France will deliver missiles to Ukraine on a monthly basis in 2024
More than 600 missiles announced as continuous support in the midst of Ukraine's struggles.
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 01/19/2024 - 16:00 in Military, War Zones
France has committed to provide Ukraine with 50 missiles per month over 2024, totaling 600 missiles throughout the year, as the war-torn nation continues to face the effects of the conflict.
The French Minister of Defense, Sebastien Lecornu, announced the start of missile deliveries to Ukraine during an interview at France Inter, reports Le Figaro. From January 18, France will provide approximately 50 undesignated "missiles" per month by the end of the year.
Lecornu clarified that this is a distinct initiative from President Emmanuel Macron's decision to supply about 40 SCALP air-to-air cruise missiles to Ukraine.
The missile weapons supplied are believed to be modified air bombs of the AASM family, equipped with a propellant rocket and classified as missiles in the French military system. AASM is a modernization kit designed for existing free-fall unguided aerial pumps, specifically the American JDAM model used by Ukrainian tactical aviation.
The AASM kit includes a front section with orientation system and flaps and a rear section with accelerator to increase flight range. Two types of aerial pump kits are in use in France: "Hammer-250" for 227 kg Mk82 pumps and "Hammer-1000" for 908 kg Mk84 pumps.
The front part of the AASM kit can incorporate three orientation systems: inertial with GPS correction, inertial with thermal imaging orientation or similar with laser beam orientation system. In 2016, the French Ministry of Defense ordered the production of 764 AASM sets with inertial orientation system, 384 sets with thermal imaging orientation and 600 sets with laser orientation.
The range of these ammunition varies according to the launch height and the initial speed, officially ranging from 15 to 70 kilometers. With the expected start of ammunition transfers in January, it is expected that Ukrainian aircraft, especially Soviet-era models, such as the MiG-29 and Su-27 fighters, will be the main users of Mk.82 air bombs. The heavier Mk.84 pumps, weighing 908 kg, are only compatible with the Su-24M frontline bomber.
In addition, the AASM ammunition demonstrated compatibility with F-16 fighters during the tests in 2014. Ukraine is expected to receive its first F-16 fighters this year.

France says its troops were misrepresented in ‘Wakanda Forever’
One of the things I loved about Wakanda Forever is just how *explicitly* it depicted western powers (in this case France and the US) making demands of a (fictional!) African nation to 'share' (hand over...) its resources, and covertly exploiting its perceived instability after the death of their King in order to simply steal those resources
Yes, this is fictional and yes, it's yet another MCU corporate blockbuster. But it's also one of a very few mainstream Hollywood films that has bothered to so much as glance at the legacy of Western European imperialism in Africa, and ongoing post-colonial exploitation
Anyway, it seems to have hit a nerve in some parts of the French political establishment.
I'm fascinated by the way Lecornu singled out the recent presence of French armed forces in Mali (originally on the requst of the Malian interim govt in 2012 after the fall of Libya led to insurgency in the North of Mali) for comparison, as if that's the only time France has ever had a contested presence there. As if colonialism, Françafrique and the CFA Franc never happened
If the shoe fits...

"Many ministerial services were targeted" from Sunday "using familiar technical means but of unprecedented intensity," Attal's office said, without providing further details of the targets.
A security source told AFP that the attacks "are not currently attributable to Russia," an obvious suspect for many given Paris' support for Kyiv since the invasion of Ukraine.
The PM's staff added that a "crisis cell has been activated to deploy countermeasures", meaning "the impact of these attacks has been reduced for most services and access to state websites restored."
Specialist services including information security agency ANSSI were "implementing filtering measures until the attacks are over".
The latest cyberattack to hit France follows a warning from Attal's defence adviser last week that the Paris Olympics and European Parliament elections this summer could be "significant targets".
Meanwhile Defence Minister Sebastien Lecornu said last month that protection against "sabotage and cyberattack" by Russia should be stepped up, in an internal note seen by AFP that said his ministry was top of Moscow's target list.

The French government says it won't organise another referendum in New Caledonia during the president's current five-year term.
A year ago, then-overseas minister Sebastien Lecornu said he planned to have a vote on a new statute for New Caledonia by June 2023.
This was after last December's third independence referendum rejected the option of full sovereignty.[...] The pro-independence parties refuse to recognise the last referendum result and seek talks with Paris next year to secure a timetable to attain independence.

He said the contract for the acquisition of the howitzers was signed during the talks. Lecornu did not specify how many such systems Armenia will buy and at what cost. He said only that the contract marks a “new important milestone” in…

"It was very moving to have the chance to again thank the U.S., French, and other Allied veterans of World War II and to reaffirm the principles that they fought for. Their service and sacrifice laid the foundation for the rules-based international order that we built together after World War II," Austin remarked.

This package includes air defense interceptors, artillery ammunition, and other critical capabilities essential for Ukraine's defense. Reflecting on Democratic Values
Pointe du Hoc Ranger Monument Later, Biden, Austin, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Air Force Gen. CQ Brown, Jr. visited the Pointe du Hoc Ranger Monument in Normandy. This visit underscored the importance of remembering the sacrifices made for democracy and freedom. "When we talk about democracy — American democracy — we often talk big ideas like life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. What we don't talk about enough is how hard it is," Biden said. "American democracy asks the hardest of things: to believe that we're a part of something bigger than ourselves. So, democracy begins with each of us."
Commitment to American Ideals
Biden's remarks at the monument emphasized the need to stay true to the values that define America. He called for a continued commitment to these ideals, inspired by the bravery and sacrifices of those who fought in World War II. "As we gather here today, it's not just to honor those who showed such remarkable bravery that day, June 6, 1944. It's to listen to the echo of their voices, to hear them. Because they are summoning us. They're asking us what will we do. They're not asking us to scale these cliffs. They're asking us to stay true to what America stands for," Biden concluded. The Takeaway The unified stance of the U.S. and its allies in supporting Ukraine is crucial in the face of Russian aggression. Through continued cooperation, robust security assistance, and a commitment to democratic values, the international community stands firm in defending Ukraine's sovereignty and ensuring regional stability. For the first time, French Rafale fighters are deployed in Lithuania for Baltic air policing
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 12/02/2022 - 08:30 in Military
The Polish Air Force, which strengthened the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic States from Lithuania, took over the leadership of the Hungarian mission on December 1. The reinforcement has a first detachment of four Rafale fighters, the most powerful fighter in France, never deployed in Lithuania before.
Previously, the French Ministry of Defense had said that Paris would deploy four Rafale fighters in Lithuania from November 25 as part of NATO's military reinforcement to protect airspace over the Baltic countries.
"The importance of NATO's air defense today cannot be exaggerated. Countries agreed to intensify deterrence and defense, including in the air domain, in Madrid. We recognize that air defense capabilities should play a stronger role in ensuring security in the Baltic region,” Poland's Deputy Minister of National Defense, Vilius Semeska said at the inauguration ceremony.
French multifunction fighters will protect Lithuania's airspace by intercepting and identifying suspicious aircraft in the airspace of the Baltic States. Launched in 2004, when Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania joined NATO, Baltic Air Policing is intended to protect the three countries from air raids and provide support in the event of air emergencies, since these countries do not have their own air capacity.
The Hungarian exit rotation led the mission with four JAS39 Gripen fighters and approximately 150 military personnel - pilots, medical technical personnel, support, communications personnel and other specialists.
The four Rafale jets of the 30th Fighter Squadron landed in Lithuania to reinforce NATO's defensive and deterrent posture on the eastern flank of Europe. Its mission will be to participate in the surveillance and defense of the airspace of the Baltic states, the French Air Force tweeted.
Meanwhile, France will send Leclerc tanks and infantry combat vehicles to Romania as part of NATO's military reinforcement on its eastern flank, confirmed the French defense minister.
Sebastien Lecornu said in a statement that the reinforcements would include a reinforced armored infantry company and a Leclerc tank squad. He described the mission as "defense, deterrence and protection".
In addition to the Rafale fighters to Lithuania, France is also sending a light infantry company to Estonia. The implementation will be in phases and will continue until November.
The mission will cost France between $588-686 million this year alone, estimates the French Ministry of Defense. He described the accumulation of labor and military equipment on the border with Russia as "non-scalable".
The reinforcement of the NATO Air Policing Mission of Estonia's Amari Air Force Base is provided by the German Air Force Detachment with four Eurofighter fighters.

Roma.
#notizie #news #breakingnews #cronaca #politica #eventi #sport #moda Read the full article
