While most Sailor Moon musicals are based on the series’ main 5 arcs, the shows have also presented different stories - sometimes derivative of other arcs, sometimes completely new (and one time based on a manga side story!). 

Not counting the times Bandai mixed different arcs into one, we could count 5 other stories on stage:

The Legend of Kaguya Island (1999(x2), 2004, 2005)

Dracul Arc (2000-01)

Sanctuary of Love (2002)

Kaguya Hime’s Beloved (2021)

Chronicle (2022)

- Kaguya Island and Sanctuary of Love are myu originals; - The Dracul arc uses some concepts from existing arcs but its plot is a myu original, and it is the only arc told in chapters through sequential shows;  - Kaguya Hime’s Beloved in based on the manga side story;  - Chronicle is a myu original that takes place after KHB; - Both Sanctuary of Love and Chronicle were made as commemorative musicals in honor of the anniversary of Sailor Moon - the 10th and the 30th, respectively.

Sera Myu Week Day 4: Queens of Myu

So I ended up skipping Day 3 of @sera-myu-week​ cause I was over on my personal blog all day due to the big Pokémon Direct (and also cause it was NogiMyu Day and I don’t know enough about NogiMyu to really post anything...I’m still figuring out how to even watch them!). But now I’m back.

So...Queens of Sera Myu.

First off, my fave Mercury, Chieco-chan!!

I actually found Kawabe Chieco initially through her role as Naru in PGSM. I ended up finding out about her SeraMyu involvement in a sort of backways fashion through her music career (mostly her song “Sakura Kiss,” which was super popular at the time). She was essentially my gateway into Myu itself, and she continues to be my favorite Mercury actress. In her era, I feel like Mercury really got to shine as a character.

Chieco is such a great singer, too; SeraMyu basically launched her idol career. Sadly, it doesn’t look like she’s released anything since 2005, and now that she’s married and has a daughter, I find it unlikely she will do any more music, given how the idol culture is in Japan. I was fortunate enough to find all her music online back in the day. My favorite song of hers is “Quiet Riot.” It’s not super well-known, being the obscure third song off the Shining!/cry baby single, but I just really relate to it.

“Shining!” is probably my favorite music video of hers, though. I mean, they’re just like dancing through like Costco or somewhere, which is pretty random, but it’s fun to watch and the song is super catchy.

Ooyama Anza

So, Anza is probably my favorite Moon, though I honestly still haven’t decided on my favorite myu Moon. I did start with Miyuki (RIP), but for some reason I just got into Anza more. I thought she both sang and acted well, and she was around long enough for you to really see her develop and improve over the five years she played Moon. I really liked her at events, both during and after her run; her personality was just really great. She’s also done quite well for herself since myu, first in her solo career and now with her band Head Phones President. I think she’s probably the only major First Stage actress who still has any sort of active career. And she hasn’t forgotten about her myu days, given the concert she did with some of her former myu costars a few years ago where they sang old SeraMyu songs. She still does musicals too (her performance as Éponine from Les Mis was pretty amazing, if this song is any indication).

I haven’t gotten to really hear her music since her Myu days, but she did do the second opening song to Cardcaptor Sakura, which I really like. Also one of my favorite performances of hers was when she came back during the SeraMyu 777th show celebration (during Marina’s era) to sing her song “Knockin’ Down Hesitation”:

Saitou Rei

Right now, as with Moon, I’m torn on who my favorite Pluto is. It’s sort of a tie between Saitou Rei, Hosaka Yuuko, and Mikako Ishii.

But since I haven’t seen all of Yuuko and Mikako’s myus, I’m going to go with Rei for this. Now, to be fair, I haven’t seen all of Rei’s myus either, since her first myu (Henshin - Super Senshi e no Michi (Kaiteiban)) was never released on video. But I’ve seen the rest.

I just really like Rei as Pluto. She nails the motherly aspects of Setsuna/Pluto, and even at events she’s treated like the cast’s mother. She also plays the mature, strong Pluto really well when needed. Most importantly, though, is how she stands on her own. Like I said, I love Yuuko, but I’ve primarily gotten into her as part of a trio with Nao and Yuuka, and I have yet to see how she does in myu without them. Rei, on the other hand, does well on her own without needing the support of the other Outers as such.

This video gives good examples of how great her singing was. She could hold her own in emotional songs like “Stay Alone” and “Sorezore no Elegy” as well as funnier songs like “Kick Out a Bloody Mystery” or her fankan version of “Mata Mata Chibiusa Desu.” She was a great live singer too, which was a big deal seeing as she came in right as Myu was transitioning to live singing.

Her best song is hands down “Onna no Ronsou” from Eien Densetsu. The song itself is what the title suggests - a “women’s dispute” - and is a duet between Pluto and Queen Beryl about their shared love for Endymion. It’s just such a great song. They even brought it back to the myus twice, in Shin Densetsu Kourin and Kakyuu-Ouhi Kourin (the latter of which was Yuuko’s final myu). I’ve listened to it many a time, but I still think it’s amazing. Rei and Beryl’s actress Nishina Yuri both do a fantastic job of it, honestly. But what makes this even more amazing is that Rei is holding her own against a 12-YEAR TAKARAZUKA VETERAN in Yuri. Even the Eien K Senshuuraku performance, when most of the cast seem to be barely avoiding crying by Act 2, is amazing.

Takagi Nao

Why yes, I have in fact jumped on the Nao train.

I’m sure it’s a running joke in the myu fandom by now about how many of us Bandai Myu fans love Takagi Nao, but seriously...she’s just SO COOL. I mean, she is pretty attractive too, I suppose (I don’t swing that way) but it was that coolness about her that made me really get into her. In that sense, Haruka is a perfect character for her, because Haruka herself kinda gives off that vibe -- the cool, mysterious, masculine racer who’s secretly a skirt-wearing girly fighter for justice. I seriously think that Nao is largely the reason why Sailor Uranus remains the least recast role in the Myus -- she was so good, they kept her around for 4 years! Recent social media pics have shown she’s been friendly with our current Uranus, Shuu, as well, which is nice to see, especially since in my opinion Shuu is the only one to even come close to rivaling Nao in the Uranus role.

Nao also just had SUCH great chemistry with Neptune actress Asami Yuuka that you could legit believe their characters were lovers. To be fair, she did well with Shimada Sara in her first couple myus as well, but Nao and Yuuka just clicked in a great way. When Yuuko came in in Transylvania no Mori, the three of them just became this power trio that all worked really great together.

Nao is also pretty funny with her commentaries on omake videos, and looks good even without the Uranus costume, as anyone who’s seen her performance of “Galaxia Gorgeous” can attest. That’s not to say they didn’t make her look super fashionable as Haruka, though. She pretty much rocked any outfit they put her in, like this leather jacket from Death Vulcan no Fuuin:

I do really like Nao’s singing. She had great solos in songs like “Harsh Saint Cry,” “Destined Couple,” and “Broken Mobius.” Sadly her songs were always with someone else, so she didn’t get any true solo songs, at least in the musicals themselves. She did get to sing “Knockin’ Down Hesitation” at one of the Kaguya fankans, but sadly only a short clip of it exists, and like I said she did do “Galaxia Gorgeous,” which she did awesome at. Her version of the Starlights’ song “See Me Boku-tachi no Jidai” is also really good.

Yuuga Yamato

Ok, to be fair, I’ve only seen one of Yuuga’s myus in full. But I like her for pretty much the same reason as Nao...she’s SO COOL. Going into La Reconquista, I wasn’t sure if I would like a woman playing Mamoru, but she actually does a really good job. Her years as a Takarazuka otokoyaku really show; she is crazy talented. She does a good job showing off Mamoru’s love for Usagi and pretty much rocks all her songs. She actually does a surprisingly good job at King Endymion as well (what I’ve seen of it anyway).

Probably the song she slays the most is “The Guardian Who Lost Hope” from Le Mouvement Final. When I first heard this song without having seen the video of it, I assumed Galaxia was singing it, which would make sense. But then I saw the video of it and realized MAMORU WAS SINGING IT. It’s from the scene where Sailor Moon encounters revived evil versions of all the senshi and Tuxedo Kamen en route to Galaxia’s palace. It’s actually scary how good Yuuga is at being evil. As if the singing wasn’t enough, her facial expressions just kill me -- she sings these dark lines like “Your future and love are disappearing” and FREAKING SMILES. She plays evil Mamoru as if she is having the time of her life and that’s just frightening to me.

This is in the SAME MUSICAL where we have that scene of her acting all goofy and being Usagi’s “special chef.” I mean, you have to be skilled to pull that off. Just saying.

Time for another Miyuki Memorial cover! Years ago, I did a cover of "Solar Miracle Make Up," which Miyuki said at her first fankan was her favorite myu song, so since that old cover is gone, I decided to redo it for this year.

This was recorded late at night, after I'd worked all day - and it was my 8th day straight working! But I wanted to get this up by the 18th (the anniversary of Miyuki's death) so I went for it. Since this was in memory of Miyuki, I used the Last Dracul Jokyoku video and audio.

For context, I included in the video the bit where Miyuki called it her favorite song, which was at the LDJ Fankan, as recorded on the LDJ Guide Video.

4.1# Sera Myu Musical VHS

Miyuki-Moon VHS 😍. OMG, I love them so much. I remember how happy I was, when I got LD and later Kessen 🥰. The DV one is new and I am so grateful that the triology is (almost, but I don't care sm for the Kaiteiban) complete now 🙌. Unfortunately, none of them is a preorder version, so no Omakes 😟.

With Black Lady and Black Lady K is my collection of musicals, that were only released on VHS (almost, Kessen K missing) complete ☺️.

4.1# Sera Myu Special VHS

Oh my, oh my, oh my! These are some special VHS from Miyuki-Moon. The 500th Performance Special Video is usually very expensive and not available for under 10,000¥ but I got it for about 5,000¥ 🥰. The other two are the LD Guide Video and Kessen Kaiteiban Fankan. Kessen original Fankan is on my must-have list oc.

More special recordings. On the left is the 2nd Ongakushu - a collection of songs from Miyuki. And the one on the right is called 'Special Video with important scenes' (the term Kindergarten video often used with it. However, it says nowhere on the cover 'Kindergarten'). It features short introductions from the BL Inners as well as significant scenes and songs from the Dracul Arc 🦇.

5# Flyer & Special Stuff

My Sera Myu collection Part 1

Got inspired to do this by my lovely @vampiru-chan 💗✨

I bought a lot Myu stuff recently (hehe) so it's time to show my growing collection 🥰. Let's go! (Too many pics, that is why it comes in 2 parts!)

1# Sera Myu CDs

Along with programs, the CDs were the first items I collected. The Love&Ballad CD is my first and favourite. I got it from a small German version of ebay for only about 6€! The rest is from yahoo auctions and rakuten (and was quite more expensive, especially those with Miyuki). My mom's friend helped me to buy them.

2# Sera Myu programs

Fumina-Moon programs. In the Shin Densetsu Kourin one, therr are autographs in it 💗. The original KSD is missing though.

Miyuki-Moon programs. The Death Vulcan one has autographs too 😍. Kessen K is missing (but I don't miss it, since I prefer the Cast of the original version!)

Marina-Moon Mugen Gakuen programs. They're shiny✨.

Marina-Moon Starlights Ryuusei Densetsu program and pencil board. I really crave for the KOK program >.<

Marina-Moon Shin Kaguya Shima Densetsu programs. The original one had a quite chaotic way to show the backstage stuff. Luckily the SKSD K one has it more structured again 😅.

ANZA & Akiko Kosaka ~ Legend Forever program. I love this one so much!!!! It has a little cast reunion and every member wrote some lines. It's very special to me🤗. Especially because #mygirlmanami is part of it and as always so cute and sweet and still hyped about Myu 😍💙.

First time I watched Sera Myu was probably 2009?(I can’t remember because it was so long ago xD but somewhere between 2008-2010) but I didn’t really like the few ones I watched so I stopped. But couple years after(probably 2012?) I watched Kaguya Shima Densetsu and I it was amazing and I fell in love. After that I watch few Myus but it kinda died again but after watching Un Nouveau Voyage in 2015 I got back on track and here I am xD

2) The 1st musical you saw? It was either Black Lady Kaiteiban or Mugen Gakuen. Can’t really remember for sure but probably Black Lady K xD

3) Your favourite musical? Eien Densetsu Kaiteiban <333 no matter how many times I watch it, it is awesome overtime and I cry my eyes out during the graduation

(I haven’t spend that much time in Sera Myu community so I’m not really sure what is unpopular opinion and what is not xD) I actually prefer Karen over Kanon xD And I’m not big Riona fan(I actually LOVED her Rubeus and was really surprised when I heard that Rubeus was played by woman. She did it really well. But her Taiki wasn’t that good imo :/)

16) Ai no Starshine or Music of the Spheres? OMG I love them both so much but Ai no Starshine gets the win because I can listen to it so many times but not get bored of it. I even learned the dance xD

Answering some unasked Sera Myu questions

…I know, no one actually tagged me or asked to do this meme, but @sailorzakuro invited anyone who wants to take part in this challenge and I’m very eager to, so let’s start!

1) You are a Myu fan since…? Short answer: since 2012, aged 13. 2) The first musical you saw? I always watch and read things in strict chronological order, so that was Gaiden. I think you can see how I went on.

3) Your favourite musical? OMG Eien Densetsu Kaiteban is the best musical ever, it’s got such a great soundtrack and the Senshuraku recording is especially touching!

4) Your favourite Sailor Moon actress? QUEEN ANZA FOR LIFE!!!!111!!1

5) Say one positive thing about every Moon actress. Anza: OMG QUEEN I mean: best singer, best actress, best everything… Should I really go on? Fumina: A nice singer and perfectly in-character for a post-manga Usaghi, very calm and compassed compared to others. Miyuki: If there is a queen in Myu (see before), then Miyuki is the princess, she’s so good at everything she does and I love her dearly… and of course I miss her so much! ;( She’s just so skilled that I think of her as a performer who would definitely deserve to be #1, if only there weren’t someone who is even better… this is without diminishing Miyuki’s ability at all! Plus, she’s the one who made me undestand that nasal voices aren’t necessarily terrible, quite the contrary with her case. Marina: WOW like was she really 12 when she started? I could think of many ways to praise her singing, but the most important thing I think about Marina is just “too good for her age” XD Satomi: I respect her very much because I think she’s the one Myu actress who improved awesomely during the course of time. I mean, I have to admit I’m not a fan of her singing and acting from LR through UNV, but when she returned in LMF she literally blew me away and I couldn’t believe she was the same person considering how much she improved. Hotaru: I can really see how she put her whole heart into her performance and that she loved it to death. I find her very relatable because she’s so fangirly she low-key reminds me of myself!

6) Is Sera Myu your favourite version of Sailor Moon? Er… actually, not at all ‘XD While I am absolutely convinced that the manga is the best version of the franchise and the first anime is the worst one, I’m much more torn apart among the other version… It is very hard for me to do a ranking, because I just can’t decide which I love more amongst Crystal, PGSM and Myu!

7) Who is your favourite cast member? ANZAANZAANZAANZAANZAANZAAAA…

8) Are your first favourites your actual favourites? Oh, yes! Anza, Ayako and Yuta have always been my Top 3 and will forever be. I have changed my mind over many actors, in the sense that I’ve come to like many whom I really didn’t care about at first view, but my best favourites will always stay the same

9) If you could say one sentence to your Myu favourite, what do you want to say to him/her? Nothing in particular, really. I’d rather have her sing Usaghi’s lines from Tabidachi for me to enjoy and worship!

10) Which Sailor Moon story do you want on stage? The manga stories which didn’t make it to the stage so far! I get that the short stories would be almost impossible to adapt, but between the Shining Princess’ Lover and the whole of Sailor V there is enough material to go on for at least three years! After that, they could start with some original material… maybe some story set during the Silver Millennium era?

11) Tell me your Top 3 underrated actors. 1: Tomoko Inami 2: Akiko Miyazawa 3: Miki Kawasaki

12) Give 3 actors new roles. Er… Does Anza as Cosmos count? Because, apart from that, I can’t really think of anything else: it’s because the actors I like have always been cast perfectly spot-on, while the ones I don’t… I’d rather have them have no parts at all XD

13) Combine classic and revival Myu: what does it look like? YES YES YES this is actually my greatest fantasy, I would kill to have a musical which combined the strong plotting and characterization of New Myu with the awesome soundtrack and casting of Old Myu

14) Revival Myu song you want in classic myu? Er… None? I’d rather have the exact opposite XD I mean, there are New Myu songs I do like, but they couldn’t ever even dream to compare to the work of goddess Akiko Kosaka.

15) Tell me an unpopular opinion you have about Myu. (Lightly whispering): I actually dislike Yuka Asami both in terms of singing and acting… I have tried to make myself like her to no avail. Now please don’t kill me! Apart from that, there are also some typical fan-favourites like Nao, Yuka and Chieko whom I love but are just number 2 for me because I think there’s someone even better than them… does this count as unpopular?

16) Ai no Starshine or Music of the Spheres? We hear the music of the spheeeeres… Speaking of New Myu songs I enjoy, this is definitely one of the best for me!

17) The Last Change or its XXI Century version? …Can I answer “both”? Lol, this is still another case of two things that are both so good it’s difficult to choose between them… I love both arrangements, Miyuki is QUEEN in both (yes, Marina is also good, but nowhere near her level IMO) and I am both into slow songs and upbeat ones. Actually, this reminds me very much of the issue I’ve got with Dolce Melodia (a song from the Italian dub of Mermaid Melody which you have to listen to NOW), where, after 11 long years, I still can’t understand if I prefer the original upbeat version or the more emotional carillon arrangement… But, while I am a sucker for both genres, slow love songs are definitely my cup of tea - in fact, my best favourite song in the whole freaking world is the main ballad theme from Beauty and the Beast. And while The Last Change is no love song, the original version has go tthis kind of feel to me, so that’s the one I’ll peek… but that’s been a very hard choice! XD

18) Cho Bi Uranus to Neptune or Harsh Saint Cry? Oh, this is much easier? While I do like both very much, the thing is that First Stage >>> everything else IMO ‘XD So it must be Cho Bi.

19) Is that something about Myu that annoys you? THE FREAKING UNRELEASED MATERIAL       I freaking want to have tapes of the four unreleased musicals so much that I’d die for them! Not to mention the reunion concert that Anza & Akiko made in 2015… Also yes, the speaking over the fankans. That’s pretty common, but there’s a reason if everyone is deeply pissed off by it. And the fact that some of the performances were only shown in snippets

20) What do you expect from the 2019 musical? A lot of things, lol. Actually this is getting pretty long, so if you’re really dying to read my opinion about this (I doubt it’s the case, but still), I’ve already made a complete list of my hopes on the purpose which you can find following the link up there.

21)  How important are dancing abilities of the actors for you? …I actually don’t even pay attention to them, and even if I did, I’m far too uncompetent for it to matter much for me. Sorry for the horrible answer ‘XD

22) Which Myu merchandise do you want? FREAKING VIDEOTAPES OF THE UNRELEASED MATERIAL Also official soundtracks for the New Myu and a more complete collection of the instrumental versions of all Myu songs

23) Are you sad that Luna and Artemis disappeared after Gaiden? You can bet on it! I’m also bitter for this because I was sure they would include them when La Reconquista was announced XD

24) An interesting (non-existing) HaruMichi couple? San’ae x Tomoko is my dream, what with them being the best Uranus and best Neptune for me? As for actually existing ones, my favourite is Shu x Sayaka.

25) Your favourite Moon x Tux couple? Anza x Yuta for eveeeer And I’ve also got this forbidden dream of seeing some Miyuki x Yu, I think they would be perfect together for some reason… sadly that’s not possible :(

26) Your favourite musical-only character? Kyaosu. You can beat me now. Also Space Knight, I wonder how it is possible that it didn’t come to my mind first. And yes, I have that sense of humour.

27) Which character would you play in a musical? …No one. I’m definitely not qualified enough to even dream of something like that XD But if I had to choose, than it would surely be my queen Usaghi

28) Something else you want to say about Sera Myu? Sera Myu is awesome, okay? I love it so much and it’s such an important part of my life and it gives me happiness when I’m feeling down and all those things… I sould probably stop now!

30 days of Sera Myu: Day 1

So I found this thing online and decided to do it on tumblr! Day 1. What was your first Myu and/or how did you get into Myu? Well it started when I stumbled across a clip of Moonlight Densetsu from the Black Lady Fankan. Curious about what I had just seen I decided to find the Black Lady musical and watched that. (Totally wasn't prepared for so much feels though) That was pretty much it and I was completely hooked XD The rest is history as they say ;)

The 25th Anniversary Project of Sailor Moon has been officially announced with lots of new things to come. One of the more exciting announcements is a special performance of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon: The Musical at AnimeMatsuri in Houston, Texas! This is a chance for American fans to get to see Sera Myu live without going to Japan.

The announcement states:

We are pleased to announce that Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon: The Musical is coming to Anime Matsuri 2017, to be held at GEORGE R. BROWN CONVENTION CENTER, Houston, from Friday, April 7, through Sunday, April 9. There will be a special performance by the Japanese cast of 9 Sailor Guardians joined by Tuxedo Mask to officially commemorate the establishment of "April 7th" as Sailor Moon Day in Houston.

Duet Corner ~ Tanjou! Ankoku no Princess Black Lady FanKan (2001)

At the fan event for the Black Lady musical, random pairs got to perform what is arguably the most iconic Uranus & Neptune duet in myu history: Chou Bi! Uranus to Neptune

Below are the pairings, in order of who got to sing Uranus’ and Neptune’s verses, respectively.

And finally, Nao Uranus & Yuuka Neptune joining Pluto and Saturn ^^

For those who don’t know, Kawasaki frequently played villains. Endo was myu’s choreographer and usually played minor minions. In the Black Lady musicals, Miki was Esmeraude, while Ado was Calaveras!

Welcome back to Song of the Week! On Friday...yeah...I had to work a super long shift yesterday, and only remembered like halfway through that I needed to do the post, and I’d forgotten what song I’d planned on, and then by the time I got home and was ready to do it it was already midnight...so yeah.

Anyway, this week’s featured song is the super awesome “Tuxedo Versus” from Black Lady (original and Kaiteiban), Ai no Sanctuary and Mugen Gakuen (Kaiteiban). (Why they replaced it with “Tuxedo Mission” in the original Mugen Gakuen I will never know. “Tuxedo Mission” is a great song and all, but for goodness sake IT WAS KENJI’S LAST MYU, AND HE FREAKING ORIGINATED “TUXEDO VERSUS”!)

This feature took a little extra research, cause for some reason some of the pages on Eternal Legend (which I use as an info source a lot) are down right now. (On the plus side, it appears Myu Corner is one of the front-page sources that comes up when you search Google for “sera myu fankans.” That makes me happy, cause one of my site goals has been to promote the omake stuff).

Those of you who have been following me for a while probably know I have a huge crush on Shirota Yuu, so OF COURSE I had to feature Yuu-kun’s version for the video. Sorry Kenji fans.

(Also somehow it escaped me that when Yuu-kun debuted as Tuxedo Kamen, he was SIXTEEN. If you listen to his first self-intro at the Mugen K Fankan, he introduces himself as “Shirota Yuu, juu-roku-sai desu.” Wow. Keep in mind Marina was only 14 at this point. Although, since Yuu-kun’s birthday is apparently on December 26th, he actually turned 17 between his first fankan -- on November 4th, 2002, based on the filmed version -- and the actual start of Mugen K’s run on January 2nd, 2003. But I digress...)

30 days of Sera Myu: Day 18

Day 18. Favorite Theme Song Ok so now is the day to talk about it! My favourite theme song is FIRE. The first time I heard it I loved the lyrics and found the tune very catchy. It describes the senshi perfectly XD It is a determined fight song with little bits of encouragement put in here there and everything. The whole song just makes me smile so much and always makes me sing along. Then when I already loved FIRE enough and it was like my favourite Myu song I saw the part in Kakyuu Ouhi Kourin Fankan when Yuuko and Yuu were singing and dancing to it (Well it was more like Yuu trying to copy Yuuko's moves XD) and I loved it even more!
