anger & belligerence.
“My problem?” He questioned, standing up to meet my stare. “My problem is you Sixx. Beths a good fucking girl, what you did was real messed up, I should fucking floor you again for how you treated her. You owe the chick an apology at the goddamn least.” He spat, his anger in Beths defence honourable, but fucking irritating.
I chuckled arrogantly at his misplaced valiance. “Give it up the knight in shining armour act Vinny, I didn’t see you rushing to commit to her when she was getting your dick wet.”
I saw the danger flash in his eyes as he took a warning step towards me. “I didn’t fuck her & leave either.” He hissed, the venom in his voice palpable.
“Aw, did I upset your girlfriend?” I joked patronisingly, very aware that I was pushing it too far, but yet I couldn’t help myself, Vince acting all high & mighty was really starting to piss me off.
Vinces eyes narrowed sharply & I saw his hands ball into fists at his side. “Like I said, she’s a good girl. She didn’t deserve that.” He said through his teeth, the strain to keep calm evident in his voice.
I smirked at him amused, looking him up & down. “Whatcha gonna do Vince? Hit me again? Defend her honour? She’s a chick dude & a stuck up one at that. And she ditched your ass if you remember, you should be thanking me.” I laughed, shrugging.
“You know what Sixx, you’re an asshole. You know as well as I do that Beth isn’t another fucking groupie to this band. Nah, I didn’t wanna date her, but I like her- We all like her.” He corrected himself quickly.
“Vinny’s right man, I’m not taking sides, but Beths cool & I kinda do like having her around!” Tommy piped up, nodding.
“Fuck off T-Bone, you only want her around because you know as soon as she goes, so does your uptight piece of ass.” I shot at him, my frustration with the pair of them growing at a dangerous rate.
“Dude c’mon, there’s no need..”
I cut Tommy off viciously. “What the fuck has happened to this band?!” I shouted, shoving Vince out of my face. “Since when do we give this much of a fuck about chicks?! Look at where we are?!” I gestured around the recording studio. Mick had stopped playing & had casually lit a cigarette as he watched us bickering through the sound-proof glass. “This is what’s important. Now I’m going for a fucking smoke, this conversation is done & when I come back in we’re gonna record a fucking album, got it?!”
I barged out of the studio, flicked open my lighter & sparked up my cigarette, leaning back against the wall as I took in a shaky drag, my anger still surface level. I exhaled & closed my eyes, feeling the May sun warm my face & start to melt my mood away.
What was everyone’s fuckin’ obsession with this girl?!
Yeah she was cool, but she’s still a chick. And chicks = trouble.
I let my mind wander back to the look she gave me as she lay beneath me, my hand around her throat as she came undone & smirked to myself as I lifted the cigarette back to my smug lips. She was so worth the chase.
But Christ, I’m supposed to feel bad because I don’t want all that cutesy shit afterwards? No. Beth knew me, we’d had enough arguments about the kinda guy I am, she did this to herself. Not my fault that she thought she meant anything more to me than any one of those other girls. She was a fuck. A good fuck. But a fuck nonetheless.
I took another drag as the image of Beth sat in her bed with that stung look on her face snuck its way involuntarily into my mind. I could see those hurt tears & hear her bitter words ordering me to leave. I couldn’t help the pang of guilt in my stomach that accompanied the image.
She’s a fuckin’ chick, Nikki. Chicks = trouble, I recited to myself, rubbing my face roughly with my hands, almost in hope that I could scrub away the memory of her pained face. Get over it man, it’s done.
I sharply exhaled the last of my smoke before throwing it aggressively to the floor, somehow more frustrated than I was before.
Time to go record a fuckin’ album.
*Later*
*Beths POV*
I smoothed out the material of the tiny black dress I was wearing as I pouted my lips at my reflection in the mirror, appreciating the sight of myself all dolled up & ready to forget all about Nikki fucking Sixx.
I flashed an all too familiar looking smirk at myself before I spun around of my sky high heels & strutted out of the ladies bathroom & back over to Sophia who was waiting at the bar, two drinks in hand. She winked at me as I got closer, holding out one of the glasses for me to take.
“Girl, you look unreal! If we weren’t here trying to pull for you, I’d take you home right now,” she laughed, nudging me & winking again.
I let out a laugh as I took a swipe at her arm, “I am not here trying to pull!” I insisted, not even managing to fool myself. It’d been a little over a week since I went from the all time high of fucking Nikki to the crashing low of realising I meant nothing to him in a matter of minutes & I’d laid around feeling sorry for myself ever since. Well, not tonight. I was gonna find a guy & I was gonna remind myself what a goddamn catch I am.
“Oh Beth, there’s a reason you’re wearing that dress tonight & girl, it ain’t for the coverage,” she giggled as I took another playful swipe. “Hey, there’s no judgements here! I’d want a good lay after the emotional rollercoaster that has been Nikki Sixx!”
I raised my eyebrows at her as she quickly mimed locking her lips. “Sorry, sorry, we don’t mention that name, my bad.”
I shook my head. “It’s fine, I’m over it,” I lied. “But, if a cute guy wants to buy me a drink & maybe show me a good time, I’m not gonna say no.” I shrugged as we both burst into a fit of giggles, before I took a long sip of the very strong cocktail.
“Well that sounds like my queue.” Came a smooth voice from behind me. I turned to face the handsome stranger who was stood leaning casually against the bar, eyebrow cocked as his eyes scanned up & down my body, drinking in the sight of me. “You have excellent timing.” I blushed, appreciating his good looks right back. He was classically good looking, with blonde hair & a chiselled jaw, dressed smart in a shirt that hugged his toned physique & muscular arms just enough to spark a little intrigue as to what lay underneath. He was the exact opposite to Nikki in every physical way. Where Nikki was unruly & unkept, this guy was clean shaven & well groomed. He wore no leather or studs & his smile was friendly & genuine, not smug & he wasn’t dripping in arrogance.
“I’m Daniel.” He introduced himself, holding out a hand for me to shake. I looked into his electric blue eyes & blushed once again.
“Beth, it’s nice to meet you.” I replied as smoothly as I could.
“& I’m Sophia, but I guess no-one asked,” she piped up mockingly, winking at me. “Now Dan, unless you’ve got a cute, single friend for me, I’m gonna get outta your way & go for a dance.” Soph smirked, grabbing her drinking & flouncing off towards the dance floor, blowing us a kiss as she did.
We both let out a laugh. “She seems great,” Daniel said as I nodded, taking a sip of my drink. “She mentioned something about an emotion rollercoaster though? I hope I’m not stepping on anyone’s toes?” He queried.
I swallowed my drink before letting out a little laugh. “Not at all, there are no toes to be stepping on, don’t worry.”
“Well good, I’m glad. I’m surprised though, a gorgeous girl like you doesn’t have a man. You’re sure there’s no-one, because you seem way too good to be true!” He flirted, as I laughed
“Oh you’re smooth.” I teased, “but no, there’s absolutely no-one.” I answered, pushing any & all thoughts & feelings I might have towards Nikki Sixx out of my mind.
*Little later*
“Wow, so you’re a doctor?” I asked, impressed.
Daniel laughed, shaking his head. “I wish! I’m a med student currently, but that’s the hope one day.”
“What made you wanna get into medicine then?”
He paused for a second, his warm smile faltering for a brief moment & I sensed his hesitation to answer. “I, um, lost my dad when I was younger. Spent a lot of time in hospitals with him when he got sick. I remember watching all these doctors around me taking care of people, helping, curing.. They seemed like superheroes to me back then. After we lost my dad, I knew I wanted to help people, be one of those people that kids could look up to in the same way I did, yanno?”
I nodded, smiling at his compassion & genuineness.
“Sorry, bit heavy for a first meet, I know.” He laughed awkwardly.
“Not at all!” I replied, “I asked the question, you just answered it honestly, I appreciate that.”
As Daniel carried on talking about his studies, I couldn’t help but admire him. THIS was the kinda guy I was supposed to end up with. Smart, hot as hell, a brilliant career ahead of him, goals, aspirations.. He was exactly the kinda man I could take home to my father. Daniel was everything I should want & he was actually interested in me.
And yet, I still felt that unwanted & yet infuriatingly all-to-familiar flame ignite the second I heard his voice drift over from the bar.
“Jack & coke please darlin’.”
Nikkis voice hit me like a slap in the face & rush desire all at once & I immediately froze, my body unsure how to react to my contrasting emotions.
“Are you ok?” Daniel asked, reaching out & touching my arm, concern written across his face. I flinched as his touch, still lost somewhere in Nikkis voice, & snatched my arm away instinctively.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to-“ Started Daniel, his concern look now laced with panic.
“N-no, its fine honestly, its not you, its just..” I drifted off, briefly glancing behind me, trying to pin a location on the voice. My eyes caught sight of the four of them standing at the bar, waiting on their drinks. Nikki was dressed in his usual leather trousers, torn at the knees, & combat boots & a torn up shirt. His hair almost appeared messier than usual & he had a cigarette hanging from his lips. He couldn’t have been more different from the sharp, handsome man sat opposite me.
Daniel followed my line of sight & spotted the literal motley crew. Nikki was already hitting on the bar maid, distracting her whilst Tommy & Vince reached over & stole a bottle from behind the bar; all whilst Mick stood by, watching disapprovingly & swigging from his trademark flask.
“You know them?” Daniel asked hesitantly.
“Nope.” I replied bluntly, snapping back to reality & turning back to him. “I fancy getting out of here though, you wanna head back to mine, continue the drinking there?”
Daniel looked a little taken a back at the upfront offer as I stood up & downed the last of my drink, but I was fairly certain he wouldn’t refuse. I didn’t care either way at this point, I just needed out of here.
“Um sure-“
“Great, I’ll go find Sophia..”
“She’s over there, talking to those guys you apparently don’t know.” Dan stated, his tone now flat & a little judgemental as he raised an eyebrow at me.
“Look, Daniel, I don’t wanna get into it, but its better we just leave.” I said, hoping to avoid any questions, but his face was growing more unimpressed by the second. “I’ve really enjoyed getting to know you Dan, ok? But I can’t be here right now, so I gotta go. I’d, um, I’d like you to join me.. If you want to, of course. I mean, you don’t have to..” I mumbled, suddenly very aware & embarrassed by how he must be viewing me in that moment.
I saw his eyes narrow at my discomfort &, I’m assuming against his better judgement, he nodded & stood up to join me. “I’m not sure what’s happening here, but I’ve enjoyed getting to know you too & maybe you could fill me in on why you’re running away over that drink at yours?” He asked, a little suspicious but friendly. I nodded, giving him a small smile.
We started towards the exit when I felt a pair of hands snake around my waist & lift me excitedly into the air. I squealed in shock & suprise as Tommy span me around before placing me back on my feet.
“Beth! I cant believe you guys are here, what’re the chances? Soph said you came here to avoid us & we came here because Sixx wanted to avoid you! How fuckin’ funny is that?” He said, roaring with laughter, his hand resting on his stomach as he struggled to regain control on his amusement.
“Tommy.” I said sternly, shooting him a look that told him to shut the hell up. He quickly stood up straight, coughing a little to hide his laughter, before glancing over towards Daniel.
“Hey, who’s this? I’m Tommy dude, how ya doing?” He said, offering out his hand enthusiastically.
“Daniel, I’m good man, how’re you?” He answered, accepting the handshake hesitantly.
“I’m good? Hey, you wanna come meet the rest of the guys?” Tommy offered enthusiastically, without a second thought as to why that might not be such a good idea.
“Actually T-Bone, we’re just heading out.” I replied sharply, giving him another warning look.
“Ok, ok,” he laughed, holding his hands up in defeat as he got the hint. “It was nice to meet you man!” Tommy smiled at Dan, who nodded awkwardly back to him before T-Bone practically bounced back over to the bar.
“Don’t know them huh?” Daniel asked, his voice oozing with sarcasm suddenly, making me cringe.
“I’m sorry, they’re just.. A lot, ok?” I tried to explain, frustrated, mainly with myself.
“What’s the deal with this one?” Asked Dan, gesturing towards Nikki, who was leaning against the bar, sipping on his Jack & coke, his eyes fixed coldly on he two of us.
“That’s the, um.. Emotional rollercoaster.” I answered sheepishly, coughing to distract from my amounting discomfort, whilst simultaneously avoiding the eyes of both Nikki & Dan.
“Right.. Well, your rollercoaster is on his way over here.”
Fuck.
I glanced up to see Nikki, in all his arrogance, strolling towards us, his usual smirk fixed in place.
“I’m so sorry for whatever he says.” I quickly whispered to Dan, before Nikki came to a stop in front of us. I watched his eyes scan up & down Daniel, obvious sizing him up without an ounce of subtlety, before he turned his attention to me.
“Leaving without introducing us, Lizzy?” He drawled, the pretension thick in his voice.
“Yes Nikki, I am. So if you’d like to move-“
He cut me off, his focus back on Daniel. “I’m Nikki Sixx,” he stated, without the courtesy of a handshake.
“Daniel,” Dan replied, flatly, seemingly glad there was no extended hand to shake.
“And how do you know the lovely Lizzy here, Dan?” Nikki asked, his smirk never once faltering.
“We just met tonight, but we’re justing heading back to hers, if you don’t mind.” Dan replied simply, taking my hand.
“Oh but you see, I do mind.” Nikki stated bluntly, his smile as wide as it was dark as he side stepped back in front of Dan who had tried to manoeuvre round him. “Lizzy here is what we like to call a groupie & we,” he gestured towards the rest of the band behind him, “don’t particularly like sharing.”
“Oh fuck you, Sixx.” I scoffed, my face growing hot with a mix of anger & embarrassment. I turned to look at Dan, cringing at his raised eyebrow & gave him an apologetic look. “Don’t listen to him, he’s just being an asshole, I’m not a groupie.”
“Really?!” Nikki replied, dragging out the word dramatically as his shit eating grin somehow managed to grow wider. “Because I remember fucking you about a week ago & my boy Vince over there,” he pointed to at the very pissed off looking lead singer, “swears he remembers fucking you not long before that? Or are with both mistaken? I mean, there are a lot of you girls, you do all kinda look the same.. Feel the same too.” He chuckled darkly, shooting me a sly look. I glared at him with an expression so deadly that dared him to carry on. He rose to the challenge. “I tell you what though buddy,” Nikki continued, leaning into Dan so he was speaking into his ear, but just loud enough for me to catch what he was saying, “if you’re heading back to hers you’re in for a treat. She’s got the mouth of a motherfuckin’ Angel.” He finished, glancing over at me & winking. I was prepared to fly at him in a blind rage, fists balled, ready to wipe that smug smile off of his face permanently, when Dan spoke up, in a voice so peaceful & gentle, that it made his words seem somehow harsher.
“You are an arrogant piece of shit. I’ve been sat with this girl for the last hour & I spend a minute in your presence & it’s immediately clear to me that she’s way too good for you. But I’m sure she’ll realise that in her own time.” Daniel turned back to me, his expression stoney & irritated, but I could swear there was a hint of sympathy in his eyes. “If you ever get off of this rollercoaster doll, you know where you can find me.” He said, letting go of my hand as he stepped around the unmoving Nikki.
“Daniel, wait..” I caught him by the arm & quickly stepped in his path, stopping him.
“Beth, you seem like a great girl & I don’t think I’ve ever hit it off so quickly with someone like I have with you. But it’s obvious you have something with that guy & I’m not really interested in competing with him for your attention.”
I nodded slowly, knowing his words were fair. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s ok. And I mean it, if you decide to get off the rollercoaster.. I can probably offer you a slightly calmer ride. A carousel maybe?” Dan winked, laughing as I let out a light giggle. His blue eyes focused on mine, sending a surge of electricity through my body that momentarily extinguished the flame that Nikki somehow always managed to light. I lifted my lips & placed them softly on Daniels for the briefest second, before pulling away.
“Thank you.” I whispered.
His eyes lingered on my lips for a second, silently asking for more, before he came back to reality & gave me a genuine smile. “It was nice to meet you Beth. I do hope I get to see you again”, he nodded, before kissing my cheek & heading for the door.
I stood still for a second, gathering my thoughts & regaining my composure, before walking towards the bar where the Crüe & Sophia were stood, trying to act as if they hadn’t been watching.
I had barely made it over to them before Nikki was straight in there with his sly comments, immediately trying to get under my skin.
“Aw was Prince Charming not happy to hear the Princess was actually a band slu-“
Nikki didn’t get the chance to finish his insult. He was silenced by the remainder of my drink soaking him as I threw it at him furiously, dousing his arrogance with my cocktail.
“That is for thinking you have any right to chase away a good guy just because your petty, selfish ass is jealous.” I spat. “And this..”
The loud crack of my hand slapping him sharply across the face echoed around the bar, followed by the whooping of Vince & Tommy. I even caught a glimpse of Mick smirking.
Nikki recoiled, his hand flying to his crimson cheek, shock & fury on his face. But his rage couldn’t match mine. I grabbed his face roughly, my hand cupping his chin & cheeks, forcing him to meet my wrathful glare.
“That is for fucking me & leaving me like I was one of your whores.” I seethed, my voice quiet & dangerous.
Nikkis face went from white hot anger to an ice cold stare in an instant as he straightened up, pushing me off of him as he did. He took a step towards me, but I didn’t move an inch. I was way too fucking angry to back down.
“Listen Princess, you’re fucking lucky I’m not a bad guy-“ he began, but my sharp laugh rang loud, cutting him off.
“Not a bad guy?! Nikki, are you really that delusional?! You’ve done nothing but purposely fuck with my head from the day I met you. You’ve insulted me, dragged me down to your level, used me, screwed my chances with two different guys & for what?!” I screamed, tears threatening to form. “No, you know what?! You're fucking lucky Sixx, I’m not gonna do this here. I’m done. I don’t want anything to do with you.”
I span around, ready to make my dramatic exit, when I came face to face with a very happy looking band manager, Doc. He clearly couldn’t care less about our drama as he marched over to us like nothing was happening.
“Bartender, a round of shots for these boys & their girlfriends. We need to celebrate;”
“The fuck are you talking about Doc?” Snapped Nikki, his eyes still fixed on me.
“Boys, you’re in!" He announced, unable to hide his obvious pleased-with-himself smirk "I've just been told that Mötley Crüe have been offered a last minute slot to play alongside the likes of Judas Priest, Scorpions, Van Halen & The Prince of fucking Darkness, Ozzy fucking Osbourne at the US Festival on Memorial Day weekend!” Doc exclaimed, laughing as the band began shouting & whooping, looking disbelieved & excited as hell. Choruses of “are you serious?!” & “you’re fucking kidding!” we’re passed between them as Doc reassured them that they were on their way up.
In that moment, watching these guys I’d grown to love over the last couple of years get the break they worked so hard for, I couldn’t be mad. I watched as Tommy jumped on Nikkis back, Vince hugged Doc & Mick silently smirked to himself. They deserved this.
Doc handed me & Sophia a shot as we congratulated them all, although I couldn’t quite bring myself to share my enthusiasm with Nikki. But he was too busy to notice as he held up his shot glass in a toast.
“To us! We’ve got an old man, a kid drummer, a cover band singer & a fucking run away. Win it all or loose it all, we’re Mötley fucking Crue!” He yelled, his excitement & energy almost infectious, as much as I wanted to hate him.
“To you guys!” Sophia cheered, laughing as we all downed our shots.
“Let’s get another round in, we’re celebrating! And pour one for yourself gorgeous.” Vince called to the barmaid who was more than happy to oblige, blushing as he winked at her, turning on the Vince Neil charm that would assure she’d be going home with him at the end of the night. I remember that well, I chuckled to myself.
The atmosphere of the night had changed so dramatically from what it was 10 minutes previously, everyone’s anger & awkwardness forgotten in the wake of such elating news. I looked around all the happy faces; Vince flirting with the bar maid, Tommy all over a giggling Sophia, Mick & Doc eagerly discussing set lists & felt an overwhelming sense of misplacement. After all that had happened, I just couldn’t bring myself to match their enthusiasm, not tonight.
I noticed Nikki's gaze focused on me, his face betraying his now obvious guilt as he watched me stand alone, uncomfortable & upset. His sudden success had clearly snapped him out of his petty, jealous mood.
Uninterested in an apology from him, I let my eyes continue to scan the room, looking anywhere but at him, when Sophia glanced over, catching my eye & gestured for me to join in. I forced my best smile as I walked over to her & Tommy.
“Take another shot Reynolds!” Tommy shouted, pushing a shot glass of mysterious liquid at me. I laughed politely as I shook my head.
“Thanks, but no thanks T-Bone. I think I’m actually gonna shoot yanno, I’m getting pretty tired.” I lied.
“Beth, don’t leave, please?” Tommy pleaded, his face suddenly serious, moving away from Soph & towards me.
“T-Bone, it’s not a big deal honestly, you guys enjoy your celebrations!”
“Just talk to him. I know the fucker doesn’t deserve it, Beth, I know. But he cares for you more than you think, I promise. We all do.” He added, placing his hand in mine & giving it a squeeze as he flashed me a goofy half smile.
I gave him a half smile & squeezed his hand back. “I know Tommy & I love you guys, I really do. But I can’t be around him, its.. it’s too hard.” I muttered back, so quietly it was almost inaudible above the music playing in the bar. But Tommy caught it.
“You care for him too, don’t you?” He asked, just as quietly.
I nodded, my eyes filling with tears. “God knows why T-Bone, he’s made it clear he doesn’t care about me. I’m just another girl he fucked.” I sniffed, furiously wiping away my tears before anyone noticed.
“Beth, Sixx is a dick. I’ve watched him fuck over chick after chick who was convinced they’d tame him & he tosses them without a second thought. But not you. I don’t know what the fuck goes on in Nikkis head, but that fucker cares about you. So please, don’t ditch us all just because you think he doesn’t.”
“I’m sorry Tom, I know he’s your friend & you wanna see the best in him, but you’re wrong. Nikki Sixx only cares about himself.” I replied, straightening my posture & regaining my composure. I pulled Tommy into a tight hug & congratulated him again. “I’ll see ya around T-Bone, I’m sure.” I winked, gesturing towards Sophia.
He laughed, “I’ll look after her.”
I blew him a kiss before heading towards the door, not wanting to disturb anyone else’s night with my drama.
“Lizzy, wait up.” I heard Nikkis voice call. I closed my eyes briefly, choosing whether to stop or keep going. I chose the latter & walked swiftly out of the door, pretending I hadn’t heard.
But my ignorance was in vain & he was right behind me, following suit out of the bar.
“Nikki please, just go back-“
My sentence was cut short by his lips crashing onto mine. I froze, feeling anger, lust & passion sweep through my body as my brain tried to compute the correct emotional response. I pushed him away sharply, deciding anger overwhelmed any feelings I had towards him.
“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?! Are you asking for another slap?!”
“Lizzy, I’m sorry ok?” He blurted out, clearly uncomfortable with apologies.
“You’re sorry?! Oh, well that makes everything ok then.” I said sarcastically, rolling my eyes at him.
“I know ok, I fucked up. I’ve been a dick to you & I’m sorry. I just, I don’t know how to do this shit.” He mumbled, running his hands through his tangled hair.
“Do what, Sixx?” My frustration mounting with his half-assed apology.
“I don’t fucking do.. This.” He gestured between the two of us, struggling to find his words.
I sighed with exasperation. “What is this Nikki? Is this an apology or what, because honestly there isn’t much you can say right now, just let me go home.” I finished, turning to leave, but he caught hold of my hand, pulling me into him. He placed his hand gently under my chin, bringing my face up to his.
“I don’t do this, ok? I don’t do feelings or relationships, fuck, I won’t even sleep with a girl twice.” He laughed, before clearing his throat when he saw my unamused expression. “Lizzy, I am sorry, I didn’t mean to hurt you. I got pissed as hell when I saw you with that fucking pretty boy, I snapped.. I don't know, I guess I was kinda jealous.. I do care about you.”
I scoffed. “You’ve got a funny way of showing it.”
“I do, Lizzy. But listening to you telling me why I’m a bad guy, all the shit I’ve done to you, you’re right. And I’m sorry. Just, please don’t leave. Come celebrate with us, we all want you here. I want you here.. You’ve been with us from the start, it wouldn’t feel the same without you. You mean a lot to me... Um, to us. You mean a lot to us.” He corrected.
I looked into his green eyes & saw the sincerity, noted the lack of arrogance in his voice & the absence of his usual smug smile. I so badly wanted to give into him. I wanted to taste his kiss again, melt against him like I always do. I wanted to take his hand & go back inside, enjoy the night with the band, drink, have fun & fall into bed with him when the night was over.
But I’d fell for Nikkis sweeter side before, I knew how the night would end. He’d leave afterwards & I’d be hurt all over again. And I wasn’t gonna let that happen.
“No Nikki, I’m sorry.”

SUPERNATURAL S1EP4 “PHANTOM TRAVELER”
“hawaiian music plays” aww how nice! the brothers are on vacation in the tropics ― oh. it’s an airport. okay, then they’re going on vacation! no? just this random upset dude getting possessed by black sand? alright. cool. also i wonder if the dude who went “what are the odds of dying in a plane ride” was in cahoots with the black sand
ghrwioghwr this plane attendant lady’s reaction to his eyes going black is the best ― just like, “. . . . . k.”
black sand you have horrible taste in puns.
aaaaand the plane is going down down down. wheeeeeee! i don’t think anyone is enjoying this ride.
“you can’t bring it home like that” you know, assuming you have a home to bring it back to in the first place. also, sam, take a goddAMN NAP.
“i'm . . . taking some time off.” does ― does sam ever actually go back to college and finish his degree? does he ever even show any interest in doing so after the whole jess subplot is tied up?
“i don’t have that kind of clearance” “no prob, man, i’ll just have impersonate members of the government!”
i’ve seen a few clips of later seasons so compared to those, like. dean and sam are dressed so fucking unprofessionally bejeesus.
“what are you, nuts?” this coming from the dude who thought he saw a man with blackened eyes rip off the emergency exit door one-handed. i mean, he actually did see it, but still. the pot and the kettle are a tad too close in shade for him to be throwing any rocks. i’m mixing up my metaphors here, i think
eyy! they’re dressed professionally now! aw, dean, it’s okay, your disguises will get more sophisticated later :) i mean you won’t like those any better either but you don’t need to know that
woog dassa wreckeded plane innit
hey! don’t bash on the home made emf emitter! dean was smart enough to make it himself, i think that’s really ― GHRUIWGRW HE USES SAM TO WIPE THE STUFF OF HIS HAND
woop! time to power-waddle ― er, sorry ― run out of there!
ahh i feel sorry for this man. especially considering he ALSO gets possessed by the black sand!
i ― *sigh* goddamn remember when demonic possession was an entirely new thing in this show? and the battle between heaven and hell and all their separate minions wasn’t a central conflict?
sir you CAN’T USE THE SAME BAD PUN TWICE
ahhh, that age-old habit of wishing and/or knowing your parent/s must have the answers to everything . . . too bad john ain’t there to let them know if he does or not
hhhh i hate this next bit :| lalalalalalalalalalalalala i’m not listening
whggrhwiog dean sweetie you’re doing great just close your eyes and hold on tight (although, honestly? i don’t really blame him for his dislike of the takeoff; i always hated that part the most)
“someone in emotional distress” so, like . . . . dean?
ghruwighuwr sam, sam, quit motherhenning
“don’t mind me . . . . . just putting my beats near your heads . . . . nothing out of the ordinary here . . . .”
i know saying the name of god in latin makes demons flinch, but it just basically looked like he got the heebie-jeebies asfanfkwrnglirwhgl
does. does no one else hear this? also why does he say “i know what happened to your girlfriend” only to then follow it up with “she must have died screaming” as if to imply he doesn’t actually know what happened to her?
very convenient that sam managed to find the right page while the plane’s going down.
i like amanda! i am adopting her in my fics.
“we’ll see you around jerry” and then he’s never mentioned again . . . . i’m gonna adopt him into my fics, too.
egads! we’ve got out first clue about papa winchester’s whereabouts! . . . uh, kinda. cue the rock music!

Hey can you do a Robin x reader fic with the reader is in college and also being Dustin’s sister? Robin convinced that Henderson!reader has a thing for Steve? Rating anything just Robin stumbling over how much she has a thing for Dustin’s sister and being sad about the Steve thing even though there is no thing?
Tumblr media
After a very long year full of supernatural idiocies, your friends and little brother getting in fatal trouble and all that, a full year of college normalcy away from Hawkins was what you needed to get back on track with your mental health and emotional safety, and now that Summer holiday came once again, you were very happy to be reunited with your family.
Dustin told you that Steve was still working part time at Scoops Ahoy, even after the horrible events at Starcourt, and Robin was there too, so you just HAD to go and see them, you missed them so much.
Of course, you arranged yourself more attentively than usual since it was an important day today, so make up, a nice hairstyle and a pretty outfit were perfect - Nobody would realise you were a huge nerd and geek...Not that you minded. It was your whole life and happiness.
As soon as you stepped in the parlor, you noticed Steve and ran to him, jumping over the counter and hugged him tightly, kissing his cheek and spinning around with him, chanting his name.
“Steve! Steve! Steve! Gosh, how I’ve missed you! It’s really been a whole year, hasn’t it?! Can you believe it?! I sure as hell can’t!” you exclaim happily, letting go of him and analysing him from head to toe. “That hat still doesn’t do your hair any justice.” you laughed, leaning on the counter.“Yes, it’s been a year...Honestly, Y/N, I don’t know if I’d rather face College Horror or Monster Horror again.” he smirked, shaking his head. “But you sure look fresh as a daisy, I’m glad to see that.” he continued, then banged on the little slide-open door, only to be opened by your favourite girl.“Robin!!” your eyes sparkled as you chirped her name.“Our fave girl has returned from College Nightmare, Buckley, don’tcha wanna greet her properly?” Steve asked, motioning for her to get out of there.“Nice to see you back, Y/N! Came here for some free ice cream?” she smirked, already preparing your favourite.“Oh my God, your desserts are always the best! I swear, Robin, you are the best! Hey, why don’t we hang out at my house tonight? Get some booze, play some games, watch some movies? Sounds good? Dustin’s gonna stay over at Mike’s tonight.” you suggested with a sly look on your face.“Sure, why not. It’s been a while since we’ve hung out like that. And it will be nice to have Robin around too, now.” he shrugged. “We finish in two hours, you can prepare everything for our sleep over and we’ll bring the good stuff, ‘kay?” he said, making you  nod vigurously.“Hell yes! See ya later!” you hugged them both and rushed outside to make preparations.
All day you only thought of how to finally ask Robin out.
She’s been in your head all year and you couldn’t, for the love of anything good in this world, get rid of those thoughts about her, so might as well pursue them now.
The only people who knew of this crush were Dustin and Steve, which now seemed to be like literal Father and Son, which you were very happy about. You got to warm up around Steve after he started taking care of and protecting your little brother during all that mess with the demodogs, and from then on, you started hanging around.
After you finished Highschool, Steve started working at Scoops Ahoy, while you decided to volunteer at a place to make your CV better for your future career, so while you didn’t get to hang out too much, you got the privilege of meeting Robin, who was honestly the most beautiful and intriguing girl you’ve ever met.
Unfortunately, you were always much too shy to ask her out, especially knowing how same-sex relationships were seen around, and you were afraid of making her hate you, so being friends was the next best thing, and as long as she was happy, you were happy as well.
Little did you know that the girl thought the exact same things as you were, and even more, she thought you were in love with Steve, seeing how close you were with each other, and she started feeling darker feelings pitting in her stomach.
Night soon came by and your two friends finally arrived, ready to change in their PJs and you gathered in the living room, music loud and preparing for the booze games.
“What should we start with? Truth or Dare, Spin the Bottle, Never have I ever...?” you trailed off, thinking of what games to play.“Let’s start with Never have I ever. It’s good for a big round of shots, right?” Seve suggested, opening the vodka bottle and pouring in the glasses.“Okay, sounds good! So, let’s see...Never have I ever...Uhhh....Fuck, I don’t know...Never have I ever gone to a rock concert.” you finally managed to blurt out, then saw Robin chuckle and Steve rolling his eyes, taking a shot.“Woaw, dingus, you sure are as lame as you look.” she snorted, making you giggle.“I mean, did you see how that sailor hat looks on him? Clearly, he’s so lame, he’s kinda like...A super innocent adorable kind of lame!” you exclaimed, making him groan as you laughed, not realising Robin was biting her lip in anger.“Okay, okay, whatever, my turn. Never have I ever went out on a date that went horribly bad.” Steve said, making the both of you drink and laugh at the memories, yet Robin looked down, not drinking.“Like, d’you remember how horribly bad that date with what’s-his-name went? He was so freaking boring that I had to pretend to go to the bathroom, call you to come rescue me, and then we spent the whole night watching movies, trash-talking him and eating ice cream?” you laughed remembering the awkward situation as you drank the shot.“Or that girl I tried to date after Nancy and I accidentally called her by that name...And just then I realised I didn’t even know what her name was. She made me pay the pizza bill but ate none of it, so I called you to come over and help me finish everything.” he nudged you a bit rougher than intended, making you laugh like idiots.“We’re idiots. But, Robin, you didn’t drink. Does that mean that all your dates went well? I’m so happy to hear that!” you grinned at her gently, but she shook her head.“I didn’t get to date anyone, actually.” she shrugged, looking away.“Aww, come on, Robin, don’t get upset! You’re a lovely girl, I’ve never seen anyone funnier, smarter and more beautiful than you! Every guy would be lucky to date someone like you.” you encouraged her, but she only breathed out a soft laugh.“Never have I ever had a crush on someone of the same sex.” Robin declared, making the both of you drink a shot, look at each other with a soft blush, than look away.“Glad to hear I’m not the only one here. Then again...Come on, King Steve, didn’t you like Billy even a little bit? The way he’d hover over your body, all sweaty and panting, calling your name so confidently...” you smirked, slurring a bit, making him groan and fall on the ground.“Fuck Hargrove, okay? He’s lucky he got out alive of that whole Mindflayer shit and moved back to Cali for Uni. If I have to hear one more King Steve from his mouth, I swear I’ll shave him and make him eat his stupid mullet.” Steve threatened, making you fall back with drunken laughter too.“You wish he’d fuck you, man. He’s good, I’m sure of that.” you giggled, poking his sides.“Shut up.” Steve murmured. “Imma go get some snacks from the kitchen...Or vomit.” he left the room, making you roll on your side, smirking at Robin.“Who’s the lucky lady you crushed or are crushing on, Robin, dear~?” you tried to press, making her look away a bit.“She’s...Very smart. She’s at Uni now, going into her 2nd year at a prestigious Uni. She’s the most beautiful girl I’ve ever met, she’s soft like an angel and nobody would realise she’s such a damn nerd...And I think she’s crushing or dating Steve.” she mumbled, downing a shot.“Woaw, she sure sounds like a nice girl. You know...I think you should tell her. You never know who she likes, do you? And assumptions aren’t always what they look like. Also...Who the hell would choose Steve over you? You’re a million dollar babe, okay? Steve is just a...A...” you tried to find the perfect word, but she beat you to it, with a gentle smile on her face. “A dingus?”“Oh, gosh, yeah, that was it! Nice one, Robin!” you high fived her, but ended up losing balance and lazily hugging her, giggling.“Do you like Steve, Y/N?” she asked, making you laugh.“Steve? Yeah, he’s like, my best friend and all, what’s not to like about him? He’s an idiot but he saved my baby brother so now we’re friends.” you explained, making her nod at you, looking at you without breaking eye contact.“Yes, but...Do you...Like him? Like-Love him?” she pressed on, making you gag and snort.“Ew, no, jeez, it would be like dating Dustin. So awkward and weird. No way in hell...Besides...The crush I have on a girl? You’re that girl, Robin. I’ve been thinkin’ ‘bout you the whole damn year and I couldn’t get you out of my mind. I was just too much of a coward to ever say it out loud, but this idiot here and the other mini-idiot kept pestering me to finally ask you out...Guess I needed to get tipsy as hell to get that courage, huh?”  you grinned shyly, burying your face in the crook of her neck.“Wanna have our first date tomorrow, then? Go to the movies, eat something, walk around, go to the arcade, stargaze at night...” she offered, making you put your arms around her neck and kiss her cheek.“Sounds like the perfect date, if you ask me.” you hugged her tightly, making her lay on the floor so you could cuddle up to her easier.“Huh...This was so easy...And to think I was jealous on Harrington ‘cause I thought you liked him. So stupid.” she snorted, making you giggle, caressing her cheek.“Steve...Who? He’s nothing compared to you, so forget about him. Tonight it’s just the two of us, this annoyingly loud music that’s gonna give me a hangover migrane very soon, and this vodka that just screams to be downed in one go...Uh...What was I saying?”  you raised your eyebrow, a bit confused, having lost your train of thought.“Just that you love me, dear. Just that. And I love you too and I’m glad you got drunk enough to confess to me.” she leaned on her side, pressing her plump and soft lips to yours softly, a sweet smile gracing her features.“Damn, you’re beautiful, Robin. Will you be my girlfriend?” you asked, making her chuckle a bit, kissing your forehead.“Any day, any time, love. Any time.” she answered, softly.“Oi, guys, what the hell is going on here?! I know you love each other, but come on, don’t make this +18, okay? ...Argh, never mind, just go sleep in the bedroom, I’ll sleep on the couch...Jeez...” he groaned, drinking some water and crashing on the couch with a pout.“What, Harrington, are you jealous I’m dating Y/N and you’re not?” she smirked as you two sat up, her arm around your waist, putting you very close to her.“Nahh, not jealous, just happy for you. About time, really, she’s been gushing about you all year over the phone, I was about ready to just tell you myself about all this.” he shrugged, ushering the two of you to the bedroom.“I have a TV in my room, so we can watch some really good slasher movies and cuddle?” you asked, kissing her again.“Dream date!” she smirked, dragging you to your bedroom, ready to get the night started with her new girlfriend.

Hi, I'm late to the party but if you are still interested in doing the bookish asks: 1 and 7 + 13 + 18. I hope you have a good day!!!
It’s never too late!! (the book meme was back here, icymi)
1. Which book would you consider the best book you’ve ever read and why?
“Best” is such a subjective term.
On one hand, every single person who has ever met me in real life would call me a huge liar if I didn’t at least mention Infinite Jest. I love Infinite Jest. It blew my head off my shoulders. I think about it all the time, I talk about it incessantly.  I read it twice in two years and I imagine I was absolutely insufferable at that time. It is a work of genius, an achievement beyond the bounds of normal humans. It is simultaneously extremely prescient (I have thought about the section about masks for video calls literally every day of the pandemic) and spectacularly wrong (the rise of Netflix would make people go watch a duck pond turn over, REALLY?) That being said, DFW was a very troubled man and a deeply problematic one. The book is far too white and male, and it has been championed by a particular breed of Shitty Dudes. To be honest, it’s not even a book. It’s the negative space of a book, a Fourier Transform of a book. I wish everyone would read it, and I make it a personal point to never, ever tell anyone to read it. But if you do, I am absolutely here to discuss the filmography of J.O. Incandenza at any time.
I read The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemison shortly after it won a Hugo in 2016, and I knew, upon reading it, that it was the most important speculative fiction book of my generation. It is everything specfic is supposed to be-- to challenge your place in the world, to make you feel both complicit and cheated by the systems around you, to make you rage at injustice, to make you want to change things. It is a very upsetting series-- many awful things happen to the main characters. I don’t recall it being particular gross or gory, just devastating. One of the central themes is the way that mothers try and fail to protect their children, and I read it at a time when I had small babies and I burst into tears constantly. Anyway, it’s an incredible set of books, but it’s not fun to read. As a bonus, as far as I can tell from interviews and her Twitter, N.K. Jemison is a very smart and cool person.
Finally, to round out the set: every time I read Howl’s Moving Castle, I am struck with what a perfect novel it is. It is small and cozy, exciting and sweet and weird and funny. If I could choose any novel in the world to have written, it would be Howl’s Moving Castle.
7. Have you ever despised something you have read?
Oh, boy, have I!
I can hold a grudge against a book much longer than I could ever hold a grudge against a person! In my old age, I have gotten in the habit of giving up on things that I am not enjoying, which has caused me to chill out a lot, but I do have some old hate-faves!
I used to hate Game of Thrones. I threw the second one across the room after some witch lady gave birth to some evil smoke. But these days, I just really feel for the fans, who seem like really nice folks. They got a shitty last season and they’re never going to get the last of those books. I also feel for G.R.R. Martin, because I can definitely imagine getting that far along with something and then pbbting on the floor, and I cannot bring myself to feel anything bad for him.
The Road was almost a good book. I will be honest, I only read it because I am deeply in love with the Fleet Foxes song White Winter Hymnal. The mechanics of cannibalism as so poorly envisioned in The Road. Look, I do not like thinking about cannibalism. I hate cannibalism. There are only two zombie movies I will watch and I want nothing to do with any Hannibal-related property. But The Road’s ideas about cannibalism is so bad that even I am offended by it. I was extremely gratified when my very specific complaints appeared in this classic The Toast piece.
The last book I hated was something by Brandon Sanderson that I hated so much that I refuse to look up the title. All the magic was color based, and there was one pretty cool lady fighter character who got upset because she trained so hard that she got really ripped and didn’t think she was pretty anymore. I can’t believe I finished that book.
13. How do you chose which book to read next?
I used to be a really well-rounded reader. I read a lot of non-fiction, mostly history of science, and the sort Malcolm Gladwell stuff that was popular in early aughts. Around the time of the first Ferguson protests, I made a practice of reading a lot of Black authors and non-fiction about Black people, for about a year. I would try to alternate books that met my reading aspirations with more “dessert” reading-- fluffy stuff, re-reading old faves, when something new by a beloved author would come out. I have had a couple of friends write books and I do make it a priority to buy and read them. Also, if a friend specifically asks me to read something because they want to talk about it, I will also prioritize it, this is my love language.
Anyway, after the 2016 election, my brain broke, I could no longer handle anything difficult and bad in my leisure time and I read exclusively YA for about a year. I kinda stopped reading books entirely in 2019 when I was obsessively writing fanfic, but I have gotten back into it lately. I choose what to read entirely based on whimsy. I have been reading Jane Austen books all summer, and I’m gonna read Sense and Sensibility next. It’s sitting on the coffee table, I just need to actually open it up.
18. Did you enjoy the Hunger Games?
The Hunger Games were... fine? I read a lot of YA, and they aren’t my favorites by any means, but they were exciting and I remember reading through them really fast. (I hesitate to say I *enjoyed* them, because they are not very fun books). Probably my hottest Hunger Games take is that I think they would have been substantially improved if they hadn’t been written in the first person.
The thing about Katniss is that she is honestly not a smart person. She’s a dummy. I... love this actually. Young women are so rarely allowed to stupid in media. It’s so much more common to see the Hermiones-- the girl who is smart and level-headed and sensible, where her male companions are fun and relatable and dumb as rocks. Katniss gets manipulated a lot-- that’s what the book is about, but it’s not in a dudes-trying-to-get-in-her-pants way, it’s in a society-trying-to-turn-her-into-a-tool, which is also a plotline that girls don’t get. Unfortunately, because it’s written in the first person, it’s pretty easy to get frustrated with the character, or feel like the book or the author is stupid, rather than that there is this dim bulb character getting led around by the nose. I think a third-person narration could give a more forgivable perspective on her. Katniss has a lot of good qualities-- she is brave and loyal and wants to do what’s right, and I think the books would be better served to make you, the reader, get righteously angry at the way she is being exploited, than to try to give you a view inside her head. I think this is also why the movies came out pretty good, although, to be fair, I think I only saw the first one.

In this chapter, Scorpia gets a song. It’s an IRL song, and you can listen to it here: Twiddle
...
“Do you know any other songs?” Scorpia asked.
It wasn’t that she didn’t like Sea Hawk’s personal theme song. It was just that listening to it for days in a row was making her kinda, sorta… absolutely hate that song.
Emily warmed up her pain plasma gun and fired a warning shot off the port side of the ship, then pivoted on her immobile leg to stare down the musical pirate.
Scorpia placed a calming pincer on the bot’s dome. “I think what Emily is trying to say is that we’ve heard that one a lot, and if you don’t know any other songs, maybe we should just sail in silence for a bit.”
Looking out across the water at the wake created by Emily’s warning shot, Sea Hawk swallowed awkwardly. The refurbished Horde bot was highly opinionated and not shy about expressing herself. He looked to Scorpia, seeking a compromise. “Alright, well, do you know any sea shanties?”
Taping a pincer against her lips, Scorpia thought. “Well, I did hear one sung around Redwater Bay once…”
A Horde song.
Sea Hawk was concerned. That did not stop him from plastering a crud-eating grin on his face and suggesting, “Well, why don’t you sing for a bit.”
“Really!?” It was wrong how excited the former Horde Force Captain sounded at the suggestion. “You’ll let me sing? And you won’t get annoyed. Or tell me I need to focus. Or remind me that we’re on a mission and have a job to do. Or ask how I’m a Force Captain.” She wasn’t a Force Captain anymore. “Or anything like that?”
“I won’t.” Sea Hawk promised. He did, however, move across the deck to the helm –the complete opposite end of the ship form her- under the pretext of checking the wind and their heading. He had no idea what this Horde shanty was going to be and he liked to have an excuse ready on hand to politely ask her to stop if need be. “Let’s hear it.”
Scorpia cleared her throat and tried to remember the lyrics.
“Oh you hear a lot of stories 'bout the sailors and their sport. About how every sailor has a girl in every port. But if you added two and two, you'd figure out right quick, it's just because the girls all have a lad on every ship.”
Sea Hawk raised an eyebrow. It didn’t seem all that bad. Certainly much more tame and cute compared to what he was expecting from a song sung in the Fright Zone’s Redwater Bay. He was far less apprehensive and in better spirits when Scorpia launched into the chorus.
“And it's twiddle ee ai dee ai dee ai. “Twiddle ee ai dee ei. “It's often times a man will leave you broken with dismay. “And it's twiddle ee ai dee ai dee ai. “Twiddle ee ai dee ei. “There's other things to twiddle when the men have sailed away.”
Wait… Sea Hawk straightened at the helm, not quite sure if he was disliking this song now for entirely different reason that had nothing to do with the Horde. This song wasn’t about… what he thought it was about… was it?
“Lucky Annie was a lady who'd been pleased by many men. “They all would sail away but then they'd come right back again. “But if they never sailed her way she really didn't care. “Cause she knows you don't need a man to twiddle under there.”
Oh. Yeah. This song was totally about what Sea Hawk thought it was about. Sea Hawk plastered that crap-eating grin back on his face, hoping Scorpia would assume he was enjoying himself and he thought about Mermista and how she didn’t really seem to enjoy his company unless she needed something from him, and even then, she acted like he was a great inconvenience. She certainly never needed him to… ‘twiddle under there’, as the song said.
“So next time you're with a lady and she takes you to her bed, “Be sure to please her well, and remember what we've said. “For if you do not treat her right, then know that this is true: “Us ladies all can have our fun without involving you!”
Scorpia ran through the chorus two more times before the song ended. She looked up at the rest of the crew, to gauge her song’s reception. She hadn’t sung –anything- in years, and this little sea chanty she barely remembered the lyrics too wasn’t exactly her best work. She hoped she didn’t do too bad.
Emily let out an odd sort of digital chirping sound that might have been clapping. She certainly seemed to have liked it.
Sea Hawk just kept up that crap-eating grin. “That was… not what I was expecting from a Horde song.”
Reaching up a pincer, Scorpia scratched the back of her head awkwardly. “Well, the Fright Zone’s only been under Hordak’s control for about twenty years or so. Before that, my family was the ruling power of the territory. The Fright Zone had its own culture, and art, and music, and folktales, and all that fun stuff.”
That crud-eating grin melted away, morphing into an expression of empathy. Not unlike what they shared during their time in the Northern Reach. “The Queendom of Scorpiones, right?” Sea Hawk vaguely remembered seeing an old pre-Horde map in a rubbish heap in Salineas wherein the Fright Zone was labeled ‘Scorpiones’. “What was it like?”
“Honestly? I don’t know. I was only, like, a year old when my mother abdicated and gifted Hordak with the Black Garnet as a display of fealty.” She explained. “I don’t actually have any memories of the Fright Zone before the Horde. Just what older people tell me.”
That was so sad! Sea Hawk felt himself begin to tear-up. He wanted to sing another song to lighten the mood and maybe lift Scorpia’s spirits.
Except Scorpia didn’t really seem all that upset about it. Like she said, she had no memories of Scorpiones before it became ‘the Fright Zone’. She didn’t feel like she’d ‘lost’ anything. As far as she was concerned there was nothing to have lost. It was hard to carry nostalgia for a place or time you never saw. There was no feeling of hiraeth.
Scorpia only shrugged. Almost as if she didn’t even care that much. “Nations rise and fall all the time. I heard the Crimson Wastes used to be a lush woodsy Queendom before it was turned into the desert it is now. Dryl used to be an industrial mining dystopia built on the backs of slaves before Entrapta took over. Lonnie’s in charge of the Fright Zone now and is already rebuilding it in the image of what she thinks an efficient military state should be. Countries change hands and then just change in general. That’s the way things are.”
“But the Fright Zone used to be your family’s Queendom.” Sea Hawk reminded her. “Don’t you. I donno… wanna take it back? I mean, now that Hordak’s out of the picture. That places you back in power, right?”
Tapping her pincer on her lips again, Scorpia thought about that. Her in charge of the Fright Zone. Her responsible for all that technology and industry. All the weapons and vehicles. The cities and the land. The soldiers, and the workers, the people in general. She compared it to her own experiences as a Force Captain, commanding and managing vehicles and soldiers on a smaller scale. She remembered that one day she went almost out of her mind trying to find armor for soldiers that refused to fight so that Catra could plan an attack that never ended up happening.
Scorpia shook her head. “Nah. I’m a field commander. I work best out in the open and with small groups. I don’t think I could rule a whole territory.” She admitted. “Let Lonnie keep the Fright Zone. She already seems like she’s doing a better job than I ever could or Hordak ever did. She smart and adaptable, and I’m…” for some reason the image of Catra threatening her with a stun baton flashed through her mind “…slow. I’m slow at figuring things out. With people.”
That was a sobering comment and it made Sea Hawk pause and look inward at himself and his own relationships with people. “I’m slow at that too.” He finally concluded. “Mermista only ever wanted to spend time with me what she needed something from me. She wasn’t manipulative about it or anything. She flat out told me, in words, ‘no you’re just my ride’ and I ignored it and only heard what I wanted to hear. Until, finally, she wouldn’t even let me hang out at the palace when she had her friends over.”
“I guess, people are kind like nations.” Scorpia muttered. “People act differently depending on who they’re with, just like countries are different depending on who’s in charge. Catra was always so angry whenever we’d run into Adora. But when she was with me, or Lonnie, Kyle and the team, she was better. Calmer. More social. Less discontent. People change depending on who they’re with just like countries do.”
They lapsed into a forlorn silence. Both reflecting on how the people they loved were different around other people. Or how they themselves were different depending on who they were with.
Emily gave a sober little trill. Even she recognized that she had been different before she met Entrapta.
The people a person –or robot- meets change them. Sometimes only temporarily, sometimes only for the space of that meeting. Or, sometimes, irrevocably for the rest of their lives. It all depended on the people and the meeting.
“Catra always wanted to win.” Scorpia announced without prompting. “But she didn’t actually want to be happy.” A pensive frown. “I think, if I’m going to try liking someone again, I need to find someone who wants to be happy.”
Sea Hawk paused a bit longer, still reflecting on himself and his own failed relationship before announcing, “Mermista and I didn’t really have that much in common. I mean, she’s ruler of the seas, and I’m a sailor. It kinda just made sense for me to be in love with her. You know the old cliché about the sailor in love with a sea goddess.” He gave a self-deprecating laugh. “I guess I was more in love with the idea of Mermista than Mermista herself. If I’m gonna fall in love again, I have to look for someone I share common interests with.”
“Shame they don’t offer a ‘romance orientation’ huh?” She joked, remembering how helpful Force Captain Orientation had been when she was first promoted.
“Orientation? Heck! They should offer a full-length class!” He agreed.
They shared a subdued laugh, the mood lightening up again. Not quite as light as it was before, but certainly not as grim and sober as they were just a few short moments ago.
There was a moment’s pause to appreciate the fact that they each had someone who understood them and they could commiserate with. Maybe after this was all over they could still be friends. And when they were each ready to get back in the dating pool, they could go to one another for a second opinion on the women they chose to date so that neither one set themselves up for heartbreak again.
Sea Hawk brushed some non-existent dust off his white shirt. “Welp, we’re about to cross over into the Growling Sea.” He announced. “I’ll need to be back at the helm.”
“Uh, yeah.” Scorpia agreed. She certainly didn’t know what to expect from a place called the ‘Growling’ Sea.
Swift Wind landed on a grassy cliff overlooking the ocean.
Not just because he would need a rest before flying three people all the way across the sea.
They all needed a moment to get their bearings. Adora wanted to give the rest of them the rundown of what Beast Island was like and what they could expect. She had never been herself, but back during the five minutes she was a Force Captain before she defected, she did receive a memo about it. She wanted to take an opportunity to strategize with the others and come up with a plan –not that any of their plans ever seemed to work, but it just made her feel more confident to have one.
Bow was not-so-low-key freaking out that they may-or-may-not have kidnapped Entrapta’s heir from their home. Yeah, Dak chose to go with them. Wanted to go with them. And was an active participant in their escape from the castle. Not just releasing him and Adora from the dungeon, but getting the sword and their other weapons back from the occupying Horde, and fighting off Imp and the rest of the Horde that tried to stop them from leaving. So, Dak at least, did not feel like they were kidnapped. But Dak was still a child, and Bow and Adora were (also still technically children) closer to adults and he had to wonder if they might have accidentally manipulated Dak into doing what they wanted. Bow needed to take a few minutes to work his feelings out.
Dak was anxious to get the still unconscious Imp out of their tool bag and examine the little deamon to make sure he was okay and not permanently damaged. Imp had been Dak’s companion consistently for their entire life thus far. The hybrid’s earliest memories were of Imp helping Scorpia to smuggle them out of the Fright Zone. Of Imp sitting with them while Scorpia tried to teach Dak how to feed themself and use the toilet. Of Imp trying to teach them how to hunt as best as the tiny deamon could. Then, in the heat of the moment, Dak struck Imp on the head because the little deamon was trying to prevent them going with Adora and Bow to rescue mother. Dak saw the android’s eyes go staticy and short out. They hoped they didn’t kill Imp!
The hybrid unzipped their tool bag, while Adora started gathering stones from the ground and arranging them in a circle in the glass.
“Okay, this is Beast Island.” She announced, then looked up to make sure the others were paying attention.
Swift Wind was eating grass.
Bow was biting his nails, and glancing from Dak to the direction they’d just come, and looking worried.
Dak was laying the winged troll in the glass and examining him.
“Guys! Focus!” She snapped.
Swift Wind lifted his head to give her this look like, ‘If I have to carry all three of you flightless bipeds across an ocean, I’m gonna need a snack and a rest.’ Then gave a very equine snort and went back to eating grass.
Bow kinda hugged himself. “I think we’re kidnappers.” He muttered. “What if we’re bad guys? How are we gonna be able to face the other Princesses? How am I gonna face my dads? They raised me better than this. What am I gonna do!?”
Dak did not look up from Imp. But they were the only one to assure Adora, “I’m paying attention.”
Adora rolled her eyes. She was begging to realize that, to spite being the child of Lord Hordak, leader of the Evil Horde, Dak fit in with their group dynamic almost seamlessly. Clearing her throat, Adora tried to continue. “This is Beast Island. The Horde have a prison compound on the south coast. Here.” She stuck a stick in the ground to mark the location of the compound. “The main entrance and exit connects directly to the harbor. They’ll be expecting a frontal assault from there. But, aside from the tyrosours, none of the beast on Beast Island can fly, so security will be more relaxed on the roof.”
Bow paused in his freaking out over possibly being a kidnapper to freak out over something else. “Wait, did you say some of the man-eating beasts of Beast Island can fly?”
“She said just the tyrosours fly.” Dak supplied, still not looking up from Imp’s inert body. Apparently, the hybrid really was paying attention even if they didn’t look like they were.
“Right.” Nodded Adora. “Which is why we’re gonna swoop down on Swift Wind and break in through the roof.”
“Do I get a say in this?” Swift Wind cut in, looking up from the grass he was eating. “I’d at least appreciate it if you consulted me before just deciding that I’m gonna be dive-bombing Horde compounds while also dodging human-eating beasts that fly as well as I do.”
A deep and gravely groan of frustration cut upwards from Adora’s throat. “No one said the tyrosours would even be there. All I said was that they’re the only beasts on Beast Island that fly. I never said they would be anywhere near the prison. The beasts are supposed to keep to the jungle. We probably won’t even see any of the Beat Island beasts at all. Okay?”
Bow and Swift Wind exchanged a glance. They had become genre savvy enough by this point to know that, now that one of them said it out loud, not only would they encounter a Beast Island beast, they would probably encounter the Great Beast itself.
“Don’t made that face!” Adora snapped.
“We weren’t looking at you.” Swift Wind informed her.
“I know.” She snapped. “I know what you were saying to each other.”
Both Bow and Swift Wind opened their mouths to reply. But before another word could escape either of them, they were cut off by the other member of their party.
“Ah, ha!” Dak exclaimed triumphantly. The hybrid had found a seam in the skin covering Imp’s head. A line concealed behind a pointed ear, and running up to the tuft of hair on the deamon’s head. Hooking their talons in the seam, Dak managed to peel the android’s face off, revealing the circuitry and workings underneath.
Swift Wind, Adora, and Bow all forgot their conversation in the wake of such… mechanical gore?
“I’m still listening.” Dak informed them, still not looking up from Imp. “Keep going. We probably won’t see the Beast Island beasts.”
All three of them just stood there, staring, wide-eyed, gap-mouthed, at this child that looked no older than ten years peel the face and hair off of what had previously looked like a nightmare toddler.
Holding Imp’s naked robotic head in their hands, the hybrid used their hair to reach into their tool bag. Pulling out thin and delicate instruments for small detail work on sensitive pieces of tech.
If the others asked what Dak was doing, the hybrid would not be able to tell them. They didn’t have the words to describe that they were concerned they might have knocked something loose or broken some vital inner component when they hit the deamon. They could not name the parts they were trying to repair, or the tools they were using. But that didn’t mean they didn’t know what they were doing. After spending all their free time in the Locked Room after it was opened, Dak had developed an almost instinctual understanding of robotics and machines. Tech ‘spoke’ to them in a way that could not be explained to others.
Bow was the first to recover from the shock of watching –what he always thought was Hordak’s pet, or baby, or both- get its face peeled off. He knelt next to Dak, always eager to learn something that could improve his own knowledge and understanding of tech. “Can I help.”
One of the tools held in Dak’s hair pressed against something and one of the deamon’s ears slid out, revealing memory boards that looked like they hadn’t been part of the android’s original design. Like they were extra data storage added at a later date after Imp’s construction.
“Hold his head for me.” Dak passed the android to the archer. They laid down on their belly to be on an even level with the now open head and its extra memory boards.
It looked like Dak’s hit did indeed knock something loose. The connectors that kept the extra memory plugged into the rest of the processing array had come apart. Dak reached in a couple thin tendrils of hair. Literally, hair thin. They reattached the connections and slid the extra memory boards back into the place. Picked up one of those tiny and delicate tools and, with the deftness of a surgeon, soldered them into place so that –barring another trauma- they would not get knocked loose again.
The moment they were in place, Imp’s mouth opened and a recording began to play. The voice sounded like Hordak’s. Like Hordak’s, but no quite Hordak’s. Like Hordak if he were more… tired? Regretful? …Remorseful? Those were certainly emotions none of them could imagine the original Hordak feeling, never mind allowing to seem into his voice when he knew he was being recorded.
“If you’re hearing this, Zero-Zero-Three, then I’ve gone to join the All High Host.” Said the voice that was almost a clone of Hordak’s voice. “I always knew it was a dangerous game I was playing, and if you’re sitting in my cabinet seat right now, then it’s a game you’re going to have to learn to play well. You’re a slow learning, Zero-Zero-Three, but you do learn. Learn quickly, because in this game you either win –or you die. I like to think I played it very well for many years. Clearly, I did not win-“
The recording cut off abruptly when Dak slid Imp’s ear back into the place.
“Wait, I wanted to hear that.” Bow blinked at the abrupt cut off. “I didn’t think the Horde played games.”
“Training games.” Both Dak and Adora supplied in almost perfect unison.
The hybrid turned their head to look at her. Their eyes meeting and a weird kind of understanding passed between them.
Adora had been raised in the Horde. They did not play games for fun. They trained. They spared, had skirmishes, held mock battles. There was a points system, or one hit matches. They were war games. Battle games. Training games. But they were not games for fun and leisure.
Dak did not grow up in the Horde. At least, not in the same way that Adora had. There was a Horde presence in their home, in the very castle they grew up in. But the Horde was not in control of Dak’s training. Dak was trained by Imp. Trained in stealth. In moving unseen. In tracking something that was trying to evade you. In catching quarry. Hunting games. At first, they had been fun games… until the hybrid developed other interests.
Imp’s eyes flickered for half a moment and Dak rolled the skin back over his face. Pulling the back half of skin-shell back up by the tuft of nylon-fiber hair. Dak was just making sure the seam in the skin was securely resealed when the flickering of the deamon’s eyes finally solidified into his normal golden-yellow glow.
Imp gave a screech of distress at finding himself in a completely different place from where he was when falling asleep. He leapt into the air, flapping on frantic wings. Flitting from one direction to the other, trying to get his bearings on where they were.
“Calm down.” Dak pleaded with the creature.
All that succeeded in doing was turning Imp’s distress on themself. The little deamon swooped down to snarl and chitter in the hybrid’s face. Shrieking, and squawking, sounding like a pack of angry monkeys rather than the one, singular, flying goblin he was.
What was master’s heir thinking? Aligning themself with the traitor and her companions! Imp was beside himself with frustration, and he let master’s heir know it.
“Wow.” Commented Swift Wind. “You kiss Hordak’s boots with that mouth.”
Turning away from the angry deamon, Dak blinked confused eyes at the horde. “I’m Hordak.”
“Other Hordak, little foal.” The stallion clarified.
By opening his mouth, Swift Wind effectively drew the deamon’s attention to him and before he knew it, the winged horde was getting his own face-full of angry screeching goblin baby. Squawking and chittering, growling and snarling. Making very animalistic sounds that the humans –and human hybrid- of their party couldn’t understand. But Swift Wind –the actual animal of their group- understood perfectly. He snorted, shooting a jet of warm air at the flapping deamon, unimpressed. “That’s exactly the kind of thing I’d expect from the minion of a despotic colonizer!”
Imp blinked at having a creature actually understand him for once. Most organic being just assumed his attempts to communicate were noise. He recovered quickly, and launched into another chittering and squawking rant.
“Oh, yeah? How’s that working out for ya so far?” The stallion gave an odd little shrug of his wings, as if the deamon was completely inconsequential.
Tendrils of hair wrapped themselves around Imp and before he knew what was happening, the little deamon was plucked out of the air and hugged tightly against Dak’s torso. “Imp, calm down.” The child pleaded. “We’re going to rescue mother.”
The android gave another squawk of protest.
“He doesn’t want you to rescue the Princess.” Swift Wind translated for everyone. “He wants you to assume control of the Horde and finish conquering Etheria.”
“Don’t want to.” Dak shook thier head. The hybrid looked down to address the struggling deamon in their arms when they repeated. “Don’t want to.”
Imp chittered out something quickly, almost frantically.
Everyone looked back up at Swift Wind for a translation, since his animal mind with a human intelligence somehow understood the alien android’s feral-sounding ‘language’.
“He says you’ll need the army.” Explained the stallion, looking confused. “…if the emperor opens the portal from his side?”
“The portal!” Now the deamon had Adora’s full and undivided attention. “But I closed the portal.”
She closed the portal. Saved the world from being un-made. Restored things to the way they were before the portal was opened. None of the Horde from the other side got through. That should have been the end of it. It was closed. She closed it. It was over. Done with.
Except, when was anything ever that simple?
Adora looked out across the ocean. Somewhere, on an island beyond those blue waves was the woman who built that portal in the first place. If it was possible for someone to open a portal from the other side, she would know.
Now, more than before, Adora needed to rescue Entrapta.

JUNO STEEL AND THE DRAGON’S DEN (PART TWO)
SOUND: RAIN. TRAIN ARRIVES, CREAKS TO A STOP. DOOR CLANKS OPEN.
CONDUCTOR: Ah, good evening, Traveler. And welcome… to The Penumbra. Take your seat, please, take your seat.
MUSIC: STARTS.
SOUND: DOOR CLANKS SHUT.
The junction lies just ahead, Traveler. If you’ll allow me just a moment.
SOUND: TRAIN WHISTLE.
(CHUCKLES) Well, next stop? Hyperion City.
SOUND: TRAIN MOVING.
A dragon that doesn’t spit fire; lions with mechanical skeletons; a security chief who makes her own staff decidedly insecure. At Polaris Park, nothing is as it seems – which makes things difficult when your job is to find out what’s true. If Detective Steel wants to survive, he’ll have to do just that: look past the holograms and the robotics and the lies to prove a killer is close by.
SOUND: TRAIN BRAKES. DOOR CLANKS OPEN, RAIN.
Our next stop: Juno Steel and the Dragon’s Den.
ALL SOUNDS: FADE OUT.
***
MUSIC: STARTS.
JUNO (NARRATOR): Ask any kid on Mars who the greatest hero of all time is and they’ll give you the same answer without blinking: Andromeda the Chainmail Warrior, the hero without a home, the lady on all the best lunchboxes. Every kid goes through a phase where they like Andromeda… and some even go through a phase where they want to be Andromeda.
One of those little saps grew up to be Juno Steel, private eye. Back when I was a kid, I used to put a colander on my head and wrestle my brother for hours while he roared like a dragon and spat all over my face. I always felt invincible back then, like nobody’d ever take me down, like I could do no wrong.
So you can tell I wasn’t a very smart kid, either.
SWIFT: This is the way out of the mountain. Watch your footing – this is supposed to be a drop, but, for us, it’s just going to be a nasty slope.
RITA: I guess this ride’s f-full’a nasty things, huh?
SWIFT: What was that, doll?
RITA: Nothin’!
JUNO (NARRATOR): Rita and I were at the home of the homeless hero right now: Polaris Park, a Northstar joint way out in the Martian desert. My employer, Ramses O’Flaherty, got most of his campaign funds from this place, and word on the street was someone was going to hit him right in the investors.
SWIFT: Careful you don’t trip, there. Try to hold onto something if you can – and that’s an offer, sweetheart.
JUNO (NARRATOR): That’s the ‘someone.’ Yasmin Swift, security chief of Polaris Park… the same park it seemed like she was trying to take down by sabotaging its star attraction. Sasha always told me I should get more interested in politics. Turns out all it took was some corporate warfare and a triple-homicide.
MUSIC: ENDS.
NARRATOR: Andromeda raced down the peak, feeling Draco’s hot breath on her neck!
RITA: I– I don’t know if I can ‘race,’ really! Feels like I can barely walk without breakin’ my little ankles…
SWIFT: You need to take a breather? I can scout ahead and—
JUNO: Nope, she’s good, thanks!
(QUIETLY) Come on, Rita, we can’t let her get too far ahead of us.
RITA: I’m tryin’, Mista Steel! But my heart’s goin’ ka-bum-bum-bum, and not in the fun way, more in the my-doctor’s-gonna-be-upset way, and our relationship is already rocky and—
SWIFT: It’s really no problem, Juno, I don’t mind.
JUNO: Just… stay within eyeshot, okay? I don’t want Rita to get lost again.
SWIFT: Alright, alright. I’ll be waiting down here.
SOUND: FOOTSTEPS DEPARTING.
RITA: Oh, boss, I’m so scared, hold me!
JUNO: Oof!
RITA: I just… it’s too scary! How can we keep walkin’ through this ride with her when she just roasted three people?
JUNO: Don’t really have a choice, Rita. We haven’t found any evidence yet. If the roasting didn’t happen in the dragon’s lair, we need her to show us where it did. So we’ve got to get her off guard – get her to talk about something she wasn’t planning on. Hopefully if we stay on her long enough, she’ll make some kind of mistake.
RITA: But… what if we make the mistake first?
JUNO: Oh, then she’ll definitely kill us.
RITA: Oh! Is that all?
NARRATOR (IN BACKGROUND): Andromeda raced down the peak, feeling Draco’s hot breath on her neck!
JUNO: Look. You said you wanted to come along, and I don’t know how to operate the terminals that control this stupid funhouse, so I need you to keep it together. Okay, Rita?
RITA: I know, and I do wanna help, it’s just… sometimes I look at her face and it’s just so pretty I forget she’s the bad guy.
JUNO: Bad people come in all kinds of packages.
RITA: Yeah, but it just seems like a waste when the package is so beauuuuuuutiful…
SOUND: SLAP.
Snap out of it, Rita!
JUNO: Hey, uh… you don’t have to hit yourself so hard—
RITA: ‘Course I do! You’re relyin’ on me, boss! Polaris Park’s relyin’ on me! That means every little kid on Mars– no! Every little kid in the galaxy is relyin’ on Rita! And I ain’t gonna let ‘em down. Now come on, time’s a-wastin’!
SOUND: FOOTSTEPS.
JUNO: …Huh.
SWIFT: Feeling better? We’re almost there.
NARRATOR: Andromeda raced down the peak, feeling Draco’s hot breath on her neck!
SWIFT: And that’s the last time you’ll have to hear that line, at least. Here’s the door.
SOUND: HEAVY DOOR SLIDES OPEN.
NARRATOR: The lions– lions– lions– village! Andromeda cheered as the– returned to the village! Liiiooooons—
SOUND: STATIC, ELECTRONIC GLITCHES.
RITA: Whoaaa. This room looks like it got kinda sick, boss!
SWIFT: Audio’s glitching out like crazy… can’t be good.
JUNO: Audio’s not the only thing that’s messed up – take a look at that cart. Banged-up and stuck in the side of one of these lions… looks like this thing flipped straight off the tracks.
SOUND: FOOTSTEPS.
SWIFT: This must have been from when the engineers were running empty carts before their test ride. (WHISTLES) Well, we should probably keep moving. Ride’s almost over, and there aren’t too many other places it could’ve killed them. And if we don’t find anything, I guess that dragon spits real fire after all.
RITA: But… it doesn’t. We just saw that it didn’t spit fire.
SWIFT: Did you? I don’t remember that. I remember a whole lot of fire, in fact. Don’t you?
RITA: B– but…
JUNO: Right, fire. That’s what dragons do, isn’t it?
SWIFT: Hey, uh… what are you up to over there, Juno?
SOUND: CLANKING.
JUNO: What P.I.s do: poke around. There’s all kinds of debris in this cart. Fur and plastic and… huh. Whaddaya know.
RITA: Is that a license?
JUNO: Torn ID tag. Looks like it belongs to Marina Ricci, Polaris Park Engineer. And there’s blood on it.
SWIFT: That’s… weird.
Ricci, huh? She left a month ago. Fired after I caught her stealing from the supply rooms. No clue why her tag would be all the way up here… huh.
JUNO: A month ago? That’s interesting – blood looks fresher than that. Like, sometime-today-fresh. What were the names of the engineers that the ride killed again?
SWIFT: I don’t know. I have a hard enough time managing my team without worrying about Vega’s, too. …You don’t think Ricci could’ve been behind this, do you?
JUNO (NARRATOR): While Swift was busy cooking up a piping hot conspiracy theory, I did her job for her.
SWIFT (IN BACKGROUND): She seemed pretty ticked off when I fired her, and… she did have a history of aggressive behavior—
THEIA: Topographical analysis complete.
SWIFT (IN BACKGROUND): —plus, she’d definitely know the Dragon’s Peak well enough to break it in all the right places.
JUNO (NARRATOR): And just like that, I had the answers.
SWIFT: Uh, Juno? You in there?
JUNO: If Marina Ricci is in here, it looks like she went that way.
RITA: But… there’s nothin’ over there, boss. The tracks go this way.
SWIFT: You need a doctor, Juno? You’re talking nonsense and your eye is, uh… a whole mess of colors.
JUNO: Cybernetic eye, Swift. All the worst investigators have ‘em. It’s what gives us the leg up we need to stay in this business. Without it I wouldn’t be able to tell you that there are four pretty clear sets of footprints in the grass walking from the cart to that patch of sky right over there.
RITA: But… they just disappear into the sky? Where do they go?
JUNO: It’s not the sky, Rita. Remember what our resident expert Yasmin Swift said: everything in here’s holograms or robotics or practical effects. Which means if it looks like the sky, there’s one thing we know about it: it isn’t the sky.
SWIFT: (SNORTS) Oh, come on. I saw someone on the tracks up by the peak. That must have been Ricci! Are we really going to let her keep running while you walk in circles because your eye’s glitching out?
JUNO: I don’t think it’s a glitch, Swift.
SOUND: TWO METAL TAPS.
Bingo.
SOUND: DOOR CREAKS OPEN.
A door hidden in the holograms… says ‘Maintenance’ on the inside. This must be a service hallway of some kind. You know about this, Swift?
SWIFT: Like I said, I haven’t been through here in years.
JUNO (NARRATOR): It was the first time I hadn’t seen even a hint of a smile on Swift’s face. Northstar trains ‘em good, but I had nearly thirty-nine years of experience pissing people off, so really, my win was inevitable.
But more importantly: I didn’t need a top-of-the-line cyber-eye to tell me she didn’t want us in there… and that meant I wanted to go in there as soon as possible.
RITA: I don’t know, Mista Steel, it’s pretty dark and cramped in there…
JUNO: Still, seems worth checking out, doesn’t it? Bloody ID badge, four sets of footprints… oh, hey, that’s enough for all three victims and the saboteur, isn’t it, Swift? Think we should check it out?
SWIFT: Hmph.
JUNO (NARRATOR): And that’s when I knew I’d rolled the dice one too many times. Because then the old Northstar smile came back, genuine as ever… and I saw a plan flickering in Yasmin Swift’s eyes.
SWIFT: Yeah. We should check it out. It’s narrow, though; we’ll have to walk single-file. I’ll go first, Juno’ll take up the rear. We can protect this pretty little number easier that way.
JUNO (NARRATOR): I couldn’t let her win, I thought. And that thought’s exactly why she won.
RITA: Boss?
JUNO: How about I go first? I’ve got the gun, and we don’t know who’s in there.
SWIFT: That’s a great idea, Juno! Go on in. Then you, doll.
JUNO (NARRATOR): So we were stuck.
I knew she was suspicious of us by this point, but she didn’t know for sure that we’d caught her. Until she was positive, she still had a thin hope of getting out of here looking innocent… and even if that hope was getting thinner by the second, it still gave her enough of a reason to keep up that friendly park cop act.
I wanted that act to stay on stage as long as possible. Security Chief Yasmin Swift at least had to pretend to want us alive. Triple-murderer Yasmin Swift? Not so much.
So we walked down the hall: me, then Rita, then Swift.
SOUND: ECHOEY BANGS & CLANKS. METAL CREAKING.
RITA: I don’t like those noises, Mista Steel… I swear, if I hear one more boom or bang or pop I’m gonna boom-bang-pop right outta my skiiiiiin!
SOUND: ROARS.
OH NO OH PLEEEEEEASE NO!
JUNO: Rita, it’s just the stupid ride. We can hear it through the walls.
NARRATOR: (MUFFLED) “You have done it!” roared Chief Leo. “My, this crown truly befits the Chief of the Kings of the Jungle! Now, Andromeda, I shall show you your portal home!”
RITA: Boss, that wasn’t what I—
SOUND: BLADE UNSHEATHING.
(GASPS)
JUNO: Damn it, are you gonna yell every time this ride sneezes?
NARRATOR: (MUFFLED) But even as Leo brought her to the portal, Andromeda felt guilt bubbling in her stomach.
RITA: That ain’t it, boss! It’s a kn-n-n—
SOUND: LOW ELECTRIC HUM.
(GASPS)
SWIFT: No need to jump, sweetheart. That was just me getting my stun knife ready. Thought I saw something in the shadows – I wanted to be… prepared.
RITA: (WHISPERING) Mista… Steel…!
JUNO: (GROWLS)
SWIFT: Door’s just ahead. Mind letting us in, Juno? The sooner we get out of here, the better – I don’t like not having a clear line of sight.
JUNO (NARRATOR): If I wanted to catch Swift red-handed, it’d have to be soon… and I’d have to use one of the Theia’s functions that I’d never touched before.
So I touched it.
THEIA: Rec Mode activated.
JUNO: (QUIETLY) Yes!
THEIA: Fifteen minutes. Remaining.
JUNO: (QUIETLY) No!
SWIFT: What was that, Juno?
JUNO: Uh… nothing. The door’s just… jammed.
SOUND: DOORKNOB RATTLING.
THEIA: Error. Cannot deactivate Rec Mode. Please wait for time. Out.
JUNO: (MUTTERING) I’ll give you a time out, you lousy eyeball!
SWIFT: Have you tried the doorknob?
JUNO: Ohhhhh.
SOUND: DOOR OPENS.
Look at that! It was pretty stupid of me, I guess.
SWIFT: Day’s still young. Plenty of time to act stupider. Not that I’d recommend it. Now move. Please.
JUNO: I’m goin’!
SOUND: FOOTSTEPS.
JUNO (NARRATOR): Through the door was what looked like a central control room: a big, imposing terminal stood on one side, gathering dust, and there were two carts lined up on a track that snaked out the room through a tunnel in one side. Backups or maintenance carts, I guessed.
A control room in a ride that controls itself; a maintenance room the maintainers never checked. Not a bad place to lay a trap you didn’t want anyone to see.
JUNO: You sure you never heard about this before, Swift? Seems like a pretty major part of Andromeda and the Dragon’s Peak.
SWIFT: A major part of its maintenance, from the look of it. But, I’m not maintenance.
JUNO: Seems like a pretty big security risk to have all of your surveillance footage centralized for anyone to access.
SWIFT: This doesn’t have to get ugly, you know.
RITA: Wh-what?
SWIFT: I mean I’m a patient woman, but I’m not gonna stand for insults. I said I didn’t know about this room, that means I didn’t know about this room. I don’t want this to get ugly. But if you want a fight, Juno—
RITA: Oww!
SWIFT: —there’s a way this shakes out that looks bad for everyone.
JUNO: Alright, alright. Point taken. So… how do we make this look better?
SWIFT: That’s… a good question.
You made an interesting point. This system is pretty insecure, isn’t it? Think it’s so insecure you could crack it?
RITA: Oh, no, no no no, not him. Mista Steel can barely enter his PIN number, which is 33332, so forget about a two-hundred-digit password—
SWIFT: Just a flimsy password? That’s no good. Hey, if that’s all that’s keeping this ride from turning into a murder weapon, it really is dangerous. So, why don’t you head over to the terminal, and enter the password like Rita tells you. And if it works, I’m gonna have some stern words with Vega later.
RITA: I-I could just enter it myself, Yasmin—
SWIFT: Nope, I think you’re gonna stay right here with me. Go ahead, Juno. Enter the password. Or else this might get ugly.
JUNO (NARRATOR): So I walked up to the terminal and Rita started reciting the password.
RITA: Three, five, A, X, omega, twelve—
SOUND: SLOW BEEPS.
JUNO (NARRATOR): For five minutes.
RITA: —W, backwards-W, C-with-a-little-tail-thingy, five, six, seven, eight, umlaut-with-no-u, zero, and that’s it.
JUNO: Finally.
SOUND: ERROR BEEP.
What the hell? You sure zero was the end of it, Rita?
RITA: What? Zero wasn’t the end. I said ‘that’s it,’ didn’t I? You were supposed to type ‘that’s it.’
JUNO: You’re kidding me.
Alright. From the top. One more time.
JUNO (NARRATOR): So we burned another five minutes. And all the while, Swift stayed silent, smiling, and Theia ticked down.
THEIA: Rec Mode has. Five minutes. Remaining.
JUNO: (MUTTERING) I know, I know…
SOUND: BEEPS.
RITA: …seven, eight, umlaut-with-no-u, zero, and T… H… A… T—
JUNO: Yep, yep, got it, thanks.
SOUND: SUCCESS BEEP.
(SIGHS) Finally.
SWIFT: You’re in. Good. So let’s try to think like the saboteurs… what would they meddle with first?
I’m guessing… the controls to the different power lines are at the bottom left-corner of the screen. Seems like it’d be good for everyone if you checked those out, Juno.
JUNO (NARRATOR): And then I knew why she wanted me to use the damn terminal. Because if she did it, her back would have to be to us for the time it took her to enter the password… whereas if Rita did it, she might actually be able to cause some damage. Me, on the other hand – looking at those flashing buttons and switches and numbers and lights made me feel like my cyber-eye was gonna spin right out of its socket.
But I had to act. And if I was gonna convict Swift for this, well…
THEIA: Rec Mode has. Three minutes. Remaining.
JUNO (NARRATOR): …I had to act now.
Luckily, I still had something up my sleeve. Because Juno Steel doesn’t know a hell of a lot about computers, but he did pass all of his computer classes, which means there’s one thing he does know how to do: bluff.
SWIFT: Well?
JUNO: Yeah, don’t know how to break it to you, Swift, but I’m not seeing any “power” options. Just a lot of stuff about backup security footage… d’you know anything about this?
SWIFT: Backup what?
JUNO: Yeah, it says it was all recovered from drive wipes within the past twenty-four hours. Weird, huh? Should I play one?
SWIFT: Don’t touch that screen.
JUNO: But this is what we’re looking for, isn’t it? Let’s see what happened to that weird upturned cart earlier today.
SWIFT: Hands off the screen or your very pretty secretary gets it!
SOUND: BLADE UNSHEATHING, LOW HUM.
RITA: (SCREAMS)
SOUND: GUN COCKING.
JUNO: Drop the knife, Swift. The game’s up.
SWIFT: I told you it didn’t have to go this way, Juno. I don’t want to do this.
JUNO: Then don’t.
SWIFT: You’re not really in a position to be making demands. You messed up. It didn’t have to go this way. Now, slide that gun over to me, and then delete the footage like a good little lady.
JUNO: But—
SWIFT: Now!
RITA: Ow, ow, ow!
JUNO: Fine.
SOUND: CLUNK. SLIDE.
There. Happy?
SWIFT: It’s been a bad day, but at least it’s almost over. Now, delete the footage.
JUNO: What’s it show that you’re so scared of, Swift? The part where you waited for the engingeers who rode through earlier and flipped their cart? Or the part where you led them down the hallway at knifepoint?
SWIFT: Sure, I dragged the engineers in here. And sure, somewhere between here and the end of the track I… I mean, they got roasted. But knowing that isn’t gonna do you any good anymore, Juno, because you’re gonna wipe that evidence, and then you’ll have nothing. At. All.
JUNO (NARRATOR): And right on cue, my time ran out.
SOUND: BEEP.
THEIA: Rec Mode. Complete. The last fifteen minutes of video recording have been sent to. Ramses O’Flaherty. For analysis.
JUNO: Sure, Swift. Nothing. You want me to hit delete, here?
SWIFT: I do.
JUNO: There. Done.
SWIFT: …No it isn’t.
JUNO: What?
SWIFT: The terminal didn’t beep when you deleted it.
JUNO: Uh… “beep.”
SWIFT: I can see your mouth moving.
JUNO: No you can’t.
RITA: Ow! Boss!! Stop goofin’ around!!
JUNO: Alright, alright, I admit it. There were never any backups. I was bluffing, alright? I’ll go to your stupid power menu.
SOUND: BEEP.
There.
SWIFT: It’s about time. Now, play nice for three steps and we can be done with this nightmare, alright?
JUNO: Whatever you say.
SWIFT: Good. Activate Emergency Cart B.
JUNO (NARRATOR): There were five power lines on the screen. One: ‘Lighting and Audio’; two: ‘Carts and Robotics’; three through five: ‘Emergency Carts A, B, and C’. Only ‘Lighting and Audio’ was on. I tapped ‘Emergency Cart B.’
SOUND: BEEP.
And the first of the two carts in line started rolling away.
SOUND: WHEELS CLACKING ON TRACKS.
SWIFT: Good. Now, step two: catch.
JUNO: Huh?
SWIFT: (GRUNTS)
SOUND: QUICK FOOTSTEPS.
RITA: Whooaaa!
JUNO: Rita!
Oof!
SWIFT: And as for step three…
Hup!
SOUND: THUMP.
You stay here, and I catch my ride!
JUNO: Damn it, Swift! Get back here!
I gotta go after her, Rita.
RITA: Boss, I ain’t gonna let you run off again.
JUNO: No, you’re not. You’re gonna help me run off again, from here. I need you to.
SOUND: RUNNING FOOTSTEPS.
Hup!
SOUND: THUMP.
RITA: Mista Steel! Get outta that cart!
JUNO: No can do. Think you can find a way to make this cart go faster than that one?
RITA: I… I mean, sure, it’d be as easy as activating Emergency Cart C – that’s your cart – and then, well I couldn’t do it all at once but if I got through the security protocol, I should be able to write a quick little virus that’ll sap power slowly from Cart B, and put it into your cart, so you keep goin’ faster, and it keeps goin’ slower, and—
JUNO: Sure, cool, whatever. Just do it.
RITA: But Mista—
JUNO: Now!
RITA: Oh, alright!
SOUND: KEYBOARD CLICKING. BEEP. WHEELS CLACKING.
Have fun on the ride without me, boss.
JUNO: I won’t. Watch me on the cameras, will ya?
RITA: Mista Steel, I am not just gonna watch you have fun.
JUNO (NARRATOR): Way off in the tunnel I could see Swift’s cart, and beyond her the green plains of Lion Village all over again. In the distance I heard the ride’s next room:
NARRATOR: (MUFFLED) But just as Andromeda was about to enter the portal back home, she heard the beating of terrible wings. “Draco!” the lions screamed. “The dragon is attacking!”
JUNO (NARRATOR): And then I had a really unpleasant thought. Swift knew Rita could operate the terminal, so she must have expected I’d come after her, and she must have had a plan. And then there were the engineers, who she’d dragged to this track before she roasted them – which explained where the missing Emergency Cart A went.
Then my own eye caught it an instant before Theia did: up there ahead, two little sparks, snapping on the walls of the tunnel.
I hit the deck just in time.
SOUND: FLAMES WHOOSHING.
Jets of fire screamed over me. I managed to duck the main blast, but sparks spilled over the side of the cart and caught on my coat. I flapped it out as best I could, and then the sunlight poured in. It was a relief to be out in Andromeda and the Dragon’s Peak again, where the fire was just hot air and nothing was what it appeared to be. Not even Security Chief Yasmin Swift, whose cart I was getting closer to every second, and who had my gun aimed at my head.
SOUND: BLASTER SHOT.
JUNO: Whoa!
SOUND: THUD.
SWIFT: (CALLING) Come out of there, Juno! You are not gonna make it to the end of this ride!
JUNO: (SHOUTING) Good. Isn’t there a big drop at the end? I hate drops.
SOUND: BLASTER SHOT.
SWIFT: (CALLING) Cart’s not thick enough to deflect laser fire! All I have to do is keep shooting holes in it, and one of them has to hit you!
SOUND: BLASTER FIRE.
NARRATOR: “You warned me, Andromeda, but I did not listen,” said Chief Leo. “Go on! Go through your portal home! The dragon will rage, and the lions will pay for my greed.”
JUNO: (SHOUTING) No, but seriously, how long do we have until the drop? I-I hate that sick feeling in your stomach when—
SOUND: BLASTER SHOT.
Well, guess you’re bored of that joke, huh?
NARRATOR: Andromeda looked at her portal. Home was within reach. Polaris at last. But a hero heeds the call.
SWIFT: (CALLING) Damn it! Sit still!
JUNO (NARRATOR): Swift’s cart banged into the doors to the next room and she lost her footing for a second—
SOUND: BANGS.
JUNO (NARRATOR): —just long enough for me to see what was comin’ next. A raging storm – leaves and lions tumbling in the wind. Carts ahead of us stretching up, and up, and up, and a robotic dragon looming overhead. Swift’s cart was slowing down, and mine was speeding up. In just a few seconds, it would be within reach.
SOUND: WIND BLOWING.
NARRATOR: And so Andromeda stepped out into the storm, and she shouted:
ANDROMEDA: I stole your treasure, Draco! Now fight me!
NARRATOR: And the dragon’s winds whisked her into the air.
SWIFT: Alright, Juno: stand up, and give up! …How the hell did you get so close?
JUNO: Your cart’s slowing down, Yasmin! Hup!
SOUND: THUD.
Ow!
SWIFT: Real graceful.
JUNO: Yeah, not my best, I’m a little distracted. Did I mention I don’t like big drops?
SOUND: BLADE UNSHEATHING.
Whoa!
SOUND: LOW ELECTRIC HUM.
SWIFT: This could still end easily. Stand still, and I’ll make sure you don’t have to feel anything.
JUNO (NARRATOR): Luckily I’d learned a thing or two from watching someone better than Swift work his way around a knife. She cut a good gash into my shoulder—
SOUND: SLASH.
JUNO: Agghh!!
JUNO (NARRATOR): —but it was nothing twenty stitches and a month of physical therapy couldn’t fix. Besides, she only took fifty percent of my shoulders, and in the brawl, I managed to get one hundred percent of her weapons.
JUNO: Hah!
SOUND: METALLIC CLATTER.
SWIFT: Damn it! My knife! I’ll get you—
JUNO: Hah!
SOUND: THUNK.
SWIFT: Damn it! Your gun!
JUNO: I basically only got the one move but it’s working out okay so far. Wanna punch it out?
SWIFT: Love to.
SOUND: GRUNTS, PUNCHES.
NARRATOR: Andromeda and the dragon wrestled through the storm, trading blow for blow!
JUNO: Wow, I have had enough Andromeda for today!
SWIFT: God, Juno, she’s the galaxy’s favorite hero! What is wrong with you?!
JUNO: Let’s not get into that. Speaking of heroes: what the hell?
SWIFT: What the hell what?
JUNO: You, the murders, the whole everything. Like, what?! You work putting smiles on kids’ faces at The Place That Fun Calls Home TM for a decade, and then one day you decide, “Actually, screw this, let’s burn it and a few engineers to the ground?”
SWIFT: You don’t know what the hell you’re talking about!
NARRATOR (IN BACKGROUND): Andromeda and the dragon wrestled through the storm, trading blow for blow!
Hahh! JUNO: Yeah, you’re right. I probably don’t.
(GRUNTS) But I’m willing to listen.
SWIFT: You don’t know a goddamn thing. This all could’ve worked out, but you don’t know a god! Damn! Thing!
SOUND: GRUNTS, PUNCHES.
NARRATOR: Andromeda and the dragon wrestled through the storm, trading blow for blow!
SWIFT: It’s about priorities! It’s about doing what you have to do, no matter how much you’ll hate doing it! I’d do anything for her!
JUNO: Her… you mean your kid?
SWIFT: Don’t talk about her. (GRUNTS)
JUNO: Agh!
MUSIC: STARTS.
JUNO (NARRATOR): Swift rang my church bell hard enough to make the angels nervous and I fell back against the corner of the cart. She was about to follow it up with a hit to send me really flying, too, until she noticed what Rita had been up to.
SOUND: CLANG. BRAKES SCREECH.
SWIFT: Why did the cart stop? What did you do?
JUNO (NARRATOR): Rita’s plan to sap the power from her cart to mine worked… a little too well.
We were frozen in place, now, at the crest of the ride’s biggest drop. The cart in front was stalled, no power at all, and the cart in back didn’t have the thrust to push both of them over the hill. A big, frozen robo-dragon hung over us, teeth still as stalactites and twice as sharp.
And below us lay Polaris Park, stretching out for mile after technicolor mile.
NARRATOR: And just before Andromeda killed the beast, she looked out… and saw through the distant portal. Polaris. The home she’d given up. Again.
SWIFT: Hah!
SOUND: PUNCH.
JUNO: Oof!
SWIFT: I’ve got you cornered, Steel. I don’t like to do this, you know. I’m not a killer at heart. Not really.
JUNO: (CHOKING) Funny way of showing it.
SWIFT: I didn’t like killing them, either. And I really, really don’t like killing this park. It’s worth more than all of you put together.
But you could never understand. I have to do this. A mother will do anything for her kid. You could never understand that.
JUNO: (CHOKING) Then why the hell are you doing it? Your kid doesn’t want this!
SWIFT: I don’t owe you anything! (GRUNTS)
JUNO: (CHOKING)
JUNO (NARRATOR): Above us, the metal dragon creaked to life. And there was no fire, not here, not this time, either. But…
Look, I didn’t mean to do it, alright? Because even if she was a killer, there aren’t enough people like Yasmin Swift. Everyone says they’d do anything for their kid, but the ones who mean it…
I don’t know. Maybe that’s just me.
SOUND: DISTANT WHEELS ON TRACKS.
SWIFT: The hell is that noise?
JUNO (NARRATOR): She looked away from me for just a second. And– I didn’t mean to do it. But… I guess, sometimes, no matter what the mouth says, the body wants to keep living.
So, without thinking… right before the cart Rita sent after us crashed into ours, I kicked Swift just enough to get her off-balance.
SOUND: THUMP. CLANK.
SWIFT (FADING OUT): Aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh!
JUNO: Swift!
Swiiiiiiiift!!
NARRATOR: And just before Andromeda killed the beast, she looked out… and saw through the distant portal. Polaris. The home she’d given up. Again.
ALL SOUNDS: FADE OUT.
***
JUNO (NARRATOR): When I got off the ride I found Rita there waiting for me.
RITA: Mista Steel! I’m so glad you’re alright!
SOUND: SOFT THUD.
JUNO: Ah!
RITA: I was so worried! I saw you on the video cameras and that mean beautiful Yasmin lady had her fingers around your neck, and I thought oh gosh! But then I thought what if I activate the line with the robots and the carts on it, and then one of them saved you, just like I planned, boss!
JUNO: I knew you’d do it, Rita. That’s why I asked you to stay behind, remember?
RITA: And it makes me sad ‘cause she did go splat, but… you were in danger, Mista Steel, and I had to save you. You can count on me, boss. You can always count on me.
SOUND: MECHANICAL, RHYTHMIC NOISES.
VEGA: Ahem.
JUNO (NARRATOR): I looked up, and there was Lorenzo Vega, on two rusty legs. He still wasn’t smiling, but he didn’t look angry anymore. Now he just looked sad.
VEGA: Detective Steel. Meet me in my office. And Miss… Whoever-you-are, I don’t know how to repay you, but, this is a free park pass for you, if you want it, but if you’re tired of Polaris Park now I could under—
RITA: A free pass?! That’s mine, thank you! See you later, Mista Steel! Have fun at work—
SOUND: RUNNING FOOTSTEPS DEPARTING.
(FADING OUT) —I’m gonna go eat my weight in popcorn and your weight in cotton candy and Frannie’s weight in glazed Saturn pops and the whole P.I. Registry’s weight in tiny pizzas!
VEGA: One of my engineers will show you to my office, Detective Steel. Don’t get lost.
JUNO (NARRATOR): Vega’s office was in the park’s back lot – behind the bright faces of the stores, in the dusty alleys where robo-puppets lay with their clockwork guts out and underpaid interns stood around with a cigarette in one hand and their cartoon costume’s head in the other.
The office itself was even more of a mess. Unfinished schematics on the wall, a three-foot-tall stack of work orders on the ground next to a chair, a pile of old Northstar merchandise on his desk – t-shirts and plastic mugs and action figures.
I poked through the toys for a minute, and before I knew it, one of them was in my hand.
SOUND: TOY SQUEAKS.
VOICE (FROM TOY SPEAKER): Here comes Turbo – the man of the future!
(AT THE SAME TIME) JUNO: Turbo’s here with turbo speed. TOY: Turbo’s here with turbo speed!
JUNO (NARRATOR): The voice nearly made me drop the damn thing. I used to have one of these. Hell, I used to have eight.
SOUND: TOY SQUEAK.
TOY: Stop right there, evil! The good guys always win!
JUNO: (QUIETLY) The good guys always… win.
JUNO (NARRATOR): My hands were shaking. I could remember it so clearly.
SOUND: TOY SQUEAK.
TOY: It’s time for justice! Stop right there, evil! The good guys always win!
SOUND: STRETCHING, RIP.
JUNO: (PANTING)
SOUND: DOOR OPENS. MECHANICAL, RHYTHMIC NOISES.
VEGA: Detective Steel. I see you’ve been having fun with my collectibles.
JUNO: Not really how I—
I mean… sorry.
VEGA: That toy was just a first-edition printing. Older than Andromeda. Older than you, most likely. As irreplaceable as Yasmin Swift.
JUNO: Don’t give me that. She was sabotaging your stupid—
VEGA: Or… as irreplaceable as Sarah Steel. That’s where I remember your name from, isn’t it? She was your mother.
JUNO: Listen, doc, I just want to wrap up this Yasmin Swift thing for Ramses and go on my miserable way.
VEGA: Sarah Steel… it’s been a long, long time.
I think I may even remember you. And that says something – I don’t bother to remember most people. She brought you into the office a few times, gave you your run of the Turbo merchandise. You and… oh, what was his name. Benjamin?
JUNO: Not Benjamin.
VEGA: Ben-something, anyway. You were charming children. …What happened?
JUNO: You’re the one with two metal legs, doc. I don’t think I gotta tell you that life plays a little rough sometimes.
VEGA: I was born without legs, actually. Life does ‘play rough’ – but so does birth. It’s not right, but that’s reality. Sarah seemed like life had given her challenges, too. I don’t think it was her fault, necessarily. Her being– I mean, Northstar letting her go like that.
JUNO: Didn’t ask.
VEGA: I was on the board that made the decision, and I don’t think we did anything wrong. I’ve never done anything I thought was wrong, but… we were just a little company back then. Everything we’d made was on the line! We only had the money to keep one of our writers and then your mother, trying to steal someone else’s work.
JUNO: What are you gunning for here, Vega? You want me to forgive you or somethin’?
VEGA: I just know things went poorly for her after that. Health-wise.
JUNO: Health.
VEGA: And I– expect that made things difficult for you. I’ve been thinking about that for thirty-four years, now. She doesn’t leave your mind easily, a person like Sarah Steel. Unique. Singular. A shame. She made some great things.
JUNO: So what? You want me to forgive you for firing her, or… something? Doc, I barely know the story. I don’t remember you. I was four.
VEGA: It was a difficult situation. She had some very real, well, needs. You might call them ‘moods’. And—
JUNO: Just… whatever. You want me to say I forgive you? Fine, “I forgive you.” But I really don’t care. And look: whether she had needs or moods or whatever you want to dance around and call it, the fact is she dealt with them for years, and then one day she stopped trying. Sarah Steel gave up. It was her fault, and it’s a good goddamn thing she’s dead because her mistake made a lot of misery for a lot of people. There. You happy?
VEGA: I would be a little more precise with my language, I think.
JUNO: Listen! If you don’t give me the junk you promised me on Swift right now—
VEGA: Yes, fine. We’ll drop it.
SOUND: ELECTRONIC BEEP.
There’s a clause in our staff contracts that states we legally own any personal communications made within Polaris Park. So I made a copy of all messages and comms calls she’s made at work for the past five years.
JUNO: That’s… terrifying.
VEGA: That’s industry standard. We have to make sure our secrets stay mum– uh, pop. There’s an untraceable line she spent a lot of time yesterday talking to; bartering over a job, a payment, a place to pick up the, ehm, incendiary-device, all that kind of thing. Originally they wanted Yasmin to kill a cart full of park guests, but… she wouldn’t have it. She always was stubborn.
JUNO: Just cut to the chase. Anything interesting in there?
VEGA: You might want to read the last message she received from that number. Here.
SOUND: ELECTRONIC BEEP.
JUNO: (SIGHS) “The first payment for your daughter’s procedure has been wired to Halo Medical. The remainder of your payment will be conducted in person once you’ve completed the job. Look for a woman with one ear outside the First Museum of Colonized History in… Hyperion City.”
It can’t be… the Piranha?
VEGA: If Ramses has an enemy, it follows that they’d be connected to his campaign in that roachhole. Why he wants to run it I’ll never understand.
JUNO: So whoever’s trying to get to Ramses, I’ll find a lead on them there.
It say what procedure her kid needed?
VEGA: I don’t see how that’s any of our business. And at any rate, any messages that got into specifics were sent outside of work hours, so…
JUNO: None of our business. Right.
Well, thanks for the lead, doc. I’ll put in a good word with Ramses.
VEGA: Do you like it in Hyperion City, Juno?
JUNO: Why do you care?
VEGA: Because…
Do you know the premise to the Andromeda stories? Generally, I mean.
JUNO: This important?
VEGA: I hope not. But… (CLEARS THROAT) Andromeda is the protector of Polaris, a beautiful kingdom of crystal and ice, until the day the evil wizard Orion casts a curse on her. She’ll wander the world forever, but no matter how she searches, she’ll never find her way home.
JUNO: This’d better be going somewhere.
VEGA: So Andromeda makes the best of it. She tries. Every day she follows the North Star, which lights the way to Polaris, and on her way she saves people, and stops Orion from hurting others. But she never breaks the curse.
JUNO: Pretty brutal for a kid’s show.
VEGA: Brutal? Maybe. I’ve always found it… beautiful. Sad, of course, but… Andromeda chooses not to accept any of the places she saves. She insists on going to this home, this place she can never go back to. And insists. And insists.
It’s ironic that the Andromeda pitch meeting is where your mother lost her… way.
MUSIC: STARTS.
Because in retrospect, Andromeda reminds me of Sarah. Lost, searching, never home…
SOUND: FOOTSTEPS.
Hold on, stop a moment. I’m trying to help you.
SOUND: DOOR OPENS.
JUNO: Think I’ve made it pretty clear how much I want this kind of help.
VEGA: You remind me of her, Juno. Truly incredible ability, a truly singular talent… with something powerful storming within you. Be careful. I’ve seen how that goes before.
JUNO: Later, doc. Really excited to never see you again.
SOUND: DOOR CLOSES.
JUNO (NARRATOR): Curses come in all shapes and sizes in this galaxy. Some curses come from evil wizards, and some come from a sickness you never asked for, and some come from a woman that nobody wants to let you shake, no matter how many years stand between you and her.
I was glad to get out of Polaris Park. I didn’t like to think about Northstar. I didn’t like to think about anything that reminded me of… her.
“Learn from the past or you’re doomed to repeat it,” they say. And maybe they’re right. But, if you take that too far, people shouting you down about the past every day, people telling you you’re going to be just like her, people saying the clock’s ticking and any day now you’re going to give up just like she did – that is a curse that fulfills itself.
I’m not going to be like her. I’m not.
(SNORTS) Famous last words, I guess.
MUSIC: ENDS.

But to also see how his internal suffering also makes the people around him have a tough time, it’s… I mean he’s out there, with no regard for his life, and, Rita needs to remind him, there are– you might not care what happens to you, but other people care a lot about what’s happening to you.
KATE: I like that you’re alive, so if you could keep doing that.
JOSHUA: Right. Yeah, which is an important thing for Juno to hear, I think…

Mouth Like A Sailor Part 3
Last part for tonight.  I will be back with more if yall like it!
The morning after our little night out, I wrote a note to Sophie and Jean and left as the were still sleeping.  I woulda walked back home, but Soph's house was a while from my place.  I took the trail into town and waited at the bus-station for the 7 AM.  The city was real quiet at this time in the morning, either everyone was just now waking up, or had just gone to sleep.  Nothing was even open yet, except for the 24/7 places at the plaza, but I wasn't in any rush to get a cup of old coffee that wasn't even hot.  I saw the bus come rolling down the hill, the sun was starting to rise.  I handed the driver 25 cents (you only had to pay from 10 PM till 8), and kept to myself the whole ride back to my neighborhood.    It was Saturday so Darry and Soda were getting ready for work and the rest of their outfit was probably gonna get to the house soon.  I accidently slammed the door on my way in- a habit Darry would probably be yelling at me for the rest of my life.  Steve, Soda's best friend, was lying on the couch having an awful loud conversation with Soda, who was in the shower.  We smiled at each other briefly and I went to my room at the back of the house.  I used to be real close to the whole gang when we were all younger, but it started getting awkward when I turned twelve and my mom gave me this long talk about how a "young lady" shouldn't be out late with "young men" and she went off the one day she walked in my old room and saw Dally and I just hanging out all innocent like.  After those lectures I started hanging out more just with girls and only really spent time with my brothers' friends when they were around.  It wasn't too heartbroken about it as Dal was the one I spent the most time with and he liked me a whole lot more than I liked him.  Even as a kid Dally was tough and harsh and his idea of a fun game was pulling my hair and taking play-fights way to serious.  He's not too bad now, now he just teases me relentlessly about my voice and tries to tell me I'm flat chested and even my ass makes me look like a boy.  Which is ridiculous because I know I'm a looker and so does the rest of Tulsa, he just thinks it's cute to hurt girls' feelings is all.  I got out of yesterday's clothes and cleaned off my makeup from last night.  Most of the things I owned used to be my mom's when she was in college, before she had four kids.  The other twenty-five percent of what I owned were actually hand-me downs from my brothers, a whole lot of that being their shoes from junior high, shirts, and a pair of soda's old 501s.  I got into my mom's old hip-huggers, a black blouse, and Pony's recently out-grown converse.  On my way into the kitchen for a cup of coffee I bumped into Soda who whipped around to look at me with a nervous expression, my stomach dropped, I was either in trouble or something real bad had happened overnight, Soda was rarely ever bothered.
"What?  Soda, Darry didn't check to see where I was last night, did he?"  I asked shakily, Darry didn't just sound scary, but he was real smart, he knew what to take away from me that I would get upset about.
"No, no but he's gonna get suspicious, Marli, you smell like you drank all night!"  He whispered back at me, "You better go brush your teeth and put some perfume on or something, hell just light a smoke."
"OK,OK, thanks Soda."  I ran back to my room to grab a cancer stick,  I hadn't even had much to drink last night, but Soda and Darry had this odd talent for smell, I remember last week I quickly got outta a fight with Darry with some bullshit lie when he smelled pot in my car I had smoked a month before.  I walked out puffing on a cigarette, which of course Darry wasn't gonna be too happy about, but rather that than alcohol.  I walked out to the porch to have it, luckily before Darry even turned around to see me walk out.
"Hey Marls, you look rough, man, what's the matter with you?"  A deep voice laughed from the concrete steps, "Musta been one helluva night."
"Shut-up Dal!  This door is most screen, you don't think Darry won't rip my head off if he suspects something?"  I snapped in a hushed voice.
Dally raised his eyebrows and took my cigarette, taking a long drag before handing it back, "Be cool, man, he's not gonna know you went all the way to that bar just cause of some smart-ass comment I made."
"Yeah?  Guess so.  How the hell did you even know where I was last night?  Doubt you have half the dough to leave this neighborhood anyhow."
"For some reason people around here seem to think you're a real cool broad, did ya know that?"  Dallas chuckled, looking up at me from the ground,          "Some socy girls were yappin at the drive-in about how that Sophie was goin' all the way to Oklahoma City to see some celebrity or something, and you weren't here last night, so where else would you be?"
"Hmm, well as long as that don't get within a miles radius of the Curtis Residence, I guess that's alright."  I sighed and took one last  drag before heading inside.
Darry was walking around looking as stressed-out as ever, with a piece of toast in his mouth, a cup of coffee in one hand and the other trying to tuck his shirt in.  Luckily, he didn't even give me half a glance, so I was pretty much in the clear.  Ponyboy was sitting on the couch next to Two-bit, looking surly as ever.  He was a real smart kid, but a little on the awkward side.  I could tell he wasn't too confident in his steps just yet, but I didn't judge him too hard on it, I'm still figuring my place out in the world.  Darry could get pissy at him a lot, and Steve wasn't too keen on him either.  I hate to think it's a girl thing, but I always held a special place in my heart for kids.  He was my kid brother, so he annoyed the shit outta me, but he was alright.  Soda came running through the living room, looking for his DX shirt, I just can't believe he refuses to set it out for himself the night before, as every damn morning he runs around like a scalded cat looking for the damn thing.  He pushed me outta his way and started around the rest of our small house.  I went in to get a coffee and saw that Dal had followed me into the kitchen.  I turned around to look at him, immediately my stomach did a little flip.  I had seen that look before at a lot of guys' faces and it never really made me feel all flattered at shit, just kinda uncomfortable.  But for Dally I changed a little, he and I had been so close as kids and even after that he hung on to our friendship more than the rest of the gang.  I didn't say anything, I just walked back to my room, what could I have said?  I sure as hell wouldn't be caught trying to chat him up, I knew better than that.  He wasn't necessarily a player, he's only had one girl at a time and always kept her close, but he was still a dick!  He didn't have a lot of respect for girls, he always did for me and the other girls he knew, but I'd like to know the guy I date doesn't embarrass girls on the street just for kicks.  Not even that, but my brothers would think I'm just the dumbest little thing to walk the earth if we ever did become anything.  I remember last summer, I had a short-lived fling with this 22 year old in the Army on leave, and when I told Darry, he said "Marls, I don't wanna tell you how to live your life, but c'mon don't be just another greasy girl in our neighborhood who thinks she's hot shit for getting in with older men.  You're just being trashy."  Usually when my brothers say stuff like that to me I don't care, cause that's what siblings do, we are SUPPOSED to hate each other, but this time it was different.  He wasn't calling me trashy as an annoying older brother, he really meant it.    My brothers really care about me, Soda mostly just cause he cares about everybody.  But Darry will always just judge me before he stands up for me, same with Ponyboy,he can sure say a lot of shit about Darry, but at the end of the day those two are a lot more similar than Soda and I, and we're twins.  I'm probably overthinking it all anyways, maybe Dallas was just being an objective jerk, but that's not the first time, nor the mildest thing, that has happened between us.
