Good evening, my fantastic friends and family, and welcome to a very special Fuzzy Friday.

Folks, I usually aim to end the week on a high note with a cute picture of an adorable animal and best wishes for the weekend. Unfortunately, this is not going to be a typical Fuzzy Friday; fair warning, it’s sobering, somber, and quite serious. That being said, I’m sharing with you what I hope is my most superbomb awesome photo of Grafton and Cat, taken on the day of the solar eclipse.

You may have noticed my posting schedule has been somewhat erratic lately; there’s been good reason for that. Life has been heavy duty, and time has not been kind. The news is not good, although it’s not totally bleak. I hope you’ve braced yourselves by now: first, Cat is no longer with us. Sadly, a few weeks ago, her boundless fury at a world that refused to acknowledge her as its rightful ruler was no longer enough to stop old age from finally wearing her down. She was vicious, yes, but also was much loved and shall be deeply missed. See you on the other side of the rainbow, Cat.

Secondly, as bad as that was, the next one is worse: Grafton has a brain tumor.

Grafton has been experiencing some weird, weird body/health stuff lately, and a few months ago, discovered that the reason was because a large tumor was pressing on his brain and spinal column. Not great, but he has medical insurance (sincere thanks to former President Obama and everyone responsible for the ACA!) and he has the best possible scenario happening, has had lot of lucky breaks, and is currently at Cleveland Clinic in the middle of a literal day-long surgical procedure (seriously, we’re talking 16-20some hours and three surgical teams) to remove the tumor from his head. At the time of this post, he’s been on the table for about ten hours and things are following the good timeline thus far, so yay! If all goes according to plan, he’ll be done tonight and he can start the long job of recovery.

And that’s where we’re at. We’re ultimately doing ok; things are not smooth and life is not easy, but things could be worse. We are practicing being Zen at waiting while still moving forward. So far, so good, so let’s see if we keep the momentum going.

Good morning, my beloved friends and family, and welcome back to another Serious Life Update! Good news, everyone! Grafton has passed his swallow test and is back to eating real (but soft) food! As soon as we heard, Jer and I brought him some ice cream from Mason’s Creamery (his favorite) to celebrate. We had lots of reasons to celebrate; not only he get to have his first real meal in twelve days, but his doctors decided there was no need for a follow-up surgery, they’re removing his nasogastric tube, closing off the cerebrospinal fluid shunt, and moving him to the brand-new Beachwood facility either today or tomorrow. He’s still going to be in rehab for another couple weeks at least, but timeline is looking good to have him home in early/mid-January. Once he’s settled in Beachwood, most likely he’s going to be more open to visitors, so if you’d like to see him soon keep an eye on this space.
