A Convenient Truth

Next time you are in your vehicle, take a look around and start counting how many convenience stores you pass en route to your destination. They are on practically every street corner, and there are often two or more sharing the same intersection. C-stores are among the most necessary of retail establishments today, especially since most now sell gasoline.

It wasn’t always this way. The first 7-Eleven opened in 1927. It and the ones that followed were tiny by today’s standards, did not sell gas, and were not beholden to street corner locations. Often they were in the middle of a block, which now seems ill-conceived in that it could not attract people from two streets.

Today, c-stores are much larger, have much broader selections of merchandise, sit on two or more acres, and may have a bank and/or fast food co-branded outlet inside. There are more than 150,000 of these today, and without them, most of us would find our lives increasingly inconvenient.

But there’s a growing chain that is spreading out of Texas that challenges the notion of what a c-store is. Buc-ee’s, with 58 units spread between here and Florida, considers itself a c-store. It’s just that their stores don’t look at all like a 7-Eleven. Oh, and they’re going to break ground soon in Amarillo.

The new store here will be 74,000 square feet and sit on 20 acres. Need gas? An array of 120 pumps will be there from which to choose. While it is not quite the biggest unit in the chain—the biggest is in Sevierville Tennessee with 74,700 square feet—it’s not far behind. But an even bigger one—75,000 square feet—is planned for near Ocala Florida.

Is it truly a c-store, though? One for thing for certain, it is not a truck stop, because trucks are not allowed. RVs are welcome, but you can’t spend the night. How about we just call them travel centers then? Given the location on Amarillo’s east side (near where US 287 branches off I-40), it will be among eight legitimate truck stops, meaning that travelers will have a plethora of choices. It’s little wonder why some people consider Amarillo to be a truck stop town.

As a marketing prof, I stand in amazement every time I stop at Buc-ee’s. No, it’s not because I am buying food or merchandise. To me it is crazy how Buc-ee’s has developed a cult-like following, and people will interrupt their travels for an hour to shop and dine there. They have shopping carts, something you don’t see in a c-store. Perhaps their biggest claim to fame is clean rest rooms. They are immaculate.

Although the chain dates to 1982, it is only in the last five years or so that it started its explosive growth, as well as venturing out of state. A large portion of the merchandise is private label foods, along with a wide variety of souvenirs ranging from t-shirts to plush toys.

And umbrellas. I confess. I bought one, not because I wanted to show my allegiance, but rather because I was trapped inside their St Augustine Florida store when a downpour broke out. It was either buy an umbrella, wait it out, or get drenched. I gladly forked over $15.

So powerful is the Buc-ee’s brand that it sometimes spawns other retail, hotels, and dining in proximity. Take the Terrell Texas store, for example, which is situated near where US 80 breaks off I-20 east of Dallas. The area has blossomed from just Buc-ee’s to three hotels and a variety of fast food and retail choices. All because of a c-store that attracts hundreds of customers each hour.

Given their popularity, I am surprised they have not adopted e-commerce. Their website is pretty basic, much like you would have seen in the late-1990s. This is a golden opportunity missed, because specialty clothing, toys, and packaged foods can easily be sold this way to folks not lucky (I suppose) to have a Buc-ee’s nearby. Then again, Trader Joe’s has followed a similarly austere marketing program with great success.

I have monitored social media reactions lately concerning the groundbreaking, and noted that some folks wondered why Buc-ee’s did not build on the west side, closer to where much of Amarillo lives. But Buc-ee’s is not building this for Amarillo people. No, it is building it for travelers. And all this at a time when QT has arrived in Amarillo, along with the return of Circle K, adding even more c-stores—and more in keeping with the typical size—to the mix.

I am pretty sure that when c-stores arrived on the scene nearly a century ago, no one could ever imagine how the genre has evolved, especially with Buc-ee’s. I’ll be watching for them to open in Amarillo, and will no doubt pay a visit. I won’t be going to shop but rather to people-watch. I’ll bring the umbrella just in case.

Prayers and Perplexity

Our day started with a plan to meet for the hotel breakfast at 8:00 am. We were all packed back in the car and headed towards Gatlinburg by 9:30. As it was Sunday the travel ritual of finding a mass began amd we searched on route for one that would time appropriately with out travel. Georgetown Kentucky proved to be a match and so we put the instructions in the GPS and had a little adventure across the side roads to find our weekly salvation. It proved to be memorable as we arrived to a large campus and traveled up a long, winding drive to the Cardome Centre. A huge imposing building at the top of the driveway appeared to be the perfect setting for a horror movie. Poppa remarked that it looked like a place you go in and never come out. The parking lot soon started to fill with cars and people entered the rear door of the main building. We followed and climbed the large wooden staircase to the chapel. It was a beautiful space filled with light. The seating was white chairs. The priest welcomed us, the choir was rehearsing and every seat in the chapel was filled. The full-colour bulletin printed weekly outlined the mass and showed that the parish collected over $17 000 LAST WEEK in Offertory. Mind blown! After mass Poppa again remarked at the ease with which we managed to escape what surely must be a secret Catholic ritualistic retreat.

We continued to drive south from Kentucky and stopped at the Tennessee border at the Visitor’s Centre to collect brochures and pamphlets. We didn’t arrive in Sevierville until 3pm and by then we were famished as the nuts and crackers we had as snacks in the car could only do so much. We stopped at the Tanger Outlets with a plan to get a sub and look around until check-in at 4 pm. The Subway was…interesting…One look at our sandwiches and Syl declared that the maker was definitely NOT a sandwich artist. 🤣

We decided over lunch that we might as well continue to to hotels (plural). It had come to the time that mom had to let dad know that we were staying in two different spots. He was, as one might imagine, perplexed.

Syl, Julien and I made our way to our Smokey Mountain Resort in Gatlinburg. The transition from Pigeon Forge to the Smokey Mountain Parkway’s natural beauty is remarkable. We found our way to Gatlinburg and Julien went in with me to check in declaring “Hot damn!” at everything he saw. Our condo is a lovely two bedroom with a mountain view and a bucolic stream gurgling. It’s just what one might imagine a mountain condo to be…and then you walk outside to the Parkway in Gatlinburg and…WHAM! Are smacked in the face with a commercial garishness that we have described as Wasaga Beach, meets Niagara Falls, meets Vegas. So strange that this is what tourism in the Smokey Mountains is. We feel that we are missing something and are determined to find out exactly what that is while we are here.

Julien is over the moon with the sheer number of mini-putt options and so we are determined to get him to as many as possible. He packed his own putter as any true mini-putt athlete is ought to do.

Syl and me went for a big walk to check things out. Spied some spots for souvenirs that we will revisit and remarked at the number of candy stores within 500 metres of one another.

We had dinner in Pigeon Forge in a yummy Italian restaurant called Johnny Carino’s and brought enough home to have for lunch the next day. Shopping at Publix for breakfast was the next order of business. We discovered that groceries are not cheap in America either.

An early night back to the resort where Julien and Syl watched a movie. Our travel day had worn us out and we were glad for a comfy bed to rest our weary souls.

May 15 - Gatlinburg, Tennessee

Today we spent most of the day driving. It took 3 hours from Renfro Valley, Kentucky to Gatlinburg, Tennessee. It is mostly straight freeway, bordered by hills and trees. Small towns are around but difficult to see from the road. Nothing much happens until arriving to Sevierville, famous as the birthplace of Dolly Parton. I wanted to see her statue in front of the courthouse but the traffic was horrible. Next town, basically uninterrupted

, is Pidgeon Forge were Dolly has her Dollywood Park. It is one uninterrupted stretch of stores, restaurants, attractions and major traffic. A few miles down the road is the entrance to Smoky Mountains National Park and Gatlinburg, the largest of the 3 towns. It is impossible to describe this place: it is a cross between Las Vegas (minus the casinos), Disneyland, a carnival, Venice Beach, PB, etc. it is crowded, noisy, full of hotels, arcades, wine a d moonshine tasting places, souvenir shops, restaurants, etc. I never imaged it would look this way. We walked around town after dinner and we just were totally surprised. Observations: Many Harley riders in both states as well as Harley stores. Almost every exit on the freeway as well as towns big and small have many Mexican restaurants, but there are no Mexicans to be found. Some nasty pro-Trump support slogans in Tenn both on cars, on people and stores. No so in Kentucky

Man, these past few days have been an enjoyable experience for me. I don't even know where to begin! Oh, wait… I actually do. I think it’s best for me to break it all down day by day.

Friday

As previously mentioned, Thursday night marked the start of the mini-hiatus because Mom and I had to make sure we could catch our 6:55 AM flight to Nashville on time. Needless to say, we only got a few hours of sleep; however, thanks to us getting the caffeine from our colas and trying to nap on the plane, we were awake enough to explore the downtown Nashville area.

As you may have guessed, Nashville is a popular place for country music and a lot of the attractions in the Lower Broadway area is full of clubs and honky-tory bars. No matter where you go, day or night, there is always a bar where people perform country music live for the patrons.

Nashville also happens to be the place that harbors the Johnny Cash Museum, which was the first stop of the weekend.

As you can tell from the first image, this artifact was made entirely out of steel that was salvaged from the destroyed World Trade Center, which is where the One World Trade Center/Freedom Tower currently stands. The second image is a piece of memorabilia: the Martin D-35 guitar Johnny Cash used when he was alive as it was his favorite Martin guitar to play on stage for two decades.

Speaking of country music, Nashville had recently hosted this year's CMA Music Festival and Garth Brooks took home the award for Entertainer of the Year. I wasn't even sure if it was coincidental or not since this weekend in Tennessee was primarily about his concert, but I'll get on that later. In the meantime, another neat place we checked out was the Country Music Hall of Fame… well, specifically some of the gift shops.

Yes, one of the gift shops has a wall filled with nothing but records from all kinds of country artists.

Outside of the country-related sights, we also checked out a couple more places within the Nashville area like a local candy store called the Candy Kitchen. Everywhere you look, there were all kinds of store-brand and local candy, caramel apples, fudge, ice cream, etc. Combine that with the aroma of pure sugar and you end up either feeling like you've gone to candy heaven or your teeth ended up rotting because of how many sweets this place had.

They even have giant ass Dum Dum lollipops for crying out loud! Like, how the hell are you supposed to eat something that huge?!

Later that afternoon, we weren't sure what to do in Nashville between the bars, party tractors, and what not, mostly because we weren’t in the mood to check everything out due to the little amount of sleep we got. As a result, we did a bit of online searching and found a pretty cool mall not far from the state's capital.

Yep. That's right. That is what this mall is called. The name alone was enough to give me Sonic vibes and I'm certain y'all know why. Hell, they even had three parking lots each labeled emerald, gold, and ruby; I lowkey wished they added four more parking lots and have them named after sapphire, amethyst, diamond, and aquamarine just so it can keep reminding me of Sonic, you know? Specifically the seven Chaos Emeralds? ...*coughs*...

Anyways, that's kinda how Mom and I spent the rest of our Friday: having dinner at the Cheesecake Factory and poking at some shops they had before returning to Nashville to see what it was like at night. I will say this right now: they fucking love partying.

Saturday

The next day of the trip was mostly spent driving up to Knoxville for the Garth Brooks concert, which I was able to get a decent number of photos because it was crazy. When Mom got the tickets, she said it was going to be a stadium concert and I thought it was going to be similar to Taylor Swift's concert at Gillette Stadium in terms of crowds, but holy shit! Was I wrong! When you've got a college football stadium filled with 84,000 people attending, it's bound to get fucking cramped, so comparing both stadium tours, this easily takes the cake for the wildest concert I've ever been to thus far. Nevertheless, I still managed to have fun.

Because the Tumblr app—as far as I know—only allows 10 photos per post, I decided to condense some of my favorite photos I've taken for the rest of the trip into collages to try and satisfy the limit, but it appears I may have made more collages than I anticipated, so the rest of this post will be typed via laptop. To kick off the series of collages, here are some of my favorites pictures I’ve taken of Garth.

Sunday

Sunday was the last day of our weekend in Tennessee, so having done the stuff mentioned above, how did we spend the majority of yesterday? By driving through Sevierville and Pigeon Forge, with the latter being the home of Dollywood!

Before going on this trip, Mom and I discovered Dollywood wasn't far away from Knoxville, the same town where the concert at the University of Tennessee was held. She tried to figure out ways to make additional plans to go to Dollywood to see their Christmas traditions, but we ultimately chose to save it for another time because we wanted to make sure we arrived at the airport early enough to board.

On that note, what proved to be the icing on the cake for this trip was what Mom would call a happy accident: viewing the Great Smoky Mountain Range.

The collage with the light blue background is a portion of the several photos I've taken of the Great Smokies as we were driving through a road in Sevierville that offered wonderful views from the distance. The one with a wooden background is during our trek through the mountain range; on top of the photo of the national park sign, we made a few stops along the way because those stops had some marvelous views.

And now comes the pièce de résistance. The happy accident of this trip. While taking pictures of the views at the first stop, we noticed some buildings down below; a couple of them resembled hotels, but we weren't sure what the rest were. As we were leaving the mountains, we immediately entered what we saw from above: Gatlinburg.

We didn't take a lot of pictures there because we were too mesmerized with what Gatlinburg had to offer as we were driving through: shops, an aquarium, museums, ski lifts, hiking, and so on. Everywhere we looked, there was nothing but endless entertainment, just like Pigeon Forge! They are even all decorated for the Christmas season, and honestly, I definitely wouldn't mind spending Christmas in Gatlinburg in the foreseeable future. Renting a cabin, seeing what the resort has to offer, my sisters and brother-in-law joining with Mom, my brothers, and myself to celebrate the holidays. That would be super amazing. ☺️
