Two Sisters (On the Terrace)
Artist: Pierre-Auguste Renoir (French, 1841-1919)
Date: 1881
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Collection: Art Institute of Chicago
Description
“He loves everything that is joyous, brilliant, and consoling in life,” an anonymous interviewer once wrote about Pierre-Auguste Renoir. This may explain why Two Sisters (On the Terrace) is one of the most popular paintings in the Art Institute. Here Renoir depicted the radiance of lovely young women on a warm and beautiful day. The older girl, wearing the female boater’s blue flannel, is posed in the center of the evocative landscape backdrop of Chatou, a suburban town where the artist spent much of the spring of 1881. She gazes absently beyond her younger companion, who seems, in a charming visual conceit, to have just dashed into the picture. Technically, the painting is a tour de force: Renoir juxtaposed solid, almost life-size figures against a landscape that—like a stage set—seems a realm of pure vision and fantasy. The sewing basket in the left foreground evokes a palette, holding the bright, pure pigments that the artist mixed, diluted, and altered to create the rest of the painting. Although the girls were not actually sisters, Renoir’s dealer showed the work with this title, along with Acrobats at the Cirque Fernando and others, at the seventh Impressionist exhibition, in 1882.

Sewing basket
In the UK market, sewing baskets are a popular choice among sewing enthusiasts and hobbyists, valued for their practicality and charm. These baskets come in a variety of styles, including classic wicker designs, floral fabric exteriors, and contemporary plastic or wooden options. Inside, they often feature compartments, pin cushions, and removable trays, helping organize everything from needles and threads to scissors and buttons. Many UK retailers offer sewing baskets, from high-street stores to specialized online craft shops, catering to both beginner and seasoned sewists. With their blend of functionality and aesthetic appeal, sewing baskets remain a staple in UK crafting spaces.

I think someone wanted me to report my eventual decision so I went to Michael's since they had a 50% off coupon this week and bought the sewing box there; after tax it came to $25.41 CAD (with the coupon it was the best like to price ratio)
(my mom was with me so I bought some metallic thread for embroidery to take advantage of another 50% coupon (≧▽≦) )
It's not very exiting print but I think it's charming in its simplicity !
For the sewing enthusiasts out there I have a question: your sewing box recs?
I have one I like ok but it cracked and I want to replace it for something a little more convenient maybe and something I actually like the look of
I have a vintage plastic serious business one that has 2 levels for little bits and things and a large space at the bottom for various threads , it fits everything but I don't like how inconvenient it is to get to the thread since I need to take out 2 trays before I can get to it
It would be easy enough to get some tubs for the thread but what to store all the other odd bits like sewing feet is stumping me, I don't want to just get a plain tool box but I am not finding a sewing box I like the look of either(they are expensive for something I don't love the look of) and a lot of them have a cheap feeling vacuum shaped plastic trays i rather hate!
I found this nail polish box (other colours on a different listing but it's listed with other styles and i don't want to confuse anyone) that I like because it has a drawer at the bottom so it would solve the tray problem with the thread but it is pretty big and pricey (the size is however comparable to my current box)
I have tried that wooden singer spreading out trays style box as well but I found it rather cumbersome
So anyways, any thoughts or ideas?

thinking today about how much I love literally all fiber arts. I am hopeless at almost every other kind of art, but as soon as there is thread, yarn, or string I can figure it out fairly quickly.
I learned how to knit when i was eight, started sewing at nine, my dad taught me rock climbing knots around that age, I figured out from a book how to make friendship bracelets, I've made my own drop spindle to make yarn with, and more recently I've picked up visible mending. I've learned embroidery through fixing my overalls, and this year I've learned how to darn and how to do sashiko (which I did for the first time today). After years of being unable to crochet I finally figured it out last night and made seven granny squares in just a few hours.
I want to learn every fiber art that I can. I want to quilt, I want to use a spinning wheel, I want to weave, I want to learn tatting, I want to learn how to weave a basket, I want to learn them all. If I could travel through time and meet anyone in the Bible, high on my list are the craftsmen who made the Tabernacle.
I want to travel the world and learn the fiber arts of every culture, from the gorgeous Mayan weaving in Guatemala, to the stunning batik of Java, to Kente in Ghana. I want to sit at the feet of experienced men and women and watch them do their craft expertly and learn from them.
Of every art form I've seen, it's fiber arts that tug most at my heartstrings.

I love when I see posts like "Share how many crochet WIPs you currently have! I have 5, it's so many!"
Like, girl, I have unfinished projects from over a decade ago that I refuse to frog on the off chance I decide to finish them. I've found years-old projects I forgot I even started and will impulsively just finish it on the spot. I've started three different projects in the last 2 months, including one I started yesterday, that I already know I may or may not finish within the year depending on motivation.
The number of WIPs I have is infinite.
#crochet#knitting#needlepoint#sewing#embroidery#shoutout to the time it took me 4 years to make my dad a hat. and like 6 years to make a turtle for a teacher.#i picked up yarn spinning for ONE day in like 2017. i have not done it since.#there's a half finished elephant amigurumi sitting in a basket and i started that guy in like 2011#i have two maybe three shawls i know of that are sitting unfinished in a storage bag#plenty of swatches of things that i start and lose interest in#currently i have a cardigan i wanted to make and started it and then got bored so i stopped#there's a hat i was knitting for my nanna that i started maybe 2 days before she passed#and that's sat unfinished i can't even look at it. i have no clue if i'll ever actually finish it.#there's at least one skirt i never finished sewing. and two skirts i have all the materials for but haven't started.#i know i have one beach cover up dress and one cover up skirt that i started in 2017 and didn't finish.#i think my oldest work in progress though dates back to when i was 9 or 10. i made a slipper. never finished the other foot.#that was in 2005 or 06. so literally i might have WIPs older than someone who is reading this.#and those are the just some of the ones i REMEMBER. buried in my yarn stash are probably others i've just forgotten.

I had exactly enough purple scraps left from the starry purple quilt to make a baby quilt! Well, the quilt top isn't exactly done yet, but pretty close, just one more round of ironing and sewing left
#sewing#quilting#quilting wip#scrappy purple baby quilt#what am I going to do with this? I do not know#but it is fabric out of my scrap pile#scrap management#it's not all wild scrap patchwork and crumb quilting!#sometimes it's pretty purple baby quilts#sometimes I am...concerned by the amount of scraps of fabric and batting I generate#and by my own unwillingness to throw them away (it feels wasteful!)#so I am always happy to use the scraps for stuff#like the basket yesterday! and this quilt today!#I might spend a few more days on scrap management and finishing off quilt tops#so I can get them out of my crafting space

Adjustable Sewing Tables: Benefits for Tailors of All Heights and Skill Levels
Adjustable sewing tables are essential for tailors of all heights and skill levels, offering numerous benefits. Their customizable height allows users to work comfortably, reducing strain on the back and neck, which is crucial during long sewing sessions. This versatility also accommodates different tasks, from cutting fabric to detailed sewing, making it easier to switch between projects. An adjustable table can promote better posture and enhance precision, leading to improved craftsmanship. Additionally, these tables often come with features like built-in storage and extension leaves, providing ample space for tools and materials, ultimately creating a more efficient and enjoyable sewing experience.
Sewing tools are a necessity for any person who works as a seamstress, dressmaker or tailor. They would need items like a Tailors mannequin that helps them to see exactly how a particular garment looks on the human form. Even if a garment is not finished, one can pin pieces of it to a mannequin to maintain its form and figure. Tailors would also need a practical and stylish sewing basket to effectively organize all sewing accessories. It would help in keeping all sewing accessories organized and ready for use.
To keep the sewing space well-organized, people also have to invest in sturdy and spacious sewing tables. Usually, the tables specially made for sewing are collapsible and lightweight. Hence, they make it easier for people to travel with their workspace. Sewing tables are available in an expansive variety of colors and sizes. This basically means that people can personalize these tables without a hassle. Sewing tables ideally emphasizes on sturdiness and convenience. Investing in the right sewing table would help tailors to complete their projects faster and benefit from better ergonomics.
Many tailors prefer to do their cutting while standing. They also iron their clothes while standing. This leaves many hunched over a traditional desk or table. Sewing tables with a drop-down platform can help the tailors to align the table's height with the sewing machine or make it more comfortable to use while standing. These tables tend to come in a variety of strength and stability combinations.

My cat tree needed some new posts so in addition to doing that I cleaned and recovered it over the weekend and Theda was so mad the whole time.
All of my cats were confused, but Theda was mad. I stole her cat tree!! Mother is evil!!!!!! Every time I added a new layer she had to climb on it, regardless of it was screwed down yet.
She’s finally at peace again. In time I may be forgiven.
#theda bara true millennial kitten#I had one basket and the cats were obsessed with it#so I decided to buy a second when I ordered more posts#then I discovered the first basket was like#horrifically filthy on the inside#soooo now they once again have just one basket#I did keep the metal structure in case I get super ambitious and decide to try and make my own basket#I basically know how it’s constructed but whether my sewing machines can do it is another question#I bought four yards of fleece assuming it would be overkill#but honestly? this was more or less the correct amount of kill#I have some leftover but not that much#I love that this cat tree manufacturer sells replacement parts#tbh not that much cheaper to buy five posts compared to buying a new tree#but so so so much less waste#and this is a good quality tree
