Rohit Sharma's 200th ODI: His top five innings for India
208* off 153 balls vs Sri Lanka, Mohali, 2017
Mohali witnessed another Rohit masterclass. He paced his innings beautifully in the penultimate match of the series in December 2017. Rohit, also the stand-in skipper, began cautiously following the first ODI hammering and with Shikhar Dhawan put on 115.
The momentum shifted after Rohit reached his hundred in 115 deliveries. The last seven overs produced 115 runs with with Rohit slamming 92 off 27. The madness began in the 44th over when he ransacked Suranga Lakmal for four sixes. Nuwan Pradeep conceded 18 in the next courtesy Rohit, who finished on 208 not out.
The only batsman with more than one ODI double-hundred – amazingly, he has three – India’s stand-in captain Rohit Sharma will on Thursday play his 200th ODI when the visitors meet New Zealand at Hamilton’s Seddon Park.
In 199 ODIs (193 innings) the 31-year-old has amassed 7799 runs at an average of 48.14 with 22 hundreds and 39 fifties, which puts him at ninth place overall.
Statistically, Rohit is India’s fourth most successful opener in ODIs with 5832 runs from 114 innings. His average as opener stands at 58.32, comfortably the highest off all Indian batsmen to open the innings. (READ MORE: The key numbers that highlight India being up 3-0 over New Zealand)
On the occasion of his 200th ODI, here is a look at Rohit’s top five innings.
209 off 158 balls vs Australia, Bengaluru, 2013
On November 2, 2013 when the world was celebrating Diwali across India, cricket also heard the loudest firecrackers at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. With the series locked at 2-2 heading into the final match against Australia, Rohit roared his way into the history books by smashing a scintillating double century and re-wrote the record for highest number of sixes in an innings by hitting the ball 16 times over the fence on a day when quite a few other records were rewritten.
Rohit, whose career received a lifeline after being made an opener, hit a staggering 16 sixes, eclipsing Shane Watson’s 15 made against Bangladesh.
While his first 100 came in 114 balls, the next 109 runs were scored off just 57 balls. In an incredible show of power-hitting, India scored 100 runs in the last five overs as Rohit and MS Dhoni added 167 runs for the fifth wicket, which is a record against Australia.India’s 383/6 was the highest ever total rattled up against Australia and India won by 57 runs.
264 off 173 balls vs Sri Lanka, Kolkata, 2014
Back in the side after recovering from finger and shoulder injuries that kept him out of international cricket for over two months, Rohit stormed his way to the highest individual total in ODIs at Eden Gardens. He got to his half-century in 72 balls but needed 28 ball to get to 100, 25 from 100 to 150 and finally just 15 balls to surge fro 150 to 200. In all, Rohit’s epic 264 contained 33 fours and nine sixes.
This innings took him past Virender Sehwag’s 219 and made him the first batsman with two ODI double-centuries.
Chasing 405, Sri Lanka were 251 all out.
137 off 126 balls vs Bangladesh, Melbourne, 2015
While his place in India’s Test team remained a talking point, Rohit proved that was a force to reckon with in the 50-over game. His best knock in a rather productive year came against Bangladesh in the quarter-final of the 2016 ICC Cricket World Cup. He scored a calculated and composed 126-ball 137 against a talented bowling attack to give India a score of 302. Bangladesh lost by 109 runs but the story could have been different if Rohit was dismissed earlier.
171* off 163 balls vs Australia, Perth, 2016
This was a very fine innings in a losing cause. On a good batting track, India decided to bat first and Rohit shone once again versus Australia. He hammered 13 boundaries and seven sixes to score 171 which propelled India to 309/3 in 50 overs.
Australia won by five wickets with four balls to spare thanks to Steve Smith’s 149.
