People who are truly your friend will not leave you behind attempting to catch up or exclude you from things just because you're disabled. They won't make fun of you just because you have learning disabilities. They won't claim it's too difficult for them to correctly refer to you by the right pronouns just because you're queer.
If they do, they aren't a friend. Get yourself some new ones and you'll start to feel a whole lot happier
#makes a huge difference trust me#it takes time but you'll realise who wants to be your friend and who's worth putting effort into#you can't chase after something that isn't there. you can't make excuses for someone who shouldn't be excused#it took me breaking down in front of one of the big important people at work#and he sat with me for 2 whole hours listening and then we wrote a list and everything. it was basically a whole therapy session#for me to really take the jump. and i am glad he gave me the reassurance that was the right thing to do. because he was right#i am so much happier. i have things to work on. but in about 3 months I've started to fix so many things in my life#I'm doing a job i love. i have friends i love and can ring up at any moment to call some stupid ikea trip or hair dyeing session#i have things to look foward to in the near future. attainable goals set to reach.#slowly figuring things out. I've found my people. the right people who don't make me feel like shit or who give mixed signals 24/7#people who don't make me only feel worthy when I'm not visibly disabled and using mobility aids or not being slowed down by my chronic pain#I've come more to peace with being disabled. it's been 4 years. I've had time to get used to the thought now. it's ok.#because maybe i was meant to experience this to really be able to understand and make change

How do I make changes to myself that stick?
A lot of people are making resolutions for the new year, but this time you’re going to stick to it. You’ve seen people make resolutions and break them in a few weeks or days. But this time you’re going to make sure that your changes stick.
We all know that if we want our changes to last, we need to be committed and determined in what we do. We need the plan to help us stay on track with our goals and achieve them quickly. This article will guide you through the process of making your changes stick so they can last for years.
1: Identify The Reasons For Making These Changes in Your Life
You know what you need to do, but you're having a hard time sticking to it. You don't know how to push through the mental blocks and frustrations.
Concrete goals and results are key to long-term success — they give you a clear direction and make it easier to stick with your decisions.
Determine why you want to stick to these life changes! When we lose motivation, it's usually because we don't understand what it is that we're hoping to accomplish. If you identify WHY you want something, then not only will it be easier to keep going, but decisions will come easier as well.
2: Plan a Series of Mini-plans to Help You Accomplish Your Goals
It's hard to stay motivated to make the changes you know you need to make.
Planning is incredibly important, but who has time to plan? Meanwhile, no one ever wants to make mistakes because they didn't plan well enough, so they end up giving up on their goals too soon.
It's time to make plans work for you! Make a Plan of Mini-Plans is a tool designed for anyone who already knows what they want, but needs help outlining the steps for getting there. It's much simpler than you think!
3: Make Sure Your Goals Are Attainable And Measurable
Feeling overwhelmed by the prospect of starting a new habit or lifestyle change.
Not being able to follow through with your goals because you have no idea what you should do or how to even start.
Laser-focus on the first step of your goal and break it into small, manageable, and attainable tasks. You will be unstoppable when you know what you’re doing and can see it.
4: Keep Track of Your Deadlines And Make Sure They Are Met
It's easy to say you want something changed in your life, but taking the time and effort to work for it is where most people falter.
Set deadlines and stick to them. Set mini-deadlines in your plan and stick to them. Start from the final date that you want to have accomplished your life changes, and work backward from there. Ask yourself what you need to do each week, month, or year that will get you closer and closer.
5: Consider The Action Rather Than The Goal When Deciding What To Do
The faster we achieve our goals, the faster we can change our lives for the better. To make anything happen we need action, and that means pushing ourselves to just do something even when we don’t know if it’ll work out. We gain the knowledge that it did; if it didn’t, we can push ourselves, even more, the next time.
Focus on action instead of goals. It's easier to stay determined and focused on your goal when you're making progress as opposed to feeling like what you're doing isn't enough.
6: Maintain a Record of Your Progress
It's important to stay on top of your goals and make sure you're taking the steps necessary to achieve them. Otherwise, you'll end up feeling like nothing is changing and nothing is going your way.
Use a tracking chart or checklist to stay on top of your goals and keep yourself accountable for the changes you want to make in your life.
7: Take The Time to Reward And Praise Yourself For Your Efforts
Every step you take towards sticking to your life changes is a mini victory and deserves to be treated as such. A great, and free, way to reward yourself is through self-praise.
Give yourself rewards and praise! Celebrate your achievements with self-praise and watch your motivation soar!

if I've learned anything from grad school it's to check your sources, and this has proven invaluable in the dozens of instances when I've had an MBA-type try to tell me something about finances or leadership. Case in point:
Firefox serves me clickbaity articles through Pocket, which is fine because I like Firefox. But sometimes an article makes me curious. I'm pretty anal about my finances, and I wondered if this article was, as I suspected, total horseshit, or could potentially benefit me and help me get my spending under control. So let's check the article in question.
It mostly seems like common sense. "...track expenses and income for at least a month before setting a budget...How much money do I have or earn? How much do I want to save?" Basic shit like that. But then I get to this section:
This sounds fucking made up to me. And thankfully, they've provided a source to their claim that "research has repeatedly shown" that writing things down changes behavior. First mistake. What research is this?
Forbes, naturally, my #1 source for absolute dogshit fart-sniffing financial schlock. Forbes is the type of website that guy from high school who constantly posts on linkedin trawls daily for little articles like this that make him feel better about refusing to pay for a decent package for his employees' healthcare (I'm from the United States, a barbaric, conflict-ridden country in the throes of civil unrest, so obsessed with violence that its warlords prioritize weapons over universal medical coverage. I digress). Forbes constantly posts shit like this, and I constantly spend my time at leadership seminars debunking poor consultants who get paid to read these claims credulously. Look at this highlighted text. Does it make sense to you that simply writing your financial goals down would result in a 10x increase in your income? Because if it does, let me make you an offer on this sick ass bridge.
Thankfully, Forbes also makes the mistake of citing their sources. Let's check to see where this hyperlink goes:
SidSavara. I've never heard of this site, but the About section tells me that Sid is "a technology leader who empowers teams to grow into their best selves. He is a life-long learner enjoys developing software, leading teams in delivering mission critical projects, playing guitar and watching football and basketball."
That doesn't mean anything. What are his LinkedIn credentials? With the caveat that anyone can lie on Linkedin, Mr. Savara appears to be a Software Engineer. Which is fine! I'm glad software engineers exist! But Sid's got nothing in his professional history which suggests he knows shit about finance. So I'm already pretty skeptical of his website, which is increasingly looking like a personal fart-huffing blog.
The article itself repeats the credulous claim made in the Forbes story earlier, but this time, provides no link for the 3% story. Mr. Savara is smarter than his colleages at Forbes, it's much wiser to just make shit up.
HOWEVER. I am not the first person to have followed this rabbit hole. Because at the very top of this article, there is a disclaimer.
Uh oh!
Sid's been called out before, and in the follow up to this article, he reveals the truth.
You can guess where this is going.
So to go back to the VERY beginning of this post, both Pocket/Good Housekeeping and Forbes failed to do even the most basic of research, taking the wild claim that writing down your budget may increase your income by 10x on good faith and the word of a(n admittedly honest about his shortcomings) software engineer.
Why did I spend 30 minutes to make a tumblr post about this? Mostly to show off how smart I am, but also to remind folks of just how flimsy any claim on the internet can be. Click those links, follow those sources, and when the sources stop linking, ask why.
#long post#side note- this is one of the reasons i dont cover shit i dont like in my video essays. yall havent seen me angry.

Trying to start a new habit of setting 10 goals for myself every Sunday night to do for the week. Setting it as my phone background too so I’m constantly reminded of them. 💪🏼 I’ve eaten like absolute shite the past few days down to massive amounts of stress and upset, and not exercised at all, but absolutely determined to get back on track. 🎯
Also at least one person needs to vote on this poll so I don’t feel like a total loser and become despondent. I totally don’t rely on other people to feel things.

ohhhh my supervisor is so sick of me
#which is annoying as FUCK because this guy is most of the reason why I’m so behind rn#he’s getting a plane later today and so was frustrated that I kept asking questions#when this is kinda the first chance I’ve had to ask most of my questions and actually get a response#which. incidentally. is why my draft sucks and I have a week and a half left to finish it#but man yeah like 20 minutes into the meeting I stop to ask if there’s anything else he wanted to say#bc he had a bit at the start but the man never stops talking so I took a brief silence as a way to start grilling him and didn’t let up#for ~15 minutes. and he’s like yeah I wanted to check some stuff before my flight later today#I am aware flights are stressful but sir you have been doing less than the minimum for weeks and making my life hell#you can handle half an hour of talking to me#like I had no idea how I was meant to write this!! I’ve asked and he brushed me off!! and nobody else explains it#bc your supervisor is meant to!! so from the comments on the draft and grilling him I’ve only just figured out#what the fuck I’m actually meant to be writing#I also gave up on not talking over him bc he does to me and if I don’t cut in he will talk for 20 minutes straight#AND HE TALKS OVER ME. I keep forgetting that part#but god rn in every aspect of this I’m just scrambling to get as much done as possible which means everything is a mess#but first draft by Monday now (I’ve set my OWN goal to have everything figured out at least by Friday night so I can just be refining shit)#I’ve had a Lot of first drafts at this point huh.#I think. I need to break this down again so that I can get some sense of accomplishment here#luckily I just got a new structure!#god I just realised one of the things I asked him was abt restructuring some objectives. so now half of what Ive written is gonna be changed#I have so much editing to do. and so much writing to do. someone pls help me#luke.txt

anyway two roads diverged in a yellow wood
either stay in this city, far from where i feel is home, but with a job and a boyfriend and financial security and a nice apartment, but also isolated from the life that i feel i want to be living
or drop everything again and move to the other city, the one I feel is home, leaving job and boyfriend here for a life that doesn't exist yet and maybe never will
#i feel like everyone in the world who's like 20 to 32 all need to sit down in a big room#and just figure out how the fuck we're gonna do this#it's so impossible to set goals for your life when you can tell you'll never be able to afford the life you watched your parents living#whether that's home ownership or having kids or being able to survive on a single income#and there's no resolution to this! i can go to all the therapy i want but it doesn't change the basic parameters of 21st century life#idk man i just wanna write books and movies and see my friends#and you know what#i am so grateful for my life but i'm not gonna undercut everything i'm saying by going oh but i do have some privileges!#yes i have privilege but also the billionaires should pay taxes#and we are getting distracted from the Revolution by constantly having to acknowledge that we have privilege#not to mention climate crisis things i.e. i cannot imagine the world being habitable by the end of my lifetime#increasingly watching the world become a place that i do not want to live#anyway. one for the void

HOW TO GIVE PERSONALITY TO A CHARACTER
Giving personality to a character is an essential part of character development in storytelling, whether you're writing a novel, screenplay, or creating a character for a role-playing game. Here are some steps and considerations to help you give personality to your character:
Understand Their Backstory:
Start by creating a detailed backstory for your character. Where were they born? What were their childhood experiences like? What significant events have shaped their life? Understanding their past can help you determine their motivations, fears, and desires.
2. Define Their Goals and Motivations:
Characters often become more interesting when they have clear goals and motivations. What does your character want? It could be something tangible like a job or a romantic relationship, or it could be an abstract desire like happiness or freedom.
3. Determine Their Strengths and Weaknesses:
No one is perfect, and characters should reflect this. Identify your character's strengths and weaknesses. This can include physical abilities, intellectual skills, and personality traits. Flaws can make characters relatable and three-dimensional.
4. Consider Their Personality Traits:
Think about your character's personality traits. Are they introverted or extroverted? Shy or outgoing? Kind or selfish? Create a list of traits that describe their character. You can use personality frameworks like the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator or the Big Five Personality Traits as a starting point.
5. Give Them Quirks and Habits:
Quirks and habits can make a character memorable. Do they have a specific way of speaking, a unique fashion style, or an unusual hobby? These details can help bring your character to life.
6. Explore Their Relationships:
Characters don't exist in isolation. Consider how your character interacts with others. What are their relationships like with family, friends, and enemies? These relationships can reveal a lot about their personality.
7. Show, Don't Tell:
Instead of explicitly telling the audience about your character's personality, show it through their actions, dialogue, and decisions. Let the reader or viewer infer their traits based on their behavior.
8. Create Internal Conflict:
Characters with internal conflicts are often more engaging. What inner struggles does your character face? These can be related to their goals, values, or past experiences.
9. Use Character Arcs:
Consider how your character will change or grow throughout the story. Character development is often about how a character evolves in response to the events and challenges they face.
10. Seek Inspiration:
Draw inspiration from real people, other fictional characters, or even historical figures. Study how people with similar traits and backgrounds behave to inform your character's actions and reactions.
11. Write Dialogue and Inner Monologues:
Writing dialogue and inner monologues from your character's perspective can help you get inside their head and understand their thought processes and emotions.
12. Consider the Setting:
The setting of your story can influence your character's personality. For example, a character who grows up in a war-torn environment may have a different personality than one raised in a peaceful, affluent society.
13. Revise and Refine:
Don't be afraid to revise and refine your character as you write and develop your story. Characters can evolve and change as the narrative unfolds.
Remember that well-developed characters are dynamic and multi-faceted. They should feel like real people with strengths, weaknesses, and complexities. As you write and develop your character, put yourself in their shoes and think about how they would react to various situations. This will help you create a compelling and believable personality for your character.

It just clicked for me, like yesterday, how long I have been following this comic and how much I love it. There’s so many adventures and mysteries under a deceptively simple premise: becoming a hero to save stories.
Which becomes a story in of itself, (ie., Hero’s Journey) that’s full of thought-provoking questions and gentle world building. There’s background that’s explained, but it never feels like word-vomit. It’s told like a story by stories because every character has a story and is a story themselves.
It’s so meta, and abstract and profound in so many small ways that encapsulate the human condition and the complex emotions that exist within that
Hello! I've been following TPoH for about a decade now and I can say it rewired my brain in many ways:D Your work is wonderful and deeply inspiring to me, and I was skimming your blog to see if you were okay with getting tattoos based on the comic (I read that you are? Is that the case still? Because I'd love to get one based on TPoH!) when I got the courage to write for the first time:) Thank you so much for writing this story!
YES I am very pro tattoo, be sure it's what you want! but absolutely do go ahead I'd be honoured :D thanks for the support this means a lot to me!
#damn I remember one of the first chapters#or maybe middle chapter#where Hero’s color scheme begins to change and she starts making trades that alter her classic outfit and gear#and it hit me in that moment#tpoh hero#the question of: how far does a goal/journey change you?#will you recognize yourself at the end of it?#when does your perception of yourself change? is it noticed? is it embraced/rejected?#GODDAMN it just feels so philosophical when Jolly sets the stage for her characters to run amok#making you think about life and your place in it#because you are a wonderfully complex story#and stories are meant to be heard#the property of hate#toph#DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED WITH RGB#he has a whole ‘playing a role that’s been ascribed to me but I’m actually multifaceted’#idk man#he’s my little guy with a mountain of baggage#like Gladstone LMAO#Those guys are just iconic

The Best News of Last Week
1. ‘We are just getting started’: the plastic-eating bacteria that could change the world
In 2016, Japanese scientists Oda and Hiraga published their discovery of Ideonella sakaiensis, a bacterium capable of breaking down PET plastic into basic nutrients. This finding marked a shift in microbiology's perception, recognizing the potential of microbes to solve pressing environmental issues.
France's Carbios has successfully applied bacterial enzyme technology to recycle PET plastic waste into new plastic products, aligning with the French government's goal of fully recycling plastic packaging by 2025.
2. HIV cases in Amsterdam drop to almost zero after PrEP scheme
According to Dutch AIDS Fund, there were only nine new cases of the virus in Amsterdam in 2022, down from 66 people diagnosed in 2021. The organisation claimed that 128 people were diagnosed with HIV in Amsterdam in 2019, and since 2010, the number of new infections in the Dutch capital has fallen by 95 per cent.
3. Cheap and drinkable water from desalination is finally a reality
In a groundbreaking endeavor, engineers from MIT and China have designed a passive solar desalination system aimed at converting seawater into drinkable water.
The concept, articulated in a study published in the journal Joule, harnesses the dual powers of the sun and the inherent properties of seawater, emulating the ocean’s “thermohaline” circulation on a smaller scale, to evaporate water and leave salt behind.
4. World’s 1st drug to regrow teeth enters clinical trials

building the life that you deserve
building the life you deserve is a journey that involves self-reflection, goal-setting, and consistent effort. here are some steps to help you get started:
decide what you want: identify what you want to change about your life and how you envision your ideal life. this clarity can help you focus on your goals.
envision your ideal life: this step is all about creating a clear and vivid picture of the life you want to live. when you start to envision your life as you want it to be, it helps to guide your actions and decisions towards making that vision a reality.
set goals: break down your vision into achievable goals. this makes the process less overwhelming and more manageable.
take action: start making changes, even if they are small. consistent effort over time leads to significant progress.
prioritize relationships: building and maintaining strong relationships is essential for a fulfilling life.
simplify your life: remove unnecessary possessions and distractions. this can help you focus on what truly matters.
believe in yourself: trust in your abilities and strengths. confidence is key to overcoming challenges and achieving your goals.
remember, it’s your journey, and you have the power to change it.
